20 Best Fuel Additives For Cars (2023 Updated)

I’ve used many brands of fuel system cleaners, and this is by far the BEST that I’ve used. I had an immediate improvement in performance which has carried over to future fill-ups. I only use premium gas, so I wasn’t expecting such a dramatic improvement.

Other brands didn’t provide such an improvement. I will continue to use this product in the future as recommended.

I use this cleaner just once a year, and every time I do, I notice a marked improvement in my engine’s performance. Runs smoother, and reduces worrisome mystery noises that old cars are prone to make.

I am confident this product has extended the life of my van, and helped me avoid some pretty costly repairs. Very much worth the investment.

I have tried many fuel treatments in the past, almost all of them. Rislone Hyper Fuel is the only one that made a difference. I use it in my daily driver, and my supercharged Camaro during the warm months.

Throttle response, MPG, engine noise – all better. Especially good for combating bad tanks of gas, which I have gotten several times, ususally when dealing with winter gas. Gas today is pretty good, so that’s why I find most fuel additives don’t do much.

But this one is a monthly addition for me for every car in our family. You do not need to use every tank. I think they recommend 5,000 miles but I go with once a month and I have noticed a difference.

Very solid product. Like that it’s more than just a single additive – this has multiple additives in the bottle so you don’t need to mess with anything else. Good product and good price, and easy to get at Walmart and Walmart online.

After trying other products on the market, I have been using this one for a few years and have never been disappointed. I use it in a newer engine (2018 Lexus, 4-cyl), as well as an older 2008 5. 7L HEMI V8 and it works great in both.

I recently put in the older vehicle before a long trip and noticed significant improvement in both gas mileage and performance. Highly recommend at least during every oil change, but can be used more often (monthly), depending on how much you drive.

No negative effects, safe for catalytic converters. Very efficient and cost effective. One ounce per gallon is recommended. Does not disappoint.

My 2001 F150 had a stuck fuel gauge and terrible build-up of sulfer on the injectors. Several treatments with the Techron Plus Concentrate product fixed the gauge problem and the injectors look brand new after pulling the fuel rail.

This is the only product I have found that treats sulfer deposits. It also prevents future deposits. The longer you can let the fuel sit with a full tank, the better your results will be. This product just works! I use it now once every couple of months just to maintain the fuel system and my truck is very happy.

Man the more I read reviews on here the more I have to laugh at how stupid the world has become. The first thing you need to understand as if it wasn’t spelled out enough is that this is NOT an engine cleaning product in any way shape or form.

People mentioning that it hasn’t fixed carbon buildup in their engines clearly don’t know what this is for. As it’s mixed with your fuel and sprayed through your fuel injectors into the carburetor where it literally explodes it will never ever ever be in a position to clean your engine of carbon buildup.

It won’t fix a car with major mechanical issues as I get the feeling a lot of people think it will and as for gas mileage, the cleanliness of your engine (which this doesn’t fix) is the single biggest determining factor in that (crap in your engine reduces space around the pistons and the chambers and affects compression ratio etc etc).

This stuffs primary function is in particular cleaning your little fuel injectors which spray fuel over the carburetor head. I have no reason to believe it doesn’t do this. Now if one of your injectors is old and faulty – no it won’t fix it.

If, there is mild buildup of crap in the injector head or opening it most probably will remove it – same way draino will clean your pipes but won’t fix a broken one. Simple? Got it? In terms of what I actually felt with my car? A little extra beef in the pickup – it hasn’t turned my RAV4 into a Ferrari, but I have felt a little uptick in pickup.

This would seem consistent with some freshly cleaned fuel injectors probably being a fraction more efficient with their job of spraying fuel. So for goodness sake don’t read and believe the jilted claims of people here pissed off that a $20 bottle of refined fuel hasn’t fixed 2Gs worth of engine issues.

This stuff is fine and some regular use will stop you ever having to fork out $250 for a mechanic to clean your fuel injectors if they ever got so gunked up. Cheers.

