Best History Books For Kids (2024 Updated)

Great unbiased info. We’re using it as a history book for our intellectually delayed son. He’s using it to learn how to take notes as well. Good graphics mixed with well divided and thorough info.

Is Christmas gift for child, but reviewed it and think it looks very interesting.

We have just moved to Brooklyn directly from a European city where the black community is a minority and so my kids were asking many questions about racial equality and the history behind different skin tones.

This book is so wonderful! Even for ourselves to learn about a history that was not taught in our schools back home. I am very happy to have bought this book.

Full of SO many great talking points, vocabulary worth exploring, and black leaders and individuals that warrant acknowledgement and remembering. And not the same names that have been long remembered and honored.

Many of those are there, but this book dives deeper into black history than most children’s books, especially anything written a generation ago.

Being a historian myself, I was looking for an introductory history book for my fourth grader and this one was a great find! It’s very well written (the author read the drafts aloud to his fiance and this really added to the quality).

It’s dynamic, the chapters are short, and it introduces a difficult concept of historical chronology in a very friendly and fun way. True, it was written in a different age for a slightly different readership, raised on the Biblical stories and intimately familiar with the classical text such as the Iliad and Odyssey.

Contemporary kids might not pick up on some of the references the author makes, but it may open a conversation between you and your child and create a greater learning experience. When we discuss the chapters with my son, we sometimes end up searching for images on the Internet or watching videos (the illustrations are not this book’s strongest point).

This book will surely create a foundation for your child’s future explorations of history. Don’t wait for too long though, it might be too light on detail for a smart kid over ten.

I bought this product to have a quick look at time lines in history. Knowing it was also written for children, I found the book interesting and read some to my 12 year old son. It kept him still which is quite an achievement and left him waiting to hear more.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. It should be a part of the curriculum in high schools! Beautifully written and completely captivating. The book I believe is aimed at younger children, but I can confidently say it would be a pleasure to read at any age.

Starting at the beginning and carrying the reader right through to the present, the author turns our own History into a magical, adventurous tale that you will not be able to put down.

My 7 year old daughter is loving reading these! She is insisting on reading them in historical order and she reads them to her younger brother. They are history mad having got into it via Horrible Histories during lock down! A great independent activity for her, which is very welcome at present!.

Usborme consistently pride books which are perfectly suited to children. They are literate, accessible and easy to read. Illustrations are relevant and colourful with much appeal to the reader.

I bought this book for my grandson. He enjoys reading it very much. Fun to look/read, easy to use, and it is useful. Good quick reference.

The book is like new. The content is easily readable with a ton of facts packed into a one-page biography of each person! This is a perfect book to introduce important historical and current figures to students in grades 3-7.

The best part of the book is that suggestions are given in the last few pages of where to look for more information (internet searches, related books, articles to read, videos to watch, etc. ) I have donated this book to the fourth grade classrooms at our school.

They do a yearly unit on famous world figures, presenting to the student body by dressing as these characters and sharing their great accomplishments. Their library of possibilities has grown wonderfully with this book!.

I live in Alabama where many outside of our state question whether or not we learned anything from the Civil Rights Movement. I work one block away from the Civil Rights Museum. I see the statues throughout Birmingham and want my nieces and nephews to understand the rich and hard history of our state.

This book seemed like a great first step to introducing kids the ages of 4, 6, & 9 to Black History. It has not disappointed me. I even took this book to work to read during my lunch break and many co-workers grabbed it off of my desk to read on their own breaks.

This book is not meant for one skin color. It is quite fascinating for all races.

This book is a great introduction to know and unknown figures and contributions from the black/POC community. My kids love digging deeper and researching people that they identify with or are interested in most.

The awareness this book brings also has given our family an opportunity research together and I feel like I’m learning almost as much as my kids!.

I purchased this book as a gift for a Christmas book exchange. I remembered reading or watching the story of Ferdinand as a kid. The price was right and shipping was free from the seller! Can’t get better than that.

Overall the story was what I remembered, a sweet little bull who loves peaceful days and “smelling the roses. ” The part I forgot about was the book describing in generalities some of the implements used to provoke bulls during bullfights.

I would say that most of the story is great for kids, but you may want to share this with older children. Nice thin paperback book, can’t be more than 20 pages. It was super popular with the adults (20-30yrs) at my Christmas party–I think we all were a bit nostalgic.

A classic story done right. This book is fantastic and is a go to gift for any baby shower. I wish it didn’t have the plug for the cartoon movie version on the cover. I would prefer the classic cover, but this price is right!.

We love Ferdinand. This was a special story my husband and daughter have always read together since she has been a baby. We came across this adorable bundle and had to have it. We signed the inside cover for my daughter and dated it so she can have this book with her for many years to come.

Our original copy was paper back so I love having the hard cover copy and the plush is simply adorable!.

Well, this book was a nice surprise! Whenever you want to learn about something you think you don’t know anything about, it’s sometimes good to start with a children’s book on the subject. I had never heard of a world history text for youngsters of elementary age before.

