Best Book On Tape For Road Trip (2024 Updated)

I bought this book for my wife for a Christmas present. We were always borrowing the one that her mother has, but many times we would forget to and then be on the road without it. We are in our retirement time and we like to travel and to have this book on hand is a must have.

We always try and take the scenic roads so my wife loves to read it and then we can discover what our great country has to offer. Many interesting facts and alot of history is packed into the book. So I would highly recommend this book to anyone that likes to travel and get off of the interstate system and take some back roads and see what America has to offer.

The US is divided by regions accompanied by maps which show which states are included as well as where the scenic route they recommend is located. Each “road trip” is described by length and includes best time of year to visit.

Mostly natural attractions are included on each route in a logical driving order. The balance of this book is paragraph overviews of each location to visit.

I purchased this book to keep in the RV. When we are traveling we like to say off of the interstate highways and travel the more scenic routes, this book is a great resource for mapping our trip.

I read this book when it was first published many many years ago now, having read a snippet in the Readers Digest at that time. I absolutely loved the book and have read it a few times since, and never tire of doing so.

That to me is a sign of a good read. It’s not a big ‘deep thought’ book by any means, but if that’s what one wants, go read War & Peace, or such!! This will be a quick read for most people, but one that brings a smile to one’s face.

I have also bought it as a gift for a couple of friends over the years. When Helene finally reached the UK and wrote a book on that too (The Duchess of Bloomsbury St) I bought that as well and read it with much delight.

It is good to know that that is now always printed as the second part of the original book, which is great. All in one!! (or at least was. I don’t know if it’s in print still but it can certainly be bought online as a used book.

) I love Helene’s sense of humour (so close to mine!!) and rather left of centre!! It doesn’t matter if one has never read the tomes she is talking about when she orders her books, the story of her correspondence with the book shop and her sense of fun, leaps out of the pages.

at least for anyone with any semblance of humour. My recent purchase of the book once more, is as a gift for another friend, whom I know will enjoy it immensely. Wonderful. Go buy it.

Let me begin by saying 84 Charing Cross Road is one of my favourite books ever published. This is a review of this particular edition of the book and not of the book itself. I have a copy of the Virago Modern Classics but purchased this edition by Stellar Classics for a friend.

I cannot warn you enough that this is a dreadful rendition of a classic work. It is filled with spelling mistakes, punctuation errors and suffers from poor page layout. Furthermore the cover is an inadequate reproduction of the first edition (looks like a cheap computer scan or colour photocopy).

Don’t be fooled by the nostalgia of owning a copy that “looks” like the original but is nothing like the original. For a book that is about the love of literature and the printed page this particular edition is a disgrace.

Both Helene Hanff and Frank Doel would be horrified by this travesty! To use Hanff’s own words “I will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT. “.

Charming book of letters exchanged between a New York writer and a London used book shop over a 20 year period beginning in 1949. Writer cajoles and lambastes the book seller for the books she wants, insisting they be of quality, not with cardboard covers.

She always reads a book first from the public library before deciding to purchase it. She befriends first Frank, her correspondent, and eventually the book shop staff. She sends them packets of foods that are still rationed in the UK after WWII.

Such a fun read, and gives you a slice of life of a NY writer. Helene Hanff wrote scripts for Elery Queen TV series, children’s books, text books, and un-produced plays. Look for the sequel to this, The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, as well.

We read this for my book group, and it got a unanimous thumbs up! Made into a movie in 1987 with Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft. Book published originally in 1970, re-published in 2013. Also available as an audio book.

Don’t miss this one – it’s a great read! And at 97 pages, a quick one that you can pick up at odd moments.

Amazing! A must-have for any road trip or anyone interested in learning more about the US! The info on the National Parks is outstanding, hours of great reading! The spiral binding is great and makes the book very easy to handle and navigate.

Makes a great gift too for teens/middle school aged kids! A+.

An excellent road atlas for interstate traveling. Map details are good, lots of campgrounds and points of interest are noted. Lots of detail for sights to see for each state as well. The ring binder format allows the book to lay flat but.

the holes for the ring binder create a weak point where pages can easily tear. Excellent tool for trip planning.

I had a previous edition of this atlas, about 15 years old. The new on is spiral bound instead of with staples; much better. It adds descriptions of all the national parks, and the state maps now cover two pages each instead of one.

One small catch is that if you are looking for a town, you need to know what state it is in, because the index is organised by states.

Nicely built and heavy book for keeping in your vehicle. This edition is the 4th and latest. All trails listed are for south of I-70. Pages are plastic coated as well. Good info if you like offroading in Colorado.

