20 Best Yarns For Baby Blankets (2023 Updated)

I sell knitted baby hats and blankets so consistent quality is a requirement for my materials. I tried this yarn out for the first time after my original go-to brand discontinued 3 of my most popular colors.

Bernat’s baby blanket yarn colors were very similar to the colors I used previously so I decided to test it out. first of all, this yarn is SO much softer and nicer than what I had been using! I actually knit myself a hat with some of the extra yarn because I loved it so much lol.

I’ve been using this yarn for maybe a year now and I am obsessed with it! The colors are wonderful and the yarn is so soft. I’ve made lots of plushies with Bernat and I’ve been happy with all of the results! The yarn is always consistent with texture, color, and durability.

I’ve very occasionally run into tied parts, but it has never been a problem. Not to mention the amount of yarn you get. These balls are absolutely packed with yarn! They are worth it! Overall my favorite yarn! Soft, pretty, and great amount!.

I was so excited to try this yarn after hearing so much about it. However, I was very disappointed with the quality of the yarn and the colors. There are multiple knots throughout, and although this isn’t a dealbreaker, the balls that I purchased had no center pull that I could find (bought 10 in multiple colors for a project).

The “twists” colors were difficult to work with and I dealt with some splitting. The “twists” are fine to use in a project like a blanket, but projects that have loose ends such as tassels and pom-poms did not work because the twisted colors unraveled quite easily.

Although the yarn is advertised as “machine washable,” I dealt with some dark colors bleeding onto lighter colors, and it wasn’t quite as soft to the touch. This is a very fun yarn to work with and I enjoyed the projects I completed.

I like this yarn but there are some qualities that will keep me from purchasing again. If you decide to work with this yarn, be aware of what you might encounter.

This is one of my favorite yarns to use! I’ve been crocheting baby blankets like crazy ever since I found out I was pregnant so it’s a regular occurrence to run to Michael’s and buy a big ball of this yarn in different colors! This one, by far, has been my favorite! The one and only reason I don’t give this 5 stars is a manufacturer issue that I really hoped Bernat would fix long ago but the problem seems to be getting worse.

I’ve never had so many tie joins in a big ball or yarn! They make hard little knots in your work if you don’t cut them out! I don’t want hard knots in my baby girl’s blankets so I cut them out and join with slip stitches or work it into my work but it drives me nuts! Otherwise, this is my favorite yarn to work with!.

Soft and thick, it works up fast. BUT there are so many knots in each skein that I will never buy it again. Over seven knots in one skein! This leads to having to cut the yarn, retie it so that there’s an end to weave in, and start again.

Nope, never again.

This yarn is beautiful, soft and easy to work with! I usually get “White” but this time I purchased “Pitter Patter”. I Love making these Baby blankets! I have NO reason for using any other kind of yarn.

This yarn is very, very soft, thick and fluffy. It’s extremely high quality yarn, as are all Bernat yarns. My only advice is to look carefully at the size of the ball of yarn you are ordering. This is a six pack of the large balls which have 220 yards of yarn each, while the regular balls of this yarn only have 72 yards.

Make sure your pattern calls for this much yarn.

This was such a great deal on a bulk amount of yarn. Works great with loom knitting kits to make hats, scarves, anything really. No thin spots. Very consistent in thickness throughout each roll of yarn.

This yarn is absolutely beautiful and the feel of it is simply amazing , iv used it to make an Xmas wreath would definitely recommend

I made the mistake of buying two skeins of this stuff and I’m terribly disappointed!! The first one I pulled from the center and it split and unwound badly, making it difficult to crochet with and made the finished baby blanket look messy.

So, the second skein I tried using from the outside, thinking the twist might stay better that way. NOPE!! It untwisted and split just as bad. And, both of the blankest I made have a very dull finish.

I much prefer just about any other brand of baby yarn!!.

Bernat “Baby” used to be baby/fingering weight, however, it untwisted and would split as you knit with it. It was too slick to hold a knot and yet it tangled just by looking at it. They then “improved” it.

now they’ve added bulk making it closer to sport weight! My traditional baby dress is knit on needles size 1&2 making a newborn-6 mo size dress. You can’t use size 1 needles with this yarn! It comes out stiff! Baby/fingering weight yarn needs to be thin, pliable and reliable! I no longer purchase it.

