20 Best Leather Dye For Furniture (2023 Updated)

The black leather driver’s seat in my 31-year-old Mercedes was beginning to show its age, letting down the overall appearance of the car. Clyde’s to the rescue! Twenty minutes or so had it back to almost-new just as many YouTube clips demonstrated.

But where the Clyde’s leather balm really shined was on the leather documents pouch that lives in the glove box. It had multiple white crow’s feet and was looking quite shabby. But again, the Clyde’s leather balm brought it back to near-new.

But the thing that really surprised me was not actually even leather. There is a matt-black painted metal strip trim on the trunk lid that had weathered towards a splotchy off-grey. Figuring I had little to lose, I applied some balm to the trim strip.

Amazingly, the balm worked into the paint surface and produced a sparkling and uniform black! Next is my winter’s day project of restoring eight 45-year-old black leather high-back dining chairs.

I ordered the dark brown. It was a tad darker than the furniture I needed to touch up. However, I don’t think I could’ve found it better elsewhere. My dog licked all the brown off of where your leg goes on a recliner.

Of course, they don’t lick where it is convenient, maybe in the corner or so. She did it smack dab in the middle!! I bought the kit. The stain goes a long way, if you don’t have much to cover. I had maybe the size of a 8 inch baking pan.

The kit has a tiny bottle of the cleaner and the conditioner a bit more. Make sure to get all the shiny wax looking finish off of the leather. It will not soak in. I got it off really well, but was having problems wiping it all off and not soaking in like it should.

So, I used a sponge and dabbed the color all over and then waited a couple of minutes and then wiped it off. I continued to do that until I got the right coverage without creating a demarcation on the leather.

I actually did it right the first time. It was really easy, much easier than anticipated.

This product does what it supposed to do. My husbands favorite leather chair had becomed ruined where his head hits the back of the chair. Maybe scalp oil? It is a 12 year old chair and he sits in the same position all the time.

And he is baldish. The handrest also had some ruined leather but not as bad. I scrubbed the leather with murphy’s oil soap and it took of the entire finish leaving a pretty unsightly area. After letting it dry for several days, I dabbed the dye stain on – the dark brown matched perfectly, I had to put excess on in some areas and try to feather it out.

after several days, I applied another product- a leather re-coloring balm, almost like a shoe polish. and buffed it out. It’s not 100% back to new, but it will last quite a few more years I think. I wish I had taken before and after pics.

How can you go wrong with Fiebing’s Leather Dye? Just made a basket weave belt today and dyed it black. It penetrates the leather very nicely. After applying I let it dry and then buffed it with a cloth.

Then I applied leather balm. My project came out great.

It’s hard to get proper leather dyes [and not just paint that coats the tops of shoes, eventually chipping off] in bright colours. I bought Fiebing’s bright red in order to re-dye a pair of Caterpillar boots, which had faded badly from red to an odd pink.

The dye is so easy to apply, doesn’t streak and dries evenly. Even though I sprayed afterwards with a waterproof protective spray it looked like the boots might not have needed it. They have come up a treat and the dye has penetrated into crevices and cracks.

They not only look spankingly brand new but at the same time have retained their worn look [which is what I wanted]. The dye is excellent quality and value for money.

Easy to use with good results on a smooth leather purse, a pebbled-leather purse, a wallet and a pair of shoes. I cut-up a priority mail box to protect my counter and wore gloves. Prepped the items using nail polish remover and a scrubby sponge.

Used the included dauber and a synthetic angled artist brush for detail areas. The black definitely dries to a bronze-like sheen. Just use leather conditioner to buff-out the bronze finish. I used Kiwi leather conditioner; you need to condition the leather anyways.

I’m planning to finish my newly-dyed projects with Fiebing’s Resolene to prevent possible color transfer.

It is difficult to get Black Dye to look good. I have found that a light coat of any old olive oil followed by full strength Fiebing’s Pro Dye works well. The olive oil seems to make the dye go on easier, with more uniform spread and absorption.

A second coat of Dye will even make the color much richer. Finishing it with Tan Kote or Resolene completes the finish. For a glossy finish I will add a final light coat of Masters spray on Quick Shine.

