Best Fall Flies For Trout (2024 Updated)

I spoke with Gabe at Stillwater about a TFO Mangrove Coast 9wt, as I was looking for an easier casting 9 wt as compared to a couple of stiff-as-a-board 9wts that I currently use. I mentioned that I wanted a rod that I could feel load on the backcast, and be an easier casting rod overall.

We discussed the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam vs a competitor’s standard saltwater WF9F line that I currently use on an Echo Boost Blue, and he suggested that I try the SA line. A few days after I received the rod I received the line.

After a short lawn casting session with the standard line, I changed reels to the SA Grand Slam. Immediately you could feel a difference in line speed. I was casting 40-60 ft without any effort, and could single haul in excess of 78′ (the limit of my lawn).

Accuracy was very good at all distances, plus it was much less effort to cast (translated as more fun). Then I put the SA line on my Echo Boost Blue. To keep the line speed up on the standard line on the BB I had to give a “punch” at the end of my false cast.

Once I loaded the SA, no such punch was needed. While the standard line was accurate as far as hitting my targets, the SA was just as accurate, and easier to cast longer. The most noticeable improvement was shooting line with a single haul, which again exceeded the length of my lawn.

While the change to the SA wasn’t as dramatic on the Boost Blue as the Mangrove Coast, it was still a significant improvement. I realize that lawn casting leaves something to be desired in comparison to on the water.

I plan to be redfishing over the next few weeks, and will update the review. In the meantime, I’ll be ordering SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam for the Echo Boost Blue as well.

Son and I both have Amplitude Infinity. Great line. Handles beautifully and we never feel like the line is letting us down at all. Handles a bit of power for distance and people often comment on what a nice line it is to use.

Top notch and definitely fishes better than I do! Definitely trust anything SA & Tom’s. Another great tip from Chris.

This review is just until I get an update/message from the seller. I got my order today, but it only included the first box of the two box set. Not much of a value of you only get half the flies you were expecting.

I’ll update this review after I’ve been contacted. *UPDATE*–I contacted Amazon and Ventures after only getting half the order–as Ventures doesn’t do the shipping themselves, it definitely wasn’t their fault, and Amazon quickly sent out a complete order after I talked to their Skynet AI chatbot.

I’m very happy with the quality and assortment of flies–it’s approximately half dry and half nymphs, with a little bit of streamers and terrestrials thrown in. I’m a beginner fly fisherman, and it certainly gives you a lot of usable flies fast.

A great, cheaper way to bolster your collection, and they’re made in the USA! Also, the personal attention and concern from Ventures was much appreciated. I’m trying to get my dad and brother into it, so I’ll definitely be buying more sets of these in the future! For the price, quality, and service, these can’t be beat.

Last spring, I decided to try out fly fishing. I started to like it so I ordered this product, so I’d have many types of flies to try out as I wasn’t sure what flies I needed. With this assortment, I’ve caught many panfish and bass in southeast Texas and some trout in the up in the Rockies.

The quality of the flies is surprising, however, they do break down after a few good fighting fish get hooked on them, though I believe this is the case with most flies anyway. In conclusion, these are great flies for the price and excellent for getting into fly fishing.

Do the math. 122 flies for $84 is $. 68 a piece. THAT’S CHEAP! Being a fly fishermen for over 50 years I was quite skeptical. Been down this road before and was NOT happy. So far, Ventures has gained an extremely satisfied customer! The quality of the Ventures flies are very good.

At least the patterns. I will come back and update after I fish them some? See how they stand up and if the materials are good? THANKS VENTURES!.

Lake turtles love it and bite before any fish. That’s a huge problem, because it’s too hard to unhook a turtle that swallow the hook. Carp fish will bite faster if you use bread or canned sweet corn.

I’m a huge Berkley fan, not so much of the pre- rolled baits but I love these doughs. White is a new color experiment for me , so I’m excited to give it a try.

