I was on the search (and still am) for a pair of gloves that could keep me warm and be DURTABLE enough to keep up. I was hopeful that First Lite’s “ultimate cold-weather hunting glove” would be the answer.
I started hunting in the mountains of Wyoming when I was a kid and I am 34 now. I currently hunt in the Rockies in Colorado. This was my first experience working with First Lite. Everything about these gloves listed on the website had me excited.
I thought the price tag was a little steep, but I had always heard good things about First Lite and figured it was a small price in the scheme of things. Especially when it comes with a “lifetime warranty”.
“We will replace any piece that’s performance in the field has been compromised by a manufacturer’s defect for the practical lifespan of the garment. ” – First Lite Website When I first received the gloves I was impressed by the dexterity in the hands.
The “leather” material seemed thin, but I had faith in First Lite to provide a quality product. The first couple of uses for these gloves was walking my dogs in a couple snow storms. There’s no doubt that these gloves are warm.
They are the warmest glove I have ever owned. If all you ever plan to do is walk your dogs or maybe do some glassing from just outside your vehicle, these might be a good choice. If you actually plan to hunt with these and touch anything, I would start making a new plan.
Two weeks after I received the gloves I went out on a hunt. Late February in the Rockies can bring on deep snow and ultra cold conditions. We were snowshoeing through some deep snow and I put my hand on a pine tree for support.
I pulled it back with a hole in the palm. It went straight through the paper thin “leather” and the wool liner. I couldn’t believe the luck that I managed to get a pair of gloves that were defective.
I used my old gloves that aren’t as warm, but they have held up to the elements the past 5 years, and they didn’t have a hole. In fact, after 4 more days, they still didn’t have a hole. Things happen, and luckily I choose a company that stands behind their products with a warranty.
I reached out to the warranty team at First Lite after I returned. It took me a couple weeks after the incident until I was able to get photos taken and uploaded. To my astonishment I received a message from a First Lite customer service representative: “I am sorry to inform you that we cannot proceed with your warranty request.
The reason we cannot move forward with a warranty is this issue appears not to be due to manufacturing but rather wear and tear in the field”. So much for that “lifetime warranty”. “Wear and tear in the field” feels like a pretty big stretch.
It’s starting to sound like the “ultimate cold-weather hunting glove” might ultimately be a paper bag over some nice wool liners. I responded back with a picture of the leather material with a piece of paper on top of it to show just how thin the material was.
This was surely a defect. How could a company with a good reputation that claims to have superior products that they will stand behind? I expressed my disappointment and urged First Lite to take a closer look to determine if this was what I should expect from First Lite products.
“First Lite takes pride in our products and will stand behind their quality. ” – First lite Website The follow up email from the customer service representative was again, disappointing. “I apologize for any frustration here and completely understand where you are coming from here but there is nothing in these images that indicates this was caused by a manufacturer defect”.
In my first response email, I asked that if this was not a defect, the least they could do would be to refund my purchase. These gloves weren’t even a month old and cost over $150 dollars. Instead of a cost free replacement or a refund, I was offered a 30% off discount to “replace” this item.
I already bought the “ultimate cold-weather hunting glove”. This is the top of the line of the gloves that First Lite sells. Spending 30% less on a second pair didn’t sound like a logical solution. It felt like a slap in the face.
My first (and last) experience with First Lite is just like their claim to stand behind their products; COMPLETELY WORTHLESS. Maybe I had a unique experience. It has left such a bad impression that I will NEVER buy another First Lite product again.
I hope this helps other sportsman and women with their decision, If this is your choice, I hope you have a better experience than I did.
