20 Best New Balance Hiking Shoes (2023 Updated)

Still breaking them in, but so far so good. I wear a 10-2E and they seem to fit similarly to the other New Balance shoes of the same size. I had been buying the NB 977 and then NB 978 (I preferred the NB 977 for looks) for years and was quite happy with their construction, comfort, and wet resistance.

They have been my everyday, all day shoe of choice for a long time and they held up well. Wearing them with orthotics, a pair would usually last about 10-12 months before my knees informed me it was time to replace them.

Whether because of shipment issues or other factors, the NB 978 have been unavailable for quite some time , unless you wear Size 7. Holabird alerted me that they had a single pair of NB 1400 available and I quickly purchased them.

Thank you, Holabird, for notifying me after I had signed up to be alerted to their availability. With some stores, that’s the last you hear from them, but Holabird came through. As to the NB 1400, I hope the NB 1400s hold up as well as my previous experience with New Balance work/hiking boot.

They fit my feet better and are more comfortable than any other boot, shoe, sneaker. I wear them in all 4 seasons for all purposes. Extremely light and durable. Please buy just enough so that New Balance continues to make them, but not so many that I can’t get a pair when needed.

which is not too often. My old pair has lasted me 2 years and is still ok to wear. of course, I weigh 140 pounds and not 250 to 300 pounds. Does that make me unAmerican? Nyuk. As a physician I can say lose some weight as possible.

I walk several miles daily, take care of 2 small children, and work part-time. I wear my 1300 shoes daily. Great support, when I’m walking and working outside, in the woods and just everyday chores. They are comfortable and great looking.

Hope they never stop making them. I would by 1 of every color they made. HINT. please make them in other colors too. Love these shoes!!.

I have been eagerly awaiting the Hierro v7 for many months and immediately purchased a pair in the blue apricot color way (looks amazing btw) that day it launched. Wearing the shoes around the house felt ok but after using the pair on two back-to-back day hikes, I realize that the toe box is very rigid and unforgiving.

Even with the wide version, my feet are unable to splay properly and I developed blisters on my pinky toe and the outer side of my big toe. At the end of my hike, I took my socks off and could see the mesh imprint of the toe guard fabric on my middle toe.

This never happened to me with other New Balance shoes (1260, 860, Leadville v3) and the main difference I observed is the material of the toe guard which wraps around the toe box. With Hierro v7, the toe guard seems to be made of hardened, laminated plastic instead of flexible rubber-like material.

It’s really disappointing because I was really looking forward to this shoe, I even put off purchasing a new pair for almost a year.

I wear athletic shoes all day, every day as I own my own business and am on my feet all day. I average between 14,000-25,000 steps on any given day. As a result, I buy a great many pairs of shoes and switch between the 15 or so pairs I own.

The New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro trail shoe fits my foot perfectly and is comfortable all day. BUT. my complaint stems from the fabric around the ankle. Within two to three days of wear with these shoes I have worn holes around the puffed fabric on the insides of the shoes.

I know it is from how I walk and given that I put a lot of steps in daily. But I wish they wouldn’t start to look rough so soon. I will continue to buy them however. P. S. I have a narrow foot and the shoe fits me perfect.

If you have a normal to wide foot I would consider getting the wide width shoe. I can’t see how the regular width would be comfortable on a normal foot.

I recently bought size 10. 5 women’s Hierro’s. I have a narrow, 2A heel, and find that New Balance usually fits. I bought these as they had a lower sole than some of the other trail New Balance options, and so I get a better feel for the trail.

I frequently am off trail, bushwhacking, and these offer stability with the Vibram sole. A plus was that they required no break in period. I wore them on a 4. 5 mile bird walk as their first outing, and had happy feet.

I wish they made a water proof version. I am considering buying another pair since my last pair of NB that had Vibram soles lasted for several years. So far I am pleased with the purchase.

The color advertised does not look like the actual shoe once you receive it. The actual brown is rather dull and uninteresting. The shoe is comfortable and hopefully will last 15 years like the last pair.

These shoes were so comfortable as soon as I put them on and the comfort continued for the rest of my day. I would highly recommend them and I plan to buy several pair in the future for walking.

From the first time I tried these shoes on, I loved them. They have the support that I need, plus I think they are very comfortable. Have purchased many pairs since that first one. Now, these shoes are no where to be found.

