Best Knife Set Consumer Reports (2024 Updated)

Horrible! Don’t purchase these knives. They start rusting immediately and they do not stay sharp. I can’t return mine so I’m stuck with them and it’s an extreme disappointment. I’ve owned this brand of knives before without any issues so I don’t know why this set was so bad.

I bought these knives before and love them. My daughter stayed with me for a few weeks and used them and she feel in love with them and asked could she have them as a House Warming Gift. So I gave them to her.

Ordered some more a different kind, BIG BIG mistake. I wasn’t happy with them. So I went right back and ordered me this set again. Was even happier cause now they are ON SALE YEA. I still would have ordered them even if they wasn’t on sale.

BEST INVESTMENT I EVER PURCHASED ON A KNIVE SET. SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This knife set is in a sturdy heavy wood block that is looking like it will resist scratches as I use it. I liked the contrasting colors of the handles vs the block, and it goes perfectly with the dark specks of granite in my kitchen countertop.

I just purchased the Four Star set so I can’t say too much about it. But so far I love love love it! I intended to buy a Henckels line since it’s a little more affordable. But the Zwilling employee at Macy’s let me feel and hold the different lines of knives and I have to say, I was wowed with how smooth it felt in my hand.

I tried other lines of Zwilling and Henckels but the Four Star was just oh so beautiful and perfect. I was staying away from forged blades because the ones I’ve used (a different brand) were so heavy.

But when I held the knife I was pleasantly surprised at how light it was. I paid a little more than what I had intended but it is so worth it. Love how the set looks on my counter too.

This set of basic knives contains what I generally need for cooking at home. The knives are so sharp. I love the fact that they are made in Germany. Upon opening, they were neatly packed inside its box.

The knife block and shears are made in China but they both seem to be well made, sturdy and even-surfaced. I’m looking forward to preparing many meals with this set. There’s also an additional slot in the block if in case I decide to add a santoku or another knife (but its too small a slot for a cleaver.

) Even though it did not come with a cleaver and steak knives, its okay since I rarely chop huge chunks of meat / bones and I prefer steak knives that would go better aesthetically with my flatware.

These knives are an excellent quality for a home chef that wants high end knives but needs to be mindful of price. Definitely higher quality than the average department store “nice” knives. I was please to find forged knives in this price range.

The knives are very sharp, not too light and not too heavy, with a comfortable feel at the handle. This set has a wonderful selection for many kitchen tasks. I love that there are 3 open slots to add to my collection with knives specific to my needs.

I am very please with this purchase. These knives seem as though they will last years.

I gave this as a wedding gift. I haven’t heard, but I’m guessing it was well received. We’ve had Case knives for over 50 years, back when they were chrome vanadium steel with rosewood handles. I’m a fanatic about good knives, particularly those made in the USA, and take great pleasure giving them as in gifts.

I am really happy with the knives and JB Tool the only thing i have to say bad about my exp is the knives weren’t very sharp when i got them for new knives. that being said JB tools offered to refund my money and pay for shipping back.

I just sharpened the knives myself and they work great, i guess they had gotten dull from sitting which knives are known to do.

I really like this set. It’s the perfect addition to my countertop. I love having easy access to all the knives I could possibly need while cooking and serving. The knives themselves are extremely sharp and have been holding up well with hand washing.

One of the steak knives did arrive with a small spot of rust but it was easily removed.

We have loved Henckles products since we started using them. We started with singular knives here and there as we were tired of our Calphalon set. We loved the knives so much we put them on our wedding registry.

One of our family members was gracious enough to purchase the 16 pc knife block for us and we have been satisfied since. The knives came extremely sharp but they dulled very quickly on wooden cutting boards, luckily it came with a sharpener.

We also have a set of steak knives we purchased separately before we got the block and we love them as well. Great products! We prefer these over Cutco products due to price/ value. We will continue to buy!!.

Before highlighting the setbacks, I will highlight that I would re-buy this item or possibly buy the 7 knife self sharpening set because the kitchen knives are great. Dissappointed that these are marketed as forged and made in Spain very proudly accross the box.

As highlighted below in many reviews, wish I read them before, the steak knives are stamped and made in other countries (mine were made in India). I would recommend getting the 7 knife self-sharpening set and buying the Zwilling 4 star steak knives separately because you will most likely need to upgrade sometime down the road anyways.

