I put it together in about 15 minutes. I would have been quicker, but it took me a couple of minutes to realize the instructions provided were not for this model. Regardless, it was quick and simple.

Connected it to a Stihl MS 291 Farm Boss with a 20″ bar and new rip chain. Slabbed up some beautiful 2″ thick x 18″ wide x 12′ long cherry for a project. It was easy to handle and operate! 18″ wide is the absolute maximum this model can cut.

This is perfect for the hobbyist that wants to mill their own lumber. It’s very well built and I love the fact that you only need your chainsaw tool to make any adjustments. So you’re not carrying around additional tools.

I tried a regular chain on my saw at first. It works OK. A ripping chain is almost $70 for my saw! So I took my old chain and filed it down to 10 degrees. Works so much better. And a lot faster. Leaves a lot of saw marks so get ready to sand.

But for the price and the performance, it’s perfect for me.

First off, I used to be a professional lumberjack. I just bought a Husqvarna saw. Bought brand new jerry can for gas. Properly mixed 50:1 oil with premium gasoline. Saw died after 6 hours. Still under warranty.

Brand new saw. Have proof of all my purchases and Husqvarna just said I mixed fuel improperly w/o any proof. I said I have all the proof that I didn’t and they said doesn’t matter. Every time I reached out with more proof and evidence they gave me another run around and excuse.

Their machine malfunctioned after 6hrs and they won’t honor the warranty. It’s so frustrating because I didn’t do anything wrong. The dealer I called told me Husqvarna doesn’t honor their warranty anymore and that there is nothing I can do.

Buyer beware. I’ll be buying Stihl from now on as I’ve heard they honor their warranty.

Purchased this chainsaw because it had a 24” bar. This saw will get the job done quick. As with any saw this size it’s a little heavier than most but it’s very well balanced and while using it I didn’t find that it mattered.

The saw has plenty of power and we have great luck with all of the husky saws we own. The 455 and above saws will do quick work if you’re clearing or doing storm cleanup. I prefer Husky over Stihl.

I’m disabled with severe muscle and tendon tears in the left half of my back and two crushed discs, and thus in severe pain 24/7/365. Once one is surviving on disability, it’s impossible to afford most services of companies to do things for you anymore, so it now becomes things one has to do on their own.

One of those things was figuring out how to save on bills, like the electric bill, and a wood stove for the winter was a superb example. Once the money was saved up to get the stove and piping for it (and put up myself, which was really fun with my back!), now I needed wood.

There was no way I could afford to buy wood. So decided no matter the pain, I would have to cut and split my own. Living in the country made it easy to find trees that were down from storms – in peoples’ yards, or where I could get to them easily.

Many trees were already halfway seasoned. One tree in particular, a black walnut, was old and dead and hard as rock. I got the 455 Rancher because of the price and because it seemed to have good specs.

I’ve used it for almost two years and it runs good and gets the job done. Once in a while it may give a fart in summer time and give trouble starting, but not often. It’s not powerful, but I got the black walnut cut up in 18″ pieces (limbs that I didn’t have to split) pretty easily.

The trunk, having a 3′ diameter, was another creature. The 20″ bar made it a little hard to do, but the motor at least had just enough power to get as much as I could out of that trunk. I think I had to stop at about 2′ diameter which left about 35′ of trunk (I wish I’d had the money to have it taken to the sawmill and cut into long slabs so I could have made a really nice desk out of it.

I mean think of it, black walnut, a *beautiful* wood for furniture!). It’s a tough little chainsaw. It even got run over by my ’90 Chevy half ton truck and all it got were some rubber marks on the case and ran like nothing had happened to it.

It’s still not a *powerful* saw, so keep that in mind. It can do large trees *IF* one knows what they’re doing, but will take a while longer to do them. A sharp chain is an *extreme* must with this saw so that the engine doesn’t have to work so hard.

I’d recommend this chainsaw mainly for smaller stuff than I used it for. I always wished I’d gotten something *meant* for the things I was using/needing a chainsaw for. This saw was great at doing anything with trees that were 1′ diameter or smaller.

It’s easy to use, easy to start, easy to clean. It does have a little trouble after a while with the bar oil feeder. it starts to give a lot more than is needed and adjusting it doesn’t seem to help.