An excellent affordable fly rod. Fishing distances with perfect control: up to 45 feet (with 12 leader max , tippet included); beyond, accuracy fluctuates. Works a treat with dry flies and wet flies.

Not a streamer rod. Medium action. True to its indicated line weight. Do not use a half size heavier line. A light #5 line with a progressive taper works best. A #4 line works just fine too. I would say the rod is a #4.

5. Do not force the rod, adapt to its tempo. You wont get ultra fast line speed nor extremely tight loops, so avoid windy situations or shorten the leader. Light tippet friendly. Cosmetics are excellent.

Shapes of guides and alignement are impeccable for a rod assembled in China. Fairly light weight and good balance. One con: the tube with integrated sheath. I wish they had used a classic cloth sleeve which, to my mind, protects the rod way better than those compartimented tubes where the pieces rattle somewhat loosely.

But it would increase the price a little. So, an excellent rod for dry fly, wet fly, and greased leader light nymph fishing.

I have two of these rods, a 7 1/2 foot 3 weight and a 9 foot five weight. The 3 weight is my favorite rod for fishing small, brushy creeks. It is true to line weight and casts very accurately at close distances, even with little or no fly line out the rod tip, yet has enough power to buck the wind a bit and to cast across bigger pools or runs with ease.

It balances great with a light click pawl reel. I really love this rod and find it a blast to fish with and aesthetically pleasing too. I’m not so thrilled with the nine foot five weight. This rod is easy to cast, mainly because it is really a lighter, softer four weight rod (I did a “deflection” test on it) and will cast an average four weight line just fine.

The flip side of this is that an average sized trout can put a decent bend in the rod and feel a little big sometimes! Although it has worked well for me in fishing dry flies and lighter nymphs rigs, it lacks the backbone to effectively fish heavier indicator rigs and I find it harder to cast in the wind when compared to my other rods.

For me, this rod is just rather tip heavy unless you hang a reel with an unloaded weight of about six ounces off the back end. Also, the cork on this rod is a poorer grade than the cork on my three weight and has developed some voids with minimal use.

I probably won’t fish the five weight much any more, but I heartily recommend the shorter rods, especially in three and four weight.

I’ve been to Alaska fishing several times and I can say without any reservation that the #5 Mepps Aglia with the silver blade and two tone red/yellow body is THE BEST salmon catcher in my tackle box.

Last trip to Alaska I caught every one of my fish on that lure. I rarely see it in anyone’s top 10 when talking about salmon spinners but it should be. That big #5 french blade just chops the water hard and drive salmon crazy! If you’re planning a trip for salmon this summer or fall put 10 of these in your box and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

I’ve been using Mepp’s spinners for decades as the lure of choice fishing for trout in the many canyon rivers in northern Utah, and they are still the best I have found. Construction quality is always precision and dependable with Mepp’s, though I find I the rocky bottoms and heavy vegetation in and around the shallower Utah canyon rivers are quite rough on them and challenge their life span.

Warped spoons and stripped color flutes from the hooks are usually the first casualty that ends the life of the lures that survive the snags, so I usually only get about 3-4 useful outings from each.

I really punish them, so I think that’s reasonable for such a precision device (though I would like to see them hold up a bit longer). Overall, an effective and highly recommended lure based on decades of experience!.

I have three reels loaded with Cortland 444. I enjoy how well they cast. They are very supple and limp. I prefer that to stiff lines as I fish medium to small waters. The only complaint I have is the tip will often sink a slight bit.

Just under the surface. I am very fond of the peach color. I think these mud priced lines are good values. I dont understand why Cortland fly lines dont get more recognition. My guess is the other line companies are more aggressive lining up YouTube content generators.

I recommend this line for general trout fishing. One last comment. I’ve lost one welded loop because of rough treatment from a tree snag. This line may be a bit less durable that harder lines but right now I am not certain check it out.

I bought this line in a 6 weight to use with a 7 1/2 foot fiberglass rod that has a fairly slow action (E-Glass) rated as a 5/6. I originally tried a modern 5 weight floating line that is 1/2 size heavier (SA GPX) on the rod because it was all that I had.

