20 Best Women’S Boots For Ice (2023 Updated)

It’s about time I write a review since Ive had them for years. Ive had the black boots since 2016 and the brow/ Elk, Black since 2020. Best winter boots I’ve had. We have a lot of shoveling to do here in Chicago in winter.

I wore these shoveling snow with NO socks and kept my feet warm. My brother and father both have worn them outside to shovel snow since they don’t have winter boots lol. the black had bought those in size 12 Thinking I would need to double up my socks but I did not have to.

The bigger size did help years later for when my diabetes swelled my feet bad. I still wear them and have used them hiking now that my feet are no longer swollen. I wear these for hiking in the snow.

Hiked at starved rock in the cold in December 2021 and also saw another girl using them to hike in the same group hike. I have some snow cleats and the cleats fit good on my boots since they are not bulky.

They are also pretty light for winter boots which make exploring/hiking with them nice. I also ride my motorcycle with them on on the cold days here in Chicago. I wore them to the Toys for TOTS. Which my feet have gotten a little cold since my feet are not moving and it does not activate the heat system in the boot.

So, I don’t count that against the boots. These boots are my go to for winter/cold activities. I do love these boots and would definitely buy again once they wear out.

My wife loves the aesthetically pleasing look and feel of her White and Black Baffin Icefield -100°C (-148°F) Polar Bear Approved Boots. My review today just happens to coincide with International Polar Bear Day honouring Ursus Maritmus (Maritime Bear) often called Ice Bears due to their habitat being mostly Ice and snow.

I’m pleased to review that these lightweight boots allow the agility to move freely on the snow and ice. I’m not sure if you would outrun a Polar Bear wearing them, but confident to say the polar bears would be curious where they could get their paws on these awesome boots.

Wearing a thin HELLY Hansen base layer polypropylene sock and a second pair of Polar F4547 HELLY HANSEN socks resulted in warm feet after spending a full day outside in extreme cold Winter frigid conditions riding snowmobile.

These boots get a thumbs up in mittens excellent in -40°C (-40°F ) True North Tested in the Polar region of Canada. I realize it says -100° C maybe exaggeration. The fit as for sizing is as follows: Size 9.

5 Women’s order size 10 Baffin Icefield boot. If you order order one full size larger than your size the heel of your foot moves up and down the rear of the boot lining. Summary get the boot size closest to your foot size and your foot will mild itself in these boots.

I bought these for fieldwork in Nunavik, QC in the winter, and I still have all 10 toes. They kept my feet cool, not frozen, but not particularly warm on the -37C wind chill day when I wasn’t moving much.

They were toasty through about -30C, and dry when collecting water samples which is what I really wanted. I bought a size up and they fit well with 2 pairs of wool socks. I think they are true to size, but I wanted to wear extra thick socks.

I wore them with toe warmers which really helped when standing still outside working. I imagine if you are always moving they would keep your feet warm at much colder temperatures than I experienced.

I would buy them again.

I’m feeling a bit like Don Quixote in my search for a replacement to my old Musher boots by Baffin. The liners are shot and the style has been discontinued. Baffin has superior products IF you can find the right size.

There doesn’t seem to be any consistency in sizes from style to style. My old boots are a 7. Based on reviews about sizes running small, I bought an 8. Too small. I really wanted the Impact boot, which is very similar to the Musher.

Baffin was sold out of the Impact but I found it at another website. I bought a 9 in that boot. Way too big. I’ve now spent $50 in return shipping charges and have no idea what size to get in a Baffin boot.

As I previously stated, Baffin boots are superior and will keep your feet warm and dry. My old ones are over 10 years old so we’ll worth the initial investment. I just don’t understand why Baffin’s sizing is so wacko.

I’m a guy who loves my Merrell Moab 2’s, but couldn’t find what I was looking for in a winter boot from them. I wanted something in the same style, but 8″ or taller, warm and not solid black. Couldn’t find anything in the men’s to fit the bill (Chill Shell looked closest, but they were a little short, and I couldn’t actually find any.

) Saw these in granite (gray/black, not solid black) and thought, “I like the style. Why not try it?” I wear a men’s 9. 5 in Moab 2’s, so I ordered a women’s 11 (biggest size that they offered. ) The good: They fit perfectly.