I never could figure out how to fix it, but it didn’t use it up so fast I needed to keep gallons and gallons around, just starts using a little more than is really necessary, that’s all. It’s a little heavy, for just a saw for mostly homeowners with small tree and shrub work to do, but since it takes a beating and keeps running, this is the ticket for those folks.

Overall, if you don’t plan to cut timber larger than 1′ in diameter, this is the saw to get, especially because the price is nice and deals can be found all over easily.

My 455 Rancher is currently with a dealer awaiting warranty service approval. Generally, I praise Husqvarna in quality, so I likely bought a rare defective item from Lowe’s. It’s to be noted, that Lowe’s and there employees proved thoroughly useless in assistance.

This 455 Rancher behaved oddly from the start with the brake handle being a bit vibratory. With perhaps no more than 20 hours actual run time on the chainsaw, while cutting a log, it seized and the cover plate along with the entire brake clutch assembly shot off and out into the woods.

Always wear PPE, less I might have lost an eye and some finger to shrapnel. The coil spring for the braking mechanism looked like a stretch slinky. The plastic mounting components were shredded. Again, I think this a fluke against Husqvarna’s usual quality and reliability.

Hopefully, there warranty and service department will prove above average and replace the unit.

I bought this saw as a replacement for a Husqvarna I had for over 25 years. That saw was a beast and and I cut many a tree with it. It was extremely durable and just kept on running. After 25 years it started giving me more trouble than it was worth so I bought this Rancher.

I can’t speak to the durability of this one yet as I’ve only had it for a few month and have only cut one large Cherry tree and some misc. debris across a 4 wheeler trail but it doesn’t seem to have the power that my old Husqvarna did? It cuts well but it seems like it struggles a bit more than my old one.

Also, after that one tree (it was a big one) and those few smaller downed trees, the chain was so dull it almost wouldn’t cut anymore. I’m happy enough with the saw and time will tell on how well it holds up but it just doesn’t seem to have the power of my old one and I’m not sure why the chain would get so dull so fast?.

I installed the 1/4 20 x 1-3/4″ bolts to lock down handle boss was installed with lock washers between boss and end bracket, not between screw cap and boss. Of course, they loosened. That was my mistake.

The use of Bolts/Nuts that have the same tool as chainsaw bar nuts is great. Could the bosses be connected with the same? This way, one tool is needed. Hex wrenches are easily lost in a pile of sawdust, whereas everyone will have an extra chainsaw wrench lying around, and these are easier to find if dropped.

The only real gripe with the assembly is the lack of access to the chain tension screw on a 395XP saw. The saw must be removed from the bracket to adjust chain tension, requiring width to be set to 6″ or so first.

Two operations just to adjust the tension. A right-angle flat head driver was not brought to the worksite, so this was not an option. This would have avoided the disassembly/assembly process and will be used next time if chain loosens during slabbing.

I was skeptical about how it would work, but it met and beat all my expectations. It was easy to put together and is very good quality. I was cutting a 24 inch red oak log, and it worked great.

Very easy to put together and set up. Very intuitive to use. Materials seem to be quality. Its a lot of work to mill up bigger hardwood but its a lot of fun if your into mechanical and working with your hands.

I don’t have a lot of chainsaw experience but wanted something for my house and 1 acre of trees behind my home. I’m working slowly to clear the area and leave the biggest trees for shade. I have used this a couple times and the biggest bonus is no pull start.

The power that I need is there and the balance seemed good to me even when using a 6-Ahr. I bought a 2 pack of High Output 6-Ahr batteries instead of a single 12 so I could use them on more tools and charge one while using the other.

I already have an 8, 9, and 12. My only real issue so far is with the oil. There is nothing that says what recommended oil to use and I was told there are now some thicker oils and thinner oils on the market.

I would at least like to see them have a recommendation on website or in paperwork. Also, when I store the chainsaw after using it leaks oil. It was stored horizontal on a shelf for a while (like I used to keep my gas chainsaw) and left a huge puddle of oil.

Recently I noticed a hanging nail slot on the back and it now has a place on the wall with a bucket underneath. The bucket has some drops that may just be runoff but nothing like the original puddle.

