The Heddon Spook was the first and is still the best walk-the-dog topwater lure for all types of predator fish. Freshwater, saltwater – it doesn’t matter – when you need to walk a topwater, you reach for a Spook.
The Chug’n Spook adds more water disturbance, chugging and spitting action, and a new sound to the Spook family. Despite the cupped face, it walks-the-dog with ease. A big One Knocker rattle provides even more attraction, and it comes in saltwater patterns and hardware as well.
In fresh or salt, the Chug’n Spook flat-out catches fish.
I’ve used the full size and Jr while wading and drifting from a boat. One day had 11 speckled trout to 24” and 7 redfish on the Jr version, and have had back-to-back mid-twenty inch redfish on the full-sized.
Needs to be worked properly with short or slower (less vigorous) twitches than Super Spook or One Knocker.
I’m very familiar with this plug. I had a couple that I gave away to fish catching friends. While I was quick to receive 2 units from SWE (thanks for the customer support & follow through) I was quite disappointed with the lure’s coloration.
The factory Bone colored lures were really a taupe or beige color. Had I been in the store I would not have picked these units and gone with a different coloration like Bunker or baitfishy.
I bought this bait about a week ago in the 1/2oz speckled trout color. As the title says, this bait is really easy to walk. I fished my chugn spook on a 7ft fast action rod with 30lb braid and a 12ft mono leader.
After fishing it for an hour I actually found it harder to NOT walk the bait. You can hit it pretty much as hard as you want and it will still walk. You can make the bait do a larger aggressive walk or little wobble like a frog.
The only way to not walk this bait is to tap it too softly. Excellent product, can’t wait to take it somewhere else where there are fish.
With extremely life-like motility in the water as well as authentic coloration, these lures are sure to fool fish into biting on your line. Saltwater baits are made from natural ingredients that release 400 times more scent than plastic baits.
Formulated especially for ocean gamefish, Berkley Gulp! Saltwater is so potent it can actually OUTFISH live bait. Plus it’s 100 percent biodegradable for a cleaner environment. Stock up on a full selection of Gulp! Saltwater baits and you’ll experience more action than ever! They all look, smell, and move just like the real thing.
All the colors work great! This is the best doormat fluke bait there is on the market. If it’s not on your boat, you are making a mistake. Many, many days it outfishes live minnows, tinker mackerel or peanut bunker – something unheard of many decades ago.
No cast nets or traps needed. The 5″ and 6″ grub catch keepers and monster mats alike. Keep them soaked in the Gulp Alive brine for best scent dispersion. I promise you’ll hit the flatties. Don’t mess with all the imitator baits coming out.
It’s like fish crack……. they consume it like they wanna die. Unfortunately up here on the east coast everything hits it destroys it and you have to buy more. Really I don’t know who’s more addicted the fish or the person that’s buying it.
The Gulp has become the staple for fishing here in south Jersey. It consistentlyproduces even better than minnows. one thing is that they hold much longer than live bait. They are just quite expensive and this current offer from Dicks along with the rebate makes it easy to stock up.
The only thing that I didn’t like about the purchase was that the products arrived at different times, packaged differently and from different shippers. Because the rebate required UPC codes off the packages, it was difficult to hold them until they all arrived to then fill out the rebate forms.
The Acme Tackle Kastmasters have been putting fish in the boat for years. From black bass to pan fish and stripers to salmon, a wide range of fish species have fallen victim to the Kastmaster. The secret is in the wild, erratic action they create, flickering and flashing through the water like an injured or frightened baitfish.
Their balanced, aerodynamic design also helps eliminate line twist on the retrieve, and makes them great long distance casters.
Sometimes schooling spanish mackerel are keyed in on very small glass minnows. Your typical lures may just be too large to get bites; even though you know the spanish are around they can be quite picky.
This is the exact situation where I use this lure. Throw it out, reel it fast and don’t stop, and buy an extra or two or tie with some wire because you will get bitten off. Also know that you will likely not catch the biggest spanish or kings with this lure again because of the small size, if you’re looking for bigger fish a trolled yo-zuri crystal minnow is your best friend.
Fabrication quality seems to be going down hill on this classic lure, The edge where the floro paint meets the bare stainless on other side is uneven and chipped,. and the treble is rather cheep, you’ll have to change it out.
A northwest coast favorite for halibut. Tough and durable. Fish at depths up to 300 feet. Wide swimming tail for greater action and visibility. A favorite of all saltwater species, the swimming tail action of this bait tempts big fish in a wide range of applications.
