20 Best Bird Seed For Cardinals And Blue Jays (2023 Updated)

This is the first time I bought this brand. It is really a blend of nothing but sunflower and safflower seed as advertised. No messy filler that the birds rarely eat. The price was excellent in my opinion and the birds certainly liked it.

I would buy again.

I ordered this small bag just to top my total to use a discount. I laughed as I looked out and noticed, yes, a cardinal in my back yard. He didn’t stick around, but still, he seemed to enjoy the blend.

I was sent a sample of this mix (Not TSC) to try out. Honestly, it isn’t all that. Very small seed which is ok for the little birds. Our larger visitors which include Northern Cardinals, etc. prefer larger seed blends.

I gave a 3 star because the sample bag was clean of non edibles. I usually mix my own which costs less and feeds more.

I’ve been very happy with the varieties of Lyric I have tried. Cardinal variety seems to be the favorite of the birds in my yard thus far, Cardinals have been at the feeders daily.

All the birds love this seed. Must fill feeder each day. Even squirrels will swing feeder in attempting to drop some seed.

I normally buy another brand but it was out of stock when I ordered. So, I found this brand and decided to try it. I am so glad I did. I have a hard time with the 20 Lb. bags and so I got two 10 Lb. bags for about the same price.

SO much easier for me to lift. As I have cats I have a few 20 Lb. empty containers from cat litter. I emptied the birdseed (with a funnel) into the containers. makes it easy to store the seed. I put several cups of the seed (a week’s worth) into a Ziplock bag (with a zipper) with a measuring cup which I take outside to feed the birds.

Try it if you are elderly or have arthritis. It is much easier than lifting a heavy container each morning. This brand is all I will order in future because of seeing so many more happy birds waiting on the fence for their breakfast each morning.

Not what I consider ‘Deluxe’ but nice clean seed that smelled fresh upon opening the bag. Seed is very small in size which works best for small birds and the mourning doves around here enjoy it. I put it in a platform feeder that hooks onto my garden pole so it’s accessible to any that want to stop by.

Finches, Sparrows and Doves, mostly. My feeders aren’t really busy in summer when natural food sources are available. Winter & Spring is a whole ‘nother story. Living on a fixed income, I have to find the best deals.

This is a reasonably priced, no inedible debris in the bag.

I ordered 3 bags for my mom she loves to feed the birds and will sit and watch them. She is in bad health and doesn’t go out much. I had these shipped to her house and I am very disappointed there is nothing deluxe about this bird seed.

It’s a little bit of sunflower seeds and then mostly that filler crap that the birds don’t like. The little round seed. I will not be ordering any more. I do not recommend this item.

This is such great birdseed. The best part is the squirrels don’t like it but the birds love it. We get quite a variety of birds from finches, wrens, cardinals, blue jays, bluebirds, Baltimore Orioles, doves.

they all love It! When I first started using this birdseed it took the birds about a week before they started to warm up to it. Now they can’t get enough of this spicy deliciousness. Another good thing about this birdseed is there are no shells.

I enjoy feeding the birds. especially in the winter! I HATE feeding the Squirrels — they are Not blocked by squirrel-proof bird feeders! I haven’t had the seed out for long, but it SEEMS like the squirrels aren’t into it.

otherwise it would be EMPTY in a DAY. now it takes a week!! I bought one ‘squirrel-proof feeder’ with a metal fence around a plastic area that held the seed. they ATE through the plastic. And, of course, the company that sold it to me on Ebay said that wasn’t covered by their 1 year warranty (I had only bought it a few weeks earlier).

SO. I cut a plastic water bottle to fit as a sleeve inside the bird-seed area and it seems to be working better. I have another ‘squirrel-proof’ bird feeder that is spring-loaded. Supposidly if a squirrel sits on the perch, it will close the gate.

it doesn’t close when SMALL squirrels perch!! I even have the squirrel proof things on my posts! They are worthless when you want the feeder to be BY a Privacy fence that the squirrels run along.

I live in Mid. Tennessee; I get a wide variety of wild birds feeding. I tried many different mixes but none compare to the Royal Wing Cardinal mix. While it will be weeks for my two feeders to empty using other mixes it’s about a week when I’ll need to replenish using the Cardinal Mix.

