20 Best Upside Down Tomato Planter (2023 Updated)

I have used Topsy Turvey’s for several years and have needed to replace the sponge protector in many of them after repeated use. Love the new design and especially the reservoir insert to control hydrating dispersment.

It is the same product we have used and worn out. They have improved the water system which is very nice. My husband loves his upside down tomatoes.

I have used these before with great results. Now they come with a sort of water spreader insert to disperse the water so it doesn’t drain down on the side.

I found these planters excellent. The material is sturdy. It needs to be put on gravel for better water drainage. I use mine on a lawn and I put the planter on 2 plastic egg trays (stuck on top of each other) which are a perfect size for this planter, it also ensures better air circulation underneath.

Great re-usable plant grower. Handy handles at side to help move. I have 3 and just waiting for potatoes to come thorough. Quick arrival from Litle fields farm and competative price.

I don’t think it drains as well as they say. Recent rains have caused new tomato leaves to curl. This affected only the tomatoes grown in Vigoroots; those in raised beds are fine (same compost used for both).

My alpine strawberries grown in Vigoroots seem to love it though.

I bought this big bag bed junior and another fabric bed from another company. This one works great. The fabric was heavier and better quality and it stands on its own without the need for additional support.

(The raised garden bed I bought from another supplier needed a framework for support. ) To hold it upright while I filled it, I set several rocks at the edges. I forgot to count so after I got some dirt in, I was fishing around in the dirt looking for all the rocks.

I recommend doing what surgeons do and count. Or if you have two people, you won’t need the rocks. Once I got a couple of bags of potting soil in, it stood on its own. It looks real nice in my garden.

Because of a knee injury my husband found it difficult to bend & construct more raised beds, so we decided to try these. They’re not perfect, but they’re so easy. Not sure how long they will last, but at this price we can always buy more new one’s.

I would have liked it if the material was a tad bit more rigid. The edges flop around and the edges of the soil don’t always get watered as thoroughly as I would like. That’s the only fault I could find.

I have plans to buy more next year.

Bought this because of the size to put where I have space for another “raised” bed. I expect the drainage will be good and it’s better than a solid material (wood, etc. ) for plant roots. It’s much less sturdy than I thought it would be.

Also took more soil than I expected. Haven’t planted yet because of 4 rainy days, but will today. Then we’ll see. I wouldn’t buy one again. The potato grow bag is much better constructed but not big enough for what I wanted here.

I bought 2 of the Bolo Hanging Planter a while back and I looove the way it looks in my home. My one complaint is that the plastic anchors that come with it to secure it in the ceiling are garbage. For a $50 planter I expected the good anchors that you screw in the wall.

These anchors required a pilot hole and still broke when put in. Because they broke the hook doesn’t sit perfectly flush to the ceiling, and you can see a gap between the ceiling and hook. Otherwise its a great product, just expect to purchase your own anchors.

This is a great hanging planter. I love the almost black matte surface. It’s unique from a lot of other planters because of the round bottom (it almost looks like half a pill capsule). However, that’s also a down point as you don’t have the option to sit it on a table or patio.

The handle is round, partially a gold color for accent, and comes with its own hanging chain and hook. The hook matches perfectly and can be hung directly on the ceiling or onto the wall. It’s perfect for a small space that needs a little decor but kept simple.

It does not come with an artificial plant. This is perfect and is hanging in the corner of my bathroom.

This planter works great for my herbs. There are only couple issues with it. One of the planters had cracks on some of the parts, but not to the point of falling apart. I didn’t want to go through the hassle of returning, so I just decided to keep it.

I used wood glue to seal it. The second one is the screw nuts at the bottom (that hold bottom rack) keep on unscrewing every time I move planters on uneven patio. Would be nice if they could include better quality wheels.

Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the purchase.

I read all the reviews so I was prepared for some challenges but I love putting stuff together so I went for it. It arrived well packed with all the necessary pieces. It did have a pretty strong smell that I assume was the stain.