While the 5 weight line worked ok, it seemed like the rod was struggling with it a bit – overpowering it somehow. The Cortland line’s true-to-size line weight and the more traditional taper has brought my fly rod to life.

The line casts wonderfully – very smooth. I’ve fished trout flies and small streamers and it handles them well. If it is windy (12 MPH or more, basically), the streamers don’t toss quite as well even with a double-haul.

I mostly fish for bream and small bass and the line is just great for this purpose. The line is a nice color, very supple, floats very well, and lays down nice and delicate. I’m very pleased.

Can’t fault Cortland fly lines ,excellent quality and last well. good value for the money. Not called the “classic” for nothing one of the best floaters on the market, precise , smooth and accurate. stays high in the water.

Recently purchased Scientific Angler Mastery MPX Stealth WF 8wt F 225grs (1st 30’) fly line to go with my newly acquired 2022 Scott Flex 8wt 9ft 4pc fly rod. Scott recommended the MPX. The MPX performed as advertised and per Scott’s advise.

Casts were smooth, tangle free, and went where pointed. The Scott Flex loaded the Line well and shot the Line very well. The line colors Amber and Willow are subdued, non-reflecting and eye appealing.

Price for the Mastery MPX is in the right price range for me. The majority of my Fly Lines are Scientific Angler, no problems with them, so I stick with S. A. Made In America too! Rest assured that purchasing from MRFC is trouble free, easy, and customer oriented, even sent along a neat MRFC post-pad!.

The WF-8-H fly line has all the quality attributes expected with Scientific Anglers products. The material is lightweight with minimal friction as it effortlessly runs through the rod rings. Casting and presentation is a pleasure, resulting in placement with negative line-memory.

I used it in wind and it performed well, better than lines of other brands. The hover feature is perfect it does exactly what it says on the box, perfect for the catch 1 metre below a choppy surface on a blustery day.

I caught the first day I used this line, very impressed, the take and retrieve was positive without line-stretch. I highly recommend Scientific Anglers product, it is absolute value and quality for the price you pay, and wont let you down.

As youve observed, Im a fan of Scientific Anglers products, but once you buy it you instantly experience the difference and performance.

This is the smoothest casting line that I have ever bought. I was able to make some of the longest longest,most accurate casts of my life. I was fishing for trout on a river in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The water was low,cold,and clear. At first I worried that the line would be too heavy, and that it would spook the trout that were clearly visible in the cold, clear water. I needn’t have worried, Yes, the trout swam away from the line to avoid it, but they then turned to attack the wet fly that was trailing behind ! All in all, I caught, and released ,7 nice rainbow trout in the space of less than an hour.

It was an awesome day, and I can’t be more pleased with this line. Another fine product from the people at Scientific Anglers !.

I get a lot of fish on the Pearl White 2 inch. Caught largemouth and white bass. Recently I got into some white bass and about the 8th one broke the back treble hook off. Since it was my last one I switched lures and didn’t have anymore luck.

So I ordered 3 more so I have some backups. I also have caught walleye and drum on it. Not so interested in the drum. lol. I have fished on a rod with up to 15 lb flourocarbon line on a 6′ 10″ rod. Works better on lighter line.

I get an excellent hookup ratio with this lure.

I bought these because my local stores were out of my go to lure. These looked similar to the other brand and were slightly cheaper. They out performed my favorite lure. I took them to a new lake far from home to fish for several species of fish I have never fished for.

I tied one on and that was the ticket. We caught three bass species and walleye on them. I shared one with another fisherman. These lures are hot!.

We tried casting for bass in a small urban lake that I had never tried before and had no luck all morning. We finally decided to try trolling and I put on a Flicker Shad. First caught a 1# wiper. Fun little fish.

Next caught a 5# walleye. Awesome! Then landed a 42″, 17 1/2# musky! Amazed! Flicker Shads catch everything, everywhere!.

