20 Best Hair Product For Curls (2023 Updated)

Completely regret buying this & especially in the bigger bottle. I hardly ever straighten my hair but once in a while, I like to try something with my flat iron & I realized I needed a heat protectant so I bought this one since a lot of people rave about this brand & it’s widely known.

Well I instantly regret my decision. It makes my hair sticky when I spray it in & then it makes the strands dry & crisp??? Such a weird result from a product. I thought maybe I was spraying too close to my hair or spraying too much in so I tried spraying less & further away but NOPE.

Same thing again. Really upset cause it makes me not wanna use this and I have a big bottle of it. Also I read that it works better when you use it on damp hair or it’s supposed to be used on damp hair? But it advertises itself as heat protectant that can be used on both damp and dry hair so it should work well on both?? Ugh so annoyed I bought this.

Save your money & don’t buy this.

LOVE this! Leaves my chemically damaged hair so much shinier and softer than most things I’ve tried! I imagine a lot of the bad reviews are from people who are using it on dry hair when it’s meant for wet hair.

I have had 2 different Sephora employees recommend this to me when was looking for heat protectant spray to use on hair that’s already dry. I tried it out on dry hair to see if they were right but I wouldn’t recommend it, it definitely left a weird gritty texture on my hair as others have claimed.

When used prior to blow-drying it’s one amazing!.

I have horrendously dry hair because of health problems. I haven’t died my hair in years because my hair just can’t take it. Missing dietary nutrients don’t help the issue at all. SIBO has taken over everything and has stripped my hair of any healthiness.

I ordered a sample, and I am literally blown away by the results. My hair doesn’t look or feel like straw. There’s a shine to my hair that I haven’t felt in years and my hair isn’t weighted down with products to bring out that luster that one washing has given me.

I will be a user of this product for life.

Not unlike my other ‘curly girls’, I’ve spent a small fortune over the years trying what feels like a gazillion different products that never did what they promised. After reading all the reviews, it became obvious that the majority of those who left a negative review must not have read the directions prior to use(no judgements, we’ve all done that) – it’s SUPPOSE to make your hair crunchy, stiff, & as 1 person described, the ‘wet look’.

They were skipping the final step of, what Curlsmith calls ‘breaking the cast’. That’s when you take your fingers & scrunch the curls therefore breaking the hardened cast that keeps the curls. This is the BEST product for defining my curls, but I do believe it helps when you use this in conjunction w the other products from Curlsmith.

My hair is colored, dry, frizzy, over 75%white & VERY long(past my butt), with medium curl. Curlsmith is the ONLY system that, IF directions are followed, keeps my curls w out frizz, gives my hair volume I thought was only possible if I cut off a lot of length, gives me beautiful curls for 6 days, BUT the key for this product to work is 1) following the directions the WHOLE WAY THROUGH 2) use as part of the Curlsmith system 3) do NOT use on dry hair, your hair needs to be WET, NOT DAMP, but WET- I use them all IN the shower.

When l say ‘part of the Curlsmith system’, you really only need 4 of their products, &they have many products in each category to help you personalize for your particular issues/curl type. For ME, their wash/conditioner is wonderful & I suggest it for EVERY one.

Then I use either In Shower Style Fixer or Weightless Air Dry Cream(do NOT wash out). The final product I use BEFORE I get out of the shower is THIS product OR Curlsmith’s Hydro Style Flexi Jelly. These 2 products work very similar to each other; let hair COMPLETELY DRY then scrunch out the cast(that’s the step a lot of reviewers seemed to skip).

The 4th product, 1 I also recommend for ALL curly girls, is Moisture Memory Reactivator- the only 1 of the 4 I use that is meant for DAMP hair- it’s amazing, the curls just seem to pop back out of nowhere! The final 1 suggestion to all my curly friends out there.

WRAP YOUR HAIR BEFORE BED! At the VERY LEAST order a silk scrunchie(it won’t leave dents in your hair, lots of times all I have to do is take my hair down, shake it out, &go) &loosely put your hair in a messy pony tail before bed.

It’s best to wrap a silky scarf around it to stop the frizzies, but I don’t always do that either. I love ALL Curlsmith products when they are used together! Using them independently doesn’t give the same results, I tried it.

I use to hate my curls, NOW I LOVE THEM!.

