20 Best Weight Distribution Hitch For Travel Trailer (2023 Updated)

I bought this for a 30 toy hauler trailer that weighs 8k pounds dry and around 10k loaded. This set with load distribution and sway control handles much more weight. Without the weight distribution my F250 truck would sag a few inches in the rear, but with this set it stays almost level by distributing weight to the trailer wheels.

See plenty of videos on YouTube about how it works. Ive driven 200 miles without much wind so I havent been able to determine how effective the sway control works but it can be upgraded to handle another friction bar.

And its safer to have it. The price of this set was the best I could find. The set arrived in a heavy duty box with thick foam and probably weighs around 150 pounds. The components are very sturdy, high quality, and easy to assemble.

Came almost assembled, took no time at all to install. It really makes a difference to the towing experience. I drag a 22 foot utility trailer around 5 days a week for work. With this fitted I collected my new travel trailer that is 32 feet long with ease.

Felt like I was pulling a trailer much smaller than it was. The parts are really good and heavy, the hitch is solid not hollow. I am really pleased with this hitch.

This is a good quality load leveler hitch that works as advertised. One big problem. The shank is too short for your tailgate to open on your pickup truck if you are pulling a travel trailer with an electric jack.

The tailgate hits the jack. I had to order the extended 14″ shank in order to allow my tailgate to open. That cost an extra $45 (10″ shank length is standard and supplied with this hitch setup).

First, the trunnion bar systems provide more ground clearance than the round bar systems, whose bars hang down below the hitch head. Second, this TruTrack system uses rigid frame brackets, eliminating the chains, which eliminates the top-of-the-frame chain-lifting brackets, and also allows for the unique built-in anti-sway feature.

The TruTrack anti-sway system uses large, spring-loaded ball bearings which seek to rest in the bottom of detents, which works to keep the trailer tongue aimed straight ahead. This also improves cornering, I’ve found.

In my case, my dump trailer has a battery/pump box located where any frame brackets need to go, so any chain system was out for me. With the TruTrack permanent frame brackets, I was able to space the box up 1 1/2″ using pressure treated 2x4s and pass the top bracket bolt through a slot I cut in the wood (see pic).

This Curt 17500 hitch is rated for 10000 pounds gross trailer weight and 1000 pounds tongue weight, and has adjustments to accommodate any situation up to those limits. Once the adjustments are made to the head, and the bolts are tightened to the 200 ft-lbs specification, the setup is rock solid.

Those claiming the adjustment fittings became distorted simply did not make the required final tightening to 200 ft-lbs, I think. Another bent and broke the tool that is supplied in the kit to lift the bars onto the frame brackets.

That tool is actually unnecessary, if you simply raise the tongue jackwith the tow vehicle coupled to the traileruntil you can easily put the bars on the brackets by hand. Stay clear of the area inside the bars as you mount them, as the anti-sway feature puts force on the bars to try to center them.

As for the Curt Manufacturing Company, all the Curt products I’ve used have been top quality and heavy duty, including their drop shanks.

I purchased the Curt 17500 based on the heavy duty set up it offers. Not to mention it is HEAVY! I set it up per the instructions and torqued everything to the instructed specs. I took it for a 40 mile test run in 35 mph cross winds and the anti-sway worked like a champ! But upon returning I noticed that the washers with the studs that holds the hitch head tilt were contorted and bent as well as the adjustment holes on the hitch head being stretched and oblong! Very poor and unsafe design.

I contacted Curt and they said I probably didn’t tighten to specs which I did with a calibrated torque wrench. They then offered to send me another set of washers with the studs which in my opinion is a temporary fix for a disaster waiting to happen.

I now have a $400 120lb boat anchor sitting in the corner of my shop. $500 later I purchased the Equalizer 4way 12000lb and it is by far a better system.

Works ok. But a few part look to be wearing a bit fast so I recommend having a few replacement parts on hand just in case. The pitch adjustment locks on the top bolts and the the adjustment L bracket for the sway bars that attach to the rv.

But for the price its a Good setup.

