20 Best Worms For Soil Aeration (2023 Updated)

We live on 5 acres and have a flock of 20 chickens and two cats along with my wife and me. I’ve been taking care of chickens most of my life since I’m 26 and I’m 57 now. I started feeding the grizzly worms bugs to my chickens about two months ago.

I bought two big bags. I’m still on my second bag. I tend to give 32 or three handfuls in the bucket where I mix the scratch in. And I sprinkle it on the ground in their cage area. They always go for the worms first! I column worms.

Are used to buy those Chinese made grown grubs from TSC/Tractor Supply, but then I got to thinking. They’re grown in China, remember years ago they had those scandal about the Chinese prisoners that they used to create the open man/human exhibitions that went around the country for display showing different states of human bodies dissected and displayed.

And then I thought China, that, worms, equals gross! How do we know if they feed them in China these worms? So I saw on Facebook the grumbly worm farm and decided to purchase their American in Canadian grown grubs.

I’ll never go back to China! The quality of the worms is so much better and I know what they are feeding them! And that’s that’s what goes into my own food once the eggs are produced! New thing Now I’m through the chickens, they are doing so much better than any other time in their lives their plumage is totally filled out and even in the winter time they are so healthy and beautiful.

And now in the spring we’re getting lovely eggs that have real nice shells as well from all the calcium from the grubs! Sorry for the grossness, But I think it brought the point home that where do you know that they’ve grown those grubs and with what quality feed or even chemicals or whatever who knows what’s what in the Chinese growers of grubs.

My flock disappears this stuff! I’ve tried a few other store brand dried bugs/grubs but they wouldn’t eat them. Then I noticed that all the bags of foods & supplies are outsourced. Wonderful things are produced worldwide, but the fact is that it’s foreign.

It could change the flavor or perhaps the processing used for production and varying safety & quality measures. I have no idea how it’s made even here in USA. But my chickens wouldn’t eat it makes me think their insects were being chemically processed.

Im still sad that I cant find anything locally sourced even at my local feed store! I took to the internet a while ago and gave Grubby Farms chick/layer feed and grubblies a try…. That was over 6 bags ago.

My chickens tear this stuff up. They have a nutty smell and there’s still meat inside, not completely hollow. Please continue to produce quality, safe, locally sourced, made in USA products. They love it and I feel good knowing that what I’m eating and serving my family & friends isn’t a mystery or health risk.

Have bought over 100 bags in assorted colors over time. Quality durable product however, over last 2-4 years the plastic quality has gone down & quantity of smaller senkos has gone down while price stayed same or higher.

Actually now, the Yum dinger falls & shimmeys better than Yamamoto senko w/better action in head to head comparison with same rod reel line & hook on weightless wacky rig. Done comparison on 2 Abu Garcia Med act spin.

rod, revo reel 10lb smack down hi vis braid & 8 lb gold label leader vmc finesse wacky hook 2nd Abu med act spin rod revo reel 8lb invisX same VMC finesse hook. Other was 6’10” Med light bait casting rod, Abu revo SX reel 10lb sunline sniper(diff line manuf to test line differences) VMC finesse wacky hook.

Then decided to use all set ups the same as were except changed hook to 1/16th and 1/8 oz weighted Berkeley wacky worm hooks. In each trial spinning & bait casting weighted & weightless the Yum dinger came out on top.

The closest one was the weighted hook & possibly the senko was tops or the same. Not a Yum fan, consist buyer or part of usual plastics arsenal. Typically use SK ocho for Tex rig & X-Zone true center sticks.

But the Yamato beat the xzone & ocho in all trials. I don’t think the difference in the two on Tex rig is enough to make a big difference to change companies. The colors of senko imo are better than dinger and below or equivalent of strike king.

Wish Yamamoto would go back to old or original plastics recipe, manuf process, salt content, plastics supplier, or curing process. For the price it’s hard to stick with senko when continue to be more expensive & growing than SK and esp yum while the quality goes down & quantity stays same or less the dinger comes in 30 pack for $9.

