20 Best Potting Soil For Fiddle Leaf Fig (2023 Updated)

It’s expensive, but it’s clearly the best potting soil available. The cheap ones, such as from Home Depot have so much peat moss, they don’t absorb moisture readily. Drying out quickly, those other peat moss laden soils get very stiff, which chokes the roots that need room to grow.

Foxfarm has the perfect balance of moisture absorbency and drainage. It remains soft, so roots can easily stretch into new growth. Also unlike Miracle Grow potting soil, that has artificial fertilizers, plants won’t spike with growth, only to slump in fatigue from too much sudden stimulation.

I needed some good soil for outdoors to till in with the dirt in our yard to have some nutrients in the dirt for a small garden. I never bought this kind before, but I’m glad I did. Combined with the added organic nutrients, It’s got enough of coco and perlite mixed in for a lightweight and spongy texture.

It holds water well for up to 5-7 days on long sunny days before you need to water your plants again. Overall Good soil at a Good $ price compared to others. Roots Organics has a good reputation for that which is really great.

I’m a customer for life. Im glad I found it online which is awesome, because it’s hard to find the soil you are looking for in my town other than Walmart or Lowes, Home Depot.

The 2 complaints I read were stupid fools. This is excellent stuff and make my own when I need 20 or more cubic feet, and this has everything I like in mine. For smaller amounts this is great stuff at a very good price.

I can’t make it cheaper in small amounts. There are only a few brands that rate this good and the others were to expensive so I tried this and now I’m back for more.

For me the best pre-made soil i have ever used. when I started I used fox farm but that dirt always has nats, which isn’t a big deal pretty common with organic soil but roots is like 1 out of 10 has nats fox farm is like every other bag and it burns seedlings.

roots I can put seeds right in it and no problems. been using this soil for about 8 years and the only thing better IMO would be making your own compost based soil.

This is the best potting soil locally available, as far as I know. Miracle Gro soils contain artificial chemical fertilizers, which are unbalanced for plants and soil. Milorganite is a travesty – using the sludge of human wastes collected from the Milwaukee water treatment plant as “organic fertilizer” deceptively leaving the buyer unaware that human feces also contain excreted heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, chemotherapy, parasites, etc.

, which is not what most people want on their food. Happy Frog also has the fungi that enable plant roots to take up nutrients. Just putting fish meal or kelp or worm castings or any other outstanding natural fertilizer on potted plants (which is needful, because the soil doesn’t have all of the microbes and worms, etc.

Happy Frog Potting Soil is my number one go to for most all my potting soil needs with the exception only to cacti/succulent potting medium. When unavailable at my local Farm and Fleet, I am known to drive to the nearest Farm and Fleet where product is available.

When using other standard potting soils, I must amend the mix with additional Pearlite, worm castings, horticulture charcoal, and peat moss to ensure good drainage, soil microbes, etc. Not only are these additional products costly, I have the mixing mess to clean up as well the extra time invested.

With Happy Frog, all I need to do is open the bag and start potting! All the amendments mentioned above are already perfectly blended into the soil as well additional beneficial ingredients. First things first, for all of the reviews complaining about a moldy layer and some gnats resulting from this soil, keep in mind there is manure and compost in this mix. It is going to need to be turned and cared for.

Use a little Neem Oil and dawn dish detergent diluted in a bit of water and you should be fine with the gnats. I would not use this soil for inside plants because of the gnats, however. Great for the garden if you are willing to do the maintenance.

Higher quality soil needs a higher level of attention. We love this soil for our gardening. This brand is hard to find at times so load up on the 2 cu ft bags when you see them on sale for less than $35.

I bought this Burpee Organic Potting Mix to use for new tomato seedling sprouts. I learned it was best to offer fresh nutrient filled soil for new tomatoes because they are heavy feeders. I also started these plants relatively late this year.

As soon as I re-potted my little spindly plants, they took off and are now looking much happier. So far so good, my little plants have grown healthy and are displaying many new blossoms as a signal of luscious fruits soon to follow.

This soil seems to hold water longer as advertised, so less is required. The only reason for 4 not 5 stars is, the soil was more expensive than I would normally buy at the local home center, although it is organic and seems to be high quality.

Looking forward to tasting what should be a beautiful and delicious harvest real soon.

I have had the same 4 African Violet plants for over 8 years. They thrive probably because they live on my family room window seat with the perfect lighting situation for them. The plants are so hardy that Ive split them & given to friends as gifts in a pit with basket look so beautiful for little cost.

I do repot them with new dirt & chips on top so happy to see your product works well.

I used the product for repotting small Phalaenopsis orchids that were given to me as a gift a few years ago. I no longer have a large greenhouse as I live in a retirement community and grow the orchids on a window sill.

I am used to using straight orchid bark that I used to buy in large bags but this mix is sufficient for the task of repotting 3 small orchids.

This was my second year with an annual garden. I’ve been learning about Permaculture for a few years. This was also my second year trying to use soil blocks to start seeds indoors. Last year I used a soil mix from Johnny’s which worked well.

I’ve also experimented making some starter soil myself last year, but as a beginner it became overwhelming. When I heard this was a product of Vermont Compost Company, that gave me a great sense of ease.

I’ve heard of them through a few sources and I appreciate their practices. I always wonder what companies through into compost and how well they process it. When I opened my first bag, I was a bit confused and disappointed.

