20 Best Wool Socks For Winter (2023 Updated)

Never thought that we’d be writing a review about socks, nevertheless here it is! We’ve just discovered Darn Tough socks a few weeks ago because we replaced our 40-year old Eddie Bauer goose down parkas that were leaking down with new North Face Expedition goose down parkas.

We also completed our new winter gear with North Face insulated snow pants, beanies, and -40 insulated boots. So, we needed warm socks too, went online and voilà we discovered Darn Tough. Now, we know a thing or two about socks having gone through literally hundreds of pairs in our 80-year lives and 60 years together so far! For winter, we ordered a dozen pair, 2 pair each of the heavyweight hunter over-the-calf length for our daily walks on the trail in our new snow boots, and 4 pair each of the midweight boot length socks for everything else we do and for all day indoors.

Of course, we couldn’t pass up Da Bear socks, living here in beautiful Alaska as we do. Come spring, we’ll order another dozen pair, 6 pair each of assorted midweight micro-crew length socks for our trail walks and every other kind of daily use.

We received our winter socks and they fit fine, feel great, look good, and are hands down the best socks we’ve ever had in a long lifetime of hundreds of so-so socks! Darn Tough run about 20-30 bucks a pair, so an average 25 bucks times a dozen pair is 300 bucks, and another 300 for a dozen pair each of summer socks.

Of course we could have done with half the amount of socks but we wouldn’t have had any back ups in case we lost some or something else happened, so we doubled up for peace of mind. Now 300 bucks each for a dozen pair of the best socks that you can buy and wear is darn cheap, less than a buck a day for a year and they’ll last far longer with proper care than a year and are replaced free to boot! Ya gotta be nuts not to jump at such a bargain … and we’ve certainly not grown old and wise not being able to see a great deal right under our feet.

So-so smart socks, forsooth, be smarter and treat yourself to a dozen pair of Darn Tough socks, your feet that literally carry you deserve the best, you’ll not regret it, that’s for sure!.

After wearing through 2 dozen pairs of cotton socks AND a pair of polyester house-slipper-socks from working at home for the last 2 years, I got fed up and decided to spend a little (ok. a LOT) extra for some socks that would last.

After decades of extra thick stretchy cotton socks the differences were initially very striking, these socks don’t change shape or size when you put them on. Luckily I paid close attention to the sizing chart and got the proper size for me.

They are just wide enough to put on without forcing them, but my toes feel unconstrained. And, these socks are warm, I bought these in the middle of winter so I am currently enjoying the extra warmth, but I have apprehensions about what these might feel like come summer.

I bought this style because they said they came with cushioning, but I am not feeling it. After walking around my wood floor house in the evenings after work for an hour my feet feel beat to heck. These feel more like boot liners (granted.

that IS what they SAY they are) than the replacement for house-slipper-socks that I am trying to use them as. But, I’ll be willing to forgive the things that these are not, if they mean I don’t have to ask for socks every Christmas.

I have had them for a couple months so far, and I cannot tell the difference between how they look now, and how they looked when they came out of the package. I intend to see how well these hold up during the rest of this year, and if these 3 pairs that I bought last as long as the 2 dozen pairs they replaced, I’d say they were a good purchase; If they last longer, then I’d say they were a great purchase.

I am really enjoying these socks so far. They are very durable and comfortable. Due to the nature of my work, I need to wash these after almost every use so they have already made their way through the washer and dryer a few times.

I have noticed that the threads aren’t as neat as when I first got them, but the durability is still holding up. I mentioned in my title that this is a tentative review because I won’t know how I will truly feel about these socks until I’ve had them for a year or two.

I develop holes in my socks very quickly and I was drawn to your company because 1) you claim they last a long time and 2) you guarantee a new pair when the old one gets holes in it. Given these two things, I won’t know for sure how much I really like these until I see how long it takes to wear them out and I go through the customer service experience of returning the old ones and receiving a new pair.

If there’s any way you can contact me again about these in a year, then I feel like I will be able to provide a more honest review. That being said, loving these so far and am already planning to buy a pair or two of your lightweight hiking socks for my dad for Father’s Day.

He’s an avid hiker and wears through socks and shoes like crazy. I would also like to learn more about what you do with the old socks that get sent back in exchange for a new pair. I try to use my old socks as rags to reduce waste, so I’m not crazy about the idea of having to ship a pair of old socks, and I want to make sure your company is doing something sustainable with these old socks when you receive them (hopefully you don’t just throw them away).

I got new hiking boots last month that fit well, but 5 or 6 miles on rocky and rooty mountain trails made my feet a little sore. Not so since using these socks. No pain at all now. They are warm outside and comfortable in boots inside.

not hot. I love the cushioning. It’s like no other. I was concerned that the extra bulk would make the boots feel uncomfortably right. They don’t.