99 @ local shop while small ind pack of senko is $7. 99 for now will stick with ocho for overall salt content, action/shimmy on fall, colors, durability, cost efficiency, and quality.

This is actually my first rifle since the 80’s so I wanted to start with a. 22 before I move on to larger calibres. Obviously, this gun has a faux-tactical cool factor but aside from that, it seems well made and it shoots consistently.

The red dot site is quite nice although I had to look up a tutorial on youtube to understand how to use it. I had no idea a red-dot isn’t a regular scope – that you keep both eyes open as you look through it and focus downrange.

Super cool! My only complaint is that the (exterior) metal plates on the bolt and the BL# were both a bit rusty when I got the gun and I think they should have been protected with oil or something. The bolt was a bit sticky and I think that it was probably from friction between the bolt and the chassis.

I was able to clean and lightly oil both parts. I also love that there’s apparently no limit on. 22 magazine capacity. Less reloading.

Really happy i ordered this might be one of the best kept secrets for the garden. It is a low level organic fertilizer. Applied to our fruit trees and am putting in ground as i plant. Also trying as a growing medium to start a Moringa seed in as it has to be bug free most purchased garden soil is contaminated with bugs.

This seed starting mix is outstanding! It produced more volume than I expected. I started some seeds a week ago, and most of them have already started to sprout since the mix is great at holding onto moisture.

This is my first year using this Eco-coir mixture and I’m so glad I decided to switch from the seed starter I’ve been using for years. I mixed one of these coir starter bricks with a little of my all purpose seed starting mix (2.

5 cups) and a little vermiculite (2 cups) and I’ve had great success with germination so far. It seems to soften quickly when you add water so I was easily able to mix everything together and get perfect moisture for seed starting.

I’ve had problems in the past with damping off of my seedlings and I’m hoping that correct watering and this Eco- coir mix will solve that. So far so good.

I have been using the Eco-co Coir Seed Starting Mix for several years now. I actually add it with another seed starting mix from Gardener’s and have found that this works really well. The only drawback, and that is a slight one, is that you have to really watch not to over- or underwater the mix especially if you use just the coir.

I grow my seedlings under grow lights and forgot to check one time and the mix dried out, then I overwatered. Yep, had to start over. That is when I came up with the mix I now use and it doesn’t dry out so fast.

I’ve ordered this bag about 5 times for my hens. The first few bags they loved them, and the last two bags seem to be a bit stale and less appealing to the birds. A few of the hens aren’t even very interested in them when I scatter the fly grubs.

And the wild turkeys that come into the yard just look at them and keep moving. Then I just realized these and ALL mealworms and most grubs are grown in China. Some are microwaved to dry them. The ONLY grubs that claim to be 100% made in the USA are the brand “Tasty Grubs”. They do claim that their meal worms are raised in China though. Just the grubs are from USA. And the price is just as fair as the other brands.

If you’re looking for one product but are on a budget with your layers stop right here!! Look no further! BSF larvae is the biggest protein bang for you buck, she in particular, Fly Grubs. If you like worm fishing, there is no reason not have this worm in your arsenal. I picked up a bag of the 7” bubble gum worms and I could not be happier. I was shopping at the massive Rancho Cucamonga Outdoor World and I could tell by looking at the package that these worms would slay bass.

I just had to grab the pink Bubble Gum worms as I knew that they would make my fishing buddies jealous. The package that I purchased in Feb. 2020 has Kevin VanDam’s name on it, which means it works. The Super Finesse worms are not going to work every time, but when they do, enjoy it.

The worms have a softer texture than most plastic worms (apparently that is in the right up as well), but they hold on to the Texas style 3/0 EWG hook nicely. Using the worm in late winter, I caught a large mouth on my first cast.

