20 Best Waterproofing Spray For Jackets (2023 Updated)

I bought the two products you advise to take care of a waterproof jacket (Reversible raincoat – Sunglow) recently because, given the way that the world is going these days, when I actually need to use these products, ‘supply chain issues’ will probably mean that they are no longer available’.

So, can’t review the products but expect them to do what they say on the pack. As I now cannot get out of this rigmarole I will have to put something against the Size – Quality – Would Recommend boxes that is meant to indicate ‘don’t know yet – time will tell’ but that option is not available.

I hope you will understand. Sadly, I will be unsubscribing from your pleasant but persistent emails as, like most people I buy from these days (from Waitrose to Hotter shoes), they clutter up my inbox and take up too much of my valuable time.

I will continue to look at your range of clothing as and when this may be appropriate but, for the time being, it’s been nice knowing you but please don’t bother me any more with your emails. Thank you.

Having used the tech wash then this product as per instructions to try and reproof my tin cloth rain jacket, I found the coat actually less waterproof than before. I got totally soaked, albeit in heavy rain, over 100 metres.

That was the distance to the shop to which I reported the problem, to be met with a couldn’t care less rather rude response. Back home I emailed customer care about the problem. The email wasn’t even acknowledged, never mind replied to.

This was about a year ago and, finding you’ve still got this product on sale, I thought I’d try again. I can only surmise that most of the good reviews had tested their coats in rain. Bearing my previous experiences in mind, I don’t think this review will be published (it might be acknowledged if I’m really lucky).

As a customer for many years, I’m very disappointed in you Seasalt. And, sadly I haven’t bought very much from you since, as this has shadowed my previously excellent experience of your shop.

First time using Nixwax Rug Proof. Did 10 Blankets, 7 of them seem to be waterproof again. The 3 that are not are all Showman rain sheet, which I have a lot to complain about already, so I am blaming the Showman on not waterproofing since the other 7 blankets ( all different brands, different ages) are 100% waterproof again.

The rains sheet are about 70% water now so that is a big improvement. I did my blankets by soaking them in a brand new muck bucket. It was a lot of work and I am not doing it that way ever again. If you have one or two it would be fine.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I noticed that the bottle does not contain the amount it says it does. It says it has 34 oz. That should be perfect for 2 uses at the recommend 17 oz per blanket.

It contains 32 oz, 16oz per blanket. Seemed to work just as well with 16 oz instead of 17 but still. Come on guys. Can we get 100% Honesty on how much is in a bottle?.

I went to Juneau Alaska for 9 days and it rained the entire first day we were there and my Gortex jacket was soaked within the first hour. I hadn’t recoated it in years so I bought this product in the large spray bottle and applied 3 coats per the instructions after I washed the jacket to ensure it was clean.

It rained the rest of the time we were there and this coated did absolutely nothing. The jacket was soaked within the first 30 minutes. The jacket feels like it has a coating on it but it doesn’t repel water at all.

Complete waste of time and money.

The Obenauf silicone watershield works as advertised! The only reason I did not rate it a 5 was the spray bottle which was mentioned in other reviews clogged after the second application to a second pair of shoes.

I had another spray bottle that I was able to transfer the spray and it works great. I’ve been out in the snow and slush and the watershield keeps my leather shoes looking great. Good product but the spray bottle should be better.

Bought 8oz. bottle along with some new boots. Halfway through the spraying of my boots, the pump spray head started acting up. First it was an uneven spray and then no spray at all. Pump head is now not pumping the product.

If you cant get the product out of the bottle in a quality manner then what good is it? Very disappointed. I am taking it back for a refund. I will stick with what I have used in the past. Its more expensive but very reliable.

It worked great on a variety of materials, winter boots, winter gloves, snowpants etc. It was a smaller sized bottle than I thought it would be, but it is worth the price as it is cheaper than replacing all the items I waterproofed.

It has a strong lingering smell so make sure you use the spray in the garage or outdoors. I left the items hanging in my garage for days before bringing them inside. Would buy again.

This really saved not only my shoes but my carpet also. Want to save your fabric or shoes this works great. (at time you might need to reapply) but it really saves you from nasty stains wipes right off.

I used this product for the fabric cover of my 14ft boat. It works very well and I would buy it again. Be aware, however, that the coverage on fabric is not very good (could be that I applied more than I had to).

I bought three bottles and it was not enough. Will need to order more. Would be nice if they had bigger bottles.

