20 Best Yarn For Sweaters Crochet (2023 Updated)

I brought these little skeins knowing exactly what I was getting. I believe these are going to be great for my little people projects, like my Harry Potter projects & my Marvels Universe projects. The only thing I’m concerned with is the colors.

The colors are not labeled It can become a little confusing when making little people that require a specific color.

The color assortment was great, but the size of the skein really doesn’t allow for more than a cap or mittens for a newborn. These should really be described as “bonbons” and not the usual balls or skeins.

Because of this, I consider the pics and post somewhat misleading. For the price charged, you could purchase five to six full-size skeins at WalMart or another retailer. If you’re seeking a color assortment of yarn for small, almost mini-projects (definitely nothing bigger than sock or bib), then you’ll enjoy this purchase.

A nice sampler package that offers a nice variety of popular colors. I make trinket boxes using plastic canvas so I don’t need quantity of yarn for my projects but shades of colors that are in the same family to achieve a nice result.

I have made the same cardigan twice using yarn from HL. The cardigan took me 8 days to complete both times. I am currently making it a third time, and I bought this yarn instead of the HL yarn. I am on the 14th day because I can’t crochet with this yarn as quickly as I normally could.

The reason is because this yarn splits and snags CONSTANTLY! On average, about every 6th stitch, I have to take all the loops off my hook and start the stitch over. It is impossible to get any speed going with this yarn.

This cardigan is nothing but half double crochets, probably one of the fastest stitches you can do, but not with this yarn. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and I have never, ever had this problem with any other yarn.

I am also certain it is not a problem with my Furls hook – those are the only hooks I use and I’ve never had a problem with them either. I absolutely despise this yarn. You couldn’t pay me to ever use it again.

I really love this yarn. I had several skeins in my stash that I bought several years ago. I bought a few 10 packs on clearance here. This will give me enough yarn to knit several sweaters, using the older skeins in stash for contrasting colors in Nordic designs.

A 10 pack gives plenty to knit an adult sweater and leaves a few extra skeins to use as contrast in other sweaters. These newer skeins appear smaller than the old skeins, though both are 100 gram skeins.

The yardage on the older skeins is slightly greater. I have found this brand to work beautifully with some of the patterns in my vintage knitting magazines.

Been knitting with Patons Classic Wool worsted for years. I do many felted items, mittens, hats, slippers, even bird houses. Patons is the best. NEVER had a problem. All my items are knit with two strands held together.

Over the years I have added to my Patons Classic Wool stash. I would pick it up at Joanne’s with a coupon or when it was on sale. Then Joanne’s quit carrying it. I would also purchase it at AC Moore until they went out of business and closed.

My go to place now is Michael’s. They came into my area. Thank you Michael’s. When I teach the felting technique, I recommend Patons.

I knit double thick cuffed beanies for the unhoused neighbors in my community, using an Addi Express. Each beanie uses one skein. Wool-Ease is the only yarn I have ever used. My Addi works great with it.

Tip: Every skein or two, rub down the machine with a cloth with a little squirt of food grade silicone spray on it to reduce static build-up that can cause split or dropped stitches. We like the 20% wool in the hope that it will help add some warmth when the weather is wet.

The recipients really like their beanies. We wish that Blick would carry a chocolate brown, as the umber is too pale for our purposes. Our recipients currently like choosing among black, nightshade, forest heather, flint, and tawny port, and would love to have chocolate brown too.

I ordered this for curbside pickup and it was not plain white. I couldn’t see the silver thread online and nothing in the description mentioned Starlight (metallic name on linbrand. com) on Joann. com.

There was literally no way to tell that this was not plain white. I like wool ease but no one really wants this yarn. They have oodles of balls of this stuff and nothing in plain white. I don’t know if the Joann in Redmond even carries plain white, as there was nothing to exchange.

I am keeping it for now in hopes that the next city over has some so I can exchange it for white, thus retaining the sale price.

I bought the blush heather and used one skein to make a scarf consisting of 11 rows, each being approximately 154 chains, and the scarf having an alternating single crochet/double crochet pattern. I am a beginner and used the larger-sized lion brand yarn to make such a scarf as well, but this yarn seemed a little harder for me to use for like the first three rows due to my hook catching on separate pieces of the strand of yarn several times.

However, the scarf turned out quite lovely. Overall, the yarn was soft, warm, and of a nice color.

