20 Best Fat Supplement For Horses (2023 Updated)

I have a mare and two miniatures who don’t get full rations because they’re such easy keepers. I’ve tried ration balancers with mediocre results that generally led to more excessive weight gain for them.

After testing for metabolic issues for one of the miniatures my vet recommended a forage option and advised to top dress a vitamin/mineral supplement. I’ve always been thrilled with the price and quality of Santa Cruz so I immediately ordered this supplement.

I did not expect the results I got. I put the (now pregnant) mare and both miniatures on it. The mare gets a light feed (about 1lb per day) and the minatures a handful of hay pellets with it. Nothing else changed around their diet.

Not only do they look great and feel great but they all turned 2 shades darker in the height of summer on full day turnout. These horses have been supplemented with copper/zinc for a year and there’s something in here above and beyond.

I’m putting all my horses on it, the cost doesn’t even matter at this point. I’ve rarely run across a feed or supplement that is “just the right thing to do”.

This is the best equine product that I have ever bought! I have a 25 year old TB mare who has always been on the thinner side. She was diagnosed with PPID a year ago and has been a VERY picky eater since then because of the medication she is on for it.

I tried everything for her – all different kinds of feed, alfalfa, beet pulp, oil, shredded carrots in her feed, holding her feed pan up to her nose so she would keep eating, etc, etc. Some days she would eat well, and other days she wouldn’t even finish her grain despite being left in her stall with it all day.

I came across this supplement and figured I’d give it a try – it has been five days since I started it and her eating has been completely transformed. She is eating three meals a day of grain, alfalfa pellets, beet pulp, and oil all mixed together and she LOVES it.

She used to get super distracted while eating and wasn’t interested, now she keeps going until she’s done! I never thought I would get her back to eating so well, and I am so happy that I finally found the solution for her after trying literally everything I could think of.

I have a Tennessee Walker with a C6 cervical birth defect, it’s fairly prominent in thoroughbreds also. The symptoms were he wobbles, does not have good control of his backend. One of the treatments that we’ve had him on is five scoops of this vitamin E powder every day, vitamin E is an excellent anti-inflammatory and it helps his spinal cord with the information.

His mobility is improving. We’ve been on this for two months and he’s able to lay down and get up, he’s not abusing his hocks as badly when he doesn’t 180° turn, his limb control is definitely improving.

A friend who trains racehorses recommended this product, though I ride hunters. She said they feed Vitamin E to many of the racehorses to help with muscle recovery and cell health for faster recovery.

Also helps with muscle soreness and stiffness (which is why I purchased). It definitely helps my teenage guy with flexibility and less stiffness. But he is also a grey and it has made his coat so bright & shiny- an extra benefit! Both trainer and farrier have commented on his beautiful coat.

I love this Vitamin E supplement. I started both of my horses on this, both for different reasons after talking to my vet/trainer/just reading more about how it is a great all around supplement to have your horses on.

Both are doing fantastic on it. My TB lives on a grass pasture 24/7. I started him on this for the neurological and muscling benefits. We’ve been working on building proper muscle tone and he has been working very hard so I didn’t want him to be sore/stiff.

We were also worried about some neurological issues with him as he was giving slight signs of potential issues but he has made great improvements on this supplement. The supplement combined with continued proper conditioning has helped nearly eliminate all of the potential neurological issue signs we were worried about when I first got him around a year ago.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, my QH lives on a dirt pasture since she is such an easy keeper and is turned out to grass for only a few hours during the day. I read a lot about how this supplement is important especially for horses who don’t have free access to grass or quality grass.

She has dappled out for the first time in the 9 years I’ve owned her and just looks absolutely fantastic. She is always a member of the “clean plate club” so she has no issue with the powder falling to the bottom of the feed pan, she will spend 15 minutes after her bit of grain is gone just licking the bucket to get anything left!.

Since starting my mustang filly on Vitamin B-1, I have noticed a definite difference in her overall relaxation and ability to handle once potentially scary situations in a much calmer and less reactive manner.

I had been feeding raspberry leaf daily with questionable results. Since I started feeding her the Vitamin B-1, there has been no question about its effect. Definitely a much easier-going horse. Although I’m sure maturity and groundwork contribute to her increasingly calm demeanor, I am convinced that feeding daily Vitamin B-1 has been a big part in making her a fantastic partner.

It’s an inexpensive and safe way to help her become the horse I know that she can be.

Our red-head QH gelding is super sensitive to flying insects and has been that way for years regardless of where we have lived. Unfortunately his reaction to many products (including sprays) makes this a challenge.

