20 Best Yarn For Scarves Crochet (2023 Updated)

Bought a large order for a big project and 20% of my order had knots where Lion Brand had tied two strands to make a complete skein. They didn’t even try to match up the color so that color graduation was consistent, so your project ends up with an abrupt change in color instead of the graduation from one shade to the next.

This is unacceptable quality for a yarn whose selling point is the color graduation. Shame on Lion Brand for taking short cuts over providing a good product to keep their customers happy and coming back.

So disappointed because I fell in love with this yarn when I first saw it, but I probably won’t buy it again.

I’ve used this yarn several times in a few colors because I find it so interesting when it works up. Every skein has places where it is thicker and thinner which is very frustrating but in about half the skeins I have used that is the only problem and one which I am willing to overlook.

However, in the other half of the skeins I’ve used there have been breaks and knots and places where the yarn is so frayed as to look like the fiber had never been spun into yarn at all. It is also very difficult to undo work when I realize I have made a mistake because the yarn catches on itself somehow, never ceasing to amaze me with how vexing it can be.

I only keep buying it because the payoff is so wonderful – projects worked from this yarn are so soft and warm and interesting to look at. I made a super scarf from this yarn in black/ turquoise that wearing made me forget how annoying it had been to make (which, I suppose, is why I purchased it again.

And again. ) I give three stars because of the inconsistency between skeins, even of the same color. Some skeins I would rate at less than a star, but some deserve at least 4. I responded that I would in recommend this product and it is true – I would recommend Scarfie yarn, but only to those with the most patience, and to those who believe that the soft and warm ends justify the frayed, knotted means.

I’ve purchased this yarn several times in several different colors. It’s definitely one of my all-time favorite yarns. It is so easy to work with. The hook just glides smoothly through it without splitting or snagging and it is so soft to the touch.

Not too thick and not too thin, just perfect for garments. Even though it’s called scarfie I have made all kinds of different things, not just scarves. I’ll be using this yarn as long as they continue to make it.

The colors offered make this a year-round good choice. There are colors for spring, colors for winter and everything in between. Definitely a good quality product reasonably priced.

Will never purchase this yarn again. Available in nice range of colors. Purchased 8 different ones to use for a crochet along practice. In over 50 years of knitting and crocheting, this is the worst yarn I have ever used.

There is much variation from skein to skein or perhaps by color. Biggest problem is the yarn splits terribly. This is well documented on other sites on the web I wish I had consulted. Thickness of the overall yarn or wraps per inch varied from skein to skein.

At least 1 was considerably thinner than the others. I always rewind my yarn so I don’t have surprises while working. 3 of the skeins had areas of unusable flaws. I did not return yarn because I rewound it and was impatient to meet a deadline.

I frequently buy Caron Simply Soft for a thinner 4 weight yarn that works up nicely for clothing. I frequently use the shinier silkier yarns and I love them and have never had a problem with them at all.

I bought Robins Egg, a matte light blue and made a beautiful skirt, again. no issues. I bought 2 hot pinks which are also matte and had nothing but problems with the yarn. I am not sure if it was a fluke maybe a machine was messing up durimg these 2 skeins manufacturing so they had some contaminated stock or what.

So the yarn gets very thin in places then builds back up to a huge thick frizzy chunk of yarn that is completely unuseable. I would cut the yarn, rejoin, and continue, to find the same issue again and again.

It happened between 10-15 times in the first skein, in the second one i barely used any yarn out of it but it had already occured twice. I am one who hates to hsve yarn joins in my projects any more than neccessary, so it was super annoying.

However, with how good my past experience is with Caron Simply Soft, I will buy it again. I can say 99% of the time the complaint above is not an issue.

I love this rich yarn. It looks like alpaca and sheep wool mixed together. But it’s only a tiny bit natural fiber. It’s mostly acrylic. The colors of this line are so deep and jewel like. I would love to get every color and make a sweater or shawl in each one.

They remind me of a style that’s regal and vibrant. The thick, wispy fiber combined with deep, lush hues makes this a perfect yarn for cardigans and sweaters for me.

I really love this yarn!!! I wish I could give five stars, however, please beware of knots in the skein. I purchased 8 and 4 of them so far have knots, I balled the next skein and it has a knot as well.

This creates a few imperfections in the work because the color transition is not subtle and trying to hide the knot. I find this more of a challenge than an inconvenience for personal projects, but I won’t be able to use this for items I intend to gift or sale.

