amazon. com/dp/B08FY1G4X5/While testing it, the motor carried me on the bike up a long hill at 17. 2mph as measured by my phone. On flat terrain, I got around 20. 5 mph. I am 5’11” and 185 lbs. My neighbors came out to see what was going on and check out the bike, and now they all want to convert their bikes, too.

A couple of things to note:-The Product details says: “Suitable Tire Size – 20″ x 1. 75″ to 2. 1. ” That seems too narrow to me. I used a slightly wider 20 x 2. 25″ tire, and it seems like it is about as narrow as one would want to go.

It looks to me that a 20 x 2. 6″ or a 20 x 2. 8″ tire would fit even better. I can’t imagine what a 1. 75″ wide tire would look on this, if it would even work at all. -Once installed, it was obvious that the wheel arrived way out of balance.

This will require some maintenance to get the wheel balanced-The bag is too flimsy by itself, and flops to one side or the other. I was able to put a cardboard box in it to give it rigidity to stay upright on the rack.

Overall, I am satisfied with the purchase, and will seriously consider this vendor’s offering on the 24″ version once I begin the conversion on my son’s bike.

We bought this to convert an off-road scooter into electric so we weren’t limited on 95% downhill terrain. My husband is pretty educated with road bikes assembly and parts, but this was a little different and he ended up having to take the wheel and tire into a bike shop because it wouldn’t seem to fit although our tire was within the specs.

The bike shop managed to make it work and recommended we tape the wheel as well. Getting to back onto the scooter was a bit of a hassle too and involved some major adjustments to the brakes and needing a second person to get the wheel onto the forks (not to mention we put it on backwards the first time.

make sure the cords are coming out of the RIGHT side of the wheel). But now with everything assembled, it works great and we just ordered a second one for our other scooter. I purchased a 36V 12. 5ah battery off eBay and it works great for both of us (hubby is just under 150 lbs so we’re not super heavy) although on really steep hills, it did struggle a bit, but held a consistent speed on flat ground and lasted a really long time while we were trying to drain it (going to guess around 18 miles).

Overall very pleased.

I bought this kit to replace my old 500Watt brushed hub-motor on my Giant Revive. I have my wife’s revive sitting next to/behind mine (in the uploaded picture) and you can see the Hub-Motor is about the same size.

The rim was “True” out of the box and the wheel fits well, I had to open my front fork a little over 6 Millimeters to seat the wheel get the anti-spin guides in place. I wish the kit came with some rim tape for the spoke heads.

Before using this wheel make sure you invest in a roll of heavy duty wheel/rim tape, it ships with no tape at all. The spokes are a little sharp and will push through most thin rubber tape (I learned this the hard way.

Flat after about three miles of riding). While the wheel is much lighter than my old 500 watt, it is about the same size and has about the same and maybe a little more power. I am a 6’2″ 330lb guy and this wheel pulls me nicely at about (you need to pedal to start up unlike a brushed motor) 17mph without pedaling.

And with pedaling, I can easily maintain a 20-23mph ride around Sterling and down the W&OD trail outside of DC. I have an 80psi Kevlar-Ribbed tire and inflating to the full 80psi did not cause any issues with the rim or it’s true.

The Paperwork that comes with the ebike kit says it is manufactured by CNEBikes in Changzhou city ,Jiangsu ,China. I contacted the vendor “AWInternational” to see if they sold a Pedal Sensor or the advanced computer.

They do not, they are strictly a reseller of products and not experienced e-bike products and have no way of contacting the manufacturer (you will have to do that on your own if you want anything besides the basic 2016 kit)Aside from the reseller, I am very happy with the kit, the product it would be better with a pedal assist sensor (this is in the 2017 kits from CNEBikes).

I purchased this for bigger hills, and for more torque a low speed. It has all that. There is no display to see the inner workings of this ehub motor. I do like to know technical information, I would rather read.

Even so, I do not want to be looking at a display while riding in the woods. The inner rim width is 30mm. I had to find a tire 60mm-75mm width recommended in Schwalbe tires desciption about rims and tires.

This translates to 2. 4 inch tires for me, and that is exactly what I wanted. The hub is sturdy and that is what I want for a woods ebike.

