20 Best Fly Control For Horses (2023 Updated)

my horse is just now recovering from a debilitating and expensive bout with lyme. I normally use equi-spot but stopped with the cold weather–big mistake! We had a few warmer days and he got at least one tick bite and eventually developed symptoms.

He has never had a reaction or problems with this product and it has helped to keep him safe before. Most horses can tolerate it just fine and I feel that any risk from the chemicals are less than the devastation of these tick borne illnesses.

BTW I had also used spray on products (both natural and synthetic) when discontinuing the eqi-spot and he still got bitten and ill. We have many many deer tick in my area. I really recommend using it if you do too.

As a note, he didn’t test positive and never had a fever but did have many other symptoms (severe soreness and stiffness, incredible loss of energy etc) and is making a full recovery with minocycline.

Don’t rely on the tests (they are often inaccurate) and listen to your gut if your horse seems unwell. The sooner you catch it the better.

While I didn’t notice a significant reduction in flies on my three horses, I DID notice dead ticks after they came in from the lower pasture. I’ve applied this product, twice, on my three horses, two weeks apart.

I live in the southern Piedmont of NC where plenty of flying, crawling, and otherwise annoying pests and insects are around. I consider this a win. For fly control, my other methods are: 1. disposable fly bags with attractant.

2. compost pile (manure and bedding from run-in sheds. 3. spread manure in pastures often with drag harrow. 4. fly predators 5. fly repellant spray and now 6. Equi-Spot. I’m happy with this purchase and feel the value for the money is equivalent.

Shadow is Maggie’s friend and he has ALWAYS had a real problem with flies! They just love him to bits and he always has big bare bite marks on his chest every summer. Nothing has worked for him, while the other horses are relatively free from flies HE is covered.

NOT ANYMORE! I tried this on him and was amazed the first day that he had no flies, then I expected that the next day the flies would be back, I kept expecting them everyday but for the recomended 3 weeks he has been free of flies! Just dosed him again but this stuff is amazing.

Fortunately, this product arrived much sooner than I expected. Perhaps my situation is slightly different this year. In the high desert of AZ, we are in a more intense monsoon season than previous years.

The flies are horrible and bite with a super sting, even humans. Although sprayed on twice a day, I think I need a stronger fly spray that has a bit more staying power to keep my horses comfortable for most of the day at least during the monsoon this year.

This has been the only fly spray I have used for the last 10 years or more. It’s the only spray that really works. During summer my mare has free access of pasture. I spray her at night an I know she can go out an be fine the next morning.

I love pyranha equine spray and wipe.

I like this product, it smells very good compared to many others. I’ve ordered it several times and am so glad Chewy is selling more and more horse products, as our area has lots of horses but no feed/tack store.

I just received my order, which came quickly, to find the box wet. The bottle was shrink-wrapped. I’m guessing that’s to keep the liquid in if the bottle was compromised. Nothing wrong with the bottle except that the cap wasn’t on tight.

The product leaked out of the shrink wrap. Fortunately I didn’t order any fuzzy toys!.

Sprayed on horses. Flies did not drop and die. They stayed on horse, Buzzed around, came back. Did not work at all. Shook the bottle. I sprayed horses again. Nope, still stomping and tail swishing all day.

Did not work at all. Figured a third does maybe. Now horse is literally wet with spray yet flies still landing on horse. I think they are liking the spay. Stuff just does not work. Stuff was NOT cheap to be so ineffective.

Bringing horses into the barn is no cooler lately than leaving them out, and doing what’s possible to mitigate the flies is a must if they are to stay happy outside. And inside flies are a bigger problem than normal because Country Vet Misters have been unavailable this year.

Endure was “about to go on wild sale” at my local store but so expensive that I gave this a try, and was pleasa surprised. SmartPak’s pricing is much more competitive so when it was time to buy again that’s what I did.