I thought they might be narrow, but they were plenty wide, even when wearing thick socks. Definitely roomier than my men’s Moab 2’s. They’re warmer than my Keen snow boots. With one small exception (see below), the softly hug my feet.

I love the way the look. The so-called “women-specific gel” (I’m a little insulted for them) over the toes does actually help trap heat to keep them warm. The bad: The laces slide so easily, that it can be hard to keep them tight as tie them (solution below.

) The fold of fabric under the zipper that allows it to open is sometimes noticeable on my ankle (it doesn’t bother me for long. ) The purple next to the zipper is totally different than that of the laces.

It’s brighter and more pink, whereas the laces are a nice dark, bluish purple. The laces, I’ll keep, but the zipper stripe may get sharpied over. The interesting: My heel is pretty big (you might say bulbous), so I can’t get my foot out with just the zipper open, when the boot is tied tightly.

So, I do undo the laces at the very top, along with the zipper. Now, I actually overcome the slippery laces issue by tying them before zipping them up when I put them on. It makes them perfectly tight.

The small sandpaper like patches on the tread are good for traction in the winter, but they do warn you that it can damage floors. Because I wear them inside my pants, not over, the little loops at the back get bent back, pushing out the leg of my pants.

They may get snipped off. All-in-all, I love my Rheas. I might even buy a pair in olive. Merrell should definitely make a men’s version.

I just received these in the mail. I have been searching for a waterproof snow boot that will be comfortable, but most of the higher end manufacturers seem to be making boots that are too narrow in the toe area.

I don’t have wide feet, but have been having issues with the winter boots I’ve been trying on to be too tight in that area. They also seem to be making boots much smaller overall. I normally wear a size 7 in a sneaker or regular shoe.

I move up to a 7. 5 in a fashion boot since I like to wear a little bit thicker sock. However, I had to purchase a size 8. 5 in this style to get a good fit. I find that in very cold temperatures, I don’t want a super snug fit because it makes my feet colder.

A slightly looser fit will make for a little more air in heavier socks to provide more insulation for the foot. These boots in a size 8. 5 were a perfect fit for that purpose. I did purchase insoles from Merrill just in case they were a little too roomy, but I really don’t need them with a good thick sock on.

I almost didn’t buy these because I read some reviews that said that the zipper rubbed on their ankle and caused blisters. I haven’t worn them yet, but with just trying them on, I don’t feel that. Of course I do wear thick socks and will be wearing long underwear when I want to wear these boots, so I may not have that issue at all.

I really wanted some very functional boots that were comfortable and cute at the same time and it looks like I’ll be achieving those goals in this particular boot.

I purchased this boot for winter walking. The outsole appears to be a great design to avoid slips and falls. The comfort is good from what I was able to tell from a try-on of one boot. The first pair I received had a zipper that would not pull down.

I returned them for an exchange with an explanation of the issue. I received a second pair that had obvious signs of being tried on before with scuffs on the outer sole. The zipper would not unzip on the second pair I received.

The is unacceptable quality control for $200. 00 boots and a company that has an admired reputation. Don’t waste your time or your money. We should be able to expect better from Merrell.

I always buy Kamik boots for my kids and they are good quality and last a long time (until they outgrow them) and never had any issues with warmth or wetness, etc. So when I needed a new pair of winter boots for myself, I seriously considered Kamik along with Pajar, Ugg, and Merrell.

I hate my Sorels so I didn’t consider them at all. These boots are cute and fine, but they do seem more cheaply made than my kids’ boots. Threads are kinda loose along seams in the fabric of the “tongue” and the lacing system doesn’t do the trick to tightly close the boot because of all the fluff and fur on the inside.

The bottom of the boot inside is very flat (no arch support) and no matter what socks I wear with these boots THE SOCKS ALWAYS COME OFF either while I’m still wearing the boots or when I take the boots off, the socks come off with them! I hate that.

Nothing drives me crazier than a sock coming off inside a boot! They are not easy to get on and off at all because of this. Maybe once theyre worn in a bit and the fluff inside gets flattened, it will stop happening, but.

I’m not excited about these boots like I wanted to be. I should’ve shelled out for the Uggs snow boots.