Really nice yarn, I made a colourwork sweater with it with no issues. Very soft and comfortable. Unfortunately, the price of this yarn has gone up by a few dollars within a week. I likely won’t be getting it again, but if you feel like treating yourself (or you’re working more than a minimum wage job) I’d say it’s a fantastic yarn.

Great product! I use this yarn for when I am crocheting any wearable clothing items (tops, hats) because it’s soft and has a slight shine which I love! The shine makes my work look high quality and soft! I love it!.

This is my ‘go-to’ yarn for use in my Addi and Sentro knitting machines. Smooth as silk, never an issue. Only downside is I wish they made more colors. Definitely recommended!

I bought this yarn for a sweater to make my husband. He chose the Pewter color, so I looked at the yardage listed, and it says 148 yards per skein. Upon receiving my yarn (of which, I was thrilled with the color), I noticed that on the label it says there’s only 125 yards of yarn.

So now I have to go out and buy three more skeins just to be able to make my husband’s sweater. Very disgruntled with this, because they don’t sell this at my local store, so I can’t just go out and get it there.

I don’t want to have to pay shipping again. I’m really upset about it, honestly. I just wish the website would have the correct information listed.

I am a veteran and disabled and I crochet lap blankets for veterans in the hospital. I love using Patons Shetland Chunky yarn. The texture is nice to the touch and easy to work with. I like the weight for what I use it for.

I have been told by one of the veterans that received a lap blanket that he liked the yarn because it keeps his legs warm and he really like the colors.

This yarn is of high quality and beautiful colors. I know I will enjoy working with it.

I love this yarn! It is slightly thinner than some other cotton yarns but for the projects that I make, it doesn’t make a difference. I use it for washcloths and soap saver pouches for charity programs.

I also find that, for an equivalent weight, this yarn has more yardage. It also tends to be a lower price than the other brands. So, at a lower price, you get more yardage. It’s a “win,win” for my charity projects.

I purchased 2 skeins of this yarn for an item for that someone ordered for me to crochet. She was looking for a particular color and this was the only one in cotton in my local store that was appropriate.

It is difficult to work with, splits on almost every stitch! If I hadn’t already agreed to make it, I would actually just throw it away! It’s cheap but not worth the frustration!.

I was looking for a soft cotton yarn that was easy to work with (without much stretch) to make a bedspread for my new bedroom. This Premier Home is exactly what I was looking for! It is soft and doesn’t separate easily like some cotton yarns do.

While the picture is Kelly green and the label on the yarn says Kelly green it is more of a dark forest green. I’ve waisted money and now can’t start my project which needed an actual Kelly green color not forest green.

I don’t think I like Vanna’s choice. She needs her eyeballs checked. Cause that’s not Kelly Green. The seller was fine, but obviously changed the color in the photos.

I bought this because my daughter is sensitive to rough textures and the other reviews were saying it was soft and easy to work with. I made my daughter a scarf. As I was making it I messed up and unraveled to remake, it is easy to use, but it is scratchy to the point that my index fingers and thumbs have several cuts on them from holding the yarn to guide it as I go during crocheting.

My daughter wrapped the scarf around her and the first thing she said was “It is pretty, but it’s too rough to put against my neck so I’ll probably drape it around my shoulders and only use it wherever I am already covered up because there’s no way I’m letting this touch my skin again.

” I haven’t washed it yet, maybe it softens after wash?.

I love Vanna’s Choice. The colors are so bright and inviting to wear or use in a special project. I made a sweater for my grand daughter when she was in Kindergarden, first grade , second grade and third grade.

I still have them and she is 18 years old now. She won’t part with her sweaters.

I love the way this yarn looks and feels. Very lightweight, soft, and vibrant, but not overpoweringly neon. One problem was that the fluff is easily pulled off as I’m pulling the yarn through stitches while crocheting.

It took a while to get used to, but when I was figuring out how tight I should make each stitch and experimenting with different hooks, I found that restarting or constantly pulling the yarn back made the yarn shed.

Sometimes, the yarn shed so much that I was left with just string and had to cut it off and start at a fluffier part of the yarn. By the end of my project, there were bits of fluff scattered on my floor.

Another problem I encountered is how the yarn looks with certain projects. Because the yarn was a little difficult to pull through some stitches, the finished product had some loose yarn sticking out that just didn’t look good.

