Best Fantasy Books For Kids (2024 Updated)

I bought this book for my kids because my dad had bought it for me when I was in grade school. It is still as fun an awesome as I remember. I love the riddles and that the list of things to find isn’t too easy so it takes the kids a while and makes them really pay attention and look.

Excellent series. Still a classic!.

This boxed set was in perfect shape and fully complete. My wife had read the books herself as a teenager and then again to our children when they were little. But she wanted to read them again since we recently went to a movie of C.

S. Lewis “The Most Reluctant Convert”. With each reading you get more and more layers of entertaining deep thinking.

This is a very nice book set. I bought this for my son when he was small and would read himself chapter every night at bedtime. My daughter was so interested in the series that I did the same for her.

I bought this set for my grandson and I’m hoping he’ll enjoy it as much as my kids did. I attribute this series with making my kids like fe-long readers!.

This is a great read aloud for the whole family. The young people can fantasize about adventures in another world while the more mature reader reaps a higher meaning of life itself. Stepping through the wardrobe puts you into another world; a world of good vs.

evil. It’s well written (Of course, it’s C S Lewis!) and it’s a classic; not at all stuffy.

I “read together” with my young grandnieces and goddaughter over the phone. Choosing an appropriate book is always a dilemma. This is a YA novel with a challenging vocabulary, great storyline and interesting method of weaving everyone’s perspective into what is going on.

It may be more appropriate with your better readers, but I enjoyed it immensely.

I recently lost my copy of this book and was looking for this particular edition since my collection is all a matching set. This was one of the few listings I could find for this edition that wasnt extremely overpriced, and it was in great condition too! Arrived exactly when it was expected to as well.

This book was a well put together story,but it makes you want to buy the other books. I had a difficult time putting the book down. I would definately recommend the series – but read them in order. **Note from Mom – I can’t believe how well written the series of books are.

I bought this book because it was going to be a present for my friend’s little brother since he wanted to read it. The book was in perfect condition except for a tiny mark on the spine of the book. It was really noticeable unless you’re actually looking for it.

It’s a classic book that stands the test of time. A non-brainer in that you don’t have to worry if there are any unsavory details that you don’t want your kid to read in it. This particular version is light weight and a very fast read.

It’s a small paperback. Lovely artwork on the cover. Good summer good for your kids. You can’t go wrong with this legendary author – always delivers the magic of a fantasy world. Nice to see good overcome evil, too.

I read this when i was in jr high. My kids grew up reading it and listening to it on cd. Great for long road trips. The new movies are wonderful but there is something specail about going to Narnia as you read.

Great size and detailed illustrations. Peter pan has a dark side coupled with fun and escapism. Great sense of adventure and good prevails over evil.

This book is very old and unattractive. There are very few pictures which is what my grandchildren love. There is a slight smell to it as if it were stored in an area that had been wet. This was definitely not what I expected.

Howl’s Moving Castle is an enchanting story, rather like fairy tale. Howl’s Moving Castle is about, Sophie a plucky young women, who is discontented with her boring life, working in a hat shop, until, she is cursed by the Witch of the Waste.

Sophie goes on a journey to break the spell, she is under. On Sophie’s journey she meets Howl. Howl’s the powerful wizard that can break Sophie’s curse. But its hard to break a curse that was put on you by the ancient powerful Witch of the Waste and to top it off you can’t tell anyone about, because the curse prevents you.

Howl’s an sly, selfish, cowardly, and as vane as a peacock and you can’t pin him down to anything. But with a plucky women like Sophie Howl had no chance, he had help her. In the end Sophie does not need to be saved by Howl because she saves him.

This story of full of fairly tale like elements and interesting things like: magic, fire demons, moving castles, magic portals, missing princes, princess, curses, magical falling stars, magical disguises, heart less wizards, hopping scarecrows, seven league boots, and cloaks of invisibility.

It is a excellent read and I would recommend this book to people who love fairy tale or fantasy stories.

The first time I ever heard of this book was in 2006 when we lived in St. Louis MO a friend of our younger son with whom he played homeschool baseball gave a report in in a local homeschool newsletter.

A few years later after we had moved from St. Louis to Salem IL we picked Howl’s Moving Castle made from the book in 2004 by Hayao Miyazaki for a family video. The film generally follows the book but as Jackson noted there are some major differences.

I read several reviews by people who actually liked the movie better than the book. The main complaints about the novel are that it is has poor character development flimsy story lines implausible plot devices and too many words yet not enough real description.

Personally I found the book well-written and generaly easy to read with a fair amount of excitement but I did note a few concerns. First the plot has an almost ‘absurdist’ quality to it. That doesn’t necessarily make it bad but some people may not care for that sort of story.

There are some common euphemisms such as ‘drat’ and ‘confound it ‘ a few curse-like terms (‘damnation’ and ‘Hell’s teeth’) and one instance of the word ‘Lord’ used as an exclamation. Howl has as reputation as a womanizer courting girls until they fall in love with him then dropping them for someone else but nothing sexual is actually implied.

References to drinking beer brandy and wine occur and Howl comes home drunk once towards the end. If you prefer not to have your children reading books which contain magic or witchcraft you would obviously want to avoid this one.

I do make a distinction between books which I believe promote an interest in the occult such as Harry Potter and those where the magic or witchcraft is simply part of the fictional setting of a story.