I check yard sales and thrift stores for old skeins of Red Heart Baby Yarn.

I have made numerous prayer squares for my Sewing/Crafts group @ Via Christi St. Joseph Wichita, Ks. The yarn is excellent to work with. The prayer squares when finished will have a Catholic medal attached and given to the parents of miscarried babies.

I love this yarn and it makes up so beautiful.

I am so disappointed in this yarn. I always trusted Lion Brand yarns but will not anymore. I bought 3 skeins of Pound of Love yarn on sale at Joann’s to make a light weight blanket. I’ve been crocheting for years and and quite familiar with the center pull start but none of these had a center pull that worked.

I’ve even had times when a little clump of yarn came out before the center pull worked but none of these had a center pull that worked. I literally spent hours on each skein rolling balls from the OUTSIDE of the skeins.

I had to put the purchased pounds of yarn in a laundry basket so they would have room to bounce around while I wound the balls. I was not a happy camper. It took me 1 1/2 days to wind three one-pound skeins.

A pound of yarn really is quite a bit and this was made more difficult because I am a senior and have mobility problems. I thought of going back to Joanns with these messes but it wasn’t worth the bus ride and also because I agonized over the color choices since my first choices weren’t available.

Returning what I had bought just didn’t seem like a good option. I won’t ever buy Pound of Love yarn again, and I certainly don’t recommend it.

I’ve used Lion Brand super saver yarn many times in the past and for a change I decided I would get 3 skeins of Pound Of Love and WOW was that ever a mistake. I’m used to poor quality from super saver but thought pound of love was supposed to be some better but NO if anything it’s WORSE! Nothing but knots and irregular thickness throughout.

First skein I was able to center pull but as I used the yarn and the smaller the skein got the more tangled it became. It literally took my adult daughter 90 minutes to get the knots and tangles out.

I don’t have the patience to do it myself. At first I thought the uneven thickness of my stitches was due to my tension but very quickly I realized it wasn’t my tension but rather the yarn itself. In some places it’s more like a 3 weight and in others it’s more like a 5 weight.

Keep in mind it IS listed as a 4 weight with a 6 mm J hook recommend. That should have been my first clue that something is off with the size since every other 4 weight yarn I’ve personally ever used recommend a 5 mm or 5.

5 mm hook never before have I seen a 4 weight yarn recommend such a large hook. My 5 weight yarn that’s in my stash recommends a 6. 5mm hook so something seems off to me but I’ll be the first to admit I’m not qualified to size yarn.

2nd skein I decided I would ball it first and as I was doing this there were still knots along the way and there was no other option for me but to have to cut the yarn, untangle and start to wind another ball.

I ended up with 3 small balls rather than 1 big ball due to the necessity of having to cut the yarn. This 2nd skein was also noticably thinner and thicker in spots. I haven’t even started to do anything with the 3rd skein.

You might read this and wonder why didn’t she just return the yarn? Well, that would be because I had already put many hours into making the bedspread and didn’t want to lose all that work. When you’re commissioned to make an item and your customer wants a certain yarn it’s their item and if this is what they want far be it from me to criticize their choices.

I did however mention these issues with the customer and they didn’t want to pay for the extra time it would take for me to start over with a different yarn. Customer is always right. It’s their money and their choice.

However, I can say this for sure. If someone were to try to commission me for another item using pound of love I will decline if they won’t go with a different yarn. I doubt any customer will insist again once I’ve explained the issues.

In this case, the loss of time spent untangling this yarn will NOT be passed on to my customer but I will never use this yarn again. It’s just not worth the literal 2 hours of time spent just balling it up.

LION BRAND PLEASE STEP UP QUALITY CONTROL OR RELABEL THIS YARN.

First, the good—good color range, great price, and it’s great having a giant skein available for larger projects. That’s about where my appreciation stops though. I bought four colors in a kit to complete a sampler blanket project made up of 24 individual squares that are joined at the end.

This yarn is rated as a four, but I found the Wine color to be quite thin and the softest of the set, Elephant Grey and Taupe are about the same weight and Oxford Grey (the worst offender), was at least double the weight of wine and really scratchy.

