20 Best Heavy Duty Dog Leash (2023 Updated)

Bought for large boxer puppy, who should grow into a large adult boxer. Wanted a 6 foot leash with a traffic length handle to help keep him under control when necessary. This works about perfect. Both handles are slightly padded and comfortable.

The length for traffic leash is exactly right. The color scheme is also very attractive for a good sized dog. I’m sure this leash would be durable enough for virtually any medium to extra large breed of dog.

Obviously I am very pleased with this purchase, and highly recommend it to you if you are looking for a heavy duty and versatile leash to use in properly training and walking your dog.

Good for my Great Dane x Rottweiler as this lead has not broken and is strong. Both leads come in handy and it looks good as well! Easy transaction and fast delivery. I have been a long time buyer on Catch and rarely have had major problems and any proble.

When I take my 120# Dane for a walk, it’s a combination of aerobics and isometrics. We walk. She stops to smell (everything). I pull and then we walk again until she stops again. Repeat. This leash is strong and flexible.

The leash is very strong and well made. It is a very pretty purple color. Unfortunately, It is too heavy to use when walking my puppy. I plan to return the leash. I am hoping to find a leash that is more appropriate for walking a 12 pound puppy.

This is a great utility leash with a nice back side clip providing several options for wear. I use it as a standard 6’ grab and go but often turn it into a cross body over the shoulder which is great when I need extra hands to carry groceries or kids.

In a pinch I use in belt mode for short runs. The daisy chain stitching provides plenty of comfortable fit options for me. (6’1” with 36” waist). The quality is good so far (one month in) and I have grown confident in using it as a tie off for short periods as long as I’m present such as open garage situation.

My one wish is that the reflective ribbing would go end to end, it is only on the tail half, away from the collar clip.

My dog isn’t a huge puller, but when I need to hold tight on tug her in, this leash is very rough on my hand and the rope is very thin/narrow. I basically have gotten rope burn. Maybe I should have exchanged for larger size, but I didn’t want to spend the money on shipping and returns when this was already a kind of expensive leash.

Despite the rope being smaller than expected, quality still seems great, it’s just not working out for me and my dog who occasionally pulls really hard when she gets really excited by another dog or the stray tissue.

Love the collar we got though, this leash is just not for us. Will probably donate to local rescue.

The leash is great. Looks beautiful with his harness. Perfect length. Good control. The carabiner doesn’t rotate which causes the leash to coil awkwardly. But my doggo is still just a puppy and sometimes chews on his leash or tries to play tug.

The reflective thread just doesn’t hold up to any kind of chewing playful or otherwise. It breaks easily and then is very sharp to the touch, not sure what it is made out of. This is unfortunate because I think it will affect the length of time we’re able to keep this leash for.

I am a degreed veterinary nurse and used these at our clinic for my own hand comfort as well as their security. Several of my coworkers loved the leashes too. I still use them for my personal dogs. Over the years, we’ve lost two leashes and one got chewed on by a puppy.

This leash has a newer more secure design yet is the same reliable JAC leash I still love. What I’d REALLY love is another JAC with a thinner cord for smaller dogs – wouldn’t that be great! My field-bred Lab is small and that would suit her neck much better, though the current JAC works for her and my larger Chessie.

I had this leash for 10 days. My dog is 4 months old and weighs 25 lbs, but is very strong. She was playing with a little girl in a store and the leash broke. The part that attached to the color just snapped.

The dog was about 5 feet from the exit and made a beeline for it. Thankfully she was a little scared and came back to me. I grabbed her with another customer. It was very scary. This leash is very inexpensive for a reason.

I purchased this leash for my chihuahua. I have been looking in stores and the only ones found are either 1 inch wide or 4 ft long. It is almost impossible to find a 6 ft long leash with 3/4 inch width.

I am used to using this size and after looking for a long time I found them on Chewy. They are well made also.

I purchased one of the harness leather dog leashes in it’s 1 inch configuration. I’m not sure if Ray Allen makes a heavier duty leash in leather than this one. This dog leash reminds me of the old heavy German dog leashes I used when I was younger.

I am a active duty soldier and I use this lead for a Young East German Shepherd that accompanies me on long foot marches both on and off military training grounds. Yes when you receive this leash it will be a little stiff and hard but remember when purchasing high-quality leather products that is exactly what you want it will break in overtime and be nice.

Love the new leash. Great quality but light enough that the dog does not feel like he is weighted down. The woven ends make it so much better as my dog likes to hold the lower end and the one that had stitches at the end fell apart from, there is not a chance of this happening.

So worth the money I paid.

The last leather leash we purchased lasted forever, so we came to you when we needed another. This leather is barely good enough to use for horse reigns. We have it now, so it is what it is. But, not happy with that or the bungy collar we purchased.

