20 Best Wheelsets For Road Bikes (2023 Updated)

The title says most of it but I’m pretty happy with the wheelset overall. It fit my criteria (machined sidewall, black walls and spokes, double-walled) and that was basically what I searched for when looking.

I wish it had variants for fewer spokes but that’s really my only “complaint” and it isn’t even a complaint really.

Poor Hubs. they were broken in two months. They seem to be heavier or slower while I was using them. They seem like a great deal, but if you spend just 50 more dollars, you will be more satisfied. and they will probably last longer.

Nice rim, feels solid esp on down hill runs. No creaking and staying tri. They are a good training tire,and could race em in a pinch.

These were my first pair of tubeless wheels, and I must say I am loving it. The technology is fantastic, I used be scared of tubeless thinking what if? But I assure you it works and works perfectly. I still do carry a spare inner tube as I do long distances, but the comfort for long rides are just awesome.

Just received a set of this wheels today. The package was perfect no issues, Bikeinn price was the best on the market, but delivery a little slow than i excpected 4 5 days more. Otherwise the communication with Bikeinn was very good, price and product also.

First, delivery took only one day to Emmen, Netherland. This can be compared to science fiction nowdays regarding covid-19 situation. Great job Bike-Components! Since delivery I made 140km with wheels at wet/cold conditions.

They rolling very smoothly, silently. free-wheel is almost silent. The sound of cutting through air comes at speeds above 34km/hour. They feel stiff and strong, and are very responsive to turns. Bearings seems to be sealed good after these wet 140km, didn’t see any water penetrated inside hubs.

It’s only 140km so far, and can’t say a much, but first impression is that this wheels performing very well. So, that’s why 5 stars (togheter with delivery service).

Another shimano budget wheel with an issue. This time freehub wobbling, I have contacted with Sigma straight away reporting a problem and I have to say I was disappointed how Sigma decided to resolve it.

They wanted to repair the wheel under warranty and when I said I would prefer return the wheel problems started. I have to mention I didn’t use this wheel at all, so if you find something faulty from new you have right to return and refund with no questions.

Whilst talking to Zeb I had an impression that I have to keep this wheel. I insisted on returning and refund I have been told that I will be charged £15 collecting fee which may be refunded if their Inginier confirm faulty wheel.

I have expected that Sigma will not find anything wrong with a wheel ( based on conversation over the phone) so I sent broken wheel on my own cost and attached an invoice. Sigma refunded cost of the wheel only saying that everything with the wheel is ok.

I couldn’t agree and ask for refund postage cost and they refunded 50%. I have accepted 50% but still feel screwed. This wheel was faulty, I am cyclist with a years experience and I hav had a lot wheels in my life.

Purchased to replace worn-out Shimano wheels on my older 9-speed bike. Worked great with the included spacer. I bit heaver than my previous wheels, but they work fine and roll well. No real issues and the price was good for their intended use.

I bought this wheel for use with a Wahoo KICKR Snap indoor trainer, so I can’t comment on the outdoor performance. Wheel is solidly built, and came and has remained true. Low spoke count. Fat bladed aero spokes.

Cup and cone bearings; for outdoor I would prefer cartridge bearings for ease of servicing. 9-10-11 speed compatible. Very good price-quality.

Punctured 2 tubes trying to mount GP5000 tires. Not sure what tire will mount fairly easy but don’t even try GP5000 or Grand sport race (seems impossible without levers and even with levers is very difficult).

Trying to mount those tires have completely turned me off on ICAN. Shame too cause I have an older frame that requires a narrower rim vs the newer wider >25mm rims. I will keep trying and update if anything changes.

I almost never write reviews but i just got back from my first century on these and I thought it was important to say How great they are! I was nervous about buying these wheels and it’s only thanks to reviews here that I took the chance: so it’s only fair I repay the favour.

They arrived well packed and looked amazing. They were easy to fit- although the tyres were a bit tight on! Riding is amazing! Once you hit a speed high enough to feel the aero advantage they are a serious game changer.

Bit twitchy in cross winds but nothing you wouldn’t expect at this rim depth, certainly no worse than Zipps! Cannot recommend enough!.

These are my first carbon fiber wheels. They came out of the box true and round but I did need to adjust the “twist” on just about every aero spoke. I mounted Continental Grand Prix 5000 25c tires (boy, was that difficult).

This combination is smoother (more comfortable) than my stock wheels. I am cruising and climbing faster. Not sure about the brake pads (front pads whistle), think I’ll replace them. In three rides I set 25 PR’s on Strava.

I’m still nervous about downhill speed, slowly working my way up close to 40 mph, but no issues so far.

