20 Best Shea Moisture Products For 4C Hair (2023 Updated)

I hate that I didn’t like this hair product, because I really like the shampoo and conditioner of this line. But this smoothie was hugely disappointing. It has a very slimy/gluey texture that does not mix/spread into my hair well at all.

The first time I used it my hair was quite wet. I tried to work the product in my hands before applying, but was still left with white splotches I had to wipe away/in. Since it didn’t spread, I ended up using a lot of product.

After a few hours (when my hair would be dried with other products), my hair felt crunchy like a mousse, but sticky like a pomade. It had no natural movement and looked wet. I tried it a 2nd time on damp hair – not as wet as the 1st time – and used a lot less product.

It didn’t have the stickiness like before but looked the same. I had little frizz, but it was still stiff like if I added glue to my hair. Both times it leaves my hair looking fried – similar to when it’s damaged and fried with heat or chemicals.

It’s stiff, whispy, and dry. The container says you can add to dry hair, but it’s like adding glue. Not a good situation. The only positive thing I say about it is that it smells good enough to eat. Unfortunately, I can definitely not recommend this to anyone.

There has been a new formula change to this product once again. I just wanted to put that out there for all of the folks out there that may not know this already. The newest version that’s out contains water as the first ingredient, coconut fruit juice as the second ingredient, and glycerin (vegetable) as the third ingredient.

Shea butter is listed as the 5th ingredient. And, the last ingredient listed is fragrance. At this point, I think, I have bought and tried every version that Shea Moisture has ever come out with this product before.

I can personally say that between the original version and the latest version, there is no major difference that I have found, even though they of course have different formulations of course. If you have a looser curl pattern, you use less, and if you have a more tighter curl pattern, or if you have thick or very thick hair, then you would use more.

It dries completely clear, it has the same scent, but it seems to be less strongly scented than I remember. Do I feel that it’s worth buying? Yes. I have hair where I can’t use styling gel on it back to back, because it will start to dry out.

So, I honestly prefer styling creams the most. But, a really good styling cream isn’t easy to come by. But, because this is a more concentrated cream that will last you a pretty good while, then it is definitely more cost effective to invest in, rather than something that you can buy and that will last you 2 weeks or so.

So, overall, I am really glad that I chose to give this new version that’s out a try, because, I’d rather have soft, touchable hair any day over stiff, crunchy, hair any day.

I originally had a love-hate relationship with SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I think it’s important to know that less is more with this product. Just for reference, I have low porosity 3a/b fine, natural long curly hair.

With other products I’ve been so used to using a ton of product, but when I did this with the curl enhancing smoothie it left my curls weighed down and honestly, tired looking. This product can really build up on your hair if you use too much!!! I started using less product and I started to like it SO MUCH more! So, a little goes a long way!! I usually wet my hair, section it, and rake the product in for best results.

It smells really good and it’s easy to use, but you need to find the right amount that works for YOU. It’s well priced and easy to find at most stores.

I use this daily on my curly hair. It doesn’t leave my hair greasy feeling or looking like some of the other products I’ve used over the years, and I like the light coconut scent. As others have commented, it is a thick product and difficult to get out of the bottle, but my solution for that is to use a pump top from another product (like Mrs.

Meyers hand soap) cut to the length needed for the SheaMoisture bottle. I save the screw-on top and use it toward the end of the bottle when the pump won’t get out the last bit. Then I turn the bottle upside down, and when that doesn’t work any more, I get a plastic knife and scrape the rest out.

It’s too good to leave any behind!!.

It took me a while to fall in love with this product. It took a lot of trial and error to find the right amount for my hair (fine, high porosity waves/curls). Once I did though, I’ve been blown away every wash day I use this.

It doesn’t make my hair feel silky like some other creams I use, but it definitely gives my hair something it craves. Gives me finer clumps, compared to something like bounce curl avocado cream (that gives me big juicy clumps), so I use this when I want more volume and smaller curl clumps.

