This is a very attractive set, with a very nice wooden box built in, for convenient storage & carrying. It is a metallic set so it was built to be played & durable to last forever. I know I will enjoy playing this set for along time.

I was beyond satisfied with this purchase. The craftsmanship was remarkable. He is truly a master of is craft. I was extremely thrilled to see the personal message engraving as an option. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t make it here in time for my wife’s birthday but it was sent out and delivered surprisingly fast.

I think it looks beautiful as it looked on the photo. Just wished that the edges were more mended because its still very sharp and one of the squares is slightly off and crooked (but im being picky though).

Not a huge deal but people with OCDs will be bothered. And one of the drawers doesn’t close all the way as well. And it a lot lighter than I expected but overall looks beautiful.

Unfortunately I got pieces that were very poorly weighted, and it the only thing I regret about the entire purchase. The board is beautiful and has no flaws. Nothing over the top, has small pads underneath so if its on a smooth surface it wont slide, and the wood choice and grain isnt distracting or ostentatious, so great for studying and playing both.

Just what I expected. Has a distinctive look with no border, and a nice solid feel. Comes with thin felt dots on the bottom. Works great on our glass coffee table.

The board looks decent and well made, but unintentional drop of a piece even at only 2 feet could put a dent on the surface and time will tell if its durable enough not to fade.

Most chess sets fall into a spectrum from the boring to the baroque. I have been searching for a long time for a high quality wooden set that matches the aesthetic of my eclectic modern home. The Umbra wobble was a great find for me.

The board is well finished with no mismatched edges or rough seams. The pieces are well-weighted, simple without being austere, and easy to distinguish (some modern sets fail on this, with pieces that are too similar making them pretty to look at but a pain to play).

It is a great addition to my game room and I can picture it ageing gracefully over the next decades. I’m veyr happy with this purchase.

I bought the chess set almost a month ago. The quality of the items is excellent. Not only it is quite fun to play with it, but also its elegant features match the modern atmosphere of our living room.

The only negative part is that the box of the product was ripped when we received it. We thought it was not quite important at that point, but I think they should be more careful about its box and the shipping company, too.

I ordered this for my grandmother to give my uncle for Christmas. He loved it so much. We weren’t expecting such great quality for the price. He loves chess and collects them as well. After all these years and the different ones he has he said by far this is the best one yet.

Its magnetic which is what I was looking for so we can play this while traveling, camping, on the bed, picnic table etc. However, the magnets are so weak the pieces barely stick to the board. And I mean barely as in dont accidentally bump the board or sneeze as the pieces will fall over and roll away.

Its not much better that a regular board to be honest.

This is a beautiful and durable chess set and board. My wife does not play chess but loves it on our coffee table as an art piece. I love playing the game especially with this set!

I bought this for my husband who brought a beautiful chess set from Denmark to the UK 20 years ago, but we never had a board to use it. This surpassed my hopes he would be thrilled with it on Xmas morning, it is perfect, in fact a stunning piece of workmanship, even down to the makers name carved in to the back.

He loves it, and we are very happy indeed. Now to the nitty gritty of who will win the game after so long :). Thank you Farrer & Tanner.

Absolutely lovely chess board (Helena black wood/mother of Pearl). First one had a small surface flaw but customer service were excellent and a replacement arrived very quickly. Good company and great service.

The chess board is beautiful. A work of art. Beautiful to look at and a perfect gift. It arrived quickly and safely and even has its own bag to keep it safe if not put out ready for play. Very pleased with it.

The set itself is decent; however, it does not look anything like the main photo (looks like the second photo). Additionally, the description says 17 inch board but this is 11 inches. Also, the pieces are nowhere near as tall as the description states.

Finally, even though the pieces are magnetic as described, the magnet under the pieces are not strong enough and the pieces would still shift if not played on a completely stable surface.

I ordered several games and this is the first one I received. It arrived in perfect condition inside a box with paper. The game box itself has a manufacturers plastic wrap, which is great for protecting the box corners, etc (very nice especially for gift giving).

The game board folds and snaps closed to store the game pieces inside. There is a slight magnetism to it which aids in keeping pieces put. The pieces are good for small and large hands. There is a brief instruction sheet with a small image of the set up of pieces to the board.

