20 Best Keycaps For Black Keyboard (2023 Updated)

This is the keycap set that should have been installed on the Razer Huntsman from the get go. The Razer PBT keycap upgrade set fixes two issues that bothered me about the original keycaps equipped on the Huntsman.

First the shift characters on the keycaps are not lit (example 3 is lit but # is not) only the base character. Two the standard keycaps have a smooth slightly slick surface. This surface somewhat hinders my fingertips gaining traction on the keycaps when typing fast negatively impacting accuracy.

The upgraded keycaps have a slight rough textured surface that is just enough for my finger tips to gain sufficient traction to maintain fast typing accuracy. Well worth the price paid. It’s possible newer iterations of the Huntsman may have this keycap set standard equipment.

I swapped my stock keycaps on my Apex Pro TKL for these and I’m glad I did! If you thought the RGB was great on the stock Apex Pro, this takes it up a notch significantly. The caps are built well with a noticeable finish difference over stock.

It has a very clean, matte, if not almost mildly “abrasive” finish on top followed by a hazy white base. The colors absolutely explode though the white lower and intensify the brightness immensely. One thing to note is that people who use specific colors for certain keys, or integrate key colors for apps like Discord (through the SteelSeries Engine) may find the colors bleed more, making quick identification more difficult.

This bleeding of colors makes for beautiful lighting effects but may be noticeable for those who individually light a bunch of keys.

HyperX pudding keycaps are great for both a great textured feel (with Doubleshot PBT) and amazing underglow for your keyboard’s RGB. The keycaps themselves feel amazing, and the keyboard’s RGB will be better outlined.

These keycaps are best for someone who wants the best of RGB and quality without spending too much. A downside is that if you use Corsair or Razer keyboards (like me), you will need to get a seperate non-standard bottom row (YMDK from AliExpress is best) to fit your complete keyboard with pudding keycaps.

Otherwise, you will have to deal with the downside of not having all keycaps fit.

Pros: Quality keycaps that look absolutely incredible on top of an RGB display. Super easy to install with the tool provided. Cons: Nothing.

Got these for my new ducky one 2 keyboard and could not be happier with how they look and feel! Price point is very cheap compared to other brands. Definitely recommend

Colorway: Slate Overall: Good for the price. Pretty much exactly what I expected going in. Happy with my purchase. Build Quality: Not bad, considering the price. I haven’t had any breaks or manufacturing issues.

Minimal flex and good fit on the switches. Slight warp in my spacebar, but only perceptible when put up to a straight edge, not noticeable on the keyboard itself. The caps sit evenly on my keyboard. Feel: The feel is what I expect from decent PBT.

Well textured to not feel slippery. Sound: They sound about the same as other shine-through PBT caps I’ve used. No problems with it at this price point. I would love for it to sound a bit deeper, but these by no means sound hollow or cheap, especially for shine-through.

Color: The colors for both the grey and black in the Slate colorway are not quite as deep as the renders in the gallery may lead you to believe. There are a few pictures in other reviews that are a better representation, while others seem to be deeper than what I have, may be due to different lighting, or may be inconsistent coloring between batches.

The color is consistent from key to key. Just know going in that the color may not be exactly what you expect. Shine-Through: The legends are clear and consistent for north-facing LEDs, at all but the lowest brightness levels.

As to be expected, the legends are very difficult to read without backlight, especially with the grey keys. May not be what you’d want if have a no/different LED setup on your board. Key Set: I have this cap set on a full size Ducky One 3 and this set obviously does not have the 4 extra keys, (calculator and volume).

Also, this set has a menu key instead of a second Windows key. This isn’t a problem as I don’t expect a keycap set to have any of these. But if you’re in a similar situation, be aware.

If you’re looking to try something different from your standard Cherry profile, this is where I’d recommend most people start. I liked my set of MT3 Susuwatari when I bought it over a year ago now, and I still like it today.