The directions were okay. There were a couple places where it could have been clearer. The screws with the barrel nuts were almost impossible to install. I screwed the shelf slats down before putting on the bottom shelf.

The top edge had some lifting along the corner. I put some clear plastic corner trim (like you would put where wallpaper wraps a corner) to keep it from getting worse. I added some hooks for tools to the front.

We’ll see how it holds up.

Good value for the money. The wheels with wheel locks are a great addition as we can move it around our patio to follow the sun. Easy to assemble (though it took longer than 20 minutes LOL). All parts were there for both purchases.

The wood is prone to splitting as mentioned in another review, so slow and steady assembly is best. But everything is predrilled so it shouldn’t be an issue.

I put one in with my Audrey Ficus after I repotted it to help keep her hydrated since I had been a bit forgetful in watering her and she had lost several leaves because of it. Since I’ve gotten this globe I just fill it whenever I notice it’s empty and so far so good! These smaller ones are perfect for like 6-10in pots in my opinion.

They don’t take up as much bulk as the normal sized ones.

I received one as a gift. I love it! I have two plants that are placed away from my smaller plants. They are actually like trees now. I sometimes forget them when I an watering other plants. Now I don’t have to worry if I miss them.

They are perfect. I must also remark how lovely they look in my plants. It is totally art with a duty.

i ordered the prickly pear cactus, lavender, and aloe versions of this contraption. I noticed some of the instructions did not line up with what was actually packaged. Maybe it was just the cactus that wasn’t accurate.

It’s been a couple months or so since i started all three, so I don’t remember the exact details. I got them all started up without much trouble, even though i struggled cutting the planting and threading the wick (i’m just not good with those kinds of things, nor am I familiar with making/maintaining self-watering planters).

The aloe sprouted pretty quick! My normal household temperature falls in the range that they were said to germinate. The weather outside hasn’t been ideal for putting them outside yet, but I think they will really take off once they get more light than my windows can provide.

Right now they are chubby babies, and quite a few of them! I think all or nearly all of the seeds sprouted (~10). The cactus and the lavender have yet to sprout, although I think my household temperature is 5-10 degrees outside of their preferred sprouting range.

I didn’t think that would be too much of a problem, but here we are. Maybe they still have a chance if I can figure a way to get them to the right temperature. They haven’t dried out yet and haven’t gotten any mold/fungus.

i haven’t seen a positive review of these yet, and it makes it wonder how viable the seeds are, especially after considering the inaccurate instruction booklet.

I followed all the directions to a T to start the growing process of the tomato seeds with the included soil and glass jar. In the beginning everything was looking good and the seeds were all sprouting within a few days and just like the directions said, when they got to about 2 inches tall, to carefully remove all but the three of the best looking ones, so I did that.

Thankfully though all the others that I removed out of the glass jar I saved and transplanted in another pot with my own potting soil to place outside but kept the Back to the Roots glass jar with the three best looking new sprouts indoors by the sunroom window to get the best sun.

Unfortunately those three didn’t survive and never grew anymore and eventually wilted and died even after giving them the daily attention as required from the directions. But the success story is all the other sprouts that I originally saved and placed in an outdoor pot survived and are growing wonderfully and the cherry tomatoes have started to grow after several weeks and soon will be ripe enough to eat.

The directions don’t even suggest keeping the others but to only keep the three best looking sprouts in their provided glass jar but thankfully I saved all those others because those are the ones that actually successfully grew and the three in the pot in the glass jar never came to fruition.

So at least I still got a nice lot of cherry tomatoes out of the deal! #trynatural.

This a arrived in its cute recycled cardboard egg crate with all that’s needed to get started. Caveats: you need to put something under it to catch the water that will leak. Also, plan to repot the seedlings into larger pots VERY soon after they come up.

Sunflowers have a taproot that needs room to develop. The otherwise excellent instructions don’t really reference that. That aside, I am delighted! This kit was less expensive than buying plants and I am so very impressed with the variety of flowers included, which will guarantee a long blooming season and plenty of food for our local busy honeybees, tireless songbirds and sleek squirrel squad.