Changing the tightness of the stitches was also a hassle because of how difficult it was to grasp the yarn without tearing the fluff off. This could just be a user problem considering I haven’t been crocheting for very long, but this is just something I’ve noticed while crocheting, so if you want to make a larger project, I suggest practicing making patches of different stitches first.

Overall, I think this yarn looks and feels great. I will continue to purchase this yarn because it is affordable and isn’t too terrible to work with. The shedding is bearable, but the tightness of the stitches is something I will need to work on as a crocheter.

This yarn seems wonderful at first, big, bulky and soft. However, as others have mentioned, it sheds like crazy, and that’s not the worst part. it falls apart anywhere you cut it. You are just left with the thin little strings because the fluff falls off.

Heaven forbid you have to unravel and rework something because you have big gaps where the fluff came off. But the worst part, I just made a baby blanket and all of a sudden in the middle of the skein, the yarn got really thin.

I wasn’t sure what to do, so I just kept going, but it lasted for 2 or 3 yards. I thought maybe it wouldn’t show, but it does, and looks so bad where suddenly in the middle of the blanket its very thin with actual holes in some spots.

I tried to get online and write to the manufacturer, but cant find any contact information. I’m in a panic because I need the blanket for a baby blessing in a few days, and I can’t even find the yarn now, it’s out of stock locally and looks like it’s been discontinued.

This is so frustrating and annoying. Especially not to have anyone to stand behind this Michaels brand of yarn that they say is guaranteed.

I used this yarn to crochet a monokini for my aunt as a bridal shower gift. The end result ended up looking really good, and she loved it! The yarn was a little bit splity, but I think that’s pretty normal for cotton yarn.

I really liked using it. It was pretty soft and didn’t have any major problems. I also really like the way that it was packaged. Ask the yarn is wrapped and this cardboard tube in the middle so you never have to deal with trying to untangle knots.

Honestly that’s probably my favorite part.

Love love love the color. Love the feel and weight of this yarn. If you plan to use this as a washcloth yarn, I don’t find it as absorbent as regular cotton yarns (I like a unique and beautiful cloth in the kitchen).

But, I’d certainly buy it for something gorgeous, like an afghan or a sweater.

I love how this yarn feels and drapes. My only issue with it is it does tend to split, but nothing too bad. I have crocheted a sweater for my niece with the coral color, and am making one for my sister in succulent.

I bought 3 balls of Catona 25 Gram for an amigurumi for my son. Two would have been enough. Even though these are probably the smallest balls of cotton yarn I’ve ever bought, they are perfectly sized for small projects, I used less than half a ball of the blue for this amigurumi.

Working with the yarn was a breeze, no issues with with the ply separating, which can happen with other yarn when working high tension crochet. Love the availability of colors and the fact that I do not have a ginormous amount of left-over yarn taking up space in my yarn drawer.

I’ve used Caron Simply Soft for a few projects now and there are pros and cons. First, it’s a very soft yarn, comes in a wide variety of colors, and has a nice sheen and elasticity to it. However, the big con is that it isn’t woven very well and therefore unravels quite easily.

Furthermore, it varies in thickness along the strand of yarn, i. e. , in some places it’s nice and thick and in other places it’s extremely thin, and this is within the same skein. That I could live with, but it’s the unraveling that is its literal undoing, for me.

Crocheting hats and scarves are one thing, but I’m making my first afghan with this yarn as a gift, and I’m seriously concerned with its durability. There are so many unwoven fibers sticking out and no amount of trying to re-twist the strands of fiber helps.

Dropping stitches, as sometimes happens, is also problematic because you often have to frog several stitches just to pick up a twisted area. Because of this problem, there are strands of fiber sticking out from several stitches, and no amount of trying to tighten them works.

For this reason, I cannot give this yarn a good grade, and I cannot recommend it for blankets, etc. It’s a shame, because otherwise, this yarn has many good qualities (color choices, sheen) but it’s poor quality in terms of construction makes it just too difficult to work with on most projects.

This is my first, and last, time using Caron Simply Soft. I wanted to try it, as I know some folks love it and sadly bought enough for a queen size blanket. This is the worst yarn I’ve ever used! It splits horribly and there’s absolutely no consistency in size.

It’s supposed to be worsted weight but it get so thin in places, its thinner than baby weight and I’m other places it’s thicker than bulky weight. There are huge slubs in the yarn that I’ve had to cut out and have found at least one skein (so far), that’s entirely unusable! Is there no quality control at all?? I don’t even want to finish the blanket that I was so excited to make.

