20 Best Winter Feed For Deer (2023 Updated)

Saved a starving herd of deer with this. They love it. I’ve been feeding this year round for several years and it brings in huge bucks as well as the mamas and the babies. We don’t hunt them. We live in a suburban wooded area that is a dwindling habitat For what used to be a rural area full of deer.

Too many people and not enough habitat led to me finding starving mamas and babies in the spring. Broke my heart so I had to do what I could to help them. They love me and I love them. Lol. They actually wait for me to fill the bins every day.

Some of them walk right up to me while I’m in the outbuilding. I get different groups of deer different days and different times of the year. Sometimes it’s all bucks , sometimes it’s more of the babies and the mama’s.

I live on a main deer Trail so I get transient herds that come through all year round As well as some Regulars that bed down on my property. Helping nature is just the right thing to do. Pricey, but I do what I can.

Lots of 12 pointers, 10 pointers and everything in between all the way down to the precious young fawns every year. Wish they had a discount for those of us who purchase all the time all year round. L O L I have blink cameras all over outdoors and I get some great footage.

Bucks sparring during the rut, mamas feeding young ones, And just lots of great looking groups of bucks frolicking (especially one rowdy buck Who always kicks his buddy in the butt To get him away from feeders).

So funny!.

I been running cell cameras for the past 3 seasons and in my opinion big tine is by far the best attraction on the market. We have 5 cameras out at a time on 130 acre property and nothing comes close to big tine.

We tried almost everything else on the market. We’ve put other stuff next to big tine, we’ve put other stuff in front of other cameras while big tine was out and the high majority of bucks always hit the big tine first.

Until it was gone. Why? I have no idea because I’m not a scientist Hahha, but, we did our own experiments and Big tine won hands down. We had 5 bucks over 160” easy come in on big tine all season. Other stuff they shy’ed away from.

Weird. One huge buck came from another property religiously for it.

I’ve used this year round for 3 years. Thousands of bags. The deer find it highly palatable and I now have 2. 5 yr old bucks that were getting this in their mothers milk at birth. The girth of their pedicles is nothing short of amazing.

Increased racks by 35 %- no question- straight across the board of multiple bucks. Here the issue, 1. Bucks shed antler in approx March each year, and begin new growth the following month – sept. This product is so hard to secure from Jan – August, it nearly defeats the purpose of feeding it to them in the first place- the protein- antler growth! I’ve gone to great lengths to have distributors carry year round for me.

r 2. The bag is a measly 25 lbs, and the same price as other protein feeds at 50 lbs. I’ve invested in it because I see the result, and the deer love it. They wont touch many of the other 50 lbs protein products on the market.

2021- Recently I gave Buck Bourbon supplemental feed a try at 40 lbs, (also avail at most TSC) and the deer like it equally as well, and I get more protein for the money- nearly twice. 3. This Protein Plus does incorporate copper, selenium, zinc, and vitamins, which is necessary and appreciated, and not in the Buck Bourbon, but I can also achieve the same thing in mineral sites and blocks.

I believe this is the most well rounded protein feed on the whitetail market, that deer will devour, that’s overpriced for the volume you get in each bag. Cant go wrong with it, except in the wallet, and that’s where it counts, to me.

Buck Bourbon gives me more for the money, the deer eat it daily just like this, and mineral licks will fill the gap, and keep my costs exceptionally lower.

This is great food. Deer love it. Has the famous BIG TINE cherry rush smell deer seem to love. Also has a nutty scent I even found enticing. Thanks to the soybeans In it. I really wish TSC would carry this year round instead of the other BIG TINE with mostly corn and a few sunflower seeds.

I’m not knocking either product but anyone who knows deer nutrition knows they need high protein in the spring and summer and slightly lower protein, higher fat content in the winter. This BIG TINE protein option is much healthier for deer, higher protein and fat content for fawns and is great year round food versus the other more available BIG TINE option.

I use this along with Purina protein pellets for the fawn on my property when I can keep the bucks out of it. They love it.

Great stuff, I would never buy it for the price. I got a bunch from a guy that had about 3 pallets of it on a trailer and was driving like an a-hole. Rolled coal, lost 36 to 40 bags in an intersection behind me.

