20 Best Used Irons For Beginners (2023 Updated)

Purchased a TW sand wedge with a few custom modifications, I ordered with an alternate shaft and bent strong one degree to be 55*. Club was shipped directly from Taylormade quickly which I was happy about.

Unfortunately after having the club checked by a reputable club builder, basically every spec was off. The length which was supposed to be standard was over half an inch short, the loft was 56, and the swingweight was significantly lighter than what’s listed as standard partially due to the shortened length.

I am extremely disappointed with the build quality from TM and expected more from such a big/reputable brand in this industry. Now I’m stuck with a club that is too short and would have to use a shaft extension to play at standard length.

Subpar quality control from the build shop at TM which unfortunately seems to be a relatively common issue. Side note the club head and grind are great. I’m just disappointed with my experience ordering a club with custom specs.

These Milled Grind 3 wedges are versatile for my game. I can hit it square or open it up on tight or fluffy lies. But the biggest difference I have experienced is how the MG3 gets the ball out of the bunker.

The wedge seems smoother and glides easier (sorry Ping) through the sand (and on grass for that matter). And this is in hard-packed, wet sand or standard muni, coarse sand. My technique is not all that great, but I’m guessing it is due to the milled grind sole, like it won’t get stuck.

Regarding the grooves and “raw” face, the teeth do seem to grab and spin the ball more than my Vokeys, and I play a firm ball. If there is one complaint, the MG3 definitely feels harder than Vokeys with the MG3 using a Tour Issue shaft.

Not sure if that has something to do with it. While I am still getting used to them, I feel more confident out of the bunker and in trying different shots, like flops to a tight pin location. Both of which I normally dread.

While I wish the wedge felt a little softer, I really can’t complain about the versatility and confidence it has given me.

Played these for almost a year now , about 40 rounds. Try to ignore reviews where they state right out of the box or played once and love them. Let’s hit them for awhile and really know the results. I love these irons.

Knew because of loft would be hitting one club less , 8 has replaced 7 and so on , but man these things fly. The 5 iron , nicknamed rocket , is now my driving iron. Being a senior golfer and play form the senior tees do play some par 4s that are less than 340 yards.

Well hello Rocket , so far has maxed out at 231 , averaged off tee 215-220. They are so solid , much easier to hold solid through contact. Slice is now a rarity , wish I could say non existent. Sound off impact is clear solid and refreshing.

Have read some reviews about holding their finish , mine have held up great. I play public courses so terrain not always the best , but mine have held up very well. Made such an impact on me and results one of my golf partners now owns a set and loves them.

They are beautiful irons that fly true straight and long and really help this old body when it doesn’t fell like helping.

For the past 10 years I have been playing with hand me down 1970’s clubs but recently started to rent newer clubs when I go out on golfing trips. On my last trip I was fortunate enough to try last year’s Sim’s as my rental and I shot the best round of my life.

Fast forward to the start of this season and I’m ready to update my bag. I attended a TaylorMade fitting event at my local pro shop and was fitted into the Sim2 Max OS as I was looking for the most forgivable club with the best distance and control.

During the fitting only the 7 iron was testing and I was averaging an additional 33% of distance on the shot tracker when compared to my prior set of club. While this addition in distance appears to be great it comes at a hidden cost.

The loft of the Sim2 Max OS was 10 degrees greater than what was currently in my bag and I didn’t realize this until my purchase and delivery of the clubs. The lofts on the Sim2 Max OS clubs are strong and the loft steps between irons are great.

It wasn’t until I had all my clubs at the range did I notice that gap between irons was much bigger than expected and too big for me to manage on the course leaving me in a lot of situation where I didn’t have the right club to hit a small green.

The other issue I had was with the club bounce. These clubs have a much higher than normal bounce which varies by club and if not properly managed by your grip and stance will lead you to skulling the ball.

The bounce is very high on the lower irons and this was problematic for me on par 3s. Due to the loft and the bounce I was unable to get the 4 or 5 irons to hit a ball off the ground and also had trouble getting my balls up in the air with the other irons.

When I was able to get them in the air the flight path was shallow and the ball had limited stopping power due to the flight path and roll. The only other thing to note was the club faces scratched and dinged easily and it was very noticeable after one bucket at the range and two rounds of golf.

While these clubs may be great for most people they were not great for me. The strong loft, high bounce, low flight, and limited stopping power were enough for me to try and return them. Before buying this set of clubs I would highly recommend that you get a proper fitting and conduct a gap test with the clubs prior to buying them.