I have nothing but positive to address with this Sway Control Trunnion Hitch. I have a half ton Ram that pulls a 3500 lb travel trailer. Running at 70 mph and being passed, either oncoming or from behind, almost no movement in the trailer.

You can feel just a slight movement, but no more than if I was in the truck without trailer. I had the hitch installed professionally by the RV dealership. Watching the process seemed fairly straight forward.

Only issue would be measuring the distance from hitch ball to the exact same point on the A-frame of the trailer. I would highly recommend this system.

My trailer has about a 440 lb. Toungue weight so I bought the 600 lb. rated hitch. Online ordering was easy, pick up at the store was easy. I took it to a professional hitch dealer/installer to have it set up because I don’t have the proper torque wrenches.

They initially told me it was “junk” and would squeak when I turn but they probably just wanted to make themselves feel better about the more expensive hitches they sell. Anyway, the guy that put it on told me afterward that it is a good hitch and was easy to install.

He even showed me a trick how to hook up the trunions without needing the pry bar. The trailer is about 4000 lbs. fully loaded and my TV is a Tacoma V6. The hitch arrests all of the sway and makes the trailer very smooth to tow.

This was the first weight distribution hitch, and I am very satisfied. I made a 1200 mile trip and this made the drive much smoother than just using a standard ball hitch alone. We went through icy and snowy roads, winds, etc, and it made the drive much easier.

Installation was fairly simple. I am deducting one star because they neither include their special socket for installing the ball hitch nor do they make it easy to purchase it. I couldn’t purchase the kit with the pre-installed ball because my horse trailer has a 2” hitch.

Finding someone that could install the ball was a huge pain and inconvenience. They could have easily designed the main hitch to not require a special socket, or included it in the kits that do not have balls pre installed.

I would recommend this hitch but please be aware of this issue before purchasing.

Heavy-duty weight distribution and sway control system. Unbelievably easy to install. Took less than 30 minutes. Read the directions first and follow them. After installation. Back up vehicle and connect to trailer.

Snap the arms into hitch. Jack trailer and truck up until the arms swing into place. Drop “L” brackets in place and pin with “R” pins. Raise Jack off the ground and drive away.

This is mostly well-constructed, indeed so much weight of steel that you might find it a bit difficult to carry when removing it from your vehicle. There are two buttons that hold the torsion bars in, and they are very easy to pull off of this device accidentally while removing the bars and then you have to move a leaf spring with a pry bar to re-attach them.

They should be captive. That they are not is a serious design flaw IMO. If anyone took them while you were on the road with a trailer, and you did not notice, the torsion bars would be liable to fall out while towing, and bang around at high speed just where you have a pair of gas bottles on the trailer tongue.

Some people put pipe clamps over the buttons to deter the casual vandal. The torsion bars end up a lot lower than the hitch ball and might present a ground clearance problem. Blue Ox brags that you don’t have to adjust the bar angles, but the cost of this is reduced ground clearance.

Looks very nice. I have been towing trailers with WHD’s for over 30 years, always used the chain type. Reading other reviews, this is the way to go. Haven’t used it yet, but I believe I’m going to like it.

People say it makes noise, if it does, I’ll get used to it.

This is so much higher quality than the one we had before, don’t have to worry about the legs falling down I’m being dragged! It’s just not possible with this one! Driving my camper home!

Hae not used it yet, but it appears to be very high quality and heavy duty. Hope to assemble and try it out soon.

This kit was exactly what I was looking for to use with my 26′ Salem Edge travel trailer. It is an all-in-one kit that covers both the stabilizer (up and down bouncing) side as well as the sway (side to side motion) bar.

There is minimal assembly and it is very heavy duty. I pulled the trailer 600 miles on freeways at speeds of 70mph with my Chevy 1/2 ton and it worked beautifully. I cannot think of one negative for this kit as it is half as much as anywhere else I looked.

I sold my bigger travel trailer and sold this kit with it but I plan on purchasing another one for the smaller hunting trailer I purchased.