My only con would be the instruction sheet because for new players, the image is very small/faint and we don’t know what a rook is or which is the bishop and so on. I did set it up correctly but I also went online to view images to make sure I did.

I’ve always wanted to learn to play chess. Better late than never. Games are rather pricey today and this one worthy of the present $14 price point. It’s especially good for children and for those such as myself, just learning to play.

Additionally, I believe its good for everyone wanting a simple chess set for home or away. I’m very pleased with it.

This is a perfect starter set to use as you learn the placement and moves. The magnetic feature is excellent and keeps you from spilling your board as your arm and hand move around. It is well made, for the money, and the pieces easy to handle.

The board sits flat with no ridge in the middle. The one thing that would have been nice is if the board had a carrying strap. it does not. Once closed up, you have to carry it like a box.

This was an OK book. Make sure you realize that you need a scroll saw to make the pieces. There are quite a few big power tools you need to make the projects in this book. I. e. scroll saw, table saw, router table, jointer/planer maybe.

I was able to make the regular chess board, but with several modifications.

This is a great book. I first made the jig as shown and it made all the difference. Swinging a jig instead of the small piece on the saw is a very smooth process. I made the classic and the pieces look exactly like the cover photo.

This was a “keepsake” project requested by my grandson and he should be very pleased with the results. A nice experience.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my oldest son. Both him and my younger son have started to play. They are very competitive! As younger brothers are, he lost pieces to the chess set they would play with.

So I got my older son a set of his own and he loves it. They play with this one at home and I love to see them doing something other than fighting. Problem solved. (Little brother set was replaced as well and we now have fighting again, who’s set they are going to play with.

My seven year old just discovered chess. He was very interested so we went to the local WalMart to get him his own chess set. Two different games were available. This one for about $25. 00 and another plastic set for about ten dollars.

I let him choose. He elected to buy the more expensive “nicer” set. All the way home he talked about his new chess set, the kid was really excited and happy. Well, we got home and opened the set. Poor quality.

I would not have paid more than one dollar at a thrift store or flea market or yard sale. The board was chipped, didn’t line up, color, stains are ugly, just plain junk if you ask me. Going back tomorrow for a plastic set and if that is junk we’ll play online.

It’s possible we got a bad set. It’s possible we didn’t. Wayyyyyyyyyy toooooooo much money for poor quality.

Love this chess set! Perfect for beginners to learn the game while familiarizing themselves with the pieces of the game. Easy to transport as it folds nicely with the pieces inside. Would definitely recommend this set.

The pieces are mismatching in size. And they wobble and are not sturdy. Get it for the board which Is nice for $16 at most. But you’ll have to buy new pieces.

Recently, in a conversation with his sister, my husband told me that she was hoping to purchase the above item for her granddaughter for Christmas! Well, she lives in Pittsburgh, while we live in Florida! I told him i would try to find the item online.

After visiting the local Target to see what their availability was, I went online and purchased what I had seen in the store! And, to my surprise, shipping was free! My husband’s sister, who is homebound, was absolutely delighted with our efforts to help her with a small part of her Christmas shopping! It was easy for us!.

My 10 year old son opened the gift Christmas morning ready to start our Holiday Chess tournament and the glass board was broken. The Chess pieces have felt bottoms, most all of which fell off as we removed the pieces, they are thin and flimsy, not easily re-attached, 32 new thicker felts would need to be purchased and glued on for smooth board play.

Some pieces had sharp, rough, glass edges, almost unsafe for the tips of your fingers, mainly rooks and queens.

I used to play chess on the custom made chess table, but that is very expensive and takes just too much space, which is unreasonable for an amateur or even semi-professional player. This board is the best alternative, that can turn any flat surface to the professional tournament quality playing area.

Never again I’ll use “mousepad” or “vinil” boards, these is just too inferior to playing on the real wooden chess board. I think I have got extra 200 ELO points when I play on this board =).

A beautiful professional board. It is finely crafted. The finishing is delicate and needs to be handled with care to avoid dents. Due to this, and the fact that it is heavier than the portable boards, it is preferable to keep in one site.

I have absolutely no complaints about this board. The woodwork is better than I expected for the price and my wife absolutely loves it. It is made in Poland, which is wonderful since it seems most other boards are garbage from either China or India.
