20 Best Wood For Chicken Coop (2023 Updated)

First off, it is small. but that was expected due to reading the measurements before purchasing. What sold me is the functionality and design of this coop over the others. I ordered 2 coops with plans of having 2 hens in one coop for eggs and 2 hens and 1 rooster in the other for reproduction.

I would not recommend more than 3 chickens per coop. I received the 2 coops just one business day after ordering which was the fastest I have ever gotten a delivery without paying for it. When opening the box, everything looked confusing, but there is literally ONE instruction sheet (front and back) that makes it very simple! I had both coops together within an hour.

Everything lined up perfectly and every angle was very precise on both coops. I was impressed! The paint is nice and adds a touch of class instead of just a wooden chicken coop sitting in your yard. Now, this is what I’ve done to make it even better.

I braced the roosting stick inside of the coop with screws from the outside. I also braced the nesting box with a few extra screws as well just in case. Make sure to pre drill your holes as to not split the wood! Everything was very sturdy before I made these adjustments, but over time I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I also added a treated 2 x 4 boarder around the bottom perimeter to life the coop up off of the ground to keep the bottom of the frame from getting wet and rotting. Lastly, although it says it’s weather treated, I put a weatherproof sealant on the entire coop myself.

I feel better knowing that these cool little coops will last longer for me now that I’ve made these adjustments. I would DEFINITELY recommend getting these if you’re looking for something for a few chickens!.

The coop is well priced. It arrived early. We had to put three coats of paint per piece per side to seal it. The roosting bar needs to be reinforced. The predrilled holes on the roof didnt line up and we had to use extra.

Its been through one rain, water got into the roof of the nesting box and there is a bubble. We have small girls right now and they fit ok. I would recommend three or less. I really love the cage under the coop.

It is spacious and it gives them more overall room. I would not buy it again.

Overall pleased with the coop. Pay attention to dimensions, as it’s not overly big, but fits our 3 hens easily, could fit a 4th one as well. Not the highest quality material (some minor splitting during assembly.

After searching multiple websites and reading tons of reviews I was feeling pretty confused. So many coops had horrible reviews about it being flimsy or tiny. I found this coop and felt hesitant but I got it anyways and put it together myself! This coop is the perfect size for 4 or 5 chickens.

It’s super cute and sturdy enough for my covered run I have it in. I’m am happy with this coop and glad I gave it a try.

Price is right. Pretty well made. Assembled in less than an hour. Has a thin stain, but should be re-stained prior to use. Is mobile, can be lifted by two people easily. Recommended for 3 or less chickens.

My four, full size, chickens love it! They totally know it’s there space, it’s easy to clean and simply construction. It’s sturdy and the materials seem pretty weather resistant without a sealer; however, ours is in covered area since we live in a desert like climate, so I may be biased.

I would definitely suggest a sealer if you’re not planning to put this in a shady area. The fenced in area and the dowels did require additional security so they don’t fall off/detach.

this is my second coop in five years. they hold up well and after five years i am buying the same product again….get this one…your ladies will love it

This coop is very small. We had 2 cinnamon queen chickens in it for over a year. But, it was almost to small for them. It definitely will not hold 6 chickens. We are currently using it to house 13 baby chicks and they are quickly outgrowing it.

This coop is small which is what I needed for my hens for the first year it is kinda flimsy but with a little carpentry knowledge you can reinforce it I had 4 hens and it worked well for them until they grew up then it is too small.

This coop is cute but small. The latch closure does not seem strong enough to keep out the predators. Especially those smart raccoons!

it is very small! it is too small for even one chicken or rabbit. It is easy to assemble. Quality of wood and furniture are very poor. You can’t use it outdoor, because wood is not treated. Any rain or just humidity will damage frame.

Doors are not working, they just got stuck in frame. But it is look nice on photo. I would say – it is toy-house for kids indoor play room. Do not put any live creature inside – it will be cruel.

