20 Best Whiskey For Whiskey Ginger (2023 Updated)

Irish whiskey is a special category of whiskey. It used to be the most popular in the world until Prohibition in the United States nearly destroyed it. It is smooth (a word that some people hate), soft, and fruity.

And, for the most part, they’re affordable, especially compared to their Scottish counterparts. One of the things that make Irish whiskey so smooth is that they are typically triple-distilled. It doesn’t have to be; it is just the standard.

As such, when Irish whiskey is twice-distilled, that’s unusual and is owed attention. Such is the case with 2 Gingers. 2 Gingers began as the dream child of Kieran Folliard. Folliard owned a few Irish pubs and created some famous cocktails using Jameson Irish Whiskey.

At some point in 2011, he started sourcing barrels from the Kilbeggan-Cooley distillery. He named his brand after his red-headed mother and aunt. Folliard did so well that he garnered the attention of Beam-Suntory, who, just one year later, purchased the brand from Folliard.

2 Gingers is an Irish Blended Whiskey, which means it marries two or more types of Irish whiskey. With 2 Gingers, single malt and single grain distillates are involved. It is aged four years in former Bourbon casks, although there’s no indication if that’s first-fill or refill or a variety.

It is then packaged at 40% ABV (80°), and you can find a 750ml bottle for just over $20. 00, and it is a cinch to find. For the record, I found and purchased a 50ml taster at a liquor store in Minneapolis.

That price point is also attractive. A $20. 00 Irish whiskey still becomes a candidate for my #RespectTheBottomShelf award. Will 2 Gingers earn one? The only way to tell is to #DrinkCurious. Before I do that, I would be remiss not to mention that 2 Gingers is designed to be a mixer.

If you’re familiar with my reviews, you’ll know that I won’t buy whiskey as a cocktail base; I expect any whiskey to stand on its own, or at the very most, with a few drops of water. I’ve had several “mixer†whiskeys that were delightful sipped neat.

Appearance: Poured neat in my Glencairn glass, 2 Gingers showed as the color of golden straw. It formed a thick rim that created sticky, slow legs. Nose: I found the aroma to include malt, lemon zest, green apple, apricot, and toasted oak.

When I took the air into my mouth, a strong banana presence appeared. Palate: The mouthfeel offered a medium body. Things began with honey, apple, and malted barley on the front, ginger root, vanilla and lemon peel on the middle, pepper, dry oak, and milk chocolate on the back.

Finish: The finish was weird and not in the good/unusual way that I crave. Instead, it started as banana cream, then got spicy with pepper and dry oak, culminating in something slightly bitter. I was cool until that bitter part.

Bottle, Bar, or Bust: 2 Gingers is nothing special and certainly not a means to #RespectTheBottomShelf. I realize that this whiskey is designed to be a mixer, but I’ve had others marketed for mixing that taste just fine neat.

This was not one of them. I’m not sure where to even provide suggestions. Is it proofed too low? Perhaps. Is it lacking time in wood? Probably not, considering how dry the wood notes are. Does it need to be triple rather than twice-distilled? Probably.

This is one of the worst Irish whiskys I’ve bought. Raw, under-distilled and under-aged. Much prefer Tullamore Dew, Bushmills Black, or Busmillls Single Malt. Having bought Single Malt Scotches up to some 21 years old, one learns how proper distilling and aging affect flavor.

Two Gingers is akin to the cheapest single malts, as it has the same raw, unsophisticated profile. Obviously some like it, but the more whisk(e)y you try from Scotland, Ireland and U. S. will reveal how over priced and over rated Two Gingers is.

It’s Irish whiskey in name only and when quantity is more important than quality. Maybe ok for Irish coffee or a mixer. Paddy’s for about the same price is a better choice, or for five bucks more you can actually get something worth drinking.

I am NOT a whiskey person. until now. The misunderstood ginger spiced whiskey was brought to me by a friend so I figured I’d give it a try (I’m always willing to take a sip). I CAN NOT believe how good there whiskey was.

It was so smooth and the flavor was absolutely delicious. I would probably even drink this without a mixer. All I can really say if you are still a sceptic, is that this would be the one for you. Give it a try and if you’re disappointed; you’re wrong.

Definitely Misunderstood. This is meant to sipped by the fire on a chilled night. Starts off with a little heat. And then the sweetness of the ginger explodes. If you don’t enjoy Ginger. This might not be fit you.

I enjoy Ginger in almost everything. Never thought it would be Ginger in a bottle. Genius. Excellent. Unique.