I keep checking, but alas, no luck. Please do not discontinue these. If you are making a new version, let your customers know.

I’ve had metatarsal pain for years. I had a fitting by a Fleet Feet expert who steered me to New Balance in the proper size. This shoe with a Dr Scholls active insert has relieved my pain. Good metatarsal support.

Perfect sizing.

New Balance Walking Shoes are built to last so buying a pair (used) is good conditions cuts the price and gives you miles of wonderful use. These shoes are the most comfortable pair I have had, and now taking the dog out is not longer a chore.

These shoes seem to run about a half size small, so if you wear a 9.5, order a 10. And unlike most NBs, they’ll require a couple days to break in, but then they’re comfortable and supportive.

I used to buy a lot of NB shoes. No, they weren’t fashionable. No, I wasn’t past middle age. I was young, and super athletic. NB fit because of their widths. In recent years, what with the fabric/cloth based footwear taking over from the leather sneakers, I’ve realized that some other companies offer more comfortable fits than they used to.

And those companies are easier to find in stock in more bricks and mortar locations. So I’ve started wearing those. Recently though I wanted to go back to NB because as I recalled things they provide a better structural support than their competitors.

So I pulled out three pairs of NB, checked the sizes (all the same) and made an online order. Surprisingly, these 669v2 fit very differently and are not the correct size for me. So I’ll be returning them.

Your particular experience as far as fit and comfort will probably differ, so take this comment with the appropriate wisdom. I ranked it 3 stars because the computer system insisted that I not skip this step.

I MUST select a Star Rating. I couldn’t give 5 stars because the shoes don’t fit me and I don’t actually wear them. They may be comfortable. They may be supportive. They may be durable. I don’t know.

I couldn’t give 4 stars because it’s not like it was an almost-amazing product but for a small issue. Yet, there is nothing in particular that I should use as justification to deduct from a 5 star rating.

What would be my critique for improvement in the future? NB should custom make my shoes? Would they even do that? Make all the shoes fit the same way as my other NB shoes? Would that even make sense? So I gave 3 stars.

New Balance used to have a deeper toe box than this, circa 1990s. I damaged my Big toes wearing a handsome pair of NB walkers circa 2008. They were some sort of leather that shrunk as I was walking thru deep, dewy grass.

Both toenails blackened and came off eventually. I turned 70, my brain turned to oatmeal, and I bought this pair of NB walkers claiming to be waterproof. Mr. Right big toe has never been the same, and after about 10-12 miles of walking in Ravenna Park over the course of two weeks, Mr.

right big toe has blackened and is very pressure sensitive. I cannot testify to the waterproof nature of the shoe, as there has been no rain to slog thru. I would need to see NB give 4 mm more vertical space in the toe box to recommend them.

You might say this is an age thing, but COVID willing, you will walk on 70 year old feet too, some day. size=11 4E.

Several years ago, I bought New Balance’s low rise , lightish weight leather hiking boots and have used them in mountains and paths all over the world. Eventually, they started coming apart, and so I bought a new one.

I have very wide feet and very High arches, and am hard to fit. I was so glad to find that essentially the same model is still in production. I am going through the break in process, but am confident that these, like the last ones, will fit like a glove and support.

Have been wearing a version of this New Balance shoe for over 20 yrs. because of the wide size, comfort, and casual style. I had been happy with the way their shoes hold up until the last few years. They seem to wear out faster.

I returned these shoes after 3 mo. of wear. Mostly wore for walks and sometimes to work. The suede part of the shoe on the side at the front split from the seam. This also happened on another older pair of similar shoes that I had for about a year.

But after 3 months? Happy to say that Holabird customer service was very responsive and reimbursed me since I wasn’t confident it wouldn’t happen again. I give Holabird 5 stars but not the shoes. I feel confident that Holabird stands by their products and will buy from them again.

The sneaker is well made, The colors are vibrant and pretty. The top of the sneaker is a soft sneaker and I wanted that for walking on the threadmill. I recently had a total knee replacement and I was walking on the threadmill in a leather sneaker but my toes would gradually move to the top of the sneaker and they would be uncomfortable so I wanted a soft shoe that would give on the top but yet I needed a lot of heal support.