I threw it in my truck cleaning up the busy intersection, been feeding deer like crazy with it. Raccoons love it more than deer. I think the guy is was delivering to tractor supply.

Love the antler max 20 because of the digestive health nutrients and 20% protein. Both benefit bucks and does. As with most high protein feeds deer dont seem to eat it unless you mix with other attractant feeds.

I mix it with Big Tine Cherry Rush which has about 8% protein and is mix of different seeds and corn plus the Cherry flavor and fortified with whitetail inst. 30-06 mineral. I mix 1 to 1 in my feeders putting the cherry crush in first then antler max, cherry crush, antler max.

I started my backyard deer on the Big Tine deer feed and they loved it so much that I was going through 40 pounds in a week, so I bought the Purina Antler Advantage hoping it would last longer. The good news is that it does last longer, but the bad news is that the reason its lasting so long is that the deer don’t particularly care for it.

My new course of action is to mix the Big Tine (smells like cherries!) with the Antler Advantage and throw in a couple of cups of deer corn, and they love it. Also, its important to note that the Antler Advantage bag indicates this feed is “water resistant” but when it rains the feed turns to mush.

As winter food and food availability has changed in recent years it’s harder for deer to find and consume an adequate amount of nutrition. I do not feed the Whitetail’s to hunt; I feed in order to help preserve the breed.

Between planting feed-plots and buying a whole-lotta sacked corn and pellets, I am able to not only help the deer survive–but I am able to enjoy the deer year-round.

The animals love this mixed with the big tine product. You just have to avoid putting it out when it’s wet. I even mix these with a third of just corn and it seems to get them to eat it ALL. Our pack has returned for regular feedings because of the soybean and persimmon flavoring.

My place is relatively new. I have made plenty of mistakes. Antler Max has most certainly NOT been one of them. My first attempt to use Antler Max was in 2018. I was very late in getting started due to my inability to get the feeders timely.

I probably got started around 6/1. The deer just hammered it. The bucks start shedding velvet around the end of July. I stopped feeding around the end of August. On 2/1/19, I got started feeding AM again.

I have 4 feeders that hold 1250 pounds and 7 that hold 300 pounds. The deer were absolutely terrorizing the AM after the first couple of weeks. I was going through 5,000-6,000 pounds a month. What I was seeing was astounding.

The body size of the deer increased dramatically. I had bucks with incredibly large, unheard of racks for the area. My neighbors were asking me what I was doing. One neighbor estimated an average weight gain of 30 pounds on mature bucks.

Down here, that is absolutely incredible. The man that works for me on the ranch has lived in the area his whole life. He says he has never seen bucks like these. My original plan was to stop feeding in August.

I decided to continue to make AM available. Much to my surprise, the deer are still eating it. They may have slowed down somewhat in their consumption during September but they are still consuming 3,000 pounds.

Of course, part of the reduction of due to acorns dropping. They seem to have picked up again in October. With the results I have seen in 2019, I can’t wait to see what 2020 holds with a full year of feeding.

Without a doubt, the single most productive thing I have done for the deer.

I’ve always looked for a feed for deer besides just corn and I finally found it. Antlermax is the best pellet feed on the market for deer. I can’t keep enough in my feeder. Thank you for making a feed that meets all the needs for our whitetail herd.

One more reason I love this feed is that only deer eat it! No more raccoons, squirrels, and birds helping consume your feed.

Bought a small property mostly wooded area with a little clearing. Have seen a couple deer and other wildlife. Have used other products over the Years and nothing has worked like this. with in two of days of putting this out.

I had 300 pictures on my camera and has brought out some nice bucks from hiding. These deer are not being hunted. On this property little safe hideaway to live there life’s out happily. Hope to see the grow over the next few years.

Saw some reviews on BB 110 and figured I would give it a go. I literally put 2 of the 8lb bags out and also poured a jug of the Old Fashioned and within an hour of leaving, my camera went crazy. This product has pulled in 10 and 14 point bucks that I had no idea were in the area.

All I have been seeing are little 4 and 6 pointers. I am going to buy the 25lb bag and a block now!! This stuff is AMAZING!!.