This would be my second order and wheel set from ICAN. I haven’t mounted these a40’s up yet, I’m building up an SL4 Roubaix rim brake to put them on. I can only speak to the ordering experience so far.

However, just from holding these wheels and giving them the spin test, typical ICAN quality!! Very tight and true! Bladed spokes and Novatech hubs. Whoever is building their wheels is a master builder in my opinion.

Like I mentioned, this is my second wheel set I’ve ordered from ICAN. Both times, the quality is outstanding! I received my wheels faster than most things I order from here in the USA! ICAN sent over a set of these G25 for review. I’d always wanted a second set of wheels for the gravel bike (my main set are 700c), so this was a good opportunity for me to find out what 650b was al about.

There was no obligation from them for me to do anything other than a review, in my own words. Since posting the review over on YouTube I’ve continued to ride these wheels. They’ve been brilliant. I’ve paired them with a set of Panaracer GravelKing SK48mm and dropped the pressure to 22psi (F) and ~25psi (R) and have been enjoying floating over rougher terrain on the gravel bike.

This wheelset has exceeded my expectations in every way. Shipping was very fast and customer service answered all my questions within hours of emailing. Out of the box the bearings spin perfectly, spoke tensions are consistent, and the spokes are all aligned.

My Conti 5000 TL tires went on without much struggle and inflated with a floor pump. On the road I found the wheels spun up quickly and felt great at speed. I don’t think about them much when riding, other than listening to that typical carbon wheel sound I love.

Definitely faster at 24mph+ than my set of 38mm carbon wheels with identical tires. I’ve only been on a few rides with the wheels but I am very happy with them. I would definitely recommend this wheelset.

Long time rider and former shop guy here. I searched around for quite a while researching and reading reviews before finally deciding on the Aero35 for a new road bike build. The 29mm/21. 5mm width of the 35’s is comparable to recent offerings by other companies claiming improved handling and aero performance and has worked quite well with a pair of older Conti 4000 tires in 25C (which inflated to 28mm on the wider rims).

The tire profile feels fast and comfortable at 55/60 psi for me at 67kg. I can attest that the tires feel very confidence inspiring in corners. The 35mm profile is a good choice for my area due the winds that often accompany our local fast descents.

The wheelset weight is substantially lighter than the wheels on my previous bike and the wheels cruise, climb, and accelerate beautifully. The asymmetric rim profile (2mm offset) of the Aero35 helps equalize spoke tension which in my experience really does improve the lateral stiffness and durability of a wheel.

I did have to do a bit of truing but nothing unexpected. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this wheelset to anyone looking for a high-performance set of wheels for general road use, training, or racing.

I had some Problems getting the tyres to fit right which might be the tyres fault (Conti 5000) after a few tries and some support from ICAN they finally went on evenly. I personally ride the Newmen Advanced R.

38 and got this set for my wife. I have to say im a little jealous now, the wheels feel super awesome, much better then my wheels in crosswinds and the Spokes are nicer too. Considering that this set is less then half the price, its really a no brainer to buy them if you are looking for a new upgrade for your bike.

I could not ask for more from a wheelset at this price. Light, responsive, amazing sound from the bearings, tires go on easy. I also had an earlier model, the 5 Evolution, lasted me almost 10 years. You will need to change the bearing every 5 years, from my experience.

Manufacturer indicates weight of 1650g. Most likely it is without freehub body. Real weight with Shimano body is 1735g (and plus 126g for quick release axles). So in total we get 1861g

This is my third set of Fulcrum wheels. Very impressed with the quality. Hubs stay smooth through miles and bad weather. Rims stay true with a good deal of abuse. Tires mount easily. Great value!

To best describe these wheals I offer this analogy: Reporter to Porsche engineer: Why do you insist on putting the engine in the rear? Every one else puts it in the front. Porsche Engineer: Because we have gotten really good at it.

Reporter to Shimano Engineer: Why do you insist on using cup and cone bearings? Every one else uses cartridge bearings. Shimano Engineer: Because we have gotten really good at it. Not the lightest, most aero, stiffest, or flashiest wheels, but the hubs! oh the Hubs! nothing runs as smooth as a high end shimano hub.

Add to that the fact that the bearings can be cleaned, replaced adjusted and lubed by the user with out special tools or fancy replacement parts.

I have had these wheels for the last two summers. I had a couple of issues that I had to take care of with them. I replaced the valve stems with ones that have removable valve cores so I could add sealant through them.