I am a natural redhead with fine, very porous, truly 3C curls (with just a few random 3B curls thrown in). I have NEVER been able to use a gel styler. (They typically make my hair stringy, tangly, and look like I need a wash.

) THIS Styling Souffle is a game-changer! Like any leave-in products, I can’t use too much, because my hair is fine and not dense. But this, layered on after a bit of the Oil-in-Cream leave-in, makes my curls very nicely defined, but also soft and bouncy — not at all crunchy or stringy or tangly! This is GREAT! Winter is my hated-hair season.

my curls typically go flat and frizzy. This December, I discovered Curlsmith, and bought a bunch of travel sizes to try different products when Ulta had them on sale. I really like them ALL, but this is one of my very favorite stylers! My hair has been hydrated, soft, and my curls well-defined! (Probably achieving a good moisture-protein balance).

I love that they have different product lines of products (detox, protein, moisture, etc. ) and different levels of hold in the stylers, because my hair is very temperamental and changes with the weather.

All of them work for me, except the really aggressive hold gels because my hair is so fine. But I can use the Shape Up Aqua Gel, and love it too — especially if I use a small amount and combine it with the “Hold Me Softly” cream.

I REALLY don’t at all get what some other reviews say about the scent of the products being smelly. I am extremely allergic and sensitive to perfumey- or chemically-scented products, which aggrevate my allergies and asthma badly.

(More than most people — Seriously, I have thrown out expensive products from other companies because of their scent!). Curlsmith’s scents don’t bother me at all, and the scents that are there fade right away.

(I suspect that a competitor — like one whose products I USED to buy, and who had a lawsuit recently? — may be paying someone to post nasty reviews. Hmmmm?). Of course, some people are really sensitive and can’t even be around pure essential oils (which mostly don’t bother me).

Curlsmith products are WONDERFUL and they work! Not all products work for every curly head, which is why it’s so great that Curlsmith has so many different products! Have fun experimenting!.

The gel is great. My hair loves it and all it does is enhance my 2b/2c hair, BUT the dang jar packaging of the 8oz is a child of the devil. I have feared dropping this and the multi-tasking conditioner in my shower and loosing it all down the drain.

TONIGHT IT HAPPENED. It is not how I wanted to spend my wash day, cleaning the shower with a half done head of hair because this gel is very slippery and clings everywhere. This is dangerous combination in the shower, especially when you can’t see.

I wear glasses and cannot see anything but a blur without them. I’m legally blind without my glasses and have feared dropping this dang jar. I was carefully trying to put the lid back on and down it went.

I don’t have a place to rest it to put the lid on that isn’t under the shower head, so I had to do it while trying to hold the product in my hand to use and put the lid on. I lost it all and what was left of my wash day sanity.

I will not be buying this product for a while as it is expensive for a gel, but once I’ve used up some others, I’ll only buy the 16oz for the pump packaging alone. If the jar packaging was a way of getting people to buy more because they drop it, great job marketing team.

Us visually disabled people cannot stand jar packaging for hair and face products for this very reason, plus I have no idea where it went because I cannot see to find the dad-blast-it thing. Please consider becoming a company more aware of the consequences of packaging types on persons with disabilities.

Jar packaging also causes all kinds of issues with contamination and loss of nutrients due to the open nature of the jar.

I hate that I didn’t like this hair product, because I really like the shampoo and conditioner of this line. But this smoothie was hugely disappointing. It has a very slimy/gluey texture that does not mix/spread into my hair well at all.

The first time I used it my hair was quite wet. I tried to work the product in my hands before applying, but was still left with white splotches I had to wipe away/in. Since it didn’t spread, I ended up using a lot of product.

After a few hours (when my hair would be dried with other products), my hair felt crunchy like a mousse, but sticky like a pomade. It had no natural movement and looked wet. I tried it a 2nd time on damp hair – not as wet as the 1st time – and used a lot less product.

It didn’t have the stickiness like before but looked the same. I had little frizz, but it was still stiff like if I added glue to my hair. Both times it leaves my hair looking fried – similar to when it’s damaged and fried with heat or chemicals.

It’s stiff, whispy, and dry. The container says you can add to dry hair, but it’s like adding glue. Not a good situation. The only positive thing I say about it is that it smells good enough to eat. Unfortunately, I can definitely not recommend this to anyone.