Dusted a small amount on the trail where bucks and doe visit multiple times per day. Cell cam footage confirms, that deer have avoided the scent for the second day. Smells like cinnamon, licorice, of cloves.

Was marked down at TSC.

I tried regular seed from the local store last year. It came up but I went back to this stuff this year. It grows and grows big. Deer and turkey love it. Have had a dozen deer in front of me at one time with these plots.

Fertilize and put on good soil. Think like a farmer for best results. In Ohio feeds well through early December in warmer years.

Bought these at the end of 2009 (along with 2 other biologic seeds) on sale to plant the next spring. Didn’t get to it until this spring (2014). Did it without much hope of seeing anything as it did say on the package the date of inspection was in the summer of 2009.

Well, it still sprouted pretty good. I did put this up on about a 1/4 acre but a lot of weeds got through and the density of the seed variety from this bag was pour. I do give it the 4 stars because it still sprouted after 5 years in the bag but would recommend putting at least double what the company says for covering adequately what you want.

Also I do not use herbicides with this product.

I have played around with food plots for years. Winter Greens is about the best I’ve come across. My property was never able to hold deer into the Winter. They would always herd up at some neighbor’s corn pile in Northern Wisconsin.

This Spring, two sets of sheds in the stripped bare (I mean nothing left!!) WinterGreen Patch. Prepare smooth seed bed by cultipacking. Spread seed as directed. Cultipack again and wait for the first hard frost.

The deer will be in this stuff thick. Every bit as attractive as standing beans. This Fall I have 3 acres and they look great.

I hunt on small piece of land that is surrounded by acre upon acre of soy beans and corn. My brothers and I plant Winter Greens every fall to draw in the deer. We usually plant in late July or early August.

This product really starts to sweeten after the first frost. Not only do the deer love the green tops, but they dig up the sugar beats after the green is gone. It is a fantastic attractant that will keep deer coming back to your land!.

In 2016 we planted this seed and it grew like crazy. The deer killed it once it got cold. This year, we planted everything the same way and the seed simply didn’t grow in two of the three plots – it stopped at about 3-4 inches, even with the same lime and fertilizer.

The deer are eating it, but not much activity. Maybe a bad batch of seed in one of the bags?.

The first two nights the deer seemed to be afraid of the food block. Once they got used to it they continually chewed on it throughout the night. One block was gone in 6 nights. I think they like it.

My deer herd loves this block. They come by every day for bite. It last about three to four weeks.

I planted this in my first plot I ever did. My son wanted to plant 1/2 the plot with something else. We chose Brassicas. The deer simply loved it. But you never think your plot is good enough. So we created a 2nd plot.

Corn, Beans,Clover,Redtop turnips,etc. Were choices we tried in combos over the next 5 years. Do yourself a favor. Plant only Chickory,the bucks prefer this over all others. And plant Brassicas to ensure late season food source.

Trust me you will have to re-seed every year with chickory, only because the bucks cant get enough and pull it out by the roots. I learned a hard lesson.

The soil was tilled and prepped. Got watered regularly. Zero germination on this batch. Planted braska at the same time in an adjacent plot and it grew great.

Mossy Oak has done a great job putting the Alfaclover seed mix together. It took less than a week to start seeing signs of clover pushing through the dirt. In just over a week I now have alfalfa sprouts showing.

I have tried several other flood plot seed mixes and so far the Mossy Oak Alfaclover has produced the best. I would highly recommend this to anyone planting food plots.

I had tried a diffrent Wildgame Innovations deer attractant and had no sucess. I was disapointed with it and already had a bag of acorn crush and was not very hopefull when I tried it but it worked out so much better then Apple crush I tried! For some reaosn the deer here left the apple alone for two weeks then destroyed my bag of acorn crush! I liek to set up two sights with two cameras just too see if they both get activity and both cameras had pics the first dusk I put this out.

I have since bought another bag and more products from Wildgame Innovations I’m excited to try out!.

I put it out and maybe within 24 hours I observed a slight increase in activity. It was spread around a current corn pile.

this stuff works great over corn in the fall and even better over corn with snow on the ground.i have been using it for years with great success…

I started using this block when it first came out. Deer loved it. Yes it was hard but didn’t stop the deer. Have pics from start to finish. Supply was very limited last couple of years. This year I purchased 10 blocks.

