20 Best Whiskey For Sore Throat (2023 Updated)

Finally gave in to the hype of this “budget” offering. Larceny is a fitting name, as it should be a crime to sell this. The nose is like a vanilla+honey urinal cake. I have had undiluted white dog that burns less than this.

Initial mouthfeel is painful, swallow is painful. I have hundreds of bourbons in my home bar, and dozens of cheaper offerings that outdo this failed attempt at high wheated bourbon.

I was thrilled to find this great whiskey through the site. The name and label is a bit obnoxious, but the taste is smooth and rich. It is hard to find in the mainstream liquor stores. Nice to know I found it here.

It arrived quickly and well packaged. Shipping was expensive though. Not sure who to blame.

Best tasting whiskey I’ve ever had and I can drink it straight. Probably one of the very few that I can. This stuff should be everywhere.

This is a Whiskey for girlfriends you want to get drunk. It’s a sweet Whiskey that serious Whiskey drinks will raise their eyebrows at. Think of Drambui on the cheap.

My collection was missing a Campbeltown, and I’ve heard great things about Springbank, including its being family owned and operated. It’s lightly peated and easy to drink, featuring citrus and grassy notes.

I think this is a very underrated scotch, and while Campbeltown’s have faded away recently, this is certainly worthy of being added to your collection. The one downside is the price, which has experienced a rather steep hike lately.

$84. 99 for a 10 year is a lot, especially when you can get other high quality 10 years like Talisker, Laphroaig, Ledaig and Glengoyne for significantly less. Still, if you are looking to add a Campbeltown to your collection, Springbank is the way to go.

I bought this a month ago after many positive reviews on-line. Have enjoyed other Springbanks, which is considered one of the last “hand-crafted” distilleries. The 10 year old is my perfect profile – sweet fruits & slight smoke.

Not overpowering peat. It gets better as you move down the bottle, more rounded. I like to add a few drops of water.

I’m not a trained taster, so take this with a grain of salt, but this is a splendid single malt. The nose is an enticing, fruity mingling of apples and oak. Palette is creme caramel and apples with undertones of oak and pine and a trace of smoke.

Finish is a lingering medley of apples, oak, and smoke. After experiencing Springbank 10, I’m dying to get a taste of Springbank 15.

As being a guy who normally goes for Jameson Irish whiskey, I ran across Proper No. Twelve and decided to give it a try. I read a review by some “professional” blow hard saying it was less than expected.

his over the top explanation basically told me that he is not a fan of Connor McGregor and that his whiskey would pay for that slight of prejudice. My personal opinion of the Proper No. Twelve is, smooth, rich, with a spice finish.

It actually reminded me of a Havana made Monte Cristo No. 4 cigar finish. I could taste the honey and very little vanilla but it’s there. Flavor: I actually like the Proper over my normal Jameson. I like the spicy finish.

It may be a sin to say, but I think I like the Proper No. Twelve a bit better. It is smooth with a bite. To me it has flavor, texture, and it’s smooth. I like it quite a bit, but everyone has different tastes.

I am also a fan of the cork topper! Being the non- conformist punk rocker type, I am going to go with the Proper No. Twelve over the Jameson I have been drinking for many years now.

I had seen this bottle on the shelf for a while a decided to give it a try. Gotta say for the price I’m disappointed. A good whiskey is layered and has several levels of taste to sort through. This whiskey is shallow, and while fairly mild in taste, leaves the palette lacking.

No decernible taste profile. The first hint of disappointment comes with with the bouquet, which renders a harsh, alcohol forward fragrance. Not the oaky or sweet notes one hopes to acquire from a good whiskey.

I tried several glasses of this stuff, both on the rocks and neat hoping that my initial opinions would change, unfortunately they grew darker with each glass. This is an average to below average whiskey, marketed as a mid to higher end whiskey.

I’ll save you the $40 and recommend buying something else.