BMW 535i was sputtering and jerking while braking or slowing down. Had light black smoke coming from tailpipes on start up. got some stp and within minutes all symptoms stopped and i got some very fast acceleration response awesome awesome product!.

STP complete is a little more expensive than some other brands that claim to do the same work, but it works very well. To me, the investment is definitely worth the outcome!

My 73 Mustang had been sitting for a year. I changed the oil and went straight to AutoZone to get some carb cleaner. Added the STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner and a full tank of gas. Before I got home, the car was running like it’s old self.

I have a 2001 honda civic which has 287k miles on it. Im driving this car everyday for work (80 miles round trip). Yesterday, my car had a rough idling or whenever im shifting to neutral my car vibrates and losing power until the engine turned off.

I sent to a mechanic and he said that i need to replace the throtle body assembly and idle air control valve. I dont really believed him, instead i went to walmart to get this product which the walmart mechanic told me to put in my gas tank.

This is a maintenance drug for my car; keeps the fuel injectors clean without paying a mechanic to do the same thing. Just put a can in when you fill up with gas, and this stuff cleans the injectors.

It’s the same thing that dealers and garages do, but they charge you a lot more. I use it about every 6 months.

Been using for years in my MF533. Keeps fuel clean of water, fuel filter stays clean. Change fuel filter every two years and doesn’t need it, but do it anyway. Runs smooth. Started using when I bought it new in 2006.

Good for winter storage. I use 4 oz per 15 gals. Measure in glass container to make sure what I’m putting in. Highly recommend for all diesels.

I have been using Stanadyne Performance Diesel Fuel Additive for over 8 years. First truck was used for Hot-Shot delivery, averaged 150K miles per year. Second truck pulled a 18,000-pound trailer going on 50K miles.

I have not had any issues with fuel pumps or injectors for over 250K miles. After calculating the fuel mileage driving 65 MPH. I get 1. 2 miles more per gallon using Stanadyne than non-treated diesel.

It pays for itself and then some. I would buy it by the 5-gallon bucket when driving the hot shot truck. Now I buy the case of 16oz bottles.

I took my diesel in for an emissions test and it failed. The mechanic told me to put a bottle of Stanadyne fuel additive in the tank and drive it like I stole it. After about 20 minutes of highway driving I brought it back for a retest and it passed with flying colors! Now, along with regular treatments I always put a bottle in the tank before an emission test.

It passes every time.

Lucas High Mileage fuel treatment with exclusive Lucas cleaners and lubricants. 5. 25 fl oz (155ml). I poured this in after my fill up. Gas, not diesel. Was eager to try this since my Hyundai sonata hesitates slightly when I press on the gas to go after a stop.

By the time my car needed another fill up, I noted slight improvement in the running of my car. The ride was smoother; I usually fill up every three days. This tank lasted 5 days or just about. I drove same distance and same amount of days to work and back; and finally, my car did not hesitate as much when I pressed the gas to go after a stop.

The hesitation is usually noticeable, especially when merging on the highway, but after this additive, I barely noticed, and as I kept driving, it would hit me that I had had no problem merging. This was the biggest thing for me.

Since June of 2014, I have a 2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 diesel motorhome with the 2. 7 liter, turbocharged 5 cylinder Mercedes engine. In June of 2019, I started using the Lucas fuel treatment and the motorhome had about 85k miles on it.

I first bought the quart size of this Lucas fuel treatment because the quart size has ounce measurements on the side of the quart bottle. Now I buy the Lucas gallon size and refill the quart size from the gallon size.

I was very lucky to be told to start using this Lucas fuel treatment, because in 2019, my injectors must have been clogged. This Lucas fuel treatment completely fixed the rough idling and rough starting.

