Yarn is a material that is used for various textile crafts, including knitting, crochet, and weaving. It is typically made from natural or synthetic fibers, which are twisted together to form a strand.
Yarn is available in a wide range of colors, textures, and weights, which makes it a versatile material for crafting.
When it comes to knitting scarves, yarn choice is important as you want a material that is comfortable to wear and will keep you warm. Wool yarn is a popular option for scarves as it is insulating and can be easily dyed in a wide range of colors.
However, other fibers such as acrylic and cotton can also be used. It really depends on your personal preference.
Once you have selected your yarn, you will need to choose the right size needles. Again, this will depend on the type of yarn you are using as well as your personal knitting style. Generally speaking, thicker yarns will require larger needles while thinner yarns can be knit with smaller needles.
When it comes to scarf length, there are no hard and fast rules. It really depends on how long you want your scarf to be. However, most scarves are typically between four and six feet in length.
Once you have all of your supplies, you are ready to start knitting your scarf! There are a variety of scarf patterns available online and in knitting books. Find a pattern that you like and that matches your skill level.
Then, follow the instructions to knit your scarf.
If you are a beginner knitter, don’t be discouraged if your scarf doesn’t turn out perfectly. Knitting is a skill that takes time and practice to master. Keep at it and you’ll be knitting beautiful scarves in no time!.

Just one ball of our soft and lofty wool blend yarn Scarfie is all you need to knit or crochet a full-length scarf.
The ombré pattern is a sophisticated and tonal blend of solid and heathered hues.
Scarfie is a soft and lofty wool blend yarn with enough yardage to knit or crochet a full length scarf. While working with Scarfie, you’ll see a unique self-striping ombré effect emerge, with gradual shading from one color to the next.
The ombré pattern is a sophisticated and tonal blend of solid and heathered hues. Scarfie is great for stylish garments, accessories and afghans.
I love the subtle soft color transition of this yarn and I appreciate the bit of wool blend and the relatively large yardage skeins. I would, however, like to make an important suggestion to anyone making the featured Boyfriend Sweater or any other garment related project.
The knitter should try to start the corresponding (right and left front, sleeves, etc) at, or as close to, the same color point in the transition as possible. So that the sweater looks balanced. With the large yardage skeins this should easily be possible.
Love this yarn and look forward to completing this project. Thanks Lion Brand for your great, affordable and dependable products.
Caron Simply Soft yarn is one of the most popular versatile worsted weight yarns. Incredibly soft to the touch this yarn is perfect from a variety of projects from baby to fashion to home décor. Simply Soft comes in an extensive array of colors from neutrals to pastels and brights as well as vibrant neons – the perfect shade for every project! With a unique sheen this yarn works up with a fabulous lustrous look with a beautiful drape.
Conveniently machine washable and dryable for easy care.
The yarn is incredibly soft and makes for a great mottled look in your finished project. Two things to keep in mind when choosing/using this yarn: (1) This yarn will tend to split easily. This is likely due to the manufacturing process that makes the yarn soft and beautiful variegated but also makes the yarn very slick and the plies difficult to hold together.
Just slow down a little while working the stitches, and this yarn will work up beautifully for you. (2) Go shopping for this yarn in the store in person, if possible, for the sake of making sure the skeins are the color you want/are imagining.
I have also seen complaints in the more recent reviews about people receiving differing dye lots for large orders online. There is no guarantee when ordering more than one or two skeins of yarn that Joanns will be able to select ones from the same lot.
Further, because this is acrylic yarn, the color difference between skeins from two different lots is often nonexistent. In my personal experience with this line of yarns, you can usually get away with using skeins with from two different lots in a large project.

I bought several skeins of this to work on projects for family. One being a shawl and the other a cardigan. I can’t say I’m too happy with it. I’ve never had such trouble from any brand of yarn, save one, before.