I sent a copy (not found on eBay) to my young grandchildren. But before I sent it, I looked at it myself. The narration was simple and reader-friendly without being wimpy – and I found myself learning things about world history that I vaguely had heard of but never really had a handle on! Wasn’t I supposed to have learned this stuff long ago in school? Maybe I wasn’t taught it – or maybe I didn’t care to learn it.

It might have been both. I became so interested in the basics of world history that I bought a copy on eBay for myself. It’s a little like learning to read – you discover things that were only hints in your brain before.

The writing is very clear and elementary-level reader-friendly. It was written by V. M. Hillyer, the guiding light of the Calvert School of Maryland, whose home education system was one of the first homeschooling systems in the country.

This book was written long ago and apparently updated in several aspects, and some people would think it’s old-fashioned; I think it’sfine. The lesson? Old dogs can learn new tricks! So can young children!.

I just started reading this to my 8 and 7 year old for history. We love it so much! Short stories that don’t lose my boys attention that are written in simple English. A big win!

As a home educating mother to 4, my 7 and 5 year old girls are able to listen to this informative, well written history book, and I am learning so much as I read too. Packed with interesting facts and a great little timeline at the front and little sketches through, its such a good way to inspire children to look into history.

In all my life, I had never heard about them and searched the Internet and was so amazed at what was there – in plain sight! And they are all over the world! God is so amazingly AWESOME – as Psalms 92 reads – I will sing for joy at the works of Thy hands – How great are Thy works, o LORD!.

IšverstiShow in original languageThis book is awesome! It’s not just for children because it contains lots of interesting information about the Creation and our awesome Creator. I’m only about 1/4 into the book but it is certainly capturing my attention.

I’m not currently working with any children because I attend a very small church which, like many churches, shrunk because of the pandemic. However, I’m hoping to return to my volunteer work at a local middle school this fall.

One of the things that I appreciate about the book is that it will appeal to a wide age range. I’m certain that my middle school students well enjoy it as much as I do!.

The content is meaty and rich in prompting deep, holy conversations. The illustrations are delightfully whimsical!.

This is a spectacular book for kids(& adults). The book is beautifully illustrated, every page is extraordinary, they skimped on nothing making this book. There are also magnificent photographs from museums & galleries.

The history is welltold & correct, the concept of the travel with Liberty the talking horse is great, & the book is engaging and interesting thru out. Every kid should have these fine, informative, easy reading books.

They’ll learn so much & enjoy the experience! I believe they’ll by need much prompting once started to read.

The author consulted primary sources to develop a kid-friendly, fact-packed historical narrative of the Puritains’ voyage from Great Britain to the New World to enjoy religious liberty and begin a new existence.

The writing style is light but informative. The talking horse character adds levity and maintains reader interest.

Nice book. Well written. Of course everyone knows this. It is easy to read and factual. I had a first grader who is a wonderful reader. Her favorite book so far was Jack London’s “Call of the Wild. ” She couldn’t put that down.

She read straight through this one too and loved it. She had many questions because although she can read well and can even use a dictionary (both book and on line) the overarching comparison of collective work and common gain versus individual work and individual gain needed some explaining.

But she got the part about how hard these people worked just to find a place to settle and how difficult the conditions were. She doesn’t expect to come to a country and have the world handed to her.

We even use that today with the illegals being given free food free housing free medical care and all they have to do is break our laws to get that stuff. My now second grader gets it. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s pet.

Just like Buck (for those who haven’t read Call of the Wild). She wonders why they are not just delivered home to their parents or to whom was taking care of them. She read the story of parents sending the kids to their relatives who already sneeked into the country.

Her comment is “isn’t it better the kids be with their mom and dad where they grew up?” Smart girl. She would have survived with the pilgrams.

This is a great collection of stories at an incredible price! I agree with reviews that I have seen elsewhere that the photos are small/compressed compared to the individual books themselves, but for our family, we don’t really notice as we’re reading the stories.

For the stories that I am familiar with, the author seems to have done an excellent job at including as much as they possibly could into a book that you are still able to hold in one hand. Our reading times are a “gather in close” time, so the smaller version of the pictures really do not take away any magic from story time.

We also love the variety of stories presented, as well as the ability to take a whole library of books on the road with ease!.

For bilingual couple this book is an investment for you child or children to learn new language. 3 books in one is a steal, there’s French-English-Spanish version for parents who speak French fluently and Spanish.

This book is translated in so many different languages and the story is mesmerized. I brought it for my goddaughter and my son. So, parents check out and tell me your point for view regarding the Cat, the Fish and the Waiter.

Book was in great condition as described. Wonderful collection of short stories I loved as a child, with stories for different age ranges, and with various storytelling styles. I would be very shocked if there wasn’t at least a good handful of stories that your child would adore.

My mother’s previous copy was damaged from aging, so I bought her this one as a surprise. She was very touched and happy to look back on the stories.