I converted my 20 inch Schwin Loop foldable bike. Pretty easy to put together. Only hard part was connecting the power connector to the battery. I had to cut and solder it with an xt60 connector from my used Ebay battery to the controller.

I bought and old 36 v 10 ah Lion. The rim for the wheel was a little big so my front brake was not usuable. I would have to buy a large break wire, so I only use the back breaks. No PAS, but I really don’t miss the PAS.

I would recommend it. This was my first built.

I RECEIVED THIS THING IN 2 DAYS! WOW! Ok, though I haven’t ridden it yet, ( waiting for battery) I have installed it on the bike. And so far I can say this. The kit arrived well packed & undamaged. Upon inspection, everything seems to be a well made, quality product.

The rim itself is a nice heavy duty, double wall construction, 12g spokes, etc. The install could not have been easier. Very simple. It’s practically plug & play. At this point I have zero complaints.

Very happy with product. Only thing I would change is I wish it had a twist throttle grip instead of the thumb throttle. Can’t wait to ride! Thanks!.

The assembly as mentioned in the ad was easy. However I did not anticipate removing my original brakes for theirs. It could not be done because my brakes and the gear shift were one assembly. Also they send you way too much wire for the parts being used.

There is no way to cut it down to fit your bike so you end up wrapping it should your bike frame and handle bars. In the end it is a big mess. If they would provide a way to trim the wire the conversion would be good.

I’m an industrial designer and I spend a lot of time looking at the way things are made. The mechanical bits on this wheel are SOLID. The wheel itself is double-walled and made of relatively thick steel and the handlebar accessories (including all the switches and brake levers) are suitably well made.

There are a couple questionable plastic pieces here and there in non-critical locations which, given the apparent quality of everything else, don’t feel like they belong. The instruction manual is pretty straightforward as well.

This is not a normal bike wheel; it is as wide as indicated in the description of the item. Other reviews have been unfairly critical because the wheel doesn’t fit into the forks on whatever bike they wanted to electrify.

If you don’t have a fat bike fork, this wheel will not fit- it’s not even close. I’ll update the review once I get some mileage on the motor. If there’s no update here, assume everything went really well.

Its so damn fast. Great enrry level emtb. Very smooth to ride. And the pedal assist feature is so fun to mess with. Bike rides that would leave you sweaty and legs full of lactic acid are a breeze now.

Climbing up hill is a non isue. The range is somewhat small if you keep the assist maxed out but it charges very fast too. 2021 is a great buy. Ill probably buy another one down the line that is even faster and more range.

Very addictive. Cant go back to biking normal anymore. Park trails feel like a roller coaster.

I’ve got about 200 miles on my bike now. It was delivered in late May. The battery appeared to be mostly charged when I got it, it only charged for a few minutes (20-30) before the light turned green and I was off for a quick shakedown spin around the block.

The manual isn’t the best. I couldn’t figure out how to turn the bike on until I found a hidden switch at the bottom of the down tube. No mention of it at all in the manual that I could find. Haha. But I love this bike.

Solid all the way around, with great brakes. Great acceleration with the throttle. be careful! My battery range has also been excellent. My first ride was 40 miles, and I still had 2 bars showing when I got home.

I stay mostly in 1 and 2 PAS levels, 3 or 4 on bigger hills if needed, and 5 only on extremely steep hills (a couple of 14% recently were a bit tough). I really like the color display and the fact that the battery is fully enclosed in the down tube.

I installed a rack to the back with a seat post attachment, and now have a nice bag to carry my tools, pump, patch repair, first aid, snack and extra clothing, as necessary. The tires are really knobby and very nice for riding through all the debris on the road.

Bought 3 of these Voilamart 1000w 48v front conversion kits at the same time, all 3 had the same problem: Bent axles/tight bearings and REALLY noisy controllers. The bend in the axle makes it feel like you have a tyre fitted unevenly, I had to put every wheel in a vice and bend the axle straight, yes the metal used is quite soft (metal from China is notorious for being soft).

The bearings start off tight and bind bud do free up after about 20 miles, but does make you wonder on the quality of them, hence why I have ordered a few sets of SKF bearings ready for when one bikes set fails.

As for the controllers, most now use sine wave controllers, these are quiet and smooth, but no, not Voilamart! They use nasty really cheap square wave controllers, this makes the motor sound like a drill when accelerating and cruising with a buzz like a swarm of bees are following you.