This lasts me FOREVER, as I only use a dime sized amount for my whole head.

I have 3a/3b curls and got this after reading so many rave reviews. Based on the name style milk, I thought that this would have a thinner consistency, but it’s almost like a leave-in conditioner (though with less slip).

I agree with other reviews that say this product is too thick to be in a squeeze bottle; I normally have to unscrew the cap completely to get out enough product. I put in the Shea Moisture Jamaican castor oil leave in conditioner, then follow it up with this style milk.

Together they give my curls good hold and definition, and do a good job of reducing frizz (even better than some salon products I have tried, in fact). I do feel like that products combination is a bit thick for my fine hair, so I might branch out and try some gels eventually, but I will definitely be finishing this bottle.

Oh, and I personally love the smell, but I know that not everyone is a fan of coconut.

I have 4a, 4b, and 4c hair and it has been very hard to find products that work for all of my textures. I used this custard alone and it immediately made my hair soft, but when my hair dried, my hair felt kind of rough.

Then i decided to use it with the extra moisture detangler(I used the detangler and it didn’t work very well by itself either) and these two products combined were THE BOMB!!! I took my twists out expecting them to be lifeless and dull but they were soft and DEFINED!!! I didn’t even think it was going to be defined because I usually have to rake products through my hair to get curl definition, and that day I was just lazy and slapped on the products and twisted, but this hairstyle came out awesome.

Its really a shame though because I have to put my hair in mini twists this evening. Overall, I am a VERY impressed customer and will be repurchasing.

I’m not huge on writing reviews but I feel this is one of the most underrated twist creams on the market! I love this product it honestly keeps my hair hydrated for a minimum of five days! I do finger coils on my hair about every two weeks and this product keeps my hair shinning and intact for at least a week! I do like to combine this product with any of the Aunt Jackie’s hair gels and it keeps my finger coils for even longer! This also works really for twist outs! I bought this product about 6 months ago and I still have half a jar, it’s a thicker consistency product so a little goes a long way!.

I was very happy to try this product being that I am transitioning from relaxed to natural. The smell of the product was pleasant and I could smell the coconut in the product as well. I liked that the product had no sulfates, no parabens, and not tested on animals.

I used this product before styling my natural hair as instructed, to my freshly shampooed, damp hair. The product is thick so I began applying the product from the roots of my head to the ends. My hair is pretty thick so I had to use a lot.

I noticed that it left a white residue on my hair, which I did not like so I immediately washed it out. I can not recommend this product as a curl primer for my hair, which is definitely 4C, but maybe it would be best suited as a conditioner.

I have seen that other girls with more curly-coily texture have better success with it and I see their curl definition, but not everyone’s hair texture, etc. is the same. If there was one tip I could give, it would be to make sure your hair is well-moistened with water, which may help the product blend in better and reduce the white residue.

I wouldn’t recommend this product, personally, but you may have better luck with your hair type.

I can’t find this product in store but I love it so much I bought a bout 6 bottles from a hair supplier online. They no longer carry it so I came to the source! This product is the ONLY product that keeps my curls moisturized and as the day goes by they got softer and bouncier! I now use it on my sons hair and I need it to always be available.

I have seen a lot recently about primers in styling so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. My hair is different textures all over ( a combo of 3B/C,4A). I tried it first as a leave in for a twist out.

I know thats not what its indicated for, but I figured why not. It definitely gave my twist out a little more hold. But the real magic was in how soft it made my hair feel and the smell! So good!The second time, I used it as the bottle indicated on a wash and go.

I don’t generally style my hair that way because it doesn’t last, but this helped my curls stay defined. It did not cut down on the frizz, but I definitely had more definition. I probably would not buy this again because I have found other products that do what this can do and then some.

I think it would be used best for people who are more curly, less coily. (because of the frizz element).

I loved it so much that just from using it “once” I actually went out the next day to see if I could find more. I wasn’t able to find it at the three different beauty supply stores that I traveled to, so I just ordered four more online today.