I originally had a love-hate relationship with SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I think it’s important to know that less is more with this product. Just for reference, I have low porosity 3a/b fine, natural long curly hair.

With other products I’ve been so used to using a ton of product, but when I did this with the curl enhancing smoothie it left my curls weighed down and honestly, tired looking. This product can really build up on your hair if you use too much!!! I started using less product and I started to like it SO MUCH more! So, a little goes a long way!! I usually wet my hair, section it, and rake the product in for best results.

It smells really good and it’s easy to use, but you need to find the right amount that works for YOU. It’s well priced and easy to find at most stores.

I have 2b/2c hair that is often weighed down by products, so it is a challenge to find something that helps define my curls but is still light enough to keep them soft. I kept seeing rave reviews for this curling jelly, but assumed it was more for curlier or coily hair.

I decided to take a chance and try it and I am kicking myself for waiting so long. All I can say is wow. exactly what I have been looking for all these years. My curls are really soft, well-defined, and are popping! They seem to hold their definition all day and with little to no frizz.

I will definitely be repurchasing.

I loved this product. My wash n go was super defined and it wasn’t crunchy once it dried. It gives a lighter hold than your normal gel and I didn’t have any flaking. It has good slip and my hair was soft when it dried.

It will flake if mixed with the wrong products every product doesn’t mesh together good. If you plan to mix this with another product I recommend putting a small amount on your wrist 1st to test. If it lumps up on you don’t put both on your hair it’ll flake.

It has a pleasant smell and didn’t take as long as a heavier gel to dry.

In conjunction with the Brazilian foam, this works wonders for my curls. It doesn’t take much application. It also doesn’t make my hair feel dry. I can even go a few days without reapplying product and it STILL looks amazing.

I have color treated hair and hydration is a must and this product keeps my tresses moisturized! Not to mention the smell!!! It’s like a fruity heaven!! It’s is definitely worth the rotation! I love this product.

I’ve tried every curl product you can imagine. My hair is coarse 3C/4A curl pattern and long. This leaves my hair bouncy, light and curly. I use the whole line, from shampoo to leave in, to curl cream and follow with the curl foam.

I have learned to avoid silicones, which this product doesn’t have. Products with heavy creams and oils weigh my hair down and even leave my neck, back, face feeling oily. This product is light and non-greasy.

I’ll continue to use it.

This curl cream was one of my first purchases from Mielle! I was very excited to use it, it actually worked great for my curly hair at first. My hair actually started growing out thicker. I was also using the avocado moisturizer with this curl cream.

Unfortunately, I noticed that with or without the moisturizer, my hair still looked like dry curls! The curl cream also has a tangerine or weird smell, so I had to switch to the pomegranate curl mousse.

This is truly an amazing product. I use it along with Oyinhandmade burnt sugar pomade (for added hold). In combination they both add moisture keeping my hair coily and fresh for up to 8 days. It can even be rejuvenated by re-twisting with just a tad bit of water on my fingertips.

So glad I found this product. My only complaint is that the jars don’t come full of product. So I did feel like I was shorted. I sent an email regarding that, no one responded 😏. All in all, I will continue to purchase.

I just hope they address how much product is shorted when packaging.

I love this product. This is my curly hair staple!!!!. I have a really hard time finding products that work for my hair. It is really soft and curly, AND I’m allergic to a lot of good stuff that is in natural hair products.

Trying to keep it clean and safe, this product checks all of my boxes. I love this, and have recommended it to all my friends and family. This brand is hands down my favorite natural/curly hair line.

I’m a 62 yr old woman with naturally curly hair past my waist. My hair, not extensions. I don’t blow-dry my hair or use curling implements. Every once in a long while (like 5years) I will use my ceramic flat iron just to have a different look for an occasion.

But I’m a wash-and-wear woman. I live in Florida, and had not yet found a product that kept my hair from frizzing. I’ve used PM products in the past and liked them. Especially the Super Skinny Serum.

So when I came across this product at a salon I decided to give it a try. It keeps my hair smooth without weighing down the curls. Once dry it can be a bit “crunchy” like a lot of leave in products. But i’ve found that gently scrunching my dry curls breaks it up, and leaves my hair soft, shiny, and curly.