Also the controller is supposed to output 1000w, I used mine with a Turnigy 100 amp watt meter and it draws 580w peak up a hill under load, a far cry from the 1000w! Ditch the controller for a real 1000w sine wave one! All in all, the actual motor is ok if you are prepared to replace bearings at some stage and possibly need to straighten the axle.

The kit is worth the 115 I paid, but no more seeing as you will need toreplace the controller (which will mean also replacing the throttle) which is another 50 on top.

In the blurb, this company refers to German engineering. Be assured this is not. I have the 1000w front wheel version and asked if it would accommodate a disk brake. It wont unless as the company said please buy another one They say no one else has had this trouble but check the internet and they have.

Some have filed the calliper to fit the <18mm clearance and some found they could stretch the forks. I could try and spend another 50-80 on a new calliper in the hope it will fit but would not have bought this if I knew I had to do that.

The build quality overall is poor and even the bag to hold the controller broke on the first day. The throttle handle contains the very delicate on off switch which is too easy to catch and cause problems mid stroke!.

I installed this kit on my wifes Giant bicycle. We live in the foothills and she uses her bike to go down to the farmers market. It is all uphill on the way home, so with saddle bags and fresh produce, its quite the challenge.

But, Not any more!! I coupled this kit with a rack mounted 12mAh battery kit and as the title says So Far, So Good. It took me a few days (working in the evenings after work) to install the kit. I had originally opted for the twist throttle that comes with the kit, but due to the gear select configuration of her bike, I ordered a thumb throttle thru amazon and replaced the twist throttle.

Everything was pretty straight forward during install, even without using the supplied directions, its pretty easy to identify and hook up the proper connectors. Also, I did not utilize the velcro attaching bag for the controller, instead I used tamper bit screws (for anti theft) and mounted the controller to the rack, under the battery, and essentially under the saddle bags.

Once everything was mounted and installed, it was time for first test ride. Like a few other reviews have mentioned, the pedal assist is a bit aggressive and not really that smooth at low speeds. You start to pedal lightly off of a stop, and the pedal assist kicks in pretty hard.

I did find a user manual for the display unit online that allowed me to go into the controller settings and dial back the assist level a bit. This seems to have taken some of the aggressiveness out of the assist, but its still a bit strong off the bat at slow speeds.

Once your up and cruising, the assist modes are great. With that said, when your cruising along and dont necessarily require pedal assist, its easy enough to just turn it off and utilize the twist (or thumb) throttle control instead.

My wife found the manual control more convenient while riding in stop and go situations, than the pedal assist mode. All and all, this is a pretty powerful motor and appears to be pretty well built. Im happy with the purchase so far.

Weve only been able to put one ride on the bike (about 20 miles) since install and the battery is still above 3/4 charge. It carries me up some pretty steep inclines in the 750 Watt mode and Im 200 pounds.

The only real downfall, in my opinion, to a kit like this is the additional weight that all the new components add. The battery and the electric motor specifically. You really notice it when youre riding.

Then again, you have instant torque at your fingertips, sooooooo, Ride On!! Hope this review is of some help.

I bought this to convert my old mountain bike into an electric bike. Fitting although i took my time and was upgrading brakes, gears and cables at the same, i was surprised how easy it was. Although, the hardest part was taking the crank arm off for the sensor as it was really stuck.

Fitting the wheel, it slipped into the drop outs perfect. I added two torque arms for safety and the C washers provided with the torque arms, sadly some dremmel work needed there to make them fit, although this had nothing to do with this kit.

Wiring went smoothly, taking my time with the routing before committing the plastic spiral covering. You cant go wrong with the plugs. Adding the brake levers and throttle was easy. I also renewed my gear selectors to the rotary type, just to have a cleaner look, as the handlebars are cluttered enough.

I choose to buy a bigger frame bag as my bottle battery would not fit the bottle bracket. This had the advantage of being able to fit the battery extra wiring and controller, at a squeeze. It goes pretty good, if you want on roads that allow it, you can take it upto the max 22mph they quote.

Otherwise keep legal with the blue wires. This is a brilliant upgrade and for your average handy man, cyclist. should not pose many problems fitting. Infact all of the minor adjustments to make this work, were not related to anything in this kit.