I’ll start off by saying this, I have 2 different type of textures when it comes to my hair. I have 4a & 4b type hair very course/thick. And to be quite honest it’s very hard to find a product that “my” (emphasis on “MY”) hair likes.

“My hair” LOVES THIS STUFF! I picked this up for the first time a few days ago just because I saw that it was new, along wit the shea moisture coconut & hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie (a product that my hair likes and receives very well) @ Walmart.

I’ve never done a wash and go before and I understand that some people from what I’ve seen on YouTube use the shingling method. I know that using the shingling method is optional but I know for a fact, I would have to do that method to be able to achieve the results that I would want because of how thick my hair is and to be honest it looks like too much time and effort, so I just did my normal two strand twist.

But as I started using this product on my freshly washed hair (washed with *shea moisture coconut and hibiscus shampoo*, conditioned with *shea moisture jamaican black castor oil strengthen & restore rinse out conditioner*, and leave in conditioned with *shea moisture red palm oil & cocoa butter rinse out or leave in conditioner*) I noticed that the product WAS NOT thick at all.

That alone made me very skeptical. I am not going to even lie, I honestly thought that I just wasted my money. Until I grabbed a section of my hair and placed the product on my hair and hunty!!! Talk about broken fingers because the slip that occurred while my fingers dance around my curl definition that immediately formed sheesshhhhh! My twists were amazingly juicy with absolutely no residue and it is day 2 and I am in love.

I definitely love this product! The consistency of the product far as how it feels eh. but THE RESULTS oh baby yasss! 5 stars because that consistency can be overlooked because it did exactly what it was supposed to do define my hair and to make my curls pop!.

The Coconut Custard Gel-Oil has been out of stock everywhere for 18mths. I finally ran out of my stash. Tried the Coconut Hibiscus Gel Souffle but it has agave and made my hair sticky. I have very fine curly hair.

Walmart was restocked but it is a reformulation. Smells the same (amazing) the texture is slightly different but still lightweight which is all I need to tame frizz and keep my curls soft but intact.

In my journey to find the perfect “wash-and-go” twistout oil, I finally found my holy grail product! After washing, deep conditioning and putting in a leave-in mixed with a bit of argon oil to my very damp hair, I applied the Wash N Go Defining Gel Oil to my hair, twisted it up and let it air dry overnight.

I applied a little of the Wash N Go Curl Revival Oil to my hands for the takedown and the results were unbelievable. EXCELLENT definition without crunch, my hair was soft and smooth and exceptionally shiny.

I’m on day 2 of the twistout and the curls are still defined, shiny and soft – all I did was smooth a little of the Curl Revival Oil on my hair, and I’m gtg. Really love this product!!!!.

IšverstiShow in original languageFirstly, this brand is magnificent and I love a lot of their products. I’ll start by saying that my hair density is medium and is a few inches past my shoulders. Naturally my hair air dries wavy and fluffy but majorly lack volume on the top of my head.

However, add a little product with hair scrunching and loose curls appear. As for this product, the cream is very thick and a little goes a long way. Especially when applying to the root area, too much looks greasy.

It is pleasantly light scented and is versatile in the fact that I can let my hair air dry or blow dry with a diffuser. Which by the way is my favorite method because my curls look more defined and hair feels softer.

Someone with naturally defined curls would benefit the best using this product then just leaving hair to air dry.

10/10 really works wondering! Keeps curls in tact and nice all day. Minimized frizzy wss and tangles. Since you only need a small amount, the container lasts forever! Very cheep for what your getting.

Love this stuff. I am mixed (Jamaican dad, Irish mom) and I have fine but very curly hair. My curls are tight and coily. This is the best product I have found so far. It keeps my curls defined, and stretched out so my hair isn’t too poofy and works magic as far as de-frizzing.

Also makes my hair incredibly soft, and keeps tangles at bay. I highly recommend this product for curly-headed ladies looking to tame their manes. Nice smell too. If you are trying to choose between this product and the Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie I would go with this product.