Because of the extreme inconsistency in weight from color to color, my sampler block project has been incredibly challenging. I’ve had to adjust the patterns almost every time I use Oxford, and the coarseness of the yarn as I work with it makes my hands feel sore.

It’s been terrible. This is my first project working on something where gauge really mattered so all my blocks will join neatly—it’s definitely been a learning experience where materials are concerned.

In the future, I would NEVER buy a kit like this online. if you want to know what you’re getting, you have to actually go to the store and compare each skein so you can try and get something consistent.

Immediately before writing this, I ripped out about an hour’s worth of work with Oxford Grey and dumped it in a bag. I’m going to find something else to finish my project with, I can’t deal with it anymore.

I bought 5 skeins of the Lion Brand Baby Soft yarn in white for a baby blanket. I prefer to work from the inside of the skein and as I reached into at least 3 of the skeins (possibly all of them) the inside has been a bundle of tangled mess, including yarn joined together in several places with knots.

The current skein I’m using took over 3 hours to untangle, including having to cut my project away from it and then rejoining the yarn once untangled. If I hadn’t already gotten so much of the blanket done already I would have taken it all back to the store.

I have never had this problem with any other yarn so I may never buy this brand again. I love the feel of it when crocheting with it and the blanket is softer than I had expected so I am pleased with that.

I would really like the yarn if it wasn’t for the horrible tangled and knotted mess.

I buy yarn for a group that knits baby hats for charity. The group likes knitting with it. It gives dependable results. The yardage is nice.

It was a really nice yarn. I used it for a keychain on my water bottle. I also love this brand. would recommend! coming from a 12 yr old

I’m am not an experienced crocheter, but am learning quickly. This is the VERY first yarn I crochet baby blankets with. It’s for my future grandkids. I’m absolutely in LOVE with the results! It’s SUPER soft and so easy to work with! I have 2 boys currently in college and I’m working on baby blanket #3.

Oh my goodness this yarn is so soft! I am loving working with it, there is no splitting and it feels like it glides right off my hook. The color I chose might seem like an odd color for a baby garment but it is turning out perfect – a cute soft gray pair of little boy overalls that I am going to make removable appliqués for that will add that needed little pop of color.

I am so happy with my choice of yarn, who knew those unassuming skeins of soft gray yarn would thrill this “I thought I had seen it all” crochet stormtrooper?.

I had searched this yarn for a different project and hadn’t been able to find it. I wound up purchasing a different yarn for that one–but when I spotted the package of Patrons Beehive in the bin I grabbed it because I wanted to see why this yarn was so highly recommended by the pattern creator.

It’s soft, easy to work with, and the center pull works without too much “yarn barf”, I could easily detangle any knots that came up as I worked the pattern. I would definitely use this yarn for future projects!.

It was not fluffy as expected also it was as if the colour was faded

This yarn is so nice to work with and the baby blanket turned out beautiful. I can see why it was hardly ever in stock in store and hard to find/get. I had the same experience as a review I recently read but hadn’t seen before purchasing to be aware of.

The color variation between skeins is not consistently the same so if you are trying to follow a specific pattern of ombré change it may not line up as is w/o some planning ahead on your part. I did not experience the knot issues I see others mentioning, just what would be expected with about 1 per skein.

The main issue I had with my yarn was a major coloring problem in my last skein…. I was using the pink and 3/4 of the way through the skein had greyish/bluish/purple marking on some of the yarn. It was scattered so even cutting off where I thought it ended to keep using the remaining yarn still found more further along.

I ended up cutting a whole section out so that I could at least get the edging done but disappointed nonetheless in this happening with what I thought was a nicer and better quality brand. So beware, you might need to be doing your own quality control between choosing your skeins based the ombré fade and also checking over the yarn for discoloration/dye problem.

Unfortunately I had ordered online so wasn’t able to see or notice the skeins ombré pattern being different between skeins to choose and purchase them differently.

It’s soft and so easy to work with, but I have issues with the coloring. Maybe it’s because I’ve never see it at the store that I didn’t realize that besides being dappled, it’s also ombre. Not just a lighter grey ombre, but stark white.