The hardware on our old leash failed and our headstrong 110 lb. dog kept going as soon as he realized he was no longer attached. Fortunately, he stopped to see why no one was there and we were able to call him back.

This new leash is outstanding – quality thick leather lead with very heavy rivets and brass clasp which should hold the leash together for a very long time. Couldn’t be happier with this!.

I was disappointed that the leash didn’t have beveled or rounded edges. The leash is not at all comfortable to hold. Perhaps with a thinner leash it wouldn’t be as noticeable however my last leash which was thinner was rounded on the edge.

Heavy duty, well made dog leash, I have a large Akita that it works well on.

I really wanted to love this leash, I’ve had it in my cart for months but finally decided to get it with a coupon i had. At 50$ its quite pricey but it is very well made and sturdy. Its got a very pretty shiny satiny embossed finish to it that I was not expecting.

I assumed it was the typical nylon leash material. The handle is very comfortable too. I like the fact is adjustable too. My only gripe is that while I bought the small size, I feel it is too big. The carabiner is pretty big although it is lightweight.

It also scratches VERY easily! My looks quite used after only one walk. I think this would be a great leash for a medium sized dog.

There are leashes and then there is gear, the kind of gear you take pleasure in using because it is so well made, so thoughtful. Although I use my hands occasionally to redirect my 19kg / 42lb medium height dog, most of the time it’s a completely relaxed hands free experience with the 4’ lead. Longer would be too much downtown, as it would allow him to roam towards street garbage and other distractions a bit too freely, but I can easily adjust the keash a couple of feet longer if we’re in a park.

Combines well with the hands free waist belt.

This is my second Blueberry leash (mine is neon green to match my pooch’s collar). I think the quality is quite good, but I did have a strange thing happen with my last one. After a few years – maybe 3 – a part of the metal connector at the end of the leash broke off.

It was the little metal nub that opens and closes the connector. Leash and collar have worn very well. except for the metal part. And the metal seems fairly heavy-duty. Go figure. I’m going with: This is a fluke (unless I hear of similar problems people might have had.

I ordered this leash in orange to go with a new harness I had bought for my Pekingese. It is not easy to find an orange leash for a 10 pound puppy, so I had to look for one. After reviewing several different orange leashes, I ordered this one.

It did not disappointment! It is very nice, just the right size, and I love the shade of orange. It also arrived very quickly!.

I LOVED this leash sooo much that even though 2 broke on me because of my dogs tenacity, I went and bought 2 more. The price can’t b beat that’s for sure. It’s made of thick nylon and it’s very durable EXCEPT the rubber part you’re supposed to hold to help your grasp with a puller.

My 10 month old pup pulled the things right off. To be fair, it wouldnt take much because it’s rubber sewn into thick nylon. Easily rips off. if you don’t mind that part ripping off within your first walk or two, by all means the leash is nice and thick and so far durable.

If you’re looking for something to help you with a strong puller, expecting the rubber portion to help you, this is not the leash for you. Chewy is absolutely excellent to order from and by far their customer service has been outstanding! For chewy, they deserve 5 stars without issue.

It’s perfect for the times you know you’ll need your pup short leashed. Comfy grip and well made this is our go-to for attending busy outdoor events or hot spots with our guy, Charlie (70 lb loveable mutt).

He’s usually very calm in crowds but he’s an intense squirrel enthusiast with accompanying vocals to boot, so we like having the peace of mind that he can’t have that extra 4 ft of leash to pull on if he spots a squirrel in a public space here in DC.

When he does spot his beloved/loathed squirrels we have much more control over his pulling with this leash. We use an Easy Walk harness and with Charlie’s height we do find it a bit hard to keep this leash on the appropriate side, more so than his 4ft or 6ft leashes – but that’s the only issue we have!.

Loving this short leash! I have 4 very tall Black Russian Terriers. They range in ages from 5 months to 6 years and 95-140 pounds. This short leash is sturdy, comfortable and plenty long enough for my very tall K9’s.

The rubber hand grip is super comfortable for long walks and the 4-foot range is plenty big enough for my breed. In contrast to other reviews, my dogs do not treat the rubber grip like a chew toy (maybe because I don’t allow it).

I just got this leash. My Belgian malinois pup has already tried to chew on it a few times. She does not like it when I put her on a leash. I’m pretty good about making sure she doesn’t bite through her leash.

On the other hand, My husband and other family members I have asked to care for her are not the best at keeping a close eye on her. Due to that, I’ve been through a few leashes with her. This one is pretty much indistructable.

