20 Best Umbrella For Sun Protection (2023 Updated)

I go through a lot of umbrellas. I live in Arizona where the sun always shines. I’m fair Complected. Sunscreen and hats are not enough. I’ve always used an umbrella watching my children’s sporting events.

People alway made comments about there being no rain. Now people compliment my skin and ask what I use. I reply that it is my umbrella. Sunscreen is not enough. This UV Protection umbrella is the absolute best.

I have a travel size in my cars. I also have the next size up because everyone wants to share my umbrella shade. It’s wonderful. I feel cooler and better protected from the sun. It’s a little heavier but you get what you pay for.

Lighter weight umbrellas just aren’t made to last. This is a sturdy and dependable umbrella. I’ll never go back to an inferior ones. So worth the price. We owe it to ourselves to protect ourselves from the harmful UV rays.

Skin cancer is on the rise so raise this umbrella. You deserve the best.

I bought a fashion umbrella following the advice from my dermatologist on the importance in protecting my skin. It’s been 6 months and I use it everyday when I take my dog walking. I have not had any problem at all using the mechanism to open and close the umbrella.

I can easily open it with one hand when I am carrying my dog. It is lightweight and provides sufficient coverage. I like the fashion umbrella so much that I bought one for my daughter for Christmas to use when she walks her dog.

I also bought it for my friends as birthday gifts to protect their skin from the dangerous UVA and UVB rays. I like knowing that I am helping to protect them from skin cancer since I am a cancer survivor.

I’ve tested this umbrella on our most recent sunny, very hot days while walking on a blacktop parking lot. The temperature under the umbrella is noticeably cooler, like standing under a shade tree. It should be noted that the umbrella is not to be considered a cooling device and will do absolutely nothing for the intense humidity that often accompanies hot weather.

That being said, it will keep the sun from scorching your head and burning a hole through your skull. The light from the sun doesn’t even ********* the shielding. Since the umbrella’s foil-like covering is rather unique, I’ve been approached by strangers asking me about it and then scurrying to the closest internet connection to purchase one.

All of them the over-50 crowd, like me. Our demographic has seen too much of what the sun can do to human skin. As an aside, the umbrella also does indeed function very nicely as a rain umbrella, also! A very fine product that I’ve recommended to many who also want protection from the sun.

The silver outer covering of this umbrella is somewhat reflective, so it may bother people near you on a sunny day. I took it out on a windy day thinking it would reduce the amount of pulling force when the wind grabbed it, but I am not quite convinced there is any difference from a non double canopy umbrella.

It may stop the umbrella from inverting completely, but this double canopy umbrella still requires you to hang on tight or it will get away from you. I primarily bought it to walk the dog on rainy days, so more testing to come.

Still a good quality feel to this umbrella that adds the ability to reflect UV rays on sunny days.

This is the second Sun Tek UV double canopy umbrella that I had purchased. The first one lasted for 6 years and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The new one is not as well made as the first one I purchased nor is the canopy as sturdy.

It does not have an automatic push button to raise the canopy and it does not slide easily up the shaft.

When I bought this, I did not want to give a Bad review, but. The Seller, is GREAT! The umbrella. have been using a couple weeks now. I finally had to admit that I have turned Ten shades darker, and am Always suffering from Sunburn! It Looks great! It Works great! It is Made great! It is Huge! It gives a lot of Shade! But, it is just a Really Bad Umbrella, and does Nothing to block those Damaging Rays! My other Umbrellas always kept me Cool under the hot sun, not this one! I am always Burning Up! It is as if this just gives you your own, personal, traveling Shade, nothing else! I really need to Trash it, and buy a REAL Sunblock Umbrella! The damage it has Already Done, is irreversible! It will take a couple of Years to undo the damage that has been done to my skin, especially, my face!.

Arrived quickly. Looks great. Will be easy to spot on the beach. Had no difficulty setting up. Four stars only because it was a trial run in our yard and was unable to judge how well it performs in real beach wind.

Beautiful colors! Hope it fits in my friends table. This is a gift and they have been looking everywhere for a colorful stripped umbrella. Can’t wait to see their face when they unwrap it Christmas!