I am not a whiskey drinker, but I do like ginger so I thought I’d give this a try. I was able to taste this before I bought it. Surprisingly, there is very little ginger flavor, but enough to make it a little sweet.

This is a smooth whiskey. I do like it. My husband and his friend were very surprised how much they enjoyed this neat.

Not sure who wrote the description but they probably think you can only drink whiskey neat and anything else is heresy. The fact of the matter is that, while sweet, the whiskey itself is very pleasant when drank, the colder the better.

I get a little of the toffee flavor, more vanilla, and a light walnut. I’ve shared this with multiple people, who all really enjoyed the flavor an immediately asked the maker and if it was available nearby.

This is a pleasant sipper, and cant wait until my order comes in so I can try an old fashioned with it.

It’s a very meh rye. It tastes watered down. If you enjoy drinking rye then this probably isn’t for you.

I had never heard of this brand before. They were having a sampling and I am not a fan of flavored whiskeys so I declined. The young lady suggested that I try the Rye, she said it is a rye blend, not flavored.

I tried it and was really glad that I did! This has become my favorite at home rye, just wish more restaurants & bars sold it.

For any of you whiskey drinkers who have never tried a really good Irish whiskey, I have to point out that Red Breast’s 15 year old whiskey was released last year in limited circulation (due to a small batch) and will probably be quite a few years before we can enjoy it again.

It was first introduced in 2006, the second edition came in 2010, the third in 2014. It’s from the Midleton distillery in Midleton, Co Cork. This is an exceptional whiskey, from its complex honey taste to a gorgeous palate, the finish is so satisfying.

We have an extensive sipping whiskey collection & this is among the best you can get at any price, in our opinion. If you miss the 15; try the 12, which is still a terrific value for money. Redbreast 15 (46%) is richer, earthier, and stronger than its 12-year-old sibling (40%).

Here in So California, the 12-year-old runs approx. $40-50, while the 15 costs $75 – 100. The Whisky Advocate prefers the 12 over the 15, but that was the 2010 edition & we are currently sipping the 2104 edition; not exactly the same, due to the variables of a small batch.

These premium whiskies are not bottled every year, so when you see buy. Clearly nectar from heaven. Slainté !.

Got this after sampling the excellent 12 year old version. An observation a few others have made. the Redbreast 12 year old sets a high bar already. While the 15 year might be “better”, for me it may only be incrementally so.

I do like how it feels to have a bit more of a woodiness than it’s 12 year old counterpart. Appreciate the 46% strength bottling as well, but I would probably just get the 12 year old again. To be clear, this is an outstanding whisky, but I tend to favor value a bit more.

This is a phenomenal Irish whiskey in every sense. The problem is that this whiskey is a victim of how excellent its younger versions are. They are amazing as well but at 20-35% the cost. I’d personally buy 3 of the 12yr cask strengths for the same price as one of these.

Or if that’s too harsh for you, you can get 5 of the 12yr. Do yourself a favor and try this beauty, but know that it’s only incrementally superior to the younger, and vastly less expensive, Redbreasts.

Jameson Triple Distilled is an indictment of the Whiskey Industry and the consumer’s willingness to be led by popular opinion instead of their own flavor journey. I will never say that it’s a bad whiskey.

But I will also never be heard saying that it is anything approaching great – or even good! Just read the reviews here – it is indicative of the kind of people who enjoy Jameson. Soulless and hardly helpful.

People say it’s ‘smooth’ and ‘easy drinking’. the same can be said for WATER. Ask them what can be found on the nose – they won’t be able to distinguish any discernable notes worth mentioning. Ask them what is to be discovered on the pallet – and there’ll be less information forthcoming than the nose.

For the asking price, or cheaper, I can mention at least 5 whiskies that offer a better drinking experience. The Pogues. Aerstone – Sea Cask, Tamnavulin and Tullamore D. E. W. even William Lawsons, Paddy and Bells offer a more exciting tasting experience than the pricier Jameson.

I have given it all the attention it deserves and have come to the conclusion that it is simply not my idea of a good whiskey. I am happy for those who enjoy it and swear by it but I’m sure they are the kind of people that cannot hold a conversation beyond wats happening with their favorite Premier League Soccer team.

As a Kentuckian, bourbon is our pride and joy, so there’s a bias when it comes to other American whiskeys, or other international liquors. Scotch whiskey – still haven’t tried. But one St. Patrick’s Day I decided to do an Irish stew; since I’m not a Guinness fan, I went with one recipe containing Irish Whiskey and decided this was my chance to try Jamieson.

