20 Best Wool Blanket For Camping (2023 Updated)

With winter coming early in some places, we picked up the Arcturus Military Wool Blanket which measures 5’x7’ (64”x88”). Being designed for Military use made the Arcturus blanket more desirable for durability and longevity.

The blanket feels soft to the touch and fairly light weight for a wool blanket. It also did not feel itchy like some other wool blankets I have used in the past. The weave is tightly stitched together and looks seamless.

The Arcturus label states their wool blankets are triple-washed during production, making them softer, more hygienic, and less susceptible to shedding. The blanket is large enough for several members of the family to snuggle on the couch and watch a movie together.

Also, according to Arcturus, the blanket is woven with 20% hypoallergenic long synthetic fibers for durability and wash ability. For added safety, the blanket is also fire resistant. We love the blanket and will also be sending it with our daughter to camp hopefully this summer.

This blanket is very similar to the much-beloved “military” blanket of days gone by. It is wonderfully well finished, surprisingly soft to the touch and looks great with the contrasting edge binding.

It is a dense wool blanket with a good amount of weight, and that density is what keeps you warm. Some reviews mention an odor when first unpacked, and I did detect a trace of an “off” odor, but I simply hung it for a day on a line on an enclosed porch, and all was good.

Am I pleased with this purchase? Yes, very. Would I buy it again? Yes, I surely would, but with a blanket of this quality, I truly think that this might just out-live me.

My wife and I are in our mid 60’s, and live in Northern NY at the base of the Adirondacks. It’s a beautiful area with 4 seasons. When old man winter comes to town it gets cold. We are use to the change and stay prepared.

We love to have that feeling of a weighted blanket on us during the cold winter nights. We have a down comforter and it really keeps us warm but it’s also light weight. We have wanted a wool Pendleton blanket for quite a while but they are pricey.

For our together Christmas gift I decide to finally just do it, and purchased this Camp Blanket. It is on our bed under the down comforter. We just went through some 20 below zero weather and are extremely satisfied.

We so look forward to getting under the covers at night. Within 60 seconds you can feel the warmth and the weight is just perfect. If I get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night the heat is still there when I crawl back in bed.

Reminds me of the days when I was a young boy and we had the Army surplus blankets, but these are much nicer and beautiful. We plan to get them for each of our guest rooms for company to enjoy. Life is short and we spend half of it in bed! Get the Blanket.

I always wanted a Pendleton wool blanket but had other needs raising a family. I am now able to get things for myself and purchased one. It did not disappoint in any way. I slept in total comfort the first night without experiencing any temperature variations that would keep me from sleeping all night.

I like a cool room. I don’t know how the blanket adjusts, but I never get cold or too warm.

I’ve been using this blanket for the past 3 years. This is an ok blanket IMO, I have to use a second blanket underneath it- it does not retain heat. I have taken on various camping trips But always ending up using it to sleep on top of.

Been trying to use it, but ended up using it as a decoration wool blanket in our spare room. (I purchased the Umber Mineral color which is absolutely beautiful. ).

I’ve researched for a warm and good quality wool blanket a long time and finally decided on purchasing the Filson Mackinaw. I’m very happy with my decision as the blanket has kept me warm this winter.

It’s good quality wool, thick and heavy as a good, well made wool blanket should be. This is the most warm wool blanket if warmth is your criteria in choosing a wool blanket.

100% wool, not a blend. Made in USA. This is my first wool blanket in years, I grew up with scratchy wool army blankets and never liked them. This blanket is very slightly scratchy, doesnt bother me, but definitely not soft cotton.

I was surprised at how heavy it is, very different from the cotton blankets Im used to. I cant imagine this blanket ever wearing out, so it will be used for years and years. Very pleased with the purchase!.

blanket is very heavy and very dense. It is definitely warm, but not a snuggle blanket. If feels just like the cloth on a filson wool coat, but perhaps even thicker. I think the low nap could be helpful if you need to brush off some duff or debris.

