20 Best Leather Leashes For Dogs (2023 Updated)

Bought this for my 8 month old aussiedoodle who has broken at least two leashes. Took him to training class where he tried to pull with all him might to play with the other dogs. The leash held him back wonderfully.

My only suggestion is that I miss having a second handle closer to the dog so I can have more control. 6 feet is kind of long in some situations. Overall, love the leash!.

Our lab is now 14 weeks old and starting his basic obedience training and this leash was perfect for that purpose. Not as heavy as he will transition to with the 1 inch wide leash (this one is narrower than 1 inch) as he grows into adulthood.

There is nothing like the feel of a well conditioned and broken in leather leash. My wife and I still have two 38-year-old 6-foot 7/8″ wide leather leashes that are on the heavy side, but are both still in service.

We had rope leashes for our last two Golden Retrievers but I had to wear gloves walking them as they would frequently lunge at squirrels and rabbits. After memories of those rope burns I swore for our next dog I would return to a leather leash.

We just acquired our sixth Golden Retriever puppy and decided to spoil him–and ourselves–a bit with several new leashes. Because our current pup comes from a lineage of hunting and working dogs we settled on the Standard Obedience Leash line primarily for the quality and feel of the latigo leather with a very reasonable weight.

We have a 4-foot 1/2-inch wide Standard Obedience dedicated for general training purposes. For everything else we have a 4-foot 3/4″wide, a 5-foot 3/4″ wide and a 6-foot 3/4″ wide — all Standard Obedience Leashes — that we can select from depending on where we’re going and what we’re doing with our pup.

These are solid quality, functional leashes and very affordable. I’m not the biggest fan of biothane leashes but we really like the 4-foot Super Grip Biothane Leash for wet/damp conditions and to have on hand as a general backup leash.

But if I could only have one leash, I’d have to go with leather.

I ordered one of these to test out a 3’ leash before committing to another one. Paid a little more than what I could find elsewhere because of the implied quality of a professional brand. The first leash that came validated my decision.

I ordered a second one as I was satisfied with the first one and the build quality is way worse than what I originally got. Pockmarks in the finish, stitching is off, and there is a notable thin spot in the middle of the leash.

I have two dogs a German Shepherd/Mastiff and a Lab and now have to be careful to use the weaker leash with the lab. Really frustrating as I know the quality should be there.

This is my second one that I have purchased from here. This time I ordered a wider one. These leashes are absolutely the best. I have a very large GSD who is my service dog and we do tracking. These leashes take one **** of a beating with me.

Lol, through swamps, snow, sand, salt, all types of weather we go through. My first leash I bought over 3 years ago and it’s in great shape. I highly recommend giving these leather leashes a try! Totally worth every penny!.

Pro: perfect length for quick control without grabbing a bunch of leash. For reference, I have a 100# GSD so leather is my go to leash. Con: only 3/4 of an inch wide, handle edging are not rounded so a little rough on the hand and getting use to.

Braided section has a rough side out side. Doesn’t affect the function but a magnet for dog hair.

Unfortunately my 7 month GSH chewed it to pieces within 10 minutes of having it on. Needed for training purposes. He only chews his bones. Never shoes or anything else. But I placed on him, cooked dinner and checked him.

It was destroyed. Trainor said leave leash on in home. Wanted a short leash to grab easily and for him not to step on. Unfortunately this did not work at all for us.

Daisy is a 50 pound, 18 month old puppy. She is very well behaved but. I can’t seem to get her to walk without dragging me along. She has a massive chest and I’m just no match for her. So I thought I’d try the short leash.

We’re still working on it but there already is improvement. For the actual product: Nice, braided leather. Not too heavy or too light. The braiding gives it more strength so it should last through a lot of walks.

The appearance is very attractive. I’m very happy with the leash and look forward to using it for many years.

Purchased this product for general use (walks, training). Based on the description “thick” leather leads, photos showing ample stitching with bolts, it appeared promising. Buyer BEWARE, once in your hands you can feel the inferior “leather” material.

Light, sharp edges, feels more like reinforced paper rather than new quality leather. Would not recommend anyone expecting a real leather feel with durability to buy this product. Disappointed. Donating these inferior leads.

I got the Jaeger Lead for use with my service dog. She’s a 65 lb lab and it is a pain to maneuver together holding her leash, especially if I need to carry or do anything else. The leather is high quality and the construction is excellent.

It deserves 5 stars, but it falls short of perfect to me for 2 reasons. First, I wish it had one more ring, close to the end, so you can form a handle for times when you don’t want to wear the lead. When we’re in the woods, and she could use a little more slack in the lead, it could be helpful to have that shorter handle loop.