Perhaps this would be better to clean my shower or desk with than to drink. I have NO idea how ANYONE could call this a good whiskey. It’s seriously like the ten dollar bottles you’d buy in college. for thirty bucks.

The only cool thing about this bottle is the bottle which looks like a hipsterized vintage 1920’s bottle. Good looking on the shelf until you open it. Even mixing it with soda or ginger ale leaves a harsh and astringent taste.

You could put sugar in gasoline and have a similar tasting product. Ever since Jay Z became a billionaire selling mediocre champagne and cognac, there’s been a race to see what celebrity could make the most money by endorsing a liquor.

Unfortunately the result is a bunch of gross, nasty junk. Anyone who argues that Tito’s is a luxury vodka would probably enjoy proper 12. Anyone who doesn’t drink jagermeister in shot form on a night out would find this Proper 12 offensive and terrible.

Sorry, just calling it like I taste it. This is a chemical cash grab. Skip this and if you must get Jameson, Tullimore Dew or Glen Moray. Better yet, for around the same price grab some Glennfidich or Langevin.

It is a gift so I have no idea what it tastes like. I will find out when he opens the bottle. Service from store was excellent. Arrived earlier than I expected.

The Tasters are no where to be found in the area I live. This has a lot a flavor and worth it. The shipping was great. I will be ordering this again.

was surprised but how good this is , polished a bottle with my girlfriend in a week , and we dont usually drink that much!

Honestly torn between giving this two or three stars. By no means is this bad but I could easily rattle off way more than a handful of bourbons that I feel are superior at a fraction of the price. This bourbon has virtually no nose and is pretty uninspired as far as the palette is concerned.

Cool looking bottle but I feel a little like I fell for the marketing. TBH the KO seems like average to slightly above average juice packaged and marketed well to take advantage of the bourbon craze.

I’ve been intrigued by kentucky owl for some time. Collectors rave about prior batches, was hoping confiscated would deliver some of what the hype suggested. Good sipping bourbon with medium complexity, but for its price I won’t buy again.

There’s plenty of incredible bottles out there for a fraction of the cost.

Living in the U. S. I get really excited at the opportunity to taste an interpretation of Scotch-style whiskey so strongly influenced by my homeland. McCarthy’s Single Malt also combines many of the elements I seek out when choosing from among my favorite Scotches: a mineral earthiness, fruits and bitter chocolate.

The peat is (in my opinion) appropriately restrained while still very apparent. Where other peated whisk(e)y seeks to fill my mouth with ash, McCarthy’s uses its peat to transport and complement malt’s other basal notes, conjuring images of orchards and old wood-mills so ubiquitous to the northwest United States.

It is a worthy fusion of old and new world distillery magic, dripping with nostalgia for a world that never entirely existed, save for in our thoughts and in our glass. Thank you folks for the epic sip.

This is far and away the most coherent American peated single malt whiskey I have tasted. While I also appreciate the funk of Del Bac, Balcones and others (great in their own ways) the fact that this uses imported peated Scottish barley is what sets it apart.

While it is cut from the same cloth as heavily peated Scotch whisky, it still has enough of its own character to keep it from being a “me-too” whiskey. Smooth, balanced and complex, especially for a 3-year-old, I guess with their very limited production, we are unlikely to see many older age statements in the future.

My only knock is it should have been bottled at 46% or better. I get the supply and economics rationale behind this, but 42. 5% sells this whiskey short. I do appreciate the total lack of added color and minimal filtration, though.

Clearly, somebody knows what they are doing at Hood River.

Full disclosure. I found a special batch bottle of “Cask Strength” (56%) McCarthys at a store in Oregon so I am reviewing that. I don’t have a lot of experience with scotches. Maybe I’m not a peat-smoked barley type of guy.

This was overpowering to me. It was like sipping whiskey on a 300 level smoke day during fire season. I think there were some hints of caramel, but the smoke kept coming back to drown out whatever was there.