It tangles easily, unravels horribly, and is the most frustrating in terms of fibers. Because of tangles due to how poorly it unravels from the inside (every skein was the same) I decided to unravel and roll into a ball.
While doing this, my entire front became engulfed in a storm of tickly fibers. I had fibers in my eyes, in my nose, my mouth, and my shirt. I bought this yarn based on the glowing reviews, but never again.
Great value, even more so with a coupon or if it’s on sale. But even without, you get a lot of yarn for the price. It’s on the thicker side for a worsted weight yarn and pretty soft for a value yarn.
I found the quality to be great, I crocheted a cardigan using two skeins and had plenty of yarn left over (more than half the skein). It’s not scratchy or itchy at all and feels very solid. Would recommend for fall or winter weather wearables and blankets.
I bought three skeins and one of them had one knot, the rest had no knots which I thought was impressive for this much yarn.
I have used this yarn for many many years to crochet Afghans. It was the perfect weight and so easy to work with. Now, it has been changed. I was working on an Afghan and got a new skein of yarn to finish it.
It was like crocheting with a totally different yarn. It was not as heavy and I could tell the difference immediately. I couldn’t use it. Luckily for me I had another skein that must have been processed earlier.
If this is what this yarn is going to be like now, quality wise, I’ll never buy again. I’m heartbroken. This was one thing I could count on.
Take a quiet moment to release your creativity with thisCaron Simply Soft Party Yarn. Featuring a tone-on-tone sparkle, it is everything that you love about the product. This acrylic yarn comes with a hint of metallic, so it is shiny, and still supremely pleasant to the touch.
Use it to add some beauty to garments and accessories. This Caron Simply Soft yarn is machine washable and dryable. Make some scarves, booties, hats and more for family members. It is available in a wide variety of beautiful colors.
made several infinity scarfs with the caron silver party and they are so soft and squishy after being washed and dried and the metallic thread changes colors throughout the scarf sparkling under most light sources.
im going to make a cardigan next. as for recommending to a friend every one who sees one of the scarves i says something making it kinda hard to get my shopping done.
Looking for a yarn with a subtle sparkle for knitting or crocheting winter holiday accessories? I use this ultra-soft, worsted weight, acrylic/polyester yarn for knitting holiday chemo hats for women and children at my local medical center.
The color selection is great for Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, or Kwanza. This yarn knits beautifully (see photo) in spite of the metallic-looking polyester strand trying to separate from the acrylic strand at times.
Since I have never kept a hat for myself, I don’t know how well the yarn holds up to washing. I put the fiber content and “hand wash, air dry” on my gift tags. After 5 years, no negative feedback.
I cannot knit, so my review is based on my crochet experiences. Up until recently, I’d always used Red Heart’s “Shimmer,” purchased @ Walmart. When it wasn’t available recently, I got “Simply Soft Party.
” I’ve used and liked Caron “Simply Soft” in the past, so I was happy to discover this addition to the line. “Party” is fun and easy to use. I chose a “J” hook (versus the recommeded “H”), and I would recommend using plastic instead of metal, as the yarn will split if one is not careful.
I have only made scarves, so the occasional split was easily corrected, and splitting rarely occurred when I switched to a plastic hook. I will still use the Red Heart “Shimmer” in future, but have added “Party” to my stash as well.
It has a different sparkle than “Shimmer,” and I plan to do a project using both yarns. I also consider “Party” good value for money, especially when purchased @ Walmart. I believe it is a yarn that a beginner could use without problem, as it is stretchy and flexible and very smooth on the hook.
Yarn is perhaps the most essential component of knitting and crochetingso how do you know which one is right for your special project. The fibre content of the yarn that’s right for your project will likely be determined by its end use.
Wool and silk yarns are great for warmththink sweaters, scarves and blankets. Use cotton yarns for durabilitygreat for fashion accessories, window treatments, and home dcor accents. A good rule of thumb is the more ornate the yarn, the simpler your projects pattern or shape should be.