I bought this to use on golf shoes that were letting in water on rainy days. It’s easy to use and did a great job. I’ve played twice in wet conditions and the shoes have remained dry and comfortable.

So far I’ve used it on two pairs of shoes and my golf bag and there is still loads left. Very pleased with this product and I highly recommend it.

Brilliant it puts a barrier on everything its used on so stops marketing easily. I use it on all my leather handbags, leather suite. It can be used on suede, material many many things. Just need a light spray and top up occasionally.

I used it on a jacket because it was predicted to rain on our trip. Definitely apply it outdoors or someplace well-ventilated because it takes a while for the chemical smell to dissipate. I applied two coats of the spray to my hooded coat, it took a full 24 hours to not be stinky, but I was totally waterproof! Side note- do not apply spray on windy days, the liquid won’t make it to your fabric and you will be wet next rainstorm.

It works! I applied it to several shoes. The shoes were worn on a snowy day and the feet remained dry. Easy to use. Yields well. I still don’t know how many uses the protection works without reapplying.

The smell is not very pleasant, but it is only felt during application. Then the smell disappears.

Myself and my family use Scotchguard and trust it for shoes, boots, coats and outdoor fabric. Makes cleaning simple as you only need to wipe down items with cloth. Does not have oder after drying and does not create yellow film like misc off brands.

One coat in a well ventilated area will keep your items dry but a thin second coat after first dries is okay.

I bought two cans to waterproof a jacket, visor, gloves, and shoes for a run this weekend. I tested the visor and it original beaded up but then after the beads remain, the water was absorbed into the material.

Needless to say, after our run, we were drenched. This stuff does not work at all. Pay the extra money and buy the silicone spray. This is a waste of money.

It’s worth getting! I sprayed my boots with it and so far it is working through harsh Northern New York winter weather

Works on most fabrics and any product, not just tents. Easy to apply and dries quickly

I used the Tech wash first per Nikwax instructions. Then used the Nikwax wash-in. I had one item, followed all directions and the results were good. However, in some areas where there were NO tears or wear on the fabric and it was very clean from the Nikwax Techwash, it still took on some small amount of water when I tested it out.

I am overall happy with what was made water repellent and my testing was harsh – used cold flowing water from a spigot over areas like the sleeves, back and shoulders where the DWR was no longer working at all.

I am going to buy some direct spray and touch up the weak areas. Also, it may be the quality of stitching and sealing on the sleeve edges but they still got a little wet and I suspect being edges of sleeves have some slight fraying not readily visible to me.

I had purchased this item before. I used it on my custom made car cover, which is a fabric. When I first sprayed it on it looked wet, but dried like I never sprayed it on. When it rained, the water just beaded up and ran off.

Like a good wax on your car does. Two cans covered the complete car cover. I will see how long it last before I have to coat it again. I am very happy so far with this product.

We’ve used this several years ago to waterproof a 15+year old tent and had acceptable results. This time when the tent started leaking again we didn’t have the same good results after application. While the leaks/seepage were greatly reduced the tent was not completely waterproofed as in the past.

So it seems it works OK for moderate jobs it did not fully waterproof on the “heavy duty” job. We used 4 cans. Each had different degrees of “clogging”. Product would end up dripping from can or forming large droplets instead of a fine mist.

This occurred even after periodically stopping to shake cans during application. I even washed the nozzle with warm water and dish soap in effort to clean the nozzle several times. Instead of continuing to apply a product shown to not be getting the job done, I’ve gone on to use a different brand product.

The application process was like night and day. The other product had a much smoother application process. While not field tested yet; based on the coverage and application process I am much more confident we will have better results from the competitor’s product.

Price was very comparable and I will not be using this Silicone Water-Guard water repellent in the future.

I have used this brand for literally decades and to this day it is still the absolute best thing – even exceeds Scotchguard products – I have ever used to waterproof things (and no, I have not received anything in return for this review.

) I have used it on leather workbooks, tents, backpacks, etc. Even with the larger cans I usually buy a 1/2 or 1 dozen cans at a time because a) we have large tents, popup canopies, my kid’s school and hiking backpacks, our bicycle saddlebags, etc.

and b) so we always have plenty on hand when we need it. The best thing is that it dries and sets fast (our last application a few days ago went on in the early afternoon and it started to rain by dinnertime – no issues) and it breathes, which reduces sweat buildup in your boots or condensation in your tents.

