12 Best Wood Splitter Drill Bit (2023 Updated)

These Freud Forrstener bits are Austrian made and produce a smooth flat bottomed hole with very little effort. They cut very fast and do not get as hot as other less sophisticated bits. The only thing I would do with this purchase is spring for the couple of extra dollars for the set in the fitted box.

I spent considerable time making a fitted case for this set.

Don’t get caught buying cheap forstner bits. These Freud bits cost a little more than a lot of other less expensive brands but as the old saying goes “you get what you pay for”. After researching all the other brands Freud came out as one of the top choices among woodworkers.

You will not be disappointed with these.

I bought these bits originally to bore holes through some ¾ inch hardwood. The bits drill quick, clean holes and make a much cleaner cut when you bore through the other side. It’s not as clean as hole saw, but it’s a lot better than the tear out you see when you use a spade bit.

It was when I started using these bits for reno projects that I ran into problems 1. I figured the bits would make quick work of drilling holes through 2×4 joists for laying conduit, but I found the bits would bog down about inch into the wood.

Turns out the self-feeding screw tip will rapidly draw the bit into contact with the material and stall the drill. I found this to be a big problem in wood with knots. If you have a really powerful corded drill or a cordless impact driver (which is what I used to finish the job), then you can enough torque to keep these bits turning, but even an 18V drill will stall.

2. Even a small brad nail will wreck these bits. The tips on these bits aren’t low quality, but if they hit a nail it will gouge the cutting blades. I haven’t been able to find a way to file out the damage.

(A Drill Doctor doesn’t work with this speedbor design. ) This led to pick up some good quality DeWalt spade bits (#54-0637-8) for doing rough work like building a deck. They work great, don’t bog down if you use a regular drill, and can be easily sharpened if they take damage from a nail.

I can’t say that the Speedbor bits are a bad product. They work well, but they can damaged so easily that I find they are only useful in a wood shop, not a reno project or work site.

Good price for this make and arrived quicker than expected. My son-in-law said “they made quick work of my test piece and very clean holes”

I like these bits so well that I’ve purchased multiple sets for myself and to give to family and friends. They feed through the wood SO much better than the bladed bits!!! You have to search a bit for larger sizes but they are worth it.

Brilliant cut, clean through oak and soft woods. Perfect holes every time on a low/medium speed. Should have invested in one ages ago. Perfect fit for making TLight holders. Not cheap but clearly get what you pay for.

Much cleaner finish than flat bits or hole saw. Well happy.

Bought the 45mm size. Could have bought cheaper, but have always found Bosch products excellent quality. Well worth the extra expense.

I had previously purchased a cheap set of drill bits which didn’t stay sharp very long. Needed a 15mm bit so I purchased the Bosch. Used it for installing dowels in a bench I was making. Nice clean cut and sharp no wobble.

Used it again today with a cordless drill and it worked well. So glad I spent a bit extra on a good bit. Will definitely buy Bosch again.

These bits are very aggressive, they pull themselves into the wood quickly. Your instinct is to resist/pull back but on a drill with speed control on the trigger you make the bit go faster. Slow the drill speed down as much as you can and control as much as possible.

They were on offer, now I know why. Get decent spade bits. Happy drilling.

Having used spade bits and other auger bits I can tell you that these are well worth the money. I dont know how Irwin does it but these chew through thick wood like nothing. Be sure to use a drill with a side handle or use the torque setting on your drill other wise it may bind and turn helicopter!!.

Time saver, cut through wood very quick and easily. Use this with impact drill. Last me good enough to time before the sharpest goes .

I prefer wood joinery, mostly using dowels, some I make. Glue-up with dowels is high anxiety time for me. I am almost done making four screens and gates, cedar and redwood, to share less of our back yard with the deer who own this place.

Miller dowels made assembly so easy. Alignment of materials is accurate and results are attractive. I chose oak dowels which I leave proud to create a visual pattern. Easily done with the Miller bit.

It is very sharp. And, the dowels are well made to match the bit. I enjoy this method so much that I ordered the mini bit and dowels to try on small furniture builds.

I recently bought a set of these to compliment my new Makita 1/4 hex drive drill driver (not available from Axminster yet). I was very pleased with them. I really only need 5&6mm for clearance holes,but it was cheaper to buy the set rather than individual drills.

They cut very well indeed. One reviewer complained that they were made in China. So what? With Bosch QC, this shouldn’t be a problem. For yearsI have had a Bosch 8mm auger bit made in PRC. Still cutting well.

Not top of the line, but very good for the price. They drill clean holes with very little tear going in, leaving a nice clean edge. Good box too, although the plastic is a bit too brittle, so you have to be careful with it, or it will certainly shatter upon a slightly stronger bump or impact.

Very pleased with these drill bits – seem like good quality and good clean holes. Handy case is useful and not flimsy.

Makes perfect holes very little effort and much easier to get going then the flat counterparts

Good quality fast cutting wood bits

Bought two, as my previous 4 mm brad point drill bit that was purchased elsewhere, broke while using it in a hand drill, which did not get stuck or anything. The drill purchased from Rockler helped me complete a gift in time for Christmas.

The only negative, which really isn’t, is the tiny 4 mm drill bits, which occupy a space, with packaging of about 5 inches by 1 1/4 inches were in a bag something of the size of 11 x 14″ Shipping was prompt, though I paid more for the shipping than the price of one drill.

I purchased several drill sizes from drills and cutters other than the#19 HHS. They all came as ordered and delivered as advertised. The choice of ordering by inch, mm, or no. was a tremendous help when stardard sizes don’t quite do the job.

Faced with challenge of drilling several 5/8″ one inch deep holes in 1 1/4″ aluminum stock, I wanted smooth — chatter and gall-free — results. This drill bit — ~840 rpm in drill press — worked superbly!.

used the polished jobber bits to drill 320 stainless and they did a nice job . I drill on approx 100rpm with lubricant and the bits stayed sharp . A good value and nice bit for the price