Novelty yarns like boucle, marled, or variegated are perfect for shawls and blankets whereas more classic, plain varieties like smooth plied yarn are great for more stitching techniques. Categorised by the thickness of the thread, yarn weights range from 0 to 7 or lace to jumbo.
Use lighter weights (0-2) for socks and delicate baby apparel. Medium weights (3-4) are great for sweaters, scarves and light outerwear. Heavier weights (5-7) for best suited for blankets and rugs.
A soft yarn for fabulous resilient knit and crochet apparel and accessories. Gorgeous color palette. Great range of stepping shades, perfect for home decor as well as garments. Lovely shades that highlight the latest trends: rich and modern.
A favorite for felting. Weight category: 4, 3. 5oz/100g, 210yd, 100% wool. Dyelotted. Suggested knitting needles: 7/4. 5mm, crochet hook 7/4. 5mm. Care: Hand wash, dry flat, do not bleach, do not iron, dry cleanable.
I would think twice about using their yarn again. I’ve used it for many years but this time was unforgivable. first, the yarn was cut after 4-5 feet. I needed to join them. Second, there were little knots here and there.
again, I need to open them and join the yarn. The only reason I did not return them was that I had started my project with this yarn, that I had in my stash, and I did not want to abandon it. so, I am sucking it up and continuing.
the yARN ITSELF IS BEAUTIFUL. I know my project will be beautiful is spite of this Paton’s lack of quality control.
Scarfie in an unparalleled yarn designed to create an effortless bi-color self-striping ombre effect in a sophisticated palette. Constructed of a premium acrylic wool blend, it maintains an extremely soft hand and knits and crochets up easily.
One ball makes a scarf! This multipack contains three balls of yarn. Weight Category: 5. Content: 78% acrylic/22% wool. Putup: 5. 3 oz/150g. , 312 yards/285m. Gauge: 14sx20r= 4in/10cm on size US9/5. 5 mm knitting needles.
Very soft, too soft. Does not hold it’s shape, “ladders” badly. It is not bulky weight, only as thick as worsted and most of that is fuzz. It is also twisted- yarn coils, loops and tangles as you use it.
It is dyed so far apart that there is no striped effect. If you knit a sock, it will be about two colors and they will not match. Very disappointing performance and I will avoid anything Lion Brand from now on.
I used to love this yarn, but I’m terribly disappointed with the quality lately. If my last 3 skeins, 2 had knots where the new color didn’t match the old. This completely ruins the ombre effect! And you may have already spent a bunch of time working the project before you get to the knot.
This makes me hesitant to buy yarn from this manufacturer in the future.

At church we make a blanket for each graduating senior high student as they transition off to college. We give these to let each person know that they go with our prayers, thoughts and to remind them that no matter how far or near, they are always a part of our church family.
In the past we used another brand yarn. Most of us did not enjoy working with that yarn and discovered it didn’t hold up as well as expected. This yarn is truly soft on the hands. It washes and dries so well.
It retains it’s shape and color. Great yardage. I’ve come across just one split strand in 6 skeins. Hardly an issue. Highly recommend this yarn for any project requiring acrylic. My 4 stars instead of 5 is only because it is not a merino wool.
so, for an acrylic, it is perfect. the best of all acrylics. Kudos to Premiere and Deborah Norville!.
The red heart soft yarn is very nice. But paying almost 6 dollars a skein is a bit ridiculous. Navy is a very popular color and I took the last three. There hasn’t been any in stock for weeks. Disappointed in your sales and the variety of Yarn ‘s.
Sad to see AC Moore go because they carried a much better selection. I had to go first to AC Moore, Joannes, Michaels hoping I would get anything that I need it. Now AC Moore is gone and hobby lobby is a new store in my area.
It’s kind of pathetic that you can’t find everything in one place. And it’s even more annoying now that Michaels does not honor other coupons besides their own. And a lot of things you can find online but they’re not at my local Michaels which is 20 miles away.