This is a great product. It is a little expensive for a novice just getting started and you has to be stingy to come out because of the price for such a small bottle. If the bottle were twice as large; or maybe three times as large for the same money, it would cause more people would begin to try leather work.

I myself have held off making anything from leather for many years because of the high price of everything involved in leather making. I only recently started the leather craft after finding the items on the internet and locating the items at an affordable price.

The one important thing I located was a leather saddle making company that offered to sell me scrap leather by the pound. They even have a machine that cuts the leather to any thickness you want. That got me started and now I am making all kinds of things that will be pass down for generations.

The saddle shop informed me not to buy a leather preservative; as they only use the old hydraulic waste oil they remove from their leather crafting machines in the building. That saved even more money.

They use only hydraulic oil to stain and preserve their saddle leather. They never stain any leather with conventional stain. I got to learn how to do that and save even more money. They took me a tour of the whole operation to see the little tricks on how to make leather items.

I haven’t used the color tan, but l have used the brown one. I actual used on a pair of tan leather leaf earrings and l just loved the look. I just added soft strokes as a natural Fall dry leaf and they look beautiful.

It did a perfect stain and dried quickly. Absolutely fascinated.

Dye is spot on, seems to work a treat, unfortunately the lid on the bottle would not reopen for the back coat of belt. Product is 100% the best leather dye I have used. But next time I will decant the whole thing into a glass jar.

Wow, this dye was absolutely terrible. I ended up using an entire bottle on my veg tan pieces and STILL didn’t end up with black (it looked blue). Will stick with Fieblings oil dye next time.

applied this on new cow leather knife sheath and got amazing resault. worked with instructions on botel ( not too complex to understand ) and recomended to others even not experienced with all leather working like me.

This is the most comfortable couch in the world, but it was a hand me down, and the previous owners dog scratched it quite badly when they left her alone. I got this balm not expecting any miracles but the couch seriously looks brand new.

It literally worked a miracle! It does feel a little like pleather now or maybe I’m just used to the super worn soft leather but today I will be putting the mink oil on, and it did seem to soften up the small spot I tested it on already.

Over all VERY IMPRESSED with this transformation! Oh the couch is real leather, but some of the spots were very worn and it covered them all evenly in color. The color is darker but similar to its original color, for reference.

I will be interested to see how well this holds up, will update!.

Arrived very quickly. This ottoman was in such bad shape that I would have gone with a new piece of furniture but my kids love this old ottoman so much. It is quality leather that had no poly coating, but was very dry, old and worn.

This product was fast and easy to use. I used very little of it so got more value compared to similar products. My biggest concern was rub off of color after applying, but even before the recommended dry time, no color came off and I felt confident using it soon after, and had the same good experience after applying the conditioning oil.

I liked that the mink oil was included as well that was really needed in this case.

Awesome product everybody should know about esp if you are not a furniture expert. It was a first for me. The coverage of balm is even, though it covered a worn mottled olive green to a deep rich dark brown color for both sofa and love seat.

If you are wealthy youd probably just buy another living room set, this incredible for cost savers. Covers even with first application. This small container covered a 72 inch sofa with puffy pillows, side to side, front to back.

Dries almost instantly with no wet or tacky surface. Clean up is a breeze. My hands were balm free with a wet paper towel.

I got this due knowing that the color wasn’t going to be a nice flat black thanks to another review, but seeing it in person really made me realize they weren’t exaggerating. I had thrifted a pair of maroon leather shoes that I wanted to dye black, so I prepped the leather by deglazing it with pure acetone and went to work.

It took about 3 coats, drying for a bit in between, to seemingly get full opacity. You have to be careful with application too since it is a water-soluble dye, it lifts itself if you don’t apply it carefully.

The color, when at full opacity and dry, looks like the ink of a black ballpoint pen. It has a bronze sheen to it and was definitely noticeable. With this not being the finish I was going for, I ended up applying a layer of Kiwi Leather Dye (kiwi is more like a paint dye, ie.

leaves a shiny almost patent leather finish, but is a pain to do in more than one coat). Alone, this dye is meh. As a base in the way I used it, it works pretty good. I wouldn’t buy this again though based on the color alone.