On another fishing trip in late spring, I was sight fishing from a bluff, and I was catching spotted bass on nearly every cast. On one of those hookups, after setting the hook on a 1 & 1/2lb’er, a 2lb’er came up to grab the dangling end of the 7” worm.

When the time is right, I know the bass can’t resist it. I have to rate the 7” Bubble Gum worm at 5 stars.

I have used these worms twice so far. One quick observation I did make note of was that when casting these worms try to not power cast them if you are using a jighead. The worm will stretch out out & you’ll lose distance of your cast.

If you use a rattle, you will expose it & lose it when this happens. It is very hard to insert a glass rattle. You can do it if you have experience with ElaZtech material. These worms have very sensitive action.

It doesn’t take much to get a great wiggle from it. Perfect for slow,precise, fishing. It offers more worm for your buck & it can last a long time. After alot of hooked fish you can trim the head off for even longer use.

Remember, these worms are 7 inches long so you can get an unbelievable amount of use with em. There’s only a limited amount of colors right now. But I’m ready for some new colors. Electric blue, green pumpkin with purple flake, and red with purple and blue flash would be great!!! This worm has got a ton of applications it’s good for.

The bait is easy to rig. Rig it wakey style or on a small wide gap hook. It produce good numbers of fish both over grass or underneath cover. It has a nice shiny action while wakey rig or drop shot Good color selection.

I discovered Roboworms last year. don’t know why, but bought a pack. First cast yielded a nice largemouth. Since then I’ve consistently caught bass, bluegill, and occasional crappie with these. I mostly Texas rig, but have also had luck with Carolina and wacky rigging.

My favorite is the Pumpkin punisher 4. 5” and 6” straight tail. Local BPS doesn’t do a very good job stocking Roboworms, so I’ve found it best and easiest to order online.

I love this unit. It solved most of the problems. I previously had the Worm factory and the wormy ranch i had first. Fast forward 20 years, and I am older and less able to lift the trays of compost off each other to get to the good stuff.

This solves that problem. I like the fact that you can wheel it around if you need to which makes it easier to clean around it. The others I had were immovable unless you completely dismantled and unloaded them.

I also like the tray that the worm tea drains into. The other composters I had used a spigot in the bottom to drain the tea, and they plugged all the time, to a point where I finally removed them. They caused an anaerobic environment that was not healthy for the worms.

This tray has nice sharp corners and you can easily pour the tea from the corners into a watering can. Plus, since I have my worm composters outside in a shaded composting kind of patio type area that I built from plastic pallets, I sometimes had rodents chew into the old ones that they were able to get into because the lid just sat on them and they could crawl under it.

The lid on this closes securely. This one sets up on a nice strong metal framework with a garbage cart type hinged closing top. The only problem I am having, which BTW was worse with my other worm composters, is the fruit flies that are laying eggs around inside.

I plan to solve that issue by dusting the inside with diatomaceous earth, which will impale the larvae and the flies and hopefully solve most of the problem. This does not harm the worms. I am looking forward to harvesting my first worm compost by just detaching a single tray from the bottom.

It will be so much easier.

I saw the Hungry Bin while I was looking up questions about my Can O’ Worms bin. At first, I thought it would be superior to the Can O’ Worms. When I did the weekly watering on the Can O’ Worms, water would sometimes drip out from a couple of the legs.

When I first put the bin together it looked very clean and professional, so much so that I had it in a kitchen corner and no one suspected what it was. Now that two months have passed, however, I am having a lot of problems.

Gnats are flying all over the kitchen and gathering in the sliding door track by the hundreds. Since Day One, the worms are mostly up along the sides, or on the bottom of the lid. Many have jumped out and dried up.

And I only have 750 worms in there! God help me if I had 12,000, as they recommend. Unlike the Can O’ Worms, which has 3 layers and the middle is the worms’ bedding area, the Hungry Bin is just a huge plastic container with no distinction between bedding and feeding area.