I normally wear a size 9 but I ordered this shoe in a 10. 5. I know the shoe runs a size smaller since made in another country. I had enough room to add a cushion insert and that made the sneaker fit perfectly on my feet.

They support my knee really good to be able to walk to gain strength back in my knee. I am happy with this sneaker. And it makes my feet look younger in the vibrant colors. Look great with jeans.

Just under one month of late summer wear – here’s my thoughts (6’00 @ 220 lbs, usual size 12 D, heel runner, neutral pronation) These Nitrel v4 trail shoes weren’t offered in size 12. 5 and wanting to avoid the usual NB “toe-pop-out-the-top” fabric hole, so I sized up to 13.

The outsole seems dry surface traction worthy but very stiff. Can’t feel much of rocks or road gravel underfoot but again it’s a durable stiff sole, enough flex even with the minimal cushioning of the standard insole liner.

I did slip on wet street pavement coming to an abrupt stop, I expect this might become a bigger problem in colder weather. Hoping the aggressive lugs on sole will offer more traction in snow this winter.

This Nitrel v4 in size 13 for my foot became too wide as the fabric loosened over the past couple weeks of use, particularly in the toe box and above including the lower lace eyelets. Wearing thicker socks with lacing differently only added to discomfort of my left big toe pushing forward, rubs to the leftward front side.

Due to it’s design or sizing, it’s an awkward, sloppy and baggy looking shoe too. Lots of slop from the ankle forward. I won’t waste money on these Nitrel v4 by trying another insole for more cushioning to make up the toe box void.

Looks like I’m stuck this these ill fitting shoes as spares. To top things off, I found NB had lowered the price by $10, three weeks after I bought them.

I am usually a size 6B. The size 6B in these is way too short. So I ordered a size 6. 5B. Actually I ordered 3 pairs of size 6. 5B because I have found that not every shoe, although the same model, by New Balance fits the same.

It was crazy how each pair of size 6. 5B fit a little differently, including the left shoe to fit smaller, (I don’t have this issue with other shoes). One pair, the left ankle of the shoe fit up higher hitting just under my ankle bone, causing discomfort.

Overall, all pairs of shoes were way too wide for my narrow foot. The size 6B too small in length, and the right shoe in the 6. 5B to be too long in length. Too many sizing issues for me. Returned. I’ve had this issue with recent previous NB shoes.

I doubt I’ll be purchasing from New Balance again in the future. Quality control has declined.

I’m not fond of toe box material or cut ( much too loose over top of my foot & puckers upward around the toe box) while there is a strange reflective mirror or shimmering effect going on in the woven material.

Quite distracting. Sizing is ~1/2 size off in length (short) width is smaller than other 4e’s I own. Footbed is a strong point, sturdy support & seems durable. I’ve owned this model earlier & remember as being much better.

I have been running for about 45 years and some version of this shoe has been my go to running shoe for many years now. Whether 476s, 479s or now 481s this has been a great shoe. Whether I run on the street or compete in 8 mile trail runs these shoes are comfortable, tough, durable and give good traction on most surfaces.

I do change out the insole for a running insole I purchase separately for more comfort. I also think they are a great value.

Ive almost had to buy New Balance shoes since. they became available. I wear a super wide in 13 and New Balance is about the only store in town and Sportsmansguide has been selling them for years. I tend to wear shoes til they rot off my feet and have the last two overly worn pair that I use when its muddy out or in the winter when I have to go fetch wood.

they are long past the washing stage and are held together by remnants of nylon. These shoes LAST, are comfortable and flat out fit well. Great product!.

A great shoe, but not as cushioned as I personally need because my overweight. The sole is perfect for outdoors, no so technically suited for road or city walks (for me). I haven’t been able to check its waterproof condition.

But the overall look and feel of the shoe should be well over average for most of the people.

Exceptional comfort and size. When measuring my size, I turned out to be a 1E but obviously went for a 2E, perfect fit.

A trainer and hiking shoe hybrid! Durable and comfortable, waterproof and great grip. Walked on icy paths and felt sturdier than ever before! The base of shoe angles outwards to create a very solid platform.

I’ve never felt so stable on my feet!.

I bought this for my son who has wide feet. We sized down 1 size because it fit better. Maybe wide shoes have more room so we didn’t need his usual size. It’s hard to find running shoes that are lightweight and comfy and in wide sizes so I was happy to find this one in a brand name I trust.