Make sure you purchase them from an authorized dealer who has a reasonable return policy. If I’m unable to return these clubs I will be playing with buyers remorse the rest of the season.

Recently married, and a wedding gift from my wife was to go get fitted for new irons (beyond grateful). Went thinking I wanted some ping g425s, ended up going with the sim2 max irons. A lot more accurate/consistent during the fitting with the sims… Eventually they arrive and can’t hit these things to save my life!! Forgiveness my butt, I play a set of mizuno mp14s/Ben hogan 99 apex’s currently and will continue to do so.

Muscle back/blade, and Forged all the way! To make matters worse, I had a heavy top at the range and the speed pocket rubber insert on my 5 iron is now pushed inside the club. What the heck man! Beautiful clubs, but jeez, don’t make things like they used to I guess.

Wish I would’ve known what I know now and went with something different.

I got a bonus from work and decided I would treat myself to my first iron fitting at the PGA Tour Superstore. What a great decision for me! I knew the irons I wanted to get based on reading about them and, as it turns out, I couldn’t hit them to save my life! Of course, I have known about TaylorMade forever but I’ve never owned any of their equipment.

After almost an hour and a half hitting four different brands of irons, these were the clear winner. As a 61-year-old, I ended up with graphite shafts +1 inch. I am 6’5″ tall but I’ve always use standard off the rack clubs.

They feel so much more comfortable. When I bought these irons, I got the set including 5-AW. After four rounds, I ordered the 4 iron (a club I could never hit with my previous set). The trajectory and yards I have gained with the set of irons is nothing less than amazing for me.

I am going to retire on May 31 and will be out on the golf course often with these bad boys!.

I accidentally left my DW on the course on afternoon/evening while playing. As soon as I noticed it missing I turned back and asked all the groups behind me if they found it. No luck. Back at the clubhouse, I notified the cart attendants and called the golf pro, asking them to keep an eye out for the club.

In the meantime, I went ahead and ordered another, identical club, because that club is so sweet I knew it wasn’t coming back. I use it for chipping around the green and for shots in the 100-105 yd. range.

The loft allows the ball to land softly without me having to swing extra hard. It’s my favorite club. Highly recommend Cleveland HB Turbo Irons overall, but that club quickly became my favorite arrow in the quiver.

Purchased online from GolfDiscount. com, June 2022, received Irons 3-days later, worked out just fine. The CLHBT Irons are Impressive. I purchased the Irons with the Miyazeki Graphite shafts, WOW. I just played the clubs recently and enjoyed their confidence building performance.

I can even hit the 5-iron with ease, with my previous clubs I never pulled the 5-iron out the bag. The old metal shaft clubs felt uncontrollable, making them unusable for me. Glad I convinced myself to spend the money, Cheers!.

4-PW, steel, stiff. I wanted to buy the Cobra T-Rail irons when they first came out but couldn’t justify paying $1000 for only a set of irons. Purchased a set of Cobra F-Max, which were OK, played a couple rounds and saw the HB Turbos and caved.

Traded the F-Max irons for these and it only took 3 holes into my 1st round with these irons to know what I was missing. These irons completely absorbs the impact of the ball and the ball explodes off the face.

I gained 10 yards per club, which also took me a few holes to adjust to, but such a great feeling for a 60 year old gaining the 10 yards per club that I lost years ago.

I am a high handicap senior golfer that took up golf late in life and I decided to purchase a new set of clubs a year ago. My clubs were 10-12 years old and trying my friends newer clubs felt better than mine.

I went to a store that I am very comfortable with (they sell all brands) and a place where I have taken lessons at. My teaching pro turned me over to a fitter that brought me different top brands that I requested to try.

After watching me hit the various clubs and reviewing the shots on a monitor he left the fitting room and brought me a Wilson Launch Pad senior flex iron and all I could say was Wow. I was so skeptical that I kept picking up the other brand to see if they could match the forgiveness of the Wilson, they couldn’t! I bought the full set and added a 5 “wood” I was totally surprised that I was also gaining 10-15 yards on my 3 & 5 “woods” on the golf course and my new Launch Pad 13 degree driver… I went from 150-165 yards to 175-200 AND straight! YES, I am thrilled with my purchase and two of my friends have also purchased Launch Pads clubs after trying mine.

Knowing your skill level is very important, getting impartial advice makes all the difference in your comfort level. I never would have thought of Wilson if hadn’t been for the staff at Carl’s Golfland.

After hitting forged blades for a number of years playing many rounds a season, I needed irons that gave me more forgiveness on off center hits. I went from playing 2 1/2 rounds a week to max 4 rounds a month.