The Can O’ Worms has a spigot to drain the “worm tea. ” The Hungry Bin just has a drip tray that sits on the floor and collects the liquid dripping out, and it’s difficult trying to pour the tea out from that tray into a watering can.

(Meanwhile, the liquid just drips onto the floor. ) My son complains about the Hungry Bin non-stop and keeps demanding I get rid of it. which would put me out $400+. I wish I had known this was going to be such a messy nuisance before I spent all that money.

If you grew up reading Bassmaster magazine like I did, you are familiar with the the Harry n’ Charlie stories at the end. Fantastic stories of fishing. Their favorite lure was a Scuppernong flavored jelly worm.

I have been using jelly worms now for several years and they still catch bass just as well as they did years ago. They work on a Texas rig, Carolina rig (Paul Elias set the heavy weight record for bass with a deep diving crankbait and a Carolina rigged jelly worm), used on the magnum shakey heads, and unweighted worked across the top of pond scum much like a frog.

I highly recommend jelly worms. Smaller sizes work best to catch numbers. Twelve inch worms still catch plenty of fish, but are ideal for big fish, working unweighted on top, and night fishing. I almost forgot to mention, they are scented like the name of the flavor jelly, (i.

e. Grape jelly worms smell like grapes) so it attracts bass without stinking up your hands. Twelve inch worms work best on a 5/0-7/0 worm hook.

Some of these guys are right this bait is old and should stay old it suck. I used all last summer and the previous one, never caught one fish on it. I got 2 bags of the grape color. I gave it so many chances its not funny.

The funny thing is that the minute I switched to a Senko I started catching fish. Yes it looks good in the water, but what looks good to me doesn’t necessarily look good to a bass. In my opinion its a waste of money, there are many worm baits that are so much better.

I still have some left so I’ll keep on using them until they all break. That is another thing, they break easy.

This is a great worm with very nice action. It sets up well on a 3/0 EWG. I use it with Gambler’s rattle weight and usually fish with darker colors: Texas-rig only. They used to have a deep purple/blue/black color that was deadly – but haven’t seen it in a couple of years.

TIP: Make sure to rig it perfectly straight or it will twist the line. This worm has a flat bottom side that greatly assists in rigging. TIP: Fish it slow- Hopping it off the bottom with long rod strokes – allow it to settle between hops.

The strike usually occurs while it is sitting still, as the tail wiggles while settling.

This past year I just really started bass fishing and I found some worms in a old tackle box in a old barn. They worked great , I could catch 5 bass on this worm before having to change it. Then the day came when I finished them off.

So I searched and searched for this worm and to find out the company that made the worm had gone out of business. So it was time to find something else that worked really well for me. So I bought a bag of Culprit grape shad original worms.

I caught a bass on the first worm out of the bag and first cast thrown. Then I was hooked bad , all three treble hooks were in. So yes it is a great worm!! Loving the Culprit’s!!.

yesterday i found a pack of either 10″ or 7. 5″ pack of these about 8-13 years old. seems like a bad idea to use them? they were just fine. almost like a brand new pack. but i used them crawling on the bottom and had a few hits.

but the real fun begins when you rig one up on a 2/0 worm hook and a1/16 ounce bullet weight and bring it along the surface like a snake and they hammered it. missed the hooksets because they were so short.

but the fish come when you use the same gear and jerk them around like a fluke. darts and walks and dives like a real minnow. awsome lures.

I bought the white gulp mullet at dicks at a very competitive price! Went fishing Fluke fishing mid July for flukes at Freeport Long Island and wow what results! An 8 pound flattie on The second drop! the white gulp mullet worked great even though the water was murky from all the rain! Thank you dicks you’re gulp selection is the best!.

Berkley Gulp sandworm is the “fish cracker” we called in west coast. It is so efficient sometimes when you are hard to come by live sandcrab from the beach this gulp is the one to use. It will used on C rig or dropshot when surfising, creating bites after bites.