Excellent guide to explore the rugged roads and trails of Colorado. Great descriptions and ratings to make sure you know what you’re getting into. The spiral-bound format makes it easy to use while on the road.

awesome trail guide for below I-70. There are a few areas missing but covers the popular trails. Helpful information, about what’s along the trail and type vehicles can tackle the trip.

I came across this book by accident whilst search online for books on extended travel experiences which I am embarking on myself. Whilst not intending to do exactly what Rold did, his insights and suggestions put more thoughts in my head.

Dwelling a while in places as you travel so that a fuller, more rich enjoyment of the days travelling was a key message and whilst the sort of ‘earn as you go’ is not for me as I am already retired its a message well received.

The sort of ‘Europe in 14 days’, because I earned the money to pay for it was never for me or Rolf, and so imbibing and aligninging with his approach was a great personal joy as the pages flipped over slowly.

It’s a book I will take with me to read and reread as I travel The Far East, South America and the Pacific Islands in the next three years.

Serves to enhance wanderlust and realise your spiritual potential through long-term travel utilising; real world experience, profound quotes, poems, traveller testimonials and now-mostly outdated references.

A superb book! I cant recommend this enough. So many subjects & angles are covered, its worthwhile on many levels for anyone who would like to simplify their chaotic life & break away from the madness of life.

Honestly Beth can do no wrong!! I love her books and the road trip is no exception. It’s an easy, delightful read that ticks all the boxes for me. I find her books great to slot in between my more serious reads, it helps me keep motivated.

Read this book in 2 days , I couldn’t put it down! Loved the back and forth between the past and present , keeping me on my toes until the very end ! A laugh out loud read at some points !

I love Beth O’Leary’s previous books. That being said, I was surprised to love this one even more. I genuinely didn’t want it to end. That’s my only criticism – it was over too soon.

This book is, of course, a follow-up to the much more amusing and original ‘Notes from a Small Island’. As I obtained a cheap second- hand copy from ebay, in very good condition I have to say, I’m not complaining – although I would not have liked to pay the exorbitant price of a new copy.

Some of the content has already been mentioned in the first ‘Notes’ and this volume is by an author who has been encouraged by his publisher to do more of the same over twenty years’ later. The section on the West Country is particularly sketchy, with hardly a mention of the interesting little town of Totnes, with its cast of eccentrics, may of whom spend their considerable free time in giving each other alternative therapies.

I know, I’ve lived near there! Buy it if you must, but it’s rather disappointing. And there isn’t really a ‘Little Dribbling’, so that rather spoils the point of the title. Perhaps Britain can no longer be a subject of gentle humour but merely a rather sad reminder of what used to be delightful countryside (much of it now threatened with destruction or actually ruined, as Bryson points out) with ever fewer genuine ‘characters’ of whom to relate amusing anecdotes.

Having enjoyed all Bryson’s books so far, I looked forward to the update of “Small Island. ” I recently re read the notes from a small island and found it just as satisfying as the first time. I lived in both the UK and USA, and appreciated his humorous perception of the differences.

However I was disappointed in Little Dribbling. This, somehow, didn’t hit the mark. Comparisons between us and uk peculiarities are quite different to the more gentle comparisons of the same places over a gap in time.

Perhaps it’s because go changes of places with time are inevitable and not as remarkable as differences between places at the same point in time, which are often surprising. Bryson’s humour is still enjoyable but for me, not as funny.

I can’t be,I eve that the reviewers quo Ted in the book actually laughed out loud. I didn’t. This is not a “cant put down” book. In fact, after its stay next to my favourite armchair for over a month, there is still a quarter of it left unread.

But I shall finish it, I promise.

I adored Bill Bryson’s “Notes from a Small Island” when it was released, in fact, based our trip to the UK on some of the chapters (and avoided certain places for the same reason). But going back is always hard, and things change, not always for the best.

Bill obviously loves Great Britain, and treasures certain areas, but there is a tone of “grumpiness” in many of the chapters which is a bit discouraging. He is, however, being honest and it’s his view of the modern GB to which he is entitled.

It seems not every town is “Midsomer” re-created, there is poverty, poor decisions made by councils, and development encroaching on tranquillity. Still, he applauds the parklands, the Lakes, Wales and many other places.

I did feel a little sad for him eating all those meals alone in crummy restaurants, drinking too much and falling asleep fully clothed. Mrs Bryson is probably used to it. Worth the wait, worth the money but read it in context.

Bill Bryson once again sets off to see Britain via his ‘Bryson Line’. His wry humour, incisive insights and informative descriptions of the places he visits makes for a great read. I would love to do some of the walks he does in this book.

I have read the book several times. Bill Bryson is always good fun to read.