Something has changed. Rain causes them to melt into a pile. Way too soft. Would I recommend it. Yes and no.

Deer and turkeys love it. Placed block in an area only reached by boat that racoons would normally clean up corn quickly. Pics of deer and turkeys feeding on it as well as a little corn and sweet feed i,d scattered around it.

When I checked area after 2 weeks block had been totaly eaten so placed another. Muzzle loader within a week so got to keep the deer happy!.

I’ve been buying this block for about 4 months. Up until two weeks ago the deer were demolishing it. I was going through at least one block per week. I purchased two blocks a couple of weeks ago. The deer did not touch them.

They tried, it seemed the block was too hard for them. I bought a third block with same results. I tried soaking the block in a bucket of water to soften it up. They ate the soft part and left the rest.

Maybe the recipe changed or a bad batch, I don’t know. The deer and I are feeling disappointed now.

This stuff is amazing. Works great on corn but I use it as a cover scent as well. I spilled some on my boot one time and the deer followed my footsteps right to the stand. Also great price

Most important thing: follow the directions. Living in NY, we can’t use deer attractant, so I use it to feed squirrels. Unfortunately, the deer keep eating it before the squirrels. You just have to shoot the deer so the squirrels can get some.

I bought this to use near the Kansas border on a trophy managed ranch but I was worried since no one had used this before the deer would be nervous about a new smell. The morning I used it I had 2 mature does smell it and go right to it and spend almost an hour eating it.

Skipping the corn at the feeder and just eating this stuff. Glad I found something that works and that doesn’t spook deer. I’m gonna use it going forward.

This was like Deer candy !!! I had several Does and multiple Bucks on my camera all hours of the day and night showing up every time I put it out !!! Even showing up late morning. it even pulled Deer away from other guys plots around me.

And with it being “Dirt” color no one could figure out why they were all being pulled my way !! Even walking up on it no one could see it !! And the more it rained the better it worked did not wash away like other Products and “crush’s” do went back 3 days later and bought another 6 bags !! Cannot day enough on how great this product is !!!.

I started feedind does in a residential area that backs up to woods that have now been fully inclosed by subdivisions. Just apples for fun last fall. but then they got really thin over winter, and deathly skinny in spring when nursing.

So I researched to find a high quality feed to help supplement what they could find on their own. This product has a HEALTHY mix, not just a bunch of corn and they love it! The fawns come running when they see me putting it out.

And yes if you’re a hunter, of course it will attract the males as well. (But for my purposes the does are use to me working in the yard 10ft away while they eat. So while Males DO come around because they can smell the yummy food, they usually get too spooked by me being in the yard.

If not, all I have to do is yell “this is female & child only dining sir”. that freaks them out every time lol. Oh and customer service is excellent!!!!! 3 or 4 days of putting out this feed (I put it in large flat containers on the ground) so I had WAY too many deer one night, like 13+, I usually only had 6-8.

So I was freaking out, I didn’t want it to double every few days, my neighbors were going to kill me! So I wanted to call and ask what kind of deer crack they were putting in this feed! But seriously I needed suggestions, tho I was embarrassed because I’m obviously not a hunter, and figured I was going to sound like a nutcase feeding deer for fun.

But the guy I spoke to was kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. I was very impressed. So now if for any reason their “plates” aren’t empty before I go inside, I put them up. Now I’m back down to my manageable regulars.

I have used bait for three seasons now. I have tried all the big brands, and nothing works as fast and as continually as Big and J. I even tried an experiment. I live in a suburb built it the late 70’s.

I put half a bag in my side yard and the first night foxes and does show up, by the second night the bucks are coming! I have had 4 different bucks on the bait every night since.

Initially I was hesitant to use any bait in an hunting situation. Made the decision to try Big & J manufacturing LLC BB2 Granular Deer Attractant. Spread it adjacent to a deer travel route and mineral site; the combination of Big & J product and mineral provided very good results within hours after application to the mineral site.

Whitetails can’t resist & get enough of it. Impressive results, have purchased additional bulk bags for length of both Archery and Firearms seasons.

