20 Best Hockey Helmet For Youth (2023 Updated)

Great helmet! I just got back into ice hockey after not playing since 1995. My old Cooper helmet was really hard inside and heavy so wanted to upgrade. I tried on many helmets and this one fit the best and price was in my budget.

I’ve been playing in it since April and love it. Fits perfect, light weight and true to size. I wear a Medium. I added a Bauer Concept clear shield and that attached very easily. Great helmet for the price.

My squirt loves it, especially that he can adjust it on the fly for custom comfort. His last helmet had a buckle on the chinstrap instead of the snap so he struggles with that but he’ll figure it out soon enough.

He paired it with a Bauer Concept III clear face shield which works well on this helmet.

The helmet is very comfortable but the adjustment mechanism can come loose and I had to reroute the wire that came loose on mine. I now check my helmet every time I put it on. Also, it didn’t come with screws for attaching the mask, so I had to take them off of my old helmet.

I was blown away at the quality of this helmet, the graphics are amazing and it has nice weight to it, not cheap plastic. While it is not meant to actually protect, it is great gift. My 5 year old grandson was blown away.

It’s great as dress up gear to take your child to see a professional hockey game or just awesome room decor for that hockey fan.

Great graphics on the Caps mask. For Christmas, I got two, one for my 14 yo & one for my 9 yo. I had my 14 year old try it on. it was a bit snug, but he loves it either way. to play in or to add to his Caps collection.

My 9 yo will be excited to get his on Christmas! Also I bought one in store & saw cheaper online. the one shipped online came with the chin guard, in store did not, so that was a great addition to it.

My son can’t wait to play street hockey with his mask!.

This was a very cool helmet. It was a Christmas present. Unfortunately it came with a broken strap and looked used.

For years I just assumed that hockey causes headaches (it does if you’re an Islanders fan, but that’s a different story). When my son got a new helmet at Pure Hockey the salesman suggested I try the Tacks 910.

OMG, it was so comfortable I bought two. one in black for scrimmages and later a blue one to match my beer league uniform. Apparently I have a freakishly large noggin, or at least an odd-shaped one. My hat size is between 7½ and 7⅝, but even the large sizes of other helmets pressed painfully on my temples.

The 910 is the only one that’s ever fit me right. Not the cheapest brain bucket for a weekend warrior like me, but worth every penny for the comfort and protection. It has multi-density foam pads and gel-filled cushions that (presumably) absorb a lot more impact.

I’ve taken a couple of moderate shots to the head with no ill effects, other than a tendency to ramble incoherently in online product reviews.

I’ll start out by saying that this is the best fitting helmet I have ever worn. The 3D printed mesh wraps around and cushions my head perfectly. I would give it 5 stars, but it could use some slight improvements.

Since it’s an all plastic liner with tiny hexagon shaped holes, there is absolutely no sweat absorption. My sweat just drips down into my face. I had to switch from a bubble to a cage because of this as my sweat droplets would fling against my visor and cause vision distortion.

Even with the cage I’m consistently having to wipe down my face between (and during) shifts where I did not have to with prior helmets. I guess the foam type padding in other helmets have a bit of sweat absorption to prevent this, but that also probably means more weight so I digress.

I would suggest some sort of headband or something similar to supplement, particularly, if you wear a full visor. Also, the all plastic nature of the liner caused some initial irritation to my forehead, but after a dozen or so skates wearing it now I don’t seem to notice.

Didn’t want to spend this much on a helmet but maximum fit and protection were the main reasons I went this direction. It also looks sick in white with my navy and white gear. Tried the CCM 910 and it fit too round, have some negative space left around the back of my oval head.

Tried Bauer AKT 150 and, despite good fit, it felt like it was on my head rather than my head fitting in the helmet. Bauer helmets have a high crown compared to these CCM helmets which are flatter / rounder.

This bucket just hugs your head and there is little if any negative space. Also, I wear a small helmet and have trouble with cages fitting my long face. Paired this with a cheap Bauer Profile II in small and it fits great.