So I ended up trying the brand three different ways. And I was hooked! First, as far as the stew, it was an addition that kicked up the flavor a bit without overwhelming the meat, the vegetables or the base.

Next I went with a cocktail: Irish Lemonade and an Irish Paloma, and the mellowness of the Whiskey came through, the vanilla and nuttiness playing off the citrus. It wasn’t overly potent. Everything was balanced.

Finally came trying it straight, the real test, and this is when I became a fan. It’s as described: very smooth on the tongue, smooth going down and none of the burning. I didn’t taste a lot of the spice, but the nuts and vanilla were present but evened out each other.

It was something I could sip in the evenings, straight or on the rocks. So three different ways to use Jameson’s, each of them wonderful. I don’t buy it enough and I need to. It’s not only for St. Patrick’s Day.

I was first introduced to Jameson when I was going to school at Arizona Automotive Institute back in 2004. A classmate asked me for a ride home and offered me a glass of 50/50 blend of Jameson and Cola.

It was at that point that I knew Jameson was something special. It wasn’t until 2018 that I made the switch to just Jameson Irish Whiskey. I’ve always been a whiskey man but leaned toward cheaper varieties due to financial hardships.

My favorite way to enjoy Jameson is mixed with Cherry Coke Zero. There is just something with that combination that I enjoy so much. Jameson is such a smooth drink that you hardly notice it when it is mixed with something.

It is also a great social shot drink as well, with barely any bite at the end. My basement bar will always have a bottle of Jameson for me to enjoy and share with others.

I was drinking scotch. A friend, who plays live music in taverns, told me he likes to sip Jameson while playing live onstage. I decided to try some. I was pleasantly surprised. I get no “shiver factor” at all from Jameson.

I can detect the grains and several other flavors. Two drinks is very relaxing. I find that i love writing songs on my guitar during and after the second dram. Another aspect i enjoy is the knowledge that this is such an old spirit recipe.

I can see in my mind’s eye old time sailors sipping Jameson before bunk time and after meals. The care and effort that goes into Jameson Irish Whiskeys is a tribute to centuries of quality spirit making to the highest standards.

I tip my Irish woolen cap to the brewers, distillers, and shipping departments at the still house. Gártha!!!.

I received this as a gift a few weeks ago and decided my 60th birthday would be a great day to treat myself to a glass. Wow, what an incredibly smooth and complex flavor this vintage has and so enhanced by the rum cask finish.

Excellent is just not enough to explain the sensation this Scotch leaves you with from nose, to finish! Thanks Glenfiddich.

I bought this for my husband who is a whiskey/scotch collector and he LOVES it! It’s his new favorite and I don’t usually drink alcohol, but even I enjoyed sipping on this after dinner! So smooth and delicious yet subtle flavors that surprised me.

We will always have a bottle around from now on!.

First, let me preface the review by saying my ratings is based on comparing to other bourbons regardless of price. Some people will give something 3 starts if they don’t like it and thats not where I am at.

Three star to me means that its a solid, middle of the road bourbon that I enjoy, but don’t think it stands out. I’ll save the flavor notes because everyone has a different palate and get different things out of it (especially if adding ice/water).

This a solid, respectable and consistent bourbon. Its got a little bit of everything, but to me, just missing that thing that smacks you in your face and gets your attention. Where I live, this costs about $42 a bottle and wouldn’t buy at that price, but in the $30 price range, definitely worth having in the cabinet when you are in the mood for something on the moral floral/fruity side (makes a pretty good Old Fashioned in my opinion).

I’m not going to compare its flavor directly to any other bourbons, but its definitely better than your standard offerings from like Jim Beam or Jack Daniels or even its own small batch offering. But I think it falls short of others like Woodford (standard reserve or double oaked), 1792 single barrel, Knob Creek single, Eagle Rare 10 year, etc.

Basically its something I enjoy from time to time, but not something I ever go to the cabinet looking for.

After having tried both Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 and Highland Park 12, I bought this MacAllan 12 Yr double cask expecting something better and was let down. Sherry barrel aging in Speysides typically impart the almost prune-like sweet character from the Pedro Ximenez grapes’ influence, but this is lacking in the MacAllan.

Bourbon barrel aging usually produces vanilla, baking spice and caramel notes, but these are also lacking in the MacAllan. The peat element of the MacAllan manifests as an unpleasant bitterness, and the alcoholic burn is stronger than competitors.