I purchased 4 skeins of this yarn for crochet projects. The colors were rich and beautiful. I normally purchase my yarn from another crafting retailer. However, with sale and discounts I decided to give Michael’s a try and buy this yarn.
MISTAKE! When I began working with this yarn, using the 5. 5 mm hook as suggested, I immediately found the threads separating. Pushed my way through two rows. The third row is nearly impossible to work as the threads are separating so badly.
After months of knitting a huge cabled afghan for my granddaughter for a wedding gift, I just now noticed a difference in color when I switched to a new skein. About half of the afghan is one shade, 1/4 is another shade, and 1/4 is another shade.
I’m just sick. It’s a subtle difference and I guess that’s why I’m just now noticing it, but in the right light it’s extremely noticeable. I would never give this to someone as a wedding gift. Such a shame.
I liked the yarn, but never again for anything other than a one skein project.
Topaz by Berroco is a loosely spun, multi-colored yarn. This worsted weight yarn is ideal for pullovers and scarves. The thick/thin variation will keep your projects interesting!
I am currently knitting the Liva pattern designed by Amy Christoffers which calls for Berroco Topaz yarn. The yarn is lovely, very soft, and with long color changes. I am a bit concerned about whether the yarn will “bloom” and pill with repeated wearing of the sweater.
Still, I highly recommend the yarn. It would also knit comfortable, warm hats, scarves, and wraps.
Very soft yarn and love the colors. I am making the Livia sweater. The reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the tends to break easier and sheds. I am hoping that it does not pill a lot because while knitting it seems to create fuzz balls.
using it in an afghan- yarn is beautiful and soft…biggest issue is the varying thickness. Parts of the strand very thin and others very fluffy but if you pull on them the yarn breaks
Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran – A soft and supple yarn made of 100% merino wool. Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran has a robust plied look for a sturdy effect and gives your projects a natural look.
The thread feels comfotable and is perfect for knitting and crocheting clothes and accessories like sweaters, cardigans, wraps and scarves. Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran is also used for making the most beautiful needle punching projects from the magazine Rico Punch Needle no.
The dark normally teaches us to appreciate the light – not to mention clear and strong colors. Give a little room in the dark to see these great bright colors of SultanShadow unfold. All the variations in the Shadow series have a foundation in deep black, which the colors then slowly grow from.
The dark bottom gives the clear colors extra power and makes them seemingly shine and catch the eye. Cotton Kings SultanShadow is a lovely soft cake yarn in 100% cotton, which is loved and admired for its beautiful color changes.
The quality results from 4 thin threads that are not twined together, which makes it extra soft and airy. The colors in SultanShadow change slowly, by only 1 thread at a time, which makes for a fantastically beautiful transition of colors.
It makes it extra exciting to knit and crochet with because one gets to see how the colors meet when your creative project unfolds. It takes about 1 skein to make a shawl/scarf. Tip: before using the SultanShadow skein, run the 4 threads through a bead so the threads are gathered throughout the work.
TranslateShow in original languageSehr angenehme Baumwolle.
King Cole Big Value Chunky is a stylish, high quality yarn with a soft halo. It’s perfect for cosy crochet scarves, jumpers and gifts that are durable and look great. Work up your favourite chunky patterns in a huge variety of colours from soft neutrals to fun pinks in solid or flecked tweeds.
My Mum recommended this wool to me and she was a fantastic knitter for 75+ years. She really knew about wool, from fleece to garment. She spun, dyed and knitted our jumpers, gloves, socks &tc. when we were young then for her grandchildren.
She knitted toys and Nativity figures which were sold in places like Hong Kong and New York as well as Uk. Her little people/animals could almost breath by themselves they are that good. This wool seems expensive for a ‘bog standard’ knitting wool for every day jumpers, but in my (short) experience as a knitter for my family, I have found that of all the 100% wools I have used and I won’t use synthetic ‘wool’, this is the best by far.
