13 Best Wrx Short Throw Shifter (2023 Updated)

My trans would pop out of first pretty much every time. I changed to redline mtl, didn’t help, trimmed inner shift boot, didn’t help. I got this after reading reviews from multiple sources on this shifter, everyone said this fixed the problem.

Sure enough, it does. Shifts are much shorter throw and stiffer than stock. It goes into gear very definitively, the detents are strong, unlike stock. They say it doesn’t fit tj/lj with a body lift. Mine has a body lift and it did require extensive modifications, I cut the shaft, grinded the stub to the right angle and then welded the upper part of the shaft back on to straighten the angle out, make it more upright.

Now it fits perfectly, I can use the front cup holder now, couldn’t be happier with this shifter. It’s expensive but worth it!.

Although this product is great and once I got rid of the slipping, it really felt different. The product itself gets rid of the loose feeling in your shifter and even when broken in is a compeltely different feeling than stock.

Each shift feels stiff and intentional and actually requires some force to put into gear. Feels sporty The reason this did not get rid of the isssue of my jeep slipping out of first gear is because the isssue is really with the synchronizers in the transmission.

In my case this slipping cause me to burn my clutch since 1st gear was unusable and I always had to start in 2nd. The solution to this popping out of gear problem is to either get your syncrnizers “syncros” rebuilt on your transmission or in my case for the same price, a whole new transmission.

I ended up getting my transmission replaced and the short shifter installed and let me say that after it felt like a completely different car, in a good way. I do reccommend this shifter ot anyone with a loose shifter and is looking for something sportier and with more control.

But, if you do have the issue of your jeep popping out of first gear, I sadly found out that this shifter is not the final solution, despite other reviews saying it is.

I bought this because my jeep would always pop out of 1st gear when on rough terrain, when I would initially take off from stop on inclines, or if I had to gas it to get through traffic. It would just pop right out of 1st and go to neutral.

The factory shifter was just completely wore out and very wobbly. I had actually taken it to a transmission shop to see if they could diagnose why the transmission was popping out of gear. They told me it was likely the synchronizers, the teeth on first gear, etc.

They told me I would need to essentially get my transmission rebuilt. I really didn’t think that was the case. At least I didn’t want to accept it. I did extensive research and found that it is actually a slightly common problem with jeeps.

Everyone seemed to have the same conversation with the transmission guy. I read several reviews and watched several videos on the B&M shifter swap, and everyone seem to have decent success. So I figured I’d give it a shot.

Needless to say, the reviews were right. This shifter is literally amazing. It’s solve the problem of popping out of gear. The throws are super short, comfortable, and tight. Even if your jeep doesn’t pop out of gear, I still I highly recommend this shifter.

It is seriously so nice. It will change the way the jeep drives in such a good way.

This is a very nice shifter. It’s a little noisy. But besides that it works good. Be careful because on of my shifter handle bolts was backing out so it made a weird rattle. But I tightened it down and haven’t had a problem since.

Got it very fast and immidiately installed the Shifter into my 2013 SS. The distance between the shifts almost feel like half an inch. Very short, very nice and this distinctive click sound when i shift.

Bought this for my 2010 camaro v6. I installed it myself in about a hour and a half. My only issue was the centering spring getting the old shifter out. (end up just removing two screws and removing the spring all together )I didn’t use the sound deadening material supplied with the kit.

Since install, only noise is the click when going from one gear to another. (not loud )I get way better performance when I get on it. actually a little better gas mileage when I drive in normal. My wife was like why fix something that not broken? Then she drove it.

now she chirps tires constantly in 2nd and 3rd and loves it. (I told her so).

Normally you get what you pay for had good experiences in the past buying the “higher quality” recommend items from AM. The spacer plate that you have to use for the T-45 transmission only fits one way which is fine but when you rotate it every other way it is so dang close to fitting that you can turn the bolts thru but don’t fall thru easily so at first I thought it was poor fittment and was about to drill the holes out on the spacer bigger cause it was making it difficult to bolt up when I decided to try rotating it one more time.

In the mean time I had dropped the washers about 100 times from the fittment issues. Don’t buy the seperate gasket kit that AM recommends you buy. For one with the T-45 and needing to use the spacer I had 2 surfaces to seal not 1 so 1 gasket does nothing and secondly the gasket is slightly to big and had to fight it to keep a ripple out of it.

The zip tie you get to hold the dust boot on is to small you would think for $300 you would at least get a large enough zip tie. I will agree it feels a little smotther but it also feels like it has more slop while in gear now.

The only redeeming factors are ergonomically it fits me way better and looks great. That being said $300 is a lot to pay for a chrome plated handle since that is the only part that was worth while. Would not recommend.

Fantastic shifter. Only a few problems. the cheap zip tie they supplied for securing the rubber boot to the shifter was too short so I just left it off. Also, the instructions are pretty lacking. they stated to re-install the factory dust cover (boot) after the shifter was bolted to the tranny.

No way it was fitting over this thing! This shifter is way too tall. Had to enlarge the circular hole in the factory rubber dust cover and pull it down over the shifter body, then install the hurst boot over the shifter.