Used these socks when I did heavy back packing trips. Excellent quality especially with a thinner wool sock. Now that I’m older I still love these socks. Wear them with my urban hiking shoes and with my house slippers.

My feet are never cold. Love these socks.

I was looking for a pair of socks that could pack enough punch during the winter months to keep my toes warm even on the coldest of days. They have done just that, even in my rather lightweight winter boots.

As great Merino wool does, it manages the moisture created during hiking and snowshoeing excursions while also keeping you warm while lounging.

I bought these socks a month ago and have worn them a few times. Like other Bombas socks I’ve purchased these look good and feel better. These are high quality and you can really tell the difference when you put them on compared to other brands.

They’re snug, but not too tight; mine don’t fall but also don’t leave an indention mark on my legs.

I love Bomba socks and have a variety of styles. This particular version of the running socks seems a little bit looser than the other performance running socks that I have in the same style. Not sure why, the material just does not quite seem as snug.

They are super comfortable and I am wearing them, but probably won’t order more of this particular style just because on longer adventures I really don’t want the socks to be loose at all. Sidenote is they are the same size as the other Bomba socks that I have that are a little bit more snug.

Bombas really does make the best socks. They are soft and extremely stretchy without feeling restrictive. This particular style has a great tab back thats great for wearing a near no-show sock, while providing abrasion protection to your heel.

They hold up well to many many washes. These socks are so impressive that my extremely cheap father in law in a convert. All his socks are from Walmart and half have holes in them within the month he buys them.

We gave him a pack of these for Christmas one year and he was so impressed that he asked where we bought them. Typically, he would shy away from a sock in this price range, but he liked them so much that he replaced all his socks with this brand.

It holds the heat perfectly and does not emit bad odors. Perfect fit on the foot and ankle. Playing with a winter shoe cover you can use it with a summer shoe even with temperatures close to zero and up to about 15 degrees with or without toe caps.

Terrible sock. Inside looks like it wasn’t finished. A scraggly thread. Could hardly put on!!

These are awesome. Comfortable, stylish and definitely my go-to for any ride.

I have never bought wool socks before, I thought they would be itchy, but now I can’t believe I waited this long! These are wonderful. I live in NE Ohio, and the winters can get pretty cold, and these really keep my feet warm and are not too thick so my boots still fit.

Also, the tops don’t cut into my ankles, which is nice. I really like these and am considering ordering another batch.

Purchased for winter trip in Europe. Kept my feet warm and dry- no issues with moisture or fit. They are thinner than expected but thick enough to keep you warm with appropriate footwear. Worn during -5C to -10C weather with thick snow/sleet/rain.

I love these socks. I have ordered several and gave to my grandchildren as Christmas gifts. They are thin and so warm. Those were the only sicks I wore all winter.

I bought these roughly a year ago to wear for winter work. I work outside in the mountains and do ten hour shifts. I’ve always used the low setting just so they last long enough for an entire shift. Most days I’ll start the heaters about one or two hours into the shift and there are some times when I come back home eight to ten hours later and the socks still have power.

The socks definitely keep my toes warmer than they would be but the heating element is on the top of the toes and most of the heat seems to get sucked out of the bottom of my feet/shoes into the ground/snow.

This means the colder days can be a little rough. I just noticed yesterday that the heel is worn out on one sock and the other isn’t far behind. I guess this souldn’t be too surprising since I am on my feet alot walking and snowmobiling.

It would be great if ActionHeat would offer an option to purchase the socks without everything else (batteries, remote, etc) for people like me. But as it stands I will not be repurchasing these. I have several pairs of wool socks for summer work that I’ved owned for 3-4 years and they still don’t have heel holes.

Yea, I might be using these 30-40hrs a week in the winter but I still feel like $120+ socks could’ve lasted longer than one year.

Comfortable. These wool-blend socks are soft with just the right amount of stretch to conform to my foot and leg. Warm. The three heat settings allow me to choose the needed level of heat, low when in the house, medium or high when outdoors for extended times.

Long-lasting. Even in the medium and high heat modes the batteries last for hours. One concern keeps this from a five-star rating. I purchased two pair last year and one of the socks stopped heating so i purchased a replacement pair this year.

This was a gift to my father. He’s 100% disabled vet and try’s to walk his dog daily. He’s in northern Ohio so it’s cold now. He can’t feel when he is cold so I thought these would be perfect. The first time he said he loved them, and he felt the warmth.