Second, from all of the pictures and descriptions I could find, I believed the lead to be one continuous piece of leather. It isn’t. It’s two pieces, stitched and riveted together at the middle where the d ring is located.

A friend had given me a different leash that ended up falling apart at the seam between two pieces of leather, so the single piece construction appearance was a big draw to me. It is a much higher quality of craftsmanship, so I have full confidence that it will perform well and last, but I wish that description or the pictures would have been clearer.

It has been a great tool for me, it looks great, and I’m happy that it was made in the USA!.

The Leather Jaeger Lead is a fine quality leash. The snaps at either end attach to one of three ‘D’ rings or a floating ‘O’ ring. One small issue is that in use, when snapping to the ‘D’ rings, the orientation of the ‘D’ rings turn the resulting loops wrong-side-out.

Not a functional problem, but perhaps an aesthetic oversight. The ‘D’ rings should be mounted facing the other way around. I might also add another ‘D’ ring closer to a snap end to create a smaller loop handle.

Would love to see this leash offered in a smaller scale, maybe 1/2″ wide with lighter weight hardware for smaller dogs. Overall a great leash, but not quite perfect.

I work at an outdoor doggie daycare facility and these slips have been a game changer for me. The heather holds up well in the wet and dirt very well, gives great grip, harder for a dog to chew through and the leather stays soft.

My only complaint is that the leather stopper gets loose and becomes useless but I don’t really need it to stay one size so it’s not the end of the world for my use. I can’t go back to nylon slips after using these.

Bought online thru TSC for our Labmaraner. So far it has held together quite well. She is a strong dog and tries her best to pull ahead while walking, but this (along with the collar) has made it easy for us to maintain control on her strength as she realizes she cannot tear it as she did the last two leashes we purchased that were made from other materials.

Very flexible and well made. It is excellent for training class especially for heeling exercises. I have a small Norwich Terrier but it would also work great with larger dogs. I am very pleased with this product especially that it is leather, pliable and just the right width.

I love these leashes. I originally bought one for my 7 year old husky that I’d adopted and after seeing how well it worked, I decided to purchase one for my border collie who’s 9 months and has a lot of puppy energy.

The leashes are very comfortable to hold and gives you a lot of control. Interestingly enough because the pull on the leash is so distinct to each dog, I can tell which leash belongs to which dog. For example I had accidentally grabbed Logan’s leash instead of Bear’s leash one night when I was walking Bear(the border collie) and within a few minutes into the walk I knew it was the wrong leash just by the way the leather responded when he pulled.

Was leary of buying a halter with a snap since before, all of them had been so hard to unclip but this one is so easy. Was leary of having her head slip through with her leg but it seems easy for her.

Love the color yellow So cool! The leash is short but it works great for me since I have to take her for a walk using an electric chair as I am disabled. So leash does not have to keep being rolled up so as not to get under the wheels.

I barely got the right size though. It is just loose enough. Should have gotten a medium for when she gains weight. Mia culpa. Well this way I can keep her on a diet. :-).

I’ve had this leash for only a couple of months now, but it seems to be a good leash and is holding up well. It is a good length for my dog and me since I’m a little on the short side and so is she! I got the pink since it matches the dog’s floral patterned collar and it is a nice color of pink.

My other dog’s leather leash is still holding up, but when it finally wears out, I will probably replace it with one from this company.

We bought for our new puppy. She’s only a few pounds, if that, and it is good size for her. Did not want to use our old leashes on her right now. The Buckle/clip is not obnoxiously large next to her tiny face.

I thought it might be too short but it’s really not. It’s a nice option for a puppy!.

While this leash is thinner than what I was looking for, it is nicely made and works well for my needs. I like the rolled leather handle and that the clip isn’t too heavy for my medium sized dog. I’d love for there to be a thicker option- basically this leash doubled with two finished sides rather than a front and back.

Still, I see no reason for this leash not to hold up well for many years and I would have no concern using it for any size dog including Mastiffs, German Shepards, ect.

I bought this leash for my small to medium sized dog because it matches the collar I had bought her previously. The leather quality is very good and the collar match is exact. It’s taking some time to break in and that’s fine.

The leash itself is longer than I expected it to be, which is also fine. The only issue I have it the heavy brass clasp. I bought this leash specifically to match the leather collar, also in brass, but the clasp is way too heavy for this small of a dog, making it very heavy when it attaches to her harness.

This pulls everything to one side or the other on her. I keep having to straighten everything. Slightly annoying.

Bought this leash five years ago, soon after adopting my dog. It’s always felt great in my hand and is only improving with age. It gets softer, but stays strong. I’m pretty sure it will last as long as my dog will.