I really hope they can quality check better in the future because this is an amazing yarn and feels great to work with.

For the past 11 years I have been knitting Prayer Shawls for the local Hospice patients. I buy all my yarn at the local Michaels store. Presently I am making my 180th shawl. Every 9 or so shawls I make a red, white and blue patriotic design.

We have a number of retired elderly military men in our area and the hospice nurses have let us know that the veterans are very pleased to receive one of these. Originally we were given the instructions for making these shawls but over the years i have created my own designs and stitches and photographed every one.

I keep a scrapbook (two of them now) with a photo, attached samples of the yarn used and the dates started and finished. I keep the patterns in a pouch at the back of each scrapbook. Probably no one except myself will ever look through these books, but at this point in my life, just having turned 84, i expect some day in a home for the elderly, i will enjoy looking back to see what I’ve done to make others’ lives a little happier at the end of theirs.

Planning the design and color choices and options is fun for me. I have two house cats: if either is awake when I’m taking the final photo of a shawl draped over one of the dining room chairs, he or she will hop up onto the shawl, turn and face me and be in the photo.

I always choose Charisma yarn for making scarves. The color choices are exceptional. I made a scarf for my son a few years back with his collegiate colors and he wore it last year to a gathering with his friends and all of his buddies asked for one to be made for them, even his girlfriend.

Their school colors were different and I had no trouble finding the right colors for them. I made four scarves in all last year. My son started grad school and so this year I made him another scarf with Duke colors, blue and white.

The main reason why these scarves are in demand is the texture. So soft and snuggly warm. It feels like the softest, finest wool, but it’s washable. And the yarn is easy to work with. It’s thick so I can work a scarf up in a couple of days (I’m slow at crocheting).

I highly recommend Charisma yarn. Great colors, soft and warm and so easy to work with.

This yarn literally stinks. It’s so bad that I can’t spend more than 20 or 30 minutes knitting it without getting a headache. It’s kind of a burnt plastic stench. It feels soft, and the dark purple color is lovely.

But it has taken me 5 days to get 50% of the way through knitting a hat, in a pattern I’ve used before that usually takes me less than 6 hours. Aside from the smell, I just don’t like knitting with this yarn.

The strands come apart very easily, so I have to really watch my stitches and can’t watch TV or read while knitting. After reading some other reviews, I’m really concerned about fuzziness/pilling after I wash it.

Luckily, I haven’t run into any knots yet (although I’m only partway through my second skein). I won’t buy this brand ever again.

I recently discovered Caron cakes at Michael’s. After watching tutorials from YouTube and reviews, I thought I’d give it a go. Nice quality yarn. Love the colors. It’s great when you are making shawls and blankets and never have worries about changing colors.

Skinny cakes are great for lighter projects like baby blankets, scarfs. So soft! Pricing is good value. But it’s even better with Michael’s coupons and rewards. Thank you Michael’s!.

The colors! Need i say more? Yes, because not only is this yarn beautiful to look at its sooo easy to create with. No yarn splitting, no knots, or crazy sections. Just lovely crafting. Get this! I love this yarn. I purchased 2 balls of what I thought was teal and actually ‘Citadel”, which is cadet blue (?) and black, which is called Night. The yarn stitches up beautifully. great stitch definition to see detail.

I made a cute shoulder strap bag from the black (see photo). I am also creating a dress from a design created by ‘ Bag-O-Day Crochet” for a little girl, making adjustments for an adult (M). With the drape and sheen of the yarn it is beautiful so far.

Completing the yoke, 3. 75 Susan Bates hook, 4 skeins of Citadel and bottom will be Night (black). There were only 4 ‘Night’ skeins in the store and I grabbed them all, so when I need more I hope the lot doesn’t look different.

Cant wait to finish.

It’s hard to find a good red which isn’t leaning towards orange. This is a good red. This yarn is great for it’s long-fiber no-pill no shed qualities, and the real test of that is using for weaving. If you warp an inkle loom with kitchen cotton to make a guitar strap, your heddles will end up destroyed by the shedding fibers, but this yarn does not do that.

It is a good yarn for weaving, and weaving is one of the best stress-tests for fiber-shedding. That being said this is an extremely soft and cotton with a drapey hand which makes crochet work more delicate and knitted work with great stitch definition and a fluid, swingy movement.