I was made aware of the preference when I placed two different mixes out, one in each feeder and almost literally they devoured the Cardinal mix ; not touching the other feeder. If that doesn’t say it all I don’t know what does.

I have purchased this product many times. In weeks it has gone up from 24. 99 to 27. 99 to 29. 99 and the bag I most recently purchased had more trash in it. I usually give TSC my buisness because quality products cost less than the local specialty Bird feed store….

Now there is very little cost difference and there is less trash in the specialty store feed- exact same blend.

We have tried many brands, from many companies at our house and this brand is by far the most popular for the birds that come to our yard. Since we started using this feed almost 2 years ago we’ve gone from the occasional Cardinal, once or twice a week, to families of Cardinals all day every day.

And we also have Bluebirds, Chickadees, Bluejays, Mourning Doves, Finches, Woodpeckers, Titmouse etc. etc. I can’t praise this feed enough.

The bag I got actually had more sunflower seeds than anything else, which makes me question the overall cost, but at least the birds ate it! Unlike cheap mixes that contain a lot of milo (this mix has NONE), the birds eat it all, and anything that is accidentally dropped or spilled becomes a meal for ground feeding birds, squirrels, and chipmunks.

I was hoping that the feed would attract back some of the birds that were scared off by aggressive starlings and grackles. The “riff raff” have disappeared in the last couple of months or so–someone suggested they’ve gone off to harass the farmers at harvest.

I haven’t seen any new birds come in, but the feeders are popular. Tons of cardinals (sometimes 6-8 at a time), mourning doves (who have figured out how to perch at a couple of feeders), English (house) sparrows, and house finches.

Sometimes bluejays drop by in the mornings, and as I started to write this, a Downy woodpecker started to eat from the tube feeder. Except for the remaining seed currently in the feeders, I’m actually all out of the Nut & Fruit.

I might order it again, or try one of their other mixes just to compare their popularity and give the birds some variety which they seem to appreciate. Definitely if you have birds that like nuts and fruit, give at least a small bag a try, and if it works well for your group of feathered friends, you can always order more.

This is the second or third time I’ve ordered this product and I believe it’s a good value. I put it out on my platform feeder and it attracts most of the bird species that visit my backyard. The only drawback is that it also attract many Starlings, Grackles, and House Sparrows, which I don’t particularly want.

I only put out a small amount in the morning, so these birds move on when the food runs out. Then I put out more later in the day for the other birds that couldn’t get to the feeder in the morning. I prefer to attract Cardinals, Blue Jays, Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Titmice, and Wrens.

Rationing this fruit and nut mix enables me to offer it without too much being wasted on unwanted birds.

My wife has been buying this exact item at a local hardware store here in Connecticut. I was happy to find the same item for an attractive price at Chewy so I ordered a bag along with our regular order of food for our dogs.

When the box arrived, the bag of seed had split open and I had to collect all the seed from the carton. My wife later showed me that the Chewy bird seed had way less fruit pieces and much fewer sunflower seeds.

Despite having the same SKU as the seed sold at our local hardware store, the quality of the Chewy seed seemed way inferior. Possibly Chewy got a bad batch of seed, but my wife said that she’s going back to getting this seed from the hardware store.

In supplying dog food to our four dogs, Chewy has been outstanding.

I have purchased a couple of Wild Delight products and my latest experience I have a bug problem in my home. Home has attached garage where I store the opened bags of bird seed in an enclosed cupboard.

Started feeding birds this summer. Just started having a tiny moth-type bug flying around the house but mostly in the kitchen. I Identified them as an Indian meal moth! We have found both the larva and moth in and around kitchen cupboards, walls, ceiling.

Exterminator #1 sprayed entire inside & outside of home. No change. Hoping Exterminator #2 will know how to rid our kitchen of them. I am also the person who checked the 3 different types of bird seed we have, and to the best of my ability, this is the only type seed that has these larva & bugs & the translucent shells they shed.

Ugh!.

These seeds are extremely popular in our back yard (in Rochester Mn). Cardinals come flocking as to many finches, nuthatches, chickadees, and doves. Some of the finches are persnickety though, they will flip through the seed, tossing much of it on the ground, till they find just the one that they want.