Unfortunately, as with other reviewers, I find small chunks of white in my hair after applying, even with pumping it into one of my palms and then vigorously rubbing my palms together to warm and emulsify the product.

With as much hair as I have, combing through my wet curls and picking out the chunks is tedious. Will it keep me from using the product? Doubtful. Simply because it really makes my hair look lovely. However I may have to resort to using it only for special occasions, until the problem is solved.

I have 2c mid back length hair. I tried this product alone without any other products. It smelled good while applying but left no other scent once dry. I scrunched this in and allowed to air dry. Once my hair was completely dry there was no defined curls.

It wasn’t crunchy. It seemed to weigh my hair down. I tried using less the next time and still no results I was looking for. There was less frizz but no definition. Maybe as a frizz tamer but not for definition.

This is my favourite product! Because of my dry curly hair, which is prone to frizz, I use five products (including a Paul Mitchell shampoo, and a conditioner of another brand) whenever I wash my hair.

This is the last one I use and is the one I rely on most. If I don’t use it, I don’t get the result I want. My hairdresser even applies it for me after washing and cutting my hair. This is a terrific product for curly hair if you want a soft hold without crunch/crackle – and that soft curl is what I get after I comb my dry hair with a wide-toothed comb.

This is my favorite hair product for my hair! I have curls that are fine so I can’t use any product that is super heavy, but I need something that will prevent me from getting frizz. I have been using this product on my hair for a few years now and am amazed at how well it works.

I do mix this product with a leave-in conditioner when I apply it to my hair. I’ve attached a photo of the tremendous difference this product makes on my hair, and what I look like without any product in my hair.

Sometimes I will use this on my son’s curly hair after the bath. It makes his curls more defined without weighing his hair down with product. Once his hair dries, you can’t even tell there is product on his hair, because the finish is weightless.

The scent is wonderful as well. My husband and son both use this product, and it is amazing! Wonderful for thick, wavy to curly hair.

It took several attempts to make this product work for my 3b shoulder length hair. After washing, I sqweeze much of the water out with a tshirt. It takes quite a good dollop of curling custard for each side of my head, work it in very well with your fingers, avoid the scalp.

I add twists all over, scrunch it again lightly with my wet tshirt then I do not touch my hair for an hour. Next, blow dry using a diffuser, still not breaking the cast with my hands but I do push clumps of hair up to my head with the diffuser.

When almost dry, I hand-scrunch and go! The hold in this product is beyond anything I’ve used and I’m 64 so have been dealing with curly hair for a long time! Yes, it’s crunchy but it’s easily scrunched out.

I don’t scrunch the cast if I’m going to bed but wait until morning. I don’t get any white flaking at all.

I have been using KKCC for many years now and I can say that it is a consistent, well-made gel. It is also a classic film forming gel, so it may start out crunchy, but will soften and hold your wash n’ go once the cast is broken.

I have med-high porosity hair (4a shaped coils/curls). It has always had it’s critics but I find that it is a gel with a learning curve. It’s a balance of gel and water. You will get flakes or blobs of gel in your hair if you don’t work with water during application–not a lot of water but enough to activate the gel and evenly coat hair strands.

I also use another gel that Target sells–UFD Curly Magic. Both are solid, consistent film forming gels. They will lock in the moisture for long-lasting wash n’ gos. I purchase the large size in both, though, I’m not sure if you can get the larger/jumbo size at Target.

I have tried this gel about 10 times and I’ve came to realize it wasn’t for me. I have low porosity 3a/3b curls and I always loved the Kinky Curly Knot Today. I decided to pair these together and honestly my hair was a frizzy dry nightmare.

I applied it to soaking wet hair like the instructions said because I know a few people that reviewed didn’t. After my styling my roots were super fluffy poofy brushed out looking and overall had some of the most frizz I’ve ever had in my life.

I came to find out that aloe vera contains protein which would explain the frizz and dryness. The ingredients are honestly amazing, the price is a little high, but the product is quite concentrated. It seems best for people with higher porosity hair or those who like protein.

I have been using this cream gel for years. Many stylists have tried to change my mind about the product by nothing would work the wonders that this product offered me. Recently I noticed a new coconut formulation of this cream gel.