So forgiveness was pivotal. I saw a Peter Finch review of these Launchpad irons with the appearance of a hybrid design. He compared the Launchpad to new Stealth and Cobra iron sets. His opinion, pound for pound, was that these Wilson sticks were best value at $699.

So when these came up as new on eBay for $350 + S/H, I bought them. I have 27 holes in with them now and can say without reservation that these were well worth the money. I was having trouble getting a decent height with my ball flight and spin to hold the greens.

These clubs checked both improvement boxes. In conclusion, nice sticks, like the performance, happy with the purchase.

My Callaway Steelhead XRs are excellent and as forgiving as any, or at least I thought so. During a weak moment when weather prohibited me from playing, I made the plunge and bought a set of Launch Pads (4-PW).

As a 64-YO who shoots in the low to mid 90s, I had reached a plateau. I couldn’t break 90 consistently. With these, first time out I shot 91, then 92, then an 87! Unfortunately, winter is upon us, but I believe next year I’ll be consistently in the 80s.

They’re easy to hit, accurate and long. The looks don’t bother me at all, but apparently they bother my playing partners. If you have reached an impasse in your golf game, try these. You won’t be disappointed.

Hit these irons for the first time today. Weather was beautiful, 88 degrees with low humidity. Irons were smooth, balanced and strong. I had to back off a couple of irons due to distance but they were spot on as far as direction and control.

More than anything I was impressed with the trajectory. I’m a high ball hitter and these were more of a medium height. I shot a smooth 73 and if not foe aStupid double on a par 3 (my fault) I’d have had a 71.

I decided to try a different set of irons this year and selected these Mizuno irons. A friend of mine swears by them so I said” let’s give them a whirl”. To date I have used the irons for several rounds and I am glad I selected them.

They are lighter than my previous set but the consistency is exceptional, even on off center hits. I don’t shape shots well but with these clubs just aim for the green. I get better distance and accuracy with the longer irons which is what I wanted to improve.

The trajectory on most of my hits is high and the approach shots are landing softly. This has been a good selection, sorry I waited to change.

Because of the Winter weather have only played with these Irons twice now. Both times in 40 degree weather. But am impressed with their forgiveness, and especially the long irons. They look good and I believe better designed than my old set, which I really liked but were getting just too worn to continue to use.

When they say nothing feels like a Mizuno, they aren’t lying. I was playing the Mizuno JPX921 Forged and thought nothing could feel better. I was very happy with them. Then I saw a pic of the 221’s and 225’s and it was love at first sight.

I demoed both but the feel of a well struck Mizuno blade is the feel that dreams are made of. I didn’t need new irons, my JPX921’s were only a year old (150 rounds) but all I could think about was the 221’s.

I bit the bullet and have played close to 10 rounds and 8 range sessions and I couldn’t be happier. The feel, turf interaction, shot control, looks at address and distance control are absolutely amazing.

I was worried that I might lose some distance going to blades, not only have I maintained distance, but my club gaps are much more consistent at 10-13yds between clubs and distance control with half and 3/4 swings are much more reliable.

I’m not a low single digit handicap, I’m an 8-10 hdcp and I have no problem playing these irons, as a matter of fact my iron play has improved since I started using the 221’s If you’re on the fence about buying these irons, don’t hesitate, you won’t be sorry.

I love these things. I ordered the 2 iron to use as a driving iron replacement for my MMC18 2 iron. I wanted something more versatile and had more current technology. I kid you not, as soon as I left the driving range I went to the PGA Tour Superstore and bought the 3 and 4 irons.

I absolutely love the flight, the control and the stopping power of the ball when you put it up in your stance and throw the ball way up in the air. I must admit, I am a Mizuno fanboy for sure, but they have outdone themselves with this design.

By the way, the blacked out look is absolutely amazing and I now want all of my Mizuno clubs down the whole bag to have this look. hint. hint. Mizuno, hope you’re listening.

I received mine back in April and have been far happier with these irons then my old ones. This is as close to a standard combo set that you could ask for. G-8 are blade like (Wish the 7 was as well) but from 7-4 there is plenty of help.

As a 3 HC who was a 6 to start the season these offer that feel and workability with a little help in the long irons. In terms of distance, if these are fitted correctly gappings in the irons are very consistent with the only exception being 8-7.

The shorter end of the bag is less forgiving but if you are a decent enough player you will trade the forgiveness on that end for more control, but those short irons are still far more forgiving than a blade.