Mother’s milk – I’m a Southern girl who proudly grew up with this spirit. No, it ain’t Pappy. But after hosting a “blind” bourbon tasting party with some of our more sophisticated friends, Ancient Age came out on top – much to their chagrin.

(Obviously, Pappy wasn’t a part of the flight – who would share?? 🙂 It’s in my blood and anything from BT distillery defines what good bourbon is – no matter the price point – from Pappy on down, they’ve earned their reputation.

(Note: I’m a bit reluctant to share this review, for fear of causing it to be even more hard-to-find, but try it! You won’t regret it. ).

Don’t expect this to be liquid gold just because it’s BTac. However, you could do a LOT worse for $10. Sugary-sweet nose that almost reminds me of bubblegum or cotton candy. Unfortunately the flavor is a little thin and not much else besides vanilla sweetness and a hint of cinnamon on the finish.

An ice cube or a few drops of water might open up some oak flavors for you as they did for me. Final verdict: inoffensive for sipping but too weak in flavor and proof to be mixed with much.

Ancient Age Bourbon is my husband’s favorite bourbon, along with Buffalo Trace, both produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky. They seem to be more and more difficult to find in a store. We are very happy that Total Wine is stocking Ancient Age.

It is an excellent bourbon, is moderately priced and that adds to the enjoyment.

Old Forrester has released a series of historic recipe Bourbons: 1897, 1910 and 1920. By far, the 1897 is the best. Moderately high ABV of 50%, with some nutty characteristics, backed by soft brown sugar notes.

Comes across a bit like a warming pecan pie. Definite notes of pecan in this one.

Old Forester and I go way back. We have a love hate relationship and she’s always been my fall-back during tough times. I was excited to try this but wasn’t super blown away. Maybe it’s because my buddies were raving too much about this.

Either way, it’s a solid 7/10. There’s better bourbons out there but Old Forester will always be there for you.

I think this is a really underrated bourbon compared to the more popular names, mainly because it’s great for both quality and price. Served neat, it has a good sting to it, but there’s a surprisingly fruity aspect, which is what sets it apart from some of the other similar brands that are great for sipping.

But that’s not to say it’s overwhelming or so remarkable that you’d be able to pick it with a blindfold on. It’s simply a great bourbon for sipping, neat or on the rocks, and you can feel like a good bourbon know-it-all if you serve it to a friend while explaining what the name and year mean.

The review “Be sure to drink with rock” is SPOT On! Thank you Sir/Ma’am. Full disclosure – I’m a spoiled Talisker type brat so I’ll rate everything blended to be rocked low. Got this as a gift. But this one has an especially weird cheap ” vilaige bar palette ” that is down right disappointing and lingering.

Reminds me of my college nights. Don’t expect a cool discovery tour – it’s just a lower shelf blended whiskey. No story to tell. But it’s clean. Like vodka.

This whisky is designed for Japanese Highball cocktails and in that use it is very good. I would not recommend it for sipping unless you like a very light whisky/scotch. There are many recipes online, but it’s basically a simple mix of whisky, club soda, ice, in a tall glass.

I also add orange bitters and an orange twist but that’s optional. Great on a warm day of if you want something different with a meal that you would normally have with a beer. These are very popular in Japan and all bars serve it there.

So if you want to try something very Japanese but very approachable I highly recommend a Toki highball!.

Simply add 1.5 shots of jim beam peach over ice and add favorite iced tea. (I ENJOY ARIZONA ARNOLD PALMER LITE HALF AND HALF BRAND) it goes down easy and refreshing.

Support Innovation. Buy a bottle (at least one time) of triple mash. This is the type of whiskey small ” craft”/”artisan” distilleries wish they could make themselves. If they could make the price would be well above $35.

Only an innovative distillery like JD could read between the lines of the BIB regs & capitalize on the fact that nothing is violated by blending different mashbill whiskeys. as they all meet the same BIB requirements & knock it out for $35.

