20 Best Handheld Carbon Monoxide Detector (2023 Updated)

Works great, very simple to unbox and then have functional. The upside down battery and clear pull tab combo threw me for a bit if a loop lol 15 mins of fidgeting from delivery to on the wall. Good good stuff! My dad got it a little wet before I got it in the wall, just on the bottom but it tested just fine even after a few drops of water.

This model detector was manufactured in 2012. A 9-volt battery is included, but the battery (now about 9 years old) was corroded and unusable. The detector works fine; just expect to supply your own 9-volt battery.

Easy to install and I assume it will work. We have others like this and they are fine. The only downside is that it requires battery replacement. I’m assuming it will beep when this is needed.

The OTAO screen protector for my Galaxy S8 is perfect. It is super easy to install with the accessories that are included in the package. The protector is curved slightly so you don’t have an issue with air bubbles, but it is also very sensitive to your touch.

I put one on my wife’s phone as well. They are very durable.

The device I got was almost one year past its printed March 2020 build date, so one year less service time before the sensor expires. The box says “7 year limited warranty” and “replace alarm 84 months after installation” but it had been sitting on a warehouse shelf for 11 months.

If I’d bought this from a brick and mortar store, I could have opened the box and read the build date stamp and found a fresher one.

Seems the answer for detecting CO2. With battery is ready at all times. Display gives indication of severity of issue. Wanting 20 feet from furnace/laundry is hard to do in our small house. The old one was less than 20 feet away.

(It simply said it needed to be replaced – 4 beeps) Didn’t see in all those fine-print directions what levels are safe. [. 5 – 5 ppm I found on line. ].

How do I trust an alarm that sounds of exactly at 9pm every night for one minute. It is a slow to fast beep. The display shows only that the batteries are full. There is nothing in the hard to read instructions about this.

My furnace man has never heard of such a thing. I have kept it plugged in, but in the back of my mind I do not trust this alarm. I don’t know what else to do no one speaks about this online. So first Alert if you read this you might want to tell people what this means and what I should do to get rid of this annoying beep.

My old first alert began to do this at 10pm and we though it meant it was dying, but no this much more expense display model does the same thing like an alarm clock. Very annoyed.

I like everything about this detector! Plug it in. test the detector (push the TEST button). silence the eventual alarm. and now you’re ‘off and running!’ Have a gas dryer? Put a detector in your laundry room.

Have gas fireplace in the family room? Put a detector in the family room. Have a gas water heater in the basement? Put a detector in the basement. Oh, and did I happen to mention that this detector is top-rated by Consumers Report? Don’t wait any longer.

grab four or five of these detectors for the homestead — you’ll be glad to did!.

I am very disappointed with Target and more so, First Alert. This monitor will automatically shut down at seven years. That is appropriate. The seven years is from the manufacturing date. When you buy it, the manufacturing date is not visible.

These are sold in clamshell packaging. First Alert puts the manufacturing date on the back of the monitor, only visible when you pull the plug off the back. The one I bought was 1. 5 years old. I complained to First Alert via their customer service email and was told you can complain/work it out with Target; it is not First Alert’s problem.

I replied that First Alert should put the manufacturing date or the expiration date on the package. I received no reply. By the way, the monitor is nice, but just be aware that the backlit screen is not on unless there is a problem with CO levels or you test the monitor.

How can I review a detector that has never alerted me to a carbon monoxide problem and I hope never will? All I can say is that it claims to do the job, and I trust Harbor Freight and the First Alert brand.

It was easy enough to set up and mount, and the battery was included. And it performs in the test cycle. After I bought mine (I bought 2), I saw similar ones (maybe essentially the same guts, under a different name) for $5 less at a “big box” store.

But at Harbor Freight it was easy to find, and shopping at HF is always a thoroughly pleasant experience (your employees are superior in terms of helpfulness, friendliness, and product knowledge).

Just wanted to post regarding the life of the unit. It started chirping 5 times the other night. I got it a new battery and same thing. The back states that 5 chirps means end of product life, so that feature works.

Product is marked 2/2015 and it chirped a few days ago and I think had a battery in it the majority of that time. No issues with it while it was working. I couldn’t even say if I changed the battery on it (which is also a feature) so it isn’t a battery-sucker.

i bought this because i didnt have a smoke alarm in my new office space. it everything was fine with it for a long time but larely it keeps going off with the loudest noise. in fact its so loud i get dizzy sometimes and headaches until I can get someone to go turn it off.

other than it being so loud it seems to work ok.