After a year with the product and owning quite a few other keysets and profiles, I still love the typing experience and distinctive look of MT3, even with the iffy bottom row angle. The colors are good but not quite GMK level.

The typing surfaces did shine to some extent, but its nothing terrible and I still enjoy the look and feel of them. The kitting is still amazing and it has options for even more compatibility with additional kits.

The price is pretty damn good for the quality you’re getting too. The quality is probably just slightly below SP and GMK, but those would have you paying significantly more for a kit with this type of compatibility – In Stock GMK ranges from $140 to $185 (for less plastic, too), while you could probably pay twice that for a Signature Plastics kit.

On the other hand, these make my Maxkey SA caps look preeeettty bad in terms of quality and consistency while going for similar prices The only thing that is keeping me back from recommending this even harder is the existence of the PBT MT3 sets (outside the Lord of the Rings ones), which look and feel about as nice for a similar cost, while not having the issue with the uncomfortable bottom row and a more resilient surface to wear and oil accumulation.

The Lord of the Rings keycaps (I don’t own them. yet) look pretty cool and I’d probably be willing to pay the extra money for the licensing if this bottom row if it weren’t for the bewildering choice to maintain the slanted bottom row.

The other thing keeping me from recommending this particular set is that, if you like the aesthetics of some of the other kits – Camillo, Dasher/Dancer, WoB/BoW, Jukebox. are all of the ones I can think of rn – those are cheaper and are probably exactly the same quality and level of compatibility, just without some of the ancillary kits that this one has.

Alltogether – if you want something new or eyecatching and don’t want to wait on groupbuys or pay out the nose for in stock caps from other sites, ABS MT3 is still a fantastic choice, though I’d recommend checking out a few of the other MT3 kits just to be sure that this is the one that you want.

Caps themselves are pretty neat, good build quality and nice feel to the caps. However theres a few glaring issues: (1) Ship time was horrendously late, now I know that this is the MK community and delays are pretty much expected these days but from Drop+Matt30 its something that I would expect to be better mannaged.

Especially when the delay has been as long as it has been. (2) Legends have some issues. The text legends seem to have a different thickness/lineweight to them,the text on my Capslock key seems to be almost tripple the tickness of my Shift key below it.

Inconsistencies like these should not be put past quality control, especially at this pice point, these are not some cheap caps, prices are GMK or ePBT comparable. (3) Renders vs product. Okay so hear me out on this one, I know renders stray usually a fair amount from the finished product, usually this is perfectly understandable however these renders differ quite a lot.

From the legend size, to the wording used, and worst of all the colours. The colour of these caps compared to the renders is fairly off, the colour mods are no where near as vibrent as the renders. The caps themselves are also heavily textured, but again no effort was taken to display this in the renders, I wouldn’t mind if adding surface textures to renders digitally was hard, but its a very easy job to do.

Its a shame I have to flame these keycaps so much as what they do right they do very well, however I could not recomend this set without telling people of the glaring isuess behind it. If you dont mind the more muted colours of the mod packs, the legends adgacent to eachother being off (this in my opinion is the worst issue as its so visible) and the loooooong shipping time this set may be for you, however I do not think that these issues should be present at this price point, by a manufacturer that is as established as these guys are.

Im honestly very disapointed with these caps.

It seems to me that producing consistent caps with this tooling is probably challenging, as QC with ABS MT3 has been hit-and-miss. My particular example of 3277 is a hit; no wonky legends or weird stems, everything looks basically perfect as far as manufacturing goes.

I have to agree with some other folks that the colors aren’t that close to the renders. While it’s true that real-life colors almost never look exactly like rendered ones do, these are still a bit farther than I expected, especially from a Matt3o set.

I happen to like the colors as they are which is fortunate for me, but as others have said the light gray is significantly lighter than in the renders, affecting contrast of the legends. I do think it’s a great looking set, but it’s not what one might expect looking only at the renders.