This system is heads and tails above what what used to be the best system including the load levelers and the sway bars from husky. Bought a used trailer with the sway bars and load levelers from Husky and after the first trip was ready to hand my keys to anybody that would take them.

I refused to do another trip until I got something that would keep this trailer under control bought this with some reservation and I’m here to tell you it rocked our world! Not a single F bomb even when being passed by two semi’s on both my left and right.

It really made a difference and kept me in the driver seat!.

10K Equal-i-zer EXPLODED and damaged my RV. The “lifetime warrenty” does not cover a replacement hitch or the damages the TOTAL FAILURE of my EQUAL-I-ZER did to my RV. Turns out they use cast parts instead of milled stock.

The cast parts explode if you hit a dip in the road and send sway bars flying. Ram 1500 & Cougar Half-ton. The set up was professionally installed and the rig had over 20k miles before it EXPLODED.

Do yourself a favor and buy the one with the pre-installed ball! I made the mistake of buying this one and have run into MANY installation problems. 1st, nobody locally has the right size ball in the right length shank.

2nd next we have to buy a 1 7/8″ socket to tighen it down. Needless to say we couldn’t get it on my trailer in time for the big haul due to said problems so we have not been able to use it yet therefore we can’t review anything else about it.

This hitch performed as advertised, and enabled me to tow my large trailer with less sway and it evened my truck out. It is very heavy-duty and looks well made. the only problem I have with the product is rotating cam latch.

Latching and unlatching can become dangerous, as the cam becomes uncontrollable as it rotates even after most hitch pressure is released from the torsion arms. I use a bottle jack hitching and unhitching to help control the pressure from the arms and to keep things safe during the process.

Even with this issue it is still the heaviest duty hitch with built in sway control on the market that I have found available, that can handle a 2000 to tongue weight.

Was curious why the reviews are so bad for the Andersen hitch. Turns out that 2-3 of the reviews are about Bumper Superstore and have absolutely nothing to do with this hitch. Will update this post when I have more experience with the HITCH.

They charged my credit card immediately upon placing the order. Over 2 weeks later and I still have not received a single response about where my order is. I have emailed twice and only received what appear to be automated responses with no information.

Tried calling their support line 3 times and waited in a que to speak with a representative, 1st just over an hour, 2nd just over an hour, 3rd just over 2 hours and never got to speak with anyone. I still have no idea when or if I will actually receive the product I ordered.

I switched from a Reese Dual Cam to the Equalizer and am I glad I did. What a difference the Equalizer made. Never felt comfortable towing two different trailers with the Dual Cam. Both were set up professionally.

Reese requested photos of my set up yet never responded so I gave up on them. Best thing I ever did. With the equalizer I can sit back and enjoy towing my 33ft trailer without having white knuckles. Wish I bought this years ago.

Bought a travel trailer down in NM oil field country. picked up a weight distribution at HF and put it the truck. some ask why I needed it. when pulling a trailer in the desert there are can be winds and gusts at times on the service roads and highways where these oil and gas rigs are located,not mention NM in general.

A distribution hitch will help stabilize the load and distribute the weight ( 5300 lbs in my case ) sure enough the winds came the trailer held nice and steady on the gravel service roads and rough pavement of US highway 62.

I checked the rigging three times and was still very tight after the rough gravel road and rough U. S. highway 62, then home 250 miles. it was rough drive at first most people will never dive in oil field country though roads like that with a 5300 lbs.

travel trailer. This distribution hitch did very, very well ,not bad for not having a sway bar hooked up either which I forgot at home. Proved and tested in the Oil and Gas fields of New Mexico. I’ll bring you buyers up to speed here the only thing I can say to improve this rig is longer chain length.

The 3/8 that come with it are to short (1 foot long). Make these 18 -24″ inches and you got a winner. I picked up some 3/8 chains cut 24″ at Lowes. this on the advise from other here on the HF comments board which saved me a trip.

So HF did go back to the 3/8 chains , they are heavy duty but to short for me.