I bought this product because it said rapid knockdown. I sprayed this product and it did nothing. I have cats outside and where I feed them are flies and I cannot get rid of them. Decided to try this needing rapid knockdown but nothing happened.

Spray the flies and as I already said nothIng happens. i used the whole bottle in about 2 weeks.

We like to use this feed thru in combo with fly wasps so that we get a 1-2 knockout attacking the fly larvae in 2 different stages should some get through But Equitrol is the starting place for fly management.

Not just physical manure management through fresh water, mucking your stalls, removing fly odor attractants like urine & manure etc. To avoid loss/waste etc. we pour the scoop into our hand for each horse & they love their special daily “TREAT” & we love knowing we not only made them happy about getting a treat,,, but that they ate it.

without Equitrol feed through, we would not only be bad neighbors but the fly population after a winter of rains would be very unhealthy & uncomfortable for both the equines & humans. We have been using Equitrol for many years.

As long as we have equines, Equitrol will always be at the top of our list for fly management.

First let me say I really am against putting chemicals in my horses bodies. But I have an Azteca mare who is allergic to flies and every year they chew her to bits. I have tried everything – this was a last resort.

We are usually inundated with billions of flies. Now my horses have no fly spray on them, no masks, and no flies. My mare’s legs are perfect. THE OTHER EFFECT OF USING THIS – Last summer we had tons of flies and were feeding 2-3 flakes a day of good hay and grain and they were thin and always hungry.

This year I only give them 1/2 bucket a day of stable mix with the Equitrol, and they are fat and shiny and look fabulous. It has cut down the feed they need by 90%. It is amazing and it really makes you realize how much fighting off flies takes it out of our horses.

I am sure it shortens their lives considerably too. Also no flies on the dogs or in the house. NOTE: You only need to use about 1/2 dose!! I used 1/2 the amount and NO FLIES.

In previous years I used fly predators in my gelding and mares’ stalls and was not getting the results I wanted. So this March, 2016, I started all my horses on Equitrol. All my horses gobble it up, even my finicky Arabian.

I don’t see as many flies in the stalls. Since the weather has gotten warmer, the fly population has picked up but again not nearly as bad as previous years. I will continue to use this product. It definitely helps, alot.

I found about this at a barn of 40 horses the owner required horses be on fly control. We had 7–80% reduction in flies when all horses in stalls and pastures were on this or the slightly more expensive competitor (which is about the same but you feed less as its a bit more concentrated).

This is the more cost effective solution for fly management. This product works if you use it right. It takes at least 30 days to build up and become effective. Also, it’s important to feed the horses the right ratios of it based on weight.

While not everyone in our barn uses this, I notice a difference in my animals’ stalls. I vastly prefer this over fly spray and topical applications.

I purchased this SimpliFly about 2 mouths ago. We notice a difference we still have some flies much less than last year. We also have cattle and neighboring cattle. We learned there is a feed through fly control for cows.

(Feed through fly control for cows is fee choice NOT for horses our cattle are separate from or horses) We are hopeful that with both our horses and our cows on a feed through our fly population will be greatly decreased.

Simplifly works if you feed everyday. The results are seen after feeding for a while your fly population will drop. All animals must be on it. If you have other livestock, don’t waste your time. We only have 1 horse and it has made a HUGE difference.

We started feeding before fly season fully kicked in here in Florida. We use to have other animals along with the horse and it wasn’t effective then because not everyone could be on it. I highly recommend only if you can feed to all your horses.

It does work very effectively.

I always buy swat. It helps keep flies off of sores and also helps heal sores. At least for me. I always have it on hand. I keep one in the barn, horse trailer and wherever my horses are. Saddle bags is also another good place to have one.

I put it in my horses ears about every other day to keep the nats out and helps with the flies. also helps if you put it on their sheaths and bellies.

Love this fly spray! Was not having luck with repelling flies with a different brand and went ahead and bought this one even though it’s more expensive. I live in a hot, dry climate and I have had horses get dry skin.