Unfortunately, he’s wearing a hole at the side after 1 week of wear, where his foot is the widest. He’s a very active teenager. Probably can’t fault the shoe. Mesh fabric keeps the shoe lightweight so it’s a trade-off I guess.

Like most people. I think I have tried every brand out there. I can’t spend $130+ on shoes that will just wear out in 2-3 months. I had to break away from Hoka’s and Saucony’s. wasn’t convinced with New Balance at first years ago but I always came back to them when they had sales/deals.

They are consistently dependable and comfortable to me. I’m also older so. I’ll take comfort over flashiness. Right out of the box – I checked the insert soles. aligned correctly and the comfort was instantaneous.

(Saucony’s quality has been so poor the late 8 years. and I had a habit of checking soles since I noticed the Saucony’s were failing) These shoes are not narrow but I can see someone with narrow feet not having a relaxed snug fit.

just double up on socks. I have used these shoes to run daily (2-4 miles). and almost a week in. I bought another pair. Like most of my New Balance shoes. I will retire them for yard work but when I see the tread/usuage of them.

I know I got a deal.

I do allot of walking, used to call it power walking, and these 978’s are the best shoe I’ve ever worn for that purpose. The first thing I noticed was the absolutely GREAT support! The second was the overall comfort, and general performance, of the shoe.

The intended use was for the rainy and snowy days, but the 978’s immediately became my every day, every season shoe. After reading some reviews I was concerned about the fit. I’ve worn New Balance for about 20 years and the size 12D has always been a perfect fit.

Since I’ve always had good luck with the New Balance in size 12 D, I ordered the 978 in 12D and waited to see how they’d fit. When I received my 978’s, I immediately put them on, and what a relief, they fit perfectly! And I mean PERFECTLY.

I could continue, but on the overall, I found all aspects of the 978 to be completely satisfying, so I’ll quit here. Needless to say that I am very pleased with the New Balance 978 and highly recommend them.

So this is my first time wearing hiking boots and I got to say it’s pretty comfortable. Always worn trail runners and after my last challenging hike, my ankles were pretty sore. A hiking buddy recommended that I upgraded to hiking boots.

Since I’ve been used to wearing trail runners from NB and loved them, I decided to try out their hiking boots. Went online, picked out the style I like and read the reviews. Went with the 978 which is the mid cut to protect my ankles.

Some reviews stating that it runs small and recommend ordering 2 sizes up which was accurate. I took it on a 10 mile hike with rocky terrain and it held up nicely. Also, my feet didn’t feel as beat up compared to trail runners.

I am disabled walk with a king the shoes last me three to four months and then the souls start peeling off. I would have to take to a shoe repair shop and have the souls reattach on multiple occasions usually within two to three weeks of each repair until they are no longer wearable.

I have were these for over 10 years and consistently by two pairs a year probably just what New Balance wants but not that I Social Security does not make you rich and they have certainly been a big budget of everything I need to keep me funtionable.

If disabled man can wear these out twice a year a brand-new pair something needs to be done with it to last longer like stitching the sole to the shoe itself I believe I’ve purchased more than my fair share and am in dire need of a shoe that will last all year long.

My shoe store that sells me these, is hold his arms up and frustration for my cause. You should last longer for a disabled person for the lack of abuse that I give it.

I’m wearing right now a pair of New Balance shoes that I bought in 2019. They’re beautiful, shaped beautifully with the wider curved front part of the shoe, a soft gray with pink soles. Wonderful! The pair I just bought can’t measure up in any way to the pair on my feet right now.

You have dumbed down your product. I’ve been wearing New Balance since 1980. All of the years since 1980 I have loved and bought over and over New Balance shoes. Now, I think I need to find a different athletic shoe company.

New Balance stood out because they looked beautiful on the foot. No more. They now look ugly just like the Pumas, Reeboks, Nikes, and all the rest. By the way, can’t you make a plain white shoe? Why do they have to be junked up with color stripes and other junk? Just plain white, please.

I have logged 300 miles in these since October 1st, running and hiking on the trails and hills around Phoenix. The shoe has been mostly comfortable (see below!) and very durable. The upper has held up great, although the tops of the heel counters, right at the Achilles, got holes around the 175 mile mark and worsened quite a bit over time.