Improvement in the engine performance started happening on the first day, but it took 9 days for the Lucas fuel treatment to fully soak into the injectors and fuel system for maximum effect. Now my Sprinter runs great because of this Lucas, although I do change the engine air filter every 4000 miles, and I also clean the air filter at 2000 miles by blowing across it and dropping it repeatedly face down on the pavement.

I order about 5 of the Mann brand air filters at a time from RockAuto. com because of RockAuto’s low prices. Lucas fuel additive is the best thing that has happened to the consistent, exceptional performance of my Sprinter motorhome’s engine.

About 15 years ago I started using Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant in all my equipment and vehicles. When I initially tried it, I was not sure it did anything special, but decided to try it in a 2007 Honda Civic I used to travel to work, a 90-mile round trip.

The first few tanks, I was not sold on it, since I could not tell for sure if the improvement in gas mileage per tank fill up was actually from the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant. I did a random test of 3 tanks with Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant in and 3 tanks without.

During the 5-week time frame, I averaged nearly 20 more miles per tank full with the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant in then the tanks without the lubricant in. At the time the price per gallon of gas was over $3 a gallon and the Civic got close to 39 MPG.

1/2 gallon of gas per tank savings was $1. 50 and 2. 5 ounces of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant cost me 45 cents or a tank savings of at least $1. 00 per tank fill up. Since the Civic averaged over 25,500 miles per year, this would have been over $300 a year in savings.

My second test was with a John Deere LT166 16HP lawn mower which I could mow our yard twice on 1 tank of gas and have about 1 inch of gas left in the bottom of the tank. When I added the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant, I could mow twice on 1 tank of gas and have 2-3 inches of gas left in the tank.

Although not sizable, there was a clear improvement with gas usage. The other benefit I noticed with the Civic was longer intervals between oil changes. I could run the Civic on synthetic oil for at least 9,600 miles before I would ever get an indicator on the dash informing me it was time to change the oil.

Prior to the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant, the average oil change indicator came on under 9,000. I use it in everything I own that takes gas or diesel.

A great product. This treatment does make a difference with fuel economy. Also, the engine no longer stumbles. I used to have a problem with the engine of our ’99 Ford Expedition stumbling after stopping at a traffic light following exiting the freeway.

I tried several fuel treatments and Lucas works the best. I’ve been using this for more than ten years.

If you exclusively use a TopTier™ gasoline, this should not be necessary. If you are burning a little oil or, like in my case, where I’ve bought used cars for all of my kids recently, this should be considered as part of a refurbishment regimen.

I would also say that it is good to use doing an “Italian tune-up. ” If you do a lot of driving under 30 minutes, your engine does not get hot enough for long enough to burn off naturally occurring build up from the fuel.

The occasional journey for 2 hours at full freeway speed will help achieve and maintain a nice hot temperature that does get rid of some of that buildup. Using Gumout while doing one of those “burn it out” trips will only help.

My favorite additive is a compound called PEA. PEA is not featured in this formula and it is a lot stronger, which means you don’t want to use it too often. That’s OK too, think of it as taking both ibuprofen and acetaminophen to address a fever.

You take both simultaneously and they don’t interact cause a severe reaction combined, but both are working towards the same goal. While I can’t tell you Gumout actually did anything inside my Toyota 2AR-FE engine (an incredibly popular engine as it was featured in millions of Camrys, RAV4s, Venzas, etc.

). I bought this particular car with nearly 100,000 miles on it and, surely, the previous owner put a tank or two full of lower quality gasoline in it, maybe a lot. Most people don’t think about that stuff, they look at the lowest price.

I used this in conjunction with another cleaner, a black bottle of fuel system cleaner from a company known for its gas stations. Again, the best thing you can do for your car is spend that extra 5¢ to 10¢ a gallon and get a TopTier™ gas every time that you fill up.

In addition to making sure your gas is good, make sure your air filter is clean, that your mass air flow sensor is clean and that your tires are properly inflated at the cold temperature ratings found inside your door jamb.

