20 Best Deshedding Tool For Labs (2023 Updated)

I wanted to get something I use to help with my dobermans shedding. My black doberman sheds like crazy and my red doberman sheds a little. I debated between this and the “Furminator” for a few days. I thought that the “Furminator” was just too expensive, in my opinion.

But what if this “Furblaster” doesnt work at all, and then I end up having to buy the Furminator anyway. But then what if the “Furblaster” works great?! I would save money! So I decided to just go with the “Furblaster” and see what happens.

Wanna know what happened? Of course you do! A WHOLE LOT OF DESHEDDED HAIR!! Like an INSANE amount! I kept asking my dogs “how are you not bald yet?!?!” and they were like “We don’t know, and we don’t care! Just don’t stop brushing us because we are LOVING this!” At least I’m 100% positive that’s what they would have said.

ya know. if they could talk. Anyhoo. I am super impressed with this brush. I notice WAY less hair laying around the house, collecting in the corners, decorating my outfit of the day, permanently stuck to the interior seats of my truck like their glued onto the upholstery, floating in my coffee and somehow ending up in my mouth at the most random of times.

(Looking at you black doberman). NOW, I will say, the very first time I used this brush, even though I was floored by the amount of hair coming off of my dogs, it did stir up a massive amount of dander.

HOWER- both of my dogs struggled with flakey/dandruff-y shampoo and I had just bathed them with a new (super, phenomenally awesome) shampoo (from 4-Legger, totes recommend, not sponsored). So the fact that they both looked like I had just sprinkled table salt on them, wasn’t their best look.

But the more I used the brush, the better and better there coats got! It may gave been a double play between the brush and shampoo, but who knows. Either way, my dobermans are looking MAJESTIC AF, and I have way less dog hair around my house and in my truck.

The brush itself is super sturdy, good quality, doesnt feel cheap or like it’s going to fall apart. I love that the comb part comes off for easy cleaning as well. And even though the main structure of the brush is plastic, I definitely expect it to last a VERY long time as long as one of the dogs stops thinking it’s the worlds greatest toy and trying to run away with it in his mouth.

This is a decent tool for brushing my American Bulldog. He has straight, short hair that is almost like quills. He sheds a decent amount and when he itches or shakes it is noticeable especially in the spring time when losing that winter coat.

This tool helps get rid of that loose hair.

i wasn’t sure it was working at first, it seemed so light but after a little while of my cat arching her back and shaking her tail (she’s picked up some doggy traits, tail wagging is joy for her) while I brushed her, there was a good amount of shedding collected.

it’s easy on my hand and so slick it doesn’t pull any hair. it went smoothly with the grain, no need to really work at it, an angle helps but it’s quick to figure out. i think we’re both happy with it and i noticed compared to similar tools on here it’s alot less expensive.

on top of that there’s a card with an easy warranty, a free training ebook talking about behaviours as well, and even a discount on your next purchase. i’m glad i picked this one and i feel like the company is great too.

totally worth it.

I bought this for our cats — we have five, and there is a lot of hair. When I unboxed it, I took a look at it; it sure doesn’t look like it would work. The teeth are widely spaced and it doesn’t look like it would do anything.

I was skeptical. We had been using a slicker brush exclusively, and frequently, and I was surprised that this brush still gets the fuzzy undercoat that would otherwise end up on our furniture and clothing.

Fewer hairball surprises, too! Ran it down our own arms, and is so much gentler than the slicker brush — no scratching — and even our brush-averse kitties will sit still for several strokes with this one without being held.

Highly recommended.

I never had trouble brushing our long haired retriever/collie mixes. But Barney, our new guy of unknown DNA, hated to get brushed or combed and his combination smooth hair and rough short-haired coat was really shedding on everything.

He loves to be patted and hugged but would hide from all brushes and combs. BUT – He absolutely loves this tool and it really works. We are both very happy.

We have two labs and this brush is the best! Both of them don’t mind being brushed so must be comfortable for them. No pulling of hair. The amount of hair this brush removes is mind blowing! Previously used a different popular brush which only seemed to get loose top coat.

This brush gets the dense undercoat! Every dog owner should have one of these brushes!.