The qualities don’t play nicely in the MacAllan, like a band that has rehearsed their parts well but the instruments are poorly mixed by the soundman during their live performance, creating a less than stellar experience for the audience who paid top dollar for their tickets.

The sweet, prune-like, cigar tobacco-like aromas and the vanilla and baking spice elements present in Glenfiddich 12, paired with its comparable smoothness going down, makes it a far more desirable Speyside than this MacAllan, which is much harsher and less pleasant on the tongue in comparison.

Odd because their production processes are very similar.

Ever since the Edrington group purchased Macallan in 1999, there has been a clear shift to profit over quality, and Macallan 18 sherry oak (the most iconic Macallan) suffers from this. We are seeing the first caskings of the Edrington era starting in 2018 (18 years after the takeover) with a clear drop in quality of this iconic scotch.

I last bought two bottles of Macallan 18 in around 2015 (the 1996 bottlings) and finally needed more of my favorite. The 2022 release is very smooth and drinkable without any unpleasant aromas or taste is a solid step down from the tremendous bottlings of yesteryear (the last amazing bottling was the 1995 casting which was sold in 2013-2014).

In my cupboard are Yamazaki 18, Hibiki 21, Glendronach 18, Aberlour 18, Glengoyne 25, and I always preferred the Macallan. With the drop in quality of the Macallan, I think I prefer the Aberlour 18 (I purchased six bottles in 2015 for 65 bucks each) regardless of the price.

Macallan 18 is still a quality scotch but I suspect Macallan’s reputation will decline as it no longer amazing scotch.

I have been drinking 12 year old Aberlour (still a favorite), but wanted to find another single malt for variety. This 12 year old Macallan Double Cask fits the bill perfectly for my taste (remembering smell and taste are subjective).

This is a smooth, aromatic scotch with very little bite. I enjoy my scotch on the rocks and this appears to bring out buttery caramel, vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. I also like it is not peaty. This is a scotch I would share with someone who is new to single malts.

It may be a little more expensive, but is a great value for what it delivers.

Genuinely, don’t understand how this gets such high marks. When I drank this, it waylaid me with this absolutely invasive burnt rubber/plastic taste. Kept thinking I was licking tires off of asphalt.

I cant pick out anything else cause this flavor is just way too pervasive. Not only that, it left a lasting bitterness that really made it hard to go back for more. Since this was my first scotch, I had assumed it was just the profile of scotch, but I’ve since had Glenfiddich 12, which blasted away these assumptions.

I’ve had a scot tell me that Johnnie Walker (and blended scotch in general) isn’t what the locals drink, and to stick to single malts. Personally, I still have faith that a blended scotch could wow me and hit all the right buttons for me, but I absolutely won’t be looking for those in Johnnie Walker anymore.

I like the range of Johnny Walker whisky. It is an excellent libation in whatever colour iteration you Prefer. However, my comment is regarding its presentation. The new Red Label labelling is atrocious.

My first impression was that Waitrose had provided me with an imitation brand. It looks cheap and very unappealing; so much so that I cannot place it on the drinks cabinet for all to see, but inside where it can remain hidden.

It looks like a bottle of ‘pop’. If the next bottle I order is the same, I shall switch to anther brand.

My Man loves Johnnie Walker Black! Loved this gift set that was available around Christmas time! The person at the liquor store actually showed me this gift set which included two unique glasses that was the same size bottle and same price except you also get two cool free Johnnie Walker brand glasses to enjoy your drink in! He loved this as a Christmas stocking stuffer! Hope they continue to offer holiday sets! The beverage is Highly recommended by him and I highly recommend the packaging/branding of this limited edition set! #keepwalking.

I can’t really taste the ginger, but I can’t really taste the blackberries or red currants or stone fruits in the wines I drink either. But I like my Bourbon a little raw and with a little bite and this one is mostly just sweet.

A bit dangerous as it goes down kinda quickly. But perfect if you’re looking for a smooth, easy, sip.

A friend of mine told me about this bourbon, and it’s not available where I live so I ordered a bottle online to try it. That first bottle didn’t last two days, as several of us sampled. and re-sampled this delicious bourbon the day it arrived.

The biggest surprise was the hint of honey that the ginger imparts. It’s subtle enough not to be overpowering, yet present enough to cause me to label it “dangerously delicious”! We’ve ordered 4 bottles since that first one, and plan on ordering more.

Very good bourbon. Makes a great Charleston Mule. This is where I discovered it. Very smooth and tasty as a shot.