This umbrella is a great alternative to the traditional “twist into the sand” beach/lake umbrella, although it is possible to do that with this one if you choose. We prefer using the base and securing it with the spikes provided.

In addition to sand, the umbrella can be used anywhere in that manner. We have owned one for several years and decided to order a second to accommodate more people. It serves our needs perfectly.

I ordered THREE of these Ultimate Wondershade umbrellas in the RED! I gave one to my sister in law right when my niece was born in the summer (2009). It was PERFECT for when they went to the park or sat in the yard where a traditional “patio umbrella” wasn’t available.

I used one of them for myself at times, but MOSTLY my dogs (RIP) when I would be working in the garden during the summer! They LOVED being near me, but one was especially unhappy with the elements”! LOL He didn’t like it too hot, or too cold! Warm weather with a nice breeze in the shade for THAT boy, an Austrlian Shepard (Blue Heeler)! So I would pop up the umbrella for them to have the option of shade, and one stayed well within the limits of ALL the shade provided but this great travel umbrella, while the other had the option of laying half under in the shade and partially in the sunshine The Black Lab/German Shepard.

BOTH were 85 pound dogs! The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 STAR review is because the one my sister in law originally was given, she said had rusted (internally). When she went to store it in its travel bag, rust would fall out of the adjustable holes.

Can’t have rust around a baby!!! I think it was just a defective one, but it was too late for me to return it. I gave her the THIRD one from my order (my stash), because my precious niece needed shade, as a new July baby!!! I’m just “that kind” of Auntie!!! MINE (the second one) is JUST NOW starting to get “weathered” (2017).

The fabric is starting to fray a bit at the spokes, no doubt from over use! I have a new pup, for whom I assembled this, and he of course laid in the sun. So I took the liberty of enjoying the cover from our extended summer at the end of September 2017! I wish QVC would bring this item (or an updated version) back!!! I’ve used mine at outdoor concerts, the beach, and of course for my pups! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this umbrella! The elevated cup holders were PERFECT for stashing keys, drinks (if not a large bottom), AND, they were also strong enough to hold a beach bag or tote up of the sand or ground! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS.

It makes a PERFECT gift for ANYONE who enjoys the outdoors and wants some protection from the hot sun! But that’s all it let me choose. Bring it back!!!!.

I use these at work to keep shaded in 110 degree temps. You really need to use the provided ground anchors because if it takes a hard fall from a gust of wind the fabric will rip open. I’m usually on a hard surface such as concrete and asphalt so using a tool bag on the legs will work to keep it from falling over.

TBH these are really for the beach anyway. these are only worth it if you catch them on sale.

Pros: After waking up in my tent to steady rain, it was SO nice to stay dry while I popped out to “use the bathroom” and go back inside without a wet rain jacket. Also, super nice when cooking to keep fingers dry.

This umbrella also kept me cool when the sun came out – my hiking partners had sweat rolling down their faces and I was still cool and dry. I didn’t have to stop as often to put on or take off clothes to regulate temperature – I had a lot more leeway to stay comfortable with the umbrella.

Cons: I won’t use in strong winds as it probably would not hold up. The outermost ribs/spokes need some guidance as you open the umbrella so they curve down and don’t stick up. Those same ribs/spokes also need to be folded back up manually when closing the umbrella.

Essentially, the umbrella is not a completely automatic quick open-close like normal umbrellas. Getting the umbrella wrapped back up to fit in the bag also requires some manual folding of the fabric so the strap can reach all the way around to secure.

This takes a little extra time.

Very lightweight and reasonably durable. Love the fiberglass shaft and ribs as a non electrical conductor during thunderstorms with lightening. However, for long treks, the shaft is way too short and it is extremely uncomfortable to attempt to carry/hold – you end up holding your arm at an uncomfortable angle, which is very tiresome.

Look at the company provided photos and you’ll see what I’m describing The length of the shaft also reduces your field of view and airflow while trekking (see company’s photos). Hence, I modified and lengthened the shaft to make it more usable and versatile.