Really happy with this purchase. Some have complained that the nest material is a little less comfortable on the forehead and / or they seemed to sweat more on the face with it, but I did not notice any of this.

The comfort level of this helmet is second to none. Staff at my Pure Hockey was great – very patient with me as I worked through all of the combos to find the best fit.

So far we have gotten it home and fit her clear visor to the lid. I have been very interested in helmets for years and one complaint is they are built too stiff. They are built to protect you from a hit that is probably not going to happen, but you end up with a concussion from simply falling down.

My daughter was tripped in a game and out with mild symptoms, she just fell down. I really think the price of this helmet is insane but it is the first helmet I have ever (and I have bought probably 50 in my life) bought and been happy to buy.

Not pay for but to feel like I have a helmet that will do it’s job. I feel like I can’t give it 5 stars until she bonks her head, knowing her it’ll be a week.

I want to start out by saying that this helmet is very comfortable. I have zero issue with fit or comfort. I have had issues with the foam inside the helmet. The glue CCM uses to hold the little hexagon foam inserts is not cutting it.

they pop off and hang down. I had one helmet that I was lucky to have covered by warranty so it was replaced. However, my replacement along with my sons helmet does the exact same thing. I have to super glue them back in place almost weekly.

Very frustrating.

This helmet was purchased as an early Christmas present for my adult son. He is already using it while on-ice coaching minor hockey. He has always wore Bauer helmets since his youth playing minor hockey because he likes the safety, comfort, durability and appearance.

This helmet is no different.

This helmet fits great and is super light! I have a huge head and struggled to find a helmet big enough. With this helmets adjustability, I was able to get it to fit perfectly. I was only disappointed in the fact that this $310 helmet did not come with the button snaps necessary to secure my cage.

Otherwise it is stellar!!.

Been playing outdoor roller hockey for 20 years and have never been happy with how helmets fit my noggin. I generally prefer the fit of CCM helmets but my current large one just hurt my head too much by mid-game, despite having made all the available adjustments.

After ages searching for an extra-large helmet in person, I resorted to ordering this Bauer online, however reluctantly due to not being able to try it on. The fit isn’t perfect but at least it’s bigger — and doesn’t hurt my head!.

Tried several helmets for my kid that only resulted in headaches after being on the ice more than 30 minutes. The shape of this helmet and the fit system solved all the issues. Now, several hours of wear later, still good to go.

I own multiple Re-AKt helmets. I recently bought the 200 and returned it. I ordered a size small based on the sizing of the helmet. The sizing is incorrect. I measured the helmet and it was a full size smaller in diameter than specified.

My son could barely fit it on at the largest setting; his youth helmet was larger. I also found the helmet to be a bit heavy and bulky compared to our other Re-ack helmets. My son was coming from a youth helmet and I did not go up to a size as a medium would have been to heavy and bulky for his age.

I ended up buying a different Re-Akt helmet in size Small and it was light and lots of room to grow.

Bought this for my 7 year old. It’s somewhat adjustable but not as much as is needed. The under chin strap is too loose for him even at the most “tight” setting. This means he needs to have the facemask on to keep this on his head.

The straps from the facemask help keep the helmet on. They attach and I need to help him with getting it off as it’s not overly easy. Otherwise it’s a good helmet. The inside padding and adjustable helmet makes it easy to adjust to his head.

Reasonable price for the helmet as well.

This is a great helmet and the width adjustment that actually works is a nice advancement. That said, this model seems to run a little bigger than the Re-Akt 95, which my daughter had for a couple years but we just changed teams and therefore needed a new helmet.

The 95 was adjusted to about the middle of the adjustment range. After wearing the adult small Re-Akt 150 a few times we adjusted it smaller. then wore a few more times and adjusted it to the smallest setting.