I used RSN 2X Bike Tubeless Presta Valves Stem Aluminum Hi Flo 44mm Universal Red/Black. The bearings were way too tight so I had to figure out how to adjust them. Once those issues were resolved I have enjoyed going tubeless.

I’ve had these for 5 months now. I do not care as much about the aero aspects, but they are indeed aero and I have noticed a speed increase on descents and on flats. The Industry Nine hub sounds great and is a great alternative to a bell (jk, not really).

And most importantly, they are wildly sexy, especially when complimented with an already sexy frame. Even after a few falls, they look untouched which goes to show their durability and quality of craftsmanship.

Needless to say, highly recommend.

Bought these ENVE hoops from Sigma a few weeks ago. 1st proper tubeless setup I have completed but tyres went on and inflated with std. track pump. Watch the ENVE video for tubeless tape installation as definitely helpful.

Wheels on the road are very quick – definitely noticeable vs. KSYRIUM Pro that were fitted previously and comparable to some ENVE 6. 7’s that I have been running for a couple of years. Very stiff with thru axles.

Super comfortable ride with wide rims and 25mm tyres – especially for such a deep rim wheel set. Really surprised by how these wheels roll and absorb the road. I do miss the ENVE 3x labelling however on the Foundation 65’s – not as premium product as a result which is a shame.

Does not impact performance however! Hubs are nice but not in same realm as King R45’s but understand these are built with budget in mind. Hubs spin freely and now better after 250km. Freehub is a bit loud however – coming from Chris King / Shimano this is a new experience.

Overall a great wheel set so far – they tick all the boxes and a real quality item. Not disappointed so far!.

I bought these with “compatible” Specialized Turbo RapidAir 2Bliss and they’ve been a complete nightmare. So tight! And once you’ve ripped your hands apart to put on, and find an issue with the rim tape sealing, the tires won’t come off! They’re absolutely stuck on the rim beds.

These come with tubeless tape and valves, but it would be helpful if the tubeless tape was preinstalled as they are on other brands.

I really wanted these. Bought, was satisfied. Comes with 1.85 mm spacer.

Came stock on my giant TCR. Stiff, relatively lightweight, hold tension and true fairly well. Fairly lightweight and the composite warranty from giant is great. Gives me security in my investment, since replacing one of these in the next four years would only be a couple hundred bucks at the absolute worst, and free in the first two.

Tubeless out of the box was great. Hubs/bearings are very good quality, and as a bonus sound great too. For a bike that I’d be keeping for 5 or so years, I’d happily get these as an aftermarket set. Any longer, and a company with an unlimited lifetime warranty would be more attractive to me.

Downsides – the rims seem to be set up to be the most aero with 25mm tires, and I’m running 28mm. Not a big deal, tire profile is still fine. Front was slightly off dish and a bit out of true, rear was a bit out of true out of the box.

Shop fixed those up fine after the break-in period. I dislike the internal spokes as well, since you need to retape it every time you adjust spoke tension, but after the first truing they’ve held up very nicely, so it’s not my issue.

I bought these wheels because I wanted to go tubeless. I have 2 other sets of carbon wheels. These compare very favorably. Spin up quickly. Roll very fast. Stable at speed. Very happy with these wheels.

I plan to use them as an all around wheelset. Their weight and depth make them perfect for both climbing and long rides/races as all the races I do include significant climbing. Would recommend these wheels to anyone looking for high end carbon at a very reasonable price.

Giant makes great product, the problem is they always stop short of great. These wheels came with the XTC Advance 29. My son raced on them and could not keep his speed up. Turns out though the hubs are DT Swiss, they are garbage.

Took the wheel off and rotated the axel and it was like a television dial on a 1970’s Zenith. Kept riding these wheels on one of our favorite trails and i thought I’d broken a spoke. Nope! The spoke is fine, the metal where the spoke connects to the hub failed.

6 weeks later still waiting for a warranty from Giant. Since the long wait I’ve decided to purchased a set of Mavic wheels and sell off these failures, once Giant gets around to replacing the wheel. Love Giant but will not likely buy their bikes again for anything above recreational, sub $1000.

I bought the ENVE 45 a few weeks ago and have had the opportunity to test them for about 500 miles. I have ridden them on Specialized S-Works Turbo Rapidair 2Bliss Ready 26mm tires, as recommended by ENVE list of compatible tires.

Its performance has been very good and it is remarkable when reaching speeds above 21mph. Maintaining this speed has become easier with the ENVE 45. The only problem was the mounting, the wheels had to be mounted in a bike shop.

Having had a number of issues with my Roval setting up as tubeless and always wanting a set of Enve bit the bullet. The tyre choice is limited being hookless but the Schwalbe ones went one easily, less air leakage than tubes and ride well.