It feels gorgeous while using and when knitted up, it has a good weight and the wool doesn’t bobble as much as the wools made with a shorter staple & it washes well. This Merino blend is basically a gorgeous wool, not many, if any knots in the yarn either and the colours are solid and haven’t faded yet from many washes.
Brilliant yarn! Knits up easily and well. Have used it so many times and will again. Good price especially when you need multiple balls. Divine colours. It’s a winner!
Soft yarn, good stitch definition, good to knit with as it doesn’t split easily. Good range of colours. Washes well. Value for money. Recommend and would buy again.
A fabulous pure new wool merino blend, Schoppel Wolle Lace Ball 100, is a superb choice for those heirloom knits you’ll want to pass on! Shawls, stoles and scarves galore and fine knits too! Each multicoloured ball contains 100g of yarn (875 yds), in colourways that range from the sublime to the simply outrageous.
This is currently my go-to favorite sock yarn. I’ve purchased several balls in various colorways. It works up in a long, beautiful color change. It looks amazing knit as is or striped using two different balls/both ends of one ball.
This yarn is a little on the thinner side of sock yarn and makes a nice dress sock. So far I have NOT had an issue with breaks or unintentional color changes mid-ball. In fact I have not found a knot in the skeins I’ve worked with.
This yarn does not frog particularly well. You can frog a few times, but by the 3rd time or so it starts splitting and fuzzing.
Who says F is a bad grade? My yarn came so quickly, I wasn’t even expecting it. F for Fast!! Their website was very enjoyable. F for Fun!! And the yarn I ordered was packaged wonderfully, and soooo luscious! F for fabulous! There you have it.
I bought a skein of this yarn to make a welted cowl from a pattern on this site. The cowl project was easy and produced a good-looking piece, but the skein of the gradient yarn left it short by about 7 rows.
I knit evenly and according to gauge and so was disappointed. The colors were beautiful; the texture not as soft as I would have preferred.
Soft, luscious 100% baby alpaca in a wide range of colors: Juniper Moon Farm’s Herriot yarn is a wonder! This cozy 4-ply yarn has a slight halo and varies between a light worsted weight and a DK, so you’ll want to make sure to swatch before knitting or crocheting your project.
Imagine heavenly soft sweaters with elegant drape and warm berets and scarves. Herriot’s earthtone or gently heathered colorways are very of the moment and will be endlessly fun to combine in stripes, patterns and colorwork.
I was delighted to find this particular skein of yarn available. I had bought the lovely baby alpaca from a local yarn shop that was going out of business and found myself one skein short to finish my project.
Thank you so much! Packaging and shipping were perfect.
I have seen these magazines in the craft store, but thought they were probably filled with patterns I would never consider. I thought I might actually want to make one item – as is the case with most of the knitting and crochet magazines.
Boy was I wrong. I do believe there is not one single bad pattern. I recommend this to anyone who would like a lovely selection of shawls and wraps. I will not pass this one up in the craft store anymore! One suggestion.
It would be absolutely perfect if there were WRITTEN and Charted directions for each pattern. There are still many of us who cannot follow charted patterns.
Although I paid a premium for a back issue, I am so glad I did. I prefer knitting shawls and wraps, and that was the featured craft. I will seek out new Noro publications because of this purchase. The patterns are relatively simple, although I have been knitting for several years and learned as a teenager.
The fibers produced by Noro are magnificent, although they are too pricey for my use, but I am doing fine with an alternate yarn purchased from Knit Picks.
After you have knit a few rows of your scarf, it is time to bind off the scarf. This will secure the end of your work so that it does not unravel. To bind off, you will need to knit two stitches together.
Then, you will take the stitch that is on the right needle and put it over the stitch on the left needle. You will then knit the next stitch on the left needle and repeat these steps until you have only one stitch left on the needle.
Finally, you will cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull the tail through the last stitch to secure it.