I removed the EVA foam handle and I created my own mounting system to mount onto my backpack’s shoulder strap and also at my hipbelt. lengthening the shaft provides a better field of view and increases the airflow (reducing the temperature underneath).

My hands are also free to use trekking poles. I also quickly noticed something – I perspire far less and I need about 33% less water for hydration. This means the 10+ ounces (umbrella with modified shaft) equals a savings of pounds that I used to carry in water.

I am also less tired after 10+ mile treks in 100 degree temperatures The lengthened umbrella is also easily adjustable to block the sun, when the sun is at lower angles, or coming from the sides, back, and/or front.

I have tested the modified umbrella for 100’s of miles in the sun, rain, and 15-20 mph winds. When it is too windy, I simply fold up the umbrella and continue walking. no need to store it as it is already secured to your backpack.

The lengthened umbrella also works great to provide shade when I take a break or stop to eat – you’re always in the shade. The umbrella is also excellent in the rain. It keeps me dry and I don’t need to wear a rain jacket, which makes me perspire way too much when carrying heavy loads.

I’ve been stopped numerous times while on the trails and asked how I modified the umbrella. I’ve had many with the original design ask for a list of my design modification materials, so they could modify their umbrellas.

One suggestion would be to increase the diameter of the umbrella for better coverage from the sun and rain. I believe the couple of ounces would be worth the additional coverage.

During my PCT – Section hike 2012 I already enjoyed the benefits of a hiking umbrella. For comfort nothing comes close in the heat. No sweating under a hat, much better sun protection and the tiny bit of weight is easily saved by the reduced amount of water one needs to carry.

Also a very nice accessory for the midday siesta. Wouldn’t want to go without one ever again. In 2012 I had the original „chrome dome“, this one from Six Moon Designs is at least as well built and even lighter.

Even if you take the regular (non-carbon-version), this is an excellent choice. Added Benefit: You can hike in most rainy conditions without a rain jacket, thus avoiding wetness due to condensation. Obviously in strong winds you would have to revert to your jacket.

Owned the mini auto Open Close Neverwet and sunguard Umbrella for one year. A few times in Denver on walks, the wind blew it inside out, but I was able to turn it back in and closed it until the wind died down.

I had used a black NON sunguard umbrella, and the difference in heat penetration was unbelievable. NO heat penetration with this umbrella. Stayed cool:).

This is like the most amazing thing to have handy at all times! I Love It! It’s so small and so cute! It’s affordable and a must have! I take mine everywhere, it literally fits in the palm of your hand.

Get You One of These Ladies! Rain or Sun it’s a Need for Me!.

Once this umbrella arrived, I discovered that it lacked the a strap to keep the umbrella together when not is used. This is ridiculous for an umbrella this size! Additionally, the pole size is non-standard requiring a special stand.

This was not included in the description. As if this was not enough — I bought a special stand put up the umbrella and it worked great. Day 2 — it rained– I didn’t use the umbrella. Day 3 — it was sunny, went out to my deck to use the umbrella — and it wouldn’t stay in the open position.

What a disappointment!! Further disappointment — by the time I ordered and received the stand — and was able to use the umbrella, I was past the 30 day return period and so paid money for an umbrella that worked for all of 1 day.

The pole is too thin and weak to hold the weight of the large umbrella. In order to tilt the umbrella it has to be cranked causing tension on the thin ropes and ultimately causing them to snap. Horrible design.

I still have two easy pasta left and the umbrella is broken and in the trash. Save your money.

This umbrella is not with it! I’ve only used it a couple times and just the slightest breeze I heard it cracking at the post near the top. After a few uses it then broke completely. I had a base at the bottom and it was used for my outdoor patio table.

Excellent source of shade but the size of the umbrella needs a more durable post!.

I purchased this after looking on many sites for an attractive black umbrella. Most were $500 or more. I was thrilled when I saw this umbrella, but had concerns that the quality would be low because of the fantastic price.

I am happy to say that I was wrong. This umbrella is beautiful! The mechanism to raise and lower the umbrella works easily. The fabric is substantial and trim is sewn on evenly. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.