While they run similar to the Rovals the tubeless experience thus far has been great – too early to say if they will be good long term investment but they feel like that right now.

Solid pair of wheels, good bearings and wide enough to avoid bulb-shaped tyres. I don’t know if “aero” is the best descriptor. I’d rather go for “wide” only. Fitting the tubeless tyres was a pain, I ended up using dishwashing liquid, three tyre levers and a friend, but I managed (they were bontrager, I recall).

Now on to the important stuff: the hub has a clickety feel, not too loud, not too quiet, pretty standard. Braking is as good as you’d expect with aluminium braking surfaces and the wheels came true and remained so after a bit over 1000km.

Beautiful light wheels to upgrade my CX/gravel bike! Mounting tubeless Schwalbe Pro 1’s on them was a snap with included valves and pre-installed tubeless rim tape. Sigma Sport handled the special order for the 12×142 through axle adapter kit needed for my bike very well.

Shipment was held until adapters received from Hunt and then installed on the wheelset (this is a pretty simple job but still nice to have it done). Love the ride on these wheels, definite improvement over the stop wheels.

I purchased the hunt aero wheelset a month ago after reading such great reviews on them. Not only are they super light but also very stiff! For the money you can’t buy lighter. They are very true, spoke tension is spot on and look amazing in Matt/satin black.

The sealed bearings are extremely smooth and should be great for longevity. A great to buy from sigma as I missed the ques and very fast delivery. A massive upgrade on my stock ksyrium wheels10/10.

I would never have purchased these wheels if I knew what I was in for. They don’t come pre taped. Every other wheelset I’ve owned came taped and I never thought about it, mount tires, get the bead sealed, add sealant, done.

Not so with these wheels. You must use their special tape, and it’s really easy to screw it up. Then maybe you run out of tape because you can’t get the tire to seal. Maybe just add some sealant? Nope, if it leaks at the valve stem you can pressurize the rim and destroy it, you have to keep re taping until you get it right, my other wheels don’t have this potential for death of wheels and humans.

So buy more tape for $50 + shipping? Maybe, but right now it’s sold out EVERYWHERE. And don’t think about using another brand of tape, enve will tell you how you’re risking the wheel blowing off the rim, potentially killing you, if you use different tape.

Maybe you got a flat and needed to put in a tube? Don’t lose the special enve valve nut and use any old valve nut, because, again, you’re risking death if you don’t use the proprietary enve “pressure relief” valve nut.

Fortunately I was able to find a pair for $17 shipped and got to wait another week to use my wheels. Maybe you stripped one of these special valve nuts by hand tightening too much in a failed effort to get the tire to seal.

Now you’ve used both of the nuts from the $17 set, hope you don’t lose or destroy another one. Oh, almost forgot about how limited the tire selection is, and if you don’t know about that and put on maybe some gp5000 tl’s you have lying around, death for you when one blows off the hookless rim while descending at 40mph.

These things are fragile and proprietary, there’s no compelling reason to buy them over the competition and so many reasons not to buy them. Don’t make my mistake.

I bought a pair of these for my ti gravel bike. Running Pathfinder Pro tyres I immediately upped my performance. Super impressed by these wheels. In fact I loved the combination so much I bought another ti bike so I could have these fitted full time.

I want to just grab the bike suited to planned route and go. HOWEVER! My new bike has Ultegra and the DT Swiss 370 rear hub does not work with 12 speed Shimano. The freehub is recessed further into the spoke flange so the RD touches the spokes.

This is a different design to other hubs. It was perfect with my GRX setup but impossible to use with 12s. So I tried a swap with a mate for some wheels he has. Again the Terra C was perfect with his GRX, but he also uses his wheels on a Focus with SRAM 11s.

Same issue: spokes hit RD in lowest gear. Problem solved by replacing the hub with a 350, an extra $469 later. I expect Roval will figure this out. Meanwhile if you know anyone in the market for an almost new 370 hub, please let me know.

I was trying to decide between the CL Alpinist and CL 50’s, and decided on the Alpinists. I have a set of 50mm rim brake wheels and I like how they hold speed but they do get pushed around with crosswinds so wanted something a little shallower for an every day wheels set.

The Alpinists are a newer design while the CL 50 have been out a while. If they had the newer design Rapide CL that so far only come with new Specialized bikes then I may have leaned more towards the Rapide CL as they claim to handle crosswinds better than the CL/CLX50.