It’s perfect for use on jigs or as a tantalizing trailer. Use this grub when you are in search of larger saltwater species and prepare for plenty of heart-stopping action.
I use the 6 inch gulp on a bucktail for fluke. It definitely attracts fish. Unfortunately it attracts the interference fish like sea bass who rip the tails off. The gulp sells for $7. 00-$8. 00 a pack and there are only 4 in a pack.
It’s frustrating when the tail gets ripped off as soon as it hits the bottom. At that point I put on an otter tail. It’s not the same action as the original tail , but seems to work when they’re biting.
Also, as far as gulp goes, the gulp in the bags seems to be a harder material than the gulp in the jars. I’m not the only one who notices this. Just wish it held up better. They need to incorporate fibers into the material.
Or perhaps that’s their marketing scam to get you to buy more. It gets expensive , but does work if you don’t have bait.
The Redfish Magic Spinnerbait is the ultimate redfish bait. Designed with a heavy gold-plated stainless R-bend wire, gold-plated components and 24-kt. -gold #4 Colorado blade. The Redfish Magic spinnerbait utilizes a fantastic Redfish Magic Flats Jighead with chip-resistant paint, 3-D eyes and an oversized saltwater-resistant needlepoint hook.
The Glass Minnow body is made from a revolutionary material that is incredibly durable and soft with awesome action.
I bought this bait because it was suggested as a reddish lure on google, and it has not disappointed. I’ve even caught a largemouth bass with it, the only problem with the lure is the plastic bait doesn’t stay securely on the lure and has since come off.
So I put a 3. 75 rage swimmer and it and it has actually attracted larger fish.
Only on the Big Island of Hawaii do we have Black sand and White sand beaches. And the fishing environment is anywhere from 20 foot cliffs to brakish water with hardly any waves. The good news is the Redfish Magic performs well in all this saltwater environments.
In rough surf or high cliff environments I use the redfish Magic behind a one half, three quaters, or a one ounce torpedo lead for casting distance and stability in raging water. I do some calibration so the lure is bouncing on the bottom without hanging up.
White water dwelling fish such as the moi(Threadfin) find it hard to resist the redfish magic and probably mistake it for their favorite food the Goby, because of the gold spinner. In the brackish water areas I skim the lure on the surface and create a commotion.
The Papio (Jack Crevelle) Explode on these lures and there is nothing better in fishing then witnessing a surface hit on these lures. If you run the lures a little slower with the stop and go retrieve the Kaku (Barracuda) will hit the lure on the drop.
The Kaku has a hard time resisting the redfish magic on the drop. And also on a mediem slow retrieve in areas with small waves the lure will get hits from Wahanui(Forktail Snapper. This usually happens in the black sands a Punaluu beach park.
Good lure. Highly versitile for various saltwater enviromments. Would highly recommend this lure for salt water fishing.
Great cheap alternative to skirted spinnerbaits. Casts well, blade spins and flashes through the toughest cover for SMALLMOUTH BASS. The chartreuse minnow body is compact to cast into the tightest pockets and holds up well.
The Shad Assassin has proven to be as deadly in saltwater as it is in freshwater. The Saltwater Shad Assassin has become one of the most popular lures for gamefish; redfish and trout absolutely love this bait and the best kept secret on the Gulf Coast of Florida is the Saltwater Shad for catching Snook! Tarpon, flounder, dolphin, stripers, you name it, the Saltwater Shad Assassin is one of the most productive lures on the market today.
I remember using these as a young kid, they were the first “fluke” type bait that i used. they are my go to bait. tons of different kinds of fish bite these baits! I have caught walleye, large mouth, small mouth, a crappie once, pike, a Musky!, and even a carp.
such a fun bait to use. they skip really well under trees and docks. 4 stars because they dont look like they are made very well compared to other fluke products. the tail section always is sloppy looking.
my only complaint. and its just an opinion. fish still bite um!.
Went fishing out on the flats in vero beach FL. After fiive hours of fishing up against mangroves, structure, and grass flats, caught absolutely nothin! My buddies were fiishing with live shrimp, jus rippin in snapper, so I switched to live shrimp, started catching all species, even species I’ve never seen in FL.
After 2 casts over oyster beds they ripped apart, was using them with 1/4 jighead in all different colors These soft plastics are nothing but hype! Dont believe the hype! They dont work!.
Bass Assassin’s take on the Curl tail is just a little bit different. Using a streamlined body profile, the Curly Shad gives you a little of the Bass Assassins well known profile, but with the big action from a thin curl tail.
