20 Best Wood For Closet Shelves (2023 Updated)

I read the other reviews about how this was hard to put together and the screws and fittings didn’t match. I figured I’d give a go anyway. I got it home and took it out of the box. I had a quick look at the parts and started on my way.

I had it together in 2 minutes while I watched TV. I put it in my entrance where I keep my shoes and had a look at it. It wasn’t level. Then it dawned on me!!! The shelf holes were different on each side piece.

I shook my head and laughed at myself. I took it apart and put it back together. This whole process took 5 minutes. It was the easiest thing I’ve ever bought and put together. It could be about 2 inches wider so three pairs of shoes can sit flat but I can get five shoes on easily with the sixth on its side a bit.

No big deal!! It looks decent and I got it on sale to boot!!.

I bought two shoe racks recently, one from Rubbermaid and this one. The Rubbermaid rack looked more stylish, but, much to my surprise, this one was a lot sturdier! It does not sway when assembled due to the shelf racks’ L-angled back pressing against the wood sides and keeping them square.

Most other shoe racks I’ve seen lack this level of structural forethought and sway side-to-side precariously. However, it was not all good. As some other reviews have mentioned, this product can have assembly issues.

In my case, it was because some of the shelf racks had paint covering the screw threads on their rod ends, preventing the nuts from going on. I had to pick the paint off the threads with an Exacto knife.

Only two out of sixteen rod ends were like this, so it wasn’t too much hassle, but enough for me to dock one star. If many more rod ends were painted over, I would have exchanged it.

I had a very similar product I purchased several years ago and I wanted to add another. This is nearly identical, but I can tell the materials are cheaper and they skipped on the finishing touches. No screw covers and worst of all the edges of the shelves weren’t rounded off === VERY sharp so be cautious when grabbing at your shoes! I suppose you get what you pay for, but I’ve purchased a similar rack of different shape/size by a different manufacturer and the edges were rounded off so I won’t be bleeding all over my wardrobe! I’m keeping it because it what I wanted for storage purposes (specifically the shape/size is the same as my old one), but if this was a new purchase I’d probably send it back purely for safety reasons.

These shelves are exactly as described, which was a huge relief — they fit into my closet perfectly. Good quality, ordering more now!

Difficult assembly. lousy instructions. needs two cool heads. almost impossible to perfectly line up the doors so they open and close smoothly. disappointed at spending another $130 for additional shelves that “seemed” to come with the original package as we are using it for storage, not hanging clothes.

Therefore, it now has become more expensive. But it looks good.

Not included in Grand Wardrobe so ordered 2x shelves separately. Received in time; well packaged; fit well in the wardrobe; no issues; happy with the Grand wardrobe and solid wood shelves.

fits perfectly. I thought I was going to use the large middle space for hanging jackets, but it’s so roomy, I thought the shelves were a better option. Lots of room for beddings, sweaters, etc.

Looks great! Has taken quite a bit of time to install (cutting the shelves and the curtain rods for a small closet takes a lot of tools and know how) but overall it was fairly straightforward. The rods were missing the correct hardware to hang them which means a trip to the hardware store, but not a huge deal.

Overall it is a beautiful system and it seems very sturdy and durable. I am so excited to have a closet again!.

Perfect for shelving. We used them in our linen closet. The color is really nice.

Arrived on time and was packaged well. The shelf fit perfectly into my existing closet built-in!

They had little or no package protection and arrived damaged.

Its a nice enough shelf and looks good once i got it on wall. However, the material is pretty cheap. The shelf is particle board and one corner was a little crimped when we got it. Also the brackets didn’t have the holes drilled completely for the optional hook bar, so i had to drill myself.

And the screws are so cheap, im not even sure they were metal. My screwdriver took the head right off two of them. Lastly, the shelf directions don’t account for not being able to hit studs. Im not sure if thats because the nails are so cheap or what but we made sure to get screws into studs and not molly anchors.

This item is great! It looks great and has good use. The material is decent and the assembly is fairly easy too. The only thing is that it ships in 3 different packages and it’s not súper study but other than that it’s functional.

This was a lifesaver. The bedroom is 9 x 11 plus a 9 foot wide closet so very little room for a dresser. I bought several more drawers. It looks professional. Just be careful when assembling as I am not so handy but was able to assemble it.

I’m 55 female and it took me about 2 days to assemble. The drawers took me 2 days too. The holes aren’t pre drilled but I am very happy to have it.

I read previous reviews before I purchased this unit. I thought it would be a Sunday afternoon project. It turned out to be much complicated. Most of it was because how novice I was. Anyway after a week and 4 trips to Lowe’s, it is finally done! We used to have wire system in the closet.

To my surprise, after I took the system off, there were big holes on the wall. So my 1st trip back to Lowe’s, I bought stuff to patch the holes, sandpaper, primer and new paint. Then I found out the new paint didn’t match the old one.