I would buy another in a heartbeat, except that I don’t need to yet. I have a friend with a new puppy and plan to gift him one. The leash and hardware are substantial. I would not recommend for a dog less than about 30 pounds, the clip would probably be too heavy.

For anyone with a larger dog this is definitely a plus.

I bought this hands free leash on Amazon and happy with it, because of high quality material and construction. After a month of use I have only one issue – when use over the shoulder the face side twists at mid connection.

It seems to me that the middle brass loop should be in opposite side of the leash. With this change the face side to be straight and not twisted when use over the shoulder.

I purchased this leash for a 100lb dog. My pup is very well mannered and walks great without a leash, however because of leash laws, he must remain on a leash while in public. I wanted something strong, thin and minimal.

The leather is good quality, and the clip is strong and secure. The 3/8 width is about as thick as an adult little finger. A similar leash was selling for $40 at the store. Nothing bad to say.

If feels great. It is easy to manage my dog with this leash. I feel very secure walking my dog with this leash. The leather is lovely and has only gotten more enjoyable with time. No oiling was necessary.

I feel it is a bit longer than 6′ which is a plus for me as it gives my pup a bit more freedom.

Reading the other reviews from this leash make me wonder if I’m overly picky. I was expecting something more but is a Tory brand leash. The leather is okay but not amazing. I really wanted a leash that felt good in my hand when I’m practicing obedience with my dog, so I sent it back.

And maybe we horse people are a bit spoiled with it comes to nice leather. Granted, this leash is nicer than you will find at your big box pet store, but I just didn’t feel like it was worth the price.

I probably should have started my search at a dog training specific company.

The box clearly states that this fan uses 3 “candelabra” bulbs, and the image shows the fan using candelabra (E12) base bulbs. I purchased a package of these bulbs and they do NOT fit. The fan uses a typical E26 base bulb, however, the decorative glass jars do not support a typical light bulb (my local Home Depot has no LED bulbs that can fit this fan).

It appears that when they updated this fan from E12 (Candelabra) to E26 (standard base), they did not change the decorative glass jars accordingly to match the new bulb type. So this makes two problems entirely caused by the (incompetent?) manufacturer.

1. Don’t sell products with incorrect information on the box. Seriously, if you are selling a light fixture, the least that a consumer can expect is that the packaging doesn’t lie about what bulbs are used in the fixture.

2. Don’t sell a product that requires some obscure type of LED light bulb without making this clear on the packaging. It is pretty bad that I can’t get an LED bulb to fit this fan out of a very large selection at my local Home Depot store.

3 (bonus). Aside from the light bulb, the fan seems to be pretty good quality with the exception of the downrod. The threads on a ~1″ diameter piece of metal shouldn’t strip out as I am threading it in finger-tight.

I have emailed Hunter Fan company with this complaint. Hopefully they are willing to make an effort to correct their error. I see from the other reviewers that I am not the only one who encountered this problem.

YIKES. I can’t believe I spent over $200 on this. What a disappointment. The ceiling fan is supposed to come with bulbs; it doesn’t. FYI it takes E24 (standard base) 40 watt tapered/chandelier-style bulbs.

You might have a time finding them, and they aren’t inexpensive either! Standard bulbs won’t fit inside the mason jar sconce. (And don’t buy E12 base ones — they’re too small. I see in the replies here even Home Depot got it wrong when asked!) None of the blades have grommets installed; you have individually install each and every one (3 per blade; 4 blades total).

The height of the fan (nearly 19”!) is NOT adjustable / changeable AT ALL despite what the description says. The housing/mounting bracket are fixed and cannot be changed. Did Home Depot screw up and put the wrong description with this product? Because basically everything in the specs here is incorrect.

Do not recommend at all. For the price point, you should be getting a much better unit. Spend your money elsewhere.

LOVE my fan! My dad thought I was crazy based on the size of my room and the size I picked for the fan, I couldn’t find something I loved in a smaller size, so I bought this and have no regrets. Its beautiful.

Both blade colour choices were great even. I installed LED light bulbs. Bulbs DO NOT come with this item even though the listing shows they do. I would have gave it 5 stars if it was listed proper and I didn’t have to go shopping for the proper size bulb after installation.

This is a thick leather leash suitable for a large dog. I would have given it 5 stars but Petco didn’t indicate the width of this leash. I ordered it online hoping it would work for my 6lb. dog. It’s way too thick for a small or medium dog.

Accurate description. There is 1 small flaw. a space between the numbers of my phone number. Only between the 2nd and 3rd digit of my area code. Locals would figure it out if my puppy needed help getting home.