The beautiful sheen on this yarn gives an attractive finish to any item, and I find it particularly suited to crochet table mats, which look stunning against a polished dark wood surface. Patons Grace Yarn is also softer than regular cotton, making it ideal for baby bonnets and other tiny garments.

And, at 100 percent cotton, it is super-strong and particularly appealing to those who prefer natural fibres.

I ordered the color ‘genie’ and the colors only barely match what is pictured online or what I’ve seen from others who reviewed the same thing. It’s baby pastel teal and 50% medium gray. I didn’t get any black between 4 skeins.

I’m working up my second skein and there’s lots of flecks of gray in the white, making it look dirty. This wasn’t a problem with the first skein. I don’t think the recipient will mind so I’m not stopping but probably won’t buy this again.

I do like the weight of the yarn and haven’t had trouble with bad factory joins like other reviewers. Perhaps at deep discount would consider another colorway, but no one should pay full price for these.

Questioning the quality of lion brand after disappointment with another of their yarns as well.

This is my first time buying the Mandala yarn and I have to say that I am a fan. I’m using it to make a cardigan and the weight works well for a delicate look. It’s not the softest, but is definitely wearable for an acrylic.

I would not recommend ordering from the website, though. I got four skeins and they are from two different die lots so I’ll have to exchange half of the yarns so the project doesn’t look disjointed. Wait for the sales, otherwise it can be a bit on the pricy side for a large project.

Lion brand mandala yarn is my favorite yarn, I have so many and so many colors and there’s still more I want to buy. This yarn is absolutely beautiful they way it transitions from 1 color to the next is absolutely perfect.

I love all the different color choices they offer from pastels to earth tones, to bight colors. It’s perfect for making clothes or blankets. And is beginner friendly, if you haven’t used this yarn id highly recommend you try it.

I wanted to love this, but there are some downsides I found. First, there’s quite a bit of variation in the dye lots of each color way, especially lighter colors. Also, I’ve come across multiple places in the skeins where they joined it with a knot, or where the strand is torn most of the way through.

That’s annoying when it means extra ends to weave in, and with a chunky yarn it’s harder to hide woven ends. The yarn feels pretty soft, but it does get fuzzy pretty quickly, and I don’t know how long it’s going to look nice once my project is complete.

This would work fine for certain projects, but next time I’ll invest in better quality.

I love this yarn and I’m so disappointed that it’s been discontinued. I am 8 skeins short on a blanket.

I started a cardigan but ran out of yarn and have been waiting for 6 minths to find the yard. It is a really great yarn to work with and the color is so beautiful. Please get sime in soon.

I crochet and my mom really wanted some slippers this year for Christmas. Since I usually get so many Christmas gift requests I get started as early as possible during the season. I found a nice pattern for her slippers that used this yarn, but I was skeptical of the fact that it was wool- neither of us like the scratchy feeling that usually comes with wool.

I went to the store and I thought “meh, it’s not too bad” when I felt it, still has a wool feeling, but it’s not like some wool that is very rough to the touch. I figured that after using it it would be softer, and I was right! The color Succulent is one of the colors within Seaglass, which was a pleasant surprise, since quite a few yarns I have used use different tones between skeins with one color and skeins with multiple colors- if you are looking for a pair of colors, I highly recommend those two.

The online picture is very accurate to the actual color of the yarn that I bought in person. The Colors are also not extremely unique, which made it easy to pick other yarns for a matching scarf, hat, and gloves.

The only major con for me is that the skeins are smaller than I’m used to working with, so I only have a yard or two leftover. The three pictures I have included show the similarity between the colors, the yarn as I was working with it, and a finished slipper.

I chose this yarn for an afghan that was to be a gift for a gentleman friend. The bit of tweed in the spiced apple tone was beautiful. This yarn’s soft feel is very comfy for this purpose, however as I knitted I began to notice that the yarn was developing an “almost shaggy look” as though it had been already “used”! I spent a good deal of $$$ and hours of time making this gift.

I made it extra long and a bit wider than normal so that it would be very warm and snuggly. It is definitely warm/snuggly but it’s not going to “look very good” if used a great deal and I worry that it will not represent the love/effort/time/$$$ that was put into it?? I will add that it seems to be a popular yarn as I had to use many sources in order to have enough to complete my project.

(Added cost for shipping from those sources was crazy) I would be interested to hear what others think about this yarn? I would not use it again- my needle arts expertise is in the “advanced range” —my designs are unique and time consuming—this yarn does not match the degree of quality that my work deserves.