She tells me she’d like it to get a little smaller still. Other than that it has great padding, great ventilation, and great adjustability. The sizing is tricky of course but she did try it on in the store and has been wearing her previous Re-Akt (same size) for three years so I’m dinging Bauer for inconsistent sizing by one star.

Pure Hockey was helpful in letting us try on a few different helmets right before they were closing.

This year is my sons first year going up boarding here in Utah. He’s a little bit of a princess when it comes to getting cold. The padding in this helmet is fantastic. Very very soft and I feel they will keep his ears warmer, aside from just a beanie.

The dial on the back makes it easy to tighten or loosen. Would suggest to other parents.

After buying a few different helmets for our kids (on sale, different brands, etc) the Zoom Jr is easily the best. Excellent build quality (resembles Smith’s higher-end adult helmets). removable ear muffs means we can use it in the summer too for biking etc.

Highly recommend.

I bought this a few months ago to avoid the dreaded gross rental helmets for my kids. I wanted something that could easily be adjusted by my 6 and 8 years old independently and would also last a few seasons.

This checked all the boxes. Would recommend and will buy again in the future!.

I’m writing this review simply because I tested this helmet where it actually matters, during a big crash, and it performed better than I could have hoped. I was doing about 40km/h when a rather large wombat decided to come running across the pathway I was on.

I tried to avoid it but long story short it ended in me going headfirst over the handlebars and the side of my helmet smashed into the ground before the rest of my body. It was a pretty harsh impact and for a second my vision went blurry as I took the hit, but if it weren’t for my memory of the event and the cuts and bruises on my legs and arms, I wouldn’t have known I hit my head 10 minutes later.

The foam was of course visibly smashed and the helmet is broken, but my head is fine and the helmet took the impact it was bought to save me from, so I couldn’t be happier. I can’t speak for or against the MIPS system, but I guess if it works, you don’t know it, so I’ll stick with MIPS in future and actually think I will be buying another one of these helmets so that I can get back out there, at least then I can ride knowing I’ve got good protection on.

As for fit and finish, it’s a very comfortable helmet, I’d say one of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn (and I have a rather large head fit so I can be picky with this, but the adjustability is easy enough to dial in).

It’s well vented and holds up well in heat, but I’ve also worn it this winter without any caps and it was perfectly fine in the cold too, assuming it’s not raining, in which case you will need either a cap or a more closed helmet.

Really can’t fault this one though, it may well have saved my life.

I’ve kind of got a thing for aquiring helmets. I have way more than I need. That being said, I’ve tried several different brands and price ranges. The Giro Agilis is the most comfortable helmet I’ve ever put on my head.

Second to none. I have a fairly large head (59cm) that is someone less than round (more oval) shaped and this helmet feels like it was custom made for my head. I don’t care much for how much helmets weigh as a few grams don’t affect me at all.

Helmet has great looks, MIPS protection, and fits like a glove at an affordable price point. This one checks all the boxes for me.

After I said goodbye to my 20 year old Bell helmet the other week, I shopped for a new helmet with MIPS feature, high visibility, and lots of scalp ventilation at a reasonable price. Enter the Giro Agilis MIPS helmet.

I did the comparison of various comparable helmets on the REI site, and the Giro Agilis kept rising to the top. I purchased it and knew from my first ride with this HI-VIS yellow beauty that I had made the right choice.

The fit adjustments were easy to do, and gave me a snug fit on my first ride. It is lightweight but solid, and the MIPS design is a feature I have confidence in. But the real surprise is in the ventilation afforded by the large number of vents.

Riding on hot days can be a real chore if there is no air flow. Not a problem with the Giro Agilis. My head and scalp remained cool, to such an extent that I kept riding even beyond the distance I had originally planned to do.

I would definitely buy the Giro Agilis again, and encourage you to give it consideration when you shop for your new helmet.

Bought this for my daughter, Hot pink with penguins and she loved it. Priced out and did research on many helmets and by far this was the best deal! Most of the other helmets, of the same quality, I looked at were comparable in price or more expensive, but did not come with goggles.