The exposed plastic of the heel counter is now rubbing my Achilles too much to even use these as yardwork shoes now that I’ve reached my mileage limit with them. Cushioning was excellent and the outsole had really good grip on solid rock surfaces (even now) and loose sand/dirt until the toe/forefoot lugs wore away too much.

The problem is with the inexplicable decision to leave an exposed foam area on the bottom of the outsole, directly under the heel. I suppose it was to save a fraction of a gram on weight, but whenever I was on rockier trails, I always seemed to have a pointy rock stab my heel in that exposed foam spot.

The foam in the heel is thick, and I wouldn’t say it hurt, but it definitely got my attention. In the attached pictures, you can see how torn up and indented the exposed foam is after all those encounters with the pointy stuff.

If you run on smooth stuff, you might never notice this issue. Overall, I would enthusiastically recommend these shoes if the exposed spot under the heel was not there. As it is, I would only recommend them for people who use them on smoother surfaces.

I liked everything else about the shoe so much that I might get another pair, but I have to check some other options for better protection of the bottom of my foot first.

I was already a fan of the regular More — starting with V1 — which has slowly become my go to shoe for all distances. (And prior to migrating to the More, I primarily wore other shoe brands. ) So I was intrigued to learn that a trail shoe version had been released.

First, the fit is exactly what I like: fits closely through the heel and mid-sole for support, with a very wide toe box so my toes can spread out naturally. (The fit is similar to my NB 1260v7, which I don’t care to run in, but which are the best fitting shoes I have.

) Second, while it’s low to the ground like other trail shoes, it feels extremely cushioned even when walking on hard surfaces. I find most trail shoes feel very hard, like there’s no cushioning as it’s expected to come from the ground.

These are like walking and running on pillows, while still being low and stable. While I haven’t tried them in slick conditions, they’ve been great so far for trail running. I’ve also gotten some compliments on how they look (I’ve been wearing the Habanero color).

I love these so much, I bought an extra pair just for walking around in –they’re THAT comfortable. With regard to size, they’re true to size FOR RUNNING SHOES — meaning if you wear a size 9 in most running shoes, the size 9s should fit.

However, I find running shoe sizes to be a lot smaller than street shoes; e. g. , I wear a WOMEN’s 8. 5 – 9 street shoes, but a MEN’S 8. 5 – 9 running shoe (generally a women’s 8. 5 would be a men’s 7).

Great for wiiiiide feet! And walking on concrete floors for 10 hour shifts. Ordered 7. 5 , 2E. Not only is the toebox sufficiently wide, but high enough so the tops of my toes don’t rub against them (surprising how many shoes aren’t high enough).

Wish the toebox was a bit more foot-shaped, but these aren’t as pointy as many are. In addition, these are wide at the midsole. A little loose at the heel, but not enough to matter. The heel to toe drop is not too much, my toes don’t slide forward and jam together.

Would prefer a little more cushion, and the insoles are not removable, but can fit a thin insole on top of the original. I didn’t notice any arch support, which is ok for me. The laces are round, and a little stiff, but double knotted, they stayed tied.

My only real issue is the tongue. It’s longer than normal and thick at the top, but not padded. The thickness is from the extra fabric of the tongue where they sewed it. I wear no-show socks, so the tongue chafed the skin at the top of my ankles.

A bit heavy, and a thick sole, but no foot pain, or foot/leg fatigue. Happy that they came in the dark grey (hate the neon colors of many shoes), and the suede should keep them from wearing out too quickly.

As someone who has picky feet, these are very good, and almost worth the 5th star.

I bought this same shoe a year ago hoping it was a comfortable choice for a golf shoe. The HUGE problem with any conventional golf shoe I’ve purchased is that halfway through the golf season the toe area of the insert bunches up (from the heavy torque generated in our feet when the club is swung).

This is the only shoe that keeps its shape and provides fantastic foot comfort all season long (that’s over a hundred rounds folks). It is by far the most durable and comfortable “golf” shoe I have ever owned.

That’s why I bought this new second pair to wear during the 2020 season. You can’t go wrong with this product.

These are my everyday wear walking and hiking shoes. I have white tennis shoes, black “going out to dinner” shoes, and these are my brown daily wear shoes. They coordinate well with various colored pants.