I am able to easily walk her now. We go on walks everyday. she no longer stops in the middle of the walk to chew on her leash. It’s a very durable leash and it’s a perfect size for us. I just slide my arm inside the handle and hold the chain when I want her to be closer.

I bought this leash around fall of last year, and it has now gotten too worn out to be used any longer. When on walks, my dog still manages to grab the handle, so now the stitching is coming apart, to the point where the handle is almost going to fall off of the chain.

Other than that, it is still a great chain leash, considering my dog would chew all of her nylon leashes. The red handle on the leash matches her harness and collar, and is nicely padded for the dog owner’s comfort.

The chain part is great quality, it did not rust or have any issues. I got the same leash again today, so hopefully this one will last a very long time.

My dog is big on chewing, so I originally bought this leash after my pup kept chewing through his old ones if I looked away for even a second. Since then, I’ve had no problems and he also seems to have taken to the noise it makes and looks forward to me picking it up.

I love these leashes! I have 4 large dogs and can/will walk the block with them all at once. They are not super well-trained, so I have a habit of not using the handle and just wrapping two leashes around each hand – easier to keep leashes untangled as they explore all over! But the padding and the way the leash is made is so much easier on my hands than cheaper/smaller/thinner leashes.

The first set of 4 I bought have held up at least 3 years now. I am just now coming back to replace a couple just because. no real reason! Keeping the old ones as backups or for when they go stay with “the babysitter.

Have been searching for a simple reflective leash less than 1” width for some time. Seems like it should be easy to find but it’s not. Pros: very reflective on one side. Lightweight does not weigh down my dog.

Cons: only reflective on one side which doesn’t make sense, traffic can come from all directions. Handle is huge and is constantly falling off my hand, measured it against another leash and it is definitely a bigger loop.

There is nowhere to clip on the leash if you need to tie the dog for a few minutes, the clasp is too small to clip to the handle.

I love the padded handle on this lead. It’s very comfortable. Like other reviewers I wish the reflective tape was on both sides of the lead because half the time the reflective side isn’t facing the right way to reflect.

That’s why it only got 4 stars. I have a very tall Chesapeake so it’s the perfect length for him. He still gets it wrapped under his foreleg if I don’t pay attention. If he were any shorter it would drag on the ground all the time.

Good weight material that will hold up for many walks to come!.

Kong is an excellent product, built to last. The traffic leash is perfect for walking my dog who is quite strong and being to put her on what I call the short leash (traffic handle) keeps her under control is congested places.

I would recommend this leash for all dogs who are walked a lot in congested areas.

Leashes are very good quality. Not easy to rip. Really well made heavy duty. Dogs Enjoy this toy. I bought this toy at pet smart. Great value. Not that pricey. I would recommend this toy to people with bigger dogs.

I just bought the green, blue and purple ones for my three dogs (two labs and a German Shepard) They are comfortable to hold with the wide grip. My dogs generally do not pull but when they do, this leash is easy on everyone and I’m not worried about it being uncomfortable for them.

They are thick and durable and I am sure they will last awhile. We also got the matching collars for them. First collars and leashes that have not been chewed up or through so yay for that!.

Bought both the collar and leash for out 80lb. Shepard Husky mix. Thought because it was a Carhartt product it would be well made and reliable. Last night while walking Bear the clasp on the leash broke and he took off.

I wish I could give it a great review. I purchased this item about a week ago and it was working well. I put it on my 100 lb dog and dropped the leash on the floor to put my shoes on. The dog stepped on the gated clip and it became lodged in the flesh between his toes on his front foot.

At first, I couldn’t get it off because as I pulled on it, it became tighter. My poor dog was crying and growling at me as I tried to help him. I didn’t have to resort to using a Dremel to cut it off, but that was my next move.

I am returning it to the store where I purchased it. Please consider changing the clip at that end.

Good quality as expected of Carhartt. Very functional with looping options for wearing over shoulder during off leash and easy temporary tie off. Only issue is with clasp: supposed to be operational with gloves, but found it awkward and counterintuitive even with bare hands.

I’m fairly picky about leashes. I’ve probably gone through 10+ styles and looked through countless more at local pet shops. I have dogs who are small/medium sized but occasionally pull like wild horses.

Most leashes have something “wrong” with them for my dogs – the clasps are too heavy for their size, the clasps are too dainty and likely to break under pressure, the leash is too thick/thin/delicate/ugly/imbalanced/etc.

Mendota leashes are the only ones I’ve found that feel “just right” from the thin, but strong, colorful leash length to the lightweight but strong clasp. Finding all this in two leash sizes, both a 4 and 6 foot leash length was the cincher for me (as the vast majority of 4 foot leashes are absolutely hideous).