This product has sunscreen and hair conditioner type benefits which helps my horse’s coat immensely. Plus it actually works to repel the flies. My TB is very sensitive to flies and the pony was getting fly bites on his legs.

Greatly improved with this product. I have better results applying it less often than the previous product plus coats are looking great due to the other skin/coat benefits. I haven’t had to use the coat conditioner I usually use, so it really isn’t more expensive when I don’t have to purchase additional products.

#1 choice doesn’t get 5 stars, have not yet found a bug spray for horse that does get 5 stars. I Within last few years, I used different sprays on my horse. For at least two weeks I’d use one on half of horse and another on the other half of horse.

Which ever side had less bites was then compared with a different product. This was the winner. I have however decreased how much is needed for my horse each season. Less chemicals is better for him, me and earth.

I always give him access to his stall, so he can get away from the super large biting flies/bugs that don’t follow him in their much. This is better than any amount of spray. He has 24/7 access to paddock and stall.

He chooses to be out a lot at night. I get non sting fly predators delivered every 4 weeks. They get 5 stars for decreasing the pesky fly population, that love biting horse and human legs, to 1 % of what it was in past.

I’d love a natural spray on product that was effective. Skidaddle for humans is one that even keeps green heads at bay. They were testing a horse version, but for me the cost was VERY prohibitive.

I’m hoping this works on my two horses, today I was impressed- very hot and humid evening and I hosed down my guys before turnout. The horse flies were all over them as I knew would be the case. I took my bottle of ultra Cruz and sprayed each one real good all over and under.

The horseflies left. I checked on my way out and saw them eating in the pasture with only an occasional tail swishing and no stomping or head throwing from the flies. They were not being bothered by the horseflies and they were still damp from the hosing.

This is great if it works this well as I like to rinse them in the evening after a hot sweaty day!.

I have a grey show horse and with grey comes manure stains, ALWAYS the morning of a show. I’ve used other green spot remover sprays over the years with previous grey horses ive had and they were better than nothing.

I used the UltraCruz at a show last weekend for the first time and WOW was I impressed! It doesn’t just move the discoloration around on the hair, it really and truly CLEANS away the spot. I was telling everyone at the show that the UltraCruz green stain remover was legit and needs to be a staple for anyone with a grey, roan or paint horse!.

I absolutely love this coat spray! It smells similar to the normal shampoo, a nice light scent, and it WORKS. I have used countless different types of coat sprays over the years. I have a grey who lives outside 24/7 and nothing has ever been able to get him this clean, shiny, and soft, and keep him that way.

Usually by a day or two after I use a coat spray, his tail will end up being dirty and I’ll have to use more product. I bathed him almost a week ago and no dirt has stuck on his tail yet, it’s super soft, and it did not irritate his dock.

He has rolled in dirt and gotten rained on and it was easily brushed off. I highly recommend this. Since you don’t have to reapply every day, it will last a long time, too!.

This is the third product of its kind that I have tried this year alone. I’m on my 2nd 6 lb bucket and glad I finally found something that works. Here in southeast Alabama with the humidity and heat the flies are terrible but not while using this product.

I didn’t even have to mask the horses today. It seems more expensive when you purchase it but the scoop is so much smaller than the other brands and one little scoop works even when you have several horses.

I live in south central PA and started my horse and two donkeys on this in mid March. Previous to starting them in Solitude IGR we had some warm days and my horses face was covered in flies. It’s now May and I have not seen any flies on my horses face, have not had to use fly spray on her or the donkeys and have not noticed files in my barn area.

I must say, I have been completely surprised how well it works!!.

Our mare suffered with summer sores all year long and no matter how many times we wormed her, covered her, fly sprayed her and cleaned stalls, she would get sores. Despite all our attempts, she was prone to them and had been most of her life (prior to us buying her).

After spending an enormous amount in vet bills and her suffering several painful surgeries to dig out the fly eggs, I researched and found this product. I started feeding it in January and crossed my fingers.