I found these while searching for a pair of long lasting waterproof snow proof winter boots. I have to say I’m very picky about boots, so when I got these, I was a little disappointed to see they didn’t have a side zipper, but that’s my fault for not reading thoroughly.

The description says leather and suede upper, but that’s only the stripe, the actual majority of the boot is a soft canvas, which isn’t what I was looking for. I wasn’t a huge fan of the shape of them, as they seem to accentuate the widest point of my calf, but overall they’re very nice and they fit well when I tried them on.

They are thick inside so they might feel tight with a thick sock, but they were immediately super warm so a thick sock doesn’t seem really necessary. I haven’t worn them in snow or water, so I can’t speak to that.

I most likely will exchange these for a pair of Merrell tall lace Polar boots that I had wanted but were out of stock.

I was looking for a nice sort of looking boot, but one that was a lot more functional and practical for outdoor winter activities. These have been pretty good so far! I’ve used them for ice fishing and general walking the dog, sledding etc in Ontario 0 to -30 so far and my feet haven’t gotten cold yet.

Great grip on them too which was a significant improvement from my other boots anyway. Tested them on icy frozen sidewalks and roads as well as slushier weather, feet have stayed dry so far. I would recommend to maybe buy half a size up if you can.

I like to wear two pairs of socks cotton and wool especially on colder days and found it a bit snug, but I am slowly trying to stretch them out.

The boots look small when taken out of the box, but when on, the sizing seems right to me. Although I live in the US, I have found European shoe sizes to be more consistent. I looked for an EU 41, which is the same as a US woman’s 10.

My feet are a bit wide but not super long, and these fit perfectly. The arch support seems somewhat less than other shoes I have, but not enough to cause any issue. They look like a logging boot and a Louboutin fell in love and created a highly functional, warm, and cute snow boot.

The boots have been comfortable to walk all day in, with no break-in period required. The pair I received look exactly like the photo. The boots seem completely watertight up to the bottom of the laces, but I’m finding a little dampness can seep in there.

I quickly bought a heated boot dryer, so the liner can be fully dried overnight. I like them best with a slim leg jean, which can be tucked into the top of the boot to keep the pant leg dry. Warm, dry feet are so important for winter happiness.

These boots were exactly what I wanted.

I’m only giving these a 4 because I think there needs to be a little more education around sizing in the description. I can wear sizes 8. 5-10 depending on the shoe, but frequent the 9-9. 5 range in most cases.

After reading the reviews for these boots, I was torn between 9. 5 & 10. I think it’s important to note, I’m not a thick sock wearer, rather would wear no socks. but for the sake of winter boots, thin pair of socks usually work out perfect for me.

Most of the reviews here tell you to go up in size, but because I live in Chicago, it’s important to have almost a size too small for winter boots. That room between top of toes and your toes will make or break you sliding on ice, truly.

When I got the 9. 5, I tried them on and immediately wished I got the 10, but then I brought myself back to reality and had to consider functionality. If you are buying these for winter purposes, rather than aesthetics.

I’d highly suggest your true size, at most a. 5 size up. SNUG IS SAFER.

Bought these for my trip to Iceland in March and they worked perfectly. I’ve bought plenty of Keen’s throughout the years and these did not disappoint me. They were comfortable out of the box, no problems at all with rubbing or anything.

I don’t agree with those that said the toe box is small, though it is smaller than other Keen’s I have worn. I do believe the smaller toe box is by design, less air inside means warmer feet. Keeping warm is, in my opinion, not on the boots, especially this type of boot.

The key to warm feet is correctly sized boots and the correct sock(s)–using liners and wool socks is key! I’ve also read a lot of reviews on this and other sites about these not being waterproof, but that was not my experience at all.

For extra protection, I did apply waterproofing spray before my trip (always a good practice IMO), but I walked through fairly deep puddles without a thought and was impressed with completely dry and warm feet.

Highly recommend these boots (assuming they fit your feet correctly, of course).

I have been looking for the perfect winter boot and I found it! So far it has kept my feet warm and dry in conditions as cold as single digits. The boots is as comfortable as sneakers and feels great as I chase around after my kids.

