When it comes to precision, comfort, design, and durability the Ariens APEX 60-in zero-turn riding mower is top in its class. Comfort is not sacrificed with the high back plush seat with padded armrest along with large diameter padded steering levers.
Large 22 x 12-in rear tires deliver improved traction and an overall smoother ride. This Ariens APEX zero-turn travels up to 8 mph forward and 4 mph in reverse for efficient mowing. Ariens puts a high priority on building low-maintenance machines.
I waited three years to write this about the Apex 60 with Koehler engine to give it a good test run. I have always owned garden tractors before and was told a zero turn would not be a good choice because I live on a hill with a 5% grade.
Honestly it was the best thing I ever purchased ! I mow 3. 5 acres that took me 3 hours before , now under a hour. No issues with mower at all , did all services ( refill port on transaxles is a pain though ).
The pond below my house is very rough and it mows with no problems. It’s fast , smooth and cuts great ! But can not use Gator blades on it , just plugs deck , oem work great though.
While paying close attention to any indication of structural stress and/or overload symptom on the mower’s engine or drive-train (of which there were absolutely none), I was not overly gentle to the mower during its lengthy maiden voyage because I had to determine which of the many problem areas it could reasonably handle on my rough and uneven 6-acres of rural Texas hill country that previously had to be done with a push mower because they are not accessible by my compact 4WD diesel tractor towing a PTO-powered 4-wheel finish mower.
Not only did the Apex 48 send my push mower to a garage sale, but it’s power and extreme maneuverability also allowed me to mow an additional two acres (cluttered with many trees, large rocks and other obstacles) in one-third the time it previously took the tractor making numerous straight line passes from different angles to complete.
The 48-inch (model# 991153) is the smallest width in the APEX line but was the perfect choice for mowing on uneven terrain where greater width of the mowing deck creates very a cumbersome beast that is difficult or impossible to maneuver around and between numerous, closely-spaced obstacles on rough/uneven ground.
The much heavier duty commercial-grade construction of the APEX model along with its large front caster wheels using solid rubber tires (13-inch total diameter) made it the only reasonably-affordable mower that my assessment determined to be sturdy enough to easily take on the challenging areas I mow because those large diameter front caster wheels greatly reduce strain on the frame and drive train by smoothly rolling-over small obstacles and turning much easier on rough or uneven ground that otherwise pose great impedance to smaller wheels.
Additionally, the lift up floor panel makes it much easier to clean off the mower deck and will be a great access advantage when it’s time to change mower belts. Well Done, Ariens!!.
I’ve put mine through the timber mowing trails, cutting everything up to 6 inches or better. Been doing this for 4 years now, haven’t even had to replace the blades. Yes I have sharpened them I believe 4 or 5 times.
I would definitely recommend the ariens. I have never babied this thing and it still does a wonderful job.

IšverstiShow in original languageI have used Cub Cadet for years. Now that I am older I wanted a reliable and easy to use machine in order to keep my lawn looking good. I ordered this model from Tractor Supply and it took several weeks to come in and the whole experience has been nothing but a headache.
After i started it up it started to vibrate violently. I assumed maybe it was supposed to be like this and thought nothing of it until my son convinced me to get it looked at. Once I did the mechanic made it clear that problem was not normal.
Thankfully Tractor Supply was gracious enough to take it back and order a new one for me. Three weeks later I received a new mower. Even this second mower had a problem with it not being able to go in reverse.
Finally I got fed up and sent it to a cub cadet authorized repair shop and they say it will take 3 weeks before they can even look at it. So now after spending a tidy sum on this mower I am stuck without a mower for several weeks.
I hope this is all covered under warranty considering I have only had this for 2 days. But we will see. I am disappointed, this is not the quality of the Cub Cadets that I am used to.
IšverstiShow in original languageI bought this last May and within 3 months I had to take it back because the throttle cable bent inside the housing. It took a few weeks for the part to come but was replaced under warranty.
This spring at the beginning of mowing season, the new throttle cable bent also. This year it took over 2 months for the part to come in. After dropping it off at the dealer, they then lost the part.
I also let them know that the mower constantly surges like it’s running out of gas unless it’s under a heavy load. The service manager didn’t write anything down except “throttle cable” and then proceeded to tell me I just need to clean the carb out.
I reminded him this is the electronic fuel injection model so there is no carb to clean. He let me know that’s “above his skill set to fix. ” However the sales guy told me last year it would be no problem to work on.
I’ve gone through two seasons now with a brand new working mower for only 4 months. If you try to reach cub cadet service line, you wait on the line only never to be able to speak with a human. If you send your info through messenger, they give you the same number for the automated answering service with a case number to reference.
And still can’t speak with a real person. This was my first Cub purchase and will undoubtedly be my last purchase.