I made a baby blanket and my daughter said it just didn’t look right because it started out light grey then switched to a darker grey, but then it switched to a stark white (no knot switch, just the yarn).

I tore the blanket apart and will restart since I really like the feel of the yarn, but I’m cutting out the white as I come to it and will use it as the border if not enough grey is remaining. I ordered an extra skein so there should be enough yarn.

Guess that’s what I get for ordering online and not seeing just what it is like in the store. It is a pretty and baby soft yarn to use, and I would buy it again (though only using dappled on a larger, wider blanket where color changes would be a bit more drawn out).

I was just a bit surprised, and wish they would have shown a top picture of the yarn so people know what they are buying. Next time I’m clicking on the lower star reviews because I now notice I’m not the only one wishing I’d known in advance about it being ombre.

I love this yarn and get many compliments from my finished product. I also, as others, have had problems with the knots in the middle of each and also the drastic color change instead of the ombre. I only had one incident of the color change not matching up, hope this doesn’t continue as I have another project i am using this yarn with.

Otherwise love it and will buy it again It is very expensive when you need like 8 skeins, so i always try to wait for sales. 11. 99 at the moment, I guess i will be waiting.

Addicted to the soft feel of the finished items. The color combinations are really creative. Some are truly varigated while others are tonal, but I have mixed them effectively. Be careful, in afghans and larger items, you can get a lot of stretch from the items own weight, but if you stay with items like baby blankets, scarves, hats, gloves, you shouldn’t encounter the problem Machine wash is OK, but cold water and gentle cycle.

I use one of the plant based laundry detergents instead of spending a fortune for woolite. Dry on low heat-emphasize low because it can make the surface feel sticky, tacky if dried too hot.

I crocheted a wrap with this yarn and it turned out well, or so I thought. Just in manipulating the project, loops of yarn began to appear in random places. I thought washing it might set the yarn, but even on the shortest delicate cold cycle per instructions with no other items, it came out with large loose loops all over both sides of it! I can’t imagine what caused this, and it had begun even before the item was washed.

The project only had mostly double crochet with some single crochet, using both loops. No unusual stitches at all. I usually do easy projects, but I’ve completed several intermediate ones with great results, so I don’t think I did anything wrong.

Also, while the actual crocheting with this yarn was easy, the skein had many, many tangles that were almost impossible to untangle. I finally had to cut out one section of the yarn. The yarn is very soft with a velvety feel, but at the same time is slippery.

My project is basically ruined. I don’t know if this was a defective skein or what, but I can’t recommend this yarn at all. Still trying to figure out this strange problem–there were no breaks in the yarn, just pulled loops all over the place.

Love this kind of yarn, it flows easily and this Stripes type in particular makes the change of colors automatic. This specific Seaglass one, hard to find, was offered with the exact colors I needed for a project for my grand-daughter’s expected twins, and it was shipped super fast.

Color transitions are just two sections held together by strings wrapped around. It doesnt even match the yarn color. Very disappointed in this yarn. Bernat has been my favorite yarn until this one. Save your money and pass on this one.

Beautiful yarn to work with. Works up so quick and feels lovely. I bought 4 in total, 3 for main body of a blanket and 1 for the boarder, side of a lap blanket (approx) very soft and snug. Lovely sparkle throughout which fortunately doesn’t feel scratchy neither.

Would defiently consider purchasing again in the future.

I have been using the baby blanket yarn for several months, and every single skein has has tangles along the way or I cannot find starting strand. Thus, I have to waste time unraveling yarn and putting it in a ball before I start a project and multiple time I have to untangle and tie yarn together if I have to cut to untangle.

I have written to complain. But I’ve gotten no response.

This yarn is great to work with! The sparkles are not scratchy at all and it’s super soft. I’ve used three skeins of this yarn, and I haven’t encountered any knots or tangles. It’s perfect for making stuffed animals!.

I have used this product for years and have always been pleased with it and the results of my finished piece. I did find a flaw in one of the skeins that I ordered and have never found any problems with any in the past.

There was about a two inch place in the middle of the skein that was a color that was not anywhere else in the skein (yellow). I was able to cut it out, however it was annoying and caused a little extra work.