As this bait drops down, it mimic’s the death spiral of a real baitfish.
I’m using this one for 2 years for fishing on lower Volga river, near Astrakhan, Russia. My favorite game there is pikeperch, something very close to American walleye or zander, and catfish. I’m devoted to jigging, and this lure became an instant hit for me and my friends.
Shape is optimal for strong currents typical there, and bright colors with shiny particles provoke bites even in bad days. Last April this little “Chicken on a chain” brought me my best fish so far, a 38-pound catfish:) The only minor problem, mentioned already in earlier review – it’s not tough enough.
6-8 pikeperch bites, and it’s not the most toothy fish ever, and you have to change it. But anyway, this thing pays off:).
i’m prototyping now a football mold. putting in small pockets for the screw loks , or springs. using 3/0 and 4/0 mustad swim bait hooks that i had to slightly modify. prototyping a chatter blade also to attach to the swimbait hook with a #3 duolock snap swivel.
also made a small plastic tool to help slide a rubber skirt over the spring if i want to use a skirt. now i have a totally weedless rig with a chatter blade that i can swim over emerging grass in the spring.
the first baits im going to try are the bass assassins for rock fish.
These are one of the best baits for walleye fishing and man do they hammer this bait. I will not use any other bait after trying these. These are a must have for monster walleyes! I have already caught multiple fish over 20″ and a 23″, 24.
The C. A. L. Jerk Bait may be fished topwater or sub-surface. Combine with long neck 3. 5/0 or 5/0 hooks and a pinch weight, and you have a deadly shallow water lure for salt or fresh water. They also mate perfectly with short and long shank jig heads.
These folks are making the best soft baits as far as I’m concerned. Never had a bad day with these. Pair it with the right jig head- I like the ones with the shiny eyes, and they seem to do the trick every time.
The DOA soft jerk baits are my go to artificial baits when I’m fishing for Spotted Sea Trout and Redfish. I use both the split-tail and paddle tail versions in various colors, including silver & black, Chartreuse, Rootbeer/Gold Glitter, and Glow.
I use a weighted weedless hook for the split-tails and a 1/4 jig head for the paddle tails, and I can honestly say, they have never let me down. Usually, when nothing else 8s working, short of live bait, I can confidently switch over to a CAL Jerk bait, and 9 times out of 10 I will get a hit!! Highly Recommended!!.
I have used D. O. A products for a long time and these all chartreuse with silver glider have proven to be my favorite. It works good on trout, red, Spanish mackerel and flounder so far, even on some other non game fish.
The soft plastic bait is durable so you’ll catch more fish with one lure.
The DOA TerrorEyz are designed to set horizontally, even on a vertical drop, and this unique rigging method allows for an extremely high hook up ratio. The design also allows this lure to hold in strong current.
This patented design has been proven to catch anything from freshwater Crappie and Walleye to saltwater Tarpon and Spanish Mackerel.
First time using the TerrorEyz and immediately got strikes on first few casts. I was fishing the edge of a flat where there was some depth change and the TerrorEyz got hit repeatedly and eventually I hooked a small barracuda who broke my line as I brought him near my kayak.
I’m definitely buying another jighead or two to use with my two remaining lure bodies in the three pack.
I’ve been using this style of DOA lure for many years and have caught just about every species of Florida’s fish on it. It takes a little tweaking sometimes but if it swims straight just wait. Fish it extremely vertical or extremely fast pay attention and you can map out your area.
A tad on the expensive side so super glue will be your friend.
Heddon Super Spook lures are one of the most popular saltwater baits Iconic “walk the dog” action is known to catch fish Internal rattle 5″ long 7/8 ounce weight Wide gap/short shank saltwater treble hooks Stainless split rings Heddon Super Spook lures are productive saltwater baits.
Heddon has been making lures since 1894. While the Super Spook might not be a century old, it’s been around a while! The simple, proven, Super Spook features durable saltwater grade hardware that is both corrosion resistant and strong.
Quality construction and vibrant finishes help these lures inspire confidence in even the least experienced anglers. One reason the Super Spook is so popular is it’s easy “fishability”. Just cast it towards your honey hole, and give your slack line a quick snap or two for that “walk the dog” action that drives gamefish nuts.
Sea Trout love this lure, as do most other inshore species – even big freshwater fish will get in on the action.
The Bomber Saltwater Long Shot slender minnow bait was engineered to maximize four main characteristics that make up a fish-catching machine. First, an internal weight transfer system allows the rattle to roll to the tail end of the bait on the cast, then rolls back into position when the lure hits the water.