Some people said this gulp is not a plastic but rather a live bait and it is kind of cheating. Well try it yourself and you will know why people love this stuff. Caught perch, crocker, and multiple bass on this!.

I purchased this at the Bass Pro in Hampton, VA. The item works extremely well and the Rock/Black Drum/Speckled Trout go crazy for them. Unfortunately, the pack of pink ones I recently bought were mostly unusable as most had missing tails and cuts throughout that wouldn’t allow a jig head to stay in place.

Berkley Company seems not to care. They told me that I needed to return them to Bass Pro in Hampton, which is one hour away, or mail them back, which would cost several dollars for a $6. 99 item. Berkley’s customer service is simply awful.

Bass Pro did just fine. The staff recommended these, and they were absolutely right about this being the right item to use. I just have a problem with the manufacturer and their service. Understand that if you spend $6.

99, you will only get a few serviceable swimming mullets.

This is my favorite stick bait brand because I typically fish really shallow in a heavily pressured lake. The fish are very wary, and the extremely slow sink of this thing is perfect. It lets the fish really take their time going in for the kill.

It could also be that this one looks so different in the water than other stick baits the fish may have seen because it falls so slowly and is just so seductive. I tend to fish it against the bank in laydowns on a weightless Texas rig.

It also does great as a wacky bait. Pinch it in half and you have a very good ned tail. The attractant seems to work–all my Yum baits get eaten and held onto for a long time. This is key for me as I fish mostly light mono with a lot of slack–just bumping the bait lightly for action, so feeling strikes isn’t very reliable.

I often don’t know they’re there until I go to bump the bait again and feel the weight. Truly, I can’t say enough for the Yum Dinger, as you can tell.

The Yum Dinger is perfect for Wacky Rigging when searching for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. I have great success when using a dinger with a wacky rig when Texas, Carolina and Ned rigs are not producing.

The most productive colors for me are Green Pumpkin, Watermelon/Red Flake and Motor Oil. I prefer to rig the 3″, 4″, and 5″ Yum Dinger weightless on Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap Hooks 1/0, 2/0, and 3/0 respectively.

This combination sinks slowly and will entice bites when other presentations fail. A very slight twitch as the dinger is falling often get an immediate strike.

My go to stick Bait Worms are Yum Dingers or Big Bite Bait. I have been fishing these plastic Worms for about 14 years. I fish them every way I can think of. The Colors, Sizes, Price, & Availability are a huge help plus the quality is good enough.

These 2 brands have earned their keep in my boats. I’ve been sucked into buying the pricey brands and they have proven to be just that Pricey but no better.

My 5yr old is obsessed with worms and loves to dig them out the garden and keep them in buckets but sadly she can never see what they are up too but with this she can watch them and she loves it. She checks on them several times through the day and as the transparent plastic enclosure is very sturdy I’m happy to let her take the cardboard shade off and on herself.

It is pretqty heavy though so we have moved it to a lower surface and she was struggling to lift it off the shelf to look at it on the table. She is asking questions about the worms and their habitat, luckily this came with a small leaflet which has answered some of the questions she had.

She really enjoyed setting it up with a little bit of help from her dad and even her older brother (11yrs) has started to check on them and ask about when they need to replace the leaves etc.

I bought this product for my great nephew’s 6th birthday. My nephew was almost as excited to get it set up and my gt nephew was. I received some great pictures of them setting it up and choosing their worms.

My nephew thinks it would be great for me to get the ant one too! A great choice, easy to set up they said and hopefully loads of learning and fun for all the family. Quite tempted myself!!.

I`m a keen gardener and considering permaculture no dig method to grow my vegetables. I wanted to observe the rate of worm movements in soil; this is an ideal set up. My 6 yr old grandchildren helped to prepare the Worm World and visit, often asking to see the ” worm experiment” with the cover off.

It`s great viewing for me at coffee break too. :)).