So this was my first time using this fluffy yarn but after getting used to getting my stitches on my hook I was going like any other project. The yarn is super soft and very fun colors I got the funny prints color and I love it!!! I made a baby blanket out of 5 skeins of the yarn with 120 stitches.

I was so glad to find the variegated yarn again in this brand and the baby coordinates. Now I learn that they are not making it any more, and that makes me sad, but grateful that I was able to get these before they were completely gone! Sure wish my fixed income would allow me to purchase everything they had in these yarns, as I know I am going to have more great grand babies to make double side blankets for, and it works so great when it is plain on the back and variegated on the front.

The 6 skeins of yarn I bought was a mess. None of the skeins would unravel as they should from the middle. It was so snarled I couldn’t even rewind the skein by hand to make a ball of yarn. I have bought this brand for years and it was so sparse I had to add chains to my pattern to have it come out the size i was exacting.

When I have tried to return it everyone pointed fingers and said it was someone else’s responsibility. It’s getting harder to find a variety of yarn in the stores and was hoping this was my recourse.

Apparently not.

I as very unhappy with this particular skein of Baby Baby yarn. There were patches of very thick frayed yarn and then other patches that were just one strand. It was impossible to use on the baby blanket I had purchased it for.

Matter of fact, it was a total waste of money as it can not be used for any knitting or crochet patterns. Bernat’s quality control department was asleep when this passed their workstation.

This wool is special. it has a lovely feel. As a dk knit it is rather light which makes it makes for a softer finish. The colours are gentle but strong. it would make a super shawl .

Super soft wool. Stable ply, no unraveling half way through knitting, unlike other yarns. Lovely deep colour, dye is fixed and garments wash well.

The baby cashmerino is heaven. I know it will be my go to yarn. BUT the customer service I received was beyond thoughtful. I needed a specific dye lot. (We all know about that). Rather than a stern lecture, I received a sincere ” I hate when I do that.

No promises but let’s see what we can do”. I was so pleased. It was a knitter to knitter moment. The georgous cashmerino was delivered within a few days in the dye lot I needed. WEBS you’re stuck with me.

I have been a fan of this yarn for over a decade – it looks lovely and is deliciously soft when knitted. Working with this yarn is a pleasure – it feels soft and squishy, doesn’t split, makes it easy to keep an even tension, and the ball keeps its shape, reducing the risk of tangling the yarn.

There is an extensive range of colours – not just baby pastels but also lots of strong, vibrant shades. If the colour you want isn’t available in the baby cashmerino yarn, MillaMia has a comparable yarn in beautiful colours.

I often use both types of yarn in the same project with no problems. Baby cashmerino has enough body to show detailed texture (e. g. Guernsey patterns) but is still much softer than cotton yarns (e. g.

Rowan cotton glac). Even simple knits look special in this yarn – imperfections are usually obvious on a plain stocking stitch, but this is a very forgiving yarn, even for those who are not confident knitters.

Over the years, I have made lots of baby clothes with this yarn and all of the garments are still in good condition despite numerous visits to the washing machine (30*C, woollens cycle). Although this yarn is more expensive than some, I would still recommend it, especially for making special garments/gifts.

This yarn makes a beautiful baby blanket. It’s very soft. I have two negatives, though. It sheds white fuzz on everything it touches. I was crocheting in the car and had the ball of yarn on the floor.

I noticed my pants were covered with white fuzz from where I had the blanket sitting. Also, my black carpet was covered with white fuzz which was very difficult to vacuum up. My other complaint is the strands separate very easily, making it difficult bring the hook back through a loop quickly without catching one of the strands.

These things are probably what makes the finished product so soft but they can be problems as well.

I bought this yarn to crochet a baby blanket, and I’m really not a big fan of it. For a yarn called Softee, I feel like it’s really not all that soft. And the weirdest thing is, the texture and feel varies so much between 2 different shades of the same exact yarn.

I bought lilac and white, and the lilac has much more of a soft, smooth feel, while the white is like a rougher less soft yarn and also feels a bit thicker and looks more dull. If I’d seen both of them without the labels on, I’d swear they were 2 totally different types of yarn.

Kind of frustrating since I’m using them both for the same project, and expected them to feel the same.