This is such a funny book but not only that, it’s packed with fascinating information you never needed to know and will probably soon forget – especially if you’re in the same age-group as the author! I read it at the beach on my summer holiday and often had to laugh out loud.

Thank heavens I didn’t embarrass my children because they are all grown and are fast becoming embarrassments themselves. I have never been to England but recognise most of the names of places Bryson visits.

Of course I am now very keen to visit, besides I’ve read so many facts that even the British don’t know, I could baffle them with my knowledge! Mind you I’ll have to re-read the book and take notes as I go to do that! This book was recommended by a friend and I am happy to recommend it to anyone.

Big colorful book with great routes and great photos. The routes cover all of the country well. The only disadvantage of this book, is that it large and not a pocket travel guide to take with you unless you are not limited by space on road trip.

We have enjoyed traveling in the West, but did not always know the best ways to see the national parks and other landmarks that were near our destination and along our pre-planned route. With this book, we will be able to plan our future trips more easily.

The photography is excellent, the maps are clear, and the capsule descriptions of sites are concise and interesting. Whether we are vacationing out West or not, we will use this book to really “see” where we are heading.

This book will be right with the atlas and maps on each trip. The book also serves as a reminder of where we have already been; we can show others compact maps and superb photos of places we have been, encouraging them to “see the USA” as we have done.

This book is very good for traveling. It covers all scenic drives in the U. S. thoroughly. It is detailed in telling you what sights you will see and what the conditions of each drive will be. I purchased this book because I want to teach my children to be more aware of God’s beautiful creation and to enjoy it by taking in these beautiful drives when we go on vacation.

I am very pleased with this purchase.

We recently purchased a travel trailer and plan to use it this summer. The “Road Atlas” appears to be comprehensive and as such will undoubtedly prove to be a reliable guide for our travels. It is built to be easily used and durable in its construction.

CAMPING WORLD offered the “Adventure Edition” at a competitive price.

I purchased this same road atlas, midway through college when I took a 9 week road trip with friends across the US. This was just before online maps were really usable, and was a fantastic companion for finding campground options on the road, as well as planning out park itineraries and city stops along the way.

Paired with a solid guidebook and information from the locations themselves, we were armed with just enough information to know where we wanted to go and how to get there, without following a pre-defined route.

Now, over a decade later as I plan another cross country adventure with my wife, what a delight it is to have an updated version to help guide us. It is so easy to get lost and buried in the numerous options, lists and ‘best ofs’ available today when looking online that a road atlas becomes almost a neccesity for longer trips.

It may be personal preference but there is something that feels particularly freeing when choosing your ‘A’ and ‘B’ for a day and drawing the route out on a map that tapping ‘GO’ on Google Maps may never be able to replicate.

I bought this on a whim, and forced myself to make use of it – when going on a road trip to visit family, I made a point to not use a GPS and test my map-navigating skills. I was able to get around better than I expected, including locating a camp ground to stop at mid-way through the trip, It was a cool feeling to not mindlessly follow a voice/image on my phone (for reference, I’m currently 27).

Makes you realize that sometimes we need to slow down and see the world for what it really is.

I purchased Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways to give as a gift to my hubby. Hint! Hint! We need a vaca! Can’t wait to plan our first adventure based on the information in this book.

This book is a wealth of information around any sight to see on the road. Great pictures, maps of the drive, how long the drive is, and the best time of the year to go. It even has a little history about the surrounding areas as well as some bird watching tidbits! An all around great guide for driving the USA,.

The book will be a Christmas gift for my family. I had to take a look at it before I wrapped it up. I can’t wait to start planning a road trip somewhere anywhere. I’m sure they will love it.

My son absolutely loves this book and toy :). He brought to his school and they read it there and everyone fell in love lol. Such a great and funny tale. The other skippy Jon Jones books are just as great too 🙂 they’ll defiantly give u a laugh lol :).

I bought all of the hardback SkippyjonJones books with a CD that Walmart sells! The books are awesome, and the author really gives you the hilarious Spanish accent English flavor of her books! We bought our first SkippyjonJones hardback with cd at my son’s kindergarten school book fair, and loved it so much that we needed MORE! He is now in the third grade, so we use them to help advance his reading.

He listens to the book and then reads it. He can re-listen to it, if he cannot sound out the words. They really help with independent reading, and with his Spanish accent for his Spanish class! Since, the second grade I have home schooled him with K-12 International, I really appreciate when he can independently work, so that I can get the next lesson ready!.

My family loves this series of books. My oldest grandson brought it home from school when he was in first grade and we have been reading the series ever since. Once again I bought this one to give as a gift.

I highly recommend!.