I dread even picking the project up to work on it and when I do, the stitches are so uneven, it’s just sickening. Never, never again!.

I made a lovely sweater for my Granddaughter’s 5th birthday in November. It is the first sweater that I have crocheted and I was scared. Didn’t need to be afraid using this CARON SIMPLY SOFT yarn because the yarn was consistent in size and was of great quality! I purchased white to make wide stripes with some green CARON SINPLY SOFT yarn that was a gift to me.

The white made a lovely contrast with the green and made the green more alive for a small child. I was very impressed with how soft the sweater will be against her skin and the warmth it will provide no matter how cold and snowy it gets this winter! I am so impressed with how my sweater turned out that I intend to make a sweater for myself to help me keep warm this winter and I have never made any clothing for myself before!.

I haven’t actually completed a project yet (I’ve just made a gauge square), but for the price, this is pretty good so far. A little splitty, but it is cotton yarn after all. Seemed to respond well to blocking.

I bought it with the intention of using it for a practice run of a knit top, but based on the blocking, I think the quality will be good enough to give the finished piece to my sister.

I love the look and feel of cotton crochet for summer wraps and tops but it can be uncomfortable to crochet with 100% cotton. I would find myself yanking and tugging on some stitches to get the hook through the rather dry texture of the yarn.

When I tried Cotton Fair I was very happy to find that the cotton and acrylic blended yarn felt softer than 100% cotton and was a pleasure to work with. My pattern was designed for a #4 yarn and a J hook.

Cotton Fair is a #2 yarn, so I just used 2 strands together with a J hook and it was just right. I got the crispness of cotton that I wanted in the look of the finished wrap, without the tugging and pulling.

What a difference the right blend can make!.

I bought 4 skeins of the neon pink about a year ago simply based off the beauty of the color. I hadn’t touched it for months, never having had anything to make with it until a friend found out she was having a baby girl.

She didn’t want a blanket that was solely a classic pink. she wanted one that had a major pop of pink that made the blanket special to her daughter even in her pre-teen years. One that would also stand the test of time.

So, I grabbed a few more skeins of the neon pink as well as a few baby pink and snow white. I got started on the blanket and just fell in love. The yarn is so easy to work with and the anti-pilling feature of it is actually true.

Usually I have to be so careful about how the blanket sits when I crochet, but with this yarn, I was less worried about that which made just relaxing and actually making the blanket a joy. I have since bought about 30 skeins of various colors for hats, scarves and recently I bought the colors glass, azure and lagoon for a mermaid blanket for another friend’s daughter.

I adore how well it worked up.

I started using this yarn a couple of years ago and it washes so nicely. It looks brand new after many washings. The only negative is that many of the yarns have a knot in the middle of the skein. It would also be nice if they offered skeins up to 400 or more yards for blankets.

This is the only acrylic yarn I will buy because it washes so well but I ended up using a different yarn with more yardage to knit projects that use up to 2100 yards. This yarn is only 208 yards and it would take 10-12 skeins to finish the blanket so I switched to a wool and only needed 4 skeins.

The color of the yarn is excellent. I gave this three stars because there seems to be less wool content and more acrylic and nylon, which makes knitting a garment a bit more difficult, especially a purl stitch knit front and back.

It really aggravates the tendonitis in my thumb because of the lack of looseness that a wool yarn would give me. For this reason, I do not plan on purchasing any more of this particular yarn content.

Love the Berroco Vintage Colors yarn I recently ordered to finish a project & loved the ad hoc coupon for free shipping that popped up while I was ordering. Berroco made it hard to find the colorway I needed, though, because they apparently changed color number 5214 from ‘Old Jeans’ to ‘Kiwi’ or visa versa.

Thank goodness Alpaca Direct had all the info I needed to figure out the change & order the color I wanted. Trouble is that even though this is a variegated colorway, the dye lots have changed dramatically.

When the two hanks I ordered from Alpaca Direct weren’t a great match, I found someone on Ravelry with a dye lot that was just two digits off from the one I was using for my cardigan. The owner of the yarn was kind enough to sell it to me, but it was dyed more like my recent online purchase than the dye lot I originally bought.