This is all to the delight of the squirrels and chipmunks that eat the seed that falls. Anything they miss the rabbits catch in the middle of the night.

Very happy with my order. I ordered 5 bags of birdfood and all was wonderful the only thing I found hard was it was delivered in one box which was way too heavy for me to bring in. I had to open up the box on the porch and take one bag at a time! Had to be a better way when ordering more than 2 bags!.

Bought this to try it out since I noticed the rather inexpensive price. I must say, for the money, this has a very good quality mix. Plenty of black oil sunflower seeds, & corn, to go with the millet, safflower, & other typical seed seen in mixes.

Birds seem to really like it also. Setup a new feeding station to feed the birds, & squirrels for the winter, & so far so good. Lots of chickadee, nut hatches, finches, juncos, blue jays, cardinals, etc.

, our usual winter birds here in the arctic tundra of WI/MN, as well as our pileated woodpeckers, downy’s, red heads, who stop by for the peanut butter suet they love. Been quite cold lately(avg. temps with wind chill have been probably -5 to -10 degrees last 6 weeks or colder) & our little winter birds are more than happy to be getting the extra food.

Squirrels also seem quite happy getting their critter crunch mix(peanuts, corn, pumpkin/sunflower seed, etc. ), they eat it faster than I can fill it lol. With the Kinnic River 100 feet from the feeding station we also have a small family of deer who stop by for some corn, & nibble on the tree bark.

Was a doe with her twin fawns but now they seem to have gained 2 more buddies for the winter. Living in town it’s rather unusual to have deer regularly, but they seem to be quite happy here in our back yard.

See them several nights a week, along with my youngster bunny I’ve watched grow, & fed corn/mix ever since I seen him/her with mom outside my window one night, so adorable when they are about the size of your fist.

Ever since he/she has regularly come to my deck to get some free corn I put out for him/her a couple nights a week. Getting quite big now, & he/she looks to have a new play-mate/buddy to hang with. My cat has also become quite accustomed to the bunny stopping by.

All I gotta do is say “bunny, bunny!”, & he comes running, hops up high onto his cat tree, & scans the area out where the bunny always eats, about 4 feet out from the window. He watches over the bunny nice & calm until he leaves.

‘Tis rather cute. I use Audubon critter mix, & corn/cracked corn regularly, along with Wagner’s Deluxe seed mix, & have absolutely zero complaints. Great products. Great results. Very Happy Critters :).

I could’ve sworn I’d purchased this Audubon Wild Bird Food previously with luck. I must’ve been wrong. While any sort of bird seed is still good to have on hand (esp. in my backyard where there are woodpeckers, rose-breasted grosebeak, etc.

), I won’t be buying this again and will cancel my pre-order of upcoming shipments. Within half a day all of the tiny, round seeds–maybe the mullet everyone complains about?–makes for great ground cover.

but not great bird food. The birds I love (see above) haven’t returned since I put it out. And that’s disappointing. Instead I have lots of squirrels scurrying around to pick up the rejects. Along with lots of sunflower seed and shells littering my grass which is already not in the best health.

I’m not looking for new sprouts of who knows what to spring up.

I am so disappointed in this product! The wild backyard birds here in Portland, OR were just going crazy over the food that I had been putting into the bird feeders (a type of Western Region Bird Food), so much so that I was having to refill it every other day.

I ordered a 20 lb. bag of what I thought was comparable bird food just to keep up with this level of feeder use. Wow. the birds literally stopped eating here. I have had this (seemingly similar) bird food in the same feeders now for days and the level has barely changed.

I thought because the brand was Audubon that it would be good, but it doesn’t appeal to the wild birds here at all. It is mostly small seed, with barely any of the black bigger seeds, which is not what it looks like from the picture.

I actually thought it was the wrong product when I opened the Chewy box. I will not be re-ordering this cheap bird food again.

The 1-star reviewers complain no birds come and that even squirrels will not eat these seeds. I give it 5-STARS and have used it for years!! I learned awhile ago that switching from your usual seed to this Safflower Seed is not going to go over well.

Don’t dishearten; it definitely takes awhile for the birds to come. Squirrels WILL NOT eat this seed! That was a HUGE plus for me! ! Once that first bird checks it out and then comes back and/or sends another to try it, the “tweet” goes out; waitlists needed.