The google fit well and integrate with the helmet well. Overall quality is great. Just asked my daughter to add to this review, she says “it was really good and I liked it a lot” She is 5 1/2 with a larger head size and the XS is a good fit with room to grow.

The quick adjustment on the back is key feature for any helmet you look to purchase Definitely recommend this helmet and will be buying my son one next season.

Great fit, and sturdy! My toddler daughter learning to ski has made good use of this helmet. Plenty of spills on the front lawn, and she hasn’t been phased. Don’t need a hat under it either.

Bought this helmet for my son who just started snowboarding. It’s comfortable and serves its purpose. Would recommend.

I ride around on a jump bike and an electric skateboard. I felt I needed a full face helmet to help with my confidence and to alleviate any worries about potential head trauma. The item arrived free of additional charge within a few days.

The helmet was in a fancy bag, inside a fancy(ish) box inside a standard box. The helmet size is perfect, the guide to sizing was really easy to follow. The helmet looks really cool and provides excellent visibility.

I look forward to being less at risk of receiving brain damage when I fall/crash.

I call full face helmets cheap dental insurance. Like insurance I haven’t had to use mine but this helmet checks off all the right boxes in my dental plan. It is light with a snug comfortable fit. The helmet is well ventilated but I strap it to my pack for the climb up the hill.

The peak works great shielding the sun from my eyes and the descent and my goggles fit well. A great helmet at a great price. I have an e gravel bike coming and may give this helmet a test on road as well as trail.

I love the matte finish and all the details this lid has.

Not the lightest, not the best vented, but certainly amazing value and durability for little shredders that like to use their head for braking. Would recommend this to anyone getting their kids started on consequential riding.

Only drawback is the double-D buckle which is hard to use for the little ones – a traditional plastic buckle or Fidlock magnetic buckle would make all of the difference here.

Would buy again. Helmet was perfect for my 11 yo son who skates a handful of times a year. It is really nice that it adjusts to the perfect fit and can grow with him a bit. We had the same helmet in a smaller size since he was 4 that he finally grew out of.

The mesh mask transferred over.

Got a x-small for my 4 year old. He wears it every time he has his skates on, and sometimes just while playing in the living room. Doesn’t mind it, so it must be comfortable. Good quality, tool free size adjustment.

I bought 2 two mediums for different head sizes and both fit very well because of the adjuster at the back, the straps alter well to length of face so a medium will suit both male/female from a 58-60cm head.

The comfort from the MIPS is great, like cushioning. Although slightly bulkier than a normal mtb helmet, especially with the longer visor, it feels light, is not too hot and is the most comfortable helmet I have worn.

A bargain sale price made it a great purchase.

My 1st MTB helmet (always had road helmets previously for XC racing – but I’m too old for that carry on now 🙂 ) This helmet looks the part if nothing else. Cameo shell with the hi-viz yellow is a head turner.

Was toying with the thought of going for a Medium as my head measurement was only 0. 5 cm bigger than the size stated (56 – 58), but went for Large. It does seem bulky (compared to my previous XC helmet), but it is an MTB helmet after all.

Comfortable and light and will just take a bit of getting used to. Find another MIPS helmet with this style and comfort for under £70. no. you wont. Top buy.

Had a few rides now and it is a well made helmet. Fit’s my round skull well, is reasonably light weight and the fit adjuster works well. A light attachment for night riding fits well to the top and beneath the MIPS system.

This is a very safe mask. The gel packs inside the helmet give added cushion to the face area. The contour of the helmet feels as if this was custom made. Now i tested this helmet and i was giving myself donkey punches all over the mask.

Though i knew that i was hitting myself, I honestly did not feel the harsh impact or the rattle that some masks have. In the end, I bought this for my son (we have the same hat size ). This purchase was never intended for me and i made sure that my son would be fully protected.

He currently plays in the U15 age group where the shots are harder. I would recommend this helmet. Only negative is that I purchased this online, and my Triangle Points could not be redeemed because for whatever reason the website is not constructed to do so.