I tried it and the results are not the same. It’s harder to brush through my hair and the curls look more dry, less hold, and more frizz. I wish garnier would go back to the old formula because this is not working for me.

I’ve been using it on my daughter too and the new formula doesn’t work on her curls either and her curls are more loose than mine.

I have naturally wavy/loose curly blonde hair. I shower at night, so as my hair dries while I sleep, half ends up flat and the other half is very curly. Ive used curl creams and products in the past that make my hair really crunchy, but very curly.

I thought since this was a conditioner it would do the same without the crunch. I was wrong. Although it smells nice, it doesnt do anything water and air drying it (while not sleeping/laying down) wouldnt do.

I first dampen my hair with a spray bottle and then run the conditioner through my hair and then scrunch it up and let it air dry the rest of the way. I use it the same way I would a curl or scrunch cream, and just dont get even close to the same results.

Maybe I should use it differently to achieve a better result, but Im not really sure what to do. I also may have expected this to be similar to a curl cream when its actually just a conditioning product for curly hair, who knows.

Anyway, Ill use the rest of the bottle since I paid for it, but I wont be purchasing again.

Love this so much! This is my lifetime hair product. It became that after the first time I used it like 7 years ago or more I think if not longer. My hair is long, curly, and heavy. A lot of products just made my hair look crunchy.

This is heavy enough to hold my curls and keep away the frizz monster-and light enough to not weigh my curls down, keeping them bouncy, not make my hair look greasy or oily. It smells amazing and doesn’t irritate me.

I think anyone with curls should give it a try.

After reading the reviews, I decided to purchase this. I’m so glad I did. I had previously been using Pattern’s styling cream but the SMELL!! I couldn’t get past it. It worked great but the smell was just too strong.

Smelled like a bouquet of flowers which I do not enjoy in my hair. This stuff on the other hand smells AMAZING! Has a fresh out of the shower fragrance that’s not too empowering. I have thick hair with natural waves.

I used this stuff right out of the shower and my hair dried to natural looking beach waves! I would not recommend using this anywhere near your scalp because you will look greasy. It’s very light and makes my hair feel super soft! I will forever use this as long as Living Proof continues to make it.

The mini size is actually a decent size and a little bit goes a long way! If you’re hesitant on buying this stuff, go for it!!!.

I love Living Proof products. Most don’t fail to nourish and hydrate my hair. But I was skeptical about using the curl enhancer since I have loose wavy hair. On top of that, I’m not really a hair product person, in general.

Like if I’m styling my hair, I’ll use a heat protectant and do a mask or treatment on occasion, but I don’t typically use a product post-shower on the reg. This was a game changer. My hair had waves I typically can only achieve after styling with a heat tool.

And it looked super healthy and conditioned. The luster and luminescence are reminiscent of the efficacy of Kerastase products, which I j’dore. The fragrance is beautiful, similar to other Living Proof scents – light, clean, fresh.

I’m considering adding this to my daily routine; the only caveats are the price and my having to expand my beauty regimen.

This product does wonders for my wavy hair! I’ve been using this for the last few months and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my hair compared to other products. It turns my waves into tighter curls without making my hair crusty, heavy, or greasy.

It’s super lightweight and you don’t have to use too much of it to get the effect that you’re looking for. I usually apply this to my wet hair and scrunch it in, then I apply a mousse over the top. It makes my hair so much softer and less frizzy especially in the winter months.

A bonus is how great it smells! It’s a really subtle but pleasant fresh fragrance. I will definitely keep purchasing this!.

I’ve used this product for years. I have thick, dry, curly hair. And I’ve loved how this product would hold my curl, over days, because I don’t wash my dry hair every day. But they’ve changed the formula, and now it really sucks.

Doesn’t hold my curl longer than one afternoon before it gets uncontrollably frizzy. This product has been ruined for me. Now I have to try to find something new and hope that I can find something as good as this product used to be.

The product gives me bouncy curls so in that sense it fulfills it’s promise. When inside Day 7 hair is great: soft, bouncy and defined curls. HOWEVER, the fact that the product is geared towards curls but clearly doesn’t have enough hold is DISSAPOINTING.

That’s the only thing stopping me from purchasing this again. SUGGESTION to tresemme: create 2 formulas- one for wavy & loose curly hair and a separate one for very curly hair (‘3b-4a’). A one size approach hasn’t worked for me in this case.