We have learned to keep him in a fly mask year round and allowing him free access to his stall with a fan works best. He is miserable and sweats terribly in any type of cover. His neck can resemble lumpy oatmeal mid to late Summer.

Our vet has worked with us on many options, but we’ve had little success. Luckily, our horse doesn’t act itchy or out-of-sorts. Over the years, I have talked to people who have had success with garlic as a flying insect deterrent.

After researching options, we decided to start him on SCAH’s garlic prior to this Summer season. I want to compliment Allison (Animal Health Sales Representative) for her help in getting our horse to eat this product consistently.

I have given the garlic a 4 star rating, because I cannot fully review its benefits quite yet. If able, I will report back with our findings.

I recently decide to purchase this product to see if it would help with bug allergy related issues with a sensitive Thoroughbred gelding I have. I did my research about garlic supplements and not all garlic products for horses are created equal.

Some are sourced in China, some use freeze dried garlic etc. I love that Ultra Cruz’s garlic flakes are sourced in the USA and that they are dehydrated, not freeze dried. I feel this really makes a difference in the quality of the nutrients that are absorbed.

I’ve only been feeding this product for 3-4 weeks now, so I can’t say for sure what all has changed in his skin/allergy issues, but I think I’ve seen some small improvements. This product does seem very palatable.

He can be finicky when given new supplements and he gobbled this one day straight away and other horses came to try to lick his bucket when he was done, so at least the ones here all seem to like the smell/flavor of this supplement.

The use of this product is not limited to horses. I use it for goats, llamas and donkeys when the stresses of winter steal their fat stores. A cup of this does more than a pound or more of grain, and so is a money saver as well.

Other manufacturers offer rice bran, but add other ingredients to it which are not great for ruminants, or offer it as a meal. This can cause problems if inhaled, and causes waste in the feeding pans avoided with this superior pelleted product.

Excellent supplement to increase fat in your horse’s diet. This supplement has made a huge different for my horse’s skin and coat. He had such dry skin, previously, that bug bites were horrible. I was unable to find any topical solutions and I stumbled upon a feed through – Max-E-Glo.

I have tried their meal and the pellets. The pelleted version is a little more expensive but not as messy and I am certain he is getting all of the supplement this way. Extremely happy. Both of my boys have gorgeous coats and dappling.

When my senior QH mare started losing her teeth even soaked senior feed and forage products were losing ground keeping her weight up. Wisconsin winters are brutal so I researched sources of extra fat for her diet.

Since I am not a fan of corn oil I was relieved to find Manna Pro’s stabilized rice bran. Both the powered or pelletized version mixes in nicely with her soaked feed and she loves it. I can increase the amount as needed.

Currently she is up to four cups added to each meal. She meets me at the gate with her sweet quiet nicker happily following me to her shed for meals. She is 37, still looking gorgeous, still hanging out and playing with her mini horse sidekick, still has a naughty gleam in her eyes.

She has mellowed to such a sweetie. I am grateful for wonderful soakable feed options that have allowed us these extra golden years together.

This is the first time I have just decided to give a review without being prompted. This stuff is Mind Blowing! My horse has always come out of the winter so full of dander. A nightmare to groom. Dander is impossible to groom out.

I brush and brush and brush and there’s no difference. a horse covered in dander. I have used omega supplements every year but because of Covid I switched to quantity of an unknown product. I can buy this in a 50lb bag and I live in Canada so my brother drives it up for me.

I hate having him shlep all my supplements so I’m keeping simple – one bag instead of multiple buckets. I am going to try to post picture of before and after. The before is the dander and the heart when I vacuumed my horse in the winter of 2020.

The after is a photo I took today, May1, 2021. She has not had a bath since Oct 2020.

I purchased this for a senior mare with arthritis that was limiting her movement. Having used it for a few weeks I am seeing a difference in her activity. She is much more mobile. I will caution that originally I fed with a pelleted feed and she left it behind.

When I went back to the textured feed she preferred it mixed in better. Definitely will purchase again.

Started giving ActiFlex Sr. to my 3 old guys a couple months ago. (All are 30+ years old. ) I’m seeing them move easier and often working up to fast trots and slow lopes now, which I rarely saw before.

Have had these guys since they were 3 and want to make the later days of their lives as comfortable as I can. Great product from a great company that loves horses.

I started using this product as a substitute to CETYL M because of the cost. I researched a lot of products before trying Acti-Flex Senior. I liked how Acti-Flex Senior not only focused on the joints, but on the horse’s digestive system and to help maintain weight.