The 4 feet length leash was our default when we lived in midtown Manhattan. We’ve since moved to suburbia so they’ve been upgraded to 6 feet, but I still have the 4 foot leash handy and highly recommend it as a back-up/secondary leash for everyone occasionally lets their dog tag along to high traffic areas.

I purchased a leash from this brand seeeveral years ago, and I was extremely satisfied. The quality was amazing, and I just loved it. I’ve used it daily for years, and it still looks like the day I bought it, not an ounce of wear n tear on it.

So I decided to buy three more for my three new puppies. I just received the package today, and immediately noticed the difference in quality. The ring on the old one is metal and the rope feels solid.

These new ones have a cheap plastic ring and the silver paint is already peeling and I haven’t even used them yet. The rope is also cheaper. I know I can just buy some metal rings and replace the plastic ones myself, but I expected the same quality, especially with the new ones being more expensive.

This leash is the answer to my prayers! I have a dog, Bailey, who pulled something awful when I tried to walk him! He’s very strong and I was afraid he would pull me out in the road. Ive tried different methods such as a head halter, a trainer, martingale collar, chest halter and none of them worked for me.

Bailey is very headstrong and I just couldn’t walk with him safely. So, as a last resort, I thought I’d try this slip leash. So, now we’re both happy! He’s got tons of energy and he needed to be walked but I didn’t think this would work either but to my surprise, it’s perfect.

When it’s used correctly, there is no “choking” and no damage whatsoever of his throat. He just enjoys his walk without all the pulling drama and so do I! We walk a few miles and I don’t have to worry he will drag me.

Once he got used to it, which took hardly any time at all for him, he walks right by my side and I love walking with him!.

Bought this leash hoping it would work for our two chihuahua and chinese crested dogs. Sadly it’s a bit too big and bulky for them. The quality of the leash is good and feels great in hand, but the medium/large size is for dogs probably 35lbs.

& over. It’s got some weight to it. Also the connection where the two leashes meet also does not have that swivel piece that allows the dogs to move freely and not get tangled onto each other. For these reasons I would not recommend this leash.

I have a standard and a miniature poodles, I bought this so I could walk them at the same time without having to stop and untangle them or me from the leashes. I was not sure if this would work since there is a large difference in their sizes.

The sections of the leash are joined with a metal ring. This really helps, if one dog pulls, the other dog isn’t pulled along and the force goes to the person holding the leash. I can pick up the small dog and still have a good sized leash to walk the larger dog.

The leash is thick and sturdy. A great buy!.

This is a sturdy leash. I’ve been trying to teach our puppy to walk with our adult dog, and he’s getting there. This leash is so sturdy and well made. It almost makes it so my puppy has to follow along with our other dog, since it’s not too long.

Once he gets there, this is going to be fun for all of us.

I purchased 3 of these leashes for each of my dogs. This leash is so awesome for so many reasons. Here is my list of the benefits of this product. – Can adjust to 3 different lengths. – Great for when you take your dog off leash as it easily clips around your shoulder and chest, so you’re not carrying leashes.

– If you have multiple dogs it makes walking them easier because you can have control with adjusting leash length and easily grabbing the leash handle. – Can clip 2 dogs together on 1 leash. – lightweight, but strong.

The only con i have experienced is one of the positions that leash says you can do (hands-free leash across chest) makes the leash too short for my low rider beagles. There’s just not enough leash to reach them, and i am only 5’4″.

Our dog Chewie (appropriately named) chewed through it in seconds. I know they arent designed to be chewed on but this material was really thin. Also if you are not a twig and intend to wear it around your waist your dog will be on top of you the whole time.

I needed a police style leash to replace a leather one which was stolen. I liked how this one looks and it had all the proper hardware. I should have read a little closer because the webbing is really lightweight and not heavy enough for a 60 pound young dog.

It’s more the weight I would use on a dog no heavier than 30 pounds unless it was really well trained. The hardware seems to be reasonably well made. I have not used it so I do not know how it would hold up.

I will likely buy some webbing and use the hardware on a leash I make myself.

Like the description says the leash is made of soft rubber. This is great for hiking in the great outdoors and in the rain, but doesn’t work out so when when used with young dogs new to the leash. In seven days my 10 week old puppy has already taken chunks out of the leash and put bite marks in the lower portion just from catching it in her mouth during our walks.

Wilderdog is obviously aware of this potential problem as the warranty explicitly states “No Chewing!”.

I’ve always been using a leather leash because I find myself confortabile with it and it has a good grip, but in the outdoor it gets dirty. In this waterproof leash I find all the good qualities of a leather one, plus when it gets dirty it can be washed simply.

It has become quickly a top leash for me. I wish it was longer, It would be perfect.