Furminators are a must for me now. At least once every few months we have a proper groom (when my labs start to shed) and this is the tool for the job. I would warn though that due to the size, it’s not easy to get into small places and can be tricky to wield around wrinkles/bumps- so I have a little one I use for tricky bits (and our cat) and I leave the legs and face to a softer brush.

This thing is made for buisness! That means you have to be far more careful than with some tools. It grabs fur really well so it’s important to slowly go from the top to the undercoat, or you may end up pulling your dog’s skin.

Similarly too much pressure can scratch the dog, although our’s have never bled/visibly been hurt- so it may just be uncomfortable when it’s too close to the skin. Being light is very important- you get used to the motion to lift the hair off by raising the wrist at the end of the stroke too.

I have had three Furminator tools like this over the years and two of them have lost a tooth each- I haven’t a clue when but it’s something to be aware of. They’re great quality and the grips/button are similar to a really nice bike’s handles.

I can’t recommend them enough. Just go easy with how often they’re used- our black lab looked like the night’s sky for a while with the amount of dead skin I was brushing to the top of his coat every day.

This is your once a week/fortnight tool- not your daily maintenance.

I have a 60 pound white boxer with short fur that sticks to and in everything. It really pours off of him like a waterfall anytime someone goes in for pets. I’m honestly surprised he’s not bald with the rate he loses fur.

I’ll admit that I rarely brush him to begin with, so I am convinced that any sort of regular brushing would have been effective in managing his fur waterfall. But, I do believe the Furminator does a great job in getting the undercoat, especially at this time of year (late spring/early summer).

The Furminator has changed by brushing habits for two reasons- 1. My dog seems to love it, and I can tell the daily brushings are effective. We collect less fur each day. 2. The guilt I have over spending $35 on a comb forces me to use it, thus establishing effective grooming habits.

It has been the only tool that has caused me to stick to a routine. Solid brush, very well built, effective for short haired dogs, the click-to-cleanout feature is great. Four stars ONLY because it does a fantastic job of loosening fur, but doesn’t always remove it from my dog.

I make him do zoomies around the yard to get the free floaters off.

I had heard so many brilliant things about the Furminator many years ago, my two J Russell terriers have been casting terrible so i thought id invest in one. The dogs and I are so happy I did-its brilliant! I couldnt believe how much was coming out, I did as recommended to start with, you could keep going and going but I choose to observe and respect my dogs when you see they have had enough.

The hair will just keep on coming, I kept thinking had I not groomed to get that hair out it would be all over the house. I have to say its nearly been 4 weeks of grooming and their coats are gleaming, every visitor that comes to see me comments on how shiny and amazing my black dog looks.

My OAP (15!) dog has less healthy glossy looking coat, his coat was dull and oily after wearing a jumper theough winter to keep him warm so I was delighted that I have managed to get even his coat looking great after a furminator groom and some elbow grease! I highly highly recommend, 10/10.

A previously owned stray neutered cat was running around our neighborhood for about 4 months. He was afraid of people but we put food out for him and started to feed him in our garage to get him out of the weather.

One day he finally decided to adopt us and become very friendly. He is a medium length haired cat who had hair mats from his shoulders down. You could not pet him except where the mats were not. I saw the Furminator on chewy along with other hair brushes.

I looked up all kinds brushes and combs on the internet and read reviews. I watched videos on how to use them etc. The furninator seemed to be the only one that would cut the mats out safely. I purchased it through Chewy as they had the best price.

I followed the directions of doing a little at a time and in three days all the mats were out. Now I can comb through his fur with no problems. When I go to the vets and I am going to show the Furminator to him as I want to spread the word that there is an easy way to keep your animal’s fur in good condition especially if the fur tends to mat.

I have a very skittish kitty that has very long hair. I have been trying to find ways to remove her mats for years. I finally found what works for her. I gave her rescue remedy, sprayed her coat with stazco conditioning spray, and this dematting tool.

I was FINALLY able to demat her today. The dematter was easy to use and was very gentle on her. There was a few times in snugged on her fur, so I had to learn to be gentle and take my time. This will help her sooo much in not having as many fur balls!.

This Furmanator tool, like all their products, is amazing! I have a long haired cat with a huge fluffy tail and while he grooms himself very well, this baby takes care of the rest. I can’t recall the cost but it’s about mid range but the quality is great.

