20 Best Women’S Hiking Shoes For Wide Feet (2023 Updated)

I admit I prefer the look of the previous version of the Sawtooth, but otherwise this is my favorite hiking shoe. I compared this to the Merrell Ventilator and Keen Targhee Vent that I also wear: The Oboz have a significantly stiffer sole, and so are more comfortable hiking on gravel and trail.

The squishy feel of the Merrell and Keen soles are ok for casual, and pavement, but for heavy hiking I really prefer the sole on the Oboz. It feels much more sure-footed, and I feel in more control of my stride.

The stiffer sole is really a great advantage for much of the hiking I do. After 50 miles of gravel and trail, I have no complaints about the quality or fit of this shoe. The toe box is comfortable. Not as obviously roomy as the Keen, but nothing matches Keen for this.

But a big improvement over the Merrell. I’ve worn the Merrells for many years, and have bought many pairs. The Merrell Ventilator is the coolest shoe for my hot feet, but for some reason the toe box is feeling more cramped now then before, and the sole uneven under my foot.

These Oboz have no problem at all. In general, I’d rate the 3 shoes this way: Oboz: allround best for hiking, having the surest footing, comfortable sole that shields sharp gravel, and good fit. The build quality seems fine so far (50+ mi of hiking).

I’m 220lbs, and really appreciate the stiff sole. The only drawback I can tell with the redesigned Oboz is the look; the previous design looked more rugged, and I wasn’t shy about treading through harsh environments.

The redesign is prettier to look at, but maybe when they look more worn I’ll get over the change in design. Keen: great fit, looks good for wearing around the office. The softest, squishiest sole of the 3.

Probably great for working and walking on hard, paved surfaces. Generally good for trail, but I prefer the sure-feel of the trail underfoot that the Oboz give, compared to the much bouncier feel of the Keens.

Merrell Ventilators: a long-time classic for many reasons. They are the coolest to wear for warm feet. The sole is closer to the squishy feel of the Keen than the stiff Oboz, I can feel the gravel poking through the soles.

In recent years I’ve noticed the fit just is no longer as good as the Keen and Oboz. My toes are cramped, and my feet feel like I’m always pushing against one side of the shoe or the other. I’ve tried going up a size, but it still just doesn’t have the secure feeling of the other two shoes.

I might be wearing my last pair of Ventilators. For all shoes, I wear the factory supplied insoles for a short time, then switch to Superfeet Green insoles. I often just take the Superfeet out of an old, worn out pair of shoes and put them in the new pair.

For each shoe, even an old pair of Superfeet are significantly cooler and more comfortable to wear than the factory insoles after breaking them in.

I have worn almost nothing but Oboz Sawtooth low shoes since the early days of the first model. This includes walking about 10 miles per day and hiking trips with some pretty serious terrain (Alps, Rockies).

The original performed exceptionally. The change to the II was imperceptible, but unfortunately that is not the same with the X. 1-loss of toebox size and ventilation resulting in a hotter shoe and less room.

Less ventilation in general on the shoe. 2-heel cup has changed in some way. I have narrow heels and still remember all the tricks to get heels not to slip. I cannot tie this shoe in a way that the heel does not slip.

I never had this problem with the Sawtooth or Sawtooth II. 3-upper is not as sturdy. I pronate and one of the miracles of the former Sawtooth models is that they were sturdy enough that I could not break the shoe.

After just one week of wear, the uppers no longer align over the soles, they are canted over to one side. This is an indication that my foot is fighting this new shoe and that it will not hold up. I’m expecting the crack near the sole to appear in a couple weeks.

4-break in. Putting on new Oboz has always been like butter. No rubs, nothing. While this shoe isn’t as sturdy, it also is oddly more stiff and less yielding, I have blisters for the first time in years.

I’ve seen this in other reviews as well. 5-sole-the jury is still out on whether the wear time will be longer. While this would be welcome, I would take the old sole back to get the old shoe back. Oboz has been a stellar company and responsive to constructive criticism.

I am hopeful they will take a look at the reviews this new model is getting and respond with an update. To all those who wear a women’s 9. 5, apologies as I’ve bought every available pair I could find, including used, to wait this out.

This style of boots with a ONE inch heel was exactly what I had been looking for, minus the sweater top. I thought I could get over that, so I purchased online. The sweather top is a really scratchy fabric, I could feel it through my leggings and on bare legs drove me mad! That being said I could not get over that issue after all.

The zipper worked well, the laces were useful for a better fit, which was a plus. The main problem for me other than the scratchy sweather top is half of the soles are made from a type of odd felt fabric which have ZERO traction, even with the tiny “traction strip” which really gives no traction AT ALL! I used to have a pair of boots with this same type of sole “fabric” before.