This is a good lure for trout especially at dusk. Bouyant really needs to make a 3/8 ounce version, or if they do, then Cabelas and Bass Pro need to carry it. Also this lure has markings for brown trout, but the paint comes off way to easily.

Bouyant needs to do some product improvement so that that painted markings don’t come off.

First time I threw the Rainbow trout colorway, it was in a fishes mouth the second it hit the water. The flutter action is ridiculous, it’s very very shiny and attention grabbing, and most of all, it casts like a dream.

Highly recommend.

I have been fishing with the Thomas Lures for several years. Mostly the Thomas Buoyant. I have caught several species of trout and other game fish. While fishing in Canada, the Thomas Buoyant have has been very productive on the Northern Pike! My fishing buddies and I have nick names.

such as the “money lure”, depending on what is hitting that day. I have one full tackle box that has nothing but the Thomas Lures in it. They are fantastic!!.

This Powerbait is so good that it might should be outlawed. I’m a firm believer in “catch and release,” so I catch trout with this bait, clean them, and then release them (after sprinkling them with salt, pepper, and corn meal) into 350 degree peanut oil.

These are mostly “stocked” trout, meaning that the majority of American fisherpersons pay for their (the trout) via fishing license/trout stamp fees. I ran into a flyfisherperson a few months ago at a nearby restaurant (he was wearing hip waders) and asked him how many trout he had caught that morning.

He got all upset and nastily replied that he was a strictly “catch and release” type. I replied, “I didn’t ask how many trout you kept, I just wanted to know how many you caught and released. ” This bait is really good stuff.

I promise you!.

Never review products, but this was wayyyyy too good to not give 5/5. Have caught salmon, steelhead, trout, bass, and panfish on these. If you’re fishing in a hole for 10 minutes and not getting anything, there’s probably nothing here.

If you can dead drift them properly (let them drift in the current naturally), you’re going to get a ton of fish if they’re there. I just wacky rig them and don’t use a bobber with one split shot about a foot up from the hook.

Might just be my personal experience, but found that the rainbow trout were more aggressive for the bait than brown trout, can catch 4″ rainbows with them but not that size browns. Doesn’t matter what size fish they are, again, caught a 5 lb coho with one and lost a 4 pound steelhead.

Sooooo good so if you’re not catching anything with them, you might not be using them properly or there’s no fish there. If going for trout. sometimes you have to drift them right to the edge of the log even though there’s a risk you could lose your rig, but it’s worth it.

They’ll dart out, take it, and dart back under. Definitely worth the price.

My friends near me on the same stream fished a different artificial worm and were crushing the trout. I couldn’t catch a cold. I know it’s not always the bait – there are lots of factors like where on the stream you’re fishing, weight, pool depth, conditions, etc.

but for me, they didn’t work like I hoped.

I have used this fly floatant for a while and it works pretty well. The one problem is that the containers will leak very easily. I will put mine in a pocket of my vest or pack and it makes the whole pocket very oily and crummy, and impossible to clean.

I would recommend putting this stuff in its own sealed container where it can’t get onto anything else.

Always great product from Loon. This is a great floatant used on all dry flies and hoppers. I use this with fishpond floatant holder. They both fit perfectly

It just works. I use it on large deer hair flies and really small dries for the trouts. There are some specialized products out there that fill a niche, but this covers 90’s of what you need.

I read other reviewers saying the memory was bad and tangled in the guides when they cast. I thought no way its that bad. I can deal with that. And I did. I had no problem casting, however, all my troubles happened when the line hit the water.

The memory in the line made the line recoil (not like a spring from “twisting” in the line. more like a snake going from straight into a series of S’s) It was extreamily noticible on flat water. It would cast out straight then the line would start recoiling back into S’s dragging the fly behind it.

This was from brand new out of the box. I can’t imagine what it would be like after being stored on the reel for some time. I then tried running the entire line through my fingers with a little tension.

It helped. It was much better!. for about 15mins. Then it was back to being a spring. There are so many problems this creates with trying to present a fly properly. And good luck hooking any fish with 20ft of slack line between you and the fly.