We have two other Safavieh umbrellas that I purchased from QVC. They are great and have performed well. This, of course, was why I purchased this particular umbrella based on the idea that it would be as nice and as sturdy as the others.

Wrong. It is very unstable and is missing parts. I can’t help but believe that we were shipped a return product that was missing parts. I am very disappointed in QVC lately. When you get a product that is not good, you had better be sure that you check it out the first hours that you get it so that you can return it.

This umbrella of course cannot be returned. It’s a rip off. QVC has become so unethical.

Very disappointed with this purchase all around. Logged on to return this really cheap looking item and just now discovered that it is not eligible for a return. Too big/bulky isn’t a problem for every other retailer I have ever dealt with online so I don’t know why Zulily can’t handle this return.

The black of the umbrella is shiny, not matte like the pic. The white trim is also plastic looking and a very pure cheap white. Looks like the material used for tassels hanging from a bicycle’s handlebar.

If anyone wants to buy it from me for very cheap since it is non refundable please let me know.

Umbrella is pretty and handy. However I order the same one in black also for my child and it was cancelled by totes and I still need one for them – in a solid color, and think I should have been contacted B4 shipping rather than be blind sighted having received only one with an email the same day.

Now if I order another for my child, the amount of the order is likely to be too small for free shipping and I don’t feel it would be fair. Love my animal pattern mini, but disappointed that I received only one.

I totally love this umbrella and I have plenty! This one fits anywhere because it’s that small and compact. It’s a personal favorite thing of mine and I don’t leave home without my totes. I use it for sun protection and rain.

This umbrella for the most part is a game changer. Has a simple open/close push button. The blue/white pattern is stylish. The “”neverwet”” feature truly does work! The rain truly didnt penetrate thru the umbrella fabric Wasn’t soaked, just shake it off and you’re good.

The only issue I found, was that it could have been bigger. The compact feature is great, but the umbrella top is a little small for me. With that being said, yes I would recommend this umbrella. It just honestly works well.

Brought the umbrella to the beach over LDW and immediately noticed that the umbrella was missing the advertised sand spike. Instead it was just hollow at the flat end of the pole. Obviously it was more difficult to get the pole deeper into the sand this way and as a result the umbrella ended up flying and nearly hitting someone in the head.

Make sure you have the sand spike. BB&B is giving me a hard time trying to return this product even though I literally received in a few days ago.

I use these umbrellas to provide shade to tender plants that struggle in the summer heat. They also provide visual interest when paired with a comfortable lawn or patio chair.

It took some time to ship but the wait was worth it! The quality of the umbrella is impeccable. The white is so white and the material is really easy to clean. It looks so beautiful on our balcony! I’m so in love with it!.

The umbrella really is well made. It works right, easy to crank up and is nice and heavy duty. However the fabric fades ALOT. I’ve had this umbrella for 2 months of which it has mostly been tied up and the sun has faded the exposed color from grey to pink.

Don’t like that. Very nice looking umbrella but looks cheap now. Probably should have gone with Sunbrella fabric like my husband wanted.

Love the color. White but not too bright. Good size. Easy tilt. Is it the very best out there? Maybe not. But very good value and does the job.

Tab to close it up ripped off the umbrella proper and tore the fabric, on the very first use. Was able to repair it, but this is not strong enough and needs reinforcement. Was disappointed in that. Also, the handle doesn’t fit very snugly into the holder on my Sun Mountain cart.

I have another umbrella that has an EVA handle and fits snugly and doesn’t rattle around. I do like the big spot of shade it gives me, though!.

The 1st time I used the umbrella I had a hard time making the umbrella stay up. The catch mechanism that holds up the umbrella is made of plastic. If anything slightly touches the umbrella when up (going past another umbrella or under a very flimsy tree branch, the umbrella collapses).

It wouldn’t stay up at all the 2nd time I used it and when I looked a piece of the plastic tab which holds up the umbrella was gone. I returned it thinking it was faulty since I’d had a hard time making it stay up the 1st time I used it.

I tried another one at the store and when the umbrella was open I put a little pressure on the top with my hand and it collapsed. A fellow golfer purchased one last week and the first time out my umbrella (now a Clic Gear with a metal tab) bumped into hers and her’s collapsed.