I kid you not, we get so many birds esp cardinals, finches and many others; some I’ve yet to ID. My feeder hangs from a pole firmly set up on a slight hill, overlooking the grassy front court. The birds sing, chirp and swoop taking turns at the feed ports.

It’s a joy to see them and boy oh boy, those birds can eat!! I can’t keep up with them!.

I love this seed. Hey trolls, the birds love the soft twiggy stuff. Don’t knock it until you try it. There is NO twiggy stuff under the birdfeeder. And, birds have NO problem throwing seeds they don’t like down on the ground.

Beats the heck out of me, what they use that twiggy stuff for, but if they want to take it back. Or if they throw it down, the mice/chipmunks take it. Somebody is eating it. Pennington price is beyond reasonable, compared to the other brands.

And, I even feed the seed to my cockatiel. He loves it the best; never seen him eat the twiggy stuff, but never saw it lying on the floor of the cage either. Twiggy stuff seems to be quite welcome at my house, and they especially devour the seed.

Mainly Dust & Cracked Corn. There’s hardly anything the birds will eat in this mix. Especially with the Milo , & Wheat fillers. So much waste left over. If I wanted mostly cracked corn & filler I would have bought it separately.

This is just like the cheap economy mix you buy in the white & red bag. Birds here in Upstate NY don’t desire this at all.

As one or two others remarked, this stuff must be out of date or just plain old. After putting some into a bird house my mother in law got for me, I scattered some around the yard, which is all dirt, and we did not see a single bird drawn to it or the bird house.

But our little dog seemed to like finding bits of it on the ground for himself to eat. Otherwise, I wish I would have gotten something else for the money on spent on this. Good thing it wasn’t expensive, but not worth the money at all.

I live in the midwest (on the cusp of zone 5 & 6) and our birds gobble this stuff up. I recently switched to a different size that included peanuts and they snubbed it. Went back to this and they’re finishing my feeder off in one afternoon.

I’ll stick with this blend through the winter.

I love watching and feeding my backyard songbirds! It’s my favorite thing to do. They love this bird seed and it attracts a wide variety of birds.

Review for Pennington EarthSmart Ecozebo Bird Feeder and the Pennington Select Peanut Butter Delight High Energy seed & Suet Mix Wild Bird Feed: I received the feeder and was pleased with the lightweight, but seemingly strong, construction and design.

Included was the mix of both seed and peanut butter suet nuggets. I think the suet nuggets, in particular, are good for the birds who are winter-feeding and it had a good quantity of sunflower seeds which also seems to be a favorite of the birds in my Boise, Idaho area.

I did wonder if the nuggets would flow freely to the port openings due to their larger size, but I checked and it was not a problem. I thought, at first, there were no instructions as to the operation of the feeder and how to fill it, and how to hang it properly for best usage.

I then realized that the “instructions” were a statement of features such as the Twist & Lock top, and its operation, and info on the port openings and their benefits. It would be helpful if the statement of features highlighted the usage and features by simply using a larger font in certain areas which would have helped me notice the information much sooner.

The hanging apparatus consists of a plastic tether that is secured at the base of the twist & lock top and runs through a hole in the top of the lock and terminates with a small loop secured with a metal clamp.

Although I was able to hang the feeder by using string through the termination loop, it would have been nice to have had more options such as a larger loop which might have allowed me to loop through and onto a branch directly.

It worked fine, but the tether doesn’t seem too sturdy and I am wondering if it will break with the weight of the seed or if a squirrel lands on the feeder or strong winds affect it. Time will tell! It sure is a pretty addition to my back yard, however! So far, I have observed smaller birds such as House Finches, House Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and Black-capped chickadees using the feeder.

It is fun to watch them! I have not, as yet, noticed any squirrels on the feeder (good!) and no larger birds such as Doves or Quails or Magpies, although they will feed from the ground underneath the feeder if the seed drops there.

I am looking forward to enjoying this EarthSmart Ecozebo Bird Feeder and the Pennington Select Peanut Butter Delight High Energy Seed & Suet Mix Wild Bird Feed for the benefit of all of the birds which visit my yard each day in all seasons.