The traction is enough for walking in the snow but not enough on icy grounds. On icy days I just slip on my snowtrax over the boot. I tie the laces a little loose so I can easily slide my feet in and out of the boot on the go.

I tie them tighter if I am wearing them walking through the snow or wet conditions. Most of all, I like the look. The boots are light and doesn’t feel bulky. I wear a size 5. 5, and the length and fit is perfect.

These boots are really comfortable. I’m the type of person who will wear something for ages and ages until it’s physically impossible to do so any longer, so I have pretty high standards. I needed good warm, snowproof winter boots to wear in the snowy mountains of Oregon.

My feet get cold easily. I’ve started helping out with my son’s ski races at the base on occasion, but the last time I did so in my old ‘Duck’ boots, my feet were soo cold they hurt, hence this purchase.

I researched all the boots out there and was hoping these would be my solution, but after 4 hours standing on packed snow in 30°F or lower with 2 pairs of socks on, my feet (toes especially) were freezing! Granted I wasn’t walking around much.

I do like the look and they are super cozy. felt like walking on a cushion, so I want to give them another try. Honestly, there may not be any boots that could keep my feet warm unless they’re heated.

I honestly think that if I was using them to go for a walk in the winter, they’d be great! So my next venture will be taking them snowshoeing and see if my feet are still cold.

Bought a pair for my Special needs daughter. It’s been a trial trying to find her winter boots that not only are easy for her to put on, that actually fit, and that she’s comfortable with. The other pair that we’d gotten her, although cuter even after I’d modified them so she could put them on, are rarely worn since she’s gotten these.

She can’t zip them all the way up because her feet are just too fat and I’ve cautioned her about breaking the zipper. And I’m not sure why she doesn’t activate the ice grips on the bottom because that was one of the main reasons I choose these.

She hates walking on any slippery surface.

The boots are lovely but are too small in size. I purchased a size 9 W but I really should have ordered a size larger since these boots did not come in 1/2 sizes. I would have returned them but with the shipping price for returning, it wasn’t worth it.

So, I donated them to Vietnam Vets. I am sure someone will be able to wear these.

These boots are the ideal solution for someone with certain physical disabilities, as well as the average person. Some of the negative reviews caused me to hesitate making this purchase, but I’m so glad I did.

I normally wear a Womens Wide width shoe/boot size 9, but that was not an available option. I decided to order the size 9 anyway, but unfortunately it felt snug and uncomfortable in the toe area. I called Customer Service to see if I should order the next size up, or a Mens 9.

The representative took the time to ask her supervisor and look up more specific info about the boots. Although there wasn’t any additional info given from the manufacturer, it was decided that perhaps the Mens size 9 would be slightly wider.

I ordered it and sure enough, it fit perfectly. As luck would have it, a week after my boots arrived (the second pair), I found the same boots with the wide width, additional color option and $5 less, in a different mail-order catalog.

They do have very good traction and are easily cleaned. One concern of these boots was the very intense rubber smell. It has the same smell as a store selling tires and therefore, needed to be aired out an entire week before taking on my trip.

I placed a Dr. Scholls pad on the inside for better comfort.

The durability of these boots is unbelievable. I wear a shoe size of 71/2 so I sized down to a 7 as recommended. They fit perfect with room for a thicker sock if I need it. They are insulated nicely , so I will have to see what will work best when winter arrives.

The downfall, for me is that they are heavy. That is a small price to pay for warmth and quality in bad weather. They have a loop in the back to slip on standing. I’m 5’3 and they reach within 3 inches of my knee cap.

I do recess duty at school so it will help with the wind for a shorter jacket. The checkered pattern is classy, but I wanted the pink accent style but they were sold out. Still happy with the pair that I bought.

The traction is hard core and I won’t trip for being 50 and easily swayed by drifts and obstacles. Don’t know about running through drifts but they won’t fall off if I need to run from something HA HA! I’m so glad I bought these and won’t hesitate to walk through mud, slush, hard snow, or ice spots.

I could go on and on and will purchase a shorter pair when I can.

These are some of the most comfortable boots you will ever wear. As soon as I slipped them on i knew I wouldn’t need much to break them in and after the first day of wearing them it was like daI’d been wearing them forever.