I am astounded that Berroco changed the color so dramatically & used the same color number to apply to two vastly different colors. That’s a complaint against Berroco, not Alpaca Direct. And the bottom line is, I love the yarn regardless.

The yarn is beautiful, but Alpaca Direct is worth raving over! I had purchased 6 skeins in December when it went on sale. When I found a pattern I wanted to make, it required 2 more skeins. I ordered them from Alpaca Direct.

and asked in the note if they could match the dye lot. When I received the 2 skeins, both were the same dye lot as my first order! Thank you!.

I didn’t buy this yarn on this site because I didn’t know about yarn. com (and their fabulous WEBS discount) at the time of purchase, but this is the most disappointing yarn I’ve ever used (and I’ve done a lot of knitting).

I bought this to make a sweater for someone for Christmas because they requested this type of yarn. For a sweater that cost maybe 4 times what I normally pay for yarn, I now have a sweater that looks ready for the thrift shop before it’s even worn.

There are fibers like straw that I had to pull out as I was knitting, the finished sweater is nappy all over and already pilling. It looks worn and tired, I am so disappointed. I will never, ever knit anything again with this yarn, I don’t even want to keep the leftover barely used ball that I have left to make a hat.

I am sooo very disappointed in this yarn! I have felted MANY purses, bags, bowls and know what to look for in yarn. This did not say it’s super-washed although its soft. I used a Size 15 needles as suggested on the cover.

I felted this purse in my agitator washing machine with 2 towels for 4 cycles. Added boiling hot water from the beginning and nothing! Added a pair of jeans which did bleed a little into my cream yarn but at that point what did I have to lose.

Absolutely no felting whatsoever. I am calling the company tomorrow to get my $$ back and return the other skeins I bought.

This was my first time purchasing Big Wool from Rowan, and my first yarn ever from Rowan! I was looking for a more cost effective alternative to Crazy Sexy Wool, and I have to say, I am SO in love with Big Wool! It has lovely volume, knits up lovely, and doesn’t pill up in the process of knitting.

While I do love the over-the-top squish and voluminous effect of a single-ply super bulky, I have been shocked by just how much I LOVE this 3-ply Big Wool! It is also very lightweight for a super bulky, which I really love.

I would absolutely purchase Big Wool again, and based off this experience look forward to purchasing different types of yarn from Rowan.

I’m a wool snob but I really like this yarn. I’ve never worked with chain construction yarn before, but I’m really liking it. Doesn’t split, behaves well if you have to rip out. About 1 to 2 slubs per skein.

My mother-in-law picked out the yarn for a sweater I’m knitting for her. The varigated colors are working very nicely with the strong vertical nature of the pattern (Noro Birdseye slip stitch pattern).

Might have to make one for me!.

This is the softest yarn that I have ever knit with! I am a fan of yarns that are a cotton merino blend. The wool gives it warmth while the cotton gives it the softness against your skin. The color variations of this yarn give your garment a unique look which you usually only get from hand dyed yarns.

I really love this yarn and have used it for several projects, however if you are someone who pulls out work a lot, this may not be the best choice.

I really like this yarn, however, there are some things to remember if you are going to try it. The little loops in the yarn make it difficult to see where your needle needs to go. Use needles that are large enough so that the knit is on the loose side.

Forget about pulling out yarn if you made a mistake and want to go back. Simple ss gives a wonderful look, so easy knitting, but likely too challenging for beginning knitters.

I love these yarns together. Things knit up really quickly, especially this generously sized “Bachi Ball Shawl”. People love them. My most recent one is in the colorway #7 Ueeda, purples, greens, and browns.

Totally gorgeous and soft! I’d say the Margaux red is purple, but luckily my little boy loves that colour so it’ll do just fine. I thought it might be burgundy kind of colour but it’s not. Feels really light, a treat to knit with.

I really enjoyed knitting with this fun looking and super soft yarn. Good quality as one would expect of this price level. The super chunky weight also made it very quick for me to complete a basic jumper.

Can’t wait to try out another Funfetti colour!.

Oh my! I love this wool. This is the first time I have used it, but it is so soft and knits up really quickly and lovely. I’m making a shawl with it. Needs more patterns for this yarn. I want to knit with it all the time now!! x x.

The way the wool is wound is unhelpful. The easy start label means you are supposed to take the wool from the inside. It doesn’t work and the wool gets in a tangle and takes ages to sort. If it is started in the usual wat, from the outside, it works much better.