I will keep it as a practical, if not stylish, addition to my home, but I hope it softens up with use.

Absolute dream! After being envious of my lil one’s blankets and sleep sack, i was excited for this (even though it’s not the sane feel/material) Initially ordered the queen for use in addition to our comforter but hubs wasn’t interested so swapped it for a twin for use on my side only.

it’s been glorious! My body temp goes up while sleeping so the down comforter can get too warm but now i just kick off the comforter and this blanket does the job and regulates my temp. Hubs is now envious and tries to ‘steal’ it.

Love this blanket! I have two toddler blankets for my 1. 5yr old and I often use the one she’s not using to throw over my lap. I even emailed Woolino asking if they’d come out with an adult size! I was thrilled to see they came out with these wool blankets for adults.

I bought the queen size and it’s wonderful, very warm and soft. I’d still love to see them come out with a queen size blanket in the same material as the sleep sack/toddler blankets, but for now, I’m very happy with this!.

My daughter has a woolino sleep sack and a toddler blanket, and quite frankly I was jealous! So I bought myself this bed blanket. It is not lined like the toddler items, but it is still much softer than normal wool.

I was also worried about how light it is, but I slept SO well last night! I couldn’t be happier with the purchase and would not hesitate to buy one again.

I got these for bedding for my bird dogs moble car carriers. They had to be aired out before use to got rid the gasoline smell. They worked well better than the movin. I use 2 blankets in each carrier and I think my dogs liked them.

They about what I thought I was getting thinner and lighter than a USGI blanket. I will get more for fall camping for extra warm.

The blankets came packaged OK. They correct number was in the package. Upon opening, they a foul, oily, musty smell. I washed them twice and they still smell bad, though not so much. I am keeping them for moving/utility blankets.

Not fit for use by people.

The catalog states wool blend military style blankets. What I received is nothing more than the emergency blankets that are overly scratchy and smell of chemicals. Not to mention the picture that is on the product shows a nice overall grey color.

These have a mix of grey blue and red. Not impressed.

If you’ve ever used a good wool blanket, then you will know exactly what you’re getting. Some expect anything wool from Minus33 to be very soft and cozy, but this blanket is build to be used and to last.

Therefore you must understand that while you are still getting a relatively soft blanket, it’s not going to be the same kind of soft as the merino v neck you purchased. This is not scratchy, like the old wool blankets your grandparents had by any means, just want to set the expectation that it’s not shirt material either.

Great blanket to use on the sofa, take camping, or keep in the car for emergencies or spontaneous picnics!.

This blanket is great! It is super warm. Even though it is a wool blend it is still very soft. So far it has only seen my couch but soon it will be out in the wilderness with me. I am confident it will be a valued addition to my camping kit.

At 6’2″ I only wish it was slightly larger.

I purchased one to use with my hammock setup on colder nights and it’s perfect. Even on really windy nights, it kept me nice and warm. I’ve never really had much experience with wool, but I can say it definitely has advantages when it comes to heat retention – being naturally fire retardant and water repelling is just another plus.

This blanket would be purely for outdoors/survival purposes only. It is a blend of wool and OTHER materials. If youre looking for a nice wool blanket for home use this probably isnt it. But that being said , I do have it strapped to my buggout pack until I can find an alternative.

Love it! It’s very large. I washed on gentle handwash cycle and air dried flat and it turned out beautiful.

Great quality and great price. However it had a slight petroleum smell so I washed it in Woolite. Very happy.

The positive: This blanket is thin but it will keep you warm on very cold winter nights. It does the job, it will keep you warm when the weather is zero degree outside. I live in a building that doesn’t provide heat so this blanket is perfect for me.

This blanket is the one for you. Some of us are not fortunate enough to live in a building that provide heat. I am in New York City. The blanket is made of wool so it will keep you very very warm. You will get a good night sleep with this blanket.

I love this blanket. I would highly recommend it to all of my friends. When it’s 20 degree outside, my building turns on the heat for 10 minutes, then they turn off the heat. I think the only reason they turn on the heat is so they can say that they turned it on & to keep the pipes from freezing.