Definitely a good addition to heavier weather but can be worn year round they’re just a tad heavier than a usual boot in that they have more traction and a slightly thicker sole.

After reading several reviews for these across the ‘net, I decided The North Face Shellista II Mid Boot was the boot for me in terms of waterproofing, durability, grip, comfort, and warmth. Several reviews, however, mention that the sizing runs SMALL.

This is TRUE! And I say this as someone who struggles to find a women’s size 5 shoe that isn’t too big for me (I wish there was a size 4. 75, because 4. 5 is too small!). I am a grown adult woman, but my feet are baby feet, tiny and narrow.

I took a gamble and ordered the size 6 based on the reviews (and the fact that it’s the smallest size available anywhere!) and they fit PERFECTLY with thick wool socks. In fact, my big toes are about 1/2 – 3/4 inch from hitting the front walls.

For comparison, my size 5 Adidas sneakers are almost the same size as these. They feel great after a test drive walking around my neighborhood. I am yet to test drive them in the snow, but I’ll say that my feet were running HOT walking 20 minutes in Southern California 55 degree winter temps.

Looking forward to putting them to the real test in snowy New England in a few weeks! I feel confident they’ll be great!.

Bought a pair in size 6 (my usual shoe size) for a snowshoeing trip and they were great. I was initially concerned about how my toes felt mildly compressed due to the rubber construct of the toe area, especially when worn with thick wool socks since I have wide feet.

I tried a size 6. 5 for comparison and the heel felt too loose so I kept the size 6 with hesitation. However, when I wore them and went snowshoeing, it performed well! The toe area was not an issue, my toes got only mildly cold, and overall felt comfortable throughout the hike.

I suspect it’s not roomy enough for me to fit toe warmers, but for 30 degrees Tahoe weather the boots were warm enough for me. I was also unsure whether the mid-calf coverage would be too much stiffness for hiking up hills, but it was not bothersome at all.

The calves did get a little too warm at times which I resolved by layering less in the legs the next day.

Great boots but don’t keep your feet very warm. They also fold at the back of the heel where the rubber and the boot meats. I am in northern Minnesota, and there are definitely better boots that are less stylish you could order.

I chose these because I wanted them to be relatively cute plus have warmth to them! Overall a decent boot, but if you’re not wearing the right socks your feet will freeze. I ordered a size up and probably only needed a half size bigger if anything.

They are waterproof until snow makes it way through the top of you boot which then creates damp socks & feet. They’re relatively lightweight which is a plus but I feel like that feeds into your feet getting so cold so quickly.

I’m sure they will last a long time, but if you’re looking for a real winter boot for long term use I wouldn’t say this is the boot you’re looking for.

They are quite stiff at first but as you walk in them, they break in nicely. They are very comfortable and definitely warm! I had zero issues with warmth riding in 0 degree weather. The quality is great and they seem like they’ll hold up to abuse! They are also quite protective, a buddy decided to run over my foot and I didn’t really feel it.

I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase these boots!.

Had the boots a few months now, was out again yesterday plowing snow after our fourth storm in a row. Also assisted a neighbor who had gotten his side by side stuck in deep snow, was up to my waist in snow getting him towed out and the boots functioned perfectly.

Feet were never cold, wet or tired or sore. Highly recommend these boots.

Don’t buy these boots. They don’t last. Used 6 times snowmobiles and already falling apart. I had my klim boots for 9 years and still look like new. Don’t waste your money. Will be sending back for warranty.

Would rather have a refund.

I like them so much this was my second purchase of black and third as a whole. I have the white pair too!

The two star rating is simply me being generous the boots are super cute but they don’t last at all within a couple of weeks water was going through mine they even tore up super quickly so not worth the money.

I live in WIsconsin and last year slipped on the ice and dislocated my shoulder. For this winter I was determined to find a better way to negotiate Ice and snow. I had tried strap on spikes but they are a pain to keep on and take off.

My research led me to discovering Icebug brand boots. The reviews seemed to be too good to be true. The boots were also pricey. I decided I’d order a pair of Metro2’s. The order process was smooth and the boots arrived on time.

I ordered my regular size and they fit perfectly. I have had several opportunities to use the boots this winter and I am impressed with the performance. The boots perform well outside and I am comfortable wearing them into a store.