They are dangerous on wet and dry tile floors and another HUGE issue is they accumulate a ridiculous amount of hair, pet fur and lint with this type of sole! These Hiker boots will actually become giant slick sole hairballs! Boot bottoms such as these ARE NOT safe to wear working in hair salons or on walking on ice either! I am lint rolling the soles and returning! Imagine lint rolling boot soles!?!! Totally disappointed! Torrid, could you PLEASE show a photo of the bottom of each piece of footwear and stop using the smooth felty fabric bottoms before all of us break our neck? Also Torrid, could you PLEASE list the heel size on each footwear description and if it has a zipper? Many of the descriptions are missing important pieces of useful information for us.

I really liked the look of these boots but was a little hesitant about ordering them after reading the reviews. They came quickly and I couldn’t wait to wear them. I’m on my feet all the time at work and these boots were super comfortable right out of the box.

I love them so much I may order the other color.

This style is exactly like a pair of boots I had years ago that I’ve never been able to find since. I love the chunkier styles that are more on trend but I also like to have a more sleek option like these.

The buckles add a bit of flair but the shape and color of these is the real star. As always with Torrid, I’m a 10 everywhere else but a 9 in all Torrid shoes.

I bought these a couple of weeks ago and was already disappointed when I took them out of the box. The picture online makes the shoes look a lot lighter in color than they actually are but it wasn’t that big of deal.

I have another pair of Columbias that are very comfortable so I thought the comfort would make up for the look. I was wrong. These are not comfortable at all. I could never imagine hiking in these or being on my feet for a long period of time.

Unfortunately they cannot be returned because I wore them for a couple of hours. ( I am constantly on my feet for my job and ended up purchasing another pair of shoes to get me through the day. ) I should have stuck with the other style I already owned and I’m very thankful I did not pay the $120 full price for these.

I’d been shopping for two months for shoes that I could hike in, were waterproof, and good enough looking to go out to dinner. I’m going to France for a month, only want to take one pair of shoes, and will be doing everything from hiking in the Alps to wine tasting in the Loire Valley and Burgundy, to walking all over Paris and eating in fine dining establishments.

THESE are those shoes! Super comfortable, with good support despite the soft padding, and great stability and traction on rocky trails. I love these shoes.

Excellent comfort and support. I previously have had two broken heels and have tried many shoes, sneakers. This product by far has been the best support for my feet, I originally purchased a pair for hiking but now use them for every day as well since I work on my feet all day and they provide me with tremendous support.

I now have purchased a total of 4 pairs in two different colors so I have them for future use as well. Highly recommended for hiking or everyday use.

I bought these for winter running. I really wanted these to work so I could have a pair of waterproof running shoes. I have narrow feet and usually wear a 7. 5 in shoes and boots but order an 8 in running shoes for extra room in the toe box.

I have a pair of Drainmakers in a 7. 5 so I thought it was the right call to order these in an 8 to get a looser fit–especially since these shoes are marked “true to size”. This size 8 was tighter fit tighter than my 7.

5 Drainmakers and another brand trail running shoes in a 7. 5. Perhaps I received a mismarked pair but these shoes did not work for me. It’s a real bummer because of the hassle of the return (minus $6 for return shipping too!) and they are sold out in an 8.

5 (which is a size I have never worn in any shoe). Pros, they look nice and seem well made but it’s a risk ordering these online.

These shoes got off to a very bad start with me – too narrow for my feet, and the worst part was the toe box area where the black part extends down into the shoe and eats up half the height of the toe area, which caused severe crushing of my toes and a lot of pain for months.

They felt so bad I had been on the verge of returning them, but felt I had no options for good shoes since I have extremely wide, impossible to please feet. My previous pair of LL Bean hiking shoes fit me like a glove and felt like they were custom made just for me – right out of the box.

I have never had a more comfortable pair of shoes, ever. I also loved the way they looked. Unfortunately, those got discontinued before I realized just how good they were. Eventually the shoes stretched out a bit and the toe box area became bearable, though still uncomfortable.

The true test came last fall when I went on an eight mile backpacking hike. Every other part of me was hurting badly. My feet, however, did not hurt at all.

This is my second time ordering these trail shoes. The first pair I ordered in the Spring of 2020 in a different color. They were so comfortable I couldn’t stop talking about them to anyone who would listen.

The soles were rugged and provided great traction. The ankles and arches provided great support. And due to my being overweight I doubted they would hold up longer than a few months. Finally 2 years later I needed a new pair.

I tried to order the color I previously, yet it was unavailable. As was my second choice. So I settled for these. ” Same shoe”, I reasoned. Well, much to my dismay this pair is not comfortable at all! In fact my feet hurt in them.