Varying heights, colors, and blooming times also make this a great statement for a planting bed. Sunflowers don’t require lots of patience, making them ideal for introducing small kids to the joys of gardening.

The soil at this 1947 time capsule house I’ve inherited is poor, but I think mulch and staking will help them do well. I think this is a great gift for pretty much anyone, but people trapped inside by The Rona (like me!) may particularly enjoy it.

The 3 tiers come all schrunched together in a plastic bag but straightened out when laid out. I installed the bottom layer today and it went very well. I will let the dirt settle and get rained on before I install the 2nd and 3rd layers.

It should be perfect for growing strawberries.

I planted the whopper strawberries and eversweet everbearing strawberries in this pyramid. The pyramid looks great and the strawberries have flourished in the container. No weeds which is a plus.

Just transplanted my strawberries, to the grow tier tube. Just want to say it uses 9 one cubic foot bags. How we wait and see. My bare roots are flowering. Added the strawberry food.

This self watering planter is so amazing. I don’t understand how I have lived without it. I have this self watering planter in my backyard we’re the sun is always beaming, and i always get lazy to get out their and water my plants.

Now having this planter saves my time and my plants from dying. My beautiful plants always look beautiful and Luscious green.

I have a total of 5 Crescent Garden Self Watering Planters, in all sizes and colors. The weather can reach into the 90s in the summer and my yard has very little shade. I have purchased other self watering planters in the past, but this is my new favorite brand.

I love how the garden hose fits perfectly into the in-take hole. I can walk away and do other things while the hose is filling up the planter. I tend to refill my planters or ‘top them off’ about 2 times per week the heat of the summer.

Less during the cooler months. The plants seem to adapt to the bottom watering system very quickly. My only complaint is that sometimes, depending on the planter, the blue ‘drop’ indicators get stuck in the up and/or down position.

I tap on the side of the planter a few times with the palm of my hand and the gauge unsticks itself and moves appropriately up or down. Will buy again and again as my budget allows.

I bought these planters because of the TrueDrop water level indicator. While I love that feature, I don’t love the look of the planters. They are fine with plants hanging over them but it would be nice to have both a nice looking planter as well as a water level indicator.

Can’t seem to find both.

I love these little planters. I get a thousand compliments when people see them and I love that my plants are thriving. I did give four stars because these can be pretty tricky when actually planting your plant.

They are quite small, so be aware you need a really small plant (and I bought the medium size). Once you actually get everything set up, they are perfect. It works be helpful if the directions were better and if there was a video to show you how unassemble, plant, and reassemble the pots.

Overall, I’m really happy. These would make great gifts! I will most likely transfer my succulents out and replace them with herbs when the weather becomes cold.

This Lechuza Cubeto self-watering planter is shallow relative to diameter, perfect for plants with small root system like Orchids, Bromeliads etc. I use it for Bromeliads Guzmania, it works great!

I have had 2 Root & Veg boxes for 1 year. I now wish I had gotten a regular earthbox instead because I have had much more success with them. I plant according to the EarthBox Planting Charts. I add water every day (twice in summer) until drainage hole overflows.

The root & veg boxes almost immediately overflow (this is very different from the standard earthbox). Like many others, I was sorely disappointed that this heavy box does not come with wheels. Last summer I planted a squash and zucchini in each of them.

The plants did well, looked healthy and grew to flowering size. Over the fall and winter (yes, it’s warm enough that I can grow in wither), I planted beets, radishes and carrots in one box. These plants never became more than greens.

The carrots barely grew beyond the tiniest seedlings. We harvested 1 radish from the box and ate all of the greens at the end of the season. In the other box we planted cilantro, chard and a collard plant.

The healthy beautiful cilantro died a few weeks after being transplanted to the root & veg box, the chard never grew and 1 plant died, but the collard did well giving us both greens and inflorescences that we ate like broccoli.