I tried the curl enhancing smoothie and I hated it. Left my hair more tangly, frizzy, and poofy, and I did not appreciate the strong smell.

Then when her hair is just slightly damp, she’ll put a bit more on her hands and scrunch it into the ends to give extra definition.

This is not meant to replace your leave in conditioner or detangler whatsoever. This is a styling product and using it as anything other than that would be a huge mistake. This does add some hydration along with slight hold.

I always recommend allowing your hair to dry fully before touching it. This product saturates your hair really well and thus takes a while to dry. I always use a light hydrating mist leave in or very light creamy textured one.

I then apply this styling mousse and a hair oil. I allow to air dry and then I toss and fluff my curls. If you want a slight bit more hold I would suggest another product OR make your own simple flaxseed gel and mix both the mousse and gel.

This will give you defined, juicy curls. Pls keep in mind that flaxseed gel goes bad quickly so you have to keep in the fridge and use often. It’s super easy to make and worth the fridge cold gel feeling.

I love several Shea Moisture products and this one smells delicious, so I’m pretty bummed this product didn’t work out for me. I figured if it didn’t enhance my waves, it would at least add moisture to my hair or work as a leave in conditioner, but unfortunately it was pretty heavy and just sat on top of my hair.

It never really seemed to penetrate my hair shaft at any point, therefore I can’t claim any positive benefits from using it. (Well, besides my hair smelling good 😉!) However, it might be a great product for the right hair type work much better on thicker, coarse hair that can really tolerate heavier creams.

The consistency reminds me of butter or coconut oil before it melts (see pic). It has some really great ingredients, and per the packaging, it’s made with fair trade shea butter cruelty free, which is a plus in my book! It also says it has NO parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, animal testing, or petroleum and is color safe.

I have a huge jar left, so I will likely pass it on to a friend or family member in hopes they like it, and while I won’t repurchase, I will continue to purchase other Shea Moisture products! 🤍 Will I repurchase?: No 🤍 Rating: 3/5.

Since Shea Moisture came out with this product, they have put out different reformulations, but in regards to the present formulation that is out now, it honestly is the closest one to the original formula.

Even though this product says it’s for thick, curly hair, I have fine textured, naturally wavy hair that is of low density and I can still use it. I don’t use a lot of it though because it is a concentrated product and due to my having wavy hair, I use only a small amount on my hair at a time so that it doesn’t end up getting heavily weighed down and start to look greasy.

But, if you are someone with a kids tighter curl pattern and happen to have thick hair, I is okay to use more on your hair, just as long as you happen to come upon the right amount that works best for it.

Don’t worry if it happens to take a bit of trial and error to find the right amount that works best for your individual hair. It’s just a natural part of all of our hair journeys. This product can be used on both wet and dry (morning hair).

Now, I happen to have this curl smoothie in almost every size that they currently offer it in. I don’t like a lot of hold to my hair, as I don’t like crunchy feeling hair at all. However, if you are someone that can’t go without gel in your hair for added hold, then you can most definitely use this product first and then layer gel on top.

If you do happen to use this product in your hair all alone by itself, like the way that I choose to use it, then you will need to refresh your hair with more product in between your hair wash days, because this product only provides a very light hold at best.

I’ve had wavy/curly hair my whole life I used to use heat on it every day for years! Back in 2019, I stopped and started taking care of my curls meaning no heat and trying to figure out a hair routine that keeps my hair looking good.

I’ve been using the shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie this entire time and it does wonders for my hair!! I wash and condition my hair in the shower and once Im out, i’ll use a leave in conditioner and then the curl enhancing smoothie and Ill let it air dry for a few hours.

Once my hair is dry, Ill scrunch out the crunchiness I get perfect cute looking curls each time! I swear by this product! Every time I try to skip this product to test out something else, my hair gets frizzy and puffy.