At first, I continued with the maintenance dosage of CETYL M in the morning, and introduced Acti-Flex Senior (loading dosage) in the evening. My mare was also getting a dosage of Bute-Less in the morning and another dosage in the evening for pain.

After a week, I discontinued giving the Bute-Less in the morning and decreased the Acti-Flex to the maintenance level. After another week, I discontinued the CETYL M. She is now only on the maintenance level of Acti-Flx and one dosage of Bute-Less (has been for about 1-1/2 months).

Her appetite has increased (she is eating all of her grain now) and is also eating all of her hay and still goes out on pasture. She is still weak in the back-end, as a lot of permanent damage has occurred, but she has regained the luster in her eyes and no longer sleeps 3-4 hours at a time.

I highly recommend this product because I firmly believe it has helped her feel better so that she has an appetite and is moving around a lot more–which is so good for her. The cost is so reasonable.

I guess the only thing is, I wish it was in pellet form instead of powder, so that I know she is eating all of it–she doesn’t always lick the pan clean like she did with the CETYL M. Otherwise, I would give it a full 5 star!.

It is doing wonders for my mare! My 10 year old OTTB has arthritis in her fetlock and had progressed to being chronically lame 24/7 and euthanasia was unfortunately being considered. Her vet suggested starting this and Equioxx and now she is a completely different horse! She’s so happy now! She’s been on it for a little over a month and I’ve only seen her stiff once! She is so much more active now! I can’t be sure if it’s this supplement or the combination that she is taking, but I’m still giving it 5 stars and throwing it all of my support! Also, she is a very picky eater and I did have a little bit of trouble getting her to eat her grain with her new supplements.

The Cosequin ASU doesn’t have a strong smell, but it does have a little bit and does tend to settle to the bottom of the grain. I ended up adding just a little bit of brown sugar to her mixture and spritzing it with water and now she loves it!.

I love this product. There are so many joint supplements on the market and it’s hard to know which to choose. I decided to this product. It’s easy to feed and the horses eat every bit unlike some powders which often gets left behind.

I feed it to my three year old and my 20 year old. For the Young Horses it is used as a preventative to keep their choice healthy as they begin 2 train. For my older horse, I can see results and how she moves and her Comfort level.

I have already bought more of this project I will be keeping all my horses on it.

I have been using this on my mare who is in her late 20’s. She tore her muscle in her shoulder years ago and was limping terribly when I got her. I started using this last October and the change was unbelievable.

She gallops around with the other horses, bucks as she’s running with them. Highly highly recommend this product.

Corta Flx is a very well known brand in the equine industry and their products don’t disappoint I recently had an older draft mare go down, but was able to get her back up and I started giving her these Pellets.

While it’s way too soon to see if they are really benefitting her, she has not gone down again and has shown more mobility. She seems to love them and doesn’t notice the difference from her regular feed.

These are larger pellets so they do stand out, but seem appealing.

My horse was very slightly off in a way that had my trainer and me scratching our heads. He wasn’t lame but he wasn’t moving like himself. Then his body worker, whom he LOVES, reported that he warned her off when she tried to work his lower stomach near his hips.

They put their heads together and decided he had ulcers. I gulped when I saw the price of standard ulcer treatments for even just one month and since I wasn’t entirely convinced he did have ulcers (because he hadn’t tried to tell me to stay away when grooming or blanketing) I went to the Smartpak site to see what they had to say.

I found this supplement and figured at this price I had nothing to lose. Within a couple of weeks my trainer was delighted with how he was moving again and his body worker just reported that he was his usual teddy bear self so I guess it did the trick! I will say though that the Smartpak web page says “28 day supply” but the dosage is weight based so if you have a big horse as I do, it will only last you about three weeks.

I was skeptical of this product due to its affordability, seeing as I had tried other more expensive products without luck. After about a week of use, I started to see improvements. My horse who could be irritable under saddle (kicking at stomach, tail swishing, refusing to move forward) hasn’t exhibited these behaviors and is much more willing to move forward under saddle.

He just overall appears more comfortable. This product hasn’t completely cleared up the fecal water issue that this horse occasionally has, but I do believe there’s been some improvement with this since starting the product.

I’ve been giving this to all 3 of my horses for a month now. What a difference!! All 3 have benefited in different ways. My 21 yr old mare acts happy again, and isn’t so touchy. My 15 yr old mare is not salivating like a Saint Bernard anymore, and my 13 yr old mare was diagnosed with ulcers, and is now back to her sweet self.

She is growing a beautiful coat again, and has her focus back. All 3 of them seem happy all the time, not the grumpy, don’t bother me, I was getting from them every now and then. What makes it even better, they will eat it right out of my hand !!!!!.