Heading off to Camp Half-Blood together, Percy brings his friend Tyson, who turns out the be a baby Cyclops. Upon arriving at Camp, Percy discovers that Thalia’s tree has been poisoned and is slowly dying, resulting in the borders around Camp weakening.

We have been reading the Rick Riordan series for over 2 years now. They are so engaging – it is beyond belief. We have a nightly ritual of reading it aloud with our grandson every night. We’ve read the Percy Jackson character books, the Jason Grace character books and the Magnus Chase as well.

Each personality jumps out of the pages. Their friends are real. Their adventures are unbelievable and the information you pick up along the way, all based on fact, are immeasurably important.

The teacher read the first book to the remote learning class and my grandkids loved it! I bought this for my 10 year old girl for Christmas and she read it in 2 days. My 9 year old grandson started reading it now.

My son who is 16 who normally plays PS4 8 hours a day since he is in year 11 and has no school reads these books with great enthusiasm. Therefore I’d highly recommend for any parent who is trying to keep your child entertain not just with the electric devices.

I discovered this series through the Warriors series which Tui also has a hand in writing. This book is a must for lovers of Starflight. It gives an insight into his personality, feelings and his struggles to be the dragon he wants to be.

We watch him struggle with the truth that his tribe are deceitful and mean and not the peaceful, magnificent tribe of legend told in the scrolls! We also learn of his true feelings for Sunny as well as some juicy details.

Including a terrible truth about the prophecy from Morrowseer himself and we finally get to meet the mysterious Nightwing Queen, who harbors a dark secret herself. All in all a great read for fans of the warriors Series or fan of dragons.

It’d be good for young readers but also for older readers as well. I’m an adult and I love this series!.

This is such a great series. My kids really get into the dragon adventures and so do I. Stories keep you on your toes and guessing at what is going to happen next.

Part of a continuing saga, and it’s great!

One of the best children’s books written. Not only does it look at the history of Halloween but also helps children make sense of life and death. The ending is beautiful and poetic. The whole book, wonderfully illustrated, is a tribute to holidays, childhood and love for friends.

Beautiful edition of Ray Bradburys classic on friendship, youth, nostalgia, and history. Halloween throughout the ages and its meaning to different cultures. Joseph Mugnainis delightful art adds just the right amounts of creeps, mystery, and fun.

This book is like an old friend which I first read to students where I some years ago. I recently purchased this for my 3 year old granddaughter. While the text is too complex for her at this stage, the beauty and detail in Tomie de Paola’s illustrations allow the story to be told rather than read.

There is as much beauty in the language used in the text as there is in the illustrations. The story engages children of any age and provides a delightful look at a folk tale from another culture. Well worth the purchase.

I was first introduced to this tale as a child; It was a favourite then and it is a favourite now. I’m now a mum and was so excited to know this book was still in print. I’m of Italian background so I thought this was a fun way to share a touch of heritage with my little one.

Another BRILLIANT series from Cressida Cowell, author of the amazing “How To Train Your Dragon” series. Surely it can’t happen TWICE?! I’m a twenty-something-year-old reader and I am NOT ashamed to proclaim that I love Cowell’s work.

Written in the same flavour and style as HTTYD, “The Wizards of Once” is full of adventure, full of moments when your eyes can’t keep up with the sheer power and pace of the storytelling, full of mystical twists and turns, and full of heart and wisdom.

It follows the adventures of Xar, the over-confident boy born to the Wizard tribe. but wielding no magic; and also the story of Wish, the quiet girl born to the Warrior tribe. but with a magical secret.

Their tribes are at war, but in one night these two anti-heroes realise something far more sinister. the return of witches. As usual, Cowell’s word-building is outstanding. It’s a children’s novel, but it’s written with flair and gusto, with mystery and wisdom.

She captures the peril and melancholy, the thrill and adventure, the sharp wind and deadly woods in each and every scene. And of course, the book is left on an excellent cliff hanger. The story is resolved.

but is it? Because surely. it can’t happen TWICE? The only reason I am giving it 4/5 stars is because I still cling to “How To Train Your Dragon”. The storyworld in “Wizards”, whilst vivid and magical, isn’t quite as loveable and quirky as the famed isle of Berk.

Nevertheless, I’m preordering every title that follows.

Bought this to read to grandsons, 10 & 7 yo. They love it. Story is scary but didn’t phase them, also funny – and plenty of detailed illustrations, maps etc for them to pore over and go back to. Highly recommend.

Bought these books for my granddaughter for Christmas, she really likes the series so I answered yes because she asked for them.

This is another great book from Tui Sutherland. Her attention to detail in the lives of the dragons is amazing. The book sucks you into the story from the first page and you just simply want to keep reading to find out what happens to the characters.

Son said back story wasn’t really needed but over all enjoyable. Mom note i enjoyed the back story so its really a person to person note

My son is not am avid reader. As a matter of fact, he hates to read. His school grades have suffered because of that reading hatred. But he started reading these books, simply because he had to, and now he doesn’t want to put them down.

There is something so wonderful about checking in on your child and finding them engrossed in a book. He loves them so much that he reads through one book in 2 days or less, and tells me all about them.

This author has caught my son’s attention, and has given him a love of books. I will always be thankful for that.