I am very happy with my purchase so far. as long as it lasts it will be money well spent. As an aside, it used to take me 8 minutes to get to work on my motorbike. now its 10 minutes on my conversion.

Although this is good value and worked the pedal assist has no levels and is either full on or off. To get more subtle PAS control you will need a better controller (KT) and a display (LCD3 or 5). The descriptions of this kit do not tell you that the pedal assist acts as just a switch to full power.

Look for a kit that has an LCD display that will allow you to set PAS levels. That said the components seem to be of good quality and fitted and worked well together.

As more electric conversions become available, this one is a stand out. The instructions are clear and even mention putting the wheel wiring to the right side to make the bike go forward. The conversion itself takes less than an hour and the results are well worth the effort and the price.

This kit does work nicer on a bike with lever shifts rather than twist shifts as the throttle is a twist throttle. I used a 10. 2 amp 48 volt lithium pack and passing a radar sign was easily seeing 20 mph.

I have seen some reviews that say 30 to 35 mph but I have not seen that. Perhaps with a different controller that is possible. My previous electric conversion was greatly helped by a new controller and speed increased from 12 to 18 mph.

Still the build quality on this wheel is fantastic and whole kit is what you expect from Voilamart. One last thing, the controller has a connection to keep the speed to 12 mph, a legal requirement in some jurisdictions.

My wife got me to hook the switch on her bike as she felt the bike was to fast without it. Great addition to any bike. Trips to the corner store are much easier, and more fun.

I installed this on an eahora x 7 ebike. The bike was working pretty good, but was lacking enough power to pull up steep hills. I bought this kit to put on the front wheel. The motor is powerful and amazing.

With both motors I can go up any hill with just electric power only. I’ve gone 25 miles on a charge on steep dirt trails. I’m sure you could go much further on pavement or more level terrain. I would recommend using the torque arms that go on the axles.

I’m using the 48 v 13a UPP battery that seems pretty good so far.

I didn’t want to make this review before my first ride, it was short one:20 miles. i received it with 3 miles which i believe is what they use for test. Used just one bar of battery as you can see in the picture so i’m pretty sure i can make 50-60 miles with a full charge battery.

I use it in “1” all the time because i want to exercise. i’m almost of the weight limit of this bike and 5. 11 tall and I can tell is just fine, the bike offer a very comfortable ride. In future i will probable change the tires for slicks instead of mountain because i use this bike on the trail.

I tried in “5” and brings me up to 26 mph while at “1” i was able to pace at 16-17 mph on a flat road. I’m not sure how much life the battery will have or if the bike will rust but i can see a very high quality bike with Shimano shift.

The bike needs a little bit more adjustments as indicated but nothing you can not do your self if you know what you are doing. I fully recommend this bike for its comfortability, good looking, sturdy and price.

I had been looking at purchasing an e-bike conversion kits for a while as I love my current bike. ITs light weight and fits me well and most ebikes are heavy and clunky. I have an RV and usually take the mountain bike with me.

Regarding the actual riding, the conversion kit is great. If you are looking at creating a motorcycle or comparing it to a 1000w e-bike then I’m afraid you may be disappointed. If your looking for a kit that provides peddle assistance when required, this does the trick.

Dont get me wrong I can cruise at full assit on flats for endless miles. I use regularly and find riding up inclines a breeze. I would recommend the conversion kit and in fact I’ve bought one for the wife’s and kids mountain bike too.

We both look forward to taking our bikes on our travels, as we love exploring new towns. I did have some connectivity issues at start, but we were able to find it was the battery on/off. It was faulty and a new one was sent out asap.

The kit also did not fit my wifes front forks well. The motor would rub on one side, but there were some extra washers in the kit that made this issue go away. Worse case we were going to go buy a new fork, but problem solved.

To end both my wife and I are happy with the conversion kits!.

I just want to give my honest opinion on this bike as it seems there is so much BS out there on what makes a good ebike or what specs to get. I was constantly told this would be too small of a battery or too small of a motor.

Let me tell you this is a quality unit with parts from reputable manufacturers. I’m 210lbs and this thing is amazing. I routinely go 13-15 miles on full assist before the battery dies. Half assist I can go 30 miles, but what’s the fun in that :).