It has two length settings, I use the widest one, for general maintenance. It flies through any slight matting and anything else my cat has gotten stuck in his fur. My biggest take away is work quickly but gently and you’ll get the best results.

gentle on my husky ,regular combing prevents a lot of shedding. worked well getting the dog hair off the rug too, very pleased

This is amazing. I used it one time and I’ve already got the results I figured I would get after months of having it. I put my German Shepherd In the floor. spent about 30 min brushing him and got a Kroger size grocery bag of hair off him and its already a drastic change!! I can’t imagine what he is gonna be like and how much the hair in my house is gonna reduce when I do it daily for weeks!! I use to be a groomer washer.

I know how much having their coats blown out can help. so this week im gonna have him groomed so they can power blow all that hair out. then when I keep him brush daily the change is gonna be like day and night!! God bless.

We misplaced our furminator during moving and it’s now spring with a husky. So we went to tractor supply and decided to try it since we didn’t want to spend a ton of money on another furminator. This thing works a thousand times better than our furminator.

Our husky was a completely different dog after just one brushing. I would recommend this brush to anyone with a husky or any shedding dog. We are going to try using it on our mini aussie as well.

I purchased this tool for a large smooth collie who sheds continuously. I have to brush her every day. Was looking for a new implement and read good reviews. I bought the size recommended for her, but it is quite small and does not cover as much area as other tools.

Also, since it includes a blade, the directions note to use it “gently”, so I am afraid I’ll hurt her. Tried it a few times but does not do as good a job as the other tool I have – much smaller area covered with not much fur makes for a longer time she has to tolerate it.

Not a good match.

I used to have this very fat cat with thick coarse hair. Due to her size hair type, it was hard to clean everywhere enough so she would end up having these big clumps of hair that were the size of golf balls on her fur.

Brushing didn’t even make a dent, so i used to cut them down as much as possible but the skin would be so delicate in that area it knew it was hurting her just to touch it, I had to find a new way to help her.

I tried regular brushes hair removing gloves but they either didn’t work at all or they only worked by removing the loose hair already on the surface. For Christmas, years back, my brother gave me the shed magic deshedder.

He actually used it for his dogs who had long hair said it worked well. I tried it out the next day it removed so much bulk of her hair seriously cut down those clumps to manageable pieces where I could then cut them off easily.

It works great but it would be even better for smaller breeds and shorter fuzzy undercoated dogs if the blades were a little closer together. Other than that this has been my best go to for deshedding dogs.

I really like this Shed Magic tool. There are two different ones, one with the little teeth and one with just the rake. I like the one with the little teeth.

My 2 German Shepherds shed a lot. I decided to buy this comb after watching some YouTube professional dog groomers using something similar. I saw this on the chewy app and took a chance. It works great! No complaints! Very comfortable to hold and pulls out a lot of loose hair! Very happy with my purchase.

I’ve got a shepherd/lab mix and I’ve used this several times on her. It’s an ok product; I’d like it to get more of the underneath fur, but it doesn’t. I don’t feel it’s much different than using the hoop or a brush.

It still gets plenty of hair, just not enough for my liking.

I had my doubts at first about this brush since the teeth were so small and close together. My Sheppards have very long thick hair, but this does great. It’s taking some time to get all the loose hair but hoping it finally helps with all the tumbleweeds if hair all around the house.

If you have a hairy pet you gotta get this excellent tool. It gets down to the undercoat of your pet and gently pulls out undercoat and kinks with every stroke. It has two sides to it and each side works wonderfully.

I don’t know how I got along without this tool. It works better than all the other two sided deshedding brushes I’ve ever bought.

Im a dog groomer and have been looking for a new undercoat rake as they’re not all created equal, I’m so impressed by this one it’s crazy how much extra hair I got out after I thought I was finished with all my other tools! Mind blown would definitely recommend to anyone and as a bonus it has the deshedding tool too.

Brilliant tool for removing loose fur. Bought for my dog who malts all the time. Have used several combs previously but they do not compare to what this removes. Works exceptionally well meaning much less fur being deposited on furniture and the floor.

A little on the expensive side but worth it for what it does.

This is the second one we have purchased. These are easy to hold and grip when using. We use ours on a black lab who sheds lots, daily. This is an ideal easy use tool.