Simply brilliant. Why not 5 stars? For me personally this whiskey won’t be part of my regular rotation. Why? Buy this whiskey. try it. it’s delicious. and very different. After some time, try one of your old favorite standard go-to Rye or Bourbon (or any Whiskey).

You’ll then know if this whiskey is for you or not. For me personally, it was not. However that’s purely subjective. Many people will love this one whiskey.

This whiskey takes you for a ride. It’s almost like they somehow layered the whiskies rather than blended them. The first thing I get on the palate is Irish whiskey. I’m still sorting out the mid palate, but there isn’t anything all that strong about it.

It’s more like a transition. As the whiskey crosses the soft palate and enters the throat, there’s a strong peppery spice to it. The finish isn’t sweet, and it isn’t bitter–it’s just spicy. Very spicy.

I’m going to give it 5 stars for quality and innovation. It’s good. I’m not a big fan of *that* much spice, so I probably won’t buy it again, but I can imagine some people really liking this.

100 proof, decent to minimal heat which speaks to aging. To be honest if you were to blind taste test this you wouldn’t guess it’s Jack, it tastes like a bottle in bond for sure. Somewhat close to their single barrel offerings.

Nice flavors and mellow, hint of sweet. Most importantly the price point can’t be beat. Enjoy neat or on a brick (craft ice). Cheers!.

I had the most wonderful time at the Rieger Distillery in KC! My daughter and son-in-law booked us a tour and a tasting that followed. The facility is amazing and the spirits that they produce are first rate.

I especially loved the their whiskey aged in Sherry cask. It is smooth and well balanced! Delicious! I am not much of a gin drink but it too was very good! The Vodka was excellent as well. The staff is well trained and personable.

If only I could have fit a bigger bottle of the whiskey in my luggage…. Don’t forget to take the slide down to the first floor! It’s perfect for all of us “big kids!” Searching for it in Virginia but to date no luck!.

Such a rare gem. Velvety smoothness, with a great finish. The only Kansas City whiskey on the market. Great price point.

I had this at a Bourbon tasting and fell in love with it. Even though it’s Whiskey you drink it like Bourbon. On the rocks or neat. Very Smooth

Hints of toasted vanilla, back end butterscotch, French Bordeaux, sweet spring water, burnt cherrywood, white pepper, maraschino, sugar cookie, slight ozone finish, a rumbling pepper flame as it rolls around.

The finest bourbon I’ve ever tasted, full and complete with every tastebud engaged.

Was saving bottle for special occasion. Opened it last night. Consensus by all. A very good bourbon!

If you want cheap, this is a fantastic rail whiskey for mixed drinks. People at the bar I worked at claimed that it also didn’t tend to give them a hangover like other whiskey brands. (I never consumed it in large quantities.

) It’s a little harsh when slowly consumed straight, so most of the barflies used to drink it in shots.

is a bourbon that goes down smooth and easy. It’s not one that is so strong it’s hard to enjoy. It’s made with soft red winter wheat as opposed to rye. And, of course the iconic red wax seal on the bottle they’re famous for! They have a free ambassador program on their website.

You not only get an ambassador kit in the mail but, something even cooler, IMO. All new Ambassadors are assigned a barrel of Maker’s Mark. Your name will be engraved on a placard which will be affixed to a newly filled barrel.

Big fan of Makers Mark, especially 46 and the yearly high-proof exclusive, not to mention wheater bourbons in general. I will say that drinking this neat (how I usually drink bourbon) did not impress me very much and it drank like a much hotter regular Makers Mark.

However, one hot Arizona day I added one large sphere of ice and it really opened up the flavor profile. Now I always add a bit of water or some slow melting ice to this to broaden the taste and my enjoyment.

Notes of baking spices, vanilla, and cherry. Medium length finish. 4/5 stars because for it to have a perfect score I would rather have to not add anything to it. Also, the proof is 108. 7 rather than 110 as pictured on the thumbnail.

And one last nit-pick is it has a screw top rather than a cork top.