Also, there is a little brown plastic cup thing that was supplied in the parts bag. Have no idea what it is for as the directions didn’t state anywhere its use. The plastic cup that fits onto the shift ball lever is removed from the original shifter, so I dunno.

Overall a quality built shifter and a huge improvement over stock but Hurst needs to hire a technical writer to go through an an actual install and re-write the instructions accurately.

Very nice fit and feel. Its feels mechanical and accurate. It feels very immersed in the power and sound( which is louder) of the car. It feels like a old musclecar. The best upgrade I’ve done. Its much shorter throw and makes driving much more enjoyable.

I also went with the original style pistol grip shifter handle. Very pleased with the finished product. Definitely worth the money!.

I was concerned about the size of the shifter handle. However it is a great fit for my hand. I wish it was already set up for a three speed but it comes ready to install for a powerglide. To convert it to a 3 speed you must replace a spacer with a o ring spacer.

Not difficult but for the cost it should come ready to go.

Took a little while to ship, but summit abd hurst sent plenty of stickers and a hat! I would buy it again. It put mine on a poweglide with a probrake and it work great! And looks good too

I love this shifter in black. I like this one better than my silver one.

First of all they need different ways to rate shifters lol. I will start with why I gave it 4 stars. I was expecting this shifter to shorten the throw of the shift significantly due to driving another Hurst before.

It didn’t it only feels like a 10 difference in throw compaired to an MGW which reduces your throw from 25-35 depending on the handle. The only other issue I had with it is that the handle must’ve been loose when it was installed, now before you judge I ordered a clutch and the shifter and the shop said they’d install the shifter for free.

So the shifter had a lot of play and I took everything a part and just tightened back down, not too big of a deal. Now for the good stuff. This shifter looks fantastic. It also has a nice smooth engagement and a positive feel for when you are in gear.

This shifter looks good, feels solid, and is smooth. Good product I just wish the throw was shorter. Wasn’t much of a bang for your buck when the shifter comes in just under 300 bucks so that’s a definite 2.

BTW American Muscle you should rate it by Throw reduction, Looks, Fitment, and Feel.

Was backordered when , I ordered it, AM called and offered a different option, glad I stuck with the Hurst. It still arrived pretty quickly, is awesome looking in my 86 gt. It took very little time , less than an hr to install on my t5z.

havent had it for a drive yet but it puts handle in nice position for me , seems to shift nicely through the gears , cant wait til i get it fora drive.

If you hate the stock, chunky feel of the TC shifter, this kit fixes that, and when combined with a weighted knob, the throw is crisp and smooth. Shorter than stock, but not so short it feels weird to daily.

Honestly it’s pretty perfect. The solid bushings honestly don’t vibrate at all, so there really is no downside to installing this short throw. (4 stars because there are absolutely no instructions to install, but it’s not that bad to figure out.

The purple cylinders go in place of the bushings on the bottom of the plastic cradle. Just pull the old ones out with pliers).

Short throws are amazing. I put this Megan racing shifter in an 09 Camry (even though a Camry should never be modded) and it made a huge difference in driving. The old shifter felt like you were stirring yogurt when changing gears.

This feels like an F1 car. Shifts are super fast, satisfying, and easy to find. With the old stick, misshifts happened pretty often. That hasn’t been a problem yet since installing this. I would short shift my automatic if I could.

Just a great short shifter. No issues at all with the installation in my 08 scion tc, not worried at all about the build quality of the shifter itself either. Good stuff! I need to readjust the boot but here it is installed.

I bought this for my 02 wrx wagon. It is usable if you add thick washers to the sides of the mount. The bottom cylinder where it is bolted in is shorter than the stock shifter, giving it a substantial amount of back and forth play in every gear.

I bought this for my 06 wrx. Functions great, very quick and easy install. Reuse bushings from your old shifter. Zero issues. Best value for what you pay. Shift knob is very small, dont expect to use it.

But thats not what you buy it for.

Took a chance that it would fit my car, it does so perfectly. Hard to tell if it shortened the throw much since it replaced a hacked off factory unit. Fits the lower seat properly, zero binding issues when running through the gears.

Hate stock shifters. Always have changed to short throws. This short throw is great and will buy it again if ever needed for another transmission. Bang threw the gears at red line fast and easy in every gear! Definitely recommend.

Really awesome shifter. Put it in my 99gt man what a difference. If your looking at buying this. Look no further. Make the purchase. 1-2 is sick! 2-3 is unreal! Never miss 3rd! Ever. I highly reccomend this shifter.

this shifter tightened up the shifter pattern tremendously. its like putting a new tranny in. I would recommend this product and summit racing equipment to anyone.

Completely fixed my side to side slop! I haven’t replaced the front or rear shift bearings and got 175k on the car. There was a bit of side to side slop when the shifter was adjusted to the highest position, but it was eliminated when I put it down to a little bit below stock and it’s super comfortable and no play.