I would have had to bring this back to pro hockey life, return it, then make the purchase again. Its a pricey mask but well worth it.

I have been using the previous version of this helmet for 4-5 yrs (Reebok 5K Helmet) until the internal pads started to fall off. This helmet is very comfortable and the tool-less adjustment makes it very easy to adjust mid-game if required.

Other helmets I tried when looking for a replacement did not fit as well as this one has and am use to wearing. Upon research this one tends to fit better for an oval head shape.

I bought this helmet in youth size for my 4 and 6yr old. Their head size was 20″ which according to the measurements should fit. Even on the biggest adjustment it was too tight. I wonder if that’s why it was on clearance as the next size up (junior) was not on sale.

Otherwise the quality looks great. I wouldn’t recommend buying online or before you try.

She looks great in her Bauer helmet. She is a 4 year old with a lot of enthusiasm, and this helmet fits perfectly, has a good amount of the lighter, denser padding on the inside, like a bike helmet, so I know she is good out on the pavement, and good out on the ice.

It comes without a cage, but Bauer sells a good one through Pure Hockey. Good starter helmet.

Good beginners helmet, I got it for my son who is 3 years old and was able to adjust it to fit him perfectly, only think I wish I had now was the face shield just nervous if he falls he will strike his chin.

I bought this helmet because it’s one of the few MIPS helmets certified for both summer (biking) and winter use, which was important to me knowing that material properties can change based on temperature and a helmet that’s safe in one season may not be as effective in another.

It’s really nice to just have one helmet I can use for all seasons instead of keeping multiple around. Pros: – Extremely comfortable – vast improvement over any other helmet I’ve owned. – The actual inside of the helmet can adjust sizes, and in each size there’s some elastic stretch too.

Due to this it accommodates changes in hairstyle or wearing a beanie/headstock underneath very easily. – All-season certification Cons?: – It’s hard to say this is a con becasue I expected it by looking at it, but there’s not as much venting as a dedicated summer helmet.

I am used to skateboard style helmets and it’s about the same as those, but it won’t breathe like a bike helmet so don’t expect that. I live in Texas and I still use it though. – The ear flaps are a little difficult to remove.

It felt like I was going to break them but then they popped out. Could be a bit easier to remove. Overall, super comfortable and a great value, especially considering the alternative of owning 2-3 different helmets for various seasons/activities.

Overall, highly recommend.

Main thing to know with the new MIPS helmets is how it may affect your size. I’m in the upper end of the medium size range and have worn a medium (non MIPS) Smith Holt helmet for a long time. The Medium MIPS was too small for me so I had to move up to the large.

I’ve seen in various reviews and from support at Smith that the MIPS system (depending on how it’s added to an existing helmet) can make the helmet a bit more snug which makes sense when you see how the MIPS works.

That said if you have the opportunity to try one on at a local shop before buying, I’d recommend it. The Maze is definitely an upgrade from the Smith Holt. The ear pads and chinstrap guard on the Maze are softer and thicker, and removable if you go with the beanie/under goggle style.

The overall helmet shell is similar with some additional rubberized trim on the underside of the brim of the helmet over the foam. The overall look is clean with minimal vents. The goggle strap lock is fairly thin compared to some of the thicker, wider ones and it’s removable if needed.

I’d definitely recommend this helmet, but again if you can try one on beforehand that may help you dial in your size so you can order with confidence and avoid any returns due to fit.

Simple and sleek. Nothing too disappointing. My wife bought a different, cool looking helmet with more “flare”, but this will get the job done. While my wife was acquiring her balance like a child learning to control their head when walking, I was able to hit the slopes right away so it paid off.

Very light weight helmet. Had to get a new thinner ski hood in order for it to fit under the helmet. Seems like it may run the slightest bit small, but take that with a grain of salt. My head diameter was on the greater side of the sizing intervals.