They do not feel like the soft cushy comfortable shoe of the last hikers I ordered and had been wearing. No these are hard. Stiff. And having lost over 50 pounds I thought they would felt even more comfortable on my knees and hips.

Nope. So what changed L. L. Bean in your production process of the last 2 years. Bring back the old design.

I bought an earlier edition of these for a multi-sport adventure trip (biking, hiking, kayaking, canyoning) in Croatia about 10 years ago. They worked great and I used them for mostly trail hiking after that.

Lasted a good while before the back of the inside heel wore through and my right back outer sole wore down too thin. Then I used them for gardening before finally pitching them. PROS: if you get hot feet like I do, these are fantastic shoes — lots of ventilation, but (the old version) gave you cushiony support.

Also they dry pretty quickly for a non waterproof shoe. CONS: the new edition feels much skimpier on the inside. I think the outer sole is more sturdy, but the inner sole is flat, thin and board-like.

I also agree with the other reviews that the ankle area rubs. Reasonable price for this shoe, but new model was a disappointment due to skimpier construction. Will be sending it back.

This is a nice looking shoe that is probably better suited for light walking or casual dress. The arch support is fantastic, but overall, it’s a very contoured fit with little room in the toe box. I ordered a full size up for hiking, but after just ten minutes walking in my living room, my toes were already sore from being squished.

I don’t have particularly wide feet, but even so, there’s just enough room to allow for swelling and natural movement. The material also did not feel sturdy enough to hold up on the trail. Straight out of the box, the shoes already appeared scuffed.

I’m disappointed to have to return these because the arch support is great. I hope Oboz will consider a wider option.

Out of the box, my first impression is that these are very pretty shoes. (Pretty enough the female tween in my life tried to steal them!) I love the jewel-toned teal. It gives a feeling of light iridescence.

I have avoided “trainer” type shoes for the last 20 years because they feel too heavy and “clunky,” but these are neither. Although there is a deep sole, significant arch support, and light ankle support, I feel like I can move freely.

The sole is angled to promote good running posture and prevent stress damage. I tested these running on concrete (which I never do due to pain) and I couldn’t pound my heels if I tried. While the sole is thick under the heels, the sole is thin and flexible under the toes.

I can move easily and I can feel the ground, which is necessary for safe trail running. The toe-box is roomy without being too big, and the textured soles provide good grip for attacking boulders and gravel (and even piles of mulch!).

I go barefoot as much as I can, and I really appreciate being able to feel the ground even when wearing shoes. There is a plastic toe-guard, but it is cut in on the edges to reduce weight and bulk. I did not find it getting in my way.

These shoes allowed me to move quickly and fluidly on rapidly-changing terrain even though many of the dirt areas were boggy due to Spring storms. My only complaint about these shoes is that I found them hard to get into.

The attached tongue wasn’t able to open up as much as I would like. Once on, the shoes did get a bit hot, but this was minimal compared to other brands I have tried. I usually wear much lighter shoes, so I think people who commonly wear athletic shoes would probably not notice either of these.

Pros: most comfortable hiking boots I’ve ever owned. Great traction, lightweight but supportive, reasonably water resistant. They require no break in and have never once given me a blister. I’ve taken them on multi-day backpacking trips, rock scrambles, and epic 20-mile peakbagging days without even a hotspot.

They are the best hiking boots I’ve ever owned, bar none. Except for one thing. I’ve gone through 2 pairs of these, and even returned and exchanged the first one after just a few months. The issue is that the uppers / ankle area absolutely fall apart.

Others have taken pictures of the same issues I have: if you brush your feet together, big holes happen quickly, and the back of the upper also starts to detach from the boot. After only a few months of (admittedly heavy) use, that doesn’t feel acceptable, especially since the soles clearly still had plenty of life in them.

I just had to throw out my second pair after just under one year with them since the uppers were destroyed and almost completely detached. And even so, I might still keep buying them. They’re that comfortable.

If LS improves the material used in the uppers, I’d be a lifelong customer.

Really enjoying my Trail Model shoes. I wanted something that would give me better traction on both rocks and loose gravel. I live in the Rocky Mountains. They are called Rocky for a reason. Last week I hiked in the National Park.

No slips on dry or wet loose rocky surfaces. The stone/bayleaf color is subtle and nice. Does not show dirt badly. The fit was totally right on. Good space in the toe area, but not too much. I do not have any slippage in the shoe.

I just purchased these at Burlington, MA store. They are fantastic! I am 63 and could not find a supportive and comfortable sneaker, decided to buy short hikers instead and they are fantastic! Comfortable, wide toe box, sturdy, extremely well constructed and supportive, lightweight, great price! Much better than the expensive new balance sneakers i was purchasing that never lasted more than a few months before wearing out.

as supportive and comfortable as my hiking boots, but as light as sneakers. Please don’t stop making them!.
