20 Best Hybrid Bike For Seniors (2023 Updated)

I bought this bike because my 20 year old mountain bike was getting too uncomfortable for me due to back issues. The build quality seems to be very good, and the paint is a nice deep blue that doesn’t come out in the online pictures.

The frame geometry coupled with the adjustable stem and high-rise handlebars puts me in an upright riding position, so my back isn’t bent so far now. The larger 700c38 wheels and front shock provide a smoother and more comfortable ride.

The front shock is a little stiffer than what I’m used to, but it does a decent job of absorbing sharp impacts. It should serve its intended purpose fine for the type of riding I do, which is mostly for exercise and riding around the neighborhood with my family.

The gel seat is wider than a MTB saddle, and provides quite a bit more support, so I can even ride without wearing my padded biking shorts. While the seat is mounted on a post with a shock built in, I find that it doesn’t provide a lot of shock absorption as the shock is in-line with the seat post, but the forces from me “bouncing” when going over bumps is at an angle to it, so the seat doesn’t really compress the shock.

If I lean back, I can feel it move more, but that’s not how I ride. I may look at an aftermarket solution for this in the future. The gearing on this bike is a 21-speed (3×7) with a very large low cog, which is quite a bit different from my previous 24-speed (3×8).

I like the fact that the front chain rings have a guard that should keep pants legs from getting caught by the chain and largest ring. While it shares some of the same gearing as my previous bike, the larger wheels (700c38 vs 26×2.

5) result in the same gear ratio requiring more effort, so it’s taking some time to find a new chain ring/sprocket combo that’s comfortable for me, but that’s not a knock on the bike. Just some info for prospective buyers.

The shifting is very quiet, and I like the trigger-style index shifters as opposed to the grip shifters. The front derailleur wasn’t aligned properly when it was installed, so I am having to adjust it so it shifts properly and doesn’t interfere with the chain.

Again, this isn’t a knock on the bike itself, just FYI. The rear has some trouble getting to the smallest cog, but I’m not sure why yet. I’m guessing that it is a matter of getting it adjusted properly and not an issue with the equipment.

The brakes work very well. The levers are plastic instead of aluminum like on my old bike, but since I’m not going to be bombing any backcountry trails any more, this shouldn’t be a problem. They do seem to be very sturdy without any flex.

The tires are a Chinese brand that have a unidirectional road oriented tread, which is perfectly fine for the type of riding I am doing. It should be fine on groomed trails, but I wouldn’t do any kind of off-roading with them as they do not have a very open pattern.

The pedals are plastic platform type pedals with a flat surface, not grip screws or edges. I have not had any problem with keeping my feet on them. My old bike’s pedals have grip screws, and while I can see why you would want them, I found them to be a little too effective.

This made it difficult to make small adjustments to where my feet are set. I will probably remove the screws since my wife is using them now. Overall, I am very pleased with this bike. The only “cons” I can think of are the limited benefits of the seat post shock and the stiffer front shock, but those are very minor things that should not deter anyone from purchasing this bike.

I bought this bike about a month ago and have ridden it about 10 times at varying distances. So far, so good. Smooth ride and the padded seat (with little shocks) help absorb some of the bumps on my routes.

The gear shifters are smooth and easy to manipulate. The one thing to be aware of has nothing to do with the quality of the bike but rather the quality of the build. First, within a couple rides, I found the rear deflector was shifting – when I touched it – and I mean a light touch, it fell off.

Upon further inspection, it was already broken with a piece missing. Clearly someone tried to force it on the post and it broke, so they just plopped it on there hoping no one would notice. The handlebars were very loose and would wiggle no matter how much I tightened the bolts.

It was maddening. I decided to take off the handlebars and see what was up with the bolts, maybe put a washer in there – then I found a little plate on the underside of the handlebars that was barely finger tight.

Once I tightened that panel and reinstalled the handlebars, the wiggle disappeared. All I’m saying is to make sure you thoroughly inspect the bike before you ride off on it.

Was so excited with this Hybrid Bike with it’s aluminum frame and comfort seat with Shimano gears. What a disappointment. First ride things started going wrong so took to a local bike shop to get it a tune up (after 2 rides) they tell me the gears are shot and they can not get any in.

They adjusted the rear smaller gear to partially work but couldn’t do anything with the large pedal sprocket gears. Seat will not stay in place regardless of how much it is tightened and no rotation adjustment for a front to back tilt on the seat so men, better hope your prostates are up for some real pressure! Very dissatisfied!!.

I am 5’11” and this bike fits me comfortably if I lower the seat a little and raise the handle bars. I’ve ridden it about 15 miles so far. I bought it because I needed something that’s faster than a mountain bike yet more comfortable than a road bike, and that’s what I got.