I bought this collar and lead to replace my puppy’s nylon collar and lead. I’ve purchased rolled leather collars and leads before but not this make. The tan colour is lovely, although a little darker than I expected and the brass tags really set it off against my puppy’s black and tan colouring.

I’m hoping it will be made to last as the quality and appearance certainly seems that way and the lead was quite pricey but well worth it so far. I would definitely recommend these products.

Beautiful soft lead. Useful metal ring on the handle which means it’s easy to clip around you or shorten on the dog. Very good finish and quality. I wish the metal parts were chrome rather than gold but I can live with the ‘bling’!.

This collar and lead is superior to anything else you can buy for your beloved dog. The quality of the leather and craftsmanship is truly worth the money, i cannot tell you how many compliments we’ve received on this collar and lead over the last 6 years but it’s a lot.

Especially on the brass plate ID tag that is fixed across the leather collar. No dangly tags here! Not only is the leather the perfect thickness, width, colour and weight but the brass hardware is also top quality and not too heavy for our Hungarian Vizsla.

Our dog hunts, swims, climbs and like to get muddy and so far this collar has stood the test of time. 6 years and 1 month to be precise! We bought the set and an extra lead when our Vizsla turned 1. Over the years the leather has softened and aged but remained strong and it’s developed a unique patina like a fine oak table.

I’ve been looking for a 2 metre lead for a very long time. I’ve got a ruufwear 1 but the clasp is so big and heavy my dog hates it when she has to change sides so I have to stop and alter it every time.

I saw this 1 and thought I’d take a chance as it looked long in photo ( would be could if orvis could put length in item info). Anyway it paid off lead is 2 metre long and leather which is a bonus. The lead is strong but not wide which makes it easy to wrap round hand when you need it to be shorter.

The clasp is strong but not heavy and best of all my dogs not getting hit on head by heavy clasp so I don’t have to stop and adjust all the time. It’s the best lead I’ve ever had. I would have liked a choice of colours but at the end of the day it does what I need it to and it’s strong enough for my American bulldog.

Great quality product, fits well, and looks great as well. I was expecting the collar and leash as opposed to just the collar though. The description says collar and leash and then when you select collar, the other option is “leash only”.

The collar option doesn’t say “collar only. ” Should’ve looked closer, I guess. Otherwise it’s nice, just a little disappointed in that.

I love this leash. I have many of them. I bought one initially to use when training one of my dogs because it is light and doesn’t pull down on the collar. It is ideal for that. I have 5 dogs, Australian Shepherds and Border Collies so my dogs range from 40-65 pounds.

I leave several in my car all the time. It isn’t unusual for me to have them all with me at once because everyone likes to ‘go for a ride’ and you just never know when you might have to take them out of the car.

Since these aren’t typical bulky leashes it is easy to find a spot to tuck them away. They are perfect for my needs. If you have a very large dog that pulls hard, you will might want something more substantial but my 65 pound Aussie is terrible at leash walking and the leash holds up just fine to her tugging.

(She came to me as a rescue about 7 years ago and she just just couldn’t pass ‘puppy school’ leash walking – she’s 12 and rarely needs a leash so I’ve given up ) The leashes are well made and attractive.

I really like the look of braiding. I bought my first one about 8 years ago and it is still soft and supple. The leather hasn’t stiffened and the leash looks great. One of my dogs likes to ‘go visiting’ other people when we go to the lake so I usually keep her leashed.

I do use a little leather conditioner now and then on any leash that has gotten really wet several times. You can’t go wrong with this leash. I highly recommend it to anyone that is taking a dog to basic obedience classes or to anyone who has an even semi well behaved 4 footed furry friend.

This is a fabulous leash. Once used and oiled, it feels amazing in the hands and is virtually indestructible. Use it for a few weeks to open the pores of the leather, then put it in a 1-gallon ziplock bag with a couple of tablespoons of pure neatsfoot oil (not compound) and work it around to coat every surface.

Remove the leash, hang in a sunny spot for a day, then wipe off the excess. Voila! A soft, smooth lead that feels like it’s been used for years, and is beautiful to boot. I have several of these, the oldest is nearly 30 years old, and they all look great and are used daily.

Thank you for making a good product that lasts! Finding quality latigo leashes is getting difficult to do, especially in a full 6′ length and 1″ width. I oil mine once a year or so as above, and they last forever.

My go to leash for every walkie. It is strong enough to support my body being the anchor on a 95 lb hound who although normally complacent will lunge and try to break free on a scent. My walking buddy was getting nylon burns and I had to recommend these strong yet supple leather leashes.