But I also like the fact that it’s non-toxic and that the cans use CO2 as a propellant instead of CFCs, so it is safer for the environment. I cannot recommend this product enough.

This particular Grangers product restores waterproofing to almost all performance outerwear. We prefer this spray-on waterproofing to similar products used in the washing machine because we didn’t want to take the chance to gum up our very expensive washer.

We used this spray on product to restore our 30 year old, vintage mountain parkas. It did its job perfectly when applied as directed. We used about a half bottle for a single, size M women’s, hip length mountain parka with hood.

In our case, the parkas have a cotton outer shell and a wool lining (yes, wool can be washed successfully). We laundered them with Grangers wash and then applied the spray-on Performance Repel Plus waterproofing to the damp garments and let them air dry.

The waterproofing finish is perfect and even with zero blotches. It completely re-waterproofed our garments. We were able to test the waterproofing recently in the pouring rain and the water simply beaded off the jackets.

We’re over the moon to be able to use our favorite vintage parkas for what will now be forever. We’re ordering more from this seller because we like to wash our outerwear at least once a hiking season.

Every time we wash the parkas they lose their waterproofing. The Grangers product solves the waterproofing problemperfectly. We also prefer the Grangers brand to Nikwax, which seems to have application problems that we wanted to avoid because, well, we’re not yet ready to part with our vintage parkas.

previously tried mw branded proofer, that the shop manager told me was actually manufactured by grangers. (the jacket version was more resilient than the cheaper boot version). then pitted mw against the grangers plus.

proofed sample cotton rag with three light spray coats (dried between coats) then syringed 10ml water on top of each. timing how long it took to soak into/through the material. the grangers plus kept the water absorption at bay much longer.

5 hours compared to 3 hours for the mw. (grangers plus on the left in the photo. mw extreme on the right) nb the manufacturers claims of how many garments you can spray per bottle are exaggerated. to do the job properly i used a whole 275ml bottle to cover a codura motorcycle jacket.

hence 4 stars. and im guessing another further coating would be beneficial.

The four bottles, 2″D x 9″, we’re placed in a 12’x13’x6′ box between a folder crumpled plastic sheeting with each bottle in its own cheesy thin heat sealed leaky bag. So, the bottles just have a hand tight, maybe, sprayer to stop it from leaking.

In my case half of them arrived empty, with neither of their individual bags retaining much of the liquid from the bottle. I have lots of sea to summit stuff which I typically purchased from amazon or REI, but never directly from sea to summit.

I seriously doubt I would have encountered this problem if I’d purchased from them, but will in the future.

The wash itself seemed good and got the jacket nice and clean. Afterwards i sprayed it with the waterproofing solution as per instructions and allowed it air dry. The next rainy cycle day I put on my jacket and travelled to work, half way through my 45 min commute the jacket was wetting out which i think affected the breathability so got to work feeling fairly damp.

That said, when I contacted Showers Pass I was very impressed with the level service from Fraser, who seemed to go ‘above and beyond’. Even going to the point of sending me a postage label to send back my jacket for reproofing.

Ive now received the jacket and am waiting for another rainy day cycle ( shouldn’t have to wait too long) to test it out.

This product works really well for re-waterproofing my 15 year shell. My jacket would wet through after a rain storm but after apply this product water beads off like a brand new jacket. The process is simple: clean jacket in washer with liquid detergent, rinse well, spray product and put in dryer.

I have been using Revivex water repellant for years – mainly on breathable waders and raincoats and other outdoor gear subjected to wind and heavy rain. It is nice to stay dry during such conditions and this repellant does the trick.

Sprayed 4 pair shoes, dries clean, without staining or residue marks. Works well in west indes around light rain.

In order to be an effective water repellent, need to apply multiple treatments. Contents of can go pretty quick.

The best waterproofer and protector. Fabulous for Vachetta leather too. I use it on bags, shoes, trainers, outdoor cushions….. if it doesnt move quickly it gets carbon prod !

I always use Collonil products on my leather footwear and handbags. Bought to spray a new bag, managed to test it a few days later when it rained, bag was dry and didn’t show any signs of the rain drying out the leather.

I’ve long used Nikwax products for cleaning and treating down, outerwear fabrics, and tent flys. When I saw Polar Proof I was intrigued. Fleece fibre doesn’t absorb water, but the garment can wet out as water seeps in between the fibres of the fleece.