My brother has more experience than I do and I got to let him have a go at it. He’s not convinced it is better than his S* brand and he said his only concern was battery life and having enough batteries to run as long as he needed.

He was impressed with its weight balance and power also.

Not a very well built chainsaw, coming from a Husqvarna 435. The motor is plenty powerful and the battery lasts almost through a whole 1 foot pine felling, sawing, and limbing. But none of your other Milwaukee batteries are useful in this thing, so you’ll have to shell out another $300 for more run time.

Thats just too much expense for what feels like a not so great saw. The dogs on it are way too short. It leaked more oil than I liked. Liked to throw chains and wouldnt hold tension – it got loose or fell off 4 times in one charge.

I tried too much and not enough tightening. And you cant get this wet! Overall I could buy a LOT of gas chainsaw for the same price – you wouldnt accept this lack of robustness from a gas saw at half the price If you’re running it indoors or can afford to buy another battery or two, this’ll do.

If you have money to spare this would be a great truck toolbox addition, ready to go (keep the oil in a bottle) and plenty strong for making the cut through a few trees blocking your trail.

This thing works great. I was skeptical at first but it works better than expected. The rails Granberg makes for the top or first cut work pretty good too, but there are other ways to skin that cat, using a short nail & string line, the set several nails to the string all down the log & lay a board on top of the nails and use the board as the rail for the first cut.

We have just started using the Granberg Alaskan Mill, and it performs as advertised on the box. It’s relatively easy to assemble (although not all bolts and nuts matched the drawings) and easy to adjust.

Sturdy but yet light enough to handle easily. Only two complaints. It took ages to receive the mill after ordering in May. This was due to COVID and manufacturing delays. Second, some ‘square-headed bolts’ tend to gouge into the frame and are difficult to unseat when re-adjusting the mill.

I used this to mill red pine. Set up was straightforward, the tool is well-made and adjusts easily and accurately. I would purchase a ratcheting wrench to go with the tools provided. When milling certain thicknesses, a ratchet would be easier to tighten the bolts.

Also, follow manufacturer’s recommendation for power head cc’s to help you cut faster. I was a little underpowered, but the mill itself worked great. I am ready to tackle some burr oak next. Nice to be able to take storm damaged trees and harvest them into usable lumber.

Well, This is an update to my last review. After now having the saw for over 6 months now, I can say this, “When its running, it runs very well”. Now, that being said, I am not having an issue KEEPING it running.

Every time it goes back to idle, it stalls out. (I use premixed fuel only!) So, I am going to see what the “Tech services” people at Makita have to say on Monday. I know this unit has in the past had an issue with going from full throttle back to idle so i always have slowed it down easy.

But now, it dies right out. It will start right back up by putting choke on half way and one pull it starts, but sorry, I need my saw to idle. I have fell more the 20 huge ash trees this summer and cut them up.

So it did do what I wanted it to do, but the saw needs to keep running in order for me to give it my full blessing. I will keep everyone posted as to what happens next!.

This is a rebranded Dolmar which Makita took over back in 1991. Dolmar is a top notch company better then Stihl in my opinion. Makita Engineering Germany GmbH (Dolmar) is one of the oldest manufacturers of portable gasoline chainsaws and is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany.

The company founder, Emil Lerp, developed in 1927 the “type A” saw, which weighed 125 lb and required two men to operate. It was tested on Mount Dolmar in the Thüringer forest and the company took its name from the test site.

This chainsaw works very well. Very easy to start, well balanced, cuts very quickly, good bar size for the power head. The quality is obvious, made in Germany, feels very well constructed and is, has a magnesium crankcase, anti vibration springs work great.

When this saw is at full throttle, almost 14,000rpm, it runs so smooth, very well balanced engine. Loads of power, awesome saw!.

This is my 3rd chainsaw in past 15 or so years: Stihl MS350, Makita DCS6401, Makita EA6100P. I live on 6 acres, half of it forest. Cook, heat, warm water all with firewood. Have big trees on steep hill, cutting mostly windblown trees.

All very dangerous, very difficult on steep inclines. Previous two saws I bought were used, beaten saws, Makita 6401 was discarted from commercial use by arborist, but it still proved to be a work-horse.

So, choosing Makita again was a no-brainer. The new EA6100P has all features as all pro competitors: A spring load pull start, fuel bubble to pump fuel initially, one lever to choke, run and stop. These features are a not big deal, but I like them.

