20 Best Weed And Feed For Southern Lawns (2023 Updated)

My house is in a new build subdivision and I have right at a half acre. Like most subdivisions the land is old pasture field and had tons of weeds. The builders only sod about 50 feet and the rest they lay seed and straw.

They did not treat the soil to my knowledge before laying sod. We closed in November of 2020 so the next spring our yard was basically a weed field. So we turned to tru green’ our first mistake. Their weed and feed is an awful mixture, it really did not work as they described and we just had a bad experience.

So fall of 2021 I decided to take care of the lawn myself. I bought the bio advanced weed and feed and laid the first application and by mid October our grass looked great. So this spring I have used it again and our grass is healthy and very few weeds.

I just pull them up if I notice them. I will apply two yearly from hear on out. It takes about 5 of the big bags to do the whole lawn. Takes care of crabgrass and dandelions, basically any standard pasture weed.

I will definitely recommend to anyone looking to stop using lawn care services that charge a fortune for low range results. Our grass is green and healthy and one of the best in the neighborhood.

I am giving my review for the 5 in 1 weed and feed I received. I had to put it down a little late in the season because I had already put down a fertilizer prior to hearing about this. It seemed to kill all of the weeds except the ivy that I have.

I don’t blame the product as nothing seems to get rid of ivy so I didn’t expect it to. We had a bad drought this year and I do not have lawn sprinklers for watering. So I didn’t see much difference in how thick the grass got.

I suspect it is still in shock from the unusual summer we had. I also suspect that my soil may be acidic and in need of some lime which would have helped the fertilizer work better. Overall I think it would have worked better if I could have waited a couple more weeks before reviewing and was able to put it down earlier in the season.

I have had luck with Bayer products in the past and would still give this a shot next year. I think this year’s circumstances were unfair to the product. being tested. An update to this review: after a few more weeks my lawn looks nice and green, supporting my previous claim about it being in shock from the drought.

The BioAdvanced 5 In 1 Weed & Feed is a good product to kill crabgrass. This product contains 9. 6 pound granules, which kills lawn weeds. It prevents new weeds, too. This product kills crabgrass. This product states it prevents new crabgrass.

And it states it feeds and greens up to 3 months. The product was easy to apply. Just put the granules into a fertilizer lawn spreader and apply to your lawn. I noticed after a week, that my crabgrass was killed.

It states to apply in spring or early summer, even if crabgrass and weeds have already sprouted. It doesn’t matter. Since this product is both a preventer and killer. The product states one application gets results and I agree, as of this time.

I recommend this product.

I have been using Jonathan Green products for a number of years now. As a lawn enthusiast I am extremely happy with the results that are produced. By simply following Jonathan Green instructions for the New American Lawn I get amazing results, results that receive comments from many neighbors, friends, etc.

I highly recommend anyone to try these products and see the results.

Works good. It rained a day and a half after application and the dandelions are fighting to come back. A second application should do the trick and kill them off

Works pretty good on most weeds but struggles with woodsorrel. Be careful on how much you pay for this stuff! Wal Mart sells it for about $8 for 32 oz. Just checked the Wal Mart website and it is being advertised for $25 , but being fulfilled by somebody else.

This is a bit different of a process than I’m used to with my lawn care, the application timing is a lot later than previous treatments. I like to get a good start on lawn care so using this so much later made me a bit uneasy, applying it while the weeds are growing as directed doesn’t leave much wiggle room for adjustments if anything goes wrong- not impossible but not ideal or easy when your in ths thick of it.

I am definitely starting to notice how well the lawn likes the food, the weeds are less as well. I like the ease of application, once you get timing and conditions from mother nature its a breeze. The 3 in one benefits are nice and while it has improved my lawn, it doesn’t give me the full effects Id prefer given the price and amount product needed.

On top of time and energy still needed to put into seedig and the additional applications it isnt the best product for my needs. I received a free sample to review and since the area the bag covered did have results it’s not a dud- but not enough for me to buy more to adequately cover my entire lawn for the season.

I reseeded my lawn by the book last fall (Oct 17) using a slit seeder and Titan Tall fescue seed. By March/April my grass was amazing, the best in the neighborhood. Thick green and lush! I applied Preen One in March ( I am in Charlotte NC) to take advantage of its pre-emergent as well as existing weed control.

The few weeds that I had were gone within a couple of weeks and the grass looked great. I had to mow it twice a week. Then 8 wks later I applied Preen one again, as recommended, and as directed. Within two weeks large patches of my grass were turning brown.