If you’re burning a little oil (as evidenced by black soot at your tailpipe) maybe spend $10 and replace your PCV valve too. Automobile engines, if you want them to last, take a little preventative maintenance to prevent a lot of expensive repairs.

Gumout as part of a regimen, fits well into that program.

This is a great product and its make a world of difference. I will always use this in my my Car. It keeps the Direct injection and port injection clean, bumps up the MPG and Octane level. It doesn’t hurt your factory Convertors and keep the tank free of water contaminants.

I have used these products in all of my vehicles. You can definitely tell a difference in throttle response once this is add.

I couldn’t figure out why my 2004 dodge neon would spit and sputter on start up & when first eccelerating from a stopped position. our local autozone employee recommended stp fuel injector cleaner. I admit that I was a little skeptical as to whether or not it would work.

I bought a couple bottles antways and added one to my cars fuel and man. what a difference it made. the spit & sputter went away. the car feels so much different driving now. amazing!!!.

I have bought this product several times and every time I leave it in my trunk (so that when I get gas I can use it in the gas tank, at each fill up ) and one of the things I’ve noticed is apparently it can’t handle the heat for Texas.

Because the bottles will loosen the aluminum seal under the cap and they will spray all over the inside of your trunk. This has happened several times,,, the bottles leak terribly. So if you’re going to buy it and use it immediately then I recommend it.

If it’s going to be your car for a couple of days,,, be careful where you sit it ,,,because it will spill every single time out of the bottle. The last time I used a bottle, it only had about half of the engine additive in it because the other half had spewed out all over the place in my car.

I bought two of these because there was a sale: buy 1 get 1 free so that’s the only reason I got this specific brand or else I would’ve gotten whatever was cheapest. I’m a very frugal shopper so at the time that was the best deal.

All I had to do was pour this whole bottle right into the gas tank. that’s it!!! Almost hard to believe it’s so easy right? I started noticing results almost immediately (the next day). Would recommend and use again!.

About 3 years ago, in my 4. 0L, 2006 Mustang, it had developed a slight rough idle and had been going on for 5 years or so. I always use Top Tier gasoline, and read about Top Line, being the top cleaner performer.

After 2 Red Line bottle treatments and following directions, it idled like a brand new engine. I retired in 2008, and it has seen mostly city driving or 3000 miles a year. Once a year, the past 3 years, I get the usual full synthetic oil change and around that time, I also add a bottle of Red Line.

I highly recommend Red Line Fuel System Cleaner. I also add it to our 2019 Ford Edge SEL once a year, or at 6000 miles. We live in Wisconsin.

Started using Red Line Fuel System Cleaner a little over 6 years ago. In 2013 I purchased and new Chrysler 300. I was accustom to putting in a fuel system cleaner every other oil change. I checked with the service manager and he recommended Red Line.

Told me that Fiat/Chrysler recommended Red Line for all their cars. I have never used anything since. My Red Line Story: My neighbor has a large riding mower and one day it was missing so bad it just died.

He started it again and of course it was still popping and missing. I asked him if he would let me put a small amount of Red Line in his gas tank to see if it would help. I put in about 1/4 a bottle and we shook the tank best we could.

When he started up again. it was still missing and popping, but within a minute it started to smooth out some and within 3 to 5 minutes it was running smooth. He was stunned! He took it for a couple of rounds of mowing and not a miss or pop.

He came back over and again asked me what in the world is that stuff? My mower is running like it’s new! To say the least, he is now a loyal user of Red Line Fuel System Cleaner. I’ll say this, when it comes to F.

S. Cleaners, you get what you pay for.

Recently used this on a road trip, & it raised my mpg from 33 to 40. To be fair, I have a newer vehicle (2019 Crosstrek) & use cruise control a lot which saves on gas anyway. To counteract some cruise efficiency, my cruise setting is on dynamic, the fastest pickup option, Redline fuel injector still impressively boosted my mpg.