The saw is lighter than the previous, but it really does not matter as carrying the saw to the job is the easiest thing compared to the rest of work. The saw cuts well, but the previous did just the same: it is mostly about having a sharp chain.

With Stihl I used to hand sharpen, but in retrospect, it was a bad idea. Electric sharpener I use now gets the chain really sharp, the saw goes through a rock hard 3ft diameter douglas-fir in seconds just by using the saw own weight through the cut.

What is better? A lot. * The gas and oil fill stoppers. These provide very positive closing and easy opening. Big deal? Well, my Stihl saw died while the bayonet stopper on bar oil filler somehow popped out during a dangerous cut that took all the attention.

* The chain cover over the drive sprocket provides no pockets to pack sawdust, it remains clean, unclogged. * The real air filter. * Very well thought out top cover, so easy off, see all critical parts.

Everything remains clean. * New orange color. I work alone, often go back to get tools. I like finding my saw right away. * It is quiet! I never wore ear protection, because it is important to sense what is going on with the work.

I want to hear. This saw is quiet enough that I do not have to worry about loss of hearing. * All my saws worked without vibrations, so does this one. May be all saws are like that, I do not know. * Costs 1/2 of equivalent Stihl saw, but I feel that Makita is a better saw.

The Jawsaw works very well for what I want it to do. It is relatively light allowing me to use it even with a chronic elbow problem. You do need to use some force on the back handle but if you just let the saw do the cutting it has not been an issue.

I mainly got the saw to cut a lot of smaller tree stumps that remained after using a chainsaw. It was really a safety issue because they were easy to trip over particularly when leaves fell in the fall.

Using the saw in a horizontal position I was able to get very close to the ground and cut the stumps easily. I also had no difficulty cutting branches and fallen limbs that were just under 4 inches in diameter.

The fact that it is battery powered is great since I live in the woods and was easily able to transport it without the extension cord. I wouldn’t say it has a lot of power but it was sufficient to do everything I wanted to do.

I’m a senior citizen and really like the added safety with this design. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase. I think they make great products as I also have one of their grass trimmer/edgers which is excellent.

The customer service is also excellent. Prior to getting this Jawsaw I had purchased their 14 inch battery chainsaw. It was too heavy for me to use and I was able to return it without any difficulties.

I bought this because I had a small dead tree that needed to go. I usually use a cordless sawzall for this sort of thing but my husband kept giving me excuses about the battery for it. After waiting two months for him to never use his chainsaw I decided to buy my own saw.

It was easy to set up. The chain oil is included even though the tag says it isn’t. I have batteries I use in my string trimmer and blower (both which I love). I first went to the bothersome tree and in less than a minute it was gone.

Then I thought, I have this mostly charged battery, let’s see what you can do. I went over to some pine trees with dead branches on the bottom. I was able to cut a pretty big pile before the battery quit.

So big it took the backhoe and clamp to move it to the burn pile (aka rat condo). I was ready to quit long before the battery was. It was also quite easy to use. I’m 51 YO with scoliosis and RA. Pretty much anything I do hurts.

I have to triage my tasks because I usually don’t make it through the list. I’m not going to lie, this hurt my hands, but so does holding a coffee pot;) I expected my arm and shoulder muscles to be debilitatingly sore the next day but I honestly couldn’t even tell I did anything! If you’re on the fence about this, just go ahead and get it.

The price is very reasonable for this bad boy.

I bought the electric version and was very happy with it but the chain came off during a lengthy cutting job and I could not get it back on properly (no owners manual). I had used it many times before but I tried it on a larger branch and it became stuck.

my bad! My wife wanted me to buy the battery version and I did (still no owners manual) and I used it on a number of small branches today. THIS TOOL IS GREAT. It makes less noise than the electric one (I THINK.

) It makes a big job no job at all just like the electric one which I hope to fix at some point. Owners manual please! I don’t regret the electric tool purchase. I completed many projects in minutes! Buy this tool.

I bought this chainsaw from the Saskatoon store in Confederation a month ago. Absolute worst purchase ever. This saw has zero power and stalls out every time. Changing the chain is near impossible a few guys at work tried and so far the fastest change took about an hour.