This is my “go to” bird seed. It keeps peace around here. When the feeders go out suddenly there is a riot. We had a bumper crop of blueberries this year on our three mature bushes and enjoyed them immensely.

There was one picking left of them when the bird feeders ran out of seed. Well, besides being “honest” I can be a tad “lazy” at times, too. The birds had miraculously left the blueberries alone and we had been happily devouring them.

So, after the sunflower seeds had been gone for a few days I went out to get the rest of the blueberries. it was a massacre!!! Those feathered dinosaurs had devoured everything last one of the blueberries!!!! Leaving a few tattered ones hanging there as a warning to me to not let the sunflower seeds run out again or.

I was next!!!! Innyhoo, I learned my lesson and won’t be letting the feeders run out again!!!! The bigger the bag the cheaper the price on these, too! They do have some debris in the bags. a few sticks and twigs.

But, the debris tells me that the seeds are not over-processed and there’s really little of the debris. I hate to admit it, but I *have* bought other brands of black oil sunflower seeds. and regretted it.

The quality that you described is not what Pennington Seed strives to produce. Even after your unpleasant experience with our product, we’re thankful that you chose to reach out to us so that we may make improvements.

Unfortunately, 2020 was a demanding year in our industry. Our seed suppliers have depleted their coffers and until harvest they will not be able to sell us product. We have had to resort to buying off the market from small farmers.

These smaller operations do not have the more sophisticated machines to clean the product and our sophisticated machinery was designed to only clean the smaller debris and not the larger trash. Our usual suppliers clean the larger debris before we get it.

Once harvest is done, we hope to offer our usual standard of product. “.

I only purchase “waste free” bird seed and Kaytees brand is a really good one! It’s the first bag I’ve seen so far that has the suet pellets in it. The Blue Jays, Woodpeckers, Titmice, Nuthatches, and Chickadees love it! The Doves, Juncos, and Finches eat the other seeds.

There is literally nothing left at the end of the day. I feed them from my deck and feeders in the trees and I love that there is no mess to clean up. The waste free is a little pricier than regular bird seed, but so worth it! Highly recommend!.

I bought this specifically because it came in a plastic container. The lid has a nice hole to fill the bag of seeds. Seed a bit more expensive with this combo, but I liked the combo and container storage feature.

I have three socks that I fill regularly and love that it has an easy pouring method through the lid rather than just one big hole. The seeds were fresh and dry, which I was happy to see. The Seeds are of good quality and very convenient that facilitate the reloading of the feeder.

Since Nyjer seed goes bad after a couple of months, it makes sense to buy small quantities;).

I bought this because I am trying to find a bird seed that will not make a mess. This is NOT the birdseed I can use on my patio. I bought three of these and I am so disappointed! The birds seem to love some of it because they flock to my bird feeder on my patio, but they throw out the cracked corn all over my patio.

I also have some ground feeding birds, including doves, but they don’t want the cracked corn either! I have no idea which birds like cracked corn, but apparently not in Southern California! Why they call this “no waste” is beyond me!.

Either the bag needs to be thicker or the packing needs to be better; maybe both. There’s always a hole in the bag with nyjer seed leaking out. The product is fine. It’s just the packaging.

Was completely out of birdfeed and not able to get it in my local place and decided to get it from Chewy as I’m already a very satisfied customer and I wasn’t disappointed. They seem to love it and although I don’t speak “bird” for an actual review I’m going to order some more for them as every scrap gets eaten.

I can’t keep my feeder filled. words out- come on over finches! How do I stop? At this rate I can go through 50lbs a month! This seed seems better than the last brand. Beautiful lime green and brilliant yellow finches as well as others feast outside my windows – I love it!.

I bought this to feed the birds while on vacation. They blow through the bird feeder food too quickly. It was on a raised platform. When we came back home it was completely gone. The day I put it out there was some interest in it and apparently it was a hit.

We live out on the Arizona desert and have all kinds of wild birds especially quail. The bird blocks offered at most feed stores and other places are solid blocks like a salt block you’d set out for cows to lick but instead are highly compressed seed.

birds have a tough time breaking them down to eat them. Even the quail who scratch like chickens do can’t get much off of those other blocks. We have found that this block is much easier for the birds to eat and they flock to it especially early morning and just before sundown.