I will say that the lighter or more subtle the color, the harder it seems to be to match in general – this has been true of every keyset GB I’ve seen for years. While I still say Susuwatari is one of the best keysets ever made, quite a few people including myself noted that the grays did not match the original renders, either in tone or shade – though thanks to them all being darker, it was less obvious than in this case because there were no contrast issues.

These days actual photos are used to sell that set, so expectation management isn’t really a factor with it. I got the turquoise accent kit, which is farther-off from the renders than the gray. Again I actually like the color quite a bit, but it’s not the same color in the renders at all.

The real one is a fair bit lighter, and quite a bit warmer – sort of like the blue-green you might see in a 1950’s diner.

This are fairly decent keycaps which works nicely with RGB keyboards. The key spacing is a closer than a normal mechanical keyboard this is fine if you are used to a your average laptop chiclet keyboard but may require some adjustment if you are used to more normal spacing.

The font is nice and neutral and does not scream gamer even if it comes a gaming company. The keys are doubleshot ABS so they will eventually wear out and show the lower layer, a PBT version would be nicer.

The thing is if you want replacement Swiss keycaps with a cherry stem these are pretty much your only choice.

I got these in yesterday and while I do like them, I do have some issues with them. The first is a minor one, I guess, but in person they seem much darker than in the photos. As a result, they are pretty hard to read in low light.

I don’t sit around with the lights off (in fact I have all the windows open right now), but the corner my computer is in is still fairly dark and I definitely have trouble reading the legends. Maybe that’s just an issue of my own expectations, so I’m not really marking them down for that.

The actual quality of the keycaps is excellent and I like them a lot. What I am marking them down for is how they are bundled. The base kit does not include an R0 DEL key, so I have to buy the hobbyist kit for that.

I hardly consider that a “hobbyist” use case as 75% layouts are pretty popular these days, so it’s quite annoying to have to buy additional keys just to get that one. If the “any key” had been R0, maybe I wouldn’t mind, but it’s not, so.

yeah, that’s pretty annoying. Additionally, the accent kit should really come with more options. As it is, for a 75% keyboard, I can use the ESC, arrows, WASD, and Windows keys. The rest are basically useless.

I get that MT3 uses a lot of plastic, but it’s still ABS and frankly for how much they are charging, they should really include more in each of the bundles.

I’m a sucker for keycaps. I have FAR TOO MANY sets of them as it is. So, when I saw this, I thought I’d give this profile a try as it was gorgeous and a profile I’ve never tried before. Granted, it is something one needs to get a bit used to, especially when one is a writer like myself, but overall I’ve found it comfortable and easy to type on.

I was worried about the F and J keys as I’m a touch typer and usually look for the nub on the letters to know where my hands are without looking at them. However, while these don’t have nubs, they do feel different and are indented a bit more than the other keys around them, allowing me to type as usual.

Put it this way, while its a gorgeous set as a whole, it might not be for everyone. Especially for those who are heavy typists.

My black keycaps finally arrived and after spending about 15 minutes installing them, I’m very happy with the results. The new keycaps are the same quality and identical in every way, except they’re black.

The original white keycaps looked awful in my opinion, and really detracted from the user experience — at least for me. Perhaps keycap color should be an option when buying a new Freewrite, rather than an after-sale upgrade.

I would have ordered one with black keycaps. I will keep the original white keycaps in case I ever want to reinstall them for some reason.

… for a non-English writer it would be nice to have printed on the keycap what the keystroke actually produces. Yes, I know (as you told me), I can just buy the Danish characters somewhere else. It would be nice though to have a complete set in same typeface.

Please disclose who makes the keycap sets so I can persuade the to make my missing pieces.

Of course I don’t really need cool black keycaps for my Freewrite. They neither spell better, nor make better word choices for me. But they bring a little extra fun to using my Freewrite. I think my inner child is happier because I put them on.