Taking into consideration all of these factors, this product works when instructions are fully & properly followed. Best fuel injector I have tested to this day.

I bought an Acrua RDX 2016 Advance with 150K miles. Note the vehicle has been maintained from day zero in Acura Dealership. The engine felt a bit jerky, and as I haa a bottle of Chevron Techron I poured it when filled the gas first time.

I also changed the air filter and cleaned the air intake sensor. The engine sounded and responded a bit bette, but what I expected, as I owned Acuras prior to this one. Anyway, today I went to Exxon gas station and poured one bottle of purple in it, and then refuled the tank with the supreme gas.

Wow! The engine almost immediately “changed the sound” and it is so responsive now. Too early to tell about the mileage, as I drive in the stop and go traffic mainly, and Acuras are so bad in this type of traffic, but will report on it.

Definitely buying two more bottles while on the rollback! I am amused and cautious, but this thing could be for real!.

Many post 2003 vehicles no longer have a inline fuel filter from the factory. So the strainer in the tank is all thats keeping your fuel filtered. Granted modern fuels are filtered from the pump. The issue is modern fuel also has up to 10% ethanol content.

Ethanol tend to corrode components like injectors and FPR’s. Running a bottle of this will great smooth out your idle and acceleration. Saying that I’m a 18 year + technician and I notice more then most people do.

So some may not notice it as much as others. Its not octane booster so its not “increasing” performance, its cleaning out the fuel system and burning some carbon off the valves and pistons. So dont expect “tire shredding” performance in a bottle.

Its more of a maintenance/repair item.

Suzuki Burgman 650 (2007) was misfiring at idle. Put in about 1/3 of a bottle of Chevron Techron concentrate fuel system cleaner and at 40 miles it started to run better. By 60 miles it had solved the problem.

I now use only Chevron fuel because it has the same additive that the fuel system cleaner uses. By the way. hate ethanol fuels for small older engines. thought the problem was related to water in fuel BUT.

Seafoam did not help.

2012 GMC Acadia had been intermittently stuttering while under gentle acceleration or while going up hills. Thought I’d try this product just in case…. IMMEDIATELY zero stuttering, and good acceleration.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that this cleaner worked so quickly. It’s been one full tank, so now we’ll see if the favorable results continue.

I had tried many different brands of fuel system cleaners, and none ever had particularly good results. For a while, Chevron Techtron was about the best that one could buy, until the advent of AMSOIL P.

I. Performance Improver. The AMSOIL version was the very first in giving a noticeable improvement at once. “At once” like when leaving the gas pump. I’ve been buying AMSOIL P. I. Performance Improver for years now.

And whenever I buy a used car, the first thing I do is add two bottles of AMSOIL P. I. Performance Improver and fill it up with Shell V-Power gasoline. That’s a truly great combination to clean out a neglected fuel system.

I also use it every couple of thousand miles in my cars for maintenance. I buy it by the case and keep it on hand for my use and if someone else runs into a fuel issue. The only thing that I don’t like about it has been the change to the red bottle.

YUK! I liked the former bottle much-much better, both in appearance and in being able to see the actual product through the clear bottle.

Read reviews online and publications from Amsoil, but after searching various forums where I knew information would be as unbiased as possible I decided to try this. I used it in three different vehicles, 2001 Land Rover Discovery (4.

0 V8 160K), 2008 Chevy Tahoe (5. 3 V8 157K) and 2015 (3. 5 V6 40K) Jeep Wrangler. Each had different results. The Land Rover immediately idled smoother. It is a torquey but low HP motor so performance seemed about the same.

Nonetheless, definitely smoother across the board. The Tahoe had been idling a bit rough prior to use and everything had been cleaned up as much as possible following a head removal for lifter fix recently.

I suspected injectors since I knew there were no other vacuum leaks or issues. This truck was the one that triggered the search for injector cleaners to see what the market looked like. By the end of the tankful it idled almost like it did when I first got it and it got REALLY quiet when at idle.