We do have to set it up off of the ground because cotton tail rabbits also enjoy them as do Javelina- ( resembles a wild pig) and they’ll munch on a block until it’s gone unless we put it out of their reach.

This is the best block we have found.

I love the quail block itself, as to my quail, doves, and other birds along with the cottontails. However, the last time I went to purchase the blocks, there was no handle. These blocks weigh 20+ pounds and without the handle to lift and carry them, they’re very difficult to handle.

I’m a 74-year old female, and need that handle to carry the blocks from the garage to where I put them out. I usually be 2 at a time, every 4-5 weeks, year round. So in my mind that’s a customer you would want to keep.

We feed birds year round and have purchased Sunflower seeds for Farm and Fleet for many years. Our most recent purchase was not the package pictured above, but rather a green and orange bag with the name Valley Splendor.

Yes, these are black oil sunflower seeds, but they have much more chaff (hulls and stems). My unscientific observation is they have something like 10% waste in the bag. If Valley Splendor continues to supply sunflower seeds to Farm and Fleet, they need to do a much better job of cleaning the seed.

Should Farm and Fleet continue to carry this inferior grade of bird seed we will be forced to look elsewhere to feed the birds. We have had so many great experiences with Farm and Fleet and hope this anomaly will turn out to be just that – and they will get back to the high quality we have grown accustomed to purchasing.

Product is great and I usually buy a couple of bags a month. However, the price went sky high and the sale price is 50% more than the normal sale price $19. 99 to $29. 99. I cannot afford this and will be purchasing my black oil sunflower seeds elsewhere where they are much more affordable.

Too bad because I usually came into the store and made at least $100 in additional purchases every time I picked up the bags of seed.

Good bird food. contains a lot of good millet and black oiler sunflower seeds. If you don’t want any cracked corn, don’t buy this product. There’s quite a bit of cracked corn in the mix. It doesn’t have any milo, which is a plus.

I’ve been using this seed for many years. The sparrows love it. Also some other kinds of birds. There’s nothing wrong with sparrows, they need food too.

beautiful sunflowers, that made this delicious sunflower seeds, that my birds love. Attracts all types of birds. Good for open tray or regular tube feeders as well. A small amount of twigs in this bag but oat of processing.

Hello, FYI I got multiple bags of various bird food that were all fantastic, according to the birdies, so to save time and finger cramps im just gonna paste the same review for all them. Just wanted everyone to know that when they see the same review for multiple products, that im a real person, not company employee and all the birdies LOVED the food!!! As a person who simply feeds the birds so they have something to eat and of course they’re beautiful to watch, lol, not knowledgeable about specific birds or seed types or anything like that.

I purchased this based on the reviews. As soon as I put it out my bird feeders were swamped with bully birds. Worst bird food ever! I had to remove all of the seed to get rid of the bully birds. There is So much filler and milo that no birds will eat.

I have used this brand for several years. I always have a large variety of birds visit my feeders. Rural King was out once so I bought a cheaper brand. My birds hated it! They would hardly touch it. When Rural King was back in stock, I threw away the old stuff and my birds were happy!! I guess they are spoiled.

Bought this as I had run out of my usual bird food. Unsure what’s in it, but the birds obviously find it delicious. I live in the middle of a small old town, with a town house sized garden. I used to get sparrows, blue t*ts blackbirds and a robin.

The word has obviously spread amongst the birds about the delicious food as i now get many more of the latter birds, but now I also have visits from greenfinches, goldfinches and coal t*ts. The food is not cheap, but well worth it as obviously a very good quality mixture.

Very good quality bird food. the complete bags have all the necessary seeds etc in one bag, making it easier and knowing you can feed various breeds. My birds are always ready in the morning waiting for their feeding containers to be filled.

Goes very quickly as i have lots of various breed of birds in my large garden, its a delight to watch them in their various feeding stations.

birds appear to like this better than previous mix bought, but still prefer sunflower hearts seeing the quantities left in the feeders the day after filling both up! however disappointed to notice after ordering the offer of 20% extra the bag was the standard bag? probably my fault as the page did state last one!.