The 42-in cutting deck delivers a clean, even cut and you can easily adjust the mowing speed with 7-speed Shift-on-the-Go transmission.
After 27 yrs my Craftsman mower had to be replaced. I liked the look of the this mower as well as its many features, and am counting on this choice to last as long. After a month I am quite satisfied.
This is a well built machine that rides well and cuts evenly without scalping high spots. The deck cleaning attachment ( extra on this model ) is very handy and seems to do a good job when used right after mowing.
The only negative point so far is the rather awkward procedure used to reverse when mowing. Also, the manual provided is the bare minimum information required to maintain a machine of the complexity.
We have had this mower 5 days… that’s how long it took to get it running …. At all! We have not had a chance to cut much grass yet, the mower kept stalling out, sputtering and spewing foul smelling smoke.
A neighbor came over last night, had to spend close to an hour tinkering with the throttle to make it run correctly. Then, it sounded and ran beautifully. I look forward to cutting grass on the weekend.
I got it put together & it started but after a couple minutes it started smoking, sputtered & stalled out. I had to have my handyman who has a lawn care business take it apart & put it back together.
There is a spring on the carburetor that doesn’t attach properly – when it comes loose it doesn’t work properly. He had to rig it up so it doesn’t come loose. This mower also sucks gas like a pig. I have 4 houses to mow.
Should have gone for a few more bucks & got a zero turn mower.

The Cub Cadet ZTR RZT260 features Rev TEK reverse mowing technology, so you can mow while moving in both forward and reverse directions, which helps reduce your time “in the saddle”. And unlike a zero turn mower with traditional lap bar steering, this mower has a cruise control.
I am Very Satisfied with my purchase. To be honest this is my first Zero Turn mower. I am the type of person that if I am going to buy something I am going to do a lot of research before I make the purchase.
I will spend more money on an item if I can justify that the extra cost will result in higher quality parts that I feel will increase the durability, ease of use, and longer life span. Thanks to Cub Cadet and the ZT2 60 I feel that I got a machine that is built with all of those qualities without having to pay the extra cost.
After my research, I knew that I wanted a mower with commercial quality drive transaxles, a commercial quality motor with more power than I need, a foot pedal so I could quickly raise the deck when needed to keep the blades from hitting the ground or anything else that might be too high to get over, and I also wanted the wider rear tires.
The fabricated deck with the reinforced bottom edge, the adjustable seat with a high backrest and arm rests, and being able to mow in reverse are very nice extras that would be on my priority list now, after having used them.
I purchased the lots next to me which is why I needed more than a push mower. I was afraid the 60″ deck might be a little overkill for my mowing needs, which are now just over an acre of some very uneven ground, many trees, and a lot of slopes that are steeper than what is considered acceptable in the owners manual.
I raked the leaves in my lot before I took possession of the new property. The new lots still had all of the leaves still there which have been buried under the snow all winter and then a lot of rain this spring and this mower was able to suck them all up off the ground with the deck height set at 3.
5 inches. I did have to go over some of it a second time, only to better mulch the wet leaves, and I was impressed by how much suction and mulching capability it had. It made the leaves completely disappear so well, that it made think that I would not have had to rake my leaves if I had known how well this mower was going to work.
I really like my Cub Cadet ZT2 60 mower. I am glad that it does not have all of the extra plastic body parts. It is much easier to blow off the grass and dust, and easier to check and change the engine oil.
The Cub Cadet XT1 ST54 features a 54-inch fabricated deck and the powerful Kohler 7000 series engine. LED headlights offer the capability for mowing in low-light conditions. Large tires and a high-back seat provide comfort.
A wide variety of attachments can be added for all-season function.
Overall it appears to be a great machine. It’ fast, cut’s impeccably. The turns are sharp and it’s easy to drive with the hydrostatic transmission. The “reverse turn a key push a button” is not a big deal.
In fact in tight spots mowing forward and backwards was a breeze. With the floor board foot shifter. Similar to a motorcycle is cool. I think it would have received five stars had the seat bolt and nut not fallen off during shipment.
Trying to reach manufacturer now. It’s a custom type bolt so just any bolt won’t replace it. You may need assistance to pull off crate base but otherwise easy to uncrate if you follow instructions. Use a socket set with extension and an adjustable wrench to attach the seat, steering wheel and discharge chute.
The top cover to engine and dash cover slide and snap into place. Best feature in my opinion is the ability to see the actual fuel level on the side.
The 54 inch cut Cub Cadet zero turn mower places many conveniences and performance in the users control. The Kohler engines is famous for it’s performance and is a major reason I chose this zero turn.
But also the cutting deck size and the blade arrangement make this mower work better than my old zero turn. I have a few acres to cut with some trees to circle around and fences to get up close to. The ZT1 handles this fine.