I have used this product for longer than I can remember. It was literally my holy grail hair product. I finally loved my natural hair because of it. It was the one item in my routine that I never attempted to try something new to see if it was better and I would tell everyone about it.

Back then the reviews of this product were mostly purely praise. If you look at the pinned most helpful positive review, it was 5 stars, but it was also from 6 years ago. You’ve since changed the ingredients and the result has mostly been terrible.

And you can tell by the countless reviews and what has now resulted in a low star average. What I just do not understand is WHY, why would you not change back to the original formula that was so amazing and got tons of praise? Especially since the new formula has mostly bombed….

I’m truly just disappointed, I want the old amazing formula back. It’s been many years and for me nothing I’ve tried in that time has come close to what this used to be. Please please bring back the original AMAZING formula!.

I know there have been many complaints about the texture of the product but i just bought a new jar from walmart and it is nice and jelly like consistency and easy to work with. The previous jar had this weird firm jelly consistency.

I managed to work with it by taking a small amount and rubbing my palms together to melt the product down. But glad to report the old formula is back! Great product and only product i have found so far that gives me day 3 and even 4 hair! Maintains curl definition for my 3a hair! Love this product.

You need to experiment to figure out the proper amount. I just a dime size for each of the sections of my hair and i have quite alot of it, and this seems to work fine. Make sure your hair has enough moisture and spray some water if it starts getting dry as this makes the product easier to work with.

First lemme say – I love Shea Mountaion products! This one, however, is awful. I bought for my thick textured crly hair, and it was terrible. As others have said – it’s like gloppy jell-o. I thought I could scoop some up and rub between my palms to get it to warm up/smooth out and just not be so gloopy, but that just caused little balls of goop to get all over the floor and my bathroom rug.

So I tried to apply the rest into my hair, but the little balls of gloop remained. I put back in the cabinet and bought something else. When the new stuff ran out, decided to give the Gel Souffle another shot, since I didn’t think it could be possibly as bad as I rememberd, but yup – still terrible.

Not only that, but my hair feels like it has a thick coating of wax on it. This time, I just tossed the almost full tub of it so I don’t accidentally give it a third chance. Total waste of $20. : (.

This mask is great. I have 3c/4a curl patterns. It is not too thick/moisturizing to where it leaves a residue or film, but is still nourishing enough to where I can tell when I haven’t used it! I use it every week, or sometimes every other time I wash my hair.

I have continued to purchase and haven’t stopped buying since the first time I bought this (I believe I started buying in 2019). It smells great, doesn’t weigh hair down, but still soaks into my hair.

I typically use it with the shampoo and conditioner in the same line, but it works just as well when I use another line or brand. Great value for the price. Highly recommend!.

First of all. this smells HEAVENLY. It smells like a tropical drink, and it works amazingly. I have hair of all porosities, so when I applied it, I first put like a dime sized amount for all of my hair (i have short hair right now) and sprayed water, rubbed it in, sprayed again, and used my scalp massager until my hair was no longer *moisty*.

my hair felt like a literal cloud. next day (today), my hair still feels amazing. I will say, it didn’t make my curls ~pop~ like i was expecting, but i was looking for more of a deep conditioner type of thing anyway and i grabbed it by accident lol.

TL;DR, works amazingly, smells amazing, gives more deep conditioner energy than curl enhancing smoothie but is still great.

Hear me out, this used to be the best stuff. It was the perfect consistency and texture for curly hair heads. It kept your curls in shape while also keeping them healthy. And then the brand got bought out and the formula changed.

Now the consistency is really thick and rubbery. It’s been a minute since I used because of this. The pricing for this is pretty good considering. If you’re just wanting to start out somewhere on your curly hair journey, I’d say get this but even then, there’s better brands out there for you to use and start with.

This is a bit of a preliminary review, as I’ve only used it a few times so far, but I am very happy with it. My hair ranges from 2b-3a and I only started treating it as wavy-curly a few months ago — before that I had no idea my hair wasn’t just straight and full of cowlicks or something! Many people said that this stuff was too heavy for wavy hair, so I was avoiding it, but then I saw the travel size at Target and said “what the hell, I’ll give it a try.