Now it looks terrible. We have had plenty of rain, and I cannot fathom any other reason for the dead grass. I am very disappointed after spending so much time and money this year to finally have a great lawn.

I’m excited to really see the results as it’s too early to really tell however the directions are clear and application was very simple. Our yard is covered with dandelions and other unwanted weeds in between so this seems to be exactly what we need.

This GreenView Fairway Formula Spring Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer works great. It is a good quality lawn fertilizer. It made the lawn greener and thicker. My yard needed help and I have been impressed with how much and how quickly this has helped it.

I love that it has the crabgrass preventer in it, so I don’t have to use different products. It prevents crabgrass for 120 days, and provides slow release nitrogen for extended feeding up to 12 weeks.

It was very easy to use too. I would definitely recommend it.

I wouldn’t blame this product for the lack of progress it made on the lawn since dandelion are the hardest to get rid of. Since I bought my house no matter how frequent I mow the lawn they always return.

I was having high hopes but all this product did was wilt them a little that day and then sprung back the next day. It was suppose to be a weed killer plus grass feeder but somehow it kill some places and made dead brown patches in my lawn.

Maybe I’ll have to try light sprinkle the next time around and see it goes that time around.

This is a great product and I always start off Spring spreading weed and feed fertilizer for my lawn. I always have good luck using this product. Eliminate the weeds and add fertilizer for optimal growth.

It very easy to spread using my speed spreader. After I applied to my lawn I had a couple of days light rain that broke down the pellets quickly. Now I will sit back and get the mower ready to start mowing.

I sought this product out to de-weed my small yard, mostly from dandelions and also help feed the grass. I used as per the instructions and applied after a light rain about a month ago, so far there has not been any new weeds popping up, so that is a major plus and my grass is really coming in lush in areas that were lacking the nutrients it needed.

It has been raining a lot in my area so once the spring showers have moved on I will be reapplying and I’m pretty sure my weed problem will be fixed. Definitely glad I found this product.

I am amazed that after one application I was able to see the results that I have. Our lawn service has been treating the lawn for weeds since early spring, roughly 3 months. Yet we aren’t seeing any grass growth, just weeds.

They literally come every 2 weeks to cut JUST weeds. And within a few days the weeds continue to grow?? I had my lawn guy stop whatever it was that he was using and apply the Pennington UltraGreen Southern Weed & Feed.

I bought a jug of Gordon’s Weed & Feed to try last fall. I have been using Scott’s fertilizer for several years but the last two years it seems to me that Scott’s has quit working like it use to and doesn’t touch killing the clover.

One treatment of the Gordon’s has made a world of difference to my lawn. I just put a spring treatment of Gordon’s on 3 days ago. Lawn is looking really well and getting thicker. I highly recommend the Gordon’s Weed & Feed 15-0-0.

I live in a neighborhood therefore I do have a small yard. Purchased a backpack sprayer because the handheld sprayers do not hold enough for a good application. I spray mid March and again mid to late April.

It works great on weeds and helps my lawn become thick and green. Definitely recommend to all my neighbors.

I was having trouble with sand burs and stickers in my lawn for several summers. I used a preemergent and Roundup before the season, but I wanted something to help kill them during the summer. I had been told that a thicker lawn would help.

I used Weed & Feed 2 times during the summer, and didn’t cut my lawn as short. I had very few problems with the stickers, and other weeds, this summer. Adding this product is the main thing I did different than in previous years.

I wish it was a higher concentration so the jug would last longer.

This is carried by our big box and mom and pop hardware stores here. It has no phosphates which makes it fish and aquatic friendly. Spread over a lawn that has early spring bulbs (snow drops, crocuses, muscari and dwarf irises) within the grass.

I feel it actually improved the growth of not only the grass but the performance of my spring bulbs. Used along the edge where our fruit trees (cherry, espalier apple and plum) are and it helped their spring budding as well.

Since it doesn’t have the weeding chemicals in it I didn’t hesitate to use it.

We are so happy that we found this natural product to use on our grass that will not hurt any of the wildlife including our beehive. It makes our grass greener and fuller. We would recommend and we would buy again.

The Corn Gluten Fertilizer came quickly and when I sent an email questioning the use of it in both FALL and SPRING, I received a personal response very quickly! I cannot provide a review on the product YET, must see results first.