There is a design flaw with these umbrellas as they collapse when the slightest pressure is put on them when open. I have had no problem with the Clic Gear.

This is a great umbrella for the golf course. One small disappointment, however: There is no little “catch-all” that allows you to secure the umbrella to your pull cart in windier conditions, or any any little rubber band to accomplish the job.

Need to have a way of doing this.

This beach umbrella is absolutely perfect! The colors are vibrant and the material appears to be durable and will hopefully last for years, if taken care of. The umbrella pole is also sturdy, has a tilt feature, and it’s tapered on the end for ease of use.

There is no installation required, so that’s a plus! With Walmart’s rollbacks and sales, you can’t beat the price!.

Bright colors and light weight. I have used these or similar umbrellas from Sam’s Club at my flower shop for many years. Glad to find replacements for my old ones. They arrived after a few days but cost more than twice what we used to pay at Sam’s.

But worth the money as we use them every day outside at our shop in all kinds of weather all year long to protect the flowers from rain and sun.

This is a great size for providing partial shade over a small pool. The colors are vibrant and it lifts your mood just to look at them! The pole is sturdy, but since I had to sink it in the ground I wish it had been just a bit longer.

The fabric is not flimsy yet the weight of the umbrella makes it easy to transport from one place to another. The price was the best I could find anywhere.

LED lights never worked, and connection between poles was damaged causing the umbrella to swing wildly even with low winds. I contacted the seller through Walmart but never received a reply. Too bad my return window has expired otherwise I would send it back.

Love the umbrella. It’s more burgandy than red but still absolutely beautiful. The fabric is excellent quality and has a little canvas feel to it. The pole is solid and opening the umbrella is easy and straightforward.

The only reason I did not give it a 5 star was because i cannot confirm that the light works as intended. I put the umbrella up a d took it down before it was fully charged for 24 hours. Even without the light, I would definitely recommend this umbrella because the quality is that good.

My 10 year old Coolibar umbrella broke in a strong wind when the anchor pulled out of the sand. Based on that umbrella I ordered a new umbrella from Coolibar. The new umbrella came defective, the poles stick together when the pin in one pole slides through the hole in the other.

The hole was not drilled in the right spot, couldn’t use it, poles wouldn’t stay together. They added a small anchor to the bottom pole which was obviously too small too hold the umbrella down but prevented me from using my own anchor.

Flimsy feel to the umbrella. I would give it zero stars if I could.

This is my 3rd Coolibar beach umbrella purchased over the past 20 or so years. I had purchased a sand anchor with a propeller-like base for the first, and it was easily transferred to the second 10 years ago.

The combination of the anchor & umbrella worked well over the years on often windy New England beaches. The new corkscrew base on the new umbrella doesn’t fit into my anchor, and I doubt the corkscrew design will stand up to the winds it will have to endure.

Since there is nothing wrong with the base of my old umbrella, I thought I might be able to use it with the new top, but the retaining pin doesn’t quite align with the hole on the base of the old umbrella.

That means I will only be able to use the new umbrella on the rare relatively calm days.

Coolibar, why did you change the design of this umbrella so that it no longer anchors into the ground properly? The old design was perfect! I suggest you reevaluate your design team’s choices and go back to what once made this umbrella great.

Take a look at your reviews – are all the unhappy customers worth the few bucks you saved when you lowered the quality? I’m not ordering any more of these until this problem is resolved.

Umbrella is good overall but could use some design improvement. Lack of a double canopy and the metal (not lighter polycarbonate or other lightweight durable material) framing and springs along each rib means this won’t hold up in strong winds although it’s relatively heavy.

The opening and closing mechanism is a single button but you do need two hands to exert a few pounds of force, especially to close. There is a horrible and strong off-gas smell (hopefully it is not toxic!) when you first open the umbrella so you need to air this out 1-2 days at first – best to do outside.

Also I would have liked the description to have clearly stated this is manufactured in China. Customer service is excellent as they emailed me when my choice was out of stock – though I’m not sure why website allowed the order.