The shift gates feel much more secure and tight. Here’s the part numbers for bushings and collar that sit in the shifter. Bushings: 35035AC000. Collar: 35045AC010. Got them off Subarupartsandaccessories.

com for around $15 after shipping. The guy that’s owned the car before me put in an eBay short throw that had different bushings. Wayyy worse. The adjustability is great. Also saw people complain about the hardware being trash and then stripping out the receiving nut on the adjustability bolts.

I did not experience this problem. I tightened them down a quarter turn past hand tight until the shift lever held steady from me putting solid pressure down on it from the top. All in all great made product.

Wow! This short shifter is amazing! My wrx has some pretty high miles, so the bushings felt worn out and the shifter felt ancient. However, COBB was the perfect place to turn to! The shipping was fast, and their product amazing! The feel of the shifter and new bushings together, wow.

I would recommend buying them as a pair for older vehicles like my 2005 wrx. A couple thousand miles later and second to third and everything else is just soo satisfying. I don’t have mine crazy short, just much more practical than it used to be.

I purchased this short throw and the Cobb knob for my 2010 WRX and my shifter feels great. It feels like a brand new driving experience. I was a little careful initially tightening down the screws as to not strip them, but I initially didn’t even tighten it enough to hold it.

After putting a little more torque on them they are holding great and I never even got close to stripping the screws. So just follow the instructions of a 50 in-lb of torque. That’s inches folks so no need for your biceps.

I went for the optional cutting of the frame around the shifter for a shorter throw. Let me tell you, the plate is like 1/8″ steel! I had to use a serious metal cutting disk to get this done. Not for the faint of heart! But now I have amazing short shifts.

I have used and installed them on various Honda’s and very committed with Hybrid Racing Shifters! My personal EG, demo car project FK8 Type R and S2000 also has them equipped with these shifters. Not only they look amazing, they feel great when shifting and you can tell these are well designed.

Will be getting a set for my personal EK with B18 HKS Turbo Kit and demo car project EK with APEXI Turbo Kit very soon!.

Shifter is super high quality and is truely a piece of art. all hardware was included and super easy to install on my linkage. Shifting is super smooth and is actually a real true short shifter. It’s night and day difference.

And I mean NIGHT AND DAY. well worth the money by far.

Just installed this last night, as the completion of phase 2 (Stage 2+) of my Stage 3 new-to-DIY adventures. So far so good, though I it is certainly a new feel (very crisp, due to the front and rear bushing upgrade).

A few tips I figured out the hard way: 1) I found that holding the lockout cable in place using the holes/allen key was not reliable, particularly with a bit of movement on the cable from within the car.

I eventually held it in position by inserting a 1/2 inch dowel after moving the cam as far as possible. This gave me lots of slack to work with. 2) Feeding the lockout cable up the shifter is easier before the shifter is bolted into place.

3) I had a bugger of a time threading the pin into the holes and through the eye in the cable end. After losing the pin once (they right diameter is available at NAPA, though slightly shorter than stock) I figured out a trick of feeding a wire through the holes and then into the pin.

This then guides the pin nicely. Went in very, very easily this way.

Just installed today on my 2016 STI and am really enjoying it. You do however need to tie up the reverse lockout cable to keep it from rubbing on the drive shaft. Very high quality, better feel than stock and wish it was visible because it looks cool awesome! Bushings are next.

Received Cobb short shifter with the help of Dane and it was perfect. Came with all necessary items to install fit perfectly with almost no modification needed and feels amazing. Can adjust the short shifter quite a bit to your own comfortable setting highly recommend.

After replacing the shifter bushing and adding the Cobb shift stop, I was pretty happy with my ’15 WRX. I decided to upgrade the shift plate and went with the 35% short throw position. The shifting is phenomenal.

I can’t believe that my car would ever shift like this. The shifts are super tight and the throw is perfect. I am using my stock shifter and wouldn’t change anything. If you have a short throw shifter, you might want to choose the 15% position though.

Once again Cobb comes through with an amazing product. Just installed the Cobb resonated j pipe and Stage 2 map, and I have a new car!.

I’ve had this shift plate installed for the past 3 days now. Prior to the plate I just had a Raceseng slammer (635g), Perrin shift stop, Perrin shift bushing, Whiteline positive shift kit, and Group N transmission mount.

Adding the shift plate to the mix on the 35% reduction setting is a perfect combination of shortening the throw and it actually seems to have taken some additional slop out. I opted for this over the Boomba plate as I generally liked the OEM shift plate was, but wanted a shorter throw without reducing the height.

With the Boomba shift plate the heat or protector shield or whatever it is can’t be reinstalled so I didn’t want to have an additional part laying around. Overall it feels great and like some others have commented, this is the way it should have come from the factory.

Another win for Cobb.

One of my biggest issues with the WRX is the shifter. I installed this along with the shifter bushing myself so it’s an easy install. Just make sure you have the tools (you need a 3/16 punch) and I recommend watching on YouTube because it still took me a lot longer than it should have because it was my first go at it.

It truly makes the car feel so much better driving. It’s no longer a slop fest but a precise shift. It feels like the car should have come like this. If you do anything to your car do this mod with the shift stop and shifter bushing.

10/10 would recommend. Plus Cobb customer service is great.