I transplanted several lettuce and cilantro plants to the box in the spring. The cilantro rapidly died, the red lettuce flattened out and the romaine remained upright. I planted one of each of these plants in a self-watering hanging basket (bowl), and the plants in the basket are thriving and doubling in size as compared with their siblings banished to the root & veg box.

I highly recommend checking the grates between seasons. I neglected to do this and now that my spring plants are failing, I wish I had. Something about this box is killing my plants. I’m just not sure what it is yet.

I have been using Earthboxes for more than 20 years and would not use anything else at this point. I live in North Carolina and the soil is just too hard to amend for residential gardening. Also, let’s not forget the snakes and other things that hide between the plants.

The Earthbox is pretty much set it and forget it as far as fertilizer and weeding. All you have to do is water and pick your produce when ready. I used to have a greenhouse and this produces more with much less effort and expense.

I promise you you will never get the yield from any other method of growing. I get literally hundreds of tomatoes from my four boxes. As I’m getting older, I invested in the raised frame with casters, just excellent.

Start off with one and I guarantee if you have the space, you’ll keep buying more. This is an incredible product.

I love the shape and size of the root box. My one complaint is the reservoir is too small. I have to water my mature plants often twice a day. When I water every day, they are bone dry (for mature plants).

All my original earth boxes, I can water every day or two with mature plants in them. Also, the water tube needs to be longer. It easily gets buried in the foliage of the mature plants. If it was a little bit taller, it would be easier to find and access.

I’ve purchased these before from Primrose & they’re just brilliant. Easy, functional, durable, space saving & just brilliant! Recently purchased some more as I’m really into growing veggies, fruits which is ideal to place these on top of large round planters which these service well.

I recommend these items & Primrose as a company. Bit more expensive but ok to use no matter how big or small or even any problems!.

I already have one of these and they are really handy, for protecting little cucumbers until they get going, it protects them from the cold and wet weather. Item arrived quickly and was well packaged.

I bought this cover to protect my tomato plants. One of them broke immediately and collapsed as the wires fell out. Truly garbage and I will try to return for a refund. Unusable.

I ordered these railing boxes, 2 sets actually so I would have 4 total dbl sided flower boxes to adorn our railings, and I wouldn’t trade them for any others I have seen. They are so easy to install on the railing and the 2 sides gives you twice the beautiful look of full flowers!!!!!! They are fabulous!!! I have always planted my summer flowers around the porch in the ground and I still did a small amount of those but initially ordered these because I am having stomach surgery in early July and won’t be able to enjoy tinkering with my flowers this summer.

With these I can stand erect and pluck all I want as I recover. I will ALWAYS however use these planters. I love them so much and I get many compliments on the unique look of them, being dbl sided and 100% adjustable!!! Even our carpet man asked where we got them.

I sat him down with laptop in hand and showed him where to find them,QVC of course, and wrote down the order # for him.

I have looked for over the fence planters. Nothing has fit my fence. Then these arrived and they are so very adjustable. They fit beautifully. I have a 4 foot white pvc picket fence and I purchased the white ones.

They blend right in and so far the flowers I planted are doing fine. I am ordering 2 more for maximum impact.

I ordered these for my deck to plant herbs. These fit the railing really well and seem sturdy. My railing is only about 2” wide. They are well constructed. I got the white, which is a creamy white bit looks great on the vinyl rail.

These are mad! Wanted some for ages and were hard to track down-then bob’s your uncle IWOOT’s on it! I have put herbs in mine and dangled in the window. You probably wont get a fixing on the underside of the window reveal due to a metal/concrete lintle BUT I’ve dangled them just past and up into the ceiling.

Great for supermarket potted herbs that nearly always die inside a week! They are a real talking point, everyone who sees them wants some. Really easy to assemble but do it over the sink to avoid mess and water the top reservoir SLOWLY.

I didn’t like the blue colour much so I sprayed them with Plasticote (B&Q) primer then a nice ivory colour to match my decor! Mmmmmm lush :-).