If your a curious cat like me then you know you want to find something delicious and enjoyable as well as affordable. Wow a triple threat idea. Impossible? Well hold ya horses. A little back ground on me.

I have tried b n j. The generic canadian blended whiskey at the grocery store. To the johnny walker 18 year platinum. And thru out my journey. Of trying out 10$ whiskey to 300$ whiskey. I found that this macallan is the sweet spot.

Its single malt so get ready for a refined taste. Rather than the blended taste which makes it hard to tell if its actually good or not because you are getting hit with multiple sensation at once. You know.

Its like blended is good but it feels like when you eat a hamburger and fries at the same time. Its all good generally. But it also makes it hard to pinpoint what exactly you like. Sure. The hamburger is good either way.

And macallan is like picking out the hamburger and eating the pickles and lettuce and tomato separately. Its enjoyable and you can really feel the flavors without being overwhelmed or masked by other flavors.

And if you get cheap whiskey. Its like getting a hamburger and putting alot of ketchup. Its generally good but you really only taste the sweet ketchup or mustard. Or (chaser) since we are drinking. Now for this price range.

I love the perfect balance of overall enjoying it. It use to be about 40 to 60 bucks but now its about 80 bucks and its still awesome. The numbers are really a reflection or rising prices but the quality stays the same.

This is a great drink that is comfortable like a good pair of shoes. And i consider it a sweet spot of affordability and price. Sure. You can splurge or if your rich. You can buy better quality but you would be paying double the price to improve slightly.

I would say. This is like 90 out of 100. A a-class drink. If you want that near perfect drink. Then you can always pay 100 or 200 dollars more for that slight velvety or smoother buzz. But it also depends on the circumstance because this is a great drink to have during dinner or talking and socializing with others.

It gets you feeling good and smooth yet. Its not so refined that you want to sit down. In silence. With the lights dimmed. Playing your favorite music. With your belly full of food. And you are at peace and sensitive to the slightest sensory of life.

But those drink cost more. Anyway. Buy it if you can afford it. Enjoy it. I do.

Shipped fast. Was packaged so well. Package even got lost on FedEx truck and they brought it by late that evening and bottle was perfect. I paid a little too much for a hard to find Stagg bottle but I have been out for a while and it’s my all time favorite and this was the only place that had it.

Stagg Jr. Batch 15 is an excellent well rounded bourbon. It drinks hot but over a large ice cube it is perfect. This is definitely a celebration whiskey for me!

I was a fan of another label from Speyside. They decided to get a little fancy with their woods which is fine, it seems to be the trend these days. Balvenie was always a good back up for me when it was not available.

They have always produced a very balanced and delicious scotch at the 12 year level. I was looking at 18 year from the other label but then saw this option was cheaper so I figured it was worth a try for a celebration scotch.

I am so glad I did. I actually like this better and it has become my new standard. It just has everything in balance. Caramel and nut flavors are tempered by some smokey peat in just the right way. You never get slapped in the face with big bold flavors – every sip is just right.

Is it worth the cost of entry? I think so. Its my new favorite and I will savor this bottle over the next year.

This was a gift for my wife who earned her PhD. She was very excited to try it. Now it is much less of a nightly drink and much more of a tiny celebration in a glass. This scotch appeals to all five senses.

It may be the best gift I’ve ever given.

If you’re like me and most of your experience with Scotch is the mellower, fruitier Speysides & Highlands, or blended Scotches, you’re in for a very different experience. This whisky is a symphony of smoke and salinity.

The nose reminds me of new leather, and bacon cooked on a campfire, a really intense smoky and savory aroma. Palate is salty, briny, meaty, something bitter earthy, ashy, the smoke is present but not overpowering or unpleasant.

It perfectly complements the other flavors. Finish is quite dry and leathery. At 46% ABV it has body, depth, richness, but is still very smooth. I typically prefer sweet, dark fruity, sherried Scotch, but I have to say this is really good stuff, and absolutely worth trying if you’re open to enjoying the smokier style of Scotch whisky.

Walk to the garden section of your local home depot. Specifically by the garden hoses. Now place a campfire there. That is precisely what this whisky smells like. On the palate, It hits you immediately with an incredibly strong peat smoke flavor that will take a little getting used to.

But after swallowing, the intensity will quickly leave and you’ll be left with a mouth full of heavily salty and smokey barbecue. Is this whiskey good? As a fan of barbecue, campfires, and maybe even the garden section of home depot yes! I think this is fantastic! But if none of those are your thing you might want to stay away.