After the 2nd wear the pocket that holds the battery came off. The sock stopped producing heat as well. Now only one sock is warm. He tried to sew it back on but it still doesn’t work. Good thought but didn’t deliver any quality.

I would not recommend as a gift for a hero, someone you love or any homeless people. It will be a big disappointment!.

Good quality, very well knitted, but I’m unsure about the size: I guess the foot length is good but they seem a bit loose (for very thick feet and ankles). They’re maybe more suitable to wear as second layer (house socks).

The socks are top notch but the communication and shipping are less than desirable. Great product! Slow to ship, not good communication. \nI’m sure they will rebuke in a way that makes me look bad but the simple truth is that they have a wonderful product and slow to ship or communicate.

It took several weeks to be delivered due to the holidays plus the pandemia – which if OK, but after a few days of use there was already a hole in the wool. Frustrating 🙁

I thought the socks were good value for money. They are fairly thick and I have found them fine under garters but would struggle with them fitting under competition boots. The sizing was hard to judge e.

g. small,medium, large. When socks arrived the size number guide was on label. If this had been available on product description I would have opted for smaller size as they are very stretchy and too big.

Lovely warm socks, excellent quality. I will likely look to get some summer weight socks as well based on how nice these are.

Second time buying these. Find them comfy and don’t fall down inside my boots

Great winter sock, great quality but after a few washes it they seemed to shrink a little bit, even though they were hang dried. This is expected with wool. Kept my feet warm in -20-30C temperatures in non winter boots.

WHne wearing winter boots, the socks would keep my feet dry and very comfortable, I noticed the heel sections wearing off after a few days worth of use and only 2 washes but that maybe due to my feet and tac boot wear and tear on my socks and feet from having them on almost 16 hours.

The socks wicks the sweat from my feet and since wearing these socks, my boots and feet do not have that slight foot odour. I would recommend these socks to anyone working in cold to freezing temperatures.

Way to thick a sock for summer use. Winter only and for boots only. Sock is to thick for any other footwear besides boots. And it seems the little thread loops on the inside unravel very easily, these will get wrapped on your toes when trying to put the sock on.

It’s an ok sock but it ain’t worth the money.

The inflatable is fun to have in my yard. It was very easy to put up. The first one I bought did not work and Wilco was easy to return the product and get another one. I gave the socks away.

ONLY 38% merino wool instead of the claimed 52% merino wool. This wool helps with odor and obviously with less of it will make it cheaper and less quality. I ordered online and pickup in store, I feel scammed.

So annoying and will never trust again.

I bought a pair of these last month and used them this weekend for hunting. They feel thick and warm at first but they are anything but. They offer ZERO R value when sitting on the deer stand. Spend the extra money and get Smart Wool socks.

These went in the trash. Field & Stream products are one step up from Ozark Trail at Walmart.

The socks were nice and felt good. Unfortunately when I washed them they produced hundreds of little fuzz balls that got attached to everything in the washer. It might be my fault as I put them with other items and washed on medium cycle in warm water.

I hoped they would come off in the dryer on low but no luck. Spent a long time removing the balls off the socks and everything else. Guess I’ll wash on cold by themselves next time and see what happens.

I’ve been wearing these socks 5 times and they already have holes at the position of the big toe. And yes, my nails are cut. Very expensive for a low quality.

Bought these socks as I work outdoors at night. Brilliant socks that kept my feet warm. Definitely buy some more of these!!!

Total Waste of money. Socks quality are really bad. without washing they become very rough

I just purchased 6 pair of these cold weather socks while on sale. All of them had quite a strong chemically oil type smell to them. Figured I’d throw them in the wash with some scent killing laundry soap along with all of my thermal base layers to get ready for this up coming hunting season.

Well that was a mistake. Everything I put in the wash now has a crude oil type stink to it. Everything. Socks still reek worse than everything else. No way I’d ever get close to an animal with that powerful smell.

Waste of money. Quality has gone waaaay downhill since my last couple pair a few years back. Even my daughter cringed and asked about the smell by the washing machine.

I bought me first pair about 10 years ago and loved them. Unfortunately the quality has deteriorated and so do the socks! They develop holes very fast, and the material sheds even faster. These are the best socks I’ve ever owned, but I can not justify the cost when they don’t last.

If holes don’t develop, the. The material sheds and I’m left with patches that are nothing but the nylon, or spandex webbing.

I’m retired, but my dogs, a Black Mouth Cur male and a brindle Catahoula / Pit mix Cur female, are not! Every morning, every season, weekends included, we cross the highway close to our house and wander and kinda hunt and mostly walk and de-stress and commune with the outdoors in a reclaimed prairie area that includes about 90 acres of scrub and woods and trails and borders the railroad line.