Would of given 5 stats but unfortunately when I bought mine the wire was not included and I ended up using a hook but really would of liked the wire piece!

Id like to say that I immediately fell in love with your products. I have fully automated AC infinity Pro tent setups. I love your teams style and high quality materials used. Great stuff guys. Just one little issue that kind of caused me to turn sour on the brand.

Its the fact that all of your ads and promo pics are CGI to the point of misleading the customer. For instance. The hanging drying racks. They look perfect in the ad. After recieving my purchase. My rack was all crooked, lop-sided, the wire imside is bent in several places causing it to be not so perfectly round with thw rigid stability portrayed in your ads.

Its unfortunate….

Every time I perchase an ACInfinity product; I’m expecting to get a very durable and reliable product. So for everything has overlapped my expectations. The fabric pots are not only thick( no collapsing ) the drainage has been the best out of all the bags I’ve tried.

Which we know will encourage better air pruning. And less root rot.

Ive tried a few different fabric pots and these ones are built solid! I love how they have the built holes for some LST. Going to try the square pots next so I can load my tent up and maximize space.

A raised bed would be really cool in the future too.

I had a college kid put this raised bed and trellis together for me as part of his work for college money. He did not have any trouble putting this planter together, nor any of the raised beds from Sams that he put together for me a month prior to this one.

I have not found any better raised beds than this one and another style ( no trellis) that I also got on this Sam’s site. The best raised beds at truly the BEST price. I hope Sam’s keeps these stocked.

Product assembled easily even though the instructions were not that legible. Knowing what the final idea was & being a technical guy helped. Most of the parts are the same size & they are all the same color so it is kind of like solving a puzzle! All the pieces were included & all fitted perfectly! It appears that it will work as stated & we fill it with soil & started some vegetables right away.

It’s late summer so we won’t use the cover until fall if there’s a frost or next spring with early crops!.

I would give this product zero stars, but this wasn’t an option. We could not put the trellis together, despite much effort. The instructions are minimal. The parts that were supposed to snap together did not snap together.

The base of the trellis does not fit properly over the reservoir. Thus, if we could have put the trellis together, it would have tilted. I called GS and spoke to a very nice person who said he would send me new instructions.

These were the same instructions we already had. He also suggested we watch the product video. The video did not show how to put the product together. I have always like GS products, so I am very disappointed.

This was an expensive item. I feel like I flushed my money down the toilet.

I echo some comments in here. Instructions not entirely clear, positioning cage on top of tank seems hit or miss, filling the soil without bulging the bag didn’t seem possible, self watering stick not self explanatory.

But I eventually figured it out. BUT. My brandywine tomato looks amazingly healthy. Perfect amount of moisture and roots that can breathe in the canvas bag. This thing works. If you get some algae slime on the bag it is no big deal.

Just spray it off. I recommend.

This is a great, versatile planter to set up in any spot in the yard or patio. Great size to add several plants, either climbers or tomatoes to give you a nice yield over the growing season. Self watering reservoir is on the bottom under the soil and easy to fill with a hose.

This is a super duper, low maintenance, sturdy planter. I don’t have to do much at all and the plants seem to love it. I planted three cucumbers and one cherry tomato in the middle as I ran out of space in other areas.

The bag seems to be very sturdy and long lasting. The plastic ring supports are tough and do not break off like other types. I think I will have this one for a long time.

As a growbag this was a reasonable size/volume but from a practical point of view it was very disappointing. I have tried various other brands over a few years but this year there was much less choice.

Where this Westland bag failed miserably was the fact that they had made hundreds of drainage holes along the back and front edges. This meant that during watering far too much water leaked out which is a total waste.

Drainage is all very well and good but I can make my own holes as required very quickly. Shame on Westland for “over thinking”. Wickes please find alternative suppliers in future.

Although it says tomato planter, I used one bag for peppers and another for pumpkins. I can leave it alone and have to water every now are then as the bag keeps it moist. Very smart and I have recommended it to other family members and friends.

Also, its cheaper when comparing £/L.