My 2nd trip to Lowe’s, I bought enough new paint to paint the whole closet as well as brushes, roller etc. It took me two days to get the closet ready for the organizer. Then one of the bottom shelf was defect.

They made it upside down. My 3rd trip to Lowe’s to exchange the shelf. When I started to put the drawers together, one of the drawers have a broken piece. Hence my 4th trip to Lowe’s. The final product looks great in the closet.

I would like to give it a 4 star. But since I had 2 defective pieces, I gave it a 3 star. Before I started this project, I determined I would it do myself with minimum help from my husband. After several cuts and bruises on my fingers and legs, and a week of hard work, I finally did it.

My husband said whatever I had learned through this project is useless to me as I probably won’t do it again. But I felt I am one step closer to complete independence through this journey. Never thought putting together a closet would give me such a self realization.

So I give it one more star.

Love that the product is made of wood, unlike others that are made from particle board. The quality of the product speaks for itself and it shows. The finish is very good, with clean and square cuts.

We love that the closet system allows customization to fit different size closets. The reason I only gave 4 stars was because there was some scuffing and denting from the shipping and handling of the product.

Packaging could be improved. Overall great product.

Recently purchased this system in order to transform our master bedroom walk-in closet from bare essential to one with a more “grown-up”, classy look. We were not disappointed in the end result! Do be prepared for this to be pretty much an all day project.

As avid DIY-ers, we’re at a fairly advanced skill level, yet it took a good 7-8 hours to finish. Part of it is deciding on just what layout works best for your needs. (stopping and measuring items of clothing that you want to accommodate, like how wide a space do you really need for long garments) and some of it is the lengthy discussions you have with your spouse on the importance of doing so!! The hardware comes organized in ‘lettered’ bags.

We suggest that you lay them all out in alphabetical order. The first instruction page DOES define what’s in each lettered bag, but the installation instructions themselves only refer to the hardware pieces by size, NOT by the ‘letter’, making it a little confusing.

Not to worry, you’ll get the hang of it. The color is rich (we chose red mahogany), the pieces are solid wood, strong and sturdy. We selected the metal rails vs. the wooded ones as we were concerned about the sliding of hangers marring the wood finish over time.

The only real surprise was with the drawer bottoms. They are not wood but rather a thick, composite of sorts. They are NOT flimsy and are certainly an improvement over the bottoms found in the systems you can purchase from the big box stores.

The bottoms are covered with a nice, soft, black velvet-like fabric. Highly recommend this product line as it appears to a very good value. Now, it does come with only a 1-year warrantly so we’ll be watching to see how it performs and holds up over time.

A couple of comments to the manufacturer: it would be REALLY nice if the system had a shoe rack option. And about those little green ‘inspection’ stickers that are on every piece; they are very, very hard to remove and you have to be careful not to scratch the finish when doing so.

Suggest you use ones which are much more removeable friendly!.

I purchased two closet organizers for a master bedroom walk-in closet. One was a 5-Drawer with glass doors, the other was similar, but with shelves rather than drawers and doors. The instructions and online help from the company was very good; the final project looks great.

Essentially, the organizer is a kit with which you can create a number of different arrangements, so it takes a lot of planning, some basic skills, and as the instruction videos say, “Measure twice, cut once.

” With that said, I do have a few complaints. First, John Louis Home should do a better job in packaging its product for shipping. One package was hit hard on its side, so a shelf inside was completely shattered.

The second package had a small dent on an edge, but it carried through and dented two pieces of wood. The company replaced the shelf; I was able to hide the dented pieces (i. e. , put the in the back).

Second, John Louis is lacking a bit in Quality Assurance. Some wood members were thicker than others, so while some metal brackets simply dropped into place (as the video shows), others had to be bent for them to fit.

Which leads to my third complaint. Third, the finish looks great, but is very, VERY fragile. By that I mean if a metal bracket is a bit tight, when you remove it you’ve damaged the finished wood surface.

The company provides you with a “touch-up kit,” which essentially turns out to be a magic marker – only good for small scratches. I have the “red mahogany” finish, and found paste shoe polish works wonders (use an old toothbrush to apply, then rub it off with a paper towel).

Am I happy with the end product? Yes, but there was a definite learning process along the way.

I love closets by liberty! I have them in every closet in my house. I bought extra doors for my walk in master closet and they are fantastic. They are so well designed, easy to install and a pleasure to use.

These drawers are great and are very functional. Added 6 more to my closet system. Assembly is a little tedious but they come together quick after the first couple. After 12 it takes a couple minutes each.

We use these shelves in a laundry room to hold all paper products (towels, TP, tissues, etc), laundry items, infrequently used cleaning products, and assorted other items that don’t fit in the kitchen.

They have a very nice appearance and appear sturdy. But my major complaint is their high price. I could use another 36″ shelf, but will wait for an Elfa sale. I deducted one-star due to price.

As described, well made. Recommend for an extra shelf in your armoire if you dont use the rack (as I dont).