Additionally the tires are larger and frame a little larger than my old 20 horse 50 inch. I can cut with this mower at higher speed and tge ZT1 is almost as maneuverable. This may be due to the “swirl blades” and the four inch greater cutting width.
I have some rough areas to cut and done uneven ground. The larger tires on this model allow for a smoother cut over this terrain. Oh, the foot adjustable mower deck is nice. You raise and lower the deck with your right foot and leg, and dial up the curing height.
Works well! A few things as I compare this ZT1 mower against my older model, I found while maneuverable this mower is on the larger size. It will not go several places the 50 inch smaller frame mower would drive and cut right through.
Also, while safety glasses are a must on mowers, they really are absolutely needed at all times if the blades are engaged. This mower with these blades has great “lift”. Cut grass, gravel, sweet gum burs and so forth fly out very strongly from this mower! Much more than from my old 50 inch! A great mower and I am very happy with the power, performance, speed of mowing, and general operation.
Let me start by saying the ZT1-54 by Cub Cadet has been a beast since I purchased it. It’s fun to use while mowing our 6 acres of uneven pastures and farmhouse yard. So far, so good. As for Cub Cadet, their delivery and customer service could use some work.
I called two separate dealers, who both told me they couldn’t order this particular mower because they were out of stock at the factory. Wrong. There were 1500 units available to ship at the factory, so I ordered one direct.
Once ordered, I probably had to call the company’s 800-number 6-7 times to get any sort of updates, to finalize shipping, and to get them to authorize the use of the lift gate on the delivery truck. I wish I had a forklift to unload it, but sadly I don’t own a factory, so I don’t have a forklift in our garage.
I honestly wish I could post photos here. The mower came in a wood frame crate, not steel and not solid, just pieces of wood stapled and nailed together on a pallet. To make things worse, they stack them on top of each other.
These things weigh hundreds of pounds, so the frame was smashed, and the mower had some damage. Lastly, when I wrote a review on the Cub Cadet website, their internal staff reviewed it and cut half the post so they wouldn’t have a negative sounding review.
How about some honesty and transparency? Overall, I would just appreciate Cub Cadet owning up to this. Will they? I think we all know the answer to that question.
First test run was a little rough riding but once I let the tire pressure out to the recommended pressure it was much better. I had an orange zero turn made by a company that also makes chainsaws. Both 24hp but with this heavy duty deck design it handles thick grass much better and at a faster speed.
The old mower would take two passes at times no matter how slow I went. Wish it had a switch for the lights, why? Also an hour meter for oil changes would be good. The only thing else would maybe be flat free tires on the front, was an issue on old mower, we’ll see on the cub cadet.
Old zero reduced mowing tome from 5-6 to about 4-5 hrs depending on grass height. The cub cadet should be in 3-4 hr range. First test run is fairly thick, lot of rain and it’s handling it great. Turns are much smoother, one of the things I like was the hard rubberish handles vs.
the foam covered type on most the others. Foam doesn’t last long in the Texas sun. Thick grass doesn’t bog down or even kill the engine like the old mower would and like I said both are 24hp. Haven’t evaluated the fuel use, use to use 5 gallons on 3 acres.
Not quite done so not sure of total gallons on cub cadet. Headlights was another thing I liked because there are times in the Texas summer when that as close as you get to pleasant mowing weather.

With its Smart Speed control system, you’ll have precise control and easy maneuvering with its Trim, Tow, and Mow speed ranges. Maximizing comfort, it comes with an 18″ extra-tall seat. It is equipped with an electric PTO and automatic parking brake for ease of operation.
I’ve used this mower for a part-time business going on four years. It’s opened up my opportunities because of the time it saves. It’s nimble, efficient and fast once you get used to operating it. At my age, (63,) I couldn’t take on half the work I have without it.
My less than five stars have more to do with my location, (OR coast,) than the machine itself. The weather is tough on anything used outdoors and the grass is frequently wet. I’ve learned over time to wait until it’s dry to mow.
The Toro TimeCutter 42 zero turn lawn mower features a 42-inch, fabricated deck with a Kohler engine. This model features the MyRIDE suspension system to tackle rough terrain and provide a smooth ride for the operator to go the distance.
It also features SmartSpeed technology that allows the operator to take control of mower speed without sacrificing blade speed. The heavy-duty rubber discharge chute allows you get even closer on edges without damaging the chute.
Armrests and cupholders add comfort and convenience for this model.
Assuming you would like a conclusion for riding a lawn mower for 1.5 acres:
Riding a lawn mower for 1. 5 acres is a great way to get the job done quickly and efficiently. You will be able to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, and you won’t have to worry about tiring yourself out.