Yes, you will need to peddle some uphill as with any ebike. With this ebike thought even a large hill I never had to stand up and really get into it. It’s like one peddle is four now. I’m in love and bought many more for Xmas presents.

Hi all. Further to my earlier review I thought I’d give an update. I’ve had this kit on my bike for almost six months. I find the battery holds it’s charge very very well. My bike is a 10 year hybrid and it is a joy to ride and was my main reason going with a kit.

My rides are between 50 – 70 miles long. I prefer to use my thumb throttle on hills etc as well as peddling. Great for cardiovascular workout.

I am totally amazed at the torque this motor develops. I put this kit on a 25 year old Giant bicycle with a 3 x 7 gear. I live on a boat and the bicycle is now my means of transportation when I pull into port.

For that reason I am usually hauling a cargo trailer that can handle up to 180 lbs of cargo. This motor pulls it up hills with no problems. I set the speed limiter on the controller because it was getting up to speeds I was not comfortable with on a bicycle.

My complaints are few: >Instructions to set up the LCD control interface are a bit vague in some cases, but nothing you can’t figure out with a little common sense. >The one piece cadence sensor did not fit on my bike so “peddle assist” is not used.

I could have replace the cranks to make it work, but decided to do without it. >The bag for the controller is almost too small. With a bit of finagle it fits, but just barely. >Be aware; this kit with the LCD interface comes with a twist throttle.

The sames kit with the LED display comes with a thumb throttle. If you want the LCD display and have twist gear shifters you will need to replace the shifter with a different type. I used Shimano thumb shifters with no problem tuning it to the cassette on the motor.

As for the previous comment, Walmart has limited batteries for ebikes and most are lead/acid type. I ordered a 48 volt 20 amp/hour battery through DHgate at a reasonable price for Li-ion batteries. It took 3 weeks to receive from the Chinese manufacturer.

DHgate has a wide verity of battery sizes and mounts listed.

I’ve logged 96 miles on this device and very pleased although for my situation I think I probably should have gotten the rear wheel kit. I live in the hilly terrain of the Arkansas Ozarks and after recent rains we have places where gravel and sand washed over the roadway.

On one of those places on a hard uphill pull my front wheel spun out and I lost control. I have since learned how to avoid such an experience but I’d like to suggest to any potential buyer if your situation is anything like mine that you consider very seriously getting a rear wheel kit as the weight distribution puts a big percentage on the rear wheel hence much better traction.

I especially like the combination of the pedal assist system (PAS) with the throttle control. One of the places where this shines is at a stop sign (or light) and it is time to go while you have one foot down.

You can just crack the handlebar mounted throttle lever for just an instant to get you moving and then you are set up for pedal power, Carefull though. The throttle lever has enough umph to spin the front wheel and if this happens while in a hard turn your bike can do unpleasent things you had no idea it could do.

Personal experience here, Another neat thing I like is, I set the maximum speed down to 12mph. This allows me to pedal over the maximum speed on the level where it is easy going using ONLY pedal power but if I come to a hill, and my speed drops below the max setting the “juice power” kicks in automatically and I can maintain my comfortable cadance by also using the bike’s gear settings.

If I find I need even more “go” I can just thumb down the throttle and I really blast up then at full thrust. I am 75 years young and I installed this kit on my old 7 speed Shwinn which has served me well over the years and until age caught up with me I navigated these hills very seldom having to hop off and push.

Now with this kit, with only few exceptions, I can sail over our terrain far better than I used to could do when I was much younger. So in case you are wondering, I do recommend this kit to you. If it holds up for 2000 charges, it should last a long time and for many miles.

If I last that long, I will be a happy camper.

Why did I buy the kit: I’m 74 years old and very active. My winters include 3 months in Florida where I play tennis 3 times a week. In previous years, this involves a 10 mile ride to tennis, a couple hours of play, then a 10 mile ride home.

Can’t do that anymore. So I decided to go with an e-bike conversion kit. Likes: Prompt shipping, excellent customer support, reasonable price. Assembly was relatively easy with some issues because I was installing it on a carbon fiber frame.

But now that is done, I love the functionality. Good speed with easy pedaling. Haven’t gone “long” on it yet, so I can’t rate distance. Issue with the carbon fiber include: 1. Needed to swap out the carbon fiber fork on my bike for one that could handle the torque of the motor.