The lock always sticks on and its near impossible to cut anything when the chain wont spin. Ive owned a few chainsaws over the years and loved Poulan and Stihl brands. Good power in them, fast easy chain swaps and reliable.

Husqvarna is total junk nothing but problems right from day 1. Id avoid this brand like the plague nothing but headaches and agravation.

Chainsaw was in good condition with just a few minor cosmetic scuffs. This one needed the carb adjusted for best results. After adjusting the low jet and high jet along with the idle the saw ran like a champ.

I used a tachometer to help with carb adjustments. I suggest to know how to do this or have someone else who does so the saw runs as it should. Best to use fuel with no ethanol however if ethanol blended fuel is used a fuel stabilizer designed for ethanol will help keep the fuel from absorbing water which is hard on engines.

All in all a very good deal considering the reduced cost of $200 vs a new 455 Rancher.

I’ve only used this once, but it seems to work well. It was rigid enough to keep the saw stable, but light enough to handle easily. The assembly directions were in English, but might as well have been in Chinese.

My father and I were trying to guess where all the washers and bolts were supposed to go. Pretty sure we got it figured out eventually. With a good stable straight edge for the initial cut I think this will saw boards well- I’ve only cut one board as a test so far- but hoping to creating my own posts from dead trees.

Timber Tuff TMS-24 is a well built portable saw mill. It goes together nicely and is very sturdy. All the materials used in the product are very heavy duty down tot he washers used that are thick and made of stainless steel.

Aluminum struts are strong and the unit is solid once it’s put together and tightened down on the chainsaw blade. With the chainsaw it is a heavy piece so be prepared.

Very well designed and sturdy. If there’s any degree of wobble after you’ve assembled it, you’ve probably put the washers in the wrong place. Once I got it all correct, the device was rock solid. One other consideration is your chainsaw and the type of wood you’re milling.

If you’re milling hardwood, a more powerful chainsaw is desirable. My 30cc chainsaw struggled with a 9″ oak trunk even using a new chain, but the resulting boards were of consistent thickness and quite good after I planed them a bit.

Nice to get away from petrol power. but this one has too many design flaws, and just made too cheaply. Its definitely low on power as you’d expect and the blade needs sharpening constantly and adjusting- with tools.

it heats up and you smell the motor burning after about 5 mins use. But the bigger problems are that the oiler is manual, and it leaks constantly when you put the tool away. the manual says “drain oil after every use” that is just far too impractical.

Seconly I had an issue where just out of warranty the internals were failing, it was making a horrible clunking noise of something jamming. Ryobi wouldnt assist me, so I pulled it apart and the “gearbox?” had some screws come loose.

So I locktighted them in and it continued working. Now more recently something has failed in the switch. so time for me to pull it apart again.

Found this offer at a very reduced price so garbed it. Like new but out of the box which is no problem. Started using this right away clearing smaller trees and brush in my woodlot. Works great and I don’t have to yank a cord to start.

The batteries last longer than I thought they would which is great. You need to fill the very nice size chain oil reservoir every other battery change. Much less noise than gas. Have not had a problem with cutting as these may not be as powerful as gas but cut right through.

Have taken down trees up to 10′ and cut through blowdowns up to 16″ with no trouble cutting. This came with one battery and after being impressed with first use of saw I ordered a second battery to give me longer time cutting.

I’m old so by the time two batteries lose their charge I’ve lost mine as well. I can not tell you how long a battery will last as that is determined by what you are cutting.

I had been looking for an inexpensive sawmill for quite some time. I only have occasional use for a sawmill, but they are great to have when you need one. I ended up deciding to buy the Harbor Freight mill.

However, I feared it would be under powered, so I immediately bought a Predator electric start 420 CC engine and installed it instead of the 8 hp pull start engine Harbor Freight provides. The engine change was not quite a swap, but it only required a relatively minor change to the engine mount and a slight enlargement to the cutout where the drive shaft enters the safety enclosure.

The stock pulleys, etc. all fit without changes. I am really glad I went with the bigger engine, and the electric start is a great feature for convenience since I always turn the motor off when I return the carriage for the next cut.