Poorly made. Didn’t even last 6 months without issues. The tray that lines the cage rotted and there’s a hole in it. The ramp that allows my chickens to go up into the coop is now in pieces. I cannot use this for my pets.

Extremely disappointed and hoping to get my money back.

Im using this hutch for my (free range) rabbit only during the nighttime and bad weather. I was expecting it to be bigger, but it still works just fine. It looks super nice and its sturdy. All the doors give a ton of access inside.

Instructions are a little hard to figure out but not the worst Ive seen. Overall, good for the price I paid.

Its a little smaller than expected. Definitely wont hold adult chickens, but will be good for my chicks while I build something else. Locks need some reinforcement to keep raccoons and things out. Otherwise, its very nice to look at and very convenient.

It was pretty easy to put together, it took me 4 12 hours and it looks good. A little smaller than I originally imagined, but my 4 little girls love it.

This is an amazing product. I’m using it for 2 rabbits. It’s super easy to access all the parts for cleaning, there’s plenty of space for the rabbits and multiple hay/litter boxes, some toys and tunnels etc.

The rabbits are really happy in there, it’s very good to access the rabbits too as they tend to come to the top box for feeding, then you can slide the door shut and trap them in there so you can grab them and handle them etc.

It looks very sturdy and well made, it doesn’t look out of place in my garden. The wire is a little weak and I’m not sure how fox proof it would be for chickens, luckily I’m in a rather foxless area and the coop is right outside my back door against the wall and under a patio roof so relatively safe.

By far the best coop/hutch I’ve owned or seen, extremely practical and great size and design for the animals. It also lets a lot of light in and the top is sturdy and good for storing things on top of (I have a rabbit carrying case and some hay bags etc up there in a storage box) Definitely recommend for rabbits/guinea pigs.

Great Coop & Run. We keep 3 silkies in this. They roam free by day in our garden, but if they don’t through winter, I wont feel so bad. Enough space for them in here. Good build quality. Easy to pop together.

Takes an hour or two with a drill. Caging decent quality, wood decent quality, screws good quality. Be aware holes for the screws in the roof are already there. Took me a while to realise they were pre-drilled.

Just hard to see. Also roof over the run area doesn’t open up. But no biggie. Good value for money! To save the wood for longer and ensure your chickens don’t become chicken dinner, consider bedding a timber rectangle into the soil and screwing your coop and run onto it.

I was slightly hesitant when I read some reviews, but when it came I was surprised at how easily and quickly I assembled it on my own (I am 76). I bought it to keep quail in and it is ideal for this purpose.

Negative point water can get into the nest boxes but a plastic runner soon solved this. For quail you cannot have the whole roof lifting as one, for if they are in the coop they can fly out and if they are in the run they can also do so.

I did not join the roof as one but left it in the two sections, one over the coop the other over the run, problem solved. I have 16 day old quail in the coop, with a 12 inch 40 watt tubular heater in, temp is at 25 to 30 degree centigrade.

On sunny spells I let them out into the run (which is on grass) and they come back in when I want them to, also the water and food is in the coop, another reason for them do do so. This coop and run is Ideal for my purpose, anyone wanting a superior product can do so but at a much higher price.

So I purchased this coop for my daughter who is in $-H and wanted to show a chicken. It’s very cute, but NOT sturdy at all. Put it together wherever you want it to stay, as it will literally fall apart if you try to move it, even just a few inches.

Be prepared for the wood to split when you drill the screws, so I recommended making the pre-drilled holes just a tad bigger. Also, try using wood glue to reinforce. This will make a good temporary home for 2 pullets, but I would not want to make 2 full sized chickens live in this.

The run under the actual coop becomes a nasty mess in a very short period of time and your animals would be at a much higher risk of disease if not cleaned almost daily. We plan to use it for our chicks as we introduce them to the rest of the flock in our new much larger coop purchased after we discovered how flimsy this one was.