Despite the spikes, the boots perform well on hard indoor surface including my garage floor. You won’t be able to sneak up on anybody as the are quite load on hard surfaces but the traction is good. I am told that the metal spikes last several years and that the company will replace them should it be needed.

These boots are great and I highly recommend them!.

I wore my new boots for the first time yesterday on hard snowy trails in the local park. Loved the traction and how my legs felt relaxed like I was walking on a summer trail! I had to walk to the park on clear sidewalks and was worried that the cleats would be slippery on a hard surface.

The boots did not slip at all! The cleats make a bit of sound on the pavement but it was easy to talk and hear in spite of the crunch. I’m trying to talk my husband to getting a pair! My left foot is a bit larger than my right one.

So I ordered the boots to fit the larger foot exactly. But the boots were too small so I ordered a one size larger pair. They fit perfectly with a wool sock. The delivery was amazingly fast. And it was easy to return the small pair.

They made it back to Sweden in less than a week! And the best of all, the manufacturing process is environmentally friendly! Considering everything this is a fabulous investment in great outdoor wear and in the environment!.

If the shoes had fit well, I suspect I would have liked them a lot. The grip on the sole felt great, they’re easy to get on and off, pretty color and the style is cute (by winter footwear standards!) They look durable and waterproof.

However, in ordering what they call a 10. 5 shoe, I got a fit that was not only a touch too long (surprising for how 10. 5 shoes typically fit me) but also MASSIVELY wide around the heel and throughout the foot everywhere except across the ball of the foot, where the fit was snug.

In other words, the boot’s last fit like a giant rectangle, whereas my foot, anyway, is a more triangular shape apparently. It was so big around heel and foot generally that I knew even thick socks couldn’t save me, so back they went.

I commute a mile on foot to work in Minnesota, so I need a great fit in a walking snow boot. Maybe I should have then tried a 10, but the width issues were significant enough for me that I’m guessing the overall cut of their lasts just won’t work for my foot.

The first time I saw these boots, I was quite taken by the sleek upper offset by the bold outsole lines. Brought a 7. 5 pair home with me, my usual size, after trying both the 7 and 8 as I always do, just in case.

The clean lines of this design meant these boots paired well with just about everything, and they became my primary footwear for the 2-3 days per week I am out of the house on full-day to-do lists. I loved hearing ice crunch under the hefty rubber outsoles – every bit of that crunching was one more instance of me *not* slipping on the ice anymore.

I never did slip on ice again after getting the Joan of Arctic – adore the name, though amused that the name’s been recycled through several rather different designs. After the first day of wear, I noticed my feet aching more than normal.

I shrugged it off, thinking I was just feeling it more due to staying in last week, though I’d gone several weeks without extensive foot activity before and never felt this odd aching. After day two, the aching became louder.

My three days of activity came to an end, and the weekdays of working on the laptop started, as did throbbing in my feet. The next weekend, the ache flared again after the first day – except more apparent, sharper.

By the end of the second day that week, I couldn’t tell if I was experiencing an ache or a sharp pain. Day three, I started suspecting my Sorels could be the actual issue, because lifting my feet came with pain that made me wince.

I went through a month and a half of 2-3 days each week before I was able to replace the Joan of Arctic a month ago. By then, the pain at the top of my Sorels was so unbearable that I cut days short and opted out of days where possible to avoid additional aggravation of the inflamed areas.

Even so, my weeks were spent consciously spent easing the pain and walking with a conscious level of effort to minimize excessive movement in avoiding stress to the top of my feet. The pain was so bad that I found myself repeatedly adjusting my leg and foot placement in bed trying to ease pain enough to eventually fall asleep.

It’s been four weeks since I’ve replaced these Sorels with a similar style from another brand, and I have not had a single flareup since. I became worried enough after figuring out the issue that I looked up extensor tendonitis to ensure that an experience did not create potential for relapse.

My feet are still very much in recovery and make sure I’m aware of that fact every now and then – the reason I remembered at the end of April 2022 to write this review I meant to write when ice and snow were still covering every inch of Minnesota ground.

Important facts to note regarding my complaint: My shoe size was correct. The shoe was not too narrow – I did not need a 7. 5W. I wore one pair of socks in regular thickness, so there was no excessive bulking to cause this stress point.