I had my 15 year old gelding horse on a joint supplement that the vet recommended, then I let it run out cause I wasn’t think it was doing anything. After a month of not having any joint supplement, his sticky stifle returned and I could tell he wasn’t moving the way he should—he was stiffer and seemed less comfortable.

I saw this supplement on sale and thought I’d give it a try. After only 1 week of the “loading dose†my horse’s stifle completely stopped sticking!!! He moves much better, is more willing, and seems much happier and perkier! He is definitely much more comfortable and acts like a younger horse.

I assumed this would help after 2-3 weeks, but I didn’t think it would make such an obvious difference in only 1 week!!! I am extremely impressed with this product and would absolutely recommend it and buy it again.

Just finishing first bottle and there is clear improvement in comfort and ease of movement in an elder horse with arthritis. Have tried several other products with limited success. Also decided to try it on pony with hard summer allergies.

All the other interventions were not supporting him this summer. It’s not miraculous, but he is definitely better. I figured it would support his system and provide a little inflammation control, and it seems that it has.

Have been using this joint supplement for a few years, and getting it from a different supplier. They decided to switch gears on me so I switch supplier for my mares needs. Glad I did. Shipping was slightly higher but not enough for me not to switch.

Happy to find a product that contains chondroitin that is not sourced from overfished sharks. Kudos to this company for using chondroitin sourced from poultry. For marketing purposes, a “shark free” icon would be a positive addition to the label.

Great product for our foster senior warmblood mare after many years of competitions that left her with arthritis in back legs. Vet advised switching from Cosequin to Equinal Combo as more cost effective and better medication for this horse.

This was recommended for my horse by my vet. As I understand it, Red Cell has been around and used successfully for years. HOWEVER, my picky eater refused to touch his feed when just one scoop/serving of Red Cell was added to it! He smelled his feed.

pushed it around, and walked to the back of his stall. I tried again the next day. Tried to sneak in just 1/2 a serving. Nope. My guy wanted nothing to do with it. It must have a detectable iron odor — that my horse found really offensive/unappetizing.

I wound up returning the Red Cell. First time ever returning a supplement.

I own a 38 year old Quarter/Morgan horse. Several years ago he developed Ringbone in his right front foot and he has lost many teeth. Due to his teeth loss, I started him on a mixture that I fondly call, MUSH.

It s a mixture of beet pulp pellets, alfalfa pellets, equine senior, red wheat bran, rice bran pellets, soybean meal, and rolled or cracked corn mixed in a five gallon bucket with 5 gallons of water.

Because of the ringbone and other aging problems, I also supplement him with Easy Willow, Red Cell pellets, Simply Flax, Cool Calories (adds fat without heat) and Majesty’s Flex Wafers. The combination of these supplements with the mush twice a day has really improved my horse s overall appearance and quality of life.

He maintains his weight, looks really good and continues to boss my other younger (20 year old) horse around. Palatability: 5.

I added these to my smartpaks after bloodwork showed my mare being slightly anemic. I kept her on them for about 2 months, and she definitely came back to life, but the longer she was on them, the more hot she became.

She was snorting and huffing at everything and it made it too hard to work with her in schooling sessions. We could go past the same chair 10 times and 10 times, she would snort or try to veer sideways.

Getting her to focus felt impossible and it became too frustrating to keep her on it. I did keep her last shipment and store them off to the side and will use again if needed, but for now, she seems to be doing great.

It only took about a week for the effects to wear off and we recently had a fantastic schooling session where she was actually listening and not distracted or nervous. Like I said, the product works great for restoring red blood cell levels, and I would’ve given it 5 stars if not for the side effect of creating a spooky horse.

The only reason this feed got 2 stars is because the quality has gone DOWN. I’ve used these feed for 4 years and never has it looked like this, been as dusty, or looked moldy on the inside. I’m super disappointed and now I have to switch feed, and a different brand.

The pictures show a previous bag of feed bought, and the new picture shows a current bag of feed bought. These bags were bought within one month of each other. The lighter colored feed is “new” and looks moldy and disgusting.

The darker feed smelled better, looked better, had better quality. Why did the quality change within a month of production? Are y’all pushing out old feed and marking it as made “new”?.

Our quarter horse is closer to 30 than 20, but you would never know. His teeth are mostly gone but he stays plump and happy on 5 lbs of this feed a day and 5 lb of soaked alfalfa pellets. This feed becomes a mash very quickly when wet.

Makes it soooo easy and safe to feed. Literally soak it down by the feed room and by the time you walk to the stall, it’s ready. Love the shine this feed adds too. Horses love it.