Bought this when it was on sale and it was the last one 1 hour after the store doors opened. You can find it’s twin online for 2-3 times the price. It IS heavy. Follow the good instructions. Extras needed: grease gun, lg-med flat tip screwdriver, 2 lg & 1 sm adjustable wrench, large pipe wrench if adjustable is too small for the ball hitch, and lastly a third hand is VERY convenient.

Make sure your electrical cable is up and away from the hitch, it will cut the cable on sharp turns. I pulled a 24′ cargo trailer filled with household furniture and boxes (hard to balance the weight) probably overweight, with a Ram 1500 with no problems.

However, I did attach a sway bar from HFT that truly kept the swaying under control. I know it works because I pulled that very same trailer, packed, with and without the hitch. BIG difference. Considering all the things that could have gone wrong without this hitch, yeah I’m a very happy customer !.

Very good construction. As good as a Reese Hitch or any other hitch maker. Chains were the correct size and not too small of a diameter as others have stated. Others have noted that you have to have something handy to pry out the spring lock pins.

NOT SO! Once the spring is locked in place all you have to do to unlock it is rotate the spring outward away from the tongue about 50 degrees and the pin will unlock itself. You can see the pin move out as you do so and the spring will drop out of the hole.

Just like a Reese Hitch. If you look at the groove in the spring where the pin locks in you’ll see that the groove is ramped at the end to push the pin out and unlock it. I do believe that the manual says to pry out the lock but again, it’s not necessary.

Seems like whoever is making this for Harbor Freight neglected to make them aware of this. Great hitch, great price, easy set up. I highly recommend it.

Using on a 2017 Rockwood A212HW. Weighs just under 3300 lbs fully loaded. Pulling with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. Although Toyota recommends sway control when towing over 2000 lbs, I went without for a while.

Finally got this and the difference is night and day! Easy installation if you have all the tools. Works just as advertised. Very happy with it as well as Bumper Superstore’s great customer service.

Watch the videos so you understand how it works. I used it to keep a huge trailer load legal, transferring enough weight forward to stay within tongue and rear-axle limits. Not to mention the improved stability on marginal pavement that might cause sway.

And the trick of jacking it up high enough to loosen the chains and easily remove it when dropping the trailer is very handy and simple. It backs up marvelously without touching the hitch. Remarkable engineering indeed.

The hitch assembly is very well made and engineered. The spring clips that hold the bars in place are very hard to use. I use the hitch to pull a show car trailer and it looks very nice when all rigged up.

My tow vehicle is a 1/2 ton pickup, the black paint looks good and matches the factory hitch receiver very well. I will get another sway controller for longer trips.

It definitely does help. The bounce control is excellent. However disappointed in the sway control. I tow a 29 foot Jayco with slide out has a dry wgt. of 7000 pounds. My tow vehicle is a Lincoln navigator.

If I had a better tow vehicle it probably would not be such an issue. the kit came with only one sway break which does not do much for the swaying. I added a second additional sway break which helped a lot.

One problem is when you head this way brake on fall turning is very difficult. Are usually only tighten them right before I get on the highway. I am buying a More expensive brand and returning these.

This hitch system is well make and sturdy. It should last a lifetime. This hitch system makes the trailer and truck a rigid unit while still allowing for trailer swing and some up and down movement. This has the effect of distributing the trailers weight more evenly onto the front and rear of the truck.

That in turn makes the truck handle more like normal and it is less noticeable that you are towing anything. You can tell that the hitch has distributed the towed weight evening onto the truck as the truck does not droop down at the rear.

Read the instructions, set up as instructed then tow the trailer around for a half hour (including 15 min on an expressway) or on one of your trips. Change the chain tension each trip and you will find the best settings for your trailer/tow vehicle.

As a bonus you also get a sway bar. Make sure that you also install that as well. It is worth the effort as it eliminates sway, especially sway occurring when passing (or being passed by ) semi= trucks.

All this at an extremely low price. LIFE IS GOOD !.

The product is very good but the instructions are incomplete. Getting the proper alignment is very confusing. Trying to get an angle of 10 to 13 degrees without a reference point is very difficult. An actual measurement instead would make things a lot easier and more accurate.