I wish the sales pages would have indicated this; or maybe I missed it. The fact was “buried” in the instruction manual. My local bike shop helped with the swap. 2. The geometry of the carbon fiber frame caused me to use some two sided heavy duty adhesive strips for attaching the PAS sensor.

No big deal. but the cable ties just wouldn’t work in the application. 3. My crank arm had to be moved out about a 1/8″ inch to allow the PAS sensor magnet wheel to be installed. Also the crank diameter was too wide for the magnet wheel to be installed as designed.

But I “trimmed” down the little tabs so it would go on. All is well. Overall I loved the challenge and enjoy the bike. My LBS is considering getting into that line of business based on his exposure to the product and the install experience we shared.

I purchased the kit for my Santa cruz Mountain bike and discovered that the rack mount for the battery would not work on my bike due to no crew holes in the frame to mount the rack. i donÛªt recall any mention of that on the website prior to purchasing the kit.

I ended up putting it on an old FUGI bike I had and it had the rack mount tiles for the rack. I went to install the rack and discovered that the bottom brackets were missing from the packaging in the kit.

i called customer service and they sent out the missing brackets right away no questions asked. i then went to install the rack and discovered that they donÛªt provide the machine screws necessary to mount the rack to the bike.

I proceeded to go to my local bike shop and got the screws necessary to mount the rack for a few bucks. once i got the rack on I started to install the rest of the kit. I thought the instructions sent with the kit were not very clear or helpful.

I went to youtube and found a few videos which were more helpful but not very detailed and left a lot to the imagination. I found that installing the Pedal Assist ring and little sensor was quite a challenge as well.

The documentation on this is not to good either. Again went to youtube and found a video(not from this kit seller) that had enough information to finally figure out the proper installation. The wiring and other components clicked together nicely.

When I finally finished installing the kit, which took all in all about 4-6 hours in total over 2 days, I took it out for a spin at 1:00 am to see if it was going to work. Bingo, it ran great right off the bat.

i was happy and i guess surprised that I got this thing installed and i worked. Anyway, in general I really like the kit now that it is installed, and would recommend it to others looking to upgrade.

I wish I could have gotten it on my SantaCruz bike but having it on this bike is still fun. Now that I have installed this kit I will be able to do it much faster the next time. Also, when i went to charge the battery I found that the charging cord that was sent was for Euro plug.

Again I called support and they sent out a replacement right away.

Great product overall and an easy workaround if you are upgrading to boost forks and need to fit a 100mm hub. (I upgraded to a Rock Shox Pike Ultimate with a 100mm stock front hub) Installing the rotor spacer was easy and pretty basic, but lining up the fork spacers and getting them to stay in the torque cap spots in the fork is a bit frustrating while installing the Maxle is installed since the spacers sit loose and they fall out easily.

Besides this one minor drawback, this is great solution for boost forks. After about 6-7 rides, there is no noticeable flex or wiggle in the front wheel. They keep it locked down. The price point also makes it a win.

If you are doing the boost fork w/ a 100mm hub, this is a super cheap and easy solution to get back on the trail.

There were many options online, but I went with the Problem Solver brand. It allow me to run a non Boost front hub (100mm width) with a newer Boost (110mm) width fork. Worked flawlessly and Cambria Bike was one of the only places that had it.

I always check out Cambria Bike for any of my cycling needs my LBS does not stock. Very fast processing and shipping, all my purchases with them go well.

You guys made it possible to run my favorite wheel on my new bike!!! I blew up the stock wheel and was in quite the slump because I didn’t have $400 to dump into a new wheel. Then it dawned on me, with this little guy I could run the wheel setup on my trail bike on my new bike! Easy to install, and away I went.

Don’t lose the axle spacer though – this is a little guy that with a little glue would probably stay put on the wheel when you need to pop the wheel off. I of course was in too much of a hurry to do that – but haven’t lost it yet ??.

The Nyon is a very nice computer controller for the Bosch Gen 4 Performance Line Sport motor. I installed it myself, but it took a little bit to do it and there really are no instructions for how to do it.

I searched the internet and found a couple of YouTube videos which helped.