I am going to give it a 3 since I couldn’t give it a 3. 5. The Defining Gel has a great non-sticky appeal. Neither my hands nor my hair felt heavy, coated or sticky but it did have some “crunchy” pieces.

I don’t like that crunchy gel feeling in my hair. My hair wasn’t curly after using the diffuser as it is with another product I use. It was just barely waves. I will try it again with a different diffuser and see what happens.

My hair is long and one length so I was expecting soft waves not what I got. But I am getting my hair cut in a few weeks so I’ll update with that change.

This gel is excellent stuff. I’d give it an “E” anytime for excellent! Incidently, there is nothing like abstinence to solve global over population. But then we do not have that problem now, since everyone has already got the covid shot, which makes said volunteers sterile or barren permanently.

Just have to leave it to the Catholic Church from 3rd world countries to make up for the shortfall, since abstinence belongs to the annals of history and is foreign to beauty queens from jungle villages aka cleaners here in the USA.

This isn’t necessarily a bad curl cream, but I do think it’s overpriced and so I probably won’t repurchase. This cream doesn’t really give me any extra curl, which is the main reason I bought it, so that’s a bit of a let down.

It does make my hair soft though and provides some hold, so there’s that. It also smells nice, not at all like pet shampoo like some people have said. More like something sweet, like a baked good, I can’t quite put my finger on what it reminds me of.

This cream does give a specific look, at least for me, and that’s definition but with separation. If you’re looking for big curl clumps this probably isn’t the product for you, but if you like smaller clumps (not stringy, just smaller), you’ll like this.

Luckily that’s the look I’m going for because I have layers, if I use a product that makes big clumps I end up looking like I barely have any hair. The best thing about this cream in my opinion is that it doesn’t weigh down my very fine hair even if I use a lot of it (it comes out fast!).

Not many products for curls can be used liberally on fine hair, so if your strands are fine and you like the smaller clump look this would probably be the perfect product for you!.

I’m extremely new to CGM as I had straight hair for the first 23 years of my life and in the past 2 years it’s gotten wavier and wavier. I have fine but dense 2B hair that is a little past shoulder length with medium-high porosity from coloring.

I still color my hair every month and a half and use shampoo and conditioner with all the bad stuff. I got this product on a whim because of the sale and I’m so glad I did! I used it for the first time last night after washing and micro plopping to remove excess water.

I then scrunched in about a quarter sized amount of recoil and then microplopped again for about 10-15 minutes. After that I air dried and went to bed with it down but on a silk pillowcase. This morning I brushed it out (I’m not ready to give up brushing and my hair holds a curl pretty well).

I wish I could add a picture because my hair looks so good. Even the front pieces that never waved look amazing! I still have a very straight layer of hair underneath but I think that’s just my curl pattern.

Received this in a subscription box about 6 months ago and have been playing with it. My situation – still trying to figure out my hair. My natural hair, with no products added, is a mix of 2a/2b, and the random 2c clump or ringlet curl at the ends of my hair.

Througout the day though, it all tends to straighten out to 2a. As I’ve been expirementing with wav/curly products to try to enhance/preserve the waves, most products are too heavy for my fine hair and straighten it more (and it feels dirty).

This does not do that! When I use a small amount of this, mixed with a small amount of leave-in conditioner, my hair feels awesome – it just also hasn’t made much difference throughout my day. It has helped preserve the style if I do overnight no-heat curl or heated curls, but it wasn’t answer I was hoping for (and I’ve tried it in conjuction, and in different orders, with many products).

I received this product as part of an influencer voxbox and have been trying it for a few weeks and I absolutely love it. I’ve tried so many curl activators/enhancers over the past few years and when I tried this one the results were almost immediate even after sleeping on wet hair overnight.

It doesn’t leave any sticky residue on your hairs after application and it doesn’t leave your hair greasy or oily. The smell is amazing and lasts a long time which is always a plus. I’ve found that the size of the bottle and cap are great for travel, fits perfectly in a travel accessory bag! My only negative for this is that it is a little bit difficult to squeeze the product out of the bottle which can lead to using more than you’d like.

Overall I would definitely recommend this to any of my fellow wavy/curly haired gals!.