In sum this seems to be solid UV blocking umbrella but I’m still searching for the ideal one as this isn’t it.

In my opinion this product represents excellent value for money and with the additional discount applicable on the day, it was exceptional. It was delivered the next day. It is quite heavy with the weight towards the one end with the canopy which made it a little difficult to locate through the hole in the centre of the table and into the base I had below.

It’s easier if you have help from another person to do this. The only criticism I have is the the thread on the bottom pole which screws into the too is quite fine and is easily crossed threaded. It also has to be aligned accurately for the threaded end to engage, so needed a bit of patience.

It remains to be seen how robust the umbrella is over a period of time but for the money it’s well worth the risk.

The app was very easy to use and a code was provided for 12% off first purchase which was a nice surprise. I ordered a large parasol which was dispatched the following day even though it was a bank holiday weekend.

Parasol arrived within a few days via Yodel who kept me informed of delivery time and provided a great service. Parasol is amazing, it is very good quality and is a very good size. It kept us dry during a rain and hail storm! Parasol is heavy so I bought a 36kg base for it which keeps it in place even when windy.

Would highly recommend both parasol and Aosom and will definitely be buying from Aosom again.

Quick delivery. Easy to put together but required three people to put it through the hole in my patio table. It is too heavy for one person to manage. Just note that the table needs to be able to take a 2″ diameter pole.

Comes with sandbags but no sand. I didn’t use the sandbags. I purchased two sealed 18kg bags of play sand and dropped the bags into the base as is. There is a cover on the base so all is good. No one sees the sandbags.

One small issue: I needed to even out the draw cable so that it opened evenly. No big deal. I just tugged on one side until both sides opened evenly. Time will tell if it is durable. I will need help in taking it down for the winter, so just be prepared that it is big and heavy.

So far it looks and works just like it is described here. Overall, a four-star. If it lasts a few seasons, I would then probably rate it higher but so far the out of the box experience is OK.

I bought one of SunGrubbies’ UV umbrellas over a year and a half ago. I live in Florida and love to walk outside and avoid as much sun exposure as possible. I had been using a regular small black umbrella which I doubted its ability to really protect me.

I did a Google search and found the SunGrubbies site and bought mine from them. It’s now been a year and a half of using it everyday during my hour+ walks and it’s still going strong. I open and close it I don’t know how many times throughout my walks and every part of it still continues to be reliable.

I wondered how it would do in a rainstorm but now, after using it in numerous Florida rainstorms, I love that I can count on being kept dry as well as protected from the sun. So neat to find a product that lives up to what its website says.

It proved very useful to keep the sun off. Unlike a rain umbrella, to make maximum use of the umbrella, you have to always be cognizant of which direction the sun is coming from. I sometimes thought a larger umbrella or an oval one would be more valuable because of this.

These umbrellas were a lifesaver in the heat and rain of a Florida summer. They kept the sun off and worked as well for rain. They are lightweight and compact, quick to extend and fold. They fit in a bag or backpack outside bottle pocket, too.

The service from GolfBox was again outstanding. Product arrived within days of placing the order and in excellent condition. The umbrella is a replacement and of superior quality to my last umbrella.

This has a large canopy, is easy to fold and fits neatly in the carrier on the golf bag. Very pleased with the service and my purchase.

I’m a Callaway Irons and Woods player so only made sense to purchase a Callaway Umbrella even if it was not to be used on course. My pups love the protection it provides for our walks during the rain.

A quality folding umbrella is almost an oxymoron, as folding umbrellas are always cheap and fall apart within the same season. If they catch some wind on the underside, cheap umbrellas generally die on the spot.

I bought this umbrella after reading a review to the effect that it was nearly indestructible. This appears to be correct. It also folds into a really small package, so it can be taken anywhere. It looks like a well-made object, which counts for something.

And it sheds better than other umbrellas I have used. On the other hand, I did not realize how small it was when unfolded. So it really will not be a hiking umbrella unless you are under four feet tall.

The material of this umbrella is not worth of what I pay. It’s just a small and light in size.

The Euroshirm is fantastic. I had it out with 50mph winds and it stood up to the challenge!