This product is great – in very specific applications. The product description would lead you to believe that it is “permanent, and penetrating. for all your vegetable-tanned leather projects. ” This is absolutely not true.

This is a water-based product – NOT alcohol-based. Be sure you know which one you need before purchasing. You’ll have to do your own research, as this description is of no help.

I got this to dye a pair of second hand gloves I’d bought at the last minute for a costume. I wasn’t sure if it would work but the dye was very quick & easy to apply and turned the light brown gloves (almost) black with one coat.

I’m sure a second application would get rid of any subtle residual brown undertones. (I should have gone over it with a second coat but I ran out of time. ) I was also worried that the soft supple gloves would feel stiff after the application but the texture remained the same.

When you work in certain organizations, you best make sure you’ve polished your boots. Unbeknownst to many, your shoes/boots are often the first thing a superior will look at. It’s best to keep these folks from breathing down your neck, and Kiwi black is a cinch to use.

At $3. 50 or so, it won’t break your bank either. You’ll also save on migraine headache medications and/or reprimands. This is a really superior product. You can shine your boots in minutes. Simply squeeze, and it permeates the brush, which you’ll use to spiffy up your gear.

That ease of use, is much better than the old fashioned tin. Doing that was work, which is quite unacceptable. This can be found anywhere, and to have boots so shiny there’s a reflection, please use this one.

This will keep you in good standing, and also is a sign of professionalism.

I had a pair of very good brown leather slip-on shoes that were so comfortable, but the color was scuffing off here and there, making them look awful to wear anymore. I tried this Kiwi dye and was pleasantly surprised! The product applied easily with the sponge-tip, and the coverage was great! It even dyed over the elastic gores on the shoes, making the whole pair look practically new! I was fearful that the color might drip off if I got caught in the rain, but it didn’t, and in fact, lasted quite a long time before I had to touch them up again.

There is quite a lot in the bottle, too, for the price, so touch-ups – or even dying multiple pieces – won’t be a problem.

I thought my boots would be unwearable from white spray paint over spray, but the dye brought them back! It covered almost all the paint. They need some polish still but a huge improvement!

I was asked to make an American Flag from leather baseballs. I had seen the balls painted but wanted to do something different. That’s where your product comes in. I decided to hand dye 130 new and used baseballs that I then cut in half.

Each ball was cleaned( Easy Clean), prepared (Leather Preparer), dyed twice (to show off the brilliant red and blue color), polished with the leather balm, and sealed with the Water &Stain Repellent.

Every step of the way your leather products were used. The dyed balls turned out absolutely beautiful and then as a whole created a stunning end result. The American flag made from 260 halved baseballs is being displayed in the office of the American Association Independent Baseball Team out of Sioux City Iowa.

This is the first time that I attempted to use Angelus leather dye to color a guitar body After watching several of BIGD guitars videos. I was convinced that it was not difficult to do if I followed his instructions and proven techniques.

So I tried it, and it worked out fine. I failed to order the neutral and when I wanted to lighten the colors I could not do it. But, I ordered the neutral and was able to lighten up the colors and finished staining my guitar body:it came out nice, If I should say so.

First time buy for this product Wal Mart. Buy often from Tandy. Excellent dye for leather, economical and consistent quality.

I have used this to make jewelry. Mhsband and I make bracelets, belts, guitar straps, Bible covers. This stuff is great.

Normally I’m not real impressed with something that says it has a variable response from as little as 20W up to 1Kw. These speakers, however, are the exception. Hooked them up to a 500W amp and let ’em loose.

They really put out the Mid range and Hi’s. The low range isn’t a great punch, but that’s not what these are designed to bring out. they’re Hi and Mid range quality. We added a couple of 10″ 2-ways and the lows really came out.

No distortion either. Clear, concise and effective on the 3-way system. Depending on the sound you want, you may need to add a sub or some low-end speakers with them, but overall they performed as they should.

For a small to medium venue, these will work very well. You might need more than two or add a sub to get the low end punch but the value for the price is quite good. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t take up a lot of space, or doesn’t break your back or your bank account, then these are the ticket.

I recommend them.