The garments I’ve treated are a new and old Patagonia pullover, hat, gloves, and mitts. As a test beforehand I put water drops onto the fabric. They (as expected) worked their way “into” the fabric, wetting it out.

After the wash with Polar Proof, the same test had the water beading on the surface, even after sitting for a while. This treatment will help keep the fleece from wetting out and also easily shed snow when otherwise unprotected.

Time will tell on the durability of the treatment. I suspect the garments will need washing before the treatment diminishes. Unknown to me is whether the treatment survives a general wash too. It could be expensive if the garments need treating with each wash.

Used it several times now, every time I’m left with a garment that beads water and stays dry for a decent amount of time. It has it’s limits but it’s the best product out there in it’s category. I also use it on things like DWR treated pants so that they still wick moisture from the inside (specifically Prana and Mountain Hardwear pants).

I’ve used both Grangers and Nikwax on my technical apparel and have found both to be evenly matched. I gave this one a shot with my North Face softshell. It does the job but you’ll need to use a performance wash first.

No issues with colour running and it reproofs the waterproofing to a degree. I don’t have many softshells, so this wash might not be worth it.

I would say it is so-so. I used half a can on my cabelas shoes and the spray does say safe for use on goretex. Water resistance with those as well as my everyday shoes I also sprayed 3 coats on dont seem to be any different.

either they need one entire can per pair of shoes or it doesnt work- HAHA I do know that they are much easier to clean than before so I am assuming there is a good coat of something there.

I use this product to waterproof my motorcycle riding suit. Granted, my Klim gear has a pretty good reputation for shedding rain but, after a couple of years of wear and any number of washings, it can always use some “assistance.

” I started using Protex because I got tired of the ___wax products since I never saw any benefits from using them. My gear soaked through in no time. Protex has done a great job for me. I spray it on after I’ve washed my riding gear with a detergent designed for waterproof materials and a day or so before my ride.

It goes on easily and, after a few minutes, the surface of my gear is dry to the touch. My last ride was to Ireland and the UK where it rained probably 3/4 of the time. I was totally dry the whole time.

In terms of cost, I think the Protex 500ml can will handle 3 or 4 (or more) separate coatings of your riding jacket and pants, if not more. I’ve found the cost is at least comparable to the ___wax products, if not better, based on the number of uses I get.

Have been using this product for a long time, always cover my bikes with this for winter storage, then in Spring bikes 🏍 are like new, and ready to ride, of course after mechanical checking

Having bought the RainSeal spray on more than one occasion I can assure you that it’s pointless. It doesn’t repel any more than a cap full of water. Save your money and buy a high quality rain sealant from a camping store.

Nikwax was about the only product I found to clean and treat my Gore Tex rain suits. Haven’t had the opportunity to test the performance. My disappointment came in the packaging. To wash, use half of the cleaning bottle.

To treat, use a whole bottle. I had two loads of stuff to wash and treat. So then I had to go find a second bottle of just the treatment product. It was almost as much as buying the pair. They should assume if you are taking the time to wash stuff, you will treat it at the same time.

1 bottle of washing detergent + 2 bottles of treatment should be a standard package.

Bought to waterproof a pair of pants. Followed instructions to the letter. Seems to outperform the Grainger’s a little bit, but while some water beaded off, the pants were not nearly restored to a new state and still wetted out fast.

I’m always cynical of “”water proofing”” sprays and their effective longevity. To my pleasant surprise Badlands has delivered a product that stands out and is truly effective for an extended duration.

Following the directions and applying a couple coats (rubbing it in with a dry cloth after spraying) the water proofing has remained effective for months now. The scent control seemed to work well throughout the summer as well.

Overall I have had a good experience with the product so far.

Sprayed Sitka pants just from shin down but didn’t seem to repel much. Also sprayed badlands backpack which it helped but I would expect to see water beading up on the fabric which I didn’t but stuff was dry inside so I guess it worked? FYI: you guys should make ALL pants waterproof from the knees down.

Don’t sweat much there but that area always wet from hiking through frosted grass or mud splash. etc. would be an awesome marketing tool to set your pants apart.

Purchased this to treat my Badlands packs. Was able to treat three packs with this bottle. Works as advertised from a water proofing stand point. Scent control effectiveness appears to be working as well.

Had several Axis deer come past my stand, down wind and did not seem to catch any scent from myself or my gear. Good product.