I had heard great things about these knives… that’s why I bought them. Sadly I fid not enjoy them as much as the person who gave the recommendation. My knives have started to get little rust marks all over them and they are not even a year old yet.

I found the metal blades to be on the thin side. Maybe I’m spoiled by the knives I use in the kitchen at work or maybe I just got a bad set or block. The scissors are amazing. They will cut anything with ease.

I was needing a new set as mine was 20 years old. ( Lamson) I made the right choice with this one. It has every knife i use along with steak knives. They are well balanced and slice with ease. They also look great on my counter top with taking less space than my other set.

I definitely recommend these to anyone that is a pro in the kitchen or is just starting out.

The knives are well made, solid, sharp and beautiful. I am very happy with my purchase. The handles are sturdy and big enough to easily get a grip on, and the blades are a good size too. My husband LOVES the steak knives too.

Pro S knives were my first introduction to premium knives. I was overwhelmed with the sharpness and how well they stayed sharp. They feel great and chop even better. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and having good knives is such a game changer.

My husband bought me these knives to replace my current smaller set. I like that the knife block is sturdy, nice looking, and blends with my kitchen. The knives are high quality. I didn’t like that the knives were not labeled LOL.

I had to figure out which knife goes in which slot. The first time it was shipped (got them from Macy’s), they were improperly packed without any bubble wrap or anything to cushion them. I received the box ripped and taped up with knives out of the packaging, and the block and some knives were damaged.

Getting the knives returned and sent to another address was problematic.

Received these as a wedding gift, and they are amazing. They’re so sharp, it’s no chore at all to cut anything. And the self sharpening block is definitely a plus! We picked this set because it’s made in Spain.

The other sets say “imported” and the one large photo shows the chef’s knife as made in Spain, but really, the others sets are all made in China. (The only thing made in China from this set is the shears).

So tricky advertising on their part. But I love my set! Definitely would buy this set again.

Hi! I’ve invested in several knife sets over the years. I started out with Farberware, then upgraded to Tools-of-the-trade, then Chicago Cutlery, and even CUTCO. I’d been going back & forth between these & Wusthof and I finally landed on the Henckels 20-pc self-sharpening set with knife block as I’m just not a fan of sharpening knives myself.

Wow! These are amazing! Not only are they the sharpest – out-of-the-box knives I’ve ever used, they really DO self-sharpen and stay just as sharp! I highly recommend these!!.

What comes to mind when you first heard the name Zwilling? I’ve heard “the BMW of knives” or the “Hermes of knives” well the product lives up to every bit of its name. When you first unbox the knives, you jump with excitement, one that makes a little bit of pee drizzle out.

When you first touch the handle, it feels like you are first laying hands on the partner of your dreams, the excitement continues to build. You take a moment to pause and enjoy the beauty of the engineering.

The way the light reflects off the blades. You think about weather you want to even toss away it’s packaging, for you want to savor this first time you unpack the knives. You continue to Unwrap each knife slowly, as you don’t want this to end too quickly.

You pause again to read each word of the protected knife packaging – no matter that the language is in German and you don’t understand each word. Still you stand there and pretend to comprehend. You slide each knife slowly into its block, careful not to poke the wood too hard fearful of damaging each tip.

Even though these knives would be able to handle it. You take another moment to be in awe of its beauty, placed so magnificently on the counter. You start to imagine what kind of items you would use it for.

But that moment is too far away. You think to yourself, do you even want to use it and contaminate the steel. You start to daydream about a YouTube show and putting these knives on full display. Prepping for a 5 star Michelin restraint.

I have had this set for about a month. This is my first set of real knives. I reached my 5 year milestone from my company and it was between this Zwilling Gourmet 7 piece set or a JA Henckels International 14 piece set.

Although I really wanted the JA Henckels, I decided to go with the Zwilling because it was made in Germany. I’ve done my reviews and ultimately I’d rather have the better quality vs more knives. They say the 2 main knives you’re going to use really are the chef’s knife and the pairing knife most of the time anyways.