The cons: The blanket has a motor smell, but it can be fixed. If you wash it the motor smell will come out. It’s very pricey. With the cost of $7. 00 dollars shipping it comes out to $31. 00. I wish it was cheaper.

It’s better than I expected. Smooth and not ‘itchy’ for a wool blanket. It’s a little thin, but not too thin. I bought it to keep in my car for emergencies. I tried it out on my bed and decided to use it there.

I ordered another one to keep in my car. The label states: Rothco; 62 X 80; 70% Wool/ 30% Synthetic; Fire Retardant; Made in India; Dry Clean Only.

I have two Yakima Camp blankets, a queen size in mineral umber and a twin size in grey. They are both gorgeous and I use them on my bed at home and in my teardrop camper when I’m traveling. They are generously sized so that they hang all the way down when used as a bedspread.

The twin size is large enough to cover the top of a queen sized mattress with about 3” hanging over each side. They are thick, cozy and totally worth the price. Before I invested in these I bought a less expensive wool camping blanket and the difference in thickness, softness and beauty is obvious.

The cheaper one also started to pill after just a couple of light uses and that isn’t a problem with my Pendleton blankets. They’re gorgeous heirloom quality and I very highly recommend them for home, camping and car travel.

My dog also loves them!.

That old adage of ‘they don’t make them like they used to’ rings true for wool blankets it seemed. I looked everywhere for good ol’ fashioned wool blankets, because they are flat out the best for rugged outdoor situations.

All I could find were inexpensive knock-offs that were either very thin or were made with a lower percentage of wool (<80%). It became obvious that I would have to spend a bit more for the quality I was looking for.

As it turned out, I only spent a few dollars more. I should mention that I happen to own two authentic (old fashioned) wool blankets. One is a genuine military issue blanket (acquired by my father in Vietnam), and one is a gray ’emergency’ blanket (acquired by my grand-dad during a natural disaster).

I can tell you that the quality of my new blankets (I bought two) are comparable to the standards of my ‘authentic’ wool blankets, and they are actually much softer. I recommend machine washing and line-drying them at least once before use.

This may sound silly, but I line-dried mine indoors, so I wouldn’t capture pollen in the fibers. The blankets come in a see-through zippered bag, which I saved to keep them in for long-term storage. These are excellent wool blankets at an excellent price, and they are as good, if not better, than the ones theyused to make.

I bought both the 3 lb. and the larger and heavier 4 lb. blanket (the subject of this review) for use on a reenactment camping event. I liked the three pound blanket better, even though it was smaller.

I put both through the washing machine before using them, and the 4 lb. blanket pilled severely. It took half an hour to de-pill the larger blanket, while the 3 lb. blanket came through the laundry unscathed.

Also, the larger blanket wasn’t as soft as the smaller one, either before or after washing. That being said, the 4 lb. blanket is 100% wool, a pleasant color (same as photo), large enough to cover a single bed easily, and warm.

It feels coarse and scratchy like an army blanket, but I think that’s the nature of a thick wool blanket and I wouldn’t consider it a fault. If you’re looing for a fuzzy lap blanket, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for an army blanket, this is exactly what you’d expect and is a good value.

When this blanket arrives you’ll want to wash it pr instructions and let it hang dry. (there will be a lot of lint) Then you will want to put it in the dryer with no heat with 4 or 5 fabric softener said to get the smell out! you’ll want to check your lint trap after about 15 minutes because it will be full.

Then you’ll have a nice soft blanket. I’m not sure how warm these will be as I’ve not had a chance to use them in the cold yet. I have a couple of vintage military blankets of 100% wool but these are getting more and more expensive every day so I thought I would try these.

At the very least these will make a great ground cover. I personally would just wait and find a good deal on a nice military blanket the next time. But that’s just me! Update! I have since purchased three of these and they ARE nice blankets.

For the money you can’t beat them!!.