I’m not too wild about the brown and orange shoelaces and I find they come undone easily, but they are acceptable. These shoes do size a bit smaller than their “normal” sizing. I wear 9-1/2 4E and was suggested to increase the size to 10 4E.

I believe that is an issue because New Balance is well known and respected for its “perfect fit”, and I would like you to see to it to fix the sizing on these shoes.

First I love the fact that i can order wide width. It’s my third pair of summit unknowns. The perfect ratio of weight and absorption. I run in them for my ultramarathon every year. No blister, no black toe, no injurie every time.

It’s true to size. Order 12 in most of my running shoes. To add a little bit of fun, mens now having purple blueish and turquoise color.

First of all, I really love how comfortable the shoe is, there’s plenty of cushion! My frustration is that I do feel that it’s a tad bit short length wise. I always feel my toes scrunch slightly to the front of the shoe walking/running.

Which over time wearing them, my toes go a little numb. Constantly needing the readjust my foot back is aggravating. Wondering if this is because the shoe is new. hopefully it gets better.

V3 is awesome. You should however go for the wide version or a size up. Good shoe. Nice toes protection. Good grip.

Im a six in shoes but 7 in trainers. 7 fits great. Made from a neoprene fabric and very bright. Good grips. Would be able to run in them but would rather keep them for best for now. Will put in arch supports if walking far as my ankles sloping in a bit but i do have flat feet.

Awesome colour, very comfortable. Great for outdoor walking or something casual when out and about. Only thing I will recommend is get half a size up our normal size.

Beauts looking runners. But very narrow in the mid foot. Unwearable for me and I have other pairs of New Balance in the same size.

The 993 is the ultimate shoe, the support you need, slightly roomier toebox for the “slightly wide but not wide enough for EE” feet out there. The quality we’ve come to expect from New Balance’s MiUS line, coupled with that classic style we love.

The pig suede is soft and buttery, per usual, making you want to touch it every time you put them on. The 993 has been a favorite of mine, and this Christmas I got a fresh pair for my dad in size 15EE (that’s a 15 wide for the uninitiated).

He needed stability to prevent over pronating, width that would accommodate his foot, all day comfort that would accommodate his on the go lifestyle, often being on his feet for 8+ hours (despite being retired, go figure).

He also travels often, and as we know, comfortable shoes are a must when globetrotting. These checked all the boxes, he loves them, he looks great in them, and he’s worn them for 3 weeks straight with nothing but rave reviews to report back.

The 993 is just *his* shoe, which should be unsurprising considering how many people have it at the top of their 99x list. but it reminds me that the 993 is for all of us. It’s (much like Wu Tang) for the children, for the homies, for the ladies in our lives, and for the parents that raised us up.

The 993 is for everybody, the 993 is (also much like Wu Tang). forever.

I talked with a vendor at a NB store and asked about the sole of the 993 shoes. I have a 990 pair and the toe box bends about 20-30 degrees. One criteria I had for a new pair of shoes is that the soles be as stiff or stiffer than the 990.

He had no 993’s in the store, but I asked the salesman if the 993’s were just as stiff as the 990. He suggested the 99x series of shoes had the same stiffness in the sole. So, I ordered them online. They fit perfectly.

The toe box was deep and then I remembered to take off the shoes and bend the toe box. Unfortunately, the toe box bent all the way back to the heel with little pressure. I have neuropathy and need a stiff sole to avoid over extending my toes when I walk or crouch down.

I sent them back the same day I received them, and surprise. about one hour later, I was informed via e-mail by PayPal that NB had authorized reimbursement! I’d buy NB again if I can find another stiff sole.

Please make more sizes available!!! I have been waiting to buy a black pair but no 10 2E available. The whole reason I love New Balance is because they make shoes that fit me, but these days they are not producing my sizes.

Please New Balance, this is a very popular shoe. Please start making all sizes available again. Same goes for the 991, would love to buy a pair of those as well. Where is the Wide (2E) option???? At least give us an update instead of just saying you have no information etc.

will it be months/years before I can purchase these??? Is there a plan to produce more sizes in the works?? To those of you who can find your size, I cant say enough good things about this shoe and I highly recommend.

I am a 10 1/2 in most other shoes (11 in Nike/Reebok because they are so skinny). but for this model I am a 10 2E.