That, along with the aerodynamic shape that cuts through the air, makes for super-long-distance casts even into a stiff wind. Next, the Long Shot’s wide swimming action mimics a damaged baitfish – a strike trigger for all species of gamefish.
Another characteristic that sets the Bomber Saltwater Grade Long Shot apart from the rest are the color patterns and decoration that are regionally specific. Whether you’re fishing the Gulf off the Texas coast or big waters anywhere, there’s a color pattern that fits your needs.
Finally, if you’ve created a lure that big saltwater fish want to eat, it better be strong enough to handle the battle, time-after-time, and the Long Shot is up to the task. It comes equipped with 4x Saltwater hooks and heavy duty hardware.
This cast pretty well. Not as well as some of the other plastic swimmers out there, but those also don’t have the nice Bomber swimming action. Plus, the price is right. First night I used this I was able to hook up a few times.
Wish I could find some of the other colors in the large size in stock. Recommended.
I met a guy from 3W Sportfishing while fishing for spring schoolie stripers and he gave me a Bomber long shot to try out , he said ” just let me know what you think in a few weeks” I dont know what it is about the longshot.
if it’s how uts weighted or what. but I cant beleive how this lure gets crushed my stripers. It worked so well I went back to a couple other lures I was throwing before the longshot, just to see if it was the lure or just that the bite was on fire.
one blue in 20mins +/-. I put the longshot in a bunker pattern on my speed clip made 3 casts and POW ! Fish on !! Really a fantastic lure , not just more tackle bag candy. Bomber has made some excellent baits for Salt and fresh for decades.
This is one lure that will ALWAYS be in my Saltwater Tackle bags.
I bought these for deep water lure fishing for Striped Bass. I’ve not gotten it wet yet (most of my spots are shallow waters where Zo Zuri Hydros and Mag Darters are better suited), but this one has a reputation for being very effective.
Shad Tail is a mainstay for probing waters from inches deep to ocean depths. Made in many popular colors or our own custom color combos, these lures can catch anything from freshwater Large Mouth Bass to saltwater Seatrout, Redfish, Flounder and Fluke.
CAL helped me place in the First Annual Treasure Coast Snook Challenge. Used “First Light Jig” , “sorry DOA they sponsored the tournament” Chartreuse in color with CAL Chartreuse tail. Very effective in the stained water.
Have 7 different colors and all work, must chose for what you target and where. Tight lines and fill your tackle bag with the CAL!! Ps won’t tear first fish.
Rapala Saltwater X-Raps take the original X-Rap concept, and expands upon it, with new shapes and colors. These baits are designed for offshore, inshore and freshwater fisheries. These are shallow diving lures, whose natural buoyancy suspends the lure during pauses in the retrieve.
X-Rap lures have premium finishes including prominent scales and lateral line on the fuselage to capture and flash light like a beacon. This Rapala slashbait action cuts, darts and slashes its way through the water.
Intended for multiple species, with an internal long-cast system built in, fishing the X-Rap will get any angler’s adrenaline pumping.
I have been using Rapalas for years and I have caught plenty of fish on them. Lately I’ve been getting into Smallmouth fishing and have found that they are partial to Fluorescent colors. The X-Rap 10 in Hot-Head, Hot-Pink, Clown and Silver Fluorescent Chartreuse UV are deadly for Smallies.
This lure has all the action of their more expensive cousins at less than half the price. They suspend, they can be jerked, walked underwater, snapped, and whatever other way you want to work them. Don’t get me wrong, I love and use Megabass, Lucky Craft, Ima and others, but to purchase 10 of those baits would cost at least $200 and up.
To purchase the same amount of Rapalas would be anywhere from $100-$120. As technical as fishing has gotten with all the different colors and actions and variable ways to use the same lure, I’m 61yrs old, yes old school and on a budget, the moto is Keep It Simple.
With something that is tried and true, you can never go wrong. X-Rap 10 and Deep 10.
Awesome lure and performs really well. Many ways of fishing this lure whether it be jigging or slow-fast retrieve it just works. Also works well at day or night time fishing as well as fresh or saltwater fishing.
Whether rivers, beach-surf, pier, or off a boat lure is just awesome and really easy to master. Fish cant resist it especially this color.
DOA Shrimp have a live shrimp look and swimming action. With their downward facing, vibration legs and consistent level drop rate DOA Shrimp Lures have successfully fooled almost every species of fish that feed on live shrimp.