I’ll eventually get some steak knives later but at least I can piece my set how I want. The main thing was getting the Zwilling German Chef’s knife. It is really sharp, well balanced, and very high quality.

The block is also very nice as well. The only reason I gave this set a 4 and not a 5 is because I would’ve wished for a Santoku knife instead of the bread knife and instead of the 3″ vegetable knife (it already came with a pairing knife), maybe a 5″ utility serrated knife.

Lastly, the shears are made from China and not Germany. All these are not deal breakers. Very happy with my set.

This knife set is a replacement for an old wooden handled Chicago Cutlery set. I wanted to use these knives before giving a review and one month into owning these knives I am pleased with their performance.

They are stamped and not forged knifes and therefore are lightweight in the hand and very easy to use. The handles are comfortable and easy to maintain. The blades are so sharp that prepping vegatables and fruits seem effortless.

The array of different knives in this collection will fit any kitchen need. I find cut vegges/fruits do have a tendency to stick to the surface of the chef knife as others have mentioned. It’s not a deal breaker for me but if I was using the knife in a professional setting it may be a nuisance.

The steak knives have no serration on the blades but are plenty sharp and cut meat well. I do handwash my knives and they are all looking splendid after a month of moderate use.

The knives are what I expected – sharp, well, balanced, and a pleasure to use. The block; however, literally ruins the visual appeal of the knives as it is the equivalent of a one-size-fits-all form letter.

I have no idea what knives go where (except the steak knives) in the block or what knives go in the 2 empty spaces. One slot looks cut for a veggie cleaver, but not sure. Overall, a bit disappointed with the block as the knives look disheveled.

I was expecting more of a custom designed block to give a more refined…and organized appearance. The shape and color of the block are nice. Put a bit more effort into the block!.

My wife and I had a collection of knives from a box store and got by just fine. We started talking about upgrading to a professional group of knives because our old collection wasn’t cutting the mustard for the amount of cooking we were doing while home and not going to restaurants.

This collection came up, and we went to William Sonoma to test them out and fell in love. Two days into using our new collection and we can’t imagine cooking without them and are disappointed in ourselves that we hadn’t purchased them sooner.

Best knives ever! So happy we finally decided to spend the money on a good set! Make sure you get the Twin version! Look for the sets with 2 little people on the front of the block. The ones with one person are the cheaper sets.

I bought a set at target and didn’t realize there were different kinds. Ended up returning them and getting some from the actual website! The Twin Signature knife sets are made heavier and just better all around.

You won’t be disappointed!.

Previously owned a lesser Henckels set with black handles. Hand washed mostly. The grips starting falling apart and chipping off due to design. BBB returned no questions asked, used the credit to upgrade to this set.

I cook quite frequently, these knives are a very nice quality. I also hand wash these. If you put a steak knife in the dishwasher, they will turn color on the blade. The sharpness of the blades are great.

They’re very lightweight. I wish it came with more variety of additional knives as I always finding myself searching for one while cooking and seem to need more. Very pleased with this set. Would also be a great gift.

Took them out of box and washed them one time in dishwasher since box plainly states dishwasher safe. Black handles came out chalky and gray. Returned them and BB&B was great. Upgraded to a better set.

Generally, the Henckels International” knives are mediocre. We have owned Four Star series for over 20 years.

The knives have an extremely elegant finish! My kitchen has a lot of natural light coming in which compliments the entire knife set on my counter. Not so light weight but not so heavy either, which makes handling a breeze.

My only negative note on the knife set (I had it shipped), was the packaging. The box was already damaged. Knifes came in bunched up on one side of the box, the shears had no foam or protection, and lastly some knives had the guards off.

Thankfully the knifes and shears had no scratches but other than that a very exquisite set.

The knives are beautiful, they look great on display on the easel stand. I love the way they feel in the hand. They are awesome to use, I love preparing food with them. You can get paper thin slices with no effort.

The only thing I was not impressed with was the easel. The packaging for shipping could have been better, and the easel arrived with a hairline crack running thru a portion of its center.

These knives fit my hands perfectly and have exceptional balance in use. This is extremely important when you spend a lot of time prepping food to prevent arm and wrist exhaustion/pain and is safer than an unbalanced knife.

My magnetic board did come with some separation in the wood and I will be contacting the maker for a replacement…but the knives are amazing.