The CO detector is a little larger than I expected, but the design is unobtrusive, so I hardly even notice it. It was very easy to set up and is easy to operate and read. The one problem I encountered was with the outlet I wanted to use.

This outlet had the prong holes one above the other, and at first I was concerned that the detector would look funny sideways on the wall. Fortunately, the folks at First Alert had anticipated this Issue, and the power adapter can be flipped 90 degrees so the detector will display horizontally.

So far, I’m very pleased with this unit. I only just got this, so I can’t comment on its longevity. However, I did check and the date on the package puts the unit at only 4 months old. This is good news as other reviewers have reported getting units that were manufactured 6 years prior to sale leaving only 1 year of life on their units.

Fortunately, that was not a problem with my purchase.

I bought this for my mother’s home to replace an old First Alert unit that was at end of life. The 7 year warranty is impressive, and should cover this unit until its end of life. I wanted dual power so it will always be operational.

You can keep the plug snapped into the back of the unit and essentially mount the unit to the power plug, or take it out and use the built in extension cord. I especially like the display. These units can give out a number of signals by using a different number of beeps.

Instead of having to figure that out in the middle of the night, this should show you the actual CO level that was detected.

Good value for the pair Good value for a pair of ten year sealed alarms. The batteries should last the lifetime of the products, so they are fit and forget, apart from periodic dusting and testing. The only potential improvement would be better installation instructions for the CO detector.

The smoke alarm has diagrams showing the optimal installation position, whereas the CO detector just has a long description which isn’t as easy to interpret.

This Carbon Monoxide Gas detector alarm is a small neat creamy white freestanding item which can also be slotted on to screw heads in the wall. The alarm is very loud, fierce and insistent! Which is what’s needed! Seems very well designed and made, should last for years; and is widely available to buy, in the UK.

Got a Test/reset button and 3 different coloured lights for – Alarm : Operate : Fault. Comes with a clear, understandable guide to setting up and using the item What more can I say?? I have to assume it will work when needed!.

The directions did not tell the buyer to remove the back plate which is then used to mark the holes on whatever wall you intend to mount the alarm. Because the back plate is taped closed to the back of the alarm, it seems to say “do not touch this plate”.

But, of course, the plate must be removed in order to ultimately attach the plate to a wall. Once it is understood that the tape must be broken and the plate removed, the rest of the problem of mounting is no problem.

I hope they have greatly improved the life span. So one of three that all are 4 yrs old, started chirping in early Oct. It was three chirps, meaning malfunction. I used an ‘air can’ at some distactance with 1 quick shot.

Nope this didn’t fix it so try try again. Nothing but 3 chirps still. So I purchased another brand to replace this one, 2 of them a little anticipation. Here it is November and I changed the batteries last month in ALL Co2 and smoke detectors.

Now another Co2 is chirping the 3 death sequence. Granted this is slightly different than my 4 yr old ones. So buyer beware of length of the service. For the price I would think it’s life should be longer.

In October 2017, I purchased one of these units for an elderly aunt. Followed all installation instructions. Everything seemed fine – successfully initiated a self-test etc. Two (2) weeks later, unfortunately during the night, the unit started beeping indicating need to replace the battery.

Batteries supplied appear to be “old” and of exceptionally poor quality. I brought this issue to both Lowe’s and First Alert’s attention and surprisingly, neither were too pre-occupied or concerned. True customer service! On closer examination I noticed the following coding stamped on the battery bottom PD0914 & ED0917.

My uninitiated guess is this coding probably stands for “Purchase Date Sept 2014” and “Expiry Date Sept 2017”. If this interpretation is in fact correct, then the battery was purchased in Sept 2014 had actually expired before the unit was sold or put into service.

Lowe’s must of gotten a real deal on these units or they had been sitting in their warehouse and store inventory for a considerable amount of time. Can’t comment of the product quality itself as I have not had it long enough but my initial impressions are not too favourable.

I’m also very disappointed with both Lowe’s and First Alert response when this issue was brought to their attention. How many other customers were also inconvenienced by the same situation. It appears from other reviews this is not a new problem nor one of any great concern to these large Corporations.

Oh well, it is what it is. If these problems persist and these large Corporations cannot or do not want to deal with the problem or change their behaviour then perhaps a simple solution would be not to include batteries in the packages.

The battery backup to the device is important protection. I use a fireplace occasionally and also have a gas furnace. The device had a fresh manufacture date. Sometimes units set on the shelve a year in the store.

This was important to me. Ordered one for myself and two for a gift.

Read prior ratings about issues with the door breaking, so I was careful in opening and closing it when installing the batteries. Could see where if you used force it might break. Tested correctly when the City came to do their inspection and my permit got signed off of.