Oh, and it doesn’t really give you good protection from predators either, as the doors can be easily pulled open even when locked. On a positive note, the pull-out drawer is nice, and the nesting boxes are plenty big, but the floor of the nesting boxes has gaps, which is again dangerous because they’re easy targets for predators.

I wanted to give 5 stars but the ladder that our chicken is supposed to climb up and get to the roost, is difficult to get to and it is way too narrow. It is located all the way to the back wall and ends at the foot of the right side wall of the coop.

The ramp leading into the coop from the outside is located directly in the middle. So, Sweetie is supposed to enter, turn far right and then go up a very narrow stairway, She’s a free range farrell Ameraucana, full grown chicken we rescued from the cold and we bought her her new home after trying to locate the owners for 4 months.

We may have to make some modifications to make it work, such as widening the interior ramp and somehow adjoining it to the ramp from outside. That part is very disappointing as she doesn’t know how to go up into the roost.

I’ve only had it a week so we’ll keep trying to train her or modify the ramp. Otherwise, it is very pretty, lots of room for her to roost and nest. The run is short. 72 inches in length. We love the real shingled slanted roof and the easy entrances for us to get in.

My husband made a 2 X 4 platform and nailed the coop to it so it wouldn’t rest directly on the dirt ground. This will probably help it last longer after rains. Also, we found it a lot difficult to put together as some of the pieces didn’t match the diagram, unlike other reviews that found it easy.

This coop came in two boxes, one with main coop, instructions, and bolts and screws, the other with nesting box and smaller pieces. My husband and I put the coop together in less than an hour. Husband said the instrustions were less then detailed but I put the structure together without it.

South Florida summer heat is awful so I’m blaming it on that! Overall the sturdiness, look, feel, and space is perfect for our 2 Reds. We could fit one more Red but I believe 3 would be max. 4 is stretching it but possible.

The roost is not ideal so that’s my only complaint, it’s a round rod close to the floor so we will be installing a 1×1 bar a little higher up for better grip and higher distance from floor. This is a perfect starter to 3 year coop and we will definitely purchase a larger one in the future!.

Got this for my bunny. He loves it! Came in many many pieces. I love putting things together. If you don’t, you won’t enjoy this assembly. The 3 access points to bunny are nice.

Wire is very thin and easily broken. Highly recommend replacing with 12” galvanized hardware cloth. For longevity definitely would recommend either sealing or painting the coop.

This cage is perfect to keep my cat out of my rabbit’s space. I have given it 4 stars because I am very pleased with this product in regards to the price, overall quality and look. I took one star because it is constructed of pine which is an attractive chewing opportunity for a rabbit.

This is a nice pen, although light weight, so not sure how long it will last out in the elements. I am using it for a baby tortoise run, and it will work well. Each panel must be screwed in, but the holes are already prepared, and you just have to line them up.

I used to have a similar pen that folded together for storage, but this one will have to be dismantled, so not as convenient. Each secion on either end of the pen opens, plus side doors open. A good pen for the cost.

This rabbit run fit perfectly in the space that I had for it. We have 2 American Fuzzy Lops. They are about 4 lbs each and this is plenty of room for them to run and jump around. Assembly was pretty easy.

Hint: Lay out all the panels in correct order first, because they are not labeled. So far very sturdy. We have 3 dogs and a very tenacious mini doxie and she can’t get to them. I would recommend this cage/run.

We recently bought a new home and needed to find a new coop for our chickens fast. After some shopping around, I bought the small OverEZ coop based on its sturdy-looking design and ease of assembly. Unfortunately it wasn’t worth the price tag, as there seem to be several quality control issues with it.

First, many of the pre-driven screws were bent and wouldn’t drive correctly, requiring me to replace them with my own. Also the “catch” for the nest box lock is so loose it won’t stay connected to the handle, making the locking mechanism completely useless.