It was quite a different texture than I was used to. I had come up with an exact measurement of water to add to my previous mix and couldn’t see how this mix would hold together with the same. I watched a few YouTube videos and then got more generous with the water.

I started getting awesome 2″ blocks with ease. I now find this mix very easy to use and I no longer measure the water I add. It seems very forgiving. So far I’ve only used this mix for 2″ blocks (not the mini’s), but the plants all did very well and are now out in the garden.

Since this was a hectic year and we’re fairly new to all of this, we also bought some starts from local farms as backups — these of course came in trays. Now that we’ve transplanted them all, I have to say that I liked the starts in blocks MUCH better.

Some of the trays were root bound and needed to be freed. The soil we got in many of the trays just seemed like an ultralight sponge. The blocks I made with this mix had healthy plants and no root bound issues — they transplanted much quicker.

The fine grain and bits of coconut coir in this potting mix makes it ideal for soil blocking. A YouTube video recommended mixing this Vermont Compost product with Jiffy seed starter, but I have achieved great soil block results with just this product and enough water to make the mix clump well.

The blocks hold together extremely well. You do have to find and remove larger particles like small sticks before making the blocks, but these are mercifully few.

So upset, keep reading how this stuff is the gold standard for soil block use, straight out of the bag. I got mine fresh delivered and prepped an entire flat of 1/2″ blocks (that’s a lot of blocking) and set them on the heatmat to germ when I went to bed.

Within the time of 11pm to 7am it was covered in fine, white, cobwebby MOLD! I’m horrified, I’ve never had this happen with a seed starting mix. So disappointed – hundreds of seeds to waste and putting me a week behind in my starts for the year.

How is one supposed to get heat-lovers like peppers and eggplants going if this stuff molds faster than you can blink?? What a waste of three bags :(.

I decided to try the Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix to cut down on fungus gnats that another brand and type of potting soil introduced to my home a year ago. I can’t tell if it has worked for that yet because I thoroughly washed the old soil off the plants outside when repotting them in this soil but it’s been 2 months and so far, so good.

It took forever to absorb water – I was scared my plants would suffer because it was so dry, but they’ve survived. The leaves on my large bird of paradise plant dried out, especially the edges, but it’s coming back.

It’s also hard to tell when it needs watering, even with a moisture meter, because the soil dries out on top and in patches, but fungus isn’t a problem like it is with some soils. I started rosemary from seed in this soil and both pots are doing great with huge leaves for rosemary.

Thyme, basil and lettuce are also thriving.

I purchased this soil and ended up with mold and nats. The bags were intact when purchased. It is now killing my plants that I am keeping for my son who is out of the country. They were doing so well I had to put them in bigger pots so I purchased your indoor soil.

I am a very experienced gardener and I know how to water plants. Wish I would have read the reviews before purchasing. I’ve been wondering where all the nats have been coming from and why NEW soil would be getting moldy.

I’d add a photo but I just cut all the dead leaves off of the plants. There are NO pro’s to this product unless you want to euthanize your plants.

I really wanted to love this stuff, as it’s readily available and is supposed to work for lots of houseplants. Unfortunately, this stuff is pretty awful. It holds water for far, far too long, and causes root rot.

I have over 25 houseplants and haven’t had an issue with this until I planted one in this soil. Once I watered my plant, the soil stayed damp for TWO MONTHS. My plant is a tough one, but it got brown leaves, and suffered a lot of damage.

I would not recommend, especially if your plant is sensitive to overwatering.

I’ve tried several other brands of organic soil but always come back to this. It’s so expensive but I can get 4 growing seasons out of it with proper mineral supplements and fertilization. With other brands I’ve had insect infestation issues and had to pick out chunks of wood, plastic, even metal and glass.

I’ll stick with this soil from now on. I get beautiful healthy plants that produce an abundance of vegetables.

I got the organic potting soil for my lemon and lime trees because GS said it had really good drainage, and it does! It is a beautiful potting soil. Far better than anything I’ve used from L’s or HD.

Sometimes more popular brand organic soil mixes have mites, or hold too much water, or too much pearlite, but this mix is just gorgeous. Apparently, and it looks like it, has a nice amount of compost.

I am going to repot all of my houseplants into this mix, and my mother who has plants over 50 years old, wants some too. I do think the price is prohibitive to many people, this is a pretty expensive mix.

I was excited to see @smokeyrgreens announce rosy soil and immediately went in on a 4 pack with a friend. I have been sitting on it because I haven’t had the right project for it until this week. Honestly, you just know from the moment you open the bag that it’s quality.

Has a beautiful soft texture when dry, and holds a surprising amount of water while still draining well. I didn’t feel the need to add much/any soil amendments based on the quality of what was already there.

I’ve planted a few plants in rosy soil so far, including some propagations, so I’m excited to see how they settle in. Love the mycorrhizae built into the soil, love the bio-char… I just ultimately cannot find a single thing to dislike, and I’m hard to please.

Clearly a lot of thought went into this. The team should be really proud! Definitely give it a shot.

Rosy first caught my eye because of how environmentally conscious the brand is, and I couldn’t wait to get it. It’s treating my plants extremely well right now and they’ve never looked better. Rosy has easily become my favorite option for soil, and I’m looking forward to getting more in the future.