Just fitted this kit to my Trek Rail. Works a treat and the lock function (8. 99 extra) adds another layer of security. Bought this for the map function so that riding in unfamiliar places means that I dont need to keep stopping to check google maps.

It could use better installation instruction. it took 1.5 hours and few scratches ) . If i would retrofit a second bike it would take 15 minutes and no scratches !

For the money, and the Leeds reputation, I expected better design. The strength of the motor and battery have been great, but the “pick up disk” located on the hub has been nothing but frustrating. Horrible, horrible, design for such an integral piece of the system.

Seriously, it reminds me of using a clothespin to hold a playing card in my spokes when I was a kid, and it’s about as durable. More often than not I a have to use the throttle to power the bike because power assist is not picking up information from the hub.

I’ll probably try a different brand with my next conversion.

I bought this kit to replace my previous BBS02 mid-drive build, when both the battery and motor (purchased directly from China) failed after a year of heavy all-weather use. I needed something that had some in-country tech support and parts availability.

I also chose to go with a front hub motor this time, as I found that the 500-watt mid-drive would eat through chains and cassettes in about three months with all of the rain and road grit here in Oregon.

My thoughts so far: –It’s essentially a one-speed bike that wants to go exactly 20 mph, sometimes up to 21. On my 26″ wheels, the no-load motor speed is about 22 mph, so above that speed it offers no help and actually contributes a little resistance.

I’m sure I will get used to this, but it does feel like a step down from my mid-drive which could supply a full 500 watts at any speed and would cruise at 26 mph on flats. –The motor is louder than I thought it would be, especially when it is running near top speed which is most of the time if I am cruising at 20 mph on flats.

Again, I will get used to it, but it is louder than the mid-drive which I was not expecting. –The battery indicator drops fairly quickly but then lasts a long time at the 1/4 to 1/2 level. I’m used to indicators that stay full and then drop quickly at the end.

Not a problem, just a difference and I will have to experiment with exactly how far I can go on a charge. A few suggested improvements: –I would like to be able to turn the pedal assist to zero but still have the throttle work.

As it is, turning the pedal assist off also disables the throttle. The main application would be riding on gravel, when I don’t want the motor to kick in while starting (spinning the front wheel) but I still want assist at speed and up hills.

–The water-bottle holder bolts don’t seem strong enough to securely attach the battery. I trust that they have worked well enough in most applications, but I would not be surprised to see the battery break free if I crash or hit a large enough pothole.

–My kit arrived with no instructions, and the online instructions could use some work. I recommend shipping an instruction manual with the kit. I also recommend adding some pictures showing a completed installation.

There was some guesswork involved in connecting the right cables, and also attaching the motor controller to seat-post tube, which seemed like the right place for it. –The rubber seals that cover the charging and USB ports on the battery are very difficult to re-insert, and I suspect they will not last long.

I would like to see a better-engineered solution. What do I like? –Prompt service, staff response, and shipping! –The down-tube battery is sleek, lockable, removable, and well balanced, adding weight and traction to the front-hub drive and lowering center of gravity.

My old system with the battery over the rear wheel was much worse in this regard, and I was not able to secure it to the bike. –The front-hub motor should be more weather-resistant than my bottom-bracket drive; I am hopeful that this will last 2-5 years with minimal work.

I have been enjoying the bike for a just couple weeks now. The bike is quick and powerful. My favorite components are the bottle cage mounted battery with locking feature and the adjustable pedal assist.

I had a couple challenges during assembly. I installed the kit on a 26er mountain bike with oversized aluminum tubing and disc brakes. The first challenge encountered was my front disc brake caliper rubbed on the front wheel hub.

I had to increase the rotor from 160 to 180mm with caliper adapter to stop the rubbing. The diameter of the pedal assist disk was too small for my crankset (Race Face Ride single chainring). I had to cut off ~half of the tabs on the disk to make it fit.

Pedal assist works great now! The plastic box that came with the kit to house the controller didn’t fit on my oversized tube frame. I velcroed and used electrical ties to secure the controller to the seat tube.

I didn’t like having a brake, trigger shifter and e-throttle all on the right side of the handlebar so I purchased and installed a grip shifter. I notice the e-wheel is not laced up over centerpoint of the hub.

Not a problem, just the wheel is off to the right a bit in the forks. I hope some of my adaptations can help other installers:).