Hopefully my house will never fill with Carbon Monoxide to find out how well it really works.

I ordered this in August 2021. When I started to install it , I found it had expired in January 2021. Certainly do not want to install a expired carbon monoxide detector.

After ten years my first detector time-expired and I bought a cheaper model as a replacement, plugged it in and went out of town for a week. It malfunctioned twice in a week and needed replacing. I reviewed recommendations for CO detectors and found this one was highly placed.

It has been installed for one month and has functioned perfectly. Would recommend.

I actually bought a half dozen for Christmas gifts this year. The battery backup is important and it’s easily replaced on this unit, as well as plugging it in has options of chord or direct plug into a receptacle.

One of the best designs I’ve seen and I’ve been watching for these units to go on sale for some time now. Great price at Lowes, and a very impressive product. well thought out, great design.

Carbon Monoxide detectors save lives! Had a friends child who was at a sleep over. and the detector went off in the middle of the night. saving everyone’s life in the house. It’s nice to have a peak level reading on the device to see how high it gets to tell the doctors treating you.

I am currently using this to monitor levels why running job site torch heaters in a basement. The inexpensive detectors seem to have a standard sensor cut at 50 and we are wanting to stay well below that for obvious reasons.

Display is intuitive and easy to read with a backlight display. The sound ticks are helpful as they increase with levels. Fluctuations picked up within seconds as we increase and decrease fresh air intake.

To date, serving our purposes very well and giving me confidence in the sensor quality; allowing for further testing of various needs in residential construction. With that said, I do not have not have nor have I ever purchased a competing brand for comparison.

My home furnace stopped working consistently and so I called a heating and air contractor. After four visits over a months period, they could not pin point the cause of non operation but thought there might be a heat exchanger leak.

At this point, I purchased this Fieldpiece detector. Knowing that with the blower running I might get a 1000:1 dilution of a CO leak, I put the detector on a hearing register and watched the CO level climb to 9 ppm at which point I turned the furnace off and called the contractor for a furnace replacement.

The same register with the new furnace gives a 0 ppm reading on the Fieldpiece Furnaces are not 100% failsafe. Living with > 9pm CO in my house cannot be a good thing over time.

Over the years I have owned a number of CO meters (Bacharach, KWJ, InfiCon, UEI, Forensics). The SCM4 is a top performer as it responds very rapidly, goes back to zero reliably, and is solidly built.

The audible beeps are convenient. Overall, it’s a worthy replacement for my trusted Bacharach SnifIt 50.

Pro: Seems to work. 10 year lifetime. Comes with a battery and hopefully won’t need to change it very often. Con: Never heard of this brand.

Your product was a perfect match for the original installation in a 15 years old home. I did not even half to change the location of the mounting holes.

Quick and easy! These are super easy to install. I replaced very similar units already wired together, and replacement was easy. I did not feel a need to turn off the electricity; I just pulled the plug from the old ones, as the connecting plug is identical for both old and new.

The only difference was the mounting ring; I had to unscrew two screws in the ceiling, twist the existing ring off, and put on the new one (after untwisting it from the new detector), then screwing it down.

Then the detector itself twist-locks into the new ring. So far (about two weeks) we have had no false alarms. I plan on getting the 5 pack for the rest of the house and linking them.

I am truly impressed with the quality of this combination detector. I love that I finally only have to have one detector that works for both smoke and carbon monoxide. I truly feel safer in my home knowing I am protected with this detector.

It was super easy to install since we previously had wired detectors throughout our home. It was literally a matter of a few wire connections and up it went. I love that it has a 10 year lithium battery in case of power outage and that it has a locked drawer to prevent tampering.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is in the market for a new smoke and carbon monoxide detector as you will not be disappointed in this one.

I installed it with battery backup right away. It comes with a 9V battery but you have to remove a plastic strip in order to expose the connections. At first I mistook the strip for a pull band that assists battery removal in other brands of smoke detectors, and this caused the unit to chirp with a low battery warning after installation.

Removing the strip solved that. There is a hush/test button that works, and there is a sliding battery door. Since there was no highly visible expiration year sticker, I wrote the current year plus 10 on the side of the unit with a pencil.

There is a 10 year guarantee.

I’m giving this one star rating for one reason only. The life span of carbon monoxide detectors is 5-7 years and they are usually on the 5 year side. This one is already 3 years old. It was manufactured in 2019.

I’m going to keep it just to see how long it lasts, but never again. Next time it goes back and back and back until I get an up to date one.