So for the people that couldn’t even cast this line, good, you would have been wasting your time anyways.

I bought this to use for stocked pond trout, each color works in different conditions; primarily gold/copper tones when it’s cloudy and silver tones when it’s sunny. These are the first spinners I throw when I show up, and I rarely have to switch out for something different.

The fish always bite.

I discovered Panther Martins a few years back and swear by them now. The blade design is ideal for all speeds of retrieving, this blade will even turn as the lure drops. Color patterns all good though my most productive are yellow on black and red on yellow.

Wwter clarity and cloud cover will have big affect on selection. Trout, bass, pike the list goes on, I’ve caught them all with these.

I once pinched down the barbs on a 1/4 oz. gold spoon, black body, yellow spots PM, fishing in the Sierra Nevadas. Conditions were perfect, so I wanted to see how many trout I could catch in about a 1 1/2 mile stretch of stream.

The fish just hammered it. About 5 hours later I had caught 143 trout. mostly native. rainbows, Browns and some Brooke’s. It’s the only lure I use when trout fishing. 1/8 oz. when the water gets low.

My go to for smallmouth bass for many years. It always spins unlike so many other brands. Hands down the best spinner on the market. Great product!

This spinner will flat out catch any game fish that eats other fish. I prefer the silver/orange in bright conditions and the gold/orange for them darker days. I prefer the 1/32 oz. on 4 lb. line so I can fish it very slow with an occasional twitch at times.

Also try letting the spinner hellicopter down for a foot or two on slack line. I do this by lifting the rod to move the spinner then reeling in the slack line as I lower the rod. You have to be a line watcher for this as most times you won,t feel the strike.

For fishing deeper or with a faster retreive I pinch a small split shot ahead of the spinner for extra weight. This is also good for windy conditions.

The Panther Martin® Fly Spinner is the best true running spinner on the market. Casting is smooth and it runs straight/true ever time. I fish small trout streams in S/E Wisconsin and cast upstream, Panther Martin is the only spinner that will spin correctly on slow retrieves.

Silver with black/orange fly is my favorite for brown and brook trout any time of day/weather.

Good lure. Smooth casting. Comes with single hook as well as the trebles which is good as can only use trebles in lakes around here. A bit pricey so brings a tear when you lose one in the river.

I’m hard pressed to find a freshwater species besides carp that won’t hit this spinner. Walleye, Pike, large mouth, small mouth, gar, even had perch go for it. It’s probably the most versatile lure in my tacklebox.

I bought this lure from the advice of my brother. It was more expensive than the rooster tails but i thought I’d give it a try. I went on a weekend canoe/fishing trip down the elk river with 5 other friends.

We had our canoes on the bank and everyone had a line in fishing from the bank before we shoved off. BOOM!! I get the first fish, then another, then another. I caught three before we even shoved off and the guys were jealous that I had caught 3 before we even left.

YES I think this is a great lure and will definatly it use again.

I fish for winter trout in a public stocked city lake, which has muck and filamentous algae (green slime) on the bottom; this bait floats well on a light hook, very visible no mess or bad smell. I used a split shot on 4# line to keep it floating about a foot off the bottom out of the ‘slime’.

If it doesn’t float add a little more bait or use a lighter Aberdeen hook. I still use crawlers, as they seem to catch slightly bigger fish, but for action you can’t beat this. Stores easily, eliminates the need for marsh mellows, cheese, corn, liver and other stuff that goes bad and stinks.

This bait doesn’t smell as strong as other Berkley products I’ve used, worms, minnows and shrimp. I’ve actually re-used if from fish I’ve cleaned and still caught fish, LOL!.

When it comes to stocked trout, nothing catches more fish than PowerBait. PowerBait is to “synthetic dough bait”, as Google is to “internet search”. All these different variations will catch you fish, the fish does have a preference from day to day.

My go to flavor during the spring in the North East is the corn flavor.