She has not had one single sore since and now my entire barn is on this product. My vet couldn’t believe the change. We never miss a dose and none of our horses have had those painful sores. You feed a very small amount, so it lasts.

I just bought the larger size since we’ve added more horses to our barn – a much better value.

My poor dog was being bitten relentlessly by flies all day. I tried using home remedies, but nothing seemed to work. I got this spray, and immediately applied it – it works so well! The flies stopped bugging and biting her and finally leave her alone! The only downside is you do have to apply it fairly regularly, but my dog doesn’t seem to mind, as she gets lots of petting and brushing when I apply it.

This spray seemedvto discourage flys for almost 24 hours here. It also did not cause coat to be soiled (I have pintos). It did not leave oily residue as some others have snd horses tolerated well. The only complaint is the dispenser was difficult to use.

I put a different spray head on and that helped a lot.

Smells great, but it doesn’t work like it used to. I used to use Bronco years ago, and it worked pretty good for at least a few days. This time, it doesn’t seem to work at all. It still smells good, but the flies returned almost immediately.

I’ve been spraying almost hourly and my horses are still being attacked by flies.

I used similar products for our dogs for ticks in the past and they seemed to work great. I have purchased this product 3 times and while it helps it certainly does not work for two weeks for flies on horses – maybe a few days at best.

The same type of applicator system works well for dogs as you apply it to their back / shoulders which is a somewhat flat surface and you can drip the stuff straight down. However, trying to squeeze / drip this on to the sides of a horses body, or on their legs, in any sort of controlled manner is a challenge to say the least.

I am using this only in certain area of concern like around ears on my horses for flies. I use a generic squeeze bulb eye dropper type of applicator with glass bottle that I got from my local drug store.

I cut open the tube and transfer it all into the bottle. I then suck it up with the eye dropper squeeze bulb. I can then use this to control exactly where and when I want to drip this stuff on my horse.

Was very hopeful that this product would help with flies, ticks and mosquitoes. It does seem to be helping with ticks and mosquitoes. But, I have to reapply every 5 days to help combat flies even if it has not rained.

Does not help at all with horse flies. Live in Mississippi and the pests are a real force to battle.

This is a great product, does not leave a sticky residue for an extended period like other products. Horses do not mind the sensation of application. Keeps off more ticks than any product I have ever found.

AND it works better with every application! Keep up with a 2 week interval and you will be extremely happy. I trail ride in areas well known to be tick havens, and this product seems to significantly minimize my horses’ accumulations compared to the other horses I ride with.

Which ultimately helps the rider. I also keep my horses in a wooded pasture where ticks are extremely abundant! Very happy with this product!.

I diluted it in vinegar/water mixture I use, works great. The flies fall right off the horse, and avoid the sprayed areas for maybe a few hours. I mostly use it for my mare’s belly and shoulder where she was getting hives from biting flies, and her skin is doing great now.

I spray her morning/night and it does the trick. The smell is nice if a bit strong, but that’s probably why it works lol. My horse and I don’t mind it, and I often get a face full of it thanks to the strong winds out here.

It doesn’t leave any strange residue or feeling either. Will buy again when mine runs out.

I love love LOVE this product! It has a very pleasant smell and the sprayer works very well. I’ve used some products that have a very faulty sprayer that breaks, but this one doesn’t and it’s sprays just the right amount of product to do the job.

Not only this, but it doesn’t give my horse hives like some other products do! My horse has very sensitive skin, and most sprays make his skin break out into hives and dry out his coat. This one doesn’t cause hives or a dry coat.

I love this stuff and will continue to use it.

I purchased a bottle of this fly spray from my local farm store and used it all up, it worked very well. It was separated and had to be shaken. I purchased a bottle from SmartPak and the bottle wasn’t separated and very whitish.

It causes severe irritation and swelling especially on his neck, jaw and chest. I thought he had a reaction to insects, then realized it was from the fly spray. I have not been able to use it on him since.