We usually stay out for over an hour (longer, if a train gets between us and home) and never. NOT ONCE. have my feet been cold! I’ve always liked socks that came to my knees and rarely could find any.

I also buy them a little large, knowing that after several washings, they will tighten up a little. I usually get about 3-4 years use from each pair, but then I am using them every day. I normally buy 3 pair each Fall and sometime during the winter, a couple of old pair will give out in the heels.

I think it is just from how I walk and from always shoving them into boots. These are also the most cushioning I’ve found, and important feature to me since I have neuropathy. Please keep making them!.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The true and honest name for these socks should be: RUST ORANGE HEATHER. A bright, cheerful color, that will bouy the spirit through those dreary, dark Winter months.

We have found using something like a Woolite detergent, and laying flat the socks in layers of fluffy towels to dry, offers the best results. These Raggs are the best out there, but just woefully misrepresented.

I bought these socks, looking for a comfortable, breathable foot experience. The socks are indeed breathable, but the weave is far from comfortable. The weight may be too thin, and each thread is discernible underfoot.

And, after wearing the socks about 5 times this past summer, the heels started to fray, and now I have holes in each of the heels. I’ve always liked ragg socks, but the quality of these leaves a lot to be desired.

These are nice, comfortable winter socks. But they are insanely tall! They reach so high on the leg that they’re practically knee socks. This is not what I expected, but there is no indication of this in the description, nor in the images.

I expected something like a regular ragg wool sock, which covers up to above the ankle but not way up the calf.

Santini wool socks are must haves for winter cycling. It’s quality is beyond par. I am happy that I buy them.

I wear a shoe size of 43. I chose the right size, but when I tried it, it fits a little tight. I bought it in advance for winter, so I’ll wait a little longer before using it.

Cool light socks. They wick sweat away perferctly.

I bought these to use with rubber hunting boots. The socks are bulky and handle moisture well. Over the calf length just right for rubber boots. Like them so much that I’m getting another pair while they are still available.

The soft bulk ot these would not be my first choice with stiffer leather hunting boots, but they are my favorite for use with rubber hunting boots.

I have been wearing these socks for the last 10 years. I wear these socks almost every day. I work in the woods and wear leather boots in the summer and leather packs in the winter and these socks are awesome for either.

I usually get 2 years out of a pair. As I have 4-5 pairs so they get worn at least once a week. Socks stay put up over calf and don’t slide down like many other I have worn. Great for keeping long underwear ticked into.

Under the ball of the foot and back of the heal are wear the start breakdown and develop holes for me. When that happens time to get another pair. Worth the money if you get a year out of them in my opinion.

Wish the deal of buy three set and get $3 buck off each set would come back!!!! Ahh the good ole days.

I’ve got a few pairs of merino winter socks from various brands, and these instantly became my new favourite pair! Have worn them a couple of times in temperatures of ~0C, paired with a pair or overshoes and there has been no hint of cold toes.

They’re incredibly soft and comfortable making them a pleasure to wear, and while it’s early days the quality seems very good too. I also love the reflective band around the ankle, makes much more sense for a winter socks rather than being around the cuff.

Worth every penny!.

Worked well for their first ride but after one wash (30C synthetics) they are too loose to stay up and gradually fall. Therefore useless. My partners bought aero socks from another brand and they were much tighter, quite difficult to get on.

I imagine they will do a better job of staying up.

Bought 2 pairs of Fingercrossed. Nice! Interesting anti-slip print on foot. It gives more contact with your shoes. Like colour and fit.

These socks are really nice and comfy and a lot thicker than I expected. I have some Ecco walking shoes that I was struggling to find socks for to prevent blisters but allowed my feet to breathe, and these socks did the trick.

I am no hiker or walker so cant comment on how they’d perform in the wild, but I walk about 3 miles a day going to and from work so the socks do the job I need them to. Recommended.

Nice, comfortable but found the two layers result in them shifting around a bit. Haven’t used them for hiking yet, so can’t say if it will impact that.

Good socks, the material on the foot is unusually not as padded as the ankle area. Other than that they are warm and should work well- good enough that we return purchased a second pairs. For any quality sock you have to pay a premium price unfortunately.

Good sound pair of socks which after 3-4 washes still have held true to size, time will tell if continue to do so, but biggest complaint of many other socks, to include premium hiking socks!.

Described as fitting 6-11 sizes I could not get them onto a size 10 foot withour tearing the material. and even then a very tight fit. Where the word ‘thick’ comes into the description of the sock material is beyond me, they are paper thin.

Ordered the same size as my other Highlander socks but these are so tight/small/close fitting that I can’t actually get them on. Major rethink needed if you’re going to sell anymore of these – binned