I bought this set because it is the size, variety, and quality level I was looking for. Something between a full chef quality set and something where the blades are heavier instead of being as sharp or sharpen-able.

The corners of the handles are squared off instead of rounded like in other sets from Henckels, and even after buying the 7″ bread knife, which fits just fine, thank you (!), I have three more open slots for other knives if I wish, like a boning and fillet knife, for instance.

Also, the packaging when they ship it to you is done rather well; just be careful when unpacking the knives. They come all together in one small box wrapped up in tissue paper.

BBB. has seemed to Quit handling the TOP of the Line Henckels. The ones listed as ‘Pro’ are the VERY best. My set id over 22 years old and only have had the professionally sharpened twice. The steel is German made and there is NO better.

even Spain Sad that BBB has quietly removed them and flooded their site qith kess expensive and less quality Henckel products. You can research and find the ones I am speaking if in other sites. Warning! They are Expensive But worth it.

Disclosure… these knives were received as a wedding gift. Honestly, they make a great set of tools for a couple or family that will primarily use them to cut the essentials; bread, steak, heads of lettuce, maybe a salmon filet here and there, and chopping up vegetables.

BUT do they dull quickly! Perhaps it’s a user error! The quality also feels cheap. The handles have cheap plastic feel which is quite disappointing; especially if you run them through the dishwasher… say good by to the sheen.

All in all I say a solid knife set that will get the job done.

I’ve only had these for a couple of weeks, but I absolutely love them. I never thought kitchen knives should be so expensive so I’ve always used cheap knives. After using these that stay sharp, don’t ben, cut through anything like butter and feel good in my hands.

I admit I was so wrong. We have always purchased butcher packs of meat and portioned out ourselves. These knives make that a breeze. Thanks to my husband for just getting them without telling me.

Love Zwilling Four Star 2. Has a molded handle but a little more weight because of the metal cap on the end. Nice design and comfortable to work with. This block has the perfect collection of knives.

Two paring knives, 2. 75 and 4″ are great for numerous jobs in the kitchen. Serrated utility makes certain I always have a sharp blade to work with. Most blocks do not come with a boning knife which is an essential tool in my kitchen, and this block has one.

The hollow edge Santuko, and 8″ chef’s knife allow for my husband and I to work along side of each other. The bread knife makes it all complete. Love that the block includes storage for steak knives, which will be my next purchase.

The knives are really sharp and hopefully will stay sharp with the self sharpening block I am however quite disappointed with the weight of the knives. The knives these replaced were if a much more substantial quality.

If I had seen these in a shop and handled them first I would not have purchased them. I would have expected a much better product as these were double the price I paid for my previous set. Will see how they perform long term but overall I am disappointed.

I would not recommend that you buy these if you want a substantial heavyweight set of knives. Probably worth no more than £35. Afraid that’s my honest opinion. Hart’s of Stur were perfect with their execution of the delivery.

I was very happy and excited when I bought this product in May 2020. They were sharp, cut through meat flawlessly, and overall was happy to have them, to the point that I recommended them to my sister-in-law and sister for them to buy same set.

The self sharpening block is also awesome. However, after one year of use, the handle of the knife started to shatter. About 4 of my knives had shattered handles. I mostly hand wash my knives, although occasionally, when they get so much grease, I put them at the dishwasher.

But again, this is seldom. I’m hoping that j. a. henckels will abide by their guarantee that they provide lifetime warranty to their knives. Hoping I could get the replacements. I will still give them 4 star as they are fairly good knives.

First, and least importantly, these knives look beautiful on my counter. Second, the knives have a great weight while still feeling very balanced. Compared to my previous knife set, I feel like my cutting time has been cut in half with the ergonomic handles, sharp blades, and balanced weight.

Third, and most importantly, I love the self sharpening block!! I had never heard of that, and bought this set on a whim after seeing it at the store and needing a new set. We should be sharpening our knives each use, but I just don’t take the time.

As a result my knives full quickly, but these automatically sharpen each time you put them in and pull them out! No more full knives!!.

This is my second set of Zwilling Pro. line. I have a Pro-S set previously that served me over 10 years, but I didn’t have steak knives with it (Which I wanted). Since the Pro line came out I decided to give this a try since both the Pro and Pro-S are made of the same process and material but slightly different in style.