I was happy to find that they shipped it almost completely assembled. I only had to attach the front wheel, the pedals, and the handle bars, but the breaks were already attached to the bars and the wheels and everything else was assembled.

If you plan on racing this is not a good bike, if you plan on mountain biking this is not a good bike, but it you want to comfortably ride to school or work, this does the job well. The gears are a little sticky going up hill sometimes, but for under 300 that’s what I expected in it’s components.

You will need an Allen wrench for set up. It also got to my house a lot faster than Walmart. com said it would.

We purchased this for our 15-yr old son for his birthday. The Bike arrived ahead of schedule, and unpacking and installation of the bike was very straight forward, and overall, it took about 2-hours from start to finish.

There were no mechanical issues with the bike whatsoever, everything went together smoothly, and work as expected. The bike is well designed, very light weight, and VERY pleasing to look at. My son has always had mountain bikes, so this is his first hybrid bike with the thinner road type wheels, and based on his feedback, he loves both the smooth ride and the handling of this bike.

Haven’t ridden a bike for about 5 years because I haven’t had the occasion, and I have been without a bicycle at my home. My 6-year old has been kind of late in getting off training wheels, so riding my own bike in a nearby parking area was supposed to give her incentive to learn.

She practiced a little on her own small bike, and then mine from Sears arrived, on time and easy to put together, together. We are now happily practicing. She was so unhappy (cried and cried) at first when I seemed better than she was.

Now she is happy, thinks she is better than me, and want’s a bigger bike. Sears?.

I’ve already recommended my purchase of this Schwinn 21 speed hybrid women’s bike to some of my girlfriends! I’m not an avid biker and didn’t want to spend $400+ on a bicycle. I wanted something reliable, aesthetically pleasing, and a brand name that I trust.

This bicycle was all of the above. For less than $300 and free shipping, you can’t beat it! It definitely fit the needs and purpose I was looking for. Very satisfied and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new cruiser for the summertime!.

I have been riding this bike for a little over two weeks every day around 15 miles a day here are my thoughts. To start the bike was pretty easy to set up. Shipping was overnight which was nice, especially since the bike cost little under $500.

When I received it there was some cosmetic wear on the crank that rubbed together because the shipping foam fell off, not a big deal to me but could be to others. I will come out and say that I am mechanically inclined and have done maintenance on previous bikes before, so I did not find it hard to put together.

If you have never held a wrench in your life or don’t have a basic mechanical sense I would suggest eating the $70 bucks or so and get a shop to build it. Once assembled I went on a shakedown ride an immediately threw the chain in high gear and needed to adjust the breaks and rear derailleur.

I came home and adjusted the drive train as well as the brake pad contact on the rotors and the brake levers. After one week of riding the brake contact needed adjusting again (this could have been my user error).

The pedal reflectors had started to come off and needed to be pushed back in and I applied a little super glue to keep them in. The brakes were screeching like a pig so I made sure that they were cleaned with some brake clean but alas they’re just super noisy.

After two weeks using the bike the inevitable happened and I laid the bike down after turning too hard in a puddle, rookie mistake on my part. The bike held up fine and nothing broke after being tossed down on concrete at about 15 mph.

I am pleased with the bike and find it very comfortable to ride. Let me share the negatives and positive of this bike. Positives: Great feeling to the bike, it feels sturdy and is comfortable on long distances.

Shimano trigger fire shifters, a great feature for an entry-level bike like this, shifts are smooth, and the gearing is perfect as long as you aren’t doing any crazy mountain biking rides. Disc brakes make the stopping power incredible and reliable; you could stop on a dime if you wanted to.

700cc tires and rims allow for customizability you could easily switch to a narrower or wider tire depending on your ride style. Looks, the bike looks aggressive yet subtle at the same time, it is just a good-looking bike.

Tons of braze-ons for accessories Negatives: Assembly, the assembly was a little sloppy out of the box, everything needed to be tightened and nothing was super optimal just kind of assembled and thrown in a box.

Cheap resin pedals, they had to cut costs somewhere, while it is sad that Retrospect has outsourced to China for bikes and only designed in California some part quality was cut. The pedals feel okay for now, but I have my bets on them being the first thing to fail on the bike.

For $500 I would have liked to have the cable and brake lines run through the frame instead of on the outside. I would have also liked to see a better crankset with double or triple to really take advantage of those gears.

Brakes, super squeaky out of the box but they get the job done so I can’t complain too much. All together this bike is at the upper end of budget hybrid/gravel bikes. Is it a great gravel bike? No. Is it a speed dedicated urban road bike? No.