I love this yarn! It is perfect for the many many afghans I made and gifted over the years! Last year I made what I call “FOREVER HUGS” for every member of my immediate family (12) as well as extended family (3) and friends (2).

This year my oldest daughter asked me to make one for her father-in-law who had seen, used, and admired hers, and my youngest daughter requested one for her mother-in-law for the same reason. I am currently making one for a great nephew who will graduate high school in the spring (as I have for many graduating family members in the past).

The yearn works up well and quick – wears well, and the afghans can be thrown in the washer and dryer. Perfect! I won’t use any other yarn for my Forever Hugs, PS – let me know if you would like some pictures.

Beautiful colors and great for lightweight shawls in warmer weather. My only issue with the yarn is the unevenness of the thickness, it seems to be a problem in the whole line as I have had multiple skeins with the same thing.

Some points have a decent width and at other points it is down to basically string. Still a good yarn overall but something to watch out for when choosing which pattern you want to use.

Very soft, not scratchy even with the metallic thread. Nice drape even with a using a smaller hook and tighter stitches. Didn’t have any trouble with tangling, just worked from the outside of the ball instead of center pull.

Yarn is delicate though, definitely use extra care with hand washing & lay flat to dry.

This is the 4th Shawl in a Ball purchase I have made over the years. Because the yarn is rather thin, it makes a perfect shawl of the Southern California weather. It’s not too warm for our weather. I have sold 3 of the shawls that I have made.

This yarn is very pretty, Beautiful colors, and feels wonderful. I am using it for a sweater. Unfortunately it splits horribly and easily. You have to be extremely careful when you’re knitting. I’ve had problems with it and it’s not as enjoyable to knit with Carol M.

I wanted to alert others of the fact that the pattern I received with this kit had an error. I contacted Darn Good Yarn but haven’t received a response yet. I understand this may be an oversight, as I sent them the message on their Contact Us form, and a previous email about another matter I’d sent was answered the next day.

Anyway, the error I detected had me stumped for a while. While my intuition told me what made sense to do, I persisted with the pattern as written until I’d ripped my work out repeatedly. So, Section 1: Shawl setup, Row 4 of both the digital and paper versions of the pattern I received read, “Sl1, K to CSS, sl 1 wyif, k to last 2 sts, kf+bl, k1.

” It ought to read: Sl1, kfb, k to CSS, sl1 wyif, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. That’s the only way I was able to achieve the stated end result of 79 stiches, with 39 stitches to the right and left of the center slipped stitch.

With that rectified, I have found this pattern to be absolutely lovely to work. I got the kit with the Tidal Pool colorway that’s featured in the picture. It’s beautiful, and the pattern truly brings out the gorgeousness of the yarn; both its weight and hand painted characteristics.

I just want to give props to both the pattern and yarn designers. Thank you for a truly enjoyable experience. The pattern is very aptly named. Please just clarify the pattern instructions.

great price. Great value. The yarn is gorgeous and soft. It feels like knitting with warm air. The colors are inspiring and vibrant when the light outside is dim from winter. It’s a great gift with many applications not just the shawl.

I got the color surge shade and it looks like fire. It’s gorgeous! Knits up great and wears like a dream! I admit that i haven’t tried the pattern but it looks great and like fun. I bought 2 kits, so, I’ll be busy this season.

The pattern is easy to follow and creates a beautiful garment; however, I did not use yarn provided in the kit to make it. The provided yarn is more difficult to work with as it changes thicknesses and breaks on occasion.

Even when paying close attention to tension, it still looked somewhat uneven. My biggest thing with this kit is that the yarn has a very aggressive floral scent. This is problematic for allergies and skin sensitivities so beware! Fragrances also don’t appear on material labels so you have no idea what your skin is coming into contact with when using this yarn.

Please, darn good yarn, put a disclaimer is scent is going to be used!.

wonderful yarn in great range of colours. one cake is enough for a sleeveless top in crochet or knitting.

Man muss gut aufpassen, dass man alle vier Fäden erwischt. Helfen kann hier ein Perle, die auf das Garn aufgezogen wird. Beim Verarbeiten sollte man eine Schale oder einen Beutel zur Aufbewahrung nutzen, damit der Bobbel auch bis zum Ende steht.

Sollte doch mal geribbelt werden müssen, unbedingt auf ein Holz oder einen Pappkern wickeln, da sich sich sonst das geribbelte Garn zu einem großen Wollknoten verwandeln kann.