I ended up screwing down the door so that predators can’t easily enter through there before I can find some other locking solution. In addition, the lock on the “man door” isn’t positioned correctly, so the door isn’t held flush when the door is locked–there is about 1/2″ of play.

It’s not enough to let a raccoon in, but still not ideal at all. The window also leaks (bad dealing), and the screen (which should be hardware cloth to be honest) came out within a week of putting the coop together.

There are other design flaws as well. I personally find the coop too small even for my three chickens, though I suppose if the chickens only sleep in it it is big enough. Otherwise, though, it’s too cramped to provide food and water while keeping them inside.

The “man door” is also very narrow, and cleaning out the coop is a real chore as a result. A full size door would be much more convenient for changing bedding. The roosting bars are only 2×2″, which is too narrow for chickens to comfortably stand with feet flat as they prefer.

It would be better to have 2×4″ perches with the 4″ side up instead. I went ahead and just screwed the provided 2x2s together to make one perch for my three birds. In the end, I feel that even with higher prices on lumber right now, it’s possible to build a much better coop for the same money or cheaper.

Unless you need a new coop fast and are willing to have to do a lot of fixing to make it work, I would steer clear of this one.

I bought this coop in September of 2021 in the brown and black colored version they sold temporarily. It definitely does not hold 15 chickens. Maybe 6-8 maximum. My 4 gals fit fine but this coop won’t hold 15 unless they are packed in there with no room to move.

The pieces were sturdy and it was fairly easy to assemble, though very heavy. We needed 3 strong people to lift each side. The front piece with the windows was not cut to the correct size and so we had to cut a piece of wood to cover a large gap in one side of the coop.

The roof arrived damaged; bent and scratched. The coop also must’ve been packed while the paint was still wet because removing the packaging caused lots of the paint to peel off, so I was glad it was shipped with extra cans of paint but slightly annoyed I had to repaint so much of a brand new coop.

It’s not easy to clean since there’s no removable pan and it’s too short to get inside to sweep it out, and I’m a pretty small person. If I had to do it over, I’d buy a shed from a box store like tractor supply and just add nesting boxes yourself.

It arrived damaged, with some phone calls they at least gave me a small refund for me to fix myself. My issue is that its not made like it used to be made. There are staples instead of screws, cheaper materials appear to be substituted from the original models in the videos online, It comes in a cardboard box not a wooden crate.

Its also not big enough for 15 birds. The roosting bars are too close together, even with adjusting them. You cannot just have 7-8″ from the wall and each bar the chickens will be dropping poo on each others backs and pecking each other.

I had to completely change the layout with roosts going across the entire floor space which means more frequent cleanings as they will be dropping where they are walking and this is for just 12 birds which is still too cramped.

I dread winter when they are not going to want to go outside as much. This coop should be marketed for less than 6 based on the roosting bar space and square feet (which isnt supposed to include nesting boxes).

Its very thin wood, it was not worth the price for convenience in my opinion, I wish we had just built one. Just be prepared for damage, to realize how much you are paying for convenience, and do not fit more than 6 birds in it (six can fit on one bar giving them the 12″ each they need) unless you modify the roosting bars and they are only using it to sleep/lay as it is way too cramped.

I compared many different coops as a posh new home for my four hens and I’m so pleased I decided on this one. Delivery was super fast and I had the whole thing built, singlehandedly in just a couple of hours.

It’s very well designed and very straightforward with pre-drilled pilot holes and clear instructions. Excellent quality materials and very roomy. My hens don’t need to spend a great deal of time in the run section as they are free to roam the garden but they are clearly happy with the space as they often pop back in just to have a scratch about.

Their living and laying accommodation is more than ample for them and the lift up roofs make it so easy to clean everywhere. I highly recommend this coop.

Certainly very happy with this hen house and coop. It looks great and is very well designed. Should be ideal for our 2 hens who will gain entry shortly, after I have laid down a wire mesh skirting to keep out Mr Fox.