Can it do both of those adequately well? Yes. This bike is for the person that wants some adventure to the bike rides, you can ride on a gravel path, you can climb that dirt hill, and you can comfortably ride along your local bike path.

While I do wish there were some higher quality parts on the bike for the price, the versatility of the bike is it’s the biggest advantage. This bike can do many things just fine, the bike is meant to do many things well not just one thing great.

If that sounds like what you want then I would highly recommend the bike.

The bike arrived as promised, perhaps earlier. If you are not adept at bike repairs or assembly, I highly recommend taking it to a professional bike shop for final assembly. Just about everything needed tightened or some level of adjustment.

The disc brakes are slightly out of the plane of rotation, but a few miles with frequent braking had them settle in. I added a rear rack, higher quality pedals, water bottle cages, and a longer stem to compensate for the short top tube.

Overall a very nice bike for the price.

Really nice looking bike with a smooth ride, lots of control. Aside from the pedals and seat, everything else seems of good quality. The assembly was a lot more difficult than I thought. It took a seasoned bike guy about 3 hours to assemble and required tools that weren’t included to get it right, and then another hour or so of tweaking on the ride.

This is a picky thing but I was surprised about the large branding and bike model name all over the large exterior packaging that was left on my doorstep – discrete would be much preferred with a higher end purchase.

The bike itself is great. It is very smooth and light. Seems to shift well and has needed no adjustments yet. The saddle is extremely hard. I believe giant should ask what size saddle you would like because they definitely are not one size fits all.

I am not a large person but more attention should go into the saddle. The handgrips are uncomfortable as well. I bought my wife a LIV Alight and her grips are very nice. I’m happy with the bike but feel like Giant could have spent a little more time on the saddle and grips.

Two days old and love this machine. Firstly the look. Well, it just looks great. Modern with good lines and the paint finish is fantastic. That deep glossy Moss green really sets the bike off. Makes a nice change from greys, silvers, blacks, whites and red shades that most models seem to be.

Strangely it looks quite futuristic with it’s sweeping cross member and well profiled tubing. It also has a very traditional look which I like. I keep looking at it. If I could have it framed I would haha.

Seriously though, it’s a beautiful looking machine and it makes you feel good just looking at it. Secondly, quality. Again, for the money, outstanding. The levers, grips, gear switching etc are all firm, easy to use and look sharp.

They really feel built to last. The frame feels extremely robust yet sporty (Probably due to the lightness of the aluminium frame, even though it has steel forks). The paint finish as already mentioned is of high quality.

Really shiny and glossy. The tyres even look a treat on this bike. For a Hybrid, they look sleek and have plenty of grip. Really impressed with the quality here Giant. For me, the quality is up there with more expensive models.

Thirdly, the ride. Superb. The tyres are slick enough for a sporty feel and give a good turn of speed on a flat road. You can really fly on this for a flat handle barred machine. The brakes are quite good for a V-brake design.

I’m 114kgs and the stopping power for this sort of load is really good. Feels safe and controlled. As for the drive, the Shimano Tourney gears are not my favourite set of switch gear but they are very easy to use and smooth enough.

The 21 speed gearing gives plenty of range, so you could easily concur light terrain, hills and gravel paths. But I do feel this bicycle is more suited to roads and country lanes, where you can cruise one minute, taking in the scenery and the next minute bomb along at speed to challenge yourself on a time trial.

Again a sporty feel. A happy customer.

I purchased the Escape 3 about 6 months ago and so far have about 1,500 trouble free miles on it. Other than a few loose spokes, I haven’t had to do any repairs so far. My reason for selecting the Escape 3 was because it has external cable routing.

This made it easy for me to replace the flat bars with my preferred North Road bars and replace cables with longer cables so everything fits correctly. I was also able to move my fenders and rack from my old road bike the the Escape and everything fit perfectly.

I really enjoy this bike after retiring my 40 year old road bike. The frame is stiffer than my old bike but the ride is still reasonably compliant. I was also surprised at how comfortable the seat was but still replaced it with my broken in Brooks.

Overall, very happy with my purchase.

Bikesonline and their team were great, but the build quality of the bike fell a bit short especially at this price point. First shipment received had a damaged front brake cable, second had some scuffs and a scratch on the top of the frame – nothing too serious, and the team compensated me for it rather than going through another replacement.

For anyone buying this take care with the front brake hydraulic cable – it runs dangerously close to the spokes (in my case it was hitting and I had to velcro it down) and the fastener on the front of the fork may be a pinch point – it’s in the exact position where the original cable had damage, and holds the cable at an angle that may cause problems with a hard turn.