Just to name a few, DOA Shrimp have caught trout, snook, redfish, flounder, tarpon, ladyfish, jacks, sheepshead, large & small mouth bass. Fishermen need only to present the lures with a natural slow retrieve to be insured of many memorable days on the water.
I really like the way this lure looks. I expect great results from when I get to fish this lure. I didn’t give it 5 stars because I haven’t had the chance to fish it yet; but again, I expect great results when I do!.
If you’re sight casting and the fish are hungry, these will work just fine. These are great lures for sight fishing. Just cast the lure behind or to the opposite direction of the fish. Reel in very very slow, give your rod a few twitches to let it bounce a bit.
When the lure falls to the bottom, that is when they will strike it. Glow is my favorite pattern to use. However, I wouldn’t use these lures if you plan on fishing off of a pier. Also, the hooks tend to rust a lot once the lure is used heavily.
Other than that, this is a great lure to use if you cannot use live bait.
It is a great alternative to live bait. Its bloodworm scent is long-lasting and is especially useful in attracting a wide variety of saltwater fish. This worm lure is ideal for the new anglers or for anyone who is not comfortable handling real worms.
It is ideal to lure in the big catch without having the hassle of dealing with live bait. Color: Multicolor.
Product catches fish. A good alternative to real worms. Storage is no problem, you can keep in your pocket. With the variety of flavors, you can cover all of the bases. Stays on the hook better than live bait/the real thing.
We, my wife and I have been using fishbite bloodworm for years, fishing in the surf of Brigantine and Ocean City new Jersey. They have always work great for us. We could not wait till the water got above 70 degrees to use them.
They would out fish blood worms all the time catching Kingfish/whiting. We have won surf fishing tournaments using them. I have just found out that they make a cold water version. I will never buy blood worms again.
We have recently moved to South Carolina. We will be surf fishing out of Edisto Beach state park, on the beach. Since everybody down here uses shrimp I am purchasing some in shrimp. Will see which works best.
I’ve been using Fishbites for many years now with great results! It stays on the hook very well, releases a good scent in the water, and it actually catches fish when compared to Berkley Gulp! and even when compared to the real thing! This stuff works every bit as good as the real thing! I use the Bag O’Worms Bloodworm Alternative in the Longer Lasting scent formula (I have yet to try the Sandworm flavor/scent) and I catch Spot, Croaker, and White Perch all day long.
The Fishbites 0093 E-Z Squid Saltwater Long Lasting Bait can be used on a bare hook or as a trailer on a jig or skirt. Each bait strip is 1/2 inch wide and 12 inches long and there are 2 strips per bag.
The lures are made of biodegradable hydrogel plastic making them environmentally safe. They can be used to catch a whole host of saltwater species. Just cut it hook it and cast it. How E-Z is that? Fishbites are the result of a lifelong passion for fishing and decades of scientific research.
Carr Specialty Baits Inc. is a family-owned business founded in 2000 in St. Augustine Florida by avid angler and world renowned marine researcher Dr. William Carr and his family.
The 2 inch Vudu Shrimp is absolutely the best bait for piers, docks, and night time fishing. If you fish under lights, you know that trout and reds love small shrimp gliding around the glow of the lights.
For best results Egret Baits recommends light spinning with 6-8lb test. A crappie rod is perfect. This little Vudu is also deadly on Crappie and panfish.
The Sea Shad series has that same Fat Belly profile that you see on all Bass Assassin shads- but with the more traditional paddle tail design. The Paddle tail gives it a unique action that drives fish wild!.

Capture the big fish with the right tools, like these Strike King Magic Saltwater Speckled Trout spinnerbiat fishing lures. This item is specially designed to reel sea trout in. Its speckled design and added flash from an under-spin blade work reliably in stained or clear water.
You can control the depth of these saltwater trout lures by your rate of retrieval. This model has a black nickel needlepoint hook. It’s available in different sizes.
I don’t know about Trout but it works like magic on Hybrid Bass. I swapped out the jigs that came with my “Captain Macs” umbrella striper rigs for the smaller “Trout Magic” underspin in 1/8 oz. and the results were immediate.
It got even better when I started to include an odd one in the group either “Electric Chicken” or “Pink Glow” in the Z-Man “MinnowZ” 3 inch are so far my favorites. For the main group I like “Pearl”, “Opening Night” and “Bad Shad”.
I often catch more than one at a time, so far I’m up to three at once. These things take a beating and keep on ticking.