I don’t have an abnormally high foot. The top of the shoe was simply too low. I’ve owned far too many pairs of fashion, rain, and snow boots over the years to count, including Sorels, and have literally never experienced anything like this.

The shoe quality was as expected of Sorel. I adore the sleek styling, and the fact that these defied any sheet of ice was why I kept wearing them while trying to understand what was causing my growing foot pain.

One thing for sure now – the next time I ever experience this kind of pain again, I’ll walk in flipflops on ice if I have to before subjecting myself to this extensive recovery period again. Lesson learned – the top of my feet are still aching enough for me to consciously register it without seeking to even now.

I have tried many boots on the market, and the Lowa Renegade Ice GTX are the most comfortable boots I have owned, definitely an upgrade from my old Merrell Chameleon Thermo 8 Waterproof Winter Boots.

I wore these Lowa boots right out of the box with no break in period. The extra tall shaft provides extra protection and yet is flexible when you move, well done! The Arctic Winter grip works reasonably well on “FLAT” ice surfaces, but I would recommend wearing Microspikes for longer hikes if possible.

Remember, even winter “ice/snow” tires will slip a bit; winter tires help slow you down, but they are not a cure for slippery black ice. In terms of size, you always need to go up when buying winter boots.

I went up a full size to accommodate very thick winter socks (Sealskinz Extreme Winter socks) and it works just fine, there is enough room in the toe box. Remember footwear is very personal, try different brands and different sizes to accommodate your specific feet.

Overall, I am very pleased with these boots. They are very supportive and have a nice stiff rocker type sole to help with rough terrain (my personal preference). If you want a flexible sole in your winter boot, then this boot is not for you.

Construction seems top notch. Of course only time will tell if it puts up with the miles of abuse, but they seem solid. As expected, you don’t get much (if any) traction on ice regardless of whatever vibram sole they throw on there.

You will still need crampons or cleats for ice on the trails. As for warmth I have been hiking in -30°C with just a pair of medium merino hiking socks and my feet have always been comfortable and warm but never hot.

If you are just standing around though you might start to feel the cold, but they are meant for cold weather hiking so in that regard I feel the insulation is perfect. And with that in mind I feel the most impressive feature is that these boots feel very light on the feet at around 680g each, very nice! As for sizing, I usually take a 10.

5US but I got an 11 based on other reviews. They do feel a little snug when you first put them on but after hiking in them a bit I would say they are close to true size but to allow a slightly thicker sock I’m fine with going up half a size and they feel comfortable like that.

All in all a solid boot for winter hiking and they feel military grade but you will still need crampons on the ice!.

I need a boot for walking, hiking, and snowshoeing in North Dakota, USA, that is good in subzero Fahrenheit temps (-17. 7C and below). My first snowshoe afternoon with them was -14F/-25C with light wind.

These did not keep me warm, even though I had heavy socks and foot warmers in. The foot warmers got barely warm because the boots insulation/waterproofing kept out all oxygen (so, in this case, the insulation/waterproofing is a pro and con).

I was only out for a couple of hours, but couldn’t afford to dally. Had to keep on the move as my toes were just uncomfortable enough to not allow for studying tracks etc. Above 0F/-18C I think these will be fine.

Note: These run narrow, which is why I like Lowa boots, but wider feet will have trouble with these. Also, I have Lowa hiking boots in 11. 5 men’s that fit great. However, I had to originally return the 11.

5 in this winter boot and order up. The insulation takes up some room and the toe box was tight. The 12 allows my toes to sit back from the front of the boot without crowding.

I bought a pair of these boots last year & have been impressed with how warm they keep my feet while I do my horse chores in the winter. I like that they are truly waterproof and the top can be tightened to keep hay out.

I bought my daughter a pair just recently when she complained that her feet were cold while she was caring for her horse and walking her dog. She has also been impressed by the warmth. What we don’t like is the lack of structure/support.

The sole is very flexible and if the ground is uneven there is absolutely no support so what usually happens is my foot just slips right off the foot bed. It’s like walking in a flip flop. If you want warm feet these are the boots for you.

Just don’t expect to go on a hike.