Assembly wasn’t too difficult for the main part, just a couple of mistakes (e. g. getting keyhole on wrong side) but getting the roof on took longer than all the rest of it. Has to be a 2 person job, the roof needs held while the large hinges are fitted and if you can quickly see how these are fitted, you’ll save well over the 2 hours that it took us.

We had them on and off about 4 times (and the roof fell backwards breaking some of the wood) before we finally worked it out. In total then it took two of us about 3. 75 hours. The instructions are pictures only, no words, and a few words would have made all the difference.

I used the herbs and the zeolite absorbing minerals and it was incredible. The smell gone in one day . No ammonia smell . Just fresh . Makes raising baby chicks in the house pleasant .

We love this stuff. Our chickens love this stuff. Keeps the coop fresh and bug free. Absorbs moisture. Highly recommend.

I love these dried herbs for my nesting boxes. The girls love the fresh sent and it helped attract my young hens to the nesting boxes when they started laying. Love it!

I’ve had chickens under a year and have tended to a dog bite, prolapsed vent, and bumble foot. During that time, I used an old dog kennel as a sick bay. This coop is a huge upgrade to my sick bay / quarantine zone.

It is easier to clean and simply much more functional for chickens. Crazy enough, I found a chicken in a parking lot today. This coop is a great space for the chicken! It has space for it to walk around, peck the ground, and hide when it gets scared.

I have no idea how long this bird was out on it’s own, but this coop is now its safe place. I definitely recommend this coop. The only negative thing is I had to adjust the alignment of the latch on the nesting box to get it to latch.

It is easy to assemble & light enough to move around if need be. The removable tray makes it super easy to clean & the nesting box makes it easy to collect the eggs. The fact that it’s waterproof and has a raised perch helps protect my chicken from the weather.

Overall, it’s a great starter chicken coop.

[. ]Know that the instructions online are pretty useless. Read them. Most of them say “put together as picture shows” which isn’t very helpful. You just know the order of putting things together and that’s it.

If you don’t have a heavy-duty battery-powered drill, don’t bother. It’s a BUNCH of screws! Also, if you are doing this properly – know you will have about $200 worth of shingles and drip edge to purchase (required) and about 10 tubes of caulk ($3 each) + 2 cans of oil-based primer ($17 each) + any paint you want.

This does not come with steps. You’ll need to build those, as well. Time – it took 1 full day to get it together, another full day for shingles and caulking, another full day for painting. I like it’s size.

Easy to stand straight in and clean up. Very good size nesting boxes. (NOTE: If you live in climates that snow, you will want to build your own roof extension over the nesting box area; otherwise, you will have snow on top of them.

)The window, door/lock, vent, and chicken exit worked properly. (I did have to redo the latches, as they were not lined up, but that was easy. )When putting together the nesting boxes, it will talk about predrilled holes in the wood.

There were no pre-drilled holes. If you don’t predrill them yourself, the wood will split. Very durable. Will last a long time. I am SO GLAD I went larger. I will probably section off part of the left side to use as my chick hatchery in the spring.

It also is large enough to really have a heat lamp in it for winter usage. It’s large enough to also use as a good shed if you decide not to do chickens anymore.

We like the chicken coup very much, but the baby chicks don’t stand up. Every picture of the play set shows them standing up, online and all over the packaging, yet it’s virtually impossible to get them to stand on their own.

I feel like it’s a bit of false advertising in that regard. Otherwise it’s a great concept.

This is a really charming toy, and the special opportunity to purchase the coop and the chicken set was well worth it. It reminds me very much of the German toys we had as children. Well-made and fun! Now, if we can just keep our cats from stealing the chickens.

Very sturdy chicken coop! Kids love playing with the set. My one complaint is the small pieces, like the eggs, which do not stay contained in the coop and are easy to lose. It would also be nice if the coop latched closed.