This is a pretty heavy blanket but not so heavy you can’t kick it off. It had some aroma but a febreze spray took care of it immediately. It’s really keeping me warm. Its sturdy enough that I plan on getting some as car gifts for my children so they can learn the benefits of wool blankets.

It’s 90/10 wool n synthetic and attractively coloured.

Gave it 4 stars because it smelled like it came from a paint shop. Dry cleaned it once and the fumes dissipated somewhat but it might need a second wash to get rid of the smell. Came with a greasy type feel so I’m guessing it’s a protective treatment for storage or for the elements? Anyhow, blanket performed well at 65 degrees until it dropped to 55 degrees with a 90% humidity.

I think the moisture in the air allowed the cold air to impregnate the blanket more which had me battling conduction with the blanket itself. I was expecting more protection, but this isn’t a $200 blanket.

I’m going to give it 4 stars still with the value in mind and it truly is heavyweight at about 4lbs. Great around campfire or as additional thermal protection but not truly bushcraft quality as a stand alone sleep system.

The construction of this 80/20 wool blend has a fair number of weave irregularities. There is a strong chemical odor that comes from the flame retardand additive that makes it unusable indoors without its removal.

It took several hand washings and long spin cycles to remove this oily substance, which resulted in the color dye fading. After reshaping, line drying, and ironing with a hot dry iron, the blanket is now usable and I am satisfied for its intended use.

That said, I should have purchased another Pendelton which I loved from the moment I opened the package to now. You get what you pay for.

The only 100% wool blanket with no nasty chemicals added that I could find at a reasonable price. I get night sweats so I am using this blanket folded in half as a mattess pad between my fitted cotton sheet and memory foam topper and I am very happy with it.

The wool keeps me dry and I don’t get so over-heated. Now that I know this is a good product, I will buy another to use for the actual purpose of a blanket, lol. Not scratchy like military surplus wool blankets, but not soft either.

This blanket does not irritate my super sensitive skin, but I prefer a soft cotton sheet between me and it. Seems well made and I expect this blanket will still be in use many years down the road. If you need a good, warm blanket that breathes and naturally regulates temperature, this is a great choice.

Though it is a second quality (some threads are missing from the weave in one spot) the blanket is otherwise well made and warm. I’d buy another if I had the need. Good idea to hang it outside and let it air for a few days to reduce what I assume is the the “fire-proofing” odor!.

Nice quality thick blanket, woven fabric I love the color too, just what I was looking for.

So I’ll try to thoroughly review this blanket…first off, it’s much thicker than I was expecting! Although when received it was very stiff and had that musty wool smell, I ran it through a delicate wash and tumble dried with no heat.

It came out nice and lofty and less itchy. This thing is super warm and plenty big to cover all 3 of my kids on the couch. You can feel the quality of it once you get it to how you want it texture wise.

Every wool product needs some TLC at first to soften and smooth out but once you do you’ll love it forever. Don’t skip this, highly recommend!.

I purchase this blanket with intention on its originality and authenticism. As it turns out, and I quote, ” the real deal McCoy” is entirely and completely false! Let me explain. The original wool blankets that were made by the US Military is sewn onto the blanket in one of the corners and has the NSN number but the blanket that I received and I double check to make sure that it was not from a different description order item number, was completely false.

The blanket that I received was made by Rothco which in this case, does not make wool blankets that are contracted through the US Military. Although, Rothco makes some really good items that are replicated but it is not original.

And I purchase this item on the intention that this was going to be an authentic will blanket made by the US Military and it is not. I would recommend this blanket to anyone but they need to change its description.

Very good, well made blanket but Very misleading!.

I bought 2 wool blankets, one of the had a small hole. I returned it so it could be replaced. Vicki told me she was mailing it out that day. Well it never came so I had to email them no answer then I called.

Vicki tells me they are out of stock and she will refund me. I want my blanket they are still for sell on this site. So I was lied to. This is poor service tell the customer it’s on the way and it wasn’t.

Yo wasn’t going to refund me or say anything about it being out of stock. I am angry and I want my blanket.