I’ve used their products in the past so I knew that the quality is good. It’s not easy to find this dye locally so I was happy to find it on ebay. I’m not sure if there is a competitor selling a similar product for a lesser price, perhaps.

I was looking for a good medium red. I tried this and Angelus Red. On hickory, this dye gave me the better medium red. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is that the low VOC seems to have more odor than the regular, which I was not expecting and makes it hard to work with in the house.

I received everything on time. I used the dye on red shoes, so I used 2 applications, and the result is very satisfying.

I have used this product since its inception. This stain not only is the closest thing that the old time saddlers and tannery did, but it mixes readily with 100% neatsfoot oil to give your product a finish and protected look.

The stain does wear slightly different than dye, but either gives the worn product a more antique appearance or is easily touch up evenly with the stain itself or neatsfoot mixture. Dye on the other hand holds its appearance longer, however tends to bleed in certain instances, whereas stain does not.

It can be finished in your standard fashion as with dye and yields as good of a color coverage as the fore mentioned. If doing authentic reproduction gear for reenactments, I highly recommend this product as well as the full line of stains available at Weaver.

Easy to use with excellent results! I’ve included before and after pics of a holster I project I just finished with Fiebing’s. This was my first time using the product and the results were very satisfying!.

Gives leather a beautiful shade when followed by medium brown Fiebing’s Antique paste.

I used this dye to refurbish a pair of gray Frys boots for my very stylish daughter. She wanted a bright blueish red so I started with a burgundy undercoat of just polish then added this red dye. It was stunning!! And just the color she wanted.

The dye covered well, but still allowed a hint of the burgundy color to show through. If I had wanted the bright red, then another coat would have done the job well. Be sure to finish with a good waxing to keep the color safe.

I was making a Mother of the bride dress and needed brown shoes. I could find none that were both right and comfortable. I had a very old, very comfortable pair that were black with patent leather toes.

I purchased this to cover some ink marks on a red leather purse. It did not cover them at all so I was very disappointed. Dont even think about using this to change the color of any leather. Total waste of money and would have been better off just buying a small tube of acrylic paint at Michaels for 79 cents!.

This product is easy to use, fast, and yields great results. I’d been looking for something to make my boots black again, after having faded over the years from wear, and this did exactly that! I used it on a pair of black Modern Vice ‘Handler’ boots.

I even used it on the wooden heel which was originally black, but had turned brown in some spots from fading. My shoes look practically new again. I wish I had discovered this sooner!.

Really pleased with the effect of this gel, seems to be working. Thank goodness.

This product is fantastic!!! I mixed it with Angelus Glitterlites Desert Gold. I applied the mixture to a leather paper cup holder that was died with a mixture of Mahogany Pro Dye and Light Brown Pro Dye in equal amounts.

The chestnut color is absolutely beautiful. Then I added the Angelus Natural and Angelus Glitterlites Desert Gold. It is beautiful and really pops.

As my first time using the product I’m no expert but it certainly worked as expected and my project turned out great. My only comment would be on Fiebings color description. It is called medium brown but as far as I can see when used as is it is as black as can be.

Apparently it can be thinned with Tan Kote which might make a difference. Again, i am pleased with how it turned out and would recomend it.

When applied, it gave the appearance I was looking for, however it was the first time I have used it. Would more effect happen with repeated applications? Anyway, I got what I was looking for and I intend to use it more.

Give it a try, it made my project a little more professional looking.

Worked out fine. Matched leather footrests on one end of sofa and on recliner chair. Two coats for a near perfect finish. Buffed with cloth and “you can’t tell it was badly worn looking in large spots.

I got the red and medium brown for my first try at wood arrows. I absolutely love the way that the colors turned out. deep and vibrant. The red turned jewel-like after sealing. I wiped on with a rag; no mess.

I don’t dip to seal so I can’t speak about the color bleeding off into a dip tube but I did notice when sanding between coats of sealant that it did have a reddish hue so it probably bled into the sealant, but it didn’t bother me any.

A little of this leather dye will go a long way and I’ll probably buy more colors in the future to make more exciting and unique arrows. The colors shown matched closely to my end result on cedar shafts.