I’m not sure if they changed the formulation, but I will not touch it again unfortunately.

I have been using these fly boots since 2018. My horse absolutely hates flies and was quickly loosening her shoes from stomping so much. These are now something we just can’t live without! These fly boots stay put and hold up pretty well.

I originally bought the WB size due to my horse’s height but they were a little too big on the front. She wears bell boots so that helped keep them up. I eventually got a second smaller set and used the WB size ones on the back.

I have just replaced that original set of WB size boots this summer. My horse wears these 24/7 from May to October. I got two and a half summers out of the front set that I bought in 2019. My favorite thing about these is that they come down over the top of the hoof.

My horse has scratches over a large portion of her hind coronet bands and pasterns and these boots cover the area well. They are lightweight and don’t seem to over heat her legs even in the hottest weather.

They only have minimal lining in the fetlock area to prevent rubbing and the rest is mesh.

Purchased these for my quarter horse who gets chewed to pieces by flies – what a waste! The first day, he ripped off a velcro strap. I readjusted them daily to secure them better, as they kept sliding around on his legs.

By the third day, he had completely lost one of the boots in the pasture, and the remaining one was so tattered I just took it off him. Definitely not durable at all, and the fit is better suited for a large breed horse – preferably one who doesn’t leave the stable.

This stuff works the best, and lasts longer than the water based products. The price, however, has been going up faster than would be expected. Funny how when something is labeled for horses, the cost goes up again by half versus products with the same ingredients labeled for livestock.

The companies are surely not out to make friends with the horse community!!! I hope Farnam does not get too big for its britches and remembers to keep costs under control for its loyal customers.

If you don’t like Flys on your horse than look no further. I have been using this since I was 11 yrs old. Im 60 now. I’ve tryed other products over the years and always came back to this. I spray or wipe them down throughly in the am.

Lasts all day. I have a hard time finding this in the US where I live so I stumbled upon CORRO online one day. Im so thrilled to be able to have this shipped to my home. CORRO carrys some really good hidse products and ill definitely be looking to them to service my horsey needs.

The flies and gnats were a nuisance to our pets when we take them outside until i used this spray. No more problems. Excellent spray and last a long time!

My feedstore recommended this brand and so far I do think it is more effective than other brands I have used

This fly spray is the only that works on my extremely sensitive, sweats very easily, over reactive chestnut that HATES any flying critter!!!!!

Bye Bye Fly Spray is my go to during the summer months. Sometimes I use it straight; sometimes I cut it half and half with Apple cider vinegar. I usually add more essential oils to it too, to target ticks and later on horse flies.

I use it on my grey mare and yes, it does streak a bit yellow, but not enough to bother anything and certainly worth it to not be bothered by bugs or poison. I also use it on myself and my family at the barn.

Smells great and does the job well. I buy the refill bag. It lasts a really long time and is easy to dispense. The little travel size spray bottle is cute! Fits right in a saddle bag, ready for deer flies and mosquitoes.

Bye-Bye Insect Repellent does many things. First, it smells good. I spray my horse or wipe his face and ears with a cloth I sprayed Bye-Bye on because he does not like his face sprayed. well, who does?? Then, I spray or wipe it on myself.

I would and could never do that with any of the other toxic fly repellents. Second, Bye-Bye lasts forever. The 3 Quart refill pouch lasted me all summer. Since it can be diluted and I use it alongside fly predators, it works really well.

Third, I like the refill pouch for environmental reasons.

I was still having houseflies after using Fly Predators as directed for the past 7 years. This year the nuisance of the multiple houseflies was annoying. No horseflies seen. I bought the Bye Bye Insects repellant and have been spraying it all around my barn, and places to sit, and of course on the horses.

It is mild enough and smells good so I use it on my arms. It seems to deter the flies for a few hours, then I reapply in the afternoon. I just put the last month of Fly predators down so it should help.

Overall this is a big improvement.