Also, the Alpinist CL as opposed to the CL 50 have bladed spokes and are lighter. Depending on your riding style, if you are a punchy rider that likes to climb and attack then I highly recommend changing the DT Swiss ratchet out from the 18T to the 54T – takes 5 minutes and transforms the wheels to a very quick reacting set of wheels that give you instant engagement when you need it.

Go easy on the grease and you really don’t notice any extra drag. Most important tip is when you are mounting tires push the tire beads down into the inner center channel of the rims all the way around the rim, this way you can mount tires with just your hands.

I mounted S-works turbo 26mm tires and at first they wouldn’t go on and I struggled till I took the time to push the beads into the channel. I also used tubolito s-tubos and like latex you should use plenty of baby powder to mount them, I put baby powder on the tubes and the insides of the tires.

Pre-inflate the tubes to where they just barely hold their shape and the install will go smoothly. The Alpinists with the tubolitos make for a very light set of disc wheels. Like most good carbon wheels they ride very comfortably, and feel smoother than alloy wheels.

They feel solid even with hard out of the saddle efforts and they spin up really quick. In crosswinds these actually feel faster than deeper wheels as they are unfazed and let you put all your effort into just going fast.

I recently replaced the stock DT Swiss wheels that came on my 2020 Crux Comp with a set of these. After setup (Tubeless w/Panaracer Gravel King SS, 700cx38), the bike lost 1lb. The front end is so light now that on on climbs I have to purposefully add weight to it, otherwise it will lift/wheelie!!.

I did ditch the HG/3 pawl driver setup in favor of an HDR/DT Swiss 54T setup. I love the angry bee buzz the rear hub makes as it reverberates with the carbon (no need for a bike bell). So far they have tackled 800 miles of rough SoCal gravel/trail/single track and rocks mix with no problem.

Added to that, they hold a line very well (no matter the sketch level), which is confidence inspiring. On the road they are also fast, making rides in between trailheads even more awesome!!. Thanks Specialized, well done!!.

I’ve only ridden these wheels for 50 miles or so to date but initial impressions are v. good. Both wheels are still true to within half a millimetre or so and there was no spoke ‘pinging’ at all on first ride.

Braking performance in dry (no wet miles yet) with the supplied blue BXP pads is exceptionally good although the initial pad wear rate is high. The Oxic coated rims appear totally unmarked.

I purchased a Trek Emonda for exercise and weight-loss. I am a former century rider from the early 90?s and thought I would get into riding casually but later found myself drawn back to the riding community cycling more and more.

(Not a bad thing, right?) Anyhow, the Bontrager TLR?s served me well. I abused them. Initially I was significantly over the weight limit for those wheels and they held up fairly well. [greater than expected] When it came time to replace these wheels, I wanted DT Swiss because I was familiar with their reputation for building quality wheels.

DT Swiss are well known for producing excellent spokes and hubs used by competitor brands. Truthfully, I wanted a set of wheels with 240 hubs but that wheel set was out of my price range and ?well, I am still fond of abusing things and not really worrying about breaking anything but I digress.

I purchased these wheels a few months ago and have abused the mess out of them. They have served me well. They are a phenomenal wheel for the money. If you are looking for the best value at this price point, you should really consider this wheelset.

This rear wheel is incredibly smooth, spins up beautifully. Great for training, sportifs or social riding. I cannot fault this wheel. It’s better than MAVIC and SHIMANO wheels at the same price. I’m shocked by how good this wheel is and I will look at the high end racing wheels.

I endorse this product. There is nothing at this price that matches the quality of this wheel. Just unbelievably good, wow, I will buy this wheel again.

I definitely hawed and hummed b4 pulling the trigger to purchase these. Not a small investment. Santa Cruz packaging is top notch complete with signed card and picture of person who hand assembled the wheel.

Nice touch! Wheels cam pre/kitted priesta valve. Something that wasn’t clear in description (so I bought set just in case). Tubeless set up was super smooth. No issues getting the Maxxis 2. 5” to seat.

The rims look super sweet. No large stickers or logos. Just small red reserve label. The rear hub is the most notable benefit of switching to these rims. The engagement is outstanding… a game changer.

And the sweet sound that it makes! If you are looking to upgrade your ride. I would definitely give these serious consideration. The lifetime warranty doesn’t hurt!.

Google Danny MacAskill Reserve and you will see what they’re made up. Lifetime warranty. Also they are way stiffer than my old aluminum wheels and hold the line in a tight turn way better. They’re like a knife in the gravel.

Weight savings on the wheels is the most important on the bike. Shaving even a few grams here helps tremendously on the climbs. The also look sweet on my Open Upper. The i9 hub wasn’t in stock, but the DT Swiss works fine.