If you’re a novice and don’t want to risk it I’d avoid this model. Other than that the bike performs fantastically and it’s hard to beat at that price with the parts it comes with, it could just use a bit more love in it’s assembly.

All the staff @ the Histon store (both pre sale & during and after test ride) and were fantastic and so helpful and patient all much appreciated as Im a novice returning after many years. As for the bike its fantastic value for the specification and has everything you could want from a Hybrid & superior to many at this sale price.

Quality of GT brand shows throughout bike; had to make slight tweaks on setup but that’s expected when boxed.

Great quality, awesome bike! I have no complaints about this bike, only good things to say! Love the bluish gray and red colors. Love the handles. The tool kit that came with that was so useful in adding my water bottle bracket to the bike with and lowering my seat.

Added a padded seat cover and I was all set!!.

This is my second sandals DS1 and I absolutely love these bikes -there’s only a few things I would suggest: they need better more comfortable seats – I have to replace them immediately they’re awful.

and also the kick stand? Why would you not have one on every bike? I think that’s ridiculous. It other than that I love these bikes for rail trails roads and commuting too.

I’m 14 stone/90kg and 5’10/178cm, I went for large and it’s perfect for me. I have a shorter than average reach too so I don’t think I’d be more comfortable on a medium. I got my bike delivered to store and they assembled it for me.

When I collected it, the quick release front wheel was easy to take off and fit in my car with the back seats down. The bike handles well, very comfortable and adjustable in all the right places. Very light weight frame and good suspension.

I ride a mix of road and trail and it’s perfectly suited. My one watch out is the size of the handles. I have average or smaller hands for a man of my size and they feel cramped next to the gears/brakes/bell on the bars.

I would recommend sitting on a bike and testing your reach, and comfort.

For nearly a year I was pursuing a comfort bike, same brand as a relative had at their nearby vacation home. I received little support from that brand’s Florida shops, and no support from their corporate offices.

Eventually, I turned to Giant Bicycles who carried a very similar bike, their Cypress DX. Though I couldn’t locate the Cypress DX I needed in the SW Florida shops, Giant offers a program where you purchase the bicycle from their website (size and color), pay a $35 destination fee, and in a week pick up the assembled bicycle from the Giant authorized shop of your choice.

Giant gets the boxed bicycle there, and the shop assembles. I called a couple of Giant authorized shops to inquire about timeliness of the process, one of which was Paradise Bicycles on 6 Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers, FL (Just one mile from Rt 75).

The very pleasant owner of the shop confirmed that the one-week delivery/assembly process works out great, and I was assured that on the day I flew into the area they could have my Cypress DX prepared for pickup.

And that’s exactly what transpired. The owner and her son were in the shop the day we came for the Cypress DX, and focused on exactly what I needed. After a test ride a couple of adjustments were made, a kickstand and two bottle cages were installed, and we were on our way.

Couldn’t be happier with my Cypress DX, and I highly recommend this Paradise Bicycles location if you’re in need of a bicycle or service in SW Florida.

this was my first bike, i have since upgraded but I will say I would have never even gotten started without this bike. It lasted me 2 years and only with minor upgrades such as tires, grips, handlebars, and pedals.

I took this bike past it’s intended use and one thing was for sure, it is built tough. It may not be as confortable as a full suspension or even most hardtails but that to me was the fun in it. This bike taught me many skills and got through a few good sized races.

It lasted through some good sized jumps and a few crashes. I got mad at it a few times because of shifting problems but I had just been over-using it and that’s how you know it’s a good bike, you can take it past its intended use and it holds up.

Anyway, I very much suggest this bike if you are a beginner or are on a budget, it’s worth it.

I started looking for bikes for my wife and myself last month. I visited a variety of stores that had poor selection, poor customer service, and in some cases I was told the bike specialist only worked 2 days per week.

We visited Mike’s in downtown Roseville on a Sunday after church. The gentleman who waited on us took the time to ask us questions about what type of riding we would be doing and the features we were interested in.

I’m chubby, out of shape, and hadn’t ridden a bike in seven years. I’m also short and basically needed a bike that would fit an obese child. I’d researched this bike online, and it fit the bill. I can step through and it doesn’t cause back pain when I ride it.

One thing I will note is it’s not great for hills. (I’m also out of shape though, which I’m sure doesn’t help). Seems to do well on trails or pavement though. Also, I’m 5′ and the seat was a bit too high even at the lowest setting.

I had the bike shop “chop” it for me and now it’s perfect. Of note: The bike fits in the back of a Kia Soul if you put the seats down, and it’s pretty light. I researched bikes for a long time before landing on this one, and while I would’ve loved to have spent less, the bike is worth the money.

I also like that by purchasing it through Erik’s I get good service.