Unfortunately, Tractor Supply only has large SleekEZ although tv ads show it is at store on tv commercials. Needed smaller than horse size. Tried this. Doesn’t work as well

I have three outdoor cats, and I wasn’t really concerned about helping them groom until I got my long-haired cat. He has very thick fur, so he gets mats, tangles, and hairballs. I thought I would help him out and got this brush.

I like the wood, eco-friendly handle, but the reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 was the bristles. They are rather sharp and I was nervous about hurting him, so I brushed rather lightly. I know this is to penetrate the undercoat better but I’d rather play it safe.

This didn’t catch as much fur as I thought it would, but it was surprisingly good at catching loose ticks. I pulled THREE off of him in our first brushing session. If they revised this brush to have the penetrating but softer bristles, I would get it.

I ordered this because I liked that the handle was not plastic. Unfortunately the brush has sharp, straight metal bristles. I don’t think our two cats (one long hair and the other one has short hair) will like the feeling.

There may be some cats who will have no issue with the stiffness. There were no good photos so I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve seen some metal bristle brushes slightly bent and softer to the touch.

I gave it two stars because the bamboo handle is nice.

My long hair cat LOVES her new brush. She purrs and purrs while she is being brushed, and we are doing it at least once, if not twice a day. Great at detangling/loosening matted areas and then removing loose/shedding hair to prevent future matting.

Bristles are “pointy” against my skin, so I fully get why others with shorthair cats don’t like it. Would not use on my shorthairs.

I was skeptical about spending this kind of money on what felt like “just a brush” for my lab, but she was starting to shed small clumps of fur everywhere and was still bushy. This brush was used for a few minutes one day (she wouldn’t stand still), and closer to 20 minutes the second day.

What a difference! I liked that the Furminator had what I consider to be a “guard,” helpful for wrongly dogs and inquisitive toddlers who tried to help (the help was denied). I was afraid the edges were going to be too rough on her skin and fur but they definitely weren’t! The brush was used on the obvious itches of fur fluff, and it was so satisfying seeing the clumps of fur come out.

My dog definitely wriggled around a ton using this (totally normal for her to NOT sit still), but eventually quieted down and seemed to enjoy the brushing. Her coat is so much softer and silkier after this brushing, it’s like night and day! So glad I fought my skepticism and purchased this, it’s worth the money and will be used frequently to help keep poor dogs cost in line so she stays cool during the summer heat!.

I used it his product when I worked as a grooming assistant and assisted in removing mattes on clients’ dog(s). This product worked very well to remove mattes without discomfort for the dog—and in turn, discomfort for myself while handling the dog.

I used this product several times a day with ease and know it was at least 6 months old and well used when I began to use it myself, so I can attest that it’s durable and worth trying if you have a pet that has issues with matting easily.

I can’t give it a 5* rating because I don’t know it’s cost and don’t own one personally. I can’t speak on the price point, only it’s durability and functionality.

My girl kitty has had a terrible flea infestation all summer. Her under coat is full of black residue, and her entire body was covered in big mats of crud and hair. This brush, fully extended, quickly clears these mats away.

It doesn’t remove that much fur and what is removed looks like loose fur not big mats. Once I’ve got her belly and rear brushed out it’ll be bath time, an experience I don’t look forward too. I am totally impressed by the performance of this tool.

I really really love this brush! I have a fine, long haired border collie sheltie mix and a coarse, medium-haired border collie sheltie mix and this thing actually works for both of them. When they have fursplosions I do daily rounds of brushing for about 30 minutes until the fursplosion ends, can we go back to our shorter daily brushing.

It also works very well on my fine, dense furred cat who is very impossible to brush otherwise. I highly recommend this!.

My ACD has a really thick undercoat which he blows out once a year. His hair comes out in clumps. This has got to be the best brush so far that we have tried. I thought the metal bristles would maybe hurt him, but he LOVES being brushed and this pulls out those clumps of hair like no other.

Probably what helps is the brush has two flexible sides which move with the shape of the dog when you brush so there are no hard edges and probably why he doesn’t mind being brushed since this prevents poking.

This is much more effective than the flat, hard brushes. Love, love, LOVE this brush!.