The larger engine has adequate power for this mill even when cutting oak and walnut of maximum diameter for the mill. I quickly found the mill was too short for logs longer than about 8 feet. This is because the engine/blade assembly carriage takes up a surprising amount of the room on the rails.

However, this was readily remedied by buying another pair of rails (a left and a right) and a couple of center supports and adding them to the end of the mill. Harbor Freight’s customer service was a great help in ordering the extra parts and they arrived in about 1 1/2 weeks.

One thing I did that was well worth the effort was to build the mill by lag screwing the rails on two 4×6 treated timbers that were leveled and kept the correct distance apart by a 2×4 treated frame screwed in-between the large timbers.

By doing this I have had zero issues moving the carriage along the entire length of the track. I am also not a big fan of the metal keepers Harbor Freight supplies to arrest the log movement to the left as you saw (looking from behind the carriage).

One has to be very careful to have these keepers high enough to stop the logs natural tendency to move left, but low enough to be beneath the blade. A simple alternative is to use wooden 2×2 construction lumber instead (it fits perfectly in the holders welded into the cross members).

By using wood, you can saw through the keepers and not worry about hitting them. I have also found it useful to pound a wooden stake into the ground at the end of the log to keep it from being able to slide along the cross supports as you saw the log.

One last thing I did was to install an extra cross support midway between two of the supports that come with the mill. This makes it possible to saw logs that are too short (less than about 4 feet) to lie on two of the standard cross supports.

You only need to do this at one place on the mill. All in all, I am very happy with this mill. You can saw logs up to 18″ or so in diameter if they are straight (which many/most logs are not). It takes some practice/experience to figure out the best way to cut a log because the width you can cut is limited by the V-shaped clearance above the blade as well as the travel the blade can be moved up/down.

This is true to some extent for most sawmills, but it is perhaps more important for smaller mills like this one. However, for the price, this is a very functional and useful mill, and I am finding I use it more than I expected.

This mill is not for someone wanting to saw logs commercially, but it is great for someone like me who wants their own mill and will take the time to do the manual operations required.

After waiting 77-days for it to arrive, I’ve now had the saw for 1wk. Sawed some red oak with success. Easy setup, but kicking the dead horse, the instructions are a little lacking. But I was running it bout 3.

5hr after it arrived. Very simple to use. Everything was ready to go out of the box except for the basic assembly & fluids. You’ll need something or someone to lift the gantry. Looking forward to making more than just firewood out of the family’s 35-acre woods.

Will be a great project for my dad, son & I to run in the cooler months. Once you make a couple of cuts, you can get a good rhythm. Make sure you don’t try to mow down the log clamp handle or the vertical stays.

Not at all under-built. Unit is built pretty heavy, no doubt about it. The stock photo on the HF page is definitely out of date — it’s built much more stout than pictured (flannel shirt guy with red muffs).

This is my first Predator engine, and it surprised me how well it’s built. Nice solid engine. Started on the second pull, on choke. Takes 1-qt of oil. Simple. Can’t beat the price, especially with a 20% coupon.

Just under $2. 2k delivered to my shop entrance. Bought a box of 10 blades from Cooks for another $240. So up and running for under $2500. That’s amazing. Customer service responded quickly when I’d ask about the order timing.

And their estimates were accurate. Needs some minor updates, almost all of which I knew about beforehand. – Dust on the track/wheels: you’ll need to make or use something to keep the sawdust from caking on the wheels and track so the saw will stay on-plane.

– Water dripper tube not long enough to get water to blade: I added a little 2″ extension tube and zip-tied the valve to the guide arm so it dripped onto the blade consistently. – Water valve a little flimsy: Zip-tied it to the frame to make it easier/faster to turn on/off.

Then added a 2nd valve — one set at the desired volume and then the 2nd on just on/off – Track lengths not identical resulting in a “bump” at the seam: You’ll have to shim under the middle bunk, but make sure you’re not also taking the bunk out of plane.

Best bet is to just buy a couple sticks of 3″x3″x5/16″ angle iron for a perfect glide with no seam. Make it as long as you want (angle usually comes in 20′, 24′ or 40′ lengths at the mill). – Wet dust cakes up in the exit chute.

You’ll want to clean it out in between logs. – Needs brushes on the blade in the downstream housing to keep sawdust from building up on the outside of the belt (between belt blade).