I prefer the weight distribution of the Pro-S as it’s better balanced and more beefy, but I like the Pro because it’s more refined and makes ever cut more precise throughout the entire length of the knife.

Depending on how you hold the knife (Especially if you like certain way of holding pinch grip), you should go try holding these two chefs knives before choosing the family line you want. Either way, you won’t regret if you bought either the Pro or Pro-S.

By the way, I gave my Pro-S set to my mom and I do use it whenever I go visit her!.

I absolutely have had a wonderful experience with these knives! I really like the finishing look of the stand. This set comes with 12 different knives, 1) 8″ chef knife 2) 5″ boning knife 3) 6: 4. 5″ steak knives 4) 8″ bread knife 5) 5″ utility knife 6) 5″ santoku knife 7) 3.

5″ paring knife and shears. These knives come to you very sharp, so be careful! I am not used to working with sharp knives as my last knife block, did not have a sharpener attached. I didn’t want to buy one to store some where, so its nice that this comes with it attached to the block and ready for use at all times.

The instructions say to use the knives for two weeks before you follow the sharpening routine and then sharpen every two weeks. These knives cut everything very easily. The instructions to sharpen knives were very easy to follow.

You have to make sure that when you are sharpening knives that you go all the way to the bottom of the sharpener, no matter how long the knife is. Bigger knives are inserted at the top and the smaller knives are inserted at the bottom of the opening.

Once in place, slide the lever all the way up and back all the way down 10 times, then carefully take the knife out, rinse and dry the knife thoroughly before storing. These knives need to be hand washed and never washed in the dishwasher.

Washing them in the dishwasher can decrease the quality of the knife, damage the blade edge and reduce the stainless steel integrity. I typically wash by hand and let air dry before storing but the instructions say to dry them thoroughly before storing to prevent watermarks and spotting.

The block is easy to clean as well with a thorough wipe down. The shears come apart for easy cleaning. There are also suction cups at the bottom of the base to keep the knife block in place. If you ever need to move the block, be sure to remove all the knives before doing so.

This comes with a “Quick Start Guide”, which gives you the sharpening instructions, sharpener tips and tricks, recommended knife usage, what’s in the box and cleaning& care. So far, I have been thoroughly impressed with this set and recommend this to those who are looking for a better knife experience.

i purchased these knifes to replace what was my current WUSTHOF set. I had this set for about 20 years, they are starting to show their age. I am defiantly not regretting this purchase what so ever. I bought these for a couple reasons and that’s they are a solid knife and come with a built-in sharpener.

they will last for a long time. only complaint that I have. My bread knife came slightly damaged. its not going to affect its performance but the blade has what i would describe as a dip into the cutting edge.

almost like it was ground in to far and also looks like its dented in that spot. I will also add that I like the fact that you can buy a new ceramic stone for the unit and not have to replace the whole thing just because of that.

I love these knives, I’ve been wanting them for quite some time now. I went to a knife store and was able to actually talk to a real person about these knives. He could have totally up sold me to a much more expensive competitors set, but he explained why these knives were better as far as quality, life time warranty, affordability and function.

He told me that these should be the last knives I will ever have to buy, provided that I care for them properly. We have not been disappointed with our purchase, I only wish we would have bought them sooner.

Really appreciate the variety of knives you get at this price point. It’s more than enough to get you started, and you shouldn’t need to upgrade for a long time!! These knives a sturdy and not flimsy.

I’ve seen the Pro series before and they are great, but I’ve also seen the lesser series below the Twin Gourmet. In my opinion, these are the best of both worlds. Quality and value! I really like the full tang and triple rivets to secure handles.

Knives are very sharp out of the box, and they really hold their sharpness for a long time.

This is the first knife set I’ve bought in years and I decided to splurge on a good set. Based on the reviews I read, this set had some of the highest ratings. When I took the block out of box and unwrapped the knives, I was not disappointed.

The quality and craftsmanship is excellent. My previous set was a very good set, but the knives were heavy. These knives are much lighter and balance well in your hand and sharp as sharp can get this side of surgical instruments.

I’m looking forward to putting these knives to the test.