Mid to upper RPM full throttle pulls felt MUCH stronger. 3500-5000 RPM it pulls hard now. I forgot how strong this engine was. Smooth since then two tankfuls ago. The Jeep didn’t change much. It had been running mostly fine, but it was the one of the three that I noticed white smoke from much like a direct injection of cleaner through an intake.

Despite being the lowest mileage of the group it gets the most city driving and start and stop as well as slightly longer oil change intervals. I suspect it built up a relatively high amount of carbon for age.

I’ve tried products in other vehicles and this appears to be the only one where I’ve noticed differences beyond the placebo effect. Like most Amsoil products it is not “cheap” but whatever cleaners they put in this it is VERY concentrated.

Injector cleaning and carbon removal seem substantial. I wish I would have put a borescope in the cylinders just to see what it did exactly. I would recommend.

As with all AMSOIL treatments, this one is no different – it’s a must-have for any gas automobile. I use one bottle in my Grand Marquis every 3-4000 miles and my mpg’s stay between 19-20 in town (which is 2-3 mpg above the EPA’s average estimate for the little 4.

6L). 28-30mpg on the highway at 70mph. YEAH. Of course, every fluid in my car is AMSOIL, from differential to engine oil to coolant. I run Sig series 5W-20 with an EA011 filter every 10,000 and I use a WIX 46814 air filter (nothing special in terms of air flow).

I also have a coolant filter with the Donaldson P554685 filter running AMSOIL HD coolant. With all of the positives of my AMSOIL-fan-boy tendencies, it really is the best stuff on the market for keeping your engine in tip-top shape.

But buyer beware, if you’re going to use any fuel treatment from AMSOIL (including the diesel treatments, which I use on my 6. 0 – which also runs like a top), have a Swiss Army knife to help you open the lid.

The child safety mechanism doesn’t work and it’s impossible to open the lids without either cutting the lid off or using a pair of channel locks to vise it off. And of course, there is a foil tab underneath the lid that is also very hit-and-miss.

I’ve found that out of a case of 12 (of any fuel treatment), at least 3 of the safety tabs under the lid are defective. They either leak in the box (wasting the precious fuel treatment) or are impossible to remove without a tool (which is counter to the pull-tab design).

If you have purchased this as you are concerned about the so-called quality of supermarket fuel, which may or may not omit some beneficial addititives that are supposedly in the fuel from the big branded forecourts (and I have seen contradictory articles regarding this); and this was a recommended purchase to add each time you fill up your car.

Well, the cost of a bottle of this is probably more than the saving you make each time you use a supermarket forecourt so you perhaps may just as well pay the extra for the “premium” fuel at the pump or from one of the larger fuel providers.

Truth is, I don’t know eithert way. I am sure that adding this isn’t doing any harm but without proper research from experts, I can’t say either way whether adding this will make a difference or is worth the money spent.

Naturally the blurb on the bottle writes soothing words to the extent of it’s worth and effectiveness but I can’t say either way.

Have used Redex system cleaners for years in both Petrol & Diesel formats and both do a great job. This is tough to review as I cannot see inside the injectors or DPF etc. however the vehicle is running well and clean.

This is a 2-tank bottle (i. e. pour in half a bottle per fill-up) and so good value. Would recommend.

Realising that this won’t be an immediate drastic improvement, but long term the initial results seem good. I’m definitely getting more response from the car on acceleration. 50mpg around town and the engine seems smoother.

Yes this is on a 66 reg Clio and I’m using Shell diesel. I’ve just got the car so it’s still adapting to my driving style. Only time will tell regarding the results. The product comes nicely packaged, but with one upside down so it fits.

There is no doser with this and it’s a little tricky to get it in the fuel tank hole without putting too much in, in one go. You literally need to offer it into the hole and quickly pull it out and down in one motion.