” My hair is actually very coarse. So I tried a very small quantity of it, watered down slightly, expecting nothing good. but wow, it works! Curl definition way more than I expected. The product smells so good, too! My only concern is that day-after hair seems to lose the curl a bit more than with other products, but as I’m still trying to get my routine settled it might not be the SheaMoisture causing that.

And I am able to get them back with a little Curls curl moisturizer, etc. So right now? Thumbs up for this!.

Ingredients listed online and ingredients listed on actual product are not the same. Specifically, online, it states that the fragrance is an essential oil blend. On the actual product, it only states “fragrance”.

Synthetic? Maybe, but I won’t waste my money finding out. Returning several Shea Moisture products for the same reason. Disappointed in the brand.

SheaMoisture is a great brand and everyone in my house has a favorite. My fiancé uses the and I love the for my son and for me. Although I like coconut, and this product smelled great, it didn’t really deliver on smooth hair and curls.

I felt like I had to use half the bottle to properly coat all of my hair and even then it didn’t do much to keep my thick, curly hair moisturized. Lots of their products are amazing, I just didn’t connect with this one.

I have 3c hair and both of my sons have textures different than mine so I’m always looking for a product that we all can use. I do alot of twists and braids on their hair and do twists, wash n go’s, curly puffs, etc, on mine.

Curling creams are literally a must have here so it was only fitting to give this curling cream a try. First of all, I want to say the smell is fantastic!! It has such a soothing aroma almost like it could be a candle or body spray.

The ingredients are also a bonus because there is honey, water, shea butter, oils, and glycerin, to name a few. There’s also no harsh chemicals like parabens and phthalate. I have low porosity hair that can be on the drier side most days so moisture is a must for me.

I love that this cream provides my hair with the moisture it craves, defines my curls, and also adds some shine without being overpowering. The whipped texture is airy and doesn’t weigh my hair down.

A little bit goes a long way and I’m able to two strand twist my hair without having my hair feeling greasy or heavy. This makes for a great twist out as well because when I twist at night and take the twist apart in the morning, my hair is soft and bouncy and I love it!! I have also been able to use this on sons’ hair.

Their hair isn’t as fine as mine but the cream still does a great job at curling their hair as well. Definitely a great product!! It smells awesome, is lightweight, and you don’t have to use alot at one time.

Oh how I wanted to love this product. I use the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey and Madura Oil Hair Masque regularly and wanted to try other SheaMoisture products. My hair is normal porosity, high density, 2b, 2c, and 3a.

This product smells amazing and it did define my curls. That is where the positives ended though. The problem was that my hair became very frizzy after a few hours. I could have lived with that possibly, but it also made my hair VERY dry and dull.

It didn’t feel soft at all, more like it was coated with product, and extremely dry. I have tried using more, using less, doing a deep conditioning treatment before, watching the dew points, using more gel, less gel, etc.

and the problems remain. Maybe because it is a cream vs the custard I normally use… sadly I think this one will have to be given away. It does smell amazing and it did define my curls, but for me the negatives outweigh the positives.

If creams work for your hair, give this one a try. It just didn’t work for me.

I have mixed feelings. When I use this product without a gel, it feels like there’s a layer of film/wax or something on my hair. But when I’ve added Flora&Curl Sweet Hibiscus Gel and diffused, the results are fantastic! My hair is soft, voluminous, and has great definition.

For reference, I have fine, low porosity, 2C-3B curls. I found that applying this cream with soaking wet hair is best, and in this case, I have had to apply it generously (as opposed to “less is more,” I found that wasn’t enough and left my hair frizzy).

When it’s applied on wet hair, it has great slip and feels good, but when it’s air dried without gel, it doesn’t feel as good. But overall, as long as I apply a gel and diffuse to dry, I am pleased with the results this cream gives me.