I have had great success with this product for many seasons. I use it as a mist spray bottle and apply it all over my hunting clothes as a cover scent. Effective enough so a deer walks right up to my ground blind and nuzzles my outstretched hand.

Put the product out. They ate the corn and never were drawn to the product. Never saw another deer for another 10 days. Tried 6years ago and they spooked

Didn’t work at all. Bought 2 bags and tried in 2 separate locations. No deer even came. Waste of time and money.

I’ve tried many different products over the years. 12 years ago I was so impressed after using Trophy Deer Mineral I quit searching. Have been an exclusive Antler King user ever since.

I purchased this product for the first time a few weeks ago. I poured the entire contents of the bag over an old stump and on the ground around it. I placed a trail camera close by and after about 2 days, deer were using the mineral throughout the entire day.

I was skeptical about the product, but it really seems to draw and hold deer. I’m hoping that the minerals in this product will really promote body mass and antler growth with this product. I will be stocking up on this product for the rest of the season!.

I have been using this mineral for years with great success, the deer cannot get enough. It has 27 different antler building minerals, vitamins, and a special yeast culture to assist in absorbing these important minerals and vitamins.

This is the BEST mineral on the market. Other manufacturers use salt as the main ingredient, not Antler King! If you want to grow bigger deer and healthier deer; give them what they need. Trophy Deer Mineral!.

This was our first food plot so we didn’t want to invest a lot of money into it. The no plow was the cheapest with a great variety. We did not do soil tests but followed the instructions on lime and fertilizer.

Three key factors 1) I did some samples to see what seed was what. Proper bedding is the key. The seeds on the surface still germinated but took 4x’s the time to establish. 2) timing is everything. You want to try your best to plant this right before a rain.

My dad did a separate plot and his got rain the next day. His germinated instantly to where it took some time for mine to get rain and took about two weeks to establish and weeds started to come into the plot.

3) Make sure to stir the seeds before spreading. During transport the seeds tend to separate and you’ll end up with sections that are more dominant of one plant. The overall downside to this plot is even though the bag says it’s 24% rye grass.

That grass will soon overpower the rest of the plants. I don’t have a large plot so I try to top the grass with a weed eater at plant height but it’s not enough.

I can tell anyone that THIS STUFF GROWS and it grows without a lot of prep and ground work. I’ve planted NO Plow about 5 times. Old corn fields, power lines, cut bean fields ect ect. The stuff grows, if you kill weeds fertilize and just break the surface of the ground.

The problem though is here in the south some southern deer DO NOT eat this type of brassica in no plow. Theyll eat some of the grasses and other stuff in it but I’ve planted this stuff in 2 different counties.

Waited until hard frosts and freezing temps. The deer didn’t touch it during or after hunting season. I think its a product best for deer up north. I don’t think the brassica blend it what deer eat “in my area”.

I purchased two 25 lb bags. I have a few stands in very remote areas. Spent over a hundred hours this spring planting fertilizing liming. Bottom line. If there is any forest canopy this will not grow.

It needs more than four hours of sunlight a day. The plot I planted with full sunlight grew well. However, it’s basically a stand of tall grass. The various fescues dominate the plot choking out any other forms of seed.

This is essentially just a very expensive way to purchase grass seed. Furthermore the full sunlight No Plow plot is planted immediately next to a plot of clover and chicory. There is no question that the deer in my area strongly prefer the Clover and Chicory, hardly ever showing any interest in the No Plow.

I thought after a hard frost things may change but they haven’t. I wouldn’t waste your money on this product.

We have been using 3006 for years as a mineral supplement. Just one more way to help the deer obtain the necessary minerals to support antler growth, doe lactation and overall heard health.

The 1st time I used this product, it worked great. Got little rain for the next 2 days, I went back to my mineral sites 7 days later. They were filled with flys, stunk, (like rotten food) and because of the sugar in it, what ever didn’t get eaten the 1st night was filed with gray hairy mold.

Poured half the bag mixed in soil then poured other half on top and the next were literally eating it that night. Lots of trail camera photos and an increased amount of deer since using it. I would highly recommend!.
